Atown forecast togrowfrom nearly 5000 people tocloseto8000 people inthe next 10 yearsneeds to keep aclose eye on providing openspaces that ensure social, health and wellbeing, environmental and economicbenefits toall residents.

RiddellsCreek hasanamazing open space resource onits doorstep. Barrm Birrm; a118.6 hectare siteofhigh-quality woodlandsin the Macedon Ranges. However, poorplanningin the1890sputan inappropriatesubdivisiononthebooks, and thiswas nevercorrected. The162allot-

mentswere soldinthe1970s,andthough there was neverpermission tobuild, this bushland area has beenmistreated and misunderstood.

Notonlyhas therebeendegradation oftheland over many years, itisnow a confusing blend ofcouncil-owned landand privatelyowned blocks, withpublic gazetted roads eroding into deeplyrutted dirttracks. Landisstill being boughtandsoldwithout peopleaccepting that they will never be abletobuild.

RiddellsCreek Landcareiscampaigning to protect abushland area importanttoRiddellsCreek, butthathas broader implicationsfor protecting rapidlydiminishing open spaces and biodiversity inVictoria.

Iapplaudthe efforts andvisionofourlocalcouncillor, AnnetteDeath, and Macedon Ranges ShireCounciltomake representationstothestate government forstate acquisitionofBarrmBirrm.

Acquisitionwillinvolve alotoflegalities and money. Inthe meantime, thevalueof landisgoingup –themarketwillwaitforno one. Nowthatthecouncilhas committed to acquisition,we need apublicly stated plan ofactionforacquisition.Thestate governmentneeds to step up.

As RiddellsCreekgrapples withfuture growthand development, thecommunity, owners and prospectivebuyers ofland atBarrmBirrm deserve toknowwhatis planned. Howfantasticwoulditbetohave thisspace properlymanaged, cared forand accessible toall.
