GreaterWesternWaterannouncedonWednesday, sustainedheavyrainfallhadledto"asignificantriseinwaterheldinstorageattheRomseyRecycledWaterPlant". ItfollowsColibanWatersewerspillsintheKynetonare earlierthismonth.

GWWwarnedcontrolledreleaseswouldbeginthenext dayandcontinueuntilthestoragereturnedtoitsnormal operatingcapacity.

Farmersfrontingthecreektoldthe Express theshort noticemomentsbefore alongweekendhascausedheadachesinpreparingtheirproperties.

Theysaidthemovealsobrokeanagreementwithlandholderstogiveatleast14daysnoticebeforeanyrecycled waterrelease.

Theagreementcameafter aproposedrecycledwater

releasein2019thatlandholderschallengedandsuccessfullystopped.WhileClass Brecycledwateristhoughtsafe forcattleandotheruses,farmerswereleftuncertainabout risksanddilutionlevels.

MonegeettacattlefarmerJanRavnholtsaidthedisregardforlandholderswas"appalling"andGWWcouldn'tbe trusted.

"Indoingthis,theyhavedeliberatelyignoredwhatthey hadagreedtoinwriting,"hetoldtheExpress

"Howdo Iknowit'ssafe?Theysaytheyaremonitoringthecreekbutthere's alotof datathatwedon'thave accessto.

Theysaiddischargingexcessrecycledwaterfromstoragehelpstoreduceanypotentialforuncontrolledoverflowsandprotectstherecycledwaterplantinfrastructure.

AccreditedAngusbreederGerardBelleville'sWoodlandspropertyisoneofthelargestimpacted,frontingthe creekatthereleaseentrypoint.

LocatedeastoftheRomseytownship,itrunsabout 600headofcattleandsupports aliveexportbreeding program.

Hesaidhewasforcedtorelocatestockatthelast minutewithnoguaranteetheywouldbesafeaccessing thecreek.

TheMacedonRangescommunityhas ralliedtoraisemorethan$20,000for aCarlsruhefamilydevastatedbyhousefire.

SallyRamshawandherfourchildrenwere luckytoescapetheirhomeafteritcaughtfire intheearlyhoursofSeptember15.

Shewoketowhatshedescribedasan "unforgettable,syntheticwheatsmell".A damptowelleftinanupstairsroomhad heatedupandcaughtfire.

"Bythetime Idiscoveredwherethesmell andsmokewascomingfromitwastoolate," shesaid.

"Itallhappenedsofast.Wehadabout18 minutestoleaveandweweresoluckywe wereabletogetout."

SallysaidhereldestdaughterLucy,18, was"absolutelyinstrumental"ingetting everyoneoutofthehouseandtakingcontrol withclearthinkinginthechaos -twins Leo andSophie,10,andAlice,14,moving quicklytoescape.

Sallyalerted000andbrigadesfrom acrossthedistrictturnedouttotheInstitute Roadhomeabout2.30am.

Fireguttedthehome'supperstoreywhile thelowerlevelsustainedsignificantsmoke andwaterdamage.

"Nowit'sjustcharupstairs.Therewerea lotoftreasuresthekidslost,"Sallysaid.

Whilethefamilyhadhomeinsurance, theywerenotcoveredforcontents,and therewaslittletheycouldsalvage.

Thefamilyhasbeenstayinginemergency accommodationandnowseek along-term rental.It'snotthefirstblowforthefamilyin recentyears.Theyfacedthepandemiclike everyoneelse,butalsoSally'sownpersonal healthstruggles,andsignificantstormdestructiontotheirpropertyinJunelastyear.

"Thekidshavebeenthrough alotinthe pastcoupleofyearsbutwe'retryingtokeep ourchinsup,"Sallysaid.

"Wehavethemostamazingcommunity. Everyonehasbeensowonderfulandsupportive.We'llbealright.Ithasbroughtour familywellandtrulytogether."

Communitysupport

Inthedaysfollowingthefire,neighbours ShereeAndersonandGregClinnickwere quicktoestablish aGoFundMepageforthe

Ramshaws.Withinfourdaystheyhadraised $18,400through112donations.Nowthat figurehasreachedbeyond$20,800.

Allfundswillgotowardsfurnishings, clothingandhomegoods -alllosttothe blaze.

"Wereallywantedtohelpthefamilyget back ontheirfeet.Forsomethinglikethisto havehappenedissodevastating.Theyneed allthesupporttheycanget,"Shereetoldthe Express

TheGoFundMepageremainsopenfor contributions.

NewhamMechanicsInstitutealsoused theirscreeningofthegrandfinalonSaturday as afundraiserfortheRamshaws.Thehall hosted60peopleandraisedabout$1500.

"WewantedtodosomethingtomakeSallyandherfamilyfeelsurroundedbypeople lookingoutforthem.Theyareveryvalued communitymembers,"saidKerriRitchie,hall president.

MountAlexanderShireCouncilhasbegunworktorepairandrestoretheformerWesleyanChurchinChewton.

Thebuildinglocatedat205MainRoad,wasbuiltinthe1850sbuthassatvacantsince 2010,andisin apoorstateofrepair.

In2017thecouncilresolvedtosellthebuilding,however,followingadvocacyeffortsby communitymembers, anew setofcouncillorsdeterminedin2021toundertakeworksto restoretheformerchurch.

Thelong-termprojecttorepairthebuildingwillbeundertakeninstagesandrestoration workwillbedependentonfuturefunding.

Thefirststagewilladdressunderlyingwaterissueswhichhaveimpactedthebuilding structure.

Thecouncil’s2022/2023budgethasallocated$279,000towardsrestorationofthe historicbuilding,andworkswillfirstfocusonrisingdamp,roofplumbinganddrainage improvements.

Thecouncilwillbeadvocatingforfurtherinvestmentintothebuildingtoenablecommunityuseinthefuture.

recycledwatertoDeepCreek.

“Weexpectthesereleaseswillcontinue intoOctoberunderthecurrentweather conditions,"shesaid.

“Strictwaterqualitymonitoringprocesseswillremaininplacetoprotectthehealth ofthelocalcommunityandenvironment."

Landholdersarestillconcernedsimilar eventscouldoccurinthefutureandwant toseeanoverhaultotheRomseyplant.

"Theyhavebeenthreateningtomake dischargesintothecreekonandofffora numberofyears,"MrBellevillesaid.

"WhethertheRomseyRecycledWater Plantshouldstillbeoperatingasitiswith thelevelofgrowthinRomseyandplanned futuregrowthis amatterthatneedstobe discussed."

GWWisstartinganengagementprogramacrossMacedonRangesnextmonth tounderstandcommunityviewsand aspirationsforlocalwatermanagement, includingrecycledwater.

Talentedmusicianswith home-grown ResonanceString Orchestra arepreparingtoflaunt their stuffatCastlemaineTown Hallnext month.

The 50pieceall-agescommunity orchestra takesto the town hall stage3pmonSundayOctober16topresent'DeepTime', with orchestra leaderspromising"aprofoundmusicalfeast".

Resonance has become avibrantcommunityinstitution boastingbothCastlemaineandWoodend branchesthat combinetopresentperformancesas afull-bodied50piecestring orchestra.

"It'sgoingtobe agreatconcert,"CastlemaineResonance memberandviolinplayerJan Palethorpehas told the Express ahead of the concert.

Artisticco-director Heather Cumminssaysitwillembody the orchestra's visionof“empoweringregionalcommunitiestomake greatmusic”.

Membersalso hintthattheshow willoffer amusicalexplorationof"microbes,seasons,planets, humanity andbeyond” traversingsomediverseterrain -includingVivaldi'sSpringconcertofeaturingsoloist ThomasinaChallender.

Concert-goerswillbetreatedto the premiereof three original

workscomposedbyResonance'sownartisticco-directorand violistEmmaWade.

Emmasays thethree pieces have allbeeninspiredbyaspectsofLeanganookinDjaaraCountry,including her original pieceentitled IlregnodeiFunghi -"whichmeans the kingdomof funghi," Emmasays.

"This piecestartsundergroundandourartisticpatronZoe Knighton says that bar15soundslike themushrooms we'retold toavoid."

The concertis the secondtimeResonance has played the town hall andwillalsofeature the belovedAdagiofromSpartacusby Khachaturian, plus acompellingarrangementofHolst's 'Mars'from The PlanetsSuite.

The Sundayafternooneventwillalsofeature adebutperformanceby the newlyformedstringquartetsof theorchestra's respectiveWoodendandCastlemainebranches,playingworks byMendelssohn andNardini.

"These quartets havebeen tutored byour artisticpatron,Zoe Knighton from the acclaimedFlindersQuartet," Jansaid.

TheCalderHighway,LancefieldToobooracRoadandTylden-WoodendRoad areroadsearmarkedforworksinthestate's annualmaintenanceblitz.

State-wideblitzworkswillinclude patchingpotholesandreplacingorrepairing roadsigns,andwilltakeplaceoverthenext eightmonths.

Theprogramwillalsoensureother partsoftheroadnetworkareuptoscratch, includingrebuildingbridges,culverts andretainingwalls,andinspectingand maintainingthousandsoftrafficlights,signs andotherstructures.

“Whilewe’rebusyrebuildingthousands ofkilometresofVictorianroads,we’realso busyplanningfutureworks,”Memberfor MacedonMary-AnneThomassaid.

MsThomas afullprogramofworksto rebuildsectionsofKilmore-LancefieldRoad isalsonowunderdevelopment.

Timingfordeliveryofworkswillbe dependentupon anumberoffactors includingweatherandcontractoravailability.

Enforcementofficersare alarmedatthescaleofhabitat destructioningrassywoodlands timber,whichprovidecriticalhollowsforvulnerablenestingbirds andmammals.

ParksVictoria,areachiefranger goldfields,KarenDoyle,saidmany animalsreliedonfallentimberand treehollowsforhabitat.

ParksVictoriahasissuedmore than$5500ininfringementnotices fortheillegalcollectionoftimber,

destructionofhabitat,andoff-road drivingintheseareasoverthepast 12months.Theyareinvestigatingotherpossibleoffenceswith thehelpofVictoriaPoliceandthe ConservationRegulator.

Anyonecaughtillegallyfellingor takingtimbercanface afineofup to$9246and/or ayearinprison,as wellasrisklosingtheitemsusedto commit offences,suchaschainsaws,vehiclesandotherassociatedequipment.
