LIVING ROOFS, LASTING IMPACT: HOW IRRIGATION SUPPORTS SUSTAINABLE GREEN ROOF DESIGN FOR EVERY APPLICATION

The Rise of Green Roofs in Urban Design

Green roofs are an increasingly common feature if not an essential part of the urban landscape, delivering benefits that range from biodiversity gains to improved thermal performance. These systems fall into two broad categories: extensive roofs, typically lowmaintenance and intended for ecological value, and intensive green roofs which are deeper, landscaped environments, often designed for human use.

Design Complexity and Irrigation Needs

Projects like the landmark new development in King’s Cross are showcasing just how multifunctional these spaces can be. However, their long-term success depends on more than just the planting selection. Irrigation plays a vital role, particularly where deeper substrates and diverse species require consistent moisture to establish and thrive.

When Irrigation Is Essential

At Waterscapes, we work closely with design teams to determine whether irrigation is necessary, and if so, the most effective way

to integrate it. As a general rule, intensive green roofs should always be irrigated, as should any roof designed for seasonal colour, pollinator planting, or public access. Even extensive roofs can benefit from irrigation during periods of prolonged drought, to maintain biodiversity and reduce fire risk.

System Design and Sustainability Integration

We deploy both surface and subsurface dripline systems, depending on planting schemes, substrate depths and maintenance access. Systems are pressure-compensated and typically paired with smart controllers to optimise water use. Where feasible, a green roof should incorporate rainwater harvesting or SuDS integration — aligning with sustainability targets and reducing reliance on potable water.

Fire Resilience and Climate Adaptation

Fire resilience is becoming a more prominent consideration, particularly in dense urban zones where dry rooftop vegetation could pose a risk. Correctly designed irrigation significantly reduces this threat, ensuring green roofs remain safe and compliant while supporting biodiversity throughout the seasons.

GRO Code and Best Practice Compliance

It’s essential to refer to the GRO (Green Roof Code), which provides comprehensive industry guidance on the design, installation, and maintenance of green roofs. This includes critical detail on substrate depths, fire performance classifications, biodiversity requirements, and the need for adequate irrigation in intensive systems. Adhering to the GRO

Code not only ensures compliance with current best practice but also future-proofs green roofs against environmental stressors and evolving regulatory expectations.

An Ecological Investment, Not an Optional Extra

With urban environments under pressure to deliver both green and blue infrastructure, green roofs offer a rare dual benefit; softening hardscapes while contributing to drainage and climate adaptation. But they are not maintenance-free. Irrigation isn’t optional on these projects it’s an ecological safeguard and a fire prevention strategy.

HOW TO SCARIFY LAWNS: WHEN, WHY AND THE BEST EQUIPMENT TO USE

Lawn scarifying is the process of removing thatch and moss - the layer of dead grass, roots, and debris that builds up on your lawn. Over time, this layer blocks water, air, and nutrients from reaching the soil and roots, leading to poor lawn health.

Using a scarifier helps aerate the soil, stimulate new grass growth, and improve overall lawn drainage and resilience.

When should you scarify your lawn?

The best time to scarify a lawn is during periods of active growth:

• Spring (April to May)

• Autumn (September to October)

• Avoid scarifying in summer (especially during droughts) or winter when grass is dormant

How to scarify

Follow these steps to get the best results when scarifying your lawn:

• Mow the grass short

• Set up your scarifier

• Scarify in two directions

• Adjust blade depth as needed

• Collect debris

What to do after scarifying

Your lawn might look rough - but it will recover quickly if you follow up with the right care:

• Rake thoroughly and remove all debris

• Overseed and apply grass seed to bare patches for even regrowth

• Top dress by spreading a thin layer of compost or topsoil

• Water well and keep the lawn moist to support new seed growth

• Fertilise by applying a balanced lawn feed to speed up recovery

Best scarifying equipment

Manual rakes can work for small patches, but for best results, use a scarifier.

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PORCELAIN AND SANDSTONE PAVING?

CHECK OUT OUR HANDY TABLE BELOW FOR THE KEY COMPARISONS

Durability

Water resistance

Environmental impact

Maintenance

Installation

Less porous, scratch-resistant, and more durable

More water-resistant, with a water absorption rate of less than 0.5%

Created from natural, raw materials with minimal waste and no harmful additional materials

Low-maintenance and naturally stain-resistant. Only a quick wipe is required to remove moisture

Slabs require special equipment for cutting, and the extra adhesive at the base requires specialist techniques for installation

Consistent, printed surface that emulates natural stone

Durable but softer than porcelain and more prone to scratches

More porous, with a water absorption rate of around 1.7%

Natural, biodegradable, with no harmful additional materials

Easy to maintain, can handle being washed with a pressure washer Needs to be resealed every one or two years

Easy to cut and install. It can be used to make complex designs

Natural, each slab has a unique pattern and wears over time

Which paving option is more durable?

If durability is your main concern, both porcelain and sandstone will serve you well, but porcelain does have an edge.

Porcelain paving is made from compressed clay with an image printed onto it to resemble natural stone. The slabs are fired at a high temperature, producing a tough, resilient material with low moisture absorption. Porcelain is a great option if you use your outdoor space heavily for entertaining.

Sandstone is created naturally over thousands of years. It’s tough and

Sandstone

thick, ideal for patios and driveways. However, porcelain has the edge in terms of durability.

Which is easier to maintain, porcelain or sandstone?

Thanks to its resistance to moss, mould, and stains, porcelain is easy to maintain. It only requires the occasional wipe clean to keep it looking fresh. Sandstone, while not high-maintenance by any means, requires extra care. It needs to be sealed every 1-2 years and is more susceptible to staining.

Is porcelain paving slippery when wet?

This is a common concern for porcelain paving, but the short answer is no! Porcelain paving is not slippery. It is more slip-resistant than other materials, thanks to its textured surface. The tiny pores on the surface provide a good grip, even when wet.

Of course, no paving material is completely slip-proof, but porcelain is classified as R11 on the R scale.

The R rating is determined using a ramp (hence, R rating). In the test, the material being assessed is placed on a ramp that is gradually raised. Oil is applied to the ramp, and someone walks up in boots. The measurement is taken at the point they slip.

Does sandstone paving require sealing?

Yes, sandstone will perform best when sealed to protect it from water damage, staining, and discolouration, and prevent algae and mould growth.

Sandstone is a porous material, meaning that if it isn’t sealed, it can absorb moisture, dirt, and other substances that can affect its appearance and cause it to deteriorate faster. Using a sealant like Azpects EASYSeal Sandstone Sealer and Enhancer will enhance the appearance of sandstone without giving it a false, shiny finish. It will also protect against water and oil, ensuring your paving stays at its best for many years.

Is porcelain paving more expensive than sandstone?

Yes, porcelain paving is more expensive than sandstone due to the additional steps required in its manufacturing process. Sandstone is cheaper as it’s more readily available. However, if cost is a big factor in your decision, looking at the long-term investment is important. Porcelain has higher upfront costs but is more

R Rating

durable and easier to maintain. Sandstone is cheaper initially but requires regular sealing and is slightly less durable than porcelain.

Which paving option is better for a modern or traditional garden?

Porcelain and sandstone paving works brilliantly in any style of garden. Typically, porcelain is the more popular choice for a modern look, offering a sleek, contemporary finish. Sandstone tends to be better suited to more traditional outdoor spaces. Their more natural and rustic appearance complements gardens with a focus on greenery and flowers.

Whether you choose porcelain or sandstone for your outdoor space, you will get durable and stylish paving that will keep your garden looking great for years. At Beatson’s, we have an extensive selection of porcelain and sandstone paving stones so you can find the perfect fit for your project.

INTEGRATING LUXURY SWIMMING POOLS INTO LANDSCAPE MASTERPLANS

In high-end residential design, the swimming pool has evolved. Today, luxury pools are emerging as architectural centrepieces, integrated from the earliest stages of planning and becoming defining features of beautiful landscape design projects.

This shift reflects a broader trend in how homeowners are reimagining their outdoor spaces. No longer an afterthought, the pool is now a focal point that anchors the entire design narrative of a property. From infinity edges that blur into the horizon to sculptural forms that echo the geometry of the home, pools are being designed to

harmonise with both architecture and nature.

“Clients are increasingly viewing their pools as an extension of their lifestyle and aesthetic,” says Alex Kemsley, Managing Director of Compass Pools by Waterstream.

“We’re seeing pools integrated into the master plan from day one, with architects, landscape designers and pool specialists collaborating to create seamless transitions between indoor and outdoor living.”

This early integration allows for a more holistic approach to design. Pools are now being positioned to maximise views, complement

garden layouts and align with the home’s spatial flow. In some cases, they even serve as visual anchors, drawing the eye through courtyards, terraces and open-plan interiors.

Smart design features are also elevating the luxury pool experience. Advances in materials and technology mean that pools can now be customised with everything from the finish and lighting to automated covers and energy-efficient heating systems. These elements not only enhance functionality but also contribute to the overall aesthetic.

“Design innovation is key,” adds Alex Kemsley. “We’re incorporating

features like stainless steel waterfalls and Nova® colours, which both enhance the pool’s movement and light. These elements transform the pool into a multi-sensory experience, one that’s as much about relaxation and entertainment as it is about visual impact.”

The landscaping around the pool is equally important. Native planting schemes, architectural hardscaping and water features are being used to create immersive environments that feel both luxurious and natural.

Designers are paying close attention to texture, colour and scale, ensuring that every element contributes to a cohesive and inviting outdoor retreat.

In urban settings, where space is at a premium, compact plunge pools and smaller models with countercurrent training systems are gaining popularity. These designs prioritise elegance, space and efficiency, often incorporating clever landscaping, reflective surfaces and clever lighting to enhance the sense of space.

Ultimately, the luxury pool is no longer just a place to swim, it’s a statement of design intent. It reflects the homeowner’s values, aspirations and connection to their environment. As Alex Kemsley notes, “A well-designed pool doesn’t just sit in the landscape, it shapes it.”

With this growing emphasis on integration, innovation and aesthetics, the luxury pool is poised to remain a defining feature of contemporary landscape design for years to come.

There’s just something about trees...

EVERGREEN SCREENING TREES IN STOCK IN THE UK

Practicality Brown have a range of the best quality trees in stock in their Buckinghamshire nursery. This includes evergreen screening trees, both as standards and pleached forms, as well as elegant specimen deciduous trees.

All the stock is containerised and ready to deliver to projects over the coming weeks.

Creating Privacy with Trees

Privacy in gardens can be created using trees to hide or screen out an undesirable view; they can also be used to draw the eye to a specific feature. Trees grown for this purpose often have a clear stem up to fence panel height around 1.8-2m with a full bushy canopy above, forming a good screen above the fence line. This type of screening is particularly useful if the garden is overlooked by neighbouring properties or to retain lower-level exposure to an attractive wall or area.

Their top five screening trees are:

1. Ilex aquifolium ‘Nellie R Stevens’ is a popular holly tree that has an abundance of red berries in the autumn and winter.

2 Ilex castaneifolia or Sweet Chestnut Holly is a medium tree with a distinctively pyramidal shaped crown, with bright red berries in the autumn.

3. Magnolia grandiflora ‘Gallisoniensis’ is a show-stopping evergreen with large beautiful white flowers in the summer, which can be up to 25 cm in diameter.

4. Photinia x fraseri ‘Red Robin’ has attractive bright red new foliage that turns green with age.

5. Prunus laurocerasus Novita (Cherry or Common Laurel) is a versatile, fast growing screening evergreen that is perfect for screening.

Traditionally, the best time to plant semimature stock is during the autumn/winter, whether its evergreen or deciduous. However, our hedges and trees have been carefully curated and maintained to be planted anytime of the year, even during the growing months.

Our Practical Instant Hedge™ has been produced to ensure that it is easy to handle and plant all year round, with no transplant shock. We have designed this instant hedging range to give you plenty of choice, depending on your garden style, local soil, and weather conditions. It’s also ideal for use as a partition or screening to divide your garden into sections.

All of this means, any time of year is the perfect time to plant Practical Instant Hedge™.

We also specialise in screening trees, and

we currently have over 800 in stock at our nursery in Iver, Bucks. We have such trees available with a clear stem up to fence panel height of around 1.8-2m with a full bushy canopy, or pleached (trained to a narrow canopy) or fully feathered trees. These trees are containerised, meaning that they are currently growing in large pots, and are ready to plant and thrive in your garden.

Choosing a product from Practicality Brown means that you save time! We have grown and produced these large hedges and tree, so you can appreciate the mature effect from the moment its planted.

Outdoor screening problems solved in an instant

Whether you need outdoor screening to provide privacy in a small garden, divide a larger space into different zones or simply slow down the wind to protect your plants, a living hedge is the perfect solution.

For generations, hedges have been used by farmers, gardeners and developers to create secure barriers, manipulate microclimates, add structure, direct foot traffic, and play with the concept of ‘hide and reveal.’

With Elveden Instant Hedge, you can achieve all of this and more in a very short amount of time. Best of all, it’s a sustainable choice.

Could instant hedging be the most sustainable outdoor screening of all?

In a world where timber, corten steel and composite dominate garden screening choices, due to their quick installation, a traditional hedge offers a refreshing alternative.

Elveden have spent decades perfecting a hedging system that doesn’t rely on cutting down trees or introducing man-made products into the environment. We don’t even use unnecessary packaging.

Elveden Instant Hedge appeals to a wide range of people, from garden designers and land managers, to developers and home gardeners, because it’s natural, beautiful, durable and most importantly, instant. There is no waiting for the right planting season, no faffing about planting and protecting whips and no long wait for the plants to grow.

This is a fully mature, well knitted hedging product that can be speedily installed by two people and a mechanical lifting device.

Instant privacy, instant visual appeal, instant wildlife value... outdoor screening problems solved in an instant.

The value of an instant hedge

It’s difficult to put a value on a living outdoor screen. Whilst you can easily compare the prices of various fencing solutions, they offer far fewer benefits than hedging.

Consider these questions: Does a fence rustle gently in the breeze? Does it absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen? Does it create habitat for innumerable species? Can it help cool the air around it or filter pollutants? Does it have roots that

stabilise the soil and improve its structure? Can a fence bend and flex in strong winds? Can you easily adjust its height?

Elveden Instant Hedge provides more design flexibility than almost any other landscaping feature, which only adds to its inherent value.

Elveden Instant Hedge is part of a large, privately owned estate on the Norfolk Suffolk border. The well-drained soil here supports a variety of activities including food production, forestry and leisure. For over two centuries, this historic estate has been known for it’s adaptability and diversification with considerable investment having been put into efficient soil management, wildlife conservation and water-wise agriculture.

In the 1990s innovative employees were supported by the Estate owners in their idea for growing and harvesting, strong, fully knitted hedges that would not only support wildlife during their production, but also provide garden designers and landscapers with instant screening solutions.

Today, Elveden welcomes landscape professionals to tour the hedging nurseries, gain a deep understanding of the growing, harvesting and installation processes and be inspired by the diverse range of hedging species available. We even offer a bespoke growing service should you need large quantities, a specific species mix or a particular size and width of hedge.

LEADING LANDSCAPER SAYS 2025 ‘IS YEAR OF THE ACCESSIBLE GARDEN’

GARETH WILSON, A MULTI AWARD-WINNING HARD LANDSCAPING CONSULTANT WHO HAS WORKED ON RHS FLOWER SHOW GARDENS SINCE 2012,

SAYS IT’S VITAL

For this year’s Flower Show at Wentworth Woodhouse, he helped create a garden designed to enrich the senses – using products donated by essential materials provider Breedon.

The RHS project, which won Gold medals for Best in Show and Best Construction, reflects a growing industry trend of organisations carrying out ‘sensory audits’.

2025 is fast becoming the year of the accessible garden, a leading landscaping consultant has said – after a sensory-rich garden he created for the RHS Flower Show at Wentworth Woodhouse took home a trio of awards.

THAT GARDENS ARE MADE MORE INCLUSIVE

Gareth Wilson worked alongside renowned horticultural designer Paul Hervey-Brookes to construct a garden in partnership with the RNIB that invited people without visual impairments to experience the world through the eyes of someone with sight loss.

Described as “thought provoking and challenging”, the garden explored how texture, form, sound and scent help to create an immersive and emotional journey. The team used products from essential materials provider Breedon, including Welsh Slate hard landscaping material from the famous Penrhyn Quarry, prized for its tactile qualities and durability, and Breedon Golden

Amber Gravel - the only self-binding gravel to hold a Royal Warrant, known for both its performance and accessibility characteristics.

“Being able to use all of our senses is something we’ve taken for granted, but I think people are starting to realise the difficulties people can face,” said Wilson. “Whether it’s the crunch of gravel, the texture of slate, or the sound of trees in the wind, every part of this garden was designed to be felt, not just seen.”

When creating gardens that are accessible to everyone, Wilson says the choice of product is vital: “It’s all about using materials which people can really experience – whether

that’s through touch, smell, sound or sight – for example for those who’re visually impaired, we want them to walk over the surface and feel something different.

“Landscapers need to think about using materials that are unique and allow visually impaired people to detect the type of surface underfoot. Welsh Slate might be smoother, but its subtle texture and feel make it ideal for sensory spaces – safe, tactile, and full of character.

“For an area to be more accessible, landscapers might consider using a self-binding gravel like Breedon Golden Amber gravel – which allows people to manoeuvre wheelchairs more effectively.”

Wilson continues “We’re seeing more organisations doing sensory audits on public and commercial spaces. It’s about designing for everyonefrom gradients and path widths to the surface material.”

He adds that there’s lots to consider when assessing whether a garden is accessible: “Different disabilities will have different criteria they have to meet. For people with wheelchairs, for example, you’ll have to consider the width of the path, the steepness of the gradient, and even the type of hard landscaping products being used.

Wilson says it’s not just accessibility that’s shaping garden design in 2025. More landscapers are increasingly prioritising the use of Britishsourced materials. He said: “Britain produces so many great quality products now, and that’s becoming the starting point when building. Think about where your materials are coming from – and then create a design around that.”

Visitors to stand 29 at GroundsFest 2025 can look forward to an exciting showcase from DSV UK, as the company launches two brand-new perennial ryegrass cultivars: Flanell and Eurogala.

Exclusively available in EuroGrass mixtures from 2026, these highperformance varieties will be on display at the show, where attendees can view samples and learn more about their standout characteristics.

Both cultivars feature in the 2025 BSPB Turfgrass Seed Booklet, with Flanell ranked #2 in the prestigious S1 sports table – just behind Euromagic, another leading DSV variety. Eurogala, meanwhile, sits just outside the top ten but stands out for its versatility across multiple turf categories, making it a promising all-rounder.

“We’ve been at the top of the table before, but to come straight in at number one and number two – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime moment,” says Sam Horner of DSV UK. “It reflects the quality of our breeding programme and the strength of the DSV portfolio.”

Strong genetic colour is another defining feature, with Flanell particularly noted for its dark summer greenness – a sought-after trait for stadiums and televised sports. “We believe we can offer something genetically darker, delivering both performance and a more camera-friendly appearance,” adds Sam.

URBAN ART WITH HEART:

HIMACS POWERS STUART MELROSE AND KEV MUNDAY’S COLOURFUL TRIBUTE TO READING

How do you celebrate the spirit of a town in a high-profile work of public art? This was the challenge presented to designer Stuart Melrose and artist Kev Munday when they were commissioned to create a stunning backlit mural made from HIMACS solid surface for the new £850million Station Hill development in Reading.

A key feature of a £1.5 million series of artworks, devised by cultural placemaking agency Futurecity, and commissioned and funded by Lincoln MGT JV, the mural is part of a public realm art trail across the two acres linking the station with the town centre, and is intended to both reflect and enhance the area’s cultural legacy.

Having local connections, plus experience of the kind of material that could both capture the essence of the design and withstand the demands of an outdoor, hightraffic public installation, Melrose and Munday began the process by working with an advisory committee that included historians, local art groups and school children.

“The experience was both inspiring and highly enjoyable,” says Stuart, “and it soon became clear there

was fantastic scope for embodying Reading’s heritage and personality in a really vibrant, fun and distinctive way. Bringing artist Kev Munday on board was a no-brainer, his joyful, graffiti style work is unmistakable and absolutely ideal for this project.”

Welcoming arrivals to Reading from the train station, the mural marks an important pedestrian gateway to the town and frames the new underpass while being visible from a ‘pocket park’ opposite – the perfect vantage point from which to enjoy this spectacular installation. Considering its location, the mural needed to be formed of a material that could go the distance in terms of withstanding weather, a constant stream of passersby, and any damage it might incur.

“HIMACS was the obvious choice of materials from which to fabricate the mural,” confirms Stuart, “It has incredible design flexibility combined with the requisite toughness, it’s compatible with all the complex lighting and electronics, plus it’s non-porous, resistant and easy to clean, but can also be repaired, if necessary. The choice of Opal from the Lucent collection was the ideal way to get the eye-catching yet diffuse translucency we were after.”

Paying artistic homage to a vibrant town, with help from its children

Aptly named “Royals, Residents & a Rock Festival”, the project acknowledges the area’s cultural heritage including famous faces associated with the town, such as Kate Winslet, Ricky Gervais, Kate Middleton (now HRH The Princess of Wales) and Marianne Faithfull, alongside local figures such as businesswoman Tutu Melaku, scientist Dr Ethelwynn Trewavas and table tennis champion Matthew

Syed. Reading landmarks such as the Hexagon Theatre, the Oracle and ONE Station Hill – and of course the town’s globally renowned rock festival – are also depicted.

It’s clear by the delighted and fascinated reactions of passersby, day or night, that the installation is a popular and captivating success, which works beautifully as an urban regeneration project to engage townspeople and visitors alike – a worthy landmark for this important transport and economic hub and gateway to the west of England.

“This hugely impressive public space is now effectively the town’s new front door. The creation of an attractive green space and accompanying public square, complete with seating, sculptures and artwork, will quickly become a destination in its own right,” says Councillor Liz Terry, leader of Reading Borough Council of the Station Hill project.

Lee Fearnhead, director of construction for UK & Europe at Lincoln Property Company, and on behalf of the Lincoln MGT JV, adds:

“This newly landscaped area was previously a derelict, inaccessible site for the best part of 20 years. We have transformed it into a series of attractive open spaces which everyone in Reading can enjoy.”

How the mural was made:

“The installation is a kind of giant, complicated light box,” explains Stuart Melrose. “The outer shell and the black lines that stencil the front of the piece and represent Kev’s original artwork are made of powder coated aluminium. The real magic in the piece from a design perspective – which also makes it the first of its kind at this scale globally – is the way the rich and even LED colours fill the space between these lines, and glow from pastel tones to deeper shades as it gets darker outside.”

To achieve this effect an extensive, programmable system for over 100,000 individually addressable LEDs was devised, together with something Stuart describes as a “cookie-cutter” style channel to guide the light, and crucially, choosing “the best diffuser we could find.” This came in the form of HIMACS, a material capable of diffusing the illumination to optimal effect, spreading the light evenly and allowing for clarity of colour.

“What’s more,” as Stuart explains, “being the front-facing surface to an outdoor, 50m-long mural, it needed to be structurally strong enough and durable enough to withstand life in a public space and an extremely high traffic area. But we also needed

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

something that could be repaired should any damage, accidental or deliberate, occur. Ultimately, there was only one solution to make our vision possible and that was classleading, tough, translucent HIMACS.”

To span the extensive wall that frames the new underpass, ramp and steps, 54 sheets of HIMACS and the ‘lightbox’ frame were fabricated and fitted by façade specialists AGS System Ltd, with lighting supplied by Earlsmann and programmed by Lee Savage.

“The design demanded the HIMACS panels to be milled to precise dimensions,” adds Stuart, “So they could be put together like a giant puzzle that follows the aluminium lines at the front.” It was also essential that the panels could be removed for access to the electronics, while having expansion gaps between them.

Kev Munday, described by The Daily Mail as “the new Banksy”, is delighted with the result, and seeing his artwork come alive at such scale and luminosity. The collaboration with the schoolchildren resulted in a series of charming drawings which could then be adapted to his signature style. The black stencil lines needed to be drawn in such a way that every line and curve touches another, so that the “puzzle pieces” of the HIMACS elements could be fitted neatly into each aperture of the interconnected frame.

The Lighting programme also allows for animated effects, from the eyes of the characters often giving a cheeky wink here and there, to full scale colour changes and movements in which special effects such as fireworks or wording can move across the mural. In fact, Stuart even managed to surprise and

delight his wife by having the mural declare a “Happy Valentine’s Day” when he gave her a sneak preview of the work!

Stuart Melrose bio:

Multifaceted design studio Stuart Melrose has worked with major global brands and won several awards, while gaining a large following on social media and the attention of the international design press. Stuart Melrose has been commissioned for special pieces at exhibitions such Grand Designs Live, The Ideal Home of the Future, the Chelsea Flower show and George Clark’s Amazing Spaces.

He has worked with architects Zaha Hadid and Foster + Partners plus clients such as Disney, Microsoft, BAA, The Discovery Chanel, Reading Borough Council, Hampshire County council, and many others. He has designed and produced items from

large sculptures and public art through to world record-breaking lighting installations and a widely acclaimed furniture collection. Pushing the boundaries with materials and technology, Stuart enjoys an experimental and cuttingedge approach to design.

Kev Munday bio:

Kev Munday crafts vibrant, utopian worlds and invites viewers to step inside and explore. Inspired by the energy of everyday life and people, his work celebrates the beauty in the ordinary, transforming it into something extraordinary. His art speaks to all ages and his signature style of bold black outlines and vivid block colours creates an electrifying visual impact. Perhaps best known for his iconic crowd paintings, his work is a vibrant tribute to diversity and community.

Munday’s journey began in the early 2000s as a teenage graffiti artist and these accessible and engaging roots remain integral to his art today, whether adorning gallery walls or revitalising public spaces. Kev has collaborated with brands including IKEA and Nescafe Azera and his work has been exhibited in The Royal Academy of Arts, The Arnolfini and The Hayward Gallery. His work also extends beyond traditional art spaces and is often studied in schools – reinforcing his belief that art is not just to be observed but to be interacted with, explored and brought to life.

TREE RELOCATION: PRESERVING NATURE’S BEAUTY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

Since 1963, Civic Trees have been at the forefront of tree relocation throughout the UK, from importing the very first Vermeer tree spade into Europe, to designing and constructing the Newman Frame which is now used worldwide.

Civic Trees are always looking to pioneer new techniques that aid the relocation of trees.

Tree relocation is a concept that involves uprooting trees from one location and transplanting them to another. With current events surrounding environmental issues, relocating trees is even more important now than ever before. By relocating trees instead of cutting them down, we can preserve nature’s beauty while also promoting sustainability.

We are proud of our reputation for efficient, cost effective and reliable tree relocation throughout the UK. You can be confident that through our exemplary commitment to staff

training and development, our work meets the highest technical and safety standards.

We believe that a tree is only as good as the way it is handled, planted and maintained. Ground preparation and aftercare are crucial to the successful establishment of the tree.

Before we start the tree move process we arrange a site visit with our client and assess the tree’s health, size, and root system. We also create a site specific risk assessment to ensure the whole operation is carried out safely.

Our team of experts use specialised equipment to excavate the tree with minimal damage to its root structure. The tree is then carefully transported to its new location,

where it is replanted and nurtured to ensure its successful adaptation.

Our experienced team will know and understand the benefits and methods of loading and unloading a tree using the correct lifting techniques in order not to stress the tree or root ball. This is imperative for the longevity of the tree’s life.

In conclusion, tree relocation is an environmentally friendly method that allows us to preserve nature’s beauty while supporting urban growth. By carefully uprooting and relocating trees, we can maintain the valuable benefits they provide to our communities.

Civic Trees prides itself in paying great attention to the health and well being of our clients most prized asset “THE TREE”.

NEW IMAGES REVEAL SCULPTURAL DESIGN FOR ALPERTON BRIDGE

Design team unveil new pedestrian and cycle bridge design to boost connectivity and celebrate Brent’s industrial heritage.

New images of the planned pedestrian and cycle bridge across the Grand Union Canal in Alperton have been unveiled, as work continues to improve accessibility and connectivity in the Brent community, as part of a wider £5 million regeneration plan.

Images released by the project’s design team, AECOM, the world’s trusted infrastructure consultants, show more clearly how the bridge will look once complete. The sculptural design will provide a

more direct east-west pedestrian and cycle network in and around Alperton, connecting the Grand Union development to the towpath on the southwestern side of the canal, the Abbey Estate and Park Royal employment hub.

The bridge features a gently curving structure with slender steel columns that blend with surrounding tree trunks and vegetation. The 4m-wide deck is flanked by steel girders and topped with 1.5m-high repeating steel fins, creating a light and kinetic feel that appears to shift in the sunlight.

Fabricated from low-maintenance weathering steel, the bridge will

have a distinctive rust-like, earthy appearance commemorating the site’s industrial past. A ‘halfthrough’ deck design enables efficient structural performance with minimum bridge depth, reducing ramp lengths to enhance accessibility for all users and minimise environmental impact.

The design embraces the canal’s unique location, offering a journey through natural habitat and wildlife areas. The bridge will afford canopylevel views and panoramic vistas across the Grand Union Canal as it opens over the water.

The bridge will provide safer offroad walking and cycling options,

reduce journey times and promote healthier, more active lifestyles by encouraging recreational use of the canal space, connecting 3,350 homes.

Erik Behrens, Architecture Director, AECOM, said: “We wanted to design a bridge that embraces its distinct location and blends fluidly into its surroundings. One that would offer a sculptural yet natural experience that takes people on a journey through habitat and wildlife spaces, with tree canopy views and vistas across the Grand Union Canal as the bridge opens up over the water. The raw finish of the weathering steel adds authenticity and depth to this modern design, commemorating the site’s industrial past while creating a light and kinetic feel.”

Jack Summerhayes, Project Manager AECOM, added: “Structurally, the ‘half-through’ deck provides an efficient solution that reduces bridge depth and ramp lengths, making it more accessible for all users while minimising impact on the habitat. Designing within such a constrained and environmentally sensitive site brings unique challenges, but also opportunities

to deliver innovative, sustainable solutions that respect the area’s natural and historical features.

“Our integrated team is drawing on expertise across engineering, architecture, landscape and ecology to ensure the final design is not only functional and durable, but also enhances the local environment and supports active travel for years to come. With the exception of the foundations, all components will be fabricated offsite and lifted into place, ensuring a swift installation with minimal disruption to the environment and canal operations.”

Yaz Aboubakar, Brent Council, said: “The project is out to public consultation and the community is also invited to help choose a name for the new bridge. The feedback of the community will help to develop the plans ahead of submitting a planning application later this year”.

The work is being delivered through Perfect Circle, a unique partnership between AECOM, Pick Everard, Gleeds and via the SCAPE consultancy framework.

GREEN-TECH SUPPORTS

URBAN TREE PITS

AT ONE OF DUBLIN’S LATEST DESTINATION VENUES WITH THEIR TREEPARKER® SYSTEM

In the 1950s, the area around Wilton Park was the most bohemian community in the city. It sits around the newly renovated, delightful one-acre park, sitting alongside the Grand Canal. The work included planting 30,000 new shrubs and 48 new trees, restoring the Victorian fountain, and adding new seating. It is open seven days a week from 6.30am to 9 pm.

The development of the inspiring office, social, and residential building involved years of preparation and consultation with city planners and the local communities. Every facet of the design, materials, and amenity space has been driven by the desire to create a space that people will use and love. Wilton Park is the only workplace in the city with its own park, and as if to rubber-stamp its credentials, three major companies, LinkedIn, Stripe, and EY have chosen the location for their new headquarters.

One outstanding feature is a new public square with a mature cherry tree and an interactive water feature. Mary Lavin Place is the first public place in Ireland to be named after a female writer, celebrating the area’s literary connections.

Green-tech involvement

Maylim are specialists in hard and soft landscaping, paving projects, and civil engineering work, and Wilton Park was their inaugural venture into Dublin. They have worked with Green-tech for nearly ten years across various projects, so when the TreeParker® tree pit support system was suggested, they were keen to see it, especially as it had recently been used to good effect just down the road at Athlone a few months previously.

Launched as a like-for-like alternative to the tree pit support systems already on the market, TreeParker® works in precisely the same way – supporting the paving above, vehicular or pedestrian, whilst protecting the soft, organic topsoil below from compaction. It does, however, have several distinct advantages.

The heavy-duty, reinforced legs are available in six height options from the factory: 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200, and 1500mm. This gives a previously unheard-of flexibility with depth options, and more importantly, without the need to stack two units high, saving installation time and money. It also enables the units, by having rounded legs rather than side walls, to easily straddle or work around service pipes and lines.

The new TreeParker® system comprises rigid, modular units made from reinforced, recycled polypropylene. These units do a vital job in enabling the ground above a tree pit to be trafficked, supporting the paving above (up to 56t/m2). This means that rather than having to use a fast-draining and low organic structural tree soil, we can use a soft, friable, organic topsoil, ideal for successful tree establishment. Made from highly

rigid, 100% recycled polypropylene, the units still provide 95% of their volume for rooting space.

There were various sized tree pits across the site, up to 28m2, and longer trenches up to 39m long, allowing for around 20 new trees to be planted along the front and rear aspects of the main building. Supplying product to the site in a timely manner was no problem thanks to Green-tech’s fully-stocked warehouse in Ireland, serving both Northern Ireland and Eire.

The feedback on TreeParker® has been complimentary, focusing mainly on the speed and simplicity of installation. There were several utility lines on site, and the absence of intrusive side walls meant that installation was a lot more straightforward than it might otherwise have been.

Alasdair Innes, Green-tech Specification Advisor, summarises, “This is a stunning development, and it was fantastic to have TreeParker® chosen as the preferred tree pit support system. Having a warehouse in Ireland is also a major benefit for us to be able to cover the increasing number of projects coming through for Northern Ireland and Eire.”

BOULDER PARK: A

3D CONCRETE-PRINTED PLAYGROUND

Boulder Park, a 13,000m2 community park in Ji’nan, incorporates large boulders - a natural material symbolizing eternity - as the central design element. These boulders integrate with the park’s functional and experiential activities. Boulders placed over a sandpit are transformed into climbing and resting play structures; stones in the shallow creek can become part of the water play installation. Additionally, a massive rock cave adventure space is constructed using advanced 3D-printed concrete technology.

Designed by XISUI Design, it integrates children’s play areas with water features and natural landscapes, offering a space for intergenerational interaction and community engagement.

Design background

Boulder Park occupies the central area of Yunwan Garden in Ji’nan. This 13,000m2 space functions as a comprehensive community park combining a children’s playground, shallow stream water activities, family interaction, and leisure. According to the style characteristics and functionality, the park is divided into multiple areas:

• All-Age Boulder Playground

• Water Garden

• Forest Garden

• Stone Garden

• Flower Garden

XISUI Design was responsible for the design of the children’s activity areas, including the All-Age Boulder Playground, Water Garden, and Forest Garden.

All-Age Boulder Playground and Forest Garden

Water Garden

Located to the west of the All-Age Boulder Playground, the Water Garden features an outdoor water play area with babbling shallow streams, blending naturally into the surrounding landscape. The design team at XISUI Design focused

In terms of interactive experiences, the All-Age Boulder Playground and Forest Garden feature a variety of children’s activity facilities such as swings, slides, seesaws, trampolines, rocking horses, merry-go-rounds, climbing tunnels, speaking tubes, climbing ropes, and more. These facilities are integrated into the natural landscape, formed by large stones and concrete caves. The design provides children with fun, while also helping them develop limb strength. Beyond physical growth, these activities promote the development of the brain’s ability to recognize nature, balance, and other essential skills.

on creating interactive water play experiences suitable for all ages. Children can engage with fountains, feel the flow of water, and explore jumping springs, winding creeks, and a water turntable - each designed to engage children and stimulate curiosity. Water pumps and pressure devices add to the experience, providing opportunities for exploration and learning. This interactive environment fosters a connection between children and nature, allowing them to engage with water and feel its gentle power firsthand.

Main

installations

The standout feature of the park’s installations is its use of advanced construction technology - 3D concrete printing. This additive manufacturing method produces monolithic structures with complex, free-form curved shapes based on digital models. Such shapes are challenging to achieve through traditional formwork.

3D concrete printing uses a computer-controlled robotic arm that precisely extrudes liquid or

GREEN & BLUE

semi-solid concrete, which then solidifies, building the structure layer by layer. The essence combines digital design and material science, offering unprecedented freedom and complexity in spatial design and construction. The resulting layered rock textures create distinctive surface textures that visually resemble the natural rock formations of boulders and caves. Moreover, its advantage of forming organic shapes at once improves both the spatial accuracy and user experience.

• 3D concrete printing monolithic molding

Digitally-controlled 3D printing enables monolithic molding of complex organic shapes. This not only significantly improves shape accuracy, effectively avoiding inevitable errors in conventional craftsmanship, but also reduces reliance on manual skills, showcasing the close fusion of technology and art.

• Layered canyon

The unique layered rock texture of the 3D printing technique

complements the surrounding natural stone landscape, meeting current functional needs while maintaining an atmosphere of exploration and adventure. Children playing among the “boulders” seem to be traversing real canyons. Meanwhile, the subtle curves of the surface naturally create steps, handrails, slides, and seating elements, harmonizing function with the form of the installation.

• Safety and fun

Safety and enjoyment are paramount in children’s play areas. All 3D-printed landscape installations are designed with smooth edges and rounded corners to ensure that there are no sharp or hazardous points that could cause injuries. The cave-like scenes, with slides, tunnels, and speaking tubes, combine the garden environment with children’s play activities in terms of form and function.

“Landscape structures and installations are often small in scale, with low load requirements and simple, clear functional needs.

GREEN & BLUE INFRASTRUCTURE

In the application of 3D-printed concrete technology, compared to architecture, landscape projects may have even more diverse usage scenarios,” explains Hu Yihao, Lead Designer. “Although the current 3D concrete materials still face a series of challenges, such as uneven stress distribution and relatively simple reinforcement methods, the 3D printing materials used in Boulder Park have an average strength of 50MPA, surpassing the traditional C40 concrete strength standard.”

“This technical specification is more than sufficient to meet the structural needs of most landscape installations and structures,” adds Mr. Yihao. “In landscape projects, outdoor durability, the ability to achieve organic shapes, ease of construction and installation, and cost savings in labor are the primary considerations. 3D printing technology, with its significant

advantages in these aspects, has become an ideal choice for this purpose.”

Conclusion

The park shows how new technology - 3D concrete printing - can enhance public spaces, while respecting local culture and the environment. By integrating 3D-printed concrete elements with natural features, it offers a space for play, exploration, and connection with nature. This project exemplifies how 3D-printed concrete elements harmonize with their surroundings, providing both functional and aesthetic value to the community.

TERRAM DELIVERS SUSTAINABLE CAR PARK UPGRADE AT HISTORIC

HERITAGE SITE

A major refurbishment of the car parking facilities at a renowned historic estate in Stratford-uponAvon has been successfully completed using Terram Bodpave™ 40, a high-strength, sustainable surface solution made from 100% recycled materials.

As part of broader visitor enhancement works carried out in 2022, the Grade-listed Tudor estate, set within 180 acres of landscaped deer park, required a significant upgrade to its previously unsurfaced car parks.

The project aimed to deliver a durable, all-weather parking

surface capable of supporting increasing visitor numbers while remaining sensitive to the estate’s historic character and surrounding environment.

Before the refurbishment, the estate’s gravel car parks were increasingly unable to cope with the rising visitor traffic and seasonal weather conditions. During wetter months, surface erosion, standing water and reduced parking capacity created both operational inefficiencies and safety concerns, particularly during peak times.

To address these issues, the project team sought a permeable, high-

performance surface solution that could stabilise the gravel, resist rutting and lateral movement, and withstand frequent vehicle traffic — all while preserving the natural aesthetic of the parkland setting.

Following consultation with the project engineers, Terram Bodpave™ 40 was selected as the preferred solution. This gravelfilled system offered a range of technical and practical advantages over alternative surfacing options. Bodpave™ 40 offers strong technical and practical advantages over other surfacing options. It features a joint connection strength of 7kN per metre and a compressive

strength of up to 250 tonnes per square metre when filled with angular aggregate. An integrated anchoring system, with nearly 100 ground spikes per square metre, ensures long-term stability under frequent car and van traffic.

Beyond its performance benefits, Bodpave™ 40 also enabled a highly efficient installation process. Supplied in pre-clipped units, the system allowed installation teams to cover up to 600 square metres per day, significantly accelerating the build programme and minimising disruption to the estate’s daily operations.

“This project required a surface solution that could accommodate high visitor volumes while respecting the site’s heritage and natural surroundings,” said Adam Brooksbank, Sales Manager at Terram. “Bodpave™ 40 delivered the strength and durability required, and its rapid installation helped minimise disruption.”

Terram’s Bodpave™ 40 is fully compliant with Sustainable Drainage System (SuDS) regulations, offering opportunities for water reuse, enhancing water quality by filtering out pollutants, promoting local biodiversity, and helping mitigate flood risks by slowing and storing surface runoff.

Made from 100% recycled materials, Bodpave™ 40 provides a sustainable, high-performance alternative to traditional surfacing. The newly completed car parks now deliver year-round durability, improved visitor access and easier maintenance – outperforming conventional gravel solutions in both functionality and environmental impact.

HOW TO REMOVE AMINE BLUSH

The popularity of cement free brushin grouts for grouting in porcelain and natural stone paving has grown exponentially over the last decade, but they do bring with them a specific issue concerning amine blush.

Amine blush is a greasy or waxy film that can form on tiles that have been installed using a cement free brushin jointing compound. It’s caused by a reaction between the amine hardener in the epoxy and moisture and carbon dioxide in the air during curing. This reaction can lead to a hazy, cloudy or white appearance on the surface of the paver.

On porcelain pavers, if pre-grout protection has not been applied, the process of squeegeeing the grout

across the surface and into the joints can result in some of the ingredients getting caught up on the textured surface. This can also happen when applying the grout to textured and porous natural stone.

After grouting, as surfaces start to dry the residues become more visible. This often leads to the applicator reintroducing water at a critically wrong moment; basically re-wetting and over-wetting the surface. The result is an ‘Amine Blush’.

The use of brick acid and highly caustic cleaning solutions can exacerbate the staining issue and potentially damage the surface of the paver and the jointing material.

It is possible to remove residue safely by using a specialist treatment, like our own non-caustic ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover, but it is imperative that directions are carefully followed. Removal can often take more than one application and, during the process, resin will soften temporarily but joints will harden again after rinsing and drying.

The following steps will help to ensure successful removal:

1. Use a paint brush or roller to apply ECOPROTEC Joint Residue Remover directly and spread out evenly in manageable areas at a time; as far as you can reach without stepping into the solution.

2. Leave to work for up to 30 minutes. Give it a nudge with a black nylon pad every 10 minutes to see how well the residues are softening. If it begins to dry on the surface, keep it wet by spraying a light mist of water over the surface.

3. When the residues are softened, add a little water and scrub the surface using a short-haired deck brush, black nylon scrubbing pad or rotary scrubbing machine.

4. Add more water and continue scrubbing.

5. Rinse down using a hose and water or pressure washer on a low setting.

6. Leave to dry.

7. If any traces remain repeat the process.

STRATUM PLANTER WALLING – EDGBASTON

In 2023, Street Design were specified to manufacture and supply the raised planter walling and seating for a new residential development in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

Working with Winvic, the contractor and Fira, the project landscape architects, Street Design developed the manufacture details for the aluminium raised planter walling.

Podium raised planter walling

A first floor podium formed the main part of the project with 3 large, shaped, raised planting areas with porcelain paving and aluminium deck areas between the planters.

The podium build up consisted of; a plastic egg crate drainage layer with a geotextile membrane on top, allowing the planter walling panels to be assembled, creating the raised planting areas. Aluminium ground plates and cross brace straps ensured the walling remained vertical during the build and fill procedures. The planter walling was manufactured in sections and bolted together on site.

As part of the landscape design, the raised planting areas included rounded corners and changing wall heights. The radius corners were manufactured with an external

radius of 1500mm and the heights varied from 351mm up to 771mm, above the drainage layer level. The paving and decking areas were laid on an aluminium framework with riser supports.

Street Design worked closely with Deckbuilders Limited, who were appointed to install the podium garden area and a smaller roof garden on level 8. The installation of the raised walling quickly formed the raised areas and created the flooring spaces for the paving, decking and grass zones.

The scheme included seating, lighting and steps leading up to the raised grass sections. There were 2 types of seating included; low level, timber slatted, linear, informal seating that defined the steps and grass areas and more formal, recessed timber slatted

benches, set into the raised walling. The FSC-Certified seating slats were manufactured from 95x45mm section, pressure treated redwood.

The planter walling sections were manufactured from 4mm thick aluminium sheet and was polyester powder coated RAL 8014. The sections included end and intermediate slotted flanges that allowed the panels to be bolted together and be strengthened with the ground plates and cross brace straps. When fully assembled the raised areas were filled with sub-soil and an additional layer of topsoil. When the area was completed, the soft landscaping was planted with shrub planting and specimen trees.

The project included lighting in the form of uplighters, recessed side lighting to the raised planter walling and perimeter LED strip plinth lighting at the bottom of the planter.

Roof garden raised planter walling

The project also included a roof garden on the 8th floor and comprised of a much smaller area

of raised planter walling. This area was included to provide easy access to an outdoor garden space for the residents, living in that part of the development.

The roof garden build up consisted of the same plastic egg crate drainage layer with a geotextile membrane on top, allowing the planter walling panels to be assembled, creating the raised planting area.

The roof garden landscape design incorporated raised planting areas included rounded corners and changing wall heights. The paving and decking areas were laid on an aluminium framework with riser supports. The garden featured an artificial grass area.

The roof garden included lighting in the form of uplighters, recessed side lighting to the raised planter walling and perimeter LED strip plinth lighting at the bottom of the planter. Outdoor dining tables and chairs, as well as movable ‘allotmentplanters were provided for use by the residents. The movable planters

were manufactured in powder coated aluminium to match the raised planter walling and included lockable castors.

Street Design manufacture and supply several raised planter walling options, in FSC-Certified pressure treated redwood, FSC-Certified hardwood and polyester powder coated aluminium. Planter walling can be specified to create straight and curved sided shapes and can include a few planter accessories, including seating, screening and pergola shade structures.

SELF-WATERING PLANTERS AND STREET FURNITURE TO ENHANCE PUBLIC SPACES

One of the features that makes so many of Britain’s public spaces a delight to explore is the flowers and foliage that adorn our local areas.

Whether it’s vibrant perennials in hanging baskets dotted around a city centre, or outdoor seating that incorporates seasonal blooms at a local railway station, the floral displays we see on our daily commutes and holiday amblings alike can make an ordinary day just that bit brighter.

Despite its environmental benefits, ongoing maintenance can make outdoor street furniture a costly investment. To avoid having to replace benches that have rusted before their time, or the staff costs of regularly watering planters, it’s important to begin by choosing quality, long-lasting street furniture. That’s where Amberol can help.

Sustainable

All our products are rotationally moulded using a long-lasting material that is 100% recyclable at the end of its use, with black

products made of recycled polyethylene. They can withstand the change of the seasons, will not rust and require little maintenance.

Self-watering

Proud originators of the Aquafeed™ selfwatering system, our low-maintenance planter range features capillary matting that frees up users to water plants only once or twice a week – saving time, water, and money.

LOURES RIVERFRONT

TOPIARIS LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE

The initial premise of Loures Riverfront was to complete the intermunicipal pedestrian and cycling continuity, connecting Lisbon to Vila Franca de Xira, and to consolidate an important strategic plan that aims to implement a continuous route along the Tagus Riverfront in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area.

It was also intended to encourage the connection from Loures’ urban areas, isolated by roads and railway infrastructures. As a result, this pedestrian and cycling route constitutes an important mobility infrastructure with a significant impact on the current daily commuter matrix, contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions and positively affecting the lives of the communities.

An analysis of the project area revealed a surprising landscape: a mosaic of natural ecosystems in the vicinity of a highly urbanized zone. Just minutes away from densely populated neighbourhoods, one can find mudflats, salt marshes, and native reed beds, all supporting a diverse array of flora and fauna habitats.

The project sought to weave together the initial focus on mobility with the opportunity to create a unique walkway. This path would not only serve as a circulation and recreational route, but also as a platform for research, nature interpretation, and public education, raising public awareness for the importance of estuarine ecosystems, biodiversity conservation, and ocean management.

Instead of providing a quick journey from point A to point B, the project was designed to encourage a slower experience of the environment. It invites visitors to observe the birds, rest while overlooking the river, and immerse themselves in the sounds of the marsh.

The Loures Riverside trail stretches for 6.2 km along the right bank of the Tagus River. Taking inspiration from the meandering drainage lines, the trail avoids straight lines in favour of a gentle, curving path that allows observation of the habitats from different perspectives.

BLOOMING URBAN LANDSCAPES

For two decades, Pictorial Meadows has been successfully supplying, installing and maintaining largescale meadows which transform urban landscapes into vibrant, environmentally-conscious spaces.

This article delves into a variety of urban projects by Pictorial Meadows, exploring their approach in creating resilient and engaging naturebased solutions for diverse urban environments.

Meadows for Urban Brownfield Sites

With urbanisation on the rise, there is a pressing need for vibrant and cost-effective landscaping solutions that transform brownfield sites into aesthetically-pleasing spaces. Temporary meadows, composed primarily of annuals, have emerged as an effective solution.

Pictorial Meadows’ products have been used on over 150 hectares of development land, bringing not only colour and ecological benefits, but also effectively reducing antisocial behaviour. Research from the University of Sheffield validates the positive impact of Pictorial Meadows, fostering heightened feelings of happiness, calmness and relaxation among community members.

Grand Displays at Visitor Attractions

Iconic locations like the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the Tower of London serve as testaments

to Pictorial Meadows’ ability to create impact on a large-scale and their ability to transform existing as well as newly redeveloped urban spaces.

Over one hectare of meadows was planted across these two events. The Tower of London Superbloom project alone utilised over twenty million seeds from 29 flower species, creating an immersive sensory experience that captivated visitors with vibrant flowers and buzzing bees. How much visitors enjoyed the spectacle was evidenced by the number of posts and positive comments on social media.

Highways and Council Initiatives

Local councils have harnessed the potential of Pictorial Meadows for highways, using them for central reservations, verges and roundabouts. Rotherham’s eightmile River of Flowers project not only reduced maintenance costs and traffic management expenses, but also boosted biodiversity and motorist satisfaction. Testimony to this was in its first year, the council received over 250 complements about the extensive display. Coventry, with its sowing of over three hectares of meadows, earned a Green Apple Award for its significant contribution to environmental ‘greening’. The irony lies in the fact that these annual meadows bursting with colours were far from being merely green.

Perennials for Long-Term Impact

While achieving quick wins is easy with Pictorial Meadows’ annuals, the focus on long-term solutions takes precedence with perennials. North Lanarkshire has reaped the benefits, utilising Pictorial Meadows to enhance urban green spaces into flower-rich meadows, resulting in biodiversity gains and reduced maintenance visits. Solihull Council, through its Green Ways project, emphasises long-term benefits by employing Pictorial Meadows’ perennial flower turf on around fifty hectares.

Embarking on a large-scale landscaping project demands a reliable partner, and the reliability of Pictorial Meadows’ products shine through when used in large projects. Pictorial Meadows’ seamless blending of horticultural science, environmental management and creative design ensures the creation of successful, sustainable and visually-stunning urban landscapes every time.

Pictorial Meadows is part of The Green Estate Community Interest Company and offers a range of designer meadow seed mixes and turf, complemented by professional meadow creation, management and consultation services.

Wayne Grills, Chief Executive of BALI, commented: For

HOW SYNTHETIC TURF IS SUPPLYING FRESH WATER IN SOUTH AFRICA

A landmark project in South Africa is highlighting how synthetic turf can be used to enable freshwater recycling. Two ‘Cruyff Courts’ are simultaneously providing a highquality playing surface while integrating an advanced water collection and filtration system under the field, providing the local community with fresh potable water.

The installation of the courts is part of a wider initiative by the Cruyff Foundation, supporting various sports endeavours for children, and young people with special needs. The two new fields in Orange Farm, near Johannesburg, bring the total number of Cruyff Courts to 10 in the country.

The investment and innovation come as South Africa is currently grappling with one of the most severe droughts in recent history, affecting approximately 61 million people across Southern Africa. [1] The prolonged drought has led to significant water shortages, impacting both urban and rural communities.

The Government has launched the Water Crisis Action Plan 2025, focusing on infrastructure rehabilitation, smart metering systems, and new dam projects to mitigate the crisis. Despite these efforts, the agricultural sector faces devastating losses, contributing to widespread food insecurity. Innovative solutions, including public-private partnerships and technological advancements like the freshwater recycling beneath the Cruyff Courts, are also being implemented to address the urgent need for sustainable water management.

The project was headed up by EMEA Synthetic Turf Council (ESTC) member Dutchblue, who provided an advanced water collection and filtration system through its partners Project GreenSource SA.

The ‘Catch-Store-Reuse’ sports system captures rainwater, stores it in its subbase, and purifies it in a GreenSource container next to the field. Runoff collected by the system is filtered to remove contaminants,

including bacteria and metals, before being pumped to a fountain for use as potable water. The purified water can then be used via a tap on the outside of the container.

The courts represent a significant development in the use of sports pitches to collect water. Together with the local community’s help, the project was completed in December 2024, and training is being given to maintain the pitches throughout their lifetime.

The duality of providing a highquality sports playing field and clean water for the local community has resulted in some great benefits for the local area. These include potable water supplies for periods of prolonged drought and a recreational area for children and adults to play sports safely. The courts have also helped foster a sense of community identity, serving as a social hub as well as a sports facility.

Stefan Diderich, Director General at ESTC, said: “This project is a perfect example of how synthetic turf can operate not just as an enhanced playing surface, but also as a force for good in fighting drought and other hydrological issues around the world.

“Training the local community to maintain the pitch ensures they will have a lasting impact and can provide users with a high-quality surface as well as a source of clean drinking water for years to come.”

SUPPORTING FLOURISHING WATER ECOSYSTEMS WITH OTTERBINE AERATORS

To maintain clear, healthy lakes and ponds in the face of rising climates, Otterbine pond aerators are the unparalleled choice.

Following the warmest spring on record, the summer of 2025 has seen UK waters dramatically affected by the high heat. Oxygen deficiencies in ponds and lakes led to multiple cases of mass fish kills and unattractive, foul-smelling water – making national headlines as it discouraged visitors from venues nationwide.

Reesink Hydro-Scapes, the exclusive UK and Ireland distributor of Otterbine aerators, provides costeffective solutions that prevent oxygen deficiencies and help ponds and lakes flourish. From surface spray aspirators that deliver vertical circulation to horizontal aspirators for lakes up to 12ft in depth, Otterbine’s best-in-class pond

aeration systems are recognised for improving water quality.

Oxygen deficiencies are common when water maintenance doesn’t include aeration, causing issues such as thermal stratification where different-temperature layers stratify or separate, and stop oxygen reaching the lower levels. Excess nutrients like phosphorus and nitrogen also increase, producing algae that depletes the water’s oxygen supply and forms unattractive mats on the surface. Over time, this can lead to eutrophication, which is fatal for fish habitats.

Creating currents that eliminate stagnant water, aeration mixes cool water at the bottom of a lake or pond with warm water at the surface – so more water has contact with the air, helping prevent thermal

stratification. Positive aerobic bacteria then receive the oxygen needed to break up the dead or decaying organic matter.

Otterbine pond aeration has several other benefits, such as being more environmentally friendly than chemical fertilisers and disrupting the breeding cycles of mosquitos and other pests. This all works together to support a thriving water ecosystem, preventing fish kills and boosting venue reputations.

Market-leading for almost 40 years, Otterbine produces exceptional aeration systems that preserve pond and lake ecosystems.

RABY CASTLE’S GARDENS ACHIEVE SECOND PLACE IN INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Raby Castle’s recent landscape design scheme and remodelled 18th century Walled Gardens have achieved second place in the prestigious 2025 European Garden Awards.

The achievement for the County Durham destination was in the Management or Development of a Historic Park or Garden category, with the first prize going to the Promenades de Reims in Reims, France. A fellow UK nominee, the South Cliff Gardens, was also awarded second place alongside Raby Castle, Park and Gardens.

Since 2010, around 140 winners from 23 countries have received an award from the European Garden Award. Most of these have been recognised for their exceptional contributions to the maintenance and development of historic gardens, contemporary garden design, and exemplary climate adaptation initiatives.

The award acknowledged both the remodelling of the Walled Gardens, led by award-winning garden designer Luciano Giubbilei in creative collaboration with Lady Barnard, and the redesign of Raby

Castle’s extensive public areas throughout the grounds, which was managed by acclaimed landscape architect Alistair Baldwin. Both projects were completed in 2024 as part of the landmark three-year regeneration development at Raby Castle.

Lady Barnard, creative director and custodian of Raby Castle and Estates who was heavily involved in the redesign of the Walled Gardens, said: “We’re immensely proud to have achieved international recognition for the beautiful gardens and spaces throughout Raby Castle’s grounds and I’d like to extend my thanks and congratulations to both Luciano and Alistair. The spaces they have created are elegant, tranquil and perfectly encapsulate the fascinating heritage of Raby.”

Raby Castle’s Walled Gardens have also been nominated for the Historic Houses 2025 Garden of the Year Award. Sponsored by Christie’s, The Garden of the Year Award recognises the importance of some of the country’s most spectacular gardens with outstanding horticultural and public appeal.

Dickon Harding, gardens and landscape manager at Raby Castle said: “The gardens team have worked exceptionally hard to maintain the impressive vision of both Luciano and Lady Barnard, ensuring the fiveacre space continues to flourish as they had hoped and envisaged.

“It’s been wonderful to see how the three different areas within the Walled Gardens have matured over the different seasons, and we feel an immense sense of pride that we get to work in such a peaceful and beautiful place, steeped in history. Winning the Garden of the Year Award would be a brilliant achievement and thank you to everyone who has already voted for Raby in this category.”

Raby is one of eight shortlisted gardens, chosen from among the hundreds of gardens, parks, and grounds that offer free entry to members of Historic Houses, the association that represents and supports the UK’s independent historic homes, castles, and gardens, and voting is open now.

PERMEATE: THE PERFECT FUSION OF HARD AND SOFT LANDSCAPING

Transforming balconies, podium decks and terraces into gorgeous, high performance and hard-wearing areas has never been easier thanks to Wallbarn’s new Permeate Planter System.

This one-stop-shop solution takes projects from roof deck to attractive seating and lush planters with ease, delivering strong, safe and compliant outdoor spaces.

The harmonised, super flat, solution begins with Wallbarn’s MetalPad Ex pedestals and I-Plus aluminium joists. Where planters or seating are planned, fixing-free galvanised steel trays are inserted to support the additional weight, creating a robust noncombustible sub-floor onto which hard surface finishes can be laid - for example premium porcelain decking, timber-look tiles or natural stone paving.

To finish, Wallbarn has partnered with Bespoke Metal Planters for cantilevered or floating seating elements and planters in aluminium, galvanised steel, or Cor-Ten steel, finished with

powder coatings in RAL or BS colours. Integrated drainage prevents water buildup to ensure plant health and structural integrity.

“Permeate is ideal for schemes that demand aesthetics, durability and ease of access,” said Wallbarn Director Julian Thurbin. “The system empowers clients to transform overlooked spaces into vibrant, multi-functional outdoor areas ready for relaxation, social interaction or play. All components boast Class A fire-rated materials, drainage and concealed installation for a sleek, safe and sustainable exterior environment.”

This modular approach delivers quick build times, minimal mess and future access to infrastructure beneath, for example drainage, wiring or irrigation systems.

MORE THAN TURF FLOWER POWER IN HORTICULTURE FOR THE LAST TEN YEARS

Flower Power was a concept that emerged during the late 1960s and early 1970s associated with a nonviolent, peaceful approach to social and political change.

Meadowmat Birds & Bees has been all about the power of flowers for the last ten years. It is ten years since we introduced it to the landscaping world.

It is a key part of our BNG offering and can be seen as part of a peaceful approach in horticulture emphasising greater harmony with nature, supporting pollinators and offering an alternative to traditional lawns and groundcover.

It was introduced because our countryside has suffered a dramatic reduction in wild flowers which has had a knock-on effect for insects, birds and pollinators.

Meadowmat Birds & Bees was and is, one of the ways we try to redress the balance.

The Ember [fig.2], a striking 0.6m 240V bollard light with ‘rusty’ effect appearance. Crafted from Corten Steel, the finish forms a protective patina layer, with self-healing properties. This weathered, rustic finish ensures exceptional durability and aesthetic appeal, seamlessly complementing both modern and natural landscapes.

The Litecharga Corten Steel, a robust 0.8m solar-powered bollard and larger counterpart to the Ember. Boasts the same ‘rusty’ effect with a protective layer and self-healing properties. Built to last, it integrates eco-friendly technology with a CCT switch for selecting warm or daylight white light, delivering up to 24 hours of illumination.

The Observa [fig.3], a compact solarpowered floodlight with PIR motion sensor and remote control, is built for year-round performance in UK weather. Available in 10W and 30W models, it delivers reliable, energyefficient illumination for up to 50sq.m.

AVENUE: THE FLEXIBLE, SUSTAINABLE URBAN LIGHTING SOLUTION THAT DELIVERS ON EVERY FRONT

Drawing on decades of outdoor lighting expertise, Thorn Lighting has launched an exciting urban solution, created in collaboration with Scandinavian studio Lyhne Design. The new Avenue family consists of four product types: post-top, lateral arm, lateral post-top and suspended, providing the flexibility to meet the varied needs of lighting schemes for urban spaces in a consistent and connected design language.

Avenue was developed through close collaboration between Lyhne Design and Thorn’s in-house technical teams and customer base. The result is a versatile product family that caters to many different urban lighting scenarios, including parks, pathways, pedestrian zones, car parks, residential areas and urban roads.

A key outcome of this new method of development is Thorn’s

‘Quad’ modular platform (patent pending). The modular design simplifies maintenance, upgrades, refurbishment, and eventual disassembly and recycling. A single-piece refurbishment kit and simple Zhaga-down retrofit solution provides the flexibility to upgrade the connectivity and IoT features and extend the product lifecycle for generations to come.

Avenue is compatible with Thorn’s full range of UrbaSens connectivity solutions, from simple pointto-point controls to large scale intelligent control networks beyond light.

The Avenue family is built on Thorn’s well-established optical platform, offering a range of optical configurations for both Road and Street and Urban Amenity

applications. All variants are engineered to minimise upward light output, reducing light pollution and protecting dark skies. A new approach to optical bowl design and comfort optic has also been developed for Avenue post-top, providing a soft glow ambience with minimal glare for increased visual comfort.

Morten Lyhne, of Lyhne Design, commented: “At Lyhne Design, our way of working is shaped by Danish design tradition, emphasising good craftsmanship with a focus on functionality, minimalism and aesthetics. Each design feature makes sense in relation to functionality, construction and production methods, and the design consists of as few parts as possible in high quality, reusable or recyclable materials.

“The visual design features clean, harmonious lines, transforming a highly technical and functional product into something simultaneously poetic.”

Eliot Horsman, Director of Product & Application Management at Thorn Lighting added: “Avenue is manufactured in Thorn Lighting’s highly accredited plant in Spennymoor, UK, bringing together the best of Scandinavian design and British manufacturing. It’s a lighting solution built not just for today’s cities, but for the evolving needs of future urban environments.”

The Workshop

Machinery, and knowing how to get the most out of your tech, is vital when it comes meeting the growing demand for pitches and green spaces. The Workshop is a brandnew feature to SALTEX – and it promises to be a gamechanger.

Delivering live, hands-on machinery guidance for professionals and volunteers, the Workshop will help you get to grips with the latest equipment and sharpen your skills with the equipment you’ve already got.

Sessions will be led by Tom Stidder, one of the industry’s most respected turf machinery experts. With more than 27 years’ experience in turf care, Tom’s career has taken him from a workshop technician to senior technical training and consulting positions with major machinery manufacturers.

Powering the industry

As the UK’s leading not-for-profit supporting the grounds management sector, the GMA is proud to reinvest every penny of surplus revenue from SALTEX directly back into

the industry. Unlike commercial exhibitions, SALTEX is mission-led and impact-driven - designed to advance the sector, not generate profit for shareholders. That means funding cutting-edge training programmes, supporting members and improving the skills of those who keep sport and green spaces thriving across the UK. When SALTEX succeeds, the entire industry benefits - fuelling long-term sustainability.

That reinvestment makes a real difference. Income from SALTEX 2024 helped subsidise membership fees for around 63% of the GMA’s members. It also enabled over 2,000 subsidised training course places – opening up opportunities for 7% more learners in just one year.

Profits from the show also power the industry’s gold standard training and qualifications. In the last financial year alone, income from SALTEX helped subsidise over 2,000 GMA training courses, opening the door for an extra 7% more learners. That means more groundspeople upskilling and delivering better pitches and sports facilities.

The GMA remains the only industry body accredited under the Department for Education’s matrix Standard – recognition of our commitment to high-quality information, advice and guidance. And it’s SALTEX that makes this possible.

Free to attend – secure your spot

SALTEX is completely free to attend, as are all of our seminars – and you can attend as many as you’d like across both days.

Join more than 7,300 professionals and volunteers, over 400 leading brands and 65 expert speakers at this unmissable event.

SIS PITCHES MAKES LANDMARK INVESTMENT

IN FLEET OF NEXT GENERATION HYBRID PITCH STITCHING MACHINES

Sports surfaces specialist SIS Pitches has made a multi-million-pound investment into a fleet of 16 new hybrid pitch stitching machines.

Developed to meet growing demand for faster installations and greater configurability, the new state-ofthe-art machines feature patented technologies that increase the rate and efficiency of fibre injection on grass-based sports surfaces. Once installed these fibres then accelerate recovery times and reinforce a playing surface by promoting stronger, healthier root systems.

The investment will allow SIS Pitches to ease the operational pressure on multi-use stadia, whose narrowing timeframes to install hybrid grass pitches between matches and nonsporting events represents a major challenge. This need for speed and

flexibility – without compromising in quality - has been driven by clubs and franchises around the world seeking to maximise stadium revenue by hosting concerts, exhibitions and fixtures spanning multiple sports.

In response, SIS Pitches’ new fleet can now complete a full hybrid pitch installation in a much shorter timeframe than before. This is possible thanks to a more compact design that allows two units to be transported in a single shipping container. Working together, the machines are able to reduce the typical installation period of a fullsized football pitch from an industry average of around ten days to just over three. This reduction is expected to be a major boost to ground staff and facility operators alike, in some cases offering a time saving of up to 75% compared to competitors.

The benefits have already been seen first-hand at the Hard Rock Stadium, home to the Miami Dolphins, where ahead of the Club World Cup a fresh turf stitched pitch was recently completed in just three and a half days.

Two different models have been developed as part of the investment. The first, named Pro-X is designed to cover larger pitches, such as those already completed at Borussia Monchengladbach, Celtic Park and the Racecourse Ground, home to Wrexham Football Club. The second model, Spin-X, is the first hybrid machine made specifically for cricket pitches, with a lower weight and unique made-to-measure wicket option.

Development of the 16 new SIS Grass Hybrid machines will further

improve the industry-leading quality, flexibility and speed of SIS Pitches’ stitching capabilities, which are frequently used for major sporting competitions, including the World Cup, Rugby World Cup, NFL, Premier League, Saudi Pro League and several other top European leagues.

Each new machine boasts a patented drum mechanism that allows for faster stitching by enabling forward movement in larger increments than comparable machines. Meanwhile, the combination of a new cutting device and an innovative needle clamp system ensures precision and consistency in every stitch. Both of these features have been recently patented.

Thanks to a fully customisable stitching configuration the new machines can stitch to any depth from 45mm to 180mm. This marks a major step forward from competing technologies of this type, which are generally limited to only two set depths. SIS Grass Hybrid machines can also offer the widest range of spacing options available on the market, from 15x20, 20x20 and 30x20. This ultimately allows grounds managers to specify an installation with the right level of reinforcement for their athletes and climate, while also accommodating the needs of a stadium, pitch profile or budget.

TOOLS, PLANT & EQUIPMENT

One of the configurations made possible by the new machines is SIS Pitches’ pioneering shallow stitch concept – GameReady Hybrid – with fibres pre-stitched into turf/sod rolls at 45mm depths.

This is a fully tested and data-backed innovation that offers an industry first: the installation of a prestitched turf that can be harvested, transported and laid as a ready-toplay reinforced hybrid surface in a matter of days. Three stadiums in the United States have already made use of the unique GameReady system: MetLife in New York, Camping World in Orlando and the Bank of America in North Carolina.

Ivo Lamot, CEO at SIS Pitches said:

“The development of our new hybrid pitch stitching machines is a major step forward for us as a business, and demonstrates our continued commitment to innovation and providing the very best playing surfaces. Further, the new machines have immediately raised the bar for stadium owners and operators seeking the quick and customisable installation of a new playing surface.

“Throughout our R&D process, we’ve been conscious that grounds staff working in stadia around the world now typically have much narrower windows in which they are expected to change their pitch. Through a

combination of patented technology and stadium-oriented design, we’ve created a solution that meets the evolving needs of customers around the world. Plans are already in place for us to apply this concept to world renowned stadia looking for the fastest ever turnaround between a concert and competitive fixture.

“As a business, our purpose is to power more play. By increasing both the speed and quality of a typical hybrid pitch installation, we’re making stitched hybrid technology more accessible than ever before, ensuring multi-use stadia can host more sporting events and generate more revenue than ever before.”

The fleet of new machines will be deployed across the world throughout July, strategically located in areas of anticipated demand. There will be sets located in Europe, USA, Canada, South America, the Middle East, and also a set that can be moved around the rest of the world as required.

As one of the UK’s most experienced playground specialists, our focus is simple: safe, inclusive, and welldesigned play for every age and ability. We work with house builders, architects, councils, schools, visitor attractions, and community groups, offering either a full design-andbuild service or expert support on the play element of a wider scheme.

Your Expert Partners in Play

Our strength lies in adapting to each site, turning challenges into wellconsidered spaces where children and families genuinely want to be. With decades of collaboration across sectors, we balance design integrity, technical precision, and user engagement to ensure every playground complements the bigger picture.

What We Offer

• Design: Consultation to concept, including equipment solutions that align with budgets and planning needs.

• Project Management: End-toend delivery covering surfacing, planting, fencing, and seating.

• Installation: Accredited, nationwide service completed to the highest safety standards.

• Safety Inspection: Independent assessments to ensure compliance and peace of mind.

Engineered for Longevity

Our Robinia timber and precisionengineered steel ranges are built to last, meeting rigorous safety and quality standards. With industryleading warranties, 30 years on steel and 15 years on timber, our products are designed for longterm performance and minimal maintenance.

Supporting Communities

Playgrounds are more than equipment, they’re catalysts for stronger, healthier, and happier neighbourhoods. A well-designed play space encourages children to be active, develop confidence, and interact with others, while giving parents and carers a safe, social meeting point. Communities benefit too! Busy, well-loved spaces help reduce anti-social behaviour, draw footfall to nearby businesses, and become central landmarks within local life.

We’ve seen first-hand how playgrounds can transform an area, from boosting wellbeing and encouraging outdoor activity to creating shared spaces where generations connect.

IN RECYCLED PLASTIC PLAY EQUIPMENT

At PlayQuest, we recognise that the choices we make regarding the materials we use in our play equipment will have an impact on everyday life.

We use Recycled Plastic produced from the waste collected by domestic recycling schemes - which includes plastic bottles and food containers.

As well as being better for the environment, the Recycled Plastic material does not rot or splinter, will last for decades and is virtually maintenance free.

We can also replace individual old, rotten timbers with new Recycled Plastic posts, saving the cost of replacing old play equipment with brand new play equipment.

Our Recycled Plastic play equipment comes with a 30-YEAR guarantee, with a life-expectancy of 50 years + in the ground!
