FEARLESS CURATION MEETS MAXIMALIST LIVING
IN COCONUT GROVE RETREAT
MR ALEX TATE Guided by a philosophy of fearless curation and a celebration of curiosity, interior design studio mr alex tate transformed an ultra modern new build in Coconut Grove home into a vibrant and whimsical maximalist’s retreat. Creating a dynamic, color-filled home that turns away from minimalism and embraces bold, eclectic design with intention and joy. Working closely with daring homeowners eager for a space that reflects its inhabitants. Every space was treated as an opportunity to tell a story… With a linear layout stretching North to South and an upper floor organized down a long corridor, the project required thoughtful spatial planning to create balance and flow. Through fearless curation and meticulous attention to detail, mr alex tate brought a distinct sense of identity to every corner, turning the home into a living gallery of patterns, objects, and personal expression. You can see mr alex
tate’s passion for the Victorian era of prolific collecting in the dining area with a sideboard overflowing with art, ornaments and flowers. The kitchen, once a minimalist linear space, underwent a complete redesign featuring Waterworks cabinetry. A bold new layout introduced a peninsula, central island, smaller workstation island, and wet bar, making it both a functional hub and a visual anchor of the first floor. Upstairs, each bedroom was treated as a unique design chapter. From traditionalmeets-modern toile and ceiling wallpaper pairings to tactile, fabriclined walls and layered patterns in the guest suites, the bedrooms became immersive environments of their own. All en suite, the private spaces echo the project’s overall ethos: fearless, thoughtful, and unexpected. The team at mr alex tate designed a bold new layout for the project, overcoming the challenge of transforming the ultra-modern, minimalist layout into a cohesive yet defined living experience. On the first floor, what was once an open, undefined expanse is now a
series of intimately scaled spaces. Using semi-permanent fabric walls, the studio introduced division without compromising the home’s airiness, offering both function and flexibility. These new walls also provided surfaces for art and décor, enhancing the sense of curated storytelling throughout the home.

THE BRILLIANT NEW BERBER
FROM LOUIS DE POORTERE With its modern reimagination of traditional tribal design, Berber is one of the many new styles found in the Ecorugs 2025 Collection from Louis De Poortere.
The traditional bi-coloured designs of Morocco’s Beni Ouarain tribe are the inspiration behind Berber, the latest addition to the Structures Collection of textured Ecorugs by Louis De Poortere. Translating the ancient tribal patterns with a vibrant, contemporary palette, Berber reinterprets the hand-woven originals for today’s home. The bold, high-contrast colour combinations, textures changes and simplistic patterning breathe new life into the rich heritage of the design. The rug is available in eight sizes, ranging from 80cm x 150cm up to an impressive 280cm x 390cm, with a 240cm circular option. As part of Louis De Poortere’s Ecorugs collection, Berber is machine woven from 40% recycled PET (polyester). In fact, the whole rug is made from polyester – the backing and even the label are made from the material – so that it can be recycled through the Take Care programme. Alan Russell, sales director, says, “On the back of every Berber rug you’ll find a Take Care label with a QR code on. This is the way we get rugs back so we can put them directly into our reuse and recycling stream. There’s no more hopeful disposal at the local tip or downcycling into lower grade goods, owners simply scan the label to arrange return to us for cleaning up and re-sale or recycling back into another Ecorug. While we still have a way to go, we hope that one day every Ecorug sold will be made with old Ecorugs.” Because of the all-polyester construction, Berber is also machine washable. Owners can place their Ecorug on a slow spin cycle at 30°C and hang dry to wash out dirt and stains and restore the vibrancy of colour and richness of texture in every design. The rug comes in four colours combined with offwhite: the gold of ERG, green Oasis, charcoal Caidal and terracotta Ksar.

ARGENTA PRESENTS ETERNA: THE NEW MARBLE COLLECTION THAT COMBINES TECHNIQUE, MATERIAL, AND BALANCE
In the image, the volumes of a house appear carved from a single block of stone. Flavia’s surface clads the façade with a travertine reinterpretation in ceramic form, where the vertical veining becomes a constructive rhythm. The precision of the joints and the continuity of the pattern allow the building to be read as an orderly sequence of coherent and sober planes. The sand tone and linear texture add a sense of naturalness. When light falls on the façade, it creates a play of delicate shadows that modulate the surface and give depth to the composition.
The Japanese architect Tadao Ando wrote that light changes matter, and matter changes light. This relationship defines much of his work and also encapsulates the idea behind contemporary architecture: materials do not merely occupy space—they transform it. Precision, texture, and detail determine how light is perceived, how space is organized, and how it is inhabited.
It is with this vision that Eterna was born, a new ceramic collection developed by Argenta as a demonstration of its technical and material expertise. The project brings together different marbles from around the world, reinterpreted through contemporary ceramics, each crafted to reproduce the essence of the natural material and adapt to
various finishes—polished, matte, honed, or bush-hammered. More than a series, Eterna is a collection of collections that explores the relationship between material, proportion, and light. Its goal is to expand the constructive possibilities of marble through the technical precision and graphic control that define Argenta.

FLAVIA: SEQUENCE, COHERENCE, AND MATERIAL SOBRIETY.
Inside the dining room, the material retains its character but becomes more inviting: the veins flow with the direction of the light, the joints vanish, and the overall impression is one of continuity. The honed finish introduces a subtle natural sheen that expands the perception of space and balances the mineral texture of the background. The detail of each piece reveals exceptional precision: a calibrated pattern, a consistent tone, and a relief that maintains the sensation of natural stone without losing control.
Detail is the guiding thread of this new family: in the align-ment of veins, in the continuity between pieces, and in the way light moves uninterrupted across the surface. Visually, Eterna offers a serene and restrained interpretation of marble: refined, balanced, and timeless surfaces that naturally complement architecture.
NESTA: A GREAT PLANE OF LIGHT. The Nesta collection extends seamlessly from floor to walls. Natural light reflects off the white background of the reinterpreted Calacatta marble, creating a spacious, precise, and serene atmosphere. Grey and golden veins traverse the space like tension lines that organize the composition, balancing movement and calm.

In the living room, large polished slabs amplify the light streaming through the windows, providing controlled brightness. In the bedroom, the glossy texture contrasts with natural wood, generating a dialogue between the mineral and the organic. Its technical performance is as important as its appearance. The finishes—matte, polished, silk (silky matte), and honed—offer different levels of interaction with light, allowing the result to be tailored to each space. Nesta represents constructed light: marble transformed into a technical plane where every joint, vein, and reflection is part of the spatial design.
RAFFAELLO: MATTER AS BALANCE. In the kitchen clad with Raffaello, both on the floor and part of the wall, the ceramic integrates with wood and concrete in a restrained composition. The ivory tones of Avorio di Segesta marble translate into a warm and uniform surface, where the golden veining appears as a subtle trace. The result is a balanced and luminous atmosphere, ideal for projects seeking calm and continuity.

In the dining room, the barely visible texture of the material becomes a neutral backdrop. Natural light is distributed evenly across the surface, creating visual comfort that enhances the perception of space. The ceramic acts as a silent support, allowing architecture, furniture, and greenery to coexist under a unified tone.
The detail of each piece reveals precise graphic work: the veining blends naturally, without repetitions or harsh contrasts. Raffaello represents the essential surface within Eterna: the one
that unifies, balances, and gives coherence to the whole. It is the material that does not seek protagonism, but visual stability—a foundation upon which the rest of the project is built.

The design team were given full creative license, using the client’s former home as inspiration and then reinterpreting the space to suit the contemporary architecture of Battersea Power Station. CONTEMPORARY SWISS CHALET
DYNAMIC VERNACULAR: A RETREAT, REWORKED
More than a ski chalet – this is a family haven in the mountains. The Red Thread for the project was ‘Dynamic Vernacular’, an expression of the clients’ love for clean lines, contemporary design as well as their response for local heritage and materials.
Our longstanding clients tasked us with the wholesale refurbishment of a newly purchased chalet in Klosters in early 2020. The snag? Due to Covid we wouldn’t be able to see the chalet or undertake any site visits at all. Everything would be conducted remotely: client workshops, liaison with the site architect, even material workshops. Despite this challenging set of circumstances the outcome was a huge success. The architecture of the chalet is pure Klosters, founded on the wooden constructions of the Walser who moved from Oberwallis in the 13th century. The vernacular language combines wood, plaster and natural stone. The outlook from every window tells a different seasonal story and became part of the red thread of inviting the outside in.
The original layout from the developer allowed for a third bedroom / TV snug with ensuite. We saw the opportunity to increase the open-plan area in the kitchen and dining room and give more living space to the family. We worked on several options for an openplan kitchen and dining room that allowed the family to cook and entertain while still enjoying the views from the main part of the ground floor. The kitchen was designed together with Bulthaup, a kitchen maker
that the clients have used in their London and countryside homes. The sleek lines of the wall units blend into the architecture; the glass induction hob into the vals stone of the island. A Brora down-draught ensures an extractor-free ceiling. The furniture and lighting scheme for the living room reinterprets the traditional chalet ingredients of leather, wool and velvet with a decidedly contemporary language. Pieces from Ceccotti Collezioni, Flexform and Porta Romana sit on a modern cow-hide rug from Limited Edition, under the gentle gaze of a ceiling-mounted pendant from American atelier Allied Maker.

Existing London clients paid us the huge compliment of asking us to design their chalet over the strange period that was Covid. IT’S SHOW TIME! Last year at Spring Fair at the NEC we launched a newly designed stand and a higher number of new products than ever before. This year with the launch of Design at Spring Fair, which will be a dedicated new destination for the world of interiors, architecture, and
hospitality, which we will be part of, it represents a significant evolution of the show. Retail has become more immersive, as have hospitality and all aspects of interiors, and it’s great to see trade exhibitions acknowledging
that. Launching at Spring Fair this year will be a continuation of natural materials but with some unexpected twists and turns. Of note are some more playful artworks and sculptural pieces, and we are bringing back chrome, but not as you’d expect.

SURFACE DESIGN SHOW 2026 WILL BRING ‘MATERIAL EVOLUTION’ TO LONDON’S BUSINESS DESIGN CENTRE FROM 3-5 FEBRUARY SDS26 will display the very best in materials and surfaces for architects and designers to explore and interact with for the duration of the show.
This years’ theme is ‘Material Evolution’ and will stress a rethinking of newness and how the industry can make the shift from waste to worth. The theme will encourage exhibitors and visitors alike to celebrate thoughtful design and redefine what it means to be new whilst championing circular systems, material transparency and inventive reuse. The 2026 edition promises to be bigger and better than ever with returning features including Surface Spotlight, Stone Tapestry, Innovation Gallery, Green Grads and the Surface Design Awards.
SDS has also announced a new partnership with the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) serving as a host partner for two of RIBA’s most significant annual events. This year’s exhibitors will be showcasing the finest in material innovation with surfaces ranging from hand crafted ceramic tiles to stunning marble walls, bespoke wood veneers and everything inbetween. The Green Grads will once again fill the innovation gallery with their experimental projects that push the boundaries of design and materiality. Last year we saw tennis balls, breadcrumbs and hand spun textiles to name but a few. This year we will continue to see the best of what Barbara Chandler’s Green Grads have to show.
Studio Justine Fox will be managing the curation of the designer hub for SDS26, using its expertise in applied colour psychology, colour insights and colour ergonomics to make the space one of the show’s stand out areas. Andra Munro will be returning to the next edition of the show, bringing her expertise in porcelain and craft to the BDC, last year she created a beautiful entrance to show featuring an intricate wall, for 2026 Andra will be creating something even bigger. The show will also host a range of speaker sessions covering a range of topics from forecasting trends to designing for neurodiversity. SDS26 is a must in the design calendar to explore all creative things within the material and surface world.

CHARLOTTE TAYLOR FOR MARAZZI. UNDER THE SKIN AN IMAGINED HOME To celebrate its 90th anniversary, Marazzi entrusted the evocative and sophisticated vision of British designer Charlotte Taylor with the creation of a special project: an imaginary house, suspended between reality and suggestion, where ceramic surfaces become protagonists of an intimate yet universal architectural narrative. Through spaces that evoke Mediterranean atmospheres and interiors that blend functionality and poetry, Taylor interprets Marazzi’s collections with an authorial and sensitive gaze. In this conversation, Charlotte Taylor
recounts the creative process that guided the birth of her “imagined home” for Marazzi: a project that intertwines material and narrative, shaping spaces that speak of intimacy, memory, and imagination. How did you design this imagined home? First, I carefully explored Marazzi’s collections and examined the different shapes, types, and tones available, imagining how they would look in various spaces. It wasn’t difficult – the products are very versatile and work beautifully together. In most cases, the process started with a single object and expanded to the rest of the room and then the entire house, a
cohesive space where architecture and furnishings integrate perfectly. How did you choose the Marazzi tiles to use? I’d say it was a natural process, because the tiles cover a rich range of colors – from black to green, brown to terracotta – but at the same time, they all fall within a palette of earthy tones and share a connection to nature. Some rooms play with warm colors, others with cooler tones, yet I believe that walking through this house you’d perceive a sense of continuity: the reference to the natural environment unites all the spaces.

Let’s move to the next room. The living room is a clean and essential space, but playful touches and design icons are not missing. To play with reflections, the base couldn’t be too light. At the center, the conversation pit in Vero Quercia recalls Italian design from the ’70s and ’80s. The central table, instead, is in Crogiolo Terramater Cotto. For the walls, I chose a slightly darker tone than other rooms, because I imagined a living room to be enjoyed mainly in the evening, a place to relax and listen to music. And the kitchen?
Which room did you start with? The studio, which is practically unfurnished. Just a large central table – the absolute protagonist – that can serve various purposes, and along one side, a bookshelf that doesn’t take up too much space. I imagined fairly neutral walls with a matte finish to allow light to
fill the space as much as possible and create a sort of blank canvas. Studios can become quite chaotic, crowded with objects. For the floor, I chose Crogiolo ArtCraft Argilla: the inspiration comes from those old artist studios scattered across southern Europe, with white walls and terracotta tiles everywhere. Wonderful.
It has something traditional and original at the same time. The central hood and horseshoe-shaped counter may recall kitchens from long ago, but the black tiles from the Crogiolo Lume collection immediately transport us to a more contemporary setting. The texture of the tiles is fantastic – they convey a truly unique sense of warmth. For the floor, I chose Mystone Limestone Sand to balance the dark tones of the rest of the

kitchen with a light color. For the counter and shelves, I opted for the large-format stone-effect porcelain slabs. What choices did you make for the bedroom? I incorporated Crogiolo Terramater Cotto tiles into the headboard, and then extended them to the shelf, desk, and floor. On the wall opposite the bed, there’s a bench made with the same material, which harmoniously runs through the architecture of the room. Among all the rooms in the house, this is where I used the most textured tiles, because it’s a sacred, intimate, calm space. And the bathroom? There’s a compact bathtub, covered in tiles, that connects smoothly to the shower. For the color, the obvious choice would have been blue. But these green rectangular tiles – part of the Crogiolo Lume
collection – struck me instantly with their beauty, their extraordinary tones and shades. Looking at the landscape outside, I thought that the green, bouncing off the tiles and water, would create a truly stunning
environment. The glossy finish I chose for the tiles aims to highlight light play and reflections, while also conveying a sense of hygiene and cleanliness.

Okay, now let’s go outside. The exterior is inspired by a series of places I visited in Italy, particularly among the hills of Tuscany. With descending steps and large open spaces, I wanted to evoke a Mediterranean atmosphere and a certain way of living. Through the pool, the house’s architecture blends with the landscape, and the boundaries between inside and outside become blurred. From the bench in Mystone Travertino20 Navona – a thick porcelain stoneware for outdoor use – you move to the stairs and then descend to the water, all in a harmonious, seamless transition.
Who do you imagine lives in this house? Probably an architect or an art collector. I always tend to create fictional characters when designing imagined homes. Imagination plays a crucial role when I have to transform a space – whether it really exists or only in my mind – into something tangible, connected to the human dimension.
I think human design is about understanding who the people are that will inhabit a space, and making that space structured enough to ensure the comfort they desire, and flexible enough to allow them to make it their own. Spaces should take shape, adapt, and grow through the people who live in them.

CASE STUDY: A LUXURIOUS SANCTUARY THE BRIEF As homeowners of a luxurious London property, the clients for this project wanted a complete redesign of their existing bathroom, with a focus on brightness, calm, and timeless elegance. The challenge was to create a space that combined functionality with refined aesthetics, suitable for both daily use and as a sanctuary to relax in. Key for the design, was combining a well-lit space with luxurious materials in a sophisticated colour palette coupled with bespoke storage solutions to achieve a clutter-free aesthetic.
THE DESIGN SOLUTION Calling on their expertise in designing luxurious and practical spaces, the Kallums Bathrooms team approached the project with a strategy rooted in precision, balance, and functionality. The design focused on three key principles: enhancing light, maintaining spatial harmony, and ensuring enduring quality. With space often at a premium in London homes when it comes to the bathroom, Kallums Bathrooms design team needed to ensure all key elements of a well-planned bathroom were included in the design. This has been achieved by using sleek furniture and accessories, a barely-there shower enclosure and mirrors to reflect the light and increase the feeling of space. Selected for its hardwearing properties, a duo of sophisticated porcelains have been used for surfaces and flooring, while luxurious fittings and accessories provide a warm metallic contrast without overpowering the neutral palette. In the absence of any natural light, recessed ceiling down lights have been combined with accent lighting to create a practical and atmospheric space - whatever the time of day. Bespoke vanity units were installed to ensure there is plenty of storage across the space while thoughtful positioning of sanitary ware, the generous shower area and stylish, contemporary bath ensure the bathroom combines style and practical use.

A PRIVATE VILLA IN KITZBÜHEL:
A DESIGN GEM IN FRONT OF A SUBLIME ALPINE BACKDROP A dialogue between old and new: the Italian studio Storagemilano has extensively renovated a historic villa in the famous winter sports resort of Kitzbühel.
Lavishly restored and ingeniously furnished, the interior combines traditional Alpine architecture with a minimalist, modernist style. In the bathrooms, Tara from Dornbracht complements the design approach.
FAMILIARITY AND DISCREET LUXURY From the outset, Storagemilano was keen to preserve as much of the original building as possible. Accordingly, striking architectural features such as the rustic wooden ceiling beams have been retained. In the staircase and in parts of the hallway, they now encounter surprising, contemporary elements, such as shimmering dark gold wall panelling. The extravagant choice suggests that carefully selected materials played a key role in the interior design: This included the use of oak, natural stone, and numerous fine fabrics, as well as metals such as brass and pickled steel. Clear-cut geometries and fine finishes, submerged in a warm colour palette, create a sense of familiarity and discreet luxury.
EXCLUSIVELY CREATED DESIGNER PIECES
The living area combines traditional Alpine architecture with a minimalist, modernist style: The design of every piece of furniture expressly followed the owners’ ideas.
A central aspect of the project was the collaboration with renowned design brands: The design of the furniture and accessories exclusively followed the owners’ ideas. Special attention was paid to quality, craftsmanship, and the little details. The interior thus reflects the personality and sense of style of the owners in a variety of ways – from colour compositions to selected works of art that accentuate the interior design time and again. Equally influential for the overall aesthetic are the light-coloured, terrazzo marble floor and elaborate lighting design: Carefully composed of direct and indirect lighting, this creates a calming atmosphere and

deliberately highlights the design elements – or can even catch the eye itself, with expressive lamps.
CLEAR-CUT LINES AND GEOMETRIES IN THE BATHROOMS The bathrooms also feature openness and minimalism: Clearcut lines and geometries shape the rooms, as does the generous use of natural stone and dark glass. Dornbracht’s classic Tara design consistently pursues this aesthetic: With its archetypal form, the fitting is in perfect harmony with its surroundings, sometimes harmonising with the veined natural stone, and sometimes with the square countertop basin. The Brushed Durabrass (23kt Gold) finish also emphasises the subtle elegance of the different bathroom architectures – and helps to turn the bathrooms into exquisite safe havens.

Originally built in 1878, the complex of three connected houses had been abandoned for decades before being brought back to life by Tanya Design Montenegro, led by interior designer Tanya Pustinja Nikolić, in collaboration with local architects, structural engineers, and craftsmen. While the exterior remained shaped by inherited stonework and the surrounding landscape, the interior was entirely reimagined through Tanya’s
design approach. Every decision was rooted in respect for place and history, balanced with a refined, contemporary sensibility. Hand-forged shutters and preserved masonry were paired with modern insertions, such as structural glass flooring that draws natural light into thickwalled spaces. Olive-green kitchen fronts echo the trees outside, reinforcing a palette drawn directly from the environment.
