THE VINE GROWING AND WINE PRODUCING SECTOR IN ITALY

The figures that refer to Italian vine growing and wine producing, a sector that enjoys its promotional and commercial showcase at Vinitaly Vine growing. Wine producing companies: 383,645, equivalent to 23.5% of the total number of Italian farms Hectares under cultivation: more than 632,000 The average size of a vine growing and wine producing area under cultivation: 1.6 hectares Employed: 700,000 (1.2 million considered as being the primary linked industries) Grape harvest employment: 210,000 of whom 15% are foreigners. Production 2011: 40.3 million hectolitres (-14% compared to 2010); more than 60% of the production was allocated to the production of 334 denomination of origin wines, 74 guaranteed denomination of origin wines and more than 110 traditional geographic indication wines. Compared to 2010, 2011 had a slowing down in production equivalent to 14%. Because it was considered as being a bad year from the point of view of quality; the wine harvest in Italy only permitted the bottling of just a few more than forty million hectolitres. Exports during the first eleven months of 2011: 23 million hectolitres. Turnover during the first eleven months of 2011: more than Euro four billion, compared to Euro 3.7 billion for the whole year 2010. Wine represented the most important food and agricultural exports. Italian wine confirmed its own leader position in international exports with a worldwide quota of approximately 22%. In fact more than one bottle in five throughout the world “speaks” Italian. The main outlet markets are the German, British, American and Canadian ones but Switzerland and some of the Nordic Countries are also good importers. Amongst the emerging countries, Russia, China and Japan are making good progress. Imports from Italy represent a third of overall importation into the USA, both with reference to quantity as well as value. Internal consumption: -1% Whilst Italian wines are achieving success throughout the world, less wine is drunk at home, with a reduction of 1% compared to a year ago. A phenomenon which has confirmed a trend in course which has seen consumption pro capita down to twelve litres over the past fifteen years, going from fifty-five to forty-three litres. By way of recompense, Italians are seeking better quality, with the sales of denomination of origin wines increasing by 2%.
