SallyRamshawandherfourchildrenwere luckytoescapetheirhomeafteritcaughtfire intheearlyhoursofSeptember15.
Shewoketowhatshedescribedasan "unforgettable,syntheticwheatsmell".A damptowelleftinanupstairsroomhad heatedupandcaughtfire.
"Bythetime Idiscoveredwherethesmell andsmokewascomingfromitwastoolate," shesaid.
"Itallhappenedsofast.Wehadabout18 minutestoleaveandweweresoluckywe wereabletogetout."
SallysaidhereldestdaughterLucy,18, was"absolutelyinstrumental"ingetting everyoneoutofthehouseandtakingcontrol withclearthinkinginthechaos -twins Leo andSophie,10,andAlice,14,moving quicklytoescape.
Sallyalerted000andbrigadesfrom acrossthedistrictturnedouttotheInstitute Roadhomeabout2.30am.
Fireguttedthehome'supperstoreywhile thelowerlevelsustainedsignificantsmoke andwaterdamage.
"Nowit'sjustcharupstairs.Therewerea lotoftreasuresthekidslost,"Sallysaid.
Whilethefamilyhadhomeinsurance, theywerenotcoveredforcontents,and therewaslittletheycouldsalvage.
Thefamilyhasbeenstayinginemergency accommodationandnowseek along-term rental.It'snotthefirstblowforthefamilyin recentyears.Theyfacedthepandemiclike everyoneelse,butalsoSally'sownpersonal healthstruggles,andsignificantstormdestructiontotheirpropertyinJunelastyear.
"Thekidshavebeenthrough alotinthe pastcoupleofyearsbutwe'retryingtokeep ourchinsup,"Sallysaid.
"Wehavethemostamazingcommunity. Everyonehasbeensowonderfulandsupportive.We'llbealright.Ithasbroughtour familywellandtrulytogether."

Ramshaws.Withinfourdaystheyhadraised $18,400through112donations.Nowthat figurehasreachedbeyond$20,800.

Thebuildinglocatedat205MainRoad,wasbuiltinthe1850sbuthassatvacantsince 2010,andisin apoorstateofrepair.
In2017thecouncilresolvedtosellthebuilding,however,followingadvocacyeffortsby communitymembers, anew setofcouncillorsdeterminedin2021toundertakeworksto restoretheformerchurch.
Thelong-termprojecttorepairthebuildingwillbeundertakeninstagesandrestoration workwillbedependentonfuturefunding.
Thefirststagewilladdressunderlyingwaterissueswhichhaveimpactedthebuilding structure.
Thecouncil’s2022/2023budgethasallocated$279,000towardsrestorationofthe historicbuilding,andworkswillfirstfocusonrisingdamp,roofplumbinganddrainage improvements.
Thecouncilwillbeadvocatingforfurtherinvestmentintothebuildingtoenablecommunityuseinthefuture.

Landholdersarestillconcernedsimilar eventscouldoccurinthefutureandwant toseeanoverhaultotheRomseyplant.
