EDITOR’S CHOICE eWeeding Roller Powered by Zasso Full electric and very sustainable The eWeeding Roller is entirely electric, thus boasting an extremely favourable environmental profile. The unit operates on rechargeable batteries that are easily replaceable. It is particularly suitable for surfaces such as sidewalks, footpaths, pedestrian areas, parking lots or cemeteries. The eWeeding Roller has a working width of 60cm and features a side-shift function. This side-shift capability allows the working module to be moved to the left or right, enabling weed treatment nearby kerbs. In the autumn of 2023, the eWeeding Roller underwent extensive testing against various types of weeds, on different surfaces, and under

various conditions, yielding a considerable amount of information about the expected results as well as the adjustments needed to be made to be fully prepared for practical use. In early 2024, the pilot program continued, and from the summer of 2024, the eWeeding Roller will officially make its debut in the Benelux region. Currently the eWeeding Roller is available for any professional in green management who wants to contibute to a sustainable weedcontrol management environment.

The eWeeding Trolley is a tracked device consisting of a generator, transformers and a treatment lance that allows for the targeted treatment of any unwanted plant. As a result, treatment with the eWeeding Trolley is highly selective.

Research has shown that the eWeeding Trolley has no adverse effects on soil life, and common weeds such as nettles, grasses, and local broad-leaved plants re-establish themselves due to the reduction in the size of Japanese Knotweed.

Success guaranteed The eWeeding Trolley has been in use since 2019 for spot treatment of invasive species, such as Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed, or unwanted weeds in plant beds.

Based on the experience gained, existing hotspots of invasive species can be brought under control in just a few years. Difficult weeds in plant beds can be effectively addressed without the need to completely renew the entire bed.

Flooring The easiest, but not the cheapest way to create a seamless flow is by having the same flooring inside as you do in your outside space.

GARDEN DESIGN Whether that’s matching porcelain tiles, or wood flooring in the same shade and texture that blends into the deck, the same tones, colour and finish and ideally, the same product, will naturally draw your eye out into the garden space and create one big seamless area. Porcelain tiles are the obvious choice, as they work well both inside and out, creating a beautiful, seamless flow from one space to another.

Soft furnishing Open plan spaces can tend to feel a little cold and minimal. While this might be the look you’re going for, in the Winter, you’ll probably want to create something a little warmer and inviting. Matching your interior and exterior cushions and blankets in the same tones will again create a blended feel to the space. With firepits and heaters being a big part of indooroutdoor living, you can stay cosy and warm while feeling like you’re still part of the indoor space. Blankets will add softness, and cushions will make outdoor seating comfy and inviting.

Accessories Another way to blend your flow is with matching accessories. If you opt for large lanterns or candle holders around your fireplace, match these with an outdoor lantern outside. Grouping various sizes of the same style can add interest, texture and depth to the space. Candles will also bring warmth, light and fragrance. That fragrance can also help hold everything together, bringing the space together as one. Don’t over clutter, but do add personality. Fresh flowers, which you have in your garden in vases on your kitchen island and coffee table, will bring the outside in.

Year round living In the UK, we’re not blessed with year-round sunshine and warmth, so looking into a covered outdoor area will maximise the amount of time you’ll use the space. Follow us @ludmagazine

Having a pergola may look attractive, but without a roof, it can feel more decorative than usable. Covered areas that offer flexibility with shutters, which can open to let the light in or have one area which is covered and one open, so you can enjoy the sunshine when it hits, offer maximum flexibility. Glazed extensions also offer the best of both worlds, an outdoor feel with the comfort of the indoors. To create the perfect flow, match your internal pendants to those you use on your outside covered area. Use furniture in the same tones but in materials that will cope with being outside. And don’t forget built-in storage or blanket boxes to store away your soft furnishings when you’re inside.

Outdoor cooking Outdoor kitchens have risen in popularity in the last few years, and they work perfectly with an indooroutdoor flow. Open the bi-folds, step outside onto the terrace, and while your guests sit in your outdoor living space, you can still chat and interact while cooking rather than having to pop back and forth to your kitchen, even though it’s just a few steps away. If a full outdoor kitchen is out of reach, opting for an outdoor cooking station with a small prep space means you can do the bulk of the work inside but still finish everything outside with your guests. Bringing all these elements together will help you create a home that feels connected, considered and truly designed for the way we live today. Whether you’re dreaming of a full indoor-outdoor transformation or simply looking to enhance the flow you already have, the key is consistency, comfort and clever planning. By blending materials, finishes and zones across both spaces, you’ll create a home that feels bigger, brighter and more inviting all year round. Native Trees “Some of the United Kingdom’s most valued trees are struggling to keep pace with climate change and increasing extreme weather.” Weather patterns are changing, and Britain experiences frequent hotter, drier summers. Some of Britain’s native trees find the changing weather conditions challenging, and they are not growing to their full potential. It is becoming clearer to many experts that planting just native trees is no longer sustainable. Worldwide weather patterns seem to be changing, and it is time to look beyond planting purely native species, and focus on including trees that accept warmer and drier

conditions and are less prone to tree pest and disease issues.

The Best Trees for Climate Change There is, perhaps surprisingly, a good choice when considering which are the best trees for climate change. Our Managing Director, Alastair Beddall, makes his recommendations and suggests that planting design should include: • Both native and non-native species • Species that tolerate high UV levels, sustained heat, urban stress and drought • Shade trees to give cover and protection from sun for animals, humans and shade loving understorey

THE HIDDEN RISK IN DECKING SPECIFICATION:

WHY SLIP RESISTANCE MUST BECOME A NON-NEGOTIABLE

Across the UK, decking has become a defining feature of contemporary landscape architecture—integrating seamlessly into parks, waterfronts, education settings, hospitality venues and public realm schemes. It is often valued for its aesthetics, sustainability credentials and ability to create warm, inviting outdoor spaces. Yet behind the visual appeal lies a persistent and underacknowledged problem: the industry continues to accept decking systems whose real-world slip resistance has not been proven to be safe in the conditions in which they will actually be used. Slips and falls remain one of the most common causes of major injury in public and workplace environments. Rainfall, shade, biological growth, moisture retention and high footfall all increase the likelihood of incidents, and these

are precisely the conditions in which landscape decking is routinely installed. Despite this, many specifications still rely on generic “anti-slip” claims, dry-condition test data, or ratings that have limited relevance to UK public-realm use. For a profession that emphasises evidence-based design, this gap between expectation and reality is increasingly difficult to justify.

What Safe Performance Should Mean The preferred method in the UK for assessing pedestrian slip resistance is the pendulum test, which provides a Pendulum Test Value (PTV). For surfaces exposed to wet conditions— common across almost all outdoor landscape applications—a wet PTV of 36 or above is typically understood to indicate low slip risk. In many situations, especially high-traffic or high-vulnerability environments,

a more conservative threshold is appropriate. However, too many specifications are underpinned by incomplete or inappropriate data. R-ratings generated from ramp tests continue to appear in marketing literature, yet these tests were designed for industrial environments with controlled footwear and do not reliably represent typical footwear or public use. Likewise, drycondition data is often emphasised even though the surface will be wet for much of the year. In some cases, suppliers simply offer no meaningful test information at all. Without verified wet-pendulum results from an accredited testing body, specifiers are effectively being asked to take safety on trust.

DECKING Landscape and urban design professionals increasingly operate under heightened expectations regarding safety, inclusivity and accountability. When a decking surface becomes slippery after the first winter, users do not distinguish between product, contractor and designer; they simply recognise a failure of the environment to meet their needs. For clients in education, leisure, local government and healthcare—where vulnerable users are common—such failures can have significant implications. From a legal and compliance perspective, designers and asset owners are expected to demonstrate that they have reduced foreseeable risks “as low as reasonably practicable.” If a surface is known to be at risk of becoming slippery when wet, and more robust alternatives exist, it becomes difficult to defend the specification of a system without verifiable performance evidence. In short, the absence of reliable test data becomes a liability.

Climatic and Demographic Pressures Climate patterns are shifting, bringing more prolonged damp conditions, more intense rainfall and greater variability in seasonal contaminants such as algae, leaf litter and pollution films. These changes make real-world slip performance more critical than ever. At the same time, public spaces are being designed for increasingly diverse and ageing user groups. Older people, children and individuals with mobility impairments are more susceptible to slips and more likely to suffer serious consequences. A decking surface that becomes hazardous in predictable conditions is incompatible with modern expectations of accessibility and inclusive design.

Performance-Led Specification: A More Rigorous Approach To achieve robust and predictable safety outcomes, landscape professionals may wish to adopt a more structured approach to decking specification:

1. Set a clear minimum performance requirement. For wet-exposed environments, a wet PTV of at least 36 should be considered the baseline, with higher targets applied in areas of heavy use, contamination or increased vulnerability. 2. Require independent, up-to-date test reports. These should be conducted in accordance with current recognised standards, clearly stating test conditions, direction of travel and the sliders used. 3. Consider contamination profiles. Decks beneath trees, adjacent to water, shaded by structures or subject to organic debris will not behave like clean, evenly exposed test samples. Systems should be evaluated for their ability to maintain performance in realistic conditions, not just ideal ones.

4. Evaluate the longevity of slip resistance. Some systems rely on surface textures that polish, wear or clog over time. Others incorporate abrasive elements designed to offer longer-term stability. Understanding how a system performs after years of exposure is as important as knowing how it performs when new. 5. Align maintenance expectations with client capability. Slip resistance should not depend on unrealistic cleaning regimes. If specialised or frequent maintenance is required, this must be part of the design dialogue.

How Product Choice Influences Outcomes Materials and manufacturing methods have a profound effect on slip behaviour. Timber decking incorporating high-friction inserts can deliver consistently high wet PTV values when engineered

correctly. High-density bamboo and certain composite boards can also perform well, but only when slip resistance is a central design consideration rather than a latestage enhancement. The market contains products that vary widely in performance, making rigorous evaluation essential.

The profession has an opportunity to lead by insisting on verified, transparent and independently tested slip-resistance data as a standard requirement. Doing so will not constrain creativity; rather, it will ensure that beautiful public spaces remain safe, inclusive and reliable long after installation.

A Call for Professional Consistency Landscape architecture has matured significantly in its approach to sustainability, drainage, lighting, accessibility and biodiversity. Slip resistance deserves the same level of professional discipline. Designers are not expected to accept vague structural claims, unverified environmental data or unsupported product lifespan assertions—yet the industry continues to tolerate imprecise information on a parameter that directly affects user safety.

Yet every visually striking pool or tranquil spa is built on a foundation of elements that make it an enjoyable long-term investment for homeowners. One such example is the surface surrounding the area. Whilst sometimes easy to overlook, the base beneath our feet in pool and spa areas can determine how the area feels, performs and endures. Increasingly, designers are recognising that the space around the water is just as important as the water itself. At Oltco, enquiries related to poolside and spa-side installations have grown significantly in recent

years, reflecting a broader shift in how homeowners, designers and commercial operators approach outdoor wellness environments. The rise of at-home spa culture, the expansion of boutique leisure facilities and the evolution of outdoor entertaining have all contributed to this increased focus on surfacing. As expectations grow, so does the need for materials that are safe, aesthetically versatile and capable of withstanding constant exposure to moisture and fluctuating temperatures. One of the most pressing considerations in any wet leisure environment is safety. The ability of a surface to manage water is another essential component of its performance. While water belongs in the pool, it certainly does not belong sitting on the surrounding surface. Standing water creates slip hazards, encourages algae growth and can gradually degrade many traditional materials. It can also contribute to freeze–thaw damage in colder months, causing surfaces to crack, or lift. Resin-bound systems offer a practical and elegant solution to this challenge. Their porous structure allows water to drain freely through the surface and into the engineered sub-base below. This means puddles don’t have the opportunity to form. It also minimises the need for intrusive drainage channels or slot

Comfort is often underestimated in discussions about outdoor surfacing, but in spaces where people are expected to be barefoot, it becomes a defining factor. Harsh, uneven or overly textured surfaces can detract from the experience, particularly in commercial spas where comfort must be consistent and dependable. Another consideration with traditional pool tiles is their tendency to crack, creating sharp edges that can easily injure users. A resin-bound finish provides a smooth, gentle and seamless alternative. Its fine, rounded aggregates provide a surface that is pleasant to walk on, even when temperatures fluctuate. The absence of joints or grout lines enhances this comfort, ensuring there are no edges or ridges to interrupt the underfoot feel. For designers aiming to create a premium, spa-like atmosphere, whether in a boutique hotel, a wellness retreat or a private garden, this level of comfort contributes directly to the sense of luxury and relaxation. This pursuit of comfort naturally ties into the broader aesthetic ambitions of the modern landscape. Today’s outdoor leisure spaces are increasingly designed as extensions of the home or commercial interior, with cohesive finishes, complementary materials and harmonious colour palettes. Resin bound solutions offer exceptional design flexibility, allowing architects and landscapers to tailor the surface to the character of the environment. This is because they cannot be applied in the rain, when residual water is present in the joints, or when rainfall is expected within the next 24 hours. As the paving jointing is generally one of the final construction steps before handover, these constraints frequently postpone completion and delay opening the new or refurbished paved areas to service. However, under commercial pressure, these environmental limitations are sometimes overlooked, and contractors may be pressured to maintain programme deadlines and budgets. While this may be expedient at the time, it introduces

significant issues and risks that will only become evident later. Premature joint deterioration, breakdown and failure – Cementbased paving jointing materials rely on a controlled water-to-cement (w:c) ratio to achieve their designed performance and durability. Any residual water within the joints, or additional water from rainfall during or shortly after installation, strongly disrupts and compromises this ratio. The result is then a material with increased porosity, reduced strengths, and shrinkage cracking. Crucially, these defects are not immediately visible, and all may continue to appear to be well for completion and handover, including the retained samples on larger projects, which are cast into moulds on site i.e., they are under controlled Follow us @ludmagazine

The reduced performance of the joint material only becomes apparent after some time and dependent on the severity of exposure in service conditions, often after just one or two winters, when the compromised joints begin to visibly deteriorate and erode, crack, and then fully breakdown. Cleaning with high pressure jetwashing and mechanical street cleaners in public areas, accelerates this deterioration, with the mode of progressive breakdown being the same as for non-compromised joints, but far, far quicker. The end result is more costly repair and repointing works being required, and by following the same process this can be a cycle of continuous deterioration and additional cost. A well proven, non-weatherdependent solution – Fortunately, the good news is that ALL these issues, for ALL types of paving, in ALL types of areas, can be solved using the ‘State-of-the-Art’ paving jointing, GftK vdw 850 plus from NCC Streetscape, who also provide full technical and practical support to do this throughout the UK, from the design office, right though to completion on site. THE TROUBLE WITH TANNINS To remove marks caused by leaves and nearby timber structures, we recommend application of ECOPROTEC Intensive Cleaner, diluted 1:3 with warm water, onto the stain. If the staining is particularly prominent, the surface can be agitated with a scrubbing brush or black pad straight after application. The treatment should then be left to react for 5-10 minutes, with more solution added if it starts to dry out. The tiles should be agitated again and the residue wiped away with a sponge or mop. Finally, the tiles should be rinsed with clean water. In extreme cases, neat solution can be used and the same method applied.

Made up of polyphenol compounds, tannins are naturally found in plants and trees and, whilst they can cause tile issues, they offer natural protection in lots of different ways.

THE ATHENAEUM HOTEL & RESIDENCES UNVEILS REVITALISED LIVING WALL FOLLOWING £80,000 REINVESTMENT The Athenaeum Hotel & Residences has carried out an £80,000 reinvestment to replant and refresh its iconic Living Wall, reinforcing the hotel’s long-standing commitment to sustainability, biodiversity and green urban design. The refurbishment was undertaken in partnership with Daniel Bell Vertical Garden, specialists in living wall installations and maintenance. Spanning an impressive 329 square metres, The Athenaeum’s Living Wall has been a landmark feature for nearly twenty years. The wall houses a variety of plants equivalent to 16.5 medium-sized trees, delivering notable environmental benefits. Each year, the wall removes an estimated 757kg of CO2 and produces 559kg of oxygen, supporting air purification in one of London’s busiest districts. The recent refresh retains many of the original plantings, still thriving two decades on, whilst introducing complementary varieties selected for biodiversity and to enrich the texture and colours of the wall. New species include Viburnum tinus, Erigeron ‘Lavender Lady’, Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’, Ligustrum vicaryi, and Origanum vulgare, each chosen for their strong year-round structure, extended flowering periods, ecological value, and suitability to London’s changing urban climate. The wall provides nectar for pollinators, berries for small birds, and an evergreen cover that adds depth and colour. More than 1,000 Narcissus bulbs were also added to create vibrant spring displays, adding to the wall’s seasonal rhythm.

HIBERNIAN FC INVESTS IN REDEXIM VERTI-RAKE TO ENHANCE PITCH QUALITY

Maintaining a top-class playing surface at Easter Road Stadium is no small task, but for Steven Thomas, Head Groundsman at Hibernian Football Club, having the right machinery is making all the difference. One of the latest additions to his maintenance fleet is the Redexim Verti-Rake – a tool he says is already proving invaluable. “We’ve had the Verti-Rake for a few months now,” Steven explained. “For us, it was about maintaining the highest standard of turf possible. We were looking for an attachment that could rake the surface, keep our hybrid stitch clean, and clear out organic matter. Having looked at a few options, we felt the Verti-Rake was the best choice. It’s simple to use, easy to set up, and does exactly what we need.”

The Redexim Verti-Rake is designed for fast and effective thatch removal. Its spring tines work between the grass blades to loosen thatch, while adjustable tine angles allow operators to alter the aggression of the rake. Working depth can also be fine-tuned for perfect results. As well as helping to clean surfaces, the Verti-Rake can be used to create a seed bed ahead of overseeding. Steven and his assistant Ronan use the rake regularly. “We tend to use it after every game,” he said. “It’s great for raking out organic matter and keeping the hybrid stitch upright. But it’s also weather dependent – we’ll assess the conditions and decide if it’s needed. What’s been clear so far is that every time we’ve used it, it’s easy to set up, easy to manoeuvre, and leaves the surface clean.”

He adds that the machine also has benefits for playability. “Earlier in the season, we felt the surface was maybe too dense for ball movement and traction. Once we put the rake through, followed by a rotary cut to tidy debris, you’d almost not know we’d been on the pitch. It leaves minimal disruption and keeps the surface playing really well.” Ease of operation is a standout feature for Steven. “For me, the key feature is how easy it is to set up. It’s literally just a case of attaching it to the three-point linkage on the tractor and using the side levers to adjust the depth. It’s quick, simple, and effective.” Steven also believes it is an exciting time for the Redexim brand right now. “I think they’re making a bit of a Follow us @ludmagazine

When I first joined, there were just two of us and limited resources. The progression since then has been massive. People rightly give credit

It features three main entrances (south and two east) and additional entrances on the north and west, all connected to the path network for convenient access to playgrounds and recreation zones. Benches, waste bins, and informational stands are strategically placed. Lawns, trees, and shrubs have been restored or newly planted, and a new lighting system has been installed. Children’s and recreational areas are diverse: the northern section has a climbing playground and an automated restroom; a labyrinthstyle play area is nearby. The central area includes a fountain, a relaxation zone with pergolas, and educational plantings. The southern area offers an interactive play zone, swings, hammocks, artificial mounds, and inground trampolines. On the western slope, a climbing wall with a rubber surface provides additional physical activities for children.

SIS PITCHES PREPARES ESTADIO BBVA AS SPOTLIGHT FALLS ON MEXICO

Preparations ahead of the next World Cup are in full swing, with less than a year until the tournament commences on June 11, 2026.

surface improvements, however, the management team sought a full refit of the pitch in early 2025 to prepare it for the crucial months ahead.

The first to be hosted across three nations, 48 teams from six confederations will travel across North and Central America over the course of a month, visiting 16 venues to decide the winner. It’s arguably the most logistically complex football tournament ever held, laying the foundations for a similarly ambitious centenary edition in 2030.

This is where SIS Pitches entered the frame.

Estadio BBVA will be one of three Mexican stadiums used in 2026. Having opened in 2015 as the new home to Liga MX team CF Monterrey, the ground and much of its surrounding infrastructure already met FIFA guidelines. Recognising the need for playing

Elite in 10 weeks The client brief was simple: deliver a pitch fit for World Cup standards and specification, playable within 10 weeks.

Working together, these components not only promote ideal root zone growth conditions but also allow stadiums to manage a packed calendar of fixtures and events without impacting the quality of their playing surface. This was especially important for Estadio BBVA, with a packed summer of events and a full domestic football season planned before and after the World Cup.

The planning and process This short window was particularly challenging given the changes agreed through early consultation. Estadio BBVA’s old playing surface was to be fully excavated to make way for a series of advanced drainage and aeration systems developed by SIS. Once installed, the top layer would then be fitted with a hard-wearing stitched hybrid pitch.

As with any large project of this kind, the key to successful delivery lies in good preparation. SIS and Estadio BBVA agreed work would commence in May 2025, once CF Monterrey’s season concluded. From the early conversations held in January, this gave the SIS team only a few months to plan, design and Follow us @ludmagazine

SPORTS & PLAY procure everything needed to deliver the new pitch in time. Much like the ’26 World Cup, the project demanded solid logistics management. Everything had to be ready to go in May – equipment, materials and teams – if the 10week turnaround was to remain achievable. In preparation, SIS had two containers shipped from Europe to Mexico in advance of work commencing. Excavation took just over two weeks. Once the area had been fully cleared down to the formation level, trenches were dug for irrigation pipework to be laid. Among the world’s most advanced playing surface Estadio BBVA represents an important step forward for SIS, as the first major stadium to install three of our solutions at a single project. The first was a new version of SIS Air – a turf aeration and rainwater management system designed to promote stronger, healthier grass. For Monterrey, the system was upgraded with enhanced moisture and

temperature sensors, allowing the site team to adapt to local conditions in Mexico, where natural grass typically struggles to thrive. This upgrade was designed to work alongside SIS Aqua, an advanced pitch irrigation system with 35 popup units that can be individually controlled. This creates an even distribution of water across the pitch, delivering a uniform playing surface. Finally – and key to meeting the 10-week turnaround – the stadium was fitted with SIS Hybrid. The installation of hybrid grass can be completed in as little as three days using SIS Pitches’ leading X-Gen machines, which were launched globally in 2025.

Since completion, SIS has been on site to hand over to the Estadio BBVA site team, advising on regular maintenance and scheduling. Initial feedback has been positive. “Transforming Estadio BBVA into a World Cup-ready venue in just 10 weeks was a milestone for SIS. By integrating SIS Air, SIS Aqua and our turf, we’ve delivered a surface that meets the highest standards of play and durability. It’s a proud moment – not just for our team, but for what this project represents in terms of innovation and collaboration.”

All set for the coupe du monde SIS’s planning and logistics has paid off, with the stadium now set for one of the world’s most-watched sporting events. Delivery was completed by 24 July, meeting the 10-week deadline. The result is an elite-level football pitch now capable of performing to the highest standards all year round, supported by a suite of tools that optimise play regardless of local conditions.

Just a year later, STIHL introduced its first electric chainsaw, developed for cutting felled trees, a two-person machine that would transform timber processing. By 1929, STIHL had patented the first petrol-powered design, with European exports soon to follow. Less than half a decade later, in 1932, STIHL would set new standards for efficiency and durability with its patented three-lug saw.

Bombing raids would severely damage STIHL’s Stuttgart plant, prompting production to move to Waiblingen, a location that remains the company’s headquarters today. In the post-war years, STIHL rebuilt with renewed strength, setting the stage for decades of growth. During this period, STIHL also released its KS 43 ‘power chainsaw’ innovation, made from lightweight magnesium die-cast material.

Hydrowick is one of the most efficient and effective drainage systems on the market, utilising a patented rope system to ‘wick’ away excess moisture. Laid at 2m centres, the installation process is also far less invasive than most other systems – maximising results and returning surfaces to play within 24 hours. Generating very little spoil was one of the key advantages for Grant, with Parkstone designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest meaning the club is highly constrained on where and how it can move and store soil. The club now plans to extend the Hydrowick programme to a further three or four fairways, with installations proposed for late 2026 into early 2027. “Cameron and the whole team at Djuke are an absolute pleasure to work with. Everything from initial quotation through to installation was quick, polite, tidy and professional and the end result ticks every box for us” he concludes.
