AHPO’S VISION OF PARADISE

What suggests paradise? Is it spending quality time with your family, being entertained in luxurious surroundings, or relaxing in guaranteed privacy? On Ahpo, you don’t have to choose. Across the length of her 115 metres, Ahpo delights and surprises with her stylish interior and innovative spaces, while fulfilling the traditionally paradoxical needs of both intimacy and conviviality.

When stepping aboard from one of her two custom limo tenders, exterior and interior designers Nuvolari Lennard had a very simple objective: perfection. With her timeless, elegant bow and graceful superstructure sweeping aft, she fulfils the brief. “For Lürssen, the task was to build a motor yacht for a repeat client, an upgrade from his 86-metre Lürssen, who had many years of owning and chartering different types of yachts behind him,” says Peter Lürssen. “He required top-notch design and engineering as well as seagoing comfort for his family, guests and crew. The launch of Ahpo is testament to the excellent team of builders, designers and engineers we have

at Lürssen and the strong relationship with the client. Lürssen prides itself on meeting challenges and this one was no different!” Moran Yacht & Ship supervised the build on behalf of the owner with whom they have a longstanding relationship.

The early brief for the interior was to link all the elements of nature, harmoniously balanced throughout the yacht with a clear drive towards rich over opulent. The 205-metre square wellness area on the lower deck is a fitting first place that many that will step aboard into. A large bamboo grove encased in backlit frosted glass forms a stunning backdrop to a stylish bar on one

side and a luxurious massage room on the other. In contrast to this zen atmosphere is an explosion of coloured mosaic tiles which make up the hammam and day head as well as the Jacuzzi and plunge pool. Further forward is a luxurious 12-seater cinema and just down the hall is one of the yacht’s most pleasantly surprising areas: a glass walkway through the engine room. This futuristic addition allows the owners and

guests to view the impressive engines and mechanical spaces from above whenever they like.

On the main deck a large conference room boasts as its centrepiece a beautiful custom table with an antique map of Jamaica engraved in bronze and surrounded by deep blue resin, sitting underneath an eyecatching crystal chandelier. Sliding doors open to reveal the main salon, an elegant,

formal space with a self-playing Steinway piano. Further forward, another set of doors open up into the formal dining room. Having these three distinct yet connected areas together on the same deck means that as well as somewhere to relax and unwind, Ahpo is also a functional working environment and crucially one where business and pleasure can co-exist without crossing paths.

Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY 13 YACHTS & YACHTING

The centre of the yacht is dominated by a grand staircase, accessible at all guest levels. The staircase itself represents a path and depicts an olive tree that grows up to the sky, surrounded by cranes. A striking crystal sculpture hangs from the ceiling, composed of falling feathers, each built by hand. The accent marbles change on each deck, acting as a subtle map of Blu Onyx, Green J’adore and Grey Lilac, with the floor always Calacatta Borghini with White Onyx for the petals, complemented by a bronze balustrade.

The owner’s deck takes on a different theme to the formality of the deck below. The informal salon is contemporary and convivial, with a colourful interpretation of the universe in the carpet and a striking latticed wood pattern running throughout. On the aft deck, an enormous custom 16-seater dining table stands proud within a winter garden that can be completely open or closed to the elements thanks to a complex set of sliding and folding glass doors.

On the upper deck is the 8-metre-long swimming pool, which also boasts a counter-current system. There is a self-contained Jacuzzi on one side of the pool, with large sun pad seating flanking the other side. A large bar and relaxed low-level seating make this area a clear favourite for informal family days. Also on this deck is the large gym with multiple machines and pieces of equipment and stunning views out over the water on both sides.

On the bridge deck, the aft deck has been left unencumbered, making it a completely flexible area. Open to the sun, it can also be protected by removable fabric shades. Moveable furniture and sun loungers fill the space or it can be left open as both a sunrise yoga platform and midnight dance floor, making Ahpo a one stop shop for the perfect day in paradise. Forward on this deck is the bridge: unusual to have this high up, it provides the crew with unparalleled views for manoeuvring the 115-metre-long, 18-metre-wide yacht. Designed more like a guest space than a traditional crew area with premium woods and leathers, it is smart and high tech. The unique location also means the ship’s office and captain’s cabin can be together and away from the guest areas, and enables perhaps Ahpo’s most standout, innovative feature: the duplex owner’s apartment on the decks below.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

The owner’s apartment is made up of a large 245 m2 master cabin on the owner’s deck and a 95 m2 panoramic salon on the upper deck, joined together by a private interior staircase. The owner’s cabin is spacious yet cosy, providing ample privacy from the outside world. The deck space for this room is similarly private: a semi-circle sofa and coffee table face out to sea on recessed balconies on each side, cocooned into a quiet corner thanks to glass bulwarks.

On the inside, his-and-hers bathrooms and dressing rooms boast ornate mosaic patterns and bold marbles. His bathroom and dressing room is a combination of honey onyx and black Portoro marble with a stunning mosaic wall in the shower inspired by Klimt paintings. In her bathroom and dressing room, the main colour is pink with a cherry tree theme with elegant blossoms and birds. In both bathrooms, there are two impressive freestanding tubs and custom crystal chandeliers, and a focus on Venetian glass from Murano including furniture decorated with a cast glass frame.

The panoramic salon enjoys 180-degree views over the bow. Two custom desks flank each end of the room, turning the space into a private office if so desired, away from the master cabin. “The owners are extremely happy with this solution, it suits their lifestyle very well,” says Carlo Nuvolari. “It was an unusual design idea to have a duplex space but they are very happy with the outcome.” The salon has access to the foredeck and helicopter pad, which is positioned halfway between the owner’s and upper decks. There is a forward dining and lounging area that is inset and raised slightly above the bow, ensuring better views and protection than tradition layouts, and meaning any guests arriving by helicopter do not see through into the master cabin.

15 YACHTS & YACHTING Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY

Aside from the master cabin there are seven guest cabins on board, with two on the owner’s deck, four on the main deck and one on the lower deck. The two cabins on the owner’s deck are designated for specific family members and enjoy their own colour themes of pink and green, chosen by the family to distinguish the two. Gingko leaves make up the main inspiration behind the design in these two cabins with both enjoying the same roll top style baths as in the master cabin bathrooms. The large cabins on the main deck are similarly appointed and enjoy the view from the iconic semi-circle windows.

The crew areas on board are spacious and well-designed, a key request from the owner. There are 37 crew on board Ahpo and the crew spaces have been designed to give maximum privacy, including a large crew mess, a separate crew lounge and a private crew gym. There is also a hospital room down in the tank deck. In the engine room, twin MTU 20V 4000 M73 engines propel the yacht to speeds of 18 knots and for up to 7,000 nautical miles at 12 knots. Efficiency and the desire to be as green as possible was a big drive behind the engineering on board, and the yacht is equipped with a state-ofthe-art exhaust after-treatment system that reduces nitrogen oxide levels and generates less noise and vibration. Similarly, every diesel generating set is equipped with an additional heat exchanger, which is used to heat up an extra heat cycle connecting the pool, Jacuzzi and service water systems. This helps to reduce any thermal energy loss by repurposing it and reduces the need for electric heating systems elsewhere on board.

Paradise is subjective, but when there is so much thought and design put into each space that means everyone is able to enjoy themselves on board in their preferred way, then it is hard to argue that paradise hasn’t been found on a yacht such as Ahpo.

HEESEN’S MY LUSINE

Lusine features a touch-and-go helipad for private use on the sundeck aft, to allow for an Airbus H-135 to land and take off. The forward part of her sundeck is enclosed and comprises a guest reception, as well as a staff cabin.

INTERIOR DESIGN

She is Heesen’s largest ever steel Fast Displacement motor yacht; at 60-metres with an enclosed volume of 1,079 GT, Lusine reaches a maximum speed of 17,5 knots. Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design were appointed for her interior and Omega Architects were contracted for the exterior design.

Arthur Brouwer, Heesen’s CEO said: “Lusine is the perfect example of what a knowledgeable client can achieve in terms of creating a custom Heesen yacht. This 60-metre yacht embodies our savoir-faire at its best: sturdy, elegant, and extremely efficient. Lusine boasts the most complicated interior design we have ever created. We are one of the few shipyards in the world with the in-house know-how and capacity to build yachts of this caliber. With a workforce of 1,000 people, our team comprises engineers, craftspeople, and experts in every sector of shipbuilding. We are a truly unique player in the yachting industry.”

EXTERIOR DESIGN

MY Lusine features a muscular-styled exterior, with sharp edges such as the multifaceted and eye-catching ‘bird wing’ shape that integrates the three decks.

Penned by Frank Laupman of Omega Architects, MY Lusine’s powerful exterior lines stay in true form of Omega’s sleek signature. For instance, the yacht features uninterrupted black thermo-bonded dark glass windows that create long continuous horizontal lines to give the impression of an elongated body. This vast amount of glass also ensures close and unobstructed views of the surrounding seascape.

Sinot Yacht Architecture and Design created an interior oasis that combines the calmness of the ocean with the infinity of the skies. She exudes pure sophistication in the intricacy of design and the unique combination of materials. Lusine is one of the most complex interiors ever crafted by Heesen Yachts Interiors with the use of rare woods, precious fabrics and exquisite leathers. The artisans featured a high level of design detailing when putting it together which is further observed in the elegantly lined furnishings.

The yacht is adorned with poetic and meticulously crafted sculptural artworks by award-winning artists to enrich its interior with a sense of distinction and sumptuous serenity.

Frisso Visser, Heesen CCO said about Lusine: “It is a true testament to the

knowledge and craftmanship of the engineers, designers and team that Heesen is able to create such unique yachts for its clients. Lusine is the perfect example of this with the clients passion for watersports available to see throughout the yacht via unique integrations that allow easy access to the sea. Everything was thought of to ensure that each of the customer’s individual requests fit into the unique envelope that determines a yacht’s maximum length, draught and height. Lusine truly showcases the work that Heesen can do to create a Full Custom yacht that embodies the distinctive personality and lifestyle of its owner. Few other yards are able to offer such a bespoke offering without having to comprise on quality and delivery time.”

Sinot and Omega worked closely together to create a holistic result, where interior and exterior complement each other and the fluid indoor/outdoor connection remains uninterrupted.

LIFESTYLE

Lusine’s layout was designed for an owner who loves to travel the seas in comfort and style.

Twelve guests are accommodated in six staterooms, with the owners’ apartment on the bridge deck aft. The owner’s explicit request for ultimate privacy was guaranteed by staircases that provide closing hatches, so they can retreat to a truly secluded area, available on both the sun deck and the aft owner’s deck.

Top-notch service is at the core of the layout: separate routing throughout the yacht ensures that the crew can perform their duties seamlessly without disturbing the guests’ relaxation.

As part of Heesen’s fast-growing fleet, Lusine raises the bar for quality, detail and complex construction. This 60-metre yacht demonstrates Heesen’s position as leaders in yacht building; with 12 yachts currently under construction and deliveries scheduled throughout 2025.

A GENUINE YACHTING EXPERIENCE

ECO-FRIENDLY CONCEPT EMPHASIZES ACCOMMODATION AND ADVENTURE

SHADOWCAT, the leading developer of catamaran support yachts, announces that it has expanded its portfolio to include a fully bespoke monohull shadow vessel. The new concept, SHADOWOLF, is SHADOWCAT’s first single-hulled support yacht and is available to meet the increasing demand for guest-level comfort and services. The vessel’s new hybrid hull design focuses on passenger comfort and accommodation, while still enhancing adventures at sea. SHADOWOLF perfectly supports a superyacht and is ideal for expanding options on multi-day excursions, voyages into more remote locations, and/or for chartering or research purposes.

Designed by SHADOWCAT partners Incat Crowther and YCTS, Ltd., the 69.2m SHADOWOLF offers an 11.5m beam and 3.25m draft, and will be built upon Incat Crowther’s award-winning aluminum hull design, enabling some of the highest speeds and superior efficiency of any support yacht available on the market.

Other SHADOWOLF features include a fully certified helipad and hangar, with accommodation and storage over three decks. The support vessel has an impressive carrying capacity, including space for a submarine, three 11m tenders, two 8m tenders, six jet-skis, two 4WDs and two quad bikes. In addition to a 14 crew-member and nine service-personnel capacity, it has as accommodation for eight guests or as extra resting space for crew from the main yacht. The total complement is 31.

“SHADOWOLF stands out in large part due to its hull being designed specifically for yacht-level comfort whilst offering exceptional efficiency. It also allows owners to commission a fully bespoke support yacht within a very competitive price range and delivery window,” said Incat Crowther’s Dan Mace, technical manager. “Incat Crowther is well-known for producing award-winning vessels on both catamaran and monohull platforms, and we look forward to this ‘industry-first’ concept coming to life.”

“The addition of a monohull concept to our portfolio is a natural next step for SHADOWCAT, and firmly establishes us as the No. 1 support yacht developer in the industry. This latest innovative concept delivers extreme comfort at sea, without the need to compromise on performance, speed or customization options,” said Robert Smith, SHADOWCAT founder and YCTS director. “Because developing shadow yachts is our sole focus, we can deliver a higher level of expertise and vessel customization across multiple platforms, ensuring our clients’ operational needs are surpassed.”

The vessel is powered by three MTU 16V4000 M73L IMO3 diesel engines and can reach a top speed of 21 knots. In a unique design for modern support vessels, this model will meet or exceed IMO Tier III emissions guidelines and has innovative green technology to reduce its impact on the environment by providing a zero-discharge operational capability. An onboard treatment plant cleans all wastewater discharged to a drinkable quality, wet and dry waste is also fully treated onboard to allow the vessel to operate with a zero-discharge policy, to meet a “leave no trace” philosophy. High levels of onboard comfort are aided by a pair of Naiad Dynamics AtRest stabilizers.

CUSTOM LINE 140’: BORN GREAT.

The new Custom Line flagship marries timeless elegance with Italian design and leading-edge technology.

Custom Line inspires lovers of cruising in superior comfort to dream big by presenting the Custom Line 140’ superyacht, with a length overall of 42.61 meters and a maximum beam of 8.54 meters. The new flagship is a work of naval art that brings together innovative engineering and refined Italian savoir faire to conjure up endless emotions. The standout new product in the 2022-2023 yachting season, Custom Line 140’ made her world debut at the Ferretti Group Private Preview before being exhibited at the Cannes Yachting Festival and the Monaco Yacht Show.

Created in collaboration with Ferretti Group’s Product Strategy Committee and Engineering Department, Custom Line 140’ is the third Custom Line yacht with exterior styling and interior decoration by Francesco Paszkowski Design, working in partnership with Margherita Casprini and the Custom Line Atelier on the interiors.

Custom Line 140’, with her sleek, powerful contours and contemporary style, has the distinctly sporty character that is a defining feature of the brand’s planing line, set off by unparalleled elegance and refinement: taught lines sweep from bow to stern in an exciting alternation of materials and colours represented by dark plate glass and light-coloured structural surfaces.

Another stylish detail is the painted aluminium handrail with Y-shaped uprights, an elegant and functional design feature. The hull windows are generously sized, while the floor-to-ceiling glazing on deck offers direct contact with the water.

The brand’s new flagship presents spaces never seen before, with interiors extending across over 300 m², more than 200 m² of outdoor areas and an arrangement that reflects the yacht’s superior size. The layout is spread over four decks, with the settings designed for socializing flowing seamlessly across both exterior and interior spaces. On each deck, the areas devoted to the owner and guests are kept completely separate from those used by the crew thanks to the naval architecture developed specifically for this superyacht, featuring external walkways and interior staircases that connect the lower deck with the sun deck and are designed exclusively for use by the crew.

Despite her majestic size, Custom Line 140’ has a gross tonnage of 398 GT. The skillful use of composite material and carbon fiber for the hull, the superstructure and the hard top on the sun deck keeps both the weight and draft low, ideal for navigating in shallow waters like the Caribbean

Sea. All this adds incalculable value to the yacht’s design and underscores the beauty and liveability of interiors offering ceilings over 2 meters high on each deck and an unparalleled level of comfort.

Every single feature of the Custom Line 140’ is the result of meticulous research and attention to detail. The star of the show is natural light, which floods into every setting on the yacht through expansive floor-toceiling glazed surfaces.

The interiors are defined by neutral, natural tones and richly textured materials that gratify the senses on both a tactile and visual level. The result is perfect harmony between furnishings, finishings and design solutions across the entire yacht, ensuring total freedom and absolute privacy on board for both owner and guests.

A LEGEND RETURNS EASTBAY 60 RETURNS TO ROOTS

the transition of the line adopting V-Warp technology, and now with the Eastbay 60 on the new platform the transition is complete. The three tenets of V-Warp technology are: 1. Hull platform 2. Exotic materials 3. The build philosophy

V-WARP HULL DELIVERS NEXT-LEVEL PERFORMANCE

It’s not surprising that the brand that pioneered the production Down East market with the introduction of the Eastbay 38 at the 1993 Miami International Boat Show, is putting the market on notice once again.

The new Eastbay 60 is built by the GB Marine Group, the company behind legendary Grand Banks Yachts, and brings together the heritage, craftsmanship, and superior quality with the company’s patented, performance V-Warp hull technology.

A DEEP LEGACY

First a little brand history: The 38 was designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates in conjunction with Grand Banks Yachts and was followed by the Eastbay 40 and then the 43 to offer a larger cockpit. In 1997, the company experienced an internal sales record when it took orders for 27 Eastbay 49 HXs at its Miami International Boat Show debut over Valentine’s Weekend. The high-speed momentum continued with subsequent models including a 39, 45, 46, 47, 50, 54, and 58, creating one of the company’s most successful brands in its history.

EXCITING FUTURE

When pioneering boatbuilder and recordsmashing world-class sailor Mark Richards took charge of the GB Marine Group as CEO in 2014, he and his team immediately went to work on developing the Eastbay 44 which became an instant classic. The boat also benefited from the incorporation of Richards’ preferred construction philosophy of lighter, stronger, and better, while retaining the traditional Hunt hull shape. The layout maximized the interior space and offered main-deck galley and galleydown layouts, and 2- and 3-stateroom plans.

As customer demand was leading Richards to consider the largest Eastbay to date, it was decided that, in order to propel the Eastbay line to the next level as required by this size range, it would be required to fully incorporate the company’s advanced V-Warp® technology into the Eastbay line and transition the upcoming flagship to the new hull platform. The Eastbay 44 began

“We spent a lot of hours discussing what would it take to create the most advanced, most luxurious, Eastbay available,” said Richards. “Looking back, employing our hull platform, which focuses on efficiency, maximum comfort, and a soft ride now seems like a no-brainer.”

The V-Warp Hull is designed to stay in the water, maximizing waterline length and slicing through the waves. This is in contrast with a typical deep-V, which requires a lot of energy to push a boat out of the water and onto plane. For a demonstration of this effect, look behind typical boats running at cruising speed and take note of their wakes—they’re often quite large.

To further enhance the performance, Richards’ build philosophy focuses on maximizing strength and minimizing weight during the build process. Key factors carried over from his sailboat-racing pedigree. Carbon fiber is used extensively on the 60, including a fully infused carbon fiber deck and deck house to ensure the center of gravity is positioned as low as possible in the boat, where it belongs. The luxury cruise sector has seen a significant amount of change in the past two years and this looks set to continue as we move into 2023. We spoke to James Cole,

at

Cruises to discuss the latest trends and future innovations within the sector.

SPECIALISTS IN LUXURY

“Since the global pandemic, we have seen much more interest in luxury cruises on much smaller vessels and we expect this trend to continue into 2023. I think there have been a number of drivers for this. Firstly, due to the pandemic, some people have become much more crowd conscious and this has prompted a move away from mass-market style holidays. The much lower passenger numbers associated with luxury and ultra-luxury cruises have clearly inspired people to try an ultra-luxury cruise for the first time. Once you’ve experienced an ultra-luxury cruise, it is hard to go back. The differences are stark in terms of personal space, levels of service and the standard of cuisine. There are many other associated benefits of course. Due to their size, luxury vessels are able to visit much smaller ports and in more picturesque locations. Scenic cruising is also another aspect which is often overlooked as well. Because large ships have to stick to dedicated sea lanes due to their increased draught, smaller vessels are free to roam much closer to the shore and can stop off at small islands with much greater flexibility.

Founder Managing Director Panache

“For example, Scenic Eclipse is a luxury expedition yacht that has a Class 1A Super rating, thereby enabling it to navigate through Arctic and Antarctic waters in the warmer months of the year. It also has the Polar Class 6 rating, the highest passenger ship ice-class rating, to navigate in challenging seas safely. Accommodating up to 200 passengers, the ship has two private helicopters, a submarine / submersible and fleets of both Sea Kayaks and Zodiac inflatable boats to transport people to some truly spectacular locations. The world’s first expedition yacht, Scenic Eclipse also has an ‘open bridge’ policy and guests can visit the bridge anytime they like to witness the ship being operated in person. Expedition cruises offer truly unique experiences and it is no surprise that this is a significant growth area within the sector. Designed for people to explore off-the-beaten track destinations, expedition cruises allow people to build truly unique memories.”

James continued: “Interest in super-yacht style cruising has increased markedly too. At Panache Cruises we refer to this as ‘yacht-style crusing’ and we feature a number of highly exclusive vessels which typically accommodate around 100 passengers. Emerald’s new super-yacht inspired “Emerald Sakara” is a perfect example of the shift in focus to ultra-luxury vessels. Due to enter service in the spring of 2023, Emerald Sakara will set new standards in luxury and will contain all the ‘toys’ you would expect to find on the most extravagant private super-yachts. From

underwater scooters, stand-up paddle boards, jet skis and sea kayaks, modern yacht style cruises offer all the benefits of a private super-yacht charter at a fraction of the cost. Increasingly many of these vessels are also built to withstand the harsh conditions found in the Arctic and Antarctic and the hulls are specifically built to operate in areas where ice is a constant hazard. Very few private super-yachts are built for ice operations so this is a significant development.”

BEING BOVET 200 YEARS OF THE HUMAN TOUCH IN LUXURY WATCHMAKING

In a world where more and more products are made on an assembly line, BOVET breaks the mold by applying the human touch to its high watchmaking masterpieces, throughout every step of the process.

Founded 200 years ago this year, in 1822, BOVET has a long history of creating beautiful pieces of watchmaking art, as well as a heritage of innovation that continues today.

It doesn’t get much more picturesque or storybook perfect than the setting of the House of BOVET’s headquarters -- an actual 14th-century castle in the legendary Valde-Travers, Switzerland, the cradle of high watchmaking.

But, wait, it gets better.

The Chateau de Môtiers was once actually owned by the Bovet family, the founders

of the House. Fleurier, the village visible from the ramparts of the castle, is where the Bovet dynasty was born.

In 2001, Mr. Pascal Raffy, a watch collector, was approached to take over the house. He agreed on one condition, to put BOVET back in its rightful position atop the watch industry. He then added in-house manufacturing capabilities, as well as the castle, cementing the legacy and the future of BOVET.

NO ASSEMBLY LINES

With its in-house manufacture located in Tramelan, Switzerland, BOVET adds the human touch to every production step. Starting from the production of the parts for each timepiece, an expert artisan evaluates and controls every aspect of the production process. And, in order to heighten the precision and beauty of the mechanics, every piece and part that goes into a BOVET timepiece is hand-finished – hardened, burnished, polished, angled, engraved, and more. This lengthens the production process, but the end result is a timepiece that is spectacularly finished, adding to its precision and beauty.

BOVET even makes its own spirals and regulating organs, something only a handful of companies in the worldwide watch industry can say. Then, each and every timepiece is assembled and regulated by a single watchmaker. This way, BOVET can guarantee the quality and precision, resulting in incredible attention to detail.

In addition, BOVET 1822 is committed to keeping the traditional decorative arts alive, with artisans in its own in-house workshops.

THE COLLECTIONS

BOVET is one of the rare companies that offers a wide range of timepieces, from the simple to the ultra-complicated, and everything in between. Its signature case is the Fleurier, with the distinctive “Bovet Bow” at 12 o’clock, and it also has the Dimier case, with the traditional crown at three o’clock.

For men, the entry point is the 19Thirty collection, a 42mm timepiece that features a high watchmaking mechanical winding movement and an astonishing seven days of power reserve. In addition, the 19Thirty is finished to an incredible standard, on par with that of BOVET’s high complications, every piece and part meticulously polished and angled.

The Miss Audrey is where the ladies’ collection starts, its 36mm case incorporating the patented Amadeo system, making it possible to transform the wristwatch into a table clock and a pendant watch, all without any tools.

From there, the collection climbs the horological ladder, including moon phases, jumping hours, perpetual calendars, triple-time zones and world-timers, and tourbillons and flying tourbillons – all developed, manufactured, finished, and regulated in-house.

In recent years, BOVET has specialized in unique combinations of complications, like the Virtuoso VIII Chapter Two which combines a flying tourbillon with a big date and 10 days of power reserve; the Récital 26 Brainstorm® Chapter Two (flying tourbillon, precision moon phase, unique world time display – this timepiece won the GPHG award for “Mechanical Exception”) and the Récital 22 Grand Récital, combining a double-face flying tourbillon with a hemispherical moon phase, a 24-hour display around a hand-painted earth, a fabulous 9-days of power reserve with a single barrel, and a retrograde perpetual calendar on the back (which won the GPHG award for “Timepiece of the Year”).

These configurations have never been seen before in high watchmaking, and people now expect this innovation and unique design from the House.

A healthy portion of BOVET’s business is bespoke, as today’s luxury is really about having something that no one else has. BOVET’s production is already quite limited, to less than 1,000 pieces a year, but the House is always willing to work with clients to create the timepieces of their dreams, whether that means adding engraved initials or a message all the way up to a complete one-off movement, case, and decorations, like the Rolls-Royce Boat Tail pieces, and everything in between.

A jewel of the watchmaking industry, BOVET 1822 is the best kept secret and a brand worth discovering.

THE EXCALIBUR LIU WEI MONOTOURBILLON A MASTERPIECE BURSTING WITH LIGHT AND URBAN LIFE

Searching for inspiration in the most unexpected places is in Roger Dubuis’ DNA. This includes uniting with world-famous urban culture artists who share its values to break the rules, showcase radical expertise, and obsess daily over the design of the future. Continuing on a journey to create boundary-breaking masterpieces, Roger

Dubuis is proud to introduce the fourth timepiece from its Urban Culture Tribe with the Excalibur Liu Wei Monotourbillon (MT).

Intrigued by his unclassifiable style, Roger Dubuis granted sculptor, drawer, and painter Liu Wei access to its most important room: the Manufacture itself. This is where

the multi-talented artist reinterpreted the astral signature of the iconic Excalibur MT. Immersing himself in the challenge, Liu Wei imagines a masterpiece of striking colours and architectural lines, a creative representation of the lively and intricate urban world.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

INSPIRED BY URBAN EVOLUTION

Never one to shy away from a challenge, Roger Dubuis made the decision to recraft and reshape its own work of art – the Excalibur MT – last year. Now, it features modern clean-cut lines on both case and movement, while the signature star levitates freely above the barrel. Reinterpreted for the modern world, its evolution raised the timepiece to an even higher standard, while providing an exciting and versatile canvas for Liu Wei to express himself.

Born in China where he lives and works, Liu Wei does it all, from witty cultural critiques to evocative installation pieces. Like Roger Dubuis, his radical expertise and creativity have earned him success, while his rule-breaking masterpieces have been shown at the most renowned museums and exhibitions around the globe. Belonging to a generation that grew up in a period of accelerating urbanisation, this rapid evolution inspires much of his art, including his famous “Purple Air” series. As obsessive about creating the future as Roger Dubuis, his art reflects on the world’s dynamism, its changing urban landscape, and its digital transformation. Through a complex composition of colourful lines,

the artist creates an expressive work that represents a blurred, bustling, and digitised environment. This vision is reproduced by Roger Dubuis’ watchmakers, transforming the original Excalibur MT into a sophisticated masterpiece of clashing colour, pulsing with the light and life of the modern urban world.

Reflecting on the challenge, the artist declared: “I never stick to one method in my art, and I respect other artists who do the same, whether they’re watchmakers or writers. Art is about seeing the world anew and experimenting with different ways of creating that world.”

UNRIVALLED CRAFTSMANSHIP

Roger Dubuis’ watchmakers imagined an ingenious three-layer solution to bring Liu Wei’s vision to life. Creating a stunning effect, the first layer of décor features a transparent sapphire glass engraved with vertical lines on both the front and back. Hand-filled with extreme precision, the watchmakers coloured each groove individually in a meticulous process that required every line dried completely before the next one was painted.

A task of extraordinary patience, some grooves are filled with regular lacquer while UV paint is used for others. This carefully defined balance of painted and glowing lines creates a sophisticated architectural depth under UV light, while demonstrating our mastery of luminescence. The selection of shades and their varying effects reflect the artist’s vision of the world’s vibrancy and the energy produced by its everchanging landscape.

The second layer houses Roger Dubuis’ astral signature. Always willing to break rules, its thickness is reduced to work within Liu Wei’s concept. while its grey structure features distinctive black lines for a disruptive contrast to the intricate composition created by the colourful stripes. This directly mirrors elements used by the artist to disrupt the systematic patterns of his own work.

The third and final layer features a sapphire glass case-back laser-engraved to create horizontal grooves. Hand-filled with UV paint, this overlap of lines creates an eyecatching contrast with the vertical stripes of the first layer. An exclusive and labourintensive task, the result is a true example of contemporary art.

The finishing touches of expressive craftsmanship are found on the flange. Opting not to apply minute markers on the dark grey surface, the Maison chose to enhance the hour markers by filling them with black SuperLuminova* for a vivid glow in the dark effect, also visible under UV light.

Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY 39 WATCHES & TIMEPIECES

The considered details extend further to the Roger Dubuis and Swiss Made logos, which are, for the first time, filled with powdered SuperLuminova*. This striking technique creates three looks for this element of the timepiece: silver by day, green by night, and blue under UV light.

THE ART OF HYPERPERFORMANCE

One of the greatest expressions of the watchmakers’ art and technical talent is the RD512SQ calibre itself. By reducing the tourbillon weight with titanium and cobalt chrome, the power reserve is radically optimised to 72 hours, providing the option of leaving the watch unworn over weekends. Proving no detail goes unconsidered, non-magnetic material is used inside the tourbillon to better serve the wearer and improve their experience.

Hand-finished with meticulous care, the timepiece is sealed with fine watchmaking’s most demanding signature. The Poinçon de Genève is the ultimate standard in excellence and expertise, and Roger Dubuis’ visionary approach is found within its uniquely unexpected and antinomic decorations, such as its circular-brushed top surfaces and polished angles.

Underscored by rarity and limited to just eight pieces, the Excalibur Liu Wei MT is housed in a 42 mm titanium grade 5 case and mounted on a black calf leather strap, interchangeable with a Quick Release System for ultimate comfort and flexibility.

Together with its friends, the Maison shows what happens when rules are rejected and creativity is unleashed. In bringing a multitalented artist together with incredible watchmakers, Roger Dubuis proves once again it is unquestionably the most exciting way to experience Hyper Horology™.

THE POWER OF FASHION

I love beautiful things. They have always brought me joy. As a former student of fashion and an artist, my personal environment – from the items I choose for my home to what I wear – is important to me.

I’ve always been a believer in the power of fashion. What you wear can boost your confidence, become your armour, or help to define who you are. It can make you feel happy. Gorgeous lingerie has long been my secret weapon – a hidden confidence booster that sets me up for the day.

Like many people, cancer has had a tremendous and devastating impact on my life. I lost my sister Rose to breast cancer and watched my sister Mary endure it. Then I went through it myself, twice. I’ve had numerous surgeries on my breasts to save my life, including a double mastectomy with reconstruction. I learned that recovery from surgery is not simply about the

physical scars, but an emotional and phycological journey.

As I came to terms with my changed body, I was desperate to find luxurious underwear that met my unique post-surgery needs. I

was shocked at the lack of choice on the post-surgery market. I fled many fitting rooms in tears, unable to find anything suitable that actually made me feel good about myself. Then a realised that as a designer, I had the skills and knowledge to

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023
Why I launched my luxury lingerie brand to give women their confidence back following surgery for breast cancer. Caroline Kennedy Alexander, founder of LoveRose Lingerie
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

do something about this. I did some research and realised many other women had long felt the same way as I did, and so LoveRose was born, named after my sister Rose.

People who have undergone treatment for breast cancer have unique and varied needs. Sensitive scar tissue can be aggravated by underwires and rough or unbreathable fabrics. Women who require prostheses require pockets to hold these in place.

Currently the post-surgery market is flooded with matronly beige or black items that look like they belong in a medical textbook. Do they provide the physical support required? Yes. Has any thought been given to how a woman might like to feel in them, or that we deserve to have a wider choice about the clothes that we wear? No.

At LoveRose, we have taken a completely different approach to post-surgery design. We worked with many women throughout our design process to understand their needs and desires, we held focus groups to find out what they were missing from the market and what they wish to see. Then we designed a range that we believe does not look out of place beside luxury mainstream brands while retaining the functional elements you need following surgery.

We also worked closely with Professor Carolyn Mair, author of The Psychology of Fashion. She confirmed the importance of having clothing that makes you feel empowered, included and cared for. This cognitive reinforcement genuinely helps you to feel better. This is not about being vain – it’s key to your recovery. This is what many people without experience of breast cancer have not understood until recently. But any woman who has gone through this trauma knows this to be true.

At LoveRose both quality and sustainability are very important to us. We use the softest available recycled lace, and luxurious silk fabrics. Our matching sets are made to last, and include cheerful pops of colour that are sure to put a smile on your face. Our range looks so fantastic and is so comfortable it is even popular with ladies who have not had surgery! We are also working on an Essentials collection due out later this year, which we are really excited about.

It’s all about choice. Most people in the post-surgery community feel forgotten and not considered. As a woman, it’s important to feel included. My goal is to make sure no woman has to experience the same lack of thought or choice when choosing their post-surgery lingerie that I did.

The fashion industry in general must evolve to become more inclusive. Quality postsurgery lingerie must be visible, accessible, and celebrated. There is huge demandbreast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, with 1 in 7 women diagnosed in their lifetime. More than 150 people are diagnosed every day. When you consider the fact that survival rates have doubled in the last four decades, it is clear that the number of women needing these options will continue to increase.

I’m immensely proud of what we have achieved since we launched in 2020. This was not an easy path to take, but it is an incredibly rewarding one. When I speak to women about how our lingerie makes them feel and hear that we’ve helped someone to feel better about themselves, it really does make everything worthwhile.

Master of craft and sophistication, Piaget is a lifestyle, an attitude that combines over a century-long expertise with an ever-renewed sense of joyfulness, conviviality, and extravaganza.

THIS IS PIAGET

Watchmaker of audacity, jeweller of times, Piaget captures the subtle art of positive tensions: from its birthplace in Switzerland (in the mountain village of La Côte-auxFées) to its soulmate region of Côte d’Azur, the Maison displays extravagance and elegance, technicity and beauty, a love of singularity and a strong sense of community. Modern by tradition, avantgarde by conviction!

At Piaget, we believe that mastery liberates creativity: it is our philosophy as a remarkable watchmaker-jeweller.

It is with this in mind that we created this new brand campaign. Bringing back our Maison’s iconic relevance and recreating our myth for today, the campaign is an invitation to live an inspiring life, reminding the newcomers of the Piaget society of our rich and flamboyant ingenuity.

To represent these core values, we created a powerhouse look, an instantly recognizable and ownable style, carried out by a carefully chosen cast to authentically embody our brand: modern, multi-faceted, diverse and inclusive. With their modern beauties, radiating personalities and contagious joie de vivre, models Georgia Palmer and Signe Veiteberg are among the new faces of Piaget.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

Their boldness and singularity are sublimated by the eye of iconic photographer Mikael Jansson, a master of light who has collaborated with the world’s most visionary brands. His talent shines through in the liveliness and audaciousness his images convey. With the help of image maker Benjamin Bruno, Jansson crafted beaming, fun images, in which people and products alike radiate with energy.

Using the Maison’s signature delicate, modern blue for the launch, the campaign will later reveal golden hues images. Playing with perspectives and scales, the images are a celebration of togetherness and shared joy. A unique dynamic, a joyful dialectic, where the singularity of each individual nourishes the vitality of the group.

In the same spirit, the iconic Possession jewellery line, the ultra-thin Altiplano watch, the classic Piaget Polo watch and the strong statement of the Palace Décor are all featured in a campaign that puts emblematic, strong and unforgettable creations at the forefront.

Creating a new visual identity that tells stories about style and products as well as heritage (in the wake of our 150th anniversary), this brand campaign will allow Piaget to reach out to new audiences wherever they might be. A guarantee that the ever-growing Piaget Society will remain an inspiration for the culture and those who make and enjoy it.

“Digging into the past to create the future”, as Piaget’s CEO Benjamin Comar puts it, this brand campaign sheds a new light on Piaget’s iconic history, rooted in the flamboyance of the 70s and 80s, to state what comes next. “The campaign mixes the sense of elegance inherited from the Maison’s origins in La Côte-aux-Fées with the extravaganza of the 1970s, when Piaget came to master the craft of gold work and made colorful stones part of its DNA, Comar adds.

53 JEWELLERY

The creations displayed each symbolize the mastery of Piaget, its sense of chic, its boldness, its exceptional craftsmanship and its audacity.”

For Fatti Laleh, who joined Piaget earlier this year as International Director of Image and Communication, the campaign is a modern take on reviving the legacy of the Piaget Society. “Our Society is a creative movement. Social before social media, this joyful group whether in front or behind the camera connects cultural leaders, pioneers, and modern beauties. It is a home away from home for those who live boldly but with sophistication, those who dare to be rare. Its collective energy has the unique power to open new perspectives and create new spaces where memory and imagination collide. The result is very direct with impactful images, in which I carefully looked to equally valorize our watch and jewellery categories. It’s joyful, it’s extravagant. It’s sophisticated, it’s Piaget”.

ST. BARTS AND THE DIANE BARRIÈRE SPA FOR A BEAUTIFUL HOLIDAY

Nestled within Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf, one of the premium hotels in St.

This feat is achieved with the help of its partners: Ligne Saint Barth, wellbeing made in the Caribbean, and Biologique Recherche, a laboratory at the cutting edge of cosmetics. The new treatment range at the St. Barts spa is evidence of this!

What if the best kind of beauty treatment was simply a slower pace of life? What if the most effective detox cocktail simply tasted of happiness, the salty flavour of the sea, and the scent of sun and monoï on the skin?

What if the very best spa was simply the world around us? A very small part of the world - an authentic, peaceful, enchanting part. An earthly paradise where we all dream of staying, for a few days or a lifetime. A place like St. Barts, the pearl of the Lesser Antilles, an unspoilt, beautiful land, bathed in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

A HAVEN OF WELLBEING

This island is the perfect setting for a rejuvenating stay, such as the one offered by the Hôtel Barrière Le Carl Gustaf. It starts the moment you pack your suitcase, when you dig out your swimsuits, short skirts, Bermuda shorts and little tops from the back of the wardrobe. These clothes deliver the promise of a carefree, sun-kissed break. Already, the dams are breaking and releasing the worst toxins, the ones that destroy your soul - stress, lack of time and routine.

Of course, this promise is not enough in itself to restore your sparkle and get you back on top form. Once you’ve arrived, the hotel’s vast tropical gardens or your ultra-luxurious cocoon with its exotic vibes and panoramic terrace are not enough either. Neither are the delicious breakfasts overlooking the sea, lazy days on the loungers on the Shellona, Carl Gustaf’s private beach, or the sophisticated, gourmet delicacies prepared by Pierre Gagnaire, one of the best chefs in the world and the mentor at Le Fouquet’s St. Barth, one of two restaurants in this five-star hotel. None of this is enough to rejuvenate you, but it’s already doing a great job.

AN EVEREXPANDING TREATMENT RANGE

So what does it take to complete the transformation? The silky-smooth and experienced touch of real experts: the Diane Barrière Spa therapists. With “Tropical lightness”, a relaxing body, face and scalp massage, “Douceur antillaise”, a relaxing, exfoliating body and face massage, and “Signature corps Diane Barrière”, featuring a mixture of stretching, effleurage, massage and pressure in a combination of energetic, neuromuscular techniques, these outstanding beauty and wellbeing professionals do more than just contribute to your vitality and relaxation - they boost it! They get extra help with this from the support of two experts: Ligne Saint Barth and Biologique Recherche.

As its name suggests, the first was created in Saint Barthélemy 30 years ago. Ever since, this laboratory has continually developed its treatment range, using natural ingredients, plants, flowers and fruit from the Caribbean. A close partner of Carl Gustaf and Spa Diane Barrière, it has recently created an exclusive treatment for us, Body Intense. Lasting 60 or 90 minutes, this treatment uses an innovative massage technique to free the body of any builtup muscle tension. Combined with deep movements, targeted pressure on the most sensitive areas, such as the neck, back and trapezius, encourages you to let go and experience an intense, immediate feeling of relaxation and physical and mental release.

And Biologique Recherche? Over 40 years, this French laboratory has built a solid reputation in the world of beauty care. It is renowned for its innovative protocols and pure, highly concentrated products, with minimal marketing and maximum effectiveness. This expertise is fully shared with the Diane Barrière Spa at the Carl Gustaf. The key to this successful partnership is a continually expanding treatment range.

AN INTERVIEW WITH LUXURY MATCHMAKER AND FOUNDER OF IVY RELATIONS INGA VERBEECK

1. What inspired you to create Ivy Relations?

That is in fact a very personal question as my own life and experience did inspire me to do so.

Divorced with a little boy at a young age, friends of mine actually signed me up with a traditional matchmaking agency – gently mentioning I worked too much, was too difficult and didn’t get out enough.

Although charming, the experience was very random yet the concept of meeting people in this particular way intrigued me greatly.

After a bit of research further I switched my career from steel trading to relationship engineering with a focus on recruitment.

2. Some people may feel a little sceptical about using the service you offer, what would you say to people who are a little hesitant?

Life is short and there is no need to stay lost in the jungle that is the dating world anno 2022.

Whilst the world has become so accessible, society has become so much more distant.

Social distancing isn’t just a covid-thing.

With #metoo, social media, the habit of Tinder swiping and other phenomena, genuine dating has become almost impossible.

Think 25 years back when a boy would simply see a girl with a nice smile, walk up to her, look her in the eyes and say hello, and how today the first impression is digital and most likely warped.

And we all know that the digital impression isn’t necessarily authentic nor does it represent a true person, their energy, their charm or charisma.

Traditional and authentic dating with a modern twist in the 21st century where courtship is re-invented, that’s what you’ll discover again at Ivy.

3. Do you accept everyone who applies for a membership or do you have to meet certain criteria?

Every application is followed up with an individual assessment.

We want to make sure we are comfortable working with each individual – and vice versa – and we want to make sure it’s a good fit.

There is no specific list of joining criteria, but rather a personal interview allowing us to decide whether we want to take on the client and can sketch a way forward together.

4. How would you say you differ from other companies who offer a similar experience?

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023
66 EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

Henry Ford once said: “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black.”

Today, you can personally collaborate with the expert designers and craftspeople at Rolls-Royce to create a Rolls-Royce that is as unique as you are.

Our clients are afforded the luxury of determining their own search criteria because we are experts at recruiting exactly the right candidates.

We’ll design your ideal match and with our unique, proactive and targeted methodology, we’ll find her (or him)!

The Ivy group and traditional matchmakers are on opposite ends of the personal service spectrum of dating.

With traditional matchmakers, members will have to trust that expectations will be met by the chances which present themselves at their service provider.

Members are thus at the mercy of the market and who’s available to the matchmaker at the time they wish to date.

5. What would you say is the most common issue people have when they approach you?

People come to us because they don’t find who they are seeking.

Not in daily life, not through any other service.

We will find her (or him). That’s what we do.

In order to successfully date the right person, you need to find that potentially right person and then find a way to engage with them.

Both are proven to be a huge challenge in today’s world.

Ivy will identify and recruit for you to then engage within a trustworthy and safe setting.

Followed with a diligent screening and profiling process we will then be able to create extra-ordinary opportunities and connections where people can meet and explore comfortably.

Authenticity and discretion are prerequisites for those who approach us.

6. Have you had a particular success story that sticks out from the others?

Every story certainly has its charm and every love story we can create is inspiration for the next.

I believe in something I would call trickledown-love-o-nomics where the happiness we create hopefully flows on!

7. Could you tell us what someone might expect when they first approach you?

The very first question I’ll ask is to tell me exactly what you want.

No filter, no judgement, no hesitation: tell me what’s in your mind and heart.

With a mirror in front of you, we’ll be figuring out who you truly desire.

Allow me to don’t understand what rocks your world and what kind of a partner would suit you.

And then I’m sure we’ll find what we’re looking for!

8. Do you expect to see any specific trends arising in 2023?

I believe the trend we will see in 2023 has been rising these last few years: a growing allergic reaction to consumer dating.

Crisis times enhance people’s true desire to revert to “the real thing”, to genuine connection.

Digital tools are intrinsic to today’s world yet will have to be implemented differently.

If anything I see people – including Gen Z – truly seeking genuine and valuable connection.

9. Could you give us a little insight into some of the packages available?

As we offer a truly bespoke, supportive, targeted, discrete and personal service it does come with a price tag representing that value.

Our packages consist of transparent formulas based on a modular service system where we can build the right package for each client.

Each assignment starts with some fixed and required elements and fees, and continuous per milestone and as per progress.

Some clients prefer a slower, very targeted approach whilst others prefer a more intense and explorative journey.

For more information simply send us an email or call on our mobile phone 24/7 : +32 467 020 023.

If you are looking for love, let us help you find it.

LA MIRAGE MANSION: A LUXURIOUS OASIS IN TEXAS

LUXXU has long wanted to envision a mansion in an oasis scenery, replete with luxurious elements and plenty of greenery. Texas emerged as the most evident location to do so, mainly due to its stunning landscape. La Mirage Mansion is the most recent project by LUXXU, epitomizing the concept of modern luxury and taking it to a whole new level. This new project is well-appointed with a wide range of one-ofa-kind designs and a plethora of generous and airy spaces that will make you want to move in right away!

ENTRANCE

This Texan oasis certainly takes full advantage of the open-plan concept. As soon as one enters the mansion, they are immediately marveled by an extensive

area with a palatial feel. It is fully furnished with distinctive designs. A combination of the Magna wall lamp and the Algerone ottoman set the mood for what’s to come. Furthermore, the massive door is adorned with an oversized version of the Skyline door pull that features details in brass and Nero Marquina marble.

HALL

When decorating the mansion, LUXXU opted for a closed hallway with outdoor views. A space for contemplation that seamlessly brings comfort and luxury. The Nubian ottoman becomes ideal for a resting session, the Scarp console, and Algerone mirror add aesthetic value with their characteristic forms. Lastly, a series of Tycho XS small pendants illuminate the area.

LIVING ROOM

High ceilings allow one to appreciate the beauty of each design in their full glory. The Thomson sofa draws attention with its elongated and sophisticated structure. The Algerone set center table and the Charla single sofa serve as superb complements. The Magna chandelier introduces poetic beauty. This piece was inspired by the organic shapes of nature and the awe-inspiring scenery of mountains which goes hand-in-hand with the home’s location. Rounding up the details, the Lloyd bookcase makes quite a statement with its timeless and subtle lines.

DINING ROOM

Once again, the Algerone collection makes its presence known and gives this dining room an architectural attitude and a sense of modern glamour. The Algerone rectangular dining table, for example, is made of Statuario marble and highlights polished brass details. Above, one can find the Waterfall Rectangular suspension, a sensational lighting piece in brass and crystal glass. For extra storage space, the Darian sideboard is at one’s disposition while the Scala mirror, a showcase of high-end craftsmanship brings this room’s decor ornamental game to a new level.

KITCHEN

The Kitchen area most notably combines materials like wood, brass, and marble to create a highly dynamic place. Design elements such as LUXXU’s Skyline suspension or the Galea Swivel bar chair make a difference with their detailed character.

MASTER SUITE

The Master suite is halved into a bedroom and closet space and it is well-appointed with a series of exclusive designs. LUXXU’s Algerone furnishings and Shard luminaires command the modern allure of the suite. For instance, the imposing Algerone bed was placed right at the center while receiving soothing light from the Shard suspension. Furthermore, the Otto sofa and swivel armchairs add mid-century flair and a velvety touch. In the closet area, two Waltz closets provide additional storage space. It highlights both industrial and Art Deco influences that make for an intriguing decor register.

OFFICE

With spectacular views of an oasis exterior, this home office is bound to give you plenty of serenity and creativity for one’s work to flow seamlessly. A lot of bespoke designs constitute the style of this area, including the customized Algerone desk and office chair. LUXXU’s Liberty Slim suspension brights up the area. Its complexity and richness blend harmoniously and is perfect for those who love the attention given to detail.

Upholstered in smooth brown velvet, the Algerone sofa emphasizes classical lines and geometric features that the Algerone family is best known for. The same can be said about the Algerone set center table with marble features that bring forward a timeless aesthetic. The Galea armchairs complete the lounging area with their elegant silhouette.

OUTDOOR

The outdoor area is rather extensive and divided into multiple lounging areas to truly enjoy every section of this Texan landscape. The outdoors are furnished with a series of products by MYSA. The outdoor dining area displays the Vertigo dining table and Charla dining chairs, which perfectly complement each other while the Nebo floor lamp adds sculptural appeal. On the sunbathing/ swimming area, the Hampton sunloungers highlight a more minimalist character with a strong sense of style. The wooden platform to the side portrays the Galea day bed with a fun twist. This conservatory furniture piece benefits from a neutral scheme with pops of terracotta.

On the other side, a Bespoke sofa and center table create stunning visual contrast. The modular sofa with various support tables is a unique piece for large gatherings. For a more intimate setting, LUXXU designed another area with the Hampton Wood sofa and armchairs, the Mayer center table in marble and steel, and the Magna floor lamps, objects of contemplation based on the awe-inspiring beauty of mountains and skylines.

Located in Bel Harbour, a small luxury village in Miami, Florida an amazing interior design is settled paying tribute to what surrounds it.

A NATURE-INSPIRED HOME IN MIAMI A PROJECT CONNECTED TO THE EARTH

Sarah Zohar, director of Sarah Z Designs firm, also based in the city, was responsible for the project and had as her main goal to tell a story and perfectly capture the client’s personality.

The interior combines with the outside, as Bel Harbour is a luxurious and exclusive village, so the project truly expresses the vibe of the surroundings. Sarah was inspired by the nature that encircles the place, as well as by her love for science and wildlife, and that is well visible. Examples of that are the pebble lights, blue shades in fabrics, rugs, and wall-coverings that remind the ocean, as well as natural stone and nature-shaped pieces.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

According to the designer, “the elements, water, sand, stone and lots of glitz were the starting points for the design”, and the living room, the favorite room of Sarah perfectly embraces this logic. Combining natural material, like stone and wood, with natureinspired shapes as Eden Center Table and pebble lighting, this is the star room of the interior design.

Boca do Lobo couldn’t be out of such an incredible project and the brand’s pieces meet the inspiration behind it. With the Lapiaz Oval Center table, in the bedroom, that reminds authentic karst formations, the Glance Mirror, in the entryway, embracing the perfect imperfection that is Nature and the Eden Center Table, in the living room representing a part of a tree, Boca do Lobo was the perfect choice for this challenge.

With intrepid steps I hauled myself up again and again, bare feet on slippery huge boulders, higher and higher, in search of a bubbling gilded spring. I was climbing Papa falls on day one in Dominica, the verdant nature island in the Caribbean.

REVIEW OF SECRET BAY

Never have I challenged myself so intensely on a whim, perhaps drunk on the aweinspiring scenery at these twin falls (Mama falls right beside) in the island’s breathtaking Titou Gorge area.

My friend and I had just met a guide fittingly called Golden himself. Encouraging us it was easy, we took up his challenge to climb to the top of the waterfall to the hot spring of eternal youth, so legend states. And a challenge it was to reach the summit, but well worth it. For the view was mesmerising of the valley below. To a roaring aquatic soundtrack, we gazed at native parrots swooping down to the water from towering palms above.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

We were on the island to stay in its exclusive eco-luxury resort, Secret Bay – an in-theknow boutique hotel, which under-the-radar, has won Best Hotel in the Caribbean twice.

The 11-year-old hotel is situated within lush rainforest and accommodation is made up of magnificent individual treehousestyle villas set on stilts amidst the canopy. Residences are skilfully crafted in beautiful sustainably sourced tropical wood, with the finest of fittings. We noted the gourmet bespoke kitchens with Siemens appliances, outdoor rainforest shower and locally crafted beds, made up with the silkiest of sheets.

To get around, golf buggies roll up and down the steep slopes at the drop of a hat, ferrying residents to their luxury hideaways. Each villa is equipped with an iPhone and you WhatsApp requests directly to your dedicated villa host.

Sherina (our dedicated host) dutifully prepared our breakfast from the organic basket helpfully left for us, which included farm fresh eggs, organic fruit, homemade granola (best we had ever tasted), natural yoghurt and mouth-watering sour sop (a local fruit) and watermelon juices. All hosts are local ladies and will also look after little ones while you relax for up to four hours per day with an additional charge.

Attention to detail is paramount at Secret Bay and I noticed little touches such as helpfully left insect repellent. binoculars (to appreciate the abundant flora and fauna) and even brand-new toys provided for my children, which we were urged to take home as special mementos. The talking parrot was a particular hit (with them, perhaps a little more than with us, to be fair).

The owner is Gregor Nassief - his father purchased sister hotel Fort Young 32 years ago. Originally from Lebanon, as well as being hoteliers, we learned the family have made inroads in industry and manufacturing, with the brands Colgate and Palmolive. US-educated, Gregor’s

company Ceratech is a huge player in Latin America where he was based for many years, before moving back to Dominica 12 years ago.

Secret Bay was built next to the family’s beach residence. Gregor originally bought an initial five acres of land, which included the beach he used to play on as a child and vowed to build a beautiful villa for his then fiancée Sandra. The design for the first villa was actually a wedding gift from Sandra’s father, renowned Latin American architect, Fruta Vivas. Such was the success of the first Secret Bay villa, that plans were hatched to add more, thus the eco-luxury haven that would become Secret Bay resort was born.

The resort is run by the affable General Manager Dinesh Kissoon, who joined just after hurricane Maria hit the island in 2017. Dinesh talks a lot about Secret Bay’s USP –‘the luxury of time and space’, where guests can totally switch off and unwind (7-10 nights is the average break). Chatting over our dinner in the no-menu concept Zing Zing restaurant (he regularly joins guests) we learned Secret Bay started with just four villas and no amenities. The team looked benevolently at the storm damage, and said it gave the hotel the chance to evolve. And evolve it did, joining luxe group Relais and Chateaux soon after in 2019. Secret Bay currently works with 23 tour operators, but this number is growing.

After reopening post-hurricane, the restaurant, which used to be a two-bed villa, took a sustainable approach to its cuisine – its motto is earth to table. Seafood, including prime lobster, takes pride of place in the dishes the talented culinary team creates – to be expected from the first luxury hotel on the island. We also tried delicacies such as the provision croquet – with root veg and spicy mayo. As the island grows no potatoes, the arguably healthier local produce of plantain, dasheen and cassava are in abundance. The genial Restaurant Supervisor Sheldon

proudly helps guests choose from the everchanging range of dishes (no two days are ever the same) and interestingly we heard a new chef’s garden was to open and Bush teas were to be added to the menu, with ingredients foraged from the forest.

The concept of Secret Bay is unique and continually progressing. We discovered the hotel plans to go from the current 12 to 42 villas as part of a multi-year expansion project. Four new clifftop villas are scheduled for completion by the end of this year. Although you wouldn’t know

it walking around – building works are cleverly masked and seem to seamlessly blend with the forest thanks to discreet panels. A range of new residences are being offered for sale with prices from $1,500,000, with the added benefit of obtaining a second Dominican passport through the island’s Citizenship by Investment scheme.

Secret Bay guests and owners have two secluded swimmable beaches to choose from with access to a third stunning beach being made seamless with the addition of paths across the resort. The property is also

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 92 LUXURY TRAVEL
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

developing a special ‘Iguana path’ to attract Secret Bay’s other special guests – we saw a total of four of these native reptiles on our stay, small and large. You can’t help but notice the resort is in fact peppered with the sounds of nature. Tropical birds, cicadas and frogs all chirp away night and day, around each luxury abode.

Additionally, there will be a new all-day restaurant and kombucha brewery, with a mini movie theatre for children to be entertained while parents dine. The hotel also is also up on trends and plans to install a pickleball court – the new craze in the US, a fast combination of tennis, badminton, and ping pong. Along with this, two new gyms will open – one a ‘jungle gym’ and one open air.

The resort aims to showcase the sea to guests with its own water sports and leisure boats, plus inlet Marina. Secret Bay also values the ocean, running the only coral restoration programme and nursery on Dominica planting new corals.

Paramount to the Secret Bay guest experience is relaxation. Secret Bay has a small semi-outdoor therapy suite overlooking the sea. We experienced a heavenly massage, with Tilly as our therapist and the resort recently acquired a wellness consultant from Switzerland to relaunch its spa concept as ‘Micro-Spas’ – different spa experiences dotted over the property.

If you are a budding Yogi, the yoga deck at Secret Bay is the most blissful location I have ever practised. Raised above beach level, you are afforded dramatic sea views and experience the soundtrack of lapping waves throughout the class. Yoga is taught by Lulu, who trained 16 years ago in San Diego.

Lulu’s class was responsive to our needs, as she quickly picked up on our level, practise and intentions. Calming and kind, I found she perfectly suited the bespoke ethos of Secret Bay. Our class was a blend of Hatha and Vinyasa and Lulu ended with the most beautiful mantra - “everything you’ve done in your life has brought you to this moment right now”. And as I laid in Shavasana, I recounted the many magnificent moments we were lucky enough to experience over just a few sacred days at Secret Bay.

HOTEL REVIEW OF WL, ST LUCIA

It was the great Coco Chanel who stated “luxury must be comfortable, otherwise it is not luxury” - a motto by which I believe all good hoteliers should work and live.

Last month all our luxury needs were duly met at the world-renowned Windjammer Landing Villa Beach Resort, the ‘in-theknow’ favourite for families visiting the lush Caribbean Island of St Lucia.

St Lucia, approximately 27 miles long and 14 miles wide, boasts waterfalls, drivein volcanoes, sulphur springs and the UNESCO world heritage sanctioned Pitons – the mountains based in Soufriere.

Windjammer Landing is set across a steep incline, sweeping down to a calm crescent-shaped beach. The property has a Mediterranean style, with six swimming pools, a selection of restaurants and bars, an upmarket spa, well-equipped gym with programme of classes, extensive water

sports centre (including Windsurfing, SUP, kayaking, snorkelling and diving) and active kids club. It has luxury waterfront villas, beachfront suites, hillside bedrooms and

individual luxury residences (largest is up to 2,700 sq ft, catering for 12 guests) with pools – all with varying views across Labrolette Bay and the Caribbean Sea.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 98 LUXURY TRAVEL
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

We stayed in a magnificent hillside villa. The property had its own private driveway and garden. On entering, you were struck by the cool white and blue décor, high ceilings and smart split level open plan living area, with kitchen and dining areas on an upper level and sitting room on lower level, with patio doors out to our sparkling infinity pool. Both master and twin bedrooms lead off these spaces – both spacious rooms with uber-comfortable beds, plenty of cupboard space (great for long-term guests) and palatial bathrooms.

Guests can request a dedicated chef for their stay, for the ultimate in luxury. And regardless of where you reside on the property during your trip, whether up the hill or closer to the beach, there is a fleet of minivan shuttles to take you to and from the lobby, spa or kids club. We never waited more than five mins for one to arrive.

The resort offers five superb restaurants and three bars – each with its own distinctive style and ambience. We started our days with breakfast in the Dragonfly restaurant, overlooking the beach and main pool. We tended to take lunch in the laid-back Caribbean-style Jammer’s or in the BBQgrill spot Embers, which served delicious pizzas and wraps. Both were also great for dinner, if you were wanting a more relaxed affair. We enjoyed the sea food menu in Dragonfly one night – specialities were the likes of ahi tuna tartar, Lucian coconut shrimp and pan-seared scallops in a lemon butter sauce. My vegetarian main of

cauliflower steak fried with Colombo spices, cumin, fennel and paprika was delicious.

Our favourite last meal however was an Italian in Papa Don’s on the hillside –named after the hotel’s founder. We sat at our table, adorned with a pretty blue and white checked tablecloth, looking down on to the restaurant’s own curved pool and further afield the sea. My Caprese salad followed by a special of aubergine served Milanese-style both were meltingly moreish on the tongue.

Windjammer Landing has a large spa, which is located next to the tennis courts and gym. A calmness pervades on walking in, as the receptionists greet you in hushed tones and the trickle from an elaborate water fountain

provides a relaxing soundtrack, while you decide on your treatment. There are four treatment rooms, two couples’ suites, a Japanese tub and an outdoor shower. We tried a couples massage, and it was truly heavenly.

We also discovered that post-pandemic the resort is reshaping its spa offering, with a new spa menu made up of new, innovative therapies and beauty treatments, all of which take inspiration from the local area. New Director of Spa & Wellness, Alex Danila, plans to focus on wellbeing and offer future guests more of an all-encompassing sanctuary, by providing tailored wellbeing and fitness classes focusing heavily on breathwork, nutrition and postural alignment classes.

Try the new Full Moon Spa Ritual, an evening spent at the beach including a night boat ride in Labrelotte Bay, a Yin yoga session with guided meditation, signature massage, communal plant-based dinner, and stargazing session. Guests have the option to add an underwater night dive, focusing on underwater breathwork for an additional fee. The resort has also launched three new retreats focusing on Detox, Immunity and Weight Loss.

Windjammer Landing offers a plethora of activities – so many you most likely won’t be able to try them all.

Try Hummingbird yoga – set in a lush, picturesque hilltop garden overlooking the sea, whereby feeders are placed in the trees attracting the hummingbirds while you practise. Or book a Sunset Beach Picnic, the resort’s newest private dining experience, on an intimate section of the white sand beach. The picnic offers guests to choose their small bites, paired with prosecco and wine, served barefoot on a colourful table. Maggiore Project M is an exclusive project to relive the fantastic 80s with the most modern technology and the finest materials.

A perfect mix of Heritage, Design, Technology, and Italian Style to create unique and totally customizable pieces, like a tailored suit.

Only 40 cars will be produced, all following the wishes of each customer.

M like Maggiore, but also M like Magnum P.I., the iconic series tv where Tom Selleck shared the show with his amazing Ferrari 308, a car with a soul and with an unmistakable line which can survive through the ages.

The project is a genuine “tribute”, not in the sense of nostalgia but rather giving new life to cars that in time might have been relegated to museums or closed in the garages of collectors.

A modern reinterpretation of an iconic star of 80s, using the best technology and a deep attention to Heritage and Design.

The donor car is a real Ferrari 308 and the starting point are the original chassis and the original engine, but then all the parts have been completely re-Designed and re-built to guarantee reliability and performance of these days with a vintage allure.

The Engine has been rebuilt by Italtecnica, a well-known Italian company specialized in racing and special projects.

The body is completely realized in carbon fiber to reduce the weight, all the mechanical components have been upgraded or re-Designed and the interiors have been refreshed with high end materials, such as leather, carbon fiber and marble, a touch of our roots and a sign of our customization program.

The research into the materials and colours to use was carried out by the Studio Stefan Scholten, a Design studio based in Amsterdam with many Italian influences. It was precisely this union of modern Northern European design commingling with Italian culture and Mediterranean styles that inspired us to choose this studio as partner for the development of this project.

There will not exist 2 cars with the same specs!

The internal components of the engine are all new, the suspensions are made of lightweight aluminum alloy, a new Brembo brake system and bigger alloy wheels.

The aim of Automobili Maggiore was to put the driver back at the center of the stage, that’s why you can find a manual gearbox and a high rev natural aspirated engine ready to go up to 8000 rpm.

BENTLEY’S ULTIMATE GRAND TOURER BEGINS REAL-WORLD TESTING

The Bentley Batur has begun real-world road trials across Europe. Following its debut at Monterey Car Week in August 2022 and attendance at numerous events for Bentley Customers, global media and the public, two development Baturs are now starting a rigorous programme of tests to ensure the highest standards of vehicle performance and quality.

The limited series of just 18 examples are due to begin deliveries mid-2023 after completion and sign-off of an extensive engineering program.

The validation activities include durability for both the engine and whole vehicle, environmental compatibility & sunlight simulation, high speed stability, aerodynamics, noise & vibration, and driving dynamics. More than 120 individual tests in all cover everything from the quality of the surface finish of the gold “organ stop” ventilation controls to the new W12 engine hardware and software. Over 58 weeks of vehicle validation have been

scheduled across the two pre-series cars, supplementing 100+ weeks of vehicle development already completed to validate the increased engine power, making the Batur the most powerful Bentley in history with at least 740 PS.

The first activity for one of the development Batur’s – Car #0 - is an extensive 2,500 kilometre drive across Europe to simulate real world conditions. The route leaves Germany and travels through Italy, France and Spain before high speed testing work is undertaken at proving grounds.

Paul Williams, Chief Technical Officer for Mulliner, comments:

“At the start of the project it was clear that this car had to be the ultimate GT and so every element from the exterior design, engine power and hand-crafted interior has been created without compromise.

“There are a number of unique features that bring new challenges. For example, the exterior headlamps are very compact LED units and made to our styling teams challenging proportions, which transforms the exterior appearance of the car but are complex to produce. We’re also working with the most powerful development of the W12 in its 20-year history, which brings an enormous validation programme.

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

“Even small details such as the angle of the diamond in the front grille representing the cylinder angle in the W12 engine have had to be considered. And even though there will only be 18 Baturs produced, the level of quality has to be identical to every one of the 15,000 cars Bentley is currently producing each year.”

At the proving grounds, Batur Car #0 will begin seven weeks of durability work on handling tracks, mixed road conditions, high speed testing and abusive surface conditions. During all of these activities data and feedback are collated ensuring the technical targets are being met.

When the proving ground work is complete, another 7,500 kilometres of real world driving will be undertaken before environmental testing commences. In just under four weeks the car will endure 600 hours of solar loading - equivalent to five years in an Arizona desert. This is particularly important for the new sustainable materials used in the exterior components, as an alternative to carbon fibre.

By the time the first customer deliveries begin, over 810 unique parts will have completed 160 weeks of testing and development, delivering the ultimate coachbuilt grand tourer.

THE PINNACLE W12 GRAND TOURER

The Batur will also be the most powerful Bentley yet, with a 729+ Bhp (740+ PS) version of the iconic, hand-assembled 6.0-litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine that has metaphorically and literally powered Bentley’s success for the last two decades.

Over 100+ weeks of powertrain development have already been completed to confirm the new air intake system, modified turbochargers, revised intercoolers and new calibrations for the engine gearbox and electronic stability control for the pinnacle W12.

As the engine enters its twilight years as part of Bentley’s Beyond100 transformation journey to being fully electrified, the Batur forms the first part of a celebration of the W12’s extraordinary power, torque and refinement. Engine performance will be matched to the most advanced Bentley chassis ever, with Speed-tuned air suspension, electric active anti-roll control, eLSD, four-wheel steering and torque vectoring.

BATUR CAR #0

All 18 customer Baturs are already reserved. Each one is being designed collaboratively with each customer, guided by Mulliner’s in-house design team.

Customers will be able to specify the colour and finish of practically every surface of the Batur, to create a car as individual as they are. From the main exterior paint to the surface finish of the air vents, and literally everything in between, each customer will specify even the tiniest of details.

The engineering development car – Batur Car #0 – has had the same level of attention to detail as a customer’s own specification. The exterior paintwork is a bespoke colour – Purple Sector – that provides a deep vibrant colour across the curvaceous surfaces. The bodywork is underscored by front splitters, side skirts and rear diffuser in a high gloss natural fibre finish.

The front of the car features a grille of exceptional art – with the main matrix finished in Gloss Dark Titanium, accented with contrast chevrons in a horizontal ombré pattern that flows from Purple Sector in the centre and gradually darken to the sides to Black Crystal. The “endless bonnet” line is finished in Satin Titanium paint, as are the 22” wheels – with the spokes in Gloss and Satin Black Crystal to match the grille.

One small addition customers will not receive that can be seen on Batur Car #0 are the small white arrowheads found at the edges of the body panels. These markers help to provide feedback on panel movement and any form of relaxation whilst the car is undertaking the durability testing.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE OF COACHBUILDING

The Mulliner Bacalar was the first coachbuilt project in recent years which gave significant insight into Bentley’s customers and customer choice. For Batur an even greater selection of options have been developed, not only including colours, materials and finishes, but also new technology such as the Mulliner by Naim Audio system. This takes the Naim Audio system from the Continental GT and transforms it with 20 new Focal speakers, exclusively configured for Batur and custom tuned into a truly immersive class-leading Audio experience.

The design team have given the Batur a unique character with a combination of high end materials and finishes. This is a significant stepping stone towards sustainable material and construction methods, from Additive Manufactured Gold to sustainable hide and natural fibre veneers.

Using advanced manufacturing techniques it is possible for tooling investment to be kept to a minimum which drives lower material and energy usage in the manufacturing processes. Pending successful testing, Mulliner also plan to use natural fibres as an alternative to carbon fibre is some areas of the car. This is a significant reduction in carbon required to produce the materials in these parts.

Sustainability plays a key role in the Batur to help drive the development of sustainable features for future generations of coachbuilt Bentley’s, using Mulliner’s coachbuilding experience as the platform for innovation in line with Bentley’s sustainability goals. www.bentleymotors.com

Theon Design has revealed its latest bespoke commission, a fully restored and enhanced Porsche 911 (964) that blends a number of exciting company firsts with Theon’s core values of worldclass design and engineering.

THEON DESIGN REVEALS BEL001 – FURTHER ENHANCING THE AIRCOOLED EXPERIENCE WITH FIRST SUPERCHARGED COMMISSION

Destined for a discerning customer from Belgium, BEL001 is the first Theon commission to feature its 400bhp supercharged flat-six cylinder engine and also features semi-active suspension, resulting in a redefined 911 that pushes the boundaries of the air-cooled experience to exhilarating new heights.

As with all Porsche 911s enhanced by Theon Design, BEL001 is defined by total purity of purpose, mixing OEM-level design, quality and manufacturing techniques, with an obsessive approach to detail – all in a bespoke package tailored to the customer’s exacting desires. Each Theon Design commission represents an individual’s Porsche 911 fantasy brought to life.

As Hawley explains: “For BEL001, the customer wanted a highly-usable, modernised, air-cooled 911, one that combined classic Porsche driving dynamics with real grand touring ability. With BEL001 we’ve certainly delivered on the brief; it’s a car that’s just as at home dissecting a British B-road as it is blasting across the open roads of Europe.”

DESIGN-LED

Founded in 2016, Oxfordshire, UK-based Theon Design is headed by Adam Hawley, a car designer with over 20 years of experience working for leading OEMs, such as BMW, Jaguar, Lotus and Lexus. The Theon Design team – comprising experts in automotive design, engineering, engine and chassis development, as well as trim and vehicle manufacturing – is united around a singular objective: creating the ultimate air-cooled 911.

The company evolved from Hawley’s obsessive desire to build the perfect 911 – one that teamed the looks and driver involvement of an analogue classic with modern comfort, driveability and performance. “At Theon our goal is to enhance the classic Porsche 911 formula, applying an OEM-like approach with Computer Aided Design (CAD) and manufacture to ensure the highest possible quality and finish,” explains Hawley.

BEL001, like every one of Theon’s meticulously developed, sympathetically enhanced commissions, was first stripped to a bare metal shell and rebuilt from the ground up to its exacting ‘OEM+’ standards. Once again honouring Stuttgart’s rich heritage and engineering ethos, BEL001 benefits from a focus on CAD assisted lightweighting throughout.

The results are clear to see: BEL001 distils and enhances the essence of the aircooled 911 – while incorporating modern innovations that lift performance into a new realm.

SUPERCHARGED POWER

The first area of innovation lies in BEL001’s beautifully resolved engine bay: the supercharged air-cooled flat-six. The 3.6-litre unit has been built and expertly calibrated to ensure it meets, and indeed surpasses, the discerning customer’s exacting performance and driveability brief. While breaking new ground with the flatsix’s supercharged configuration, the team has gone to great lengths to ensure that the ‘Porsche’ feel of the motor is retained.

Power builds in a linear fashion as the revs rise and the supercharger spins faster, pulling with ever increasing force, with a further kick in the upper reaches of the rev band.

With 400 bhp and 367 lb/ft of torque, BEL001’s supercharged motor gives the best of all worlds: total tractability with accessible, lag-free supercharged torque, while retaining the spellbinding top-end surge of a motorsport-honed, naturally

aspirated Porsche flat-six. Breathing through a bespoke switchable, stainlesssteel exhaust system with equal length headers, the motor’s distinct howl remains front and centre – with only a subtle aural hint of forced induction.

As with all Theon powerplants, BEL001’s supercharged flat-six has been entirely rebuilt and re-engineered, with independent throttle bodies, flowed and ported heads, a lightened bottom end, motorsport grade Mahle barrels and pistons, as well as Carillo rods and custom profile camshafts.

The compact supercharger is packaged with Theon’s typical elegance - in keeping with its ‘OEM+’ standards. Nestled just to the right of the gleaming engine, the Rotrex Supercharger is installed where the original air-conditioning unit used to sit, making use of the existing mounting-points, now significantly reinforced to ensure there is no movement or flex, even in the most extreme of driving situations. The compact Rotrex centrifugal unit was developed in close collaboration with the Danish company, which uses a patented traction drive technology to deliver superior efficiency, reduced emissions and exceptional responsiveness.

Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 THE ART OF LUXURY 111 AUTOMOTIVE

BEL001 also features twin charge coolers, mounted – with typical Theon attention to detail - on the opposite side of the motor to the supercharger, ensuring the engine bay remains symmetrical. The units work in tandem with a neatly integrated water-methanol injection system - another predictably neat Theon Design solution; the setup delivers all the additional cooling the car needs, while also boosting engine performance.

As Hawley explains: “We opted for the charge coolers as they negate the need for an intercooler - challenging to package in a 964’s compact engine bay. This setup means we can avoid adding air intake apertures to the bodywork, retain the super-clean, distinctly ‘Theon’ look that’s so important to us, both in the engine bay, and externally. The water-methanol solution adds an additional source of cooling, whilst also upping the octane rating of the fuel from 98 to 110+, providing a significant increase in power, too.”

Such power and accessible torque in a car that tips the scales at 1265kg with all fluids and a full tank of fuel – thanks to the extensive programme of CAD assisted lightweighting – ensures a delightfully muscular delivery, and visceral, highly-responsive performance.

Driving through its original 911 (964) G50 five-speed manual gearbox – fully-rebuilt by Theon Design to deliver perfect shift quality – and a new limited-slip differential, the driver is given total control of the enthralling air-cooled powerplant. Theon Design also offers a comprehensive range of high-performance naturally-aspirated engine options – from 3.6-litre, 3.8-litre and 4.0-litre naturally aspirated configurations – along with turbocharged solutions, giving customers total choice.

TOTAL CONTROL, ON ROAD OR TRACK

As one might expect, with such abundant power and Theon’s well-known attention to detail, the team has gone to great lengths to deliver total dynamic control. The significant innovation here extends to the sophisticated suspension setup: BEL001 features switchable adaptive dampers.

Developed in conjunction with renowned experts TracTive, BEL001’s damping has been exhaustively honed over countless hours on the undulating roads that surround Theon’s Oxfordshire base, as well as on track. The system offers exemplary dynamic composure; the five switchable modes deliver a broad operating bandwidth, instantly adjustable via a bespoke, beautifully-integrated metal rotary switch, developed specially to preserve the minimalist, pared back look of the interior.

The TracTive system’s five damping modes – carefully defined by Theon’s development engineers working conjunction with the geometry experts at Centre Gravity – give BEL001 enormous breadth of ability, making it at home on any road surface, whether a cobbled street, bumpy b-road, or, should the owner desire, the smooth, flat tarmac of a race track.

PRECISION MEETS BEAUTY

Theon’s enhancements continue with the body and construction. The classic 911

shape – for BEL001 finished in a stunning shade of ‘Aquamarine’, based on a historic 1950s Porsche 356 colour – is deftly honed by the team for the now signature Theon Design look. The lustrous paint work is complemented by subtle tonal stripes, while yellow PORSCHE script adorns the lower sides of the doors and the engine lid, lending the exterior a motorsport inspired edge.

The CAD modelled body – inspired by Porsche’s illustrious back catalogue – teams the ‘long hood’ of earlier 911s with the wider arches of a later ST or G-Series/964, for a perfectly proportioned 911 shape that is both delicate and purposeful.

The bodywork itself makes extensive use of carbon fibre – sourced from a leading F1 supplier, one of the numerous technological partnerships made possible by Theon’s prime location, in the heart of Britain’s ‘Motorsport Valley’. The carbon panels, as with all components on the car, are digitised and modelled in 3D design software to deliver an OEM-grade fit, working to the tightest possible tolerances.

The sympathetic enhancements continue beneath the carbon-fibre skin; the wiring loom has been replaced with a simplified modern, solution, while the original airconditioning unit is swapped out for a new, efficient, lightweight unit. When the car left the factory, these items were mounted high up on the back of the engine. Theon Design replaced them with much more powerefficient units. They are now positioned low-down in the front of the car, which

THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023 112 AUTOMOTIVE
THE ART OF LUXURY Issue 56 2023

helps achieve a near-ideal 50:50 weight distribution. And with a full tank of fuel, the Theon Design BEL001 weighs just 1265kg.

Hawley adds: “Attention to, or even obsession with, detail is central to everything we do at Theon. Our team go to extreme lengths to ensure that each commission delivers an exceptional driving experience; every component scrutinised and assessed with a laser-like focus, then tweaked to deliver optimal performance, quality, and refinement – it’s how we deliver on our ‘OEM+’ philosophy.

“With our use of 3D modelling we can apply a forensic approach to enhancements throughout the car – even with components hidden far from view – they’re all equally important to us. The carefully considered, incremental changes made throughout the car add up to make a significant difference, delivering an ultra-responsive, highly sophisticated driving experience. It’s the manifestation of our ‘purity of purpose’ approach, which really does set us apart, and elevate the cars we build.”

PERSONALISED, ENHANCED INTERIOR

The digital, ground-up design and modelling process enables Theon to carefully tailor each unique commission, working collaboratively with a customer to deliver an entirely individual creation. The personalisation potential Theon offer extends throughout each bespoke creation, from mechanical specification and exterior

details, to the beautifully appointed interiors.

BEL001 features ‘touring’ front seats, based on Porsche Recaro frames and mechanisms, but modified with updated and custom shaped foams, elevating comfort and support in equal measure. The seats are then impeccably trimmed in soft tan leather. The rest of the interior is trimmed in matching tan leather, with black accents, all complemented by body colour matched elements on the dash, doors and rear quarter panels.

Ahead of the driver, the distinctive, easy to read gauges feature numerals picked out in the classic Porsche green, against an black coloured backing. The car’s centre console is constructed from carbon fibre, then wrapped in leather, blending lightweight construction and hand trimmed luxury.

The Nardi steering wheel has been custom stitched to match the car’s interior by Nardi itself. Even the car’s ‘frunk’ is finished to the same exquisite detail as the rest of BEL001, wrapped in black leather, matching the leather-wrapped carbon fibre fuel tank. Theon Design has also fitted a 964 RS strut-brace, again wrapped in leather – this time matching the tan interior.

SUBTLY INTEGRATED CONVENIENCE

charger, mounted behind the dashboard, allows a smartphone to be seamlessly attached, providing control for the sound system and providing satellite navigation.

Cable operated heater controls, which have the beautiful, manual, tactile feel of those found on a 1970’s Porsche 911, are also fitted while the heater is, of course, a modern, highly efficient heating and airconditioning unit.

Hawley concludes: “We really are excited to be revealing BEL001 to the world – our most ambitious, technologically-advanced project yet. We are once again delivering on a specific client specification, instilling the car with thrilling visceral performance while using our design and engineering expertise to hone and evolve the 911’s distinct, captivating character, all to our exacting ‘OEM+’ standards.

“BEL001’s innovations, both in terms of its thrilling supercharged motor and sophisticated adaptive damping setup, showcase Theon Design at its best; delivering beautifully resolved, exquisitely engineered enhancements that - in terms of both outright performance and pure driving enjoyment - elevate the air-cooled Porsche 911 experience to a whole new level.

Prices for Theon Design commissions start at £380,000. Each car is a totally unique collaboration with the customer and takes 18 months to build. Price excludes donor car and applicable local taxes.

London Art Fair has partnered with London’s Ben Uri Gallery and Museum for its annual Museum Partnership. The Museum Partnership provides a prominent London platform and significant opportunity for patrons, collectors and general Fair visitors to engage with an exhibition of exceptional museum quality works – bringing some of our most important regional private collections into the public domain.

The works on display, which include paintings and sculptures, focus on the immigrant experience, speaking to the rich contribution to British art made by Jewish, immigrant, and refugee artists which is Ben Uri’s DNA. The collection includes Frank Auerbach’s Mornington Crescent, Summer Morning II, David Bomberg’s Racehorses and an artwork by British-Iranian visual artist Zory Shahrokhi which was commissioned by Ben Uri in response to Liberators: 12 Extraordinary Women Artists from the Ben Uri Collection.

In 2018, the Museum published a transformative Strategic Plan which

propelled a prescient shift to create the first full-scale digital museum and research centre which complemented Ben Uri’s vibrant gallery programming. The redefined, fully digitised unique collection reflects the wider immigrant landscape and contribution to British Art, including 880 works by 390 artists from 45 different countries of birth.

Encounters

Encounters is a new section launching at London Art Fair 2023 curated by journalist, curator, and member of the Encounters Selection Committee, Pryle Behrman.

Formerly Art Projects, Encounters is a showcase of the freshest contemporary art from across the globe featuring young, up and coming galleries eager to present their emerging artists on a major platform alongside established names who are creating new and exciting work, taking their practice in a different direction.

The new section of curated solo and group presentations is where the two meanings of the word ‘encounter’ meet. An encounter is often unexpected, perhaps leading to the discovery of an unknown

artist or, alternatively, an unexpected style or theme; an encounter can also suggest a confrontation between opposing positions and artworks that challenge entrenched views and understandings.

Highlights include a display by Shame Gallery whose pieces by Nathan French, originally a fashion designer, reference the multiplicity of tempers, moods and thoughts that occur inside every one of us; Catherine Anholt’s paintings at TIN MAN ART see the artist exploring a range of emotions and experiences spanning childhood, parenting, the natural world, birth and death, having previously been primarily known as an author and illustrator of children’s books. At April Contemporary, an installation by Luqmaan Godfrey – the artist alter ego of muralist Damilola Odusote – combines mixed media drawings, poems, texts, collages, and murals to present ‘reality’ as a continually changing map that is both malleable and wholly transient.

For 2023, Photo50 is curated by Pelumi Odubanjo and Katy Barron, who will present the work of a group of multigenerational women and nonbinary photographers whose practice engages with their Black and diasporic heritage. Through their lens, the exhibition will explore domestic life and the idea of ‘home’.

The exhibition echoes Saidiya Hartmann’s Wayward Lives, Beautiful Experiments: Intimate Histories of Riotous Black Girls, Troublesome Women, and Queer Radicals, as such, this year’s exhibition is named Beautiful Experiments. Beautiful Experiments includes works from the 1980s through to the present day and presents diverse imagery by artists that reflects their histories and personal ideas of home and identity. The exhibition will think through ideas of ‘home’ in a number of ways - as a safe space, a queer space, an invisible space, a space of isolation, a place of memory, and the notion of home outside of the family home. It will consider the difference between generational approaches, and the wide-ranging uses of photographs and archival materials.

LIMITED EDITION EXPRESSIONS FROM ABERFELDY

ABERFELDY have released two new limited edition expressions in their Aberfeldy Red Wine Cask Collection; ABERFELDY 15 Year Old finished in Cabernet Sauvignon wine casks from Napa Valley, and ABERFELDY 18 Year Old finished in Tuscan red wine casks from Bolgheri, available on shop.dewars.com.

The ABERFELDY Limited Edition series is meticulously crafted by Malt Master, Stephanie Macleod. Being highly accomplished in the sensory analyses of whisky, this collection was born through Stephanie’s inherent passion for maturation and flavour development. Inspired by her adoration of fine wine, Stephanie began the exploration of how flavours from red wine casks interact with and elevate Aberfeldy’s aged malt. Painstakingly nosing each cask to monitor maturation and flavour development within the Aberfeldy inventory, the use of Stephanie’s sensory skills ensures that every whisky has been expertly finished, is flavoursome, balanced, and brimming with distillery character.

The first Single Malt in the collection was launched in 2019. Finished in Pomerol wine casks, the inaugural expression started Aberfeldy’s journey into French red wine; and the four subsequent bottlings further explored the famous reds of the esteemed Bordeaux and Rhone wine appellations. Evolving to include red wines from further afield, the newest bottlings to be released widen the collection’s offering to encompass cask finishes from both an Old World wine and a New World wine.
