SIS Pitches prepares Estadio BBVA as spotlight falls on Mexico

reparations ahead of the next World Cup are in full swing, with less than a year until the tournament commences on June 11, 2026.

P

The first to be hosted across three nations, 48 teams from six confederations will travel across North and Central America over the course of a month, visiting 16 venues to decide the winner.

It’s arguably the most logistically complex football tournament ever held, laying the foundations for a similarly ambitious centenary edition in 2030.

Estadio BBVA will be one of three Mexican stadiums used in 2026. Having opened in 2015 as the new home to Liga MX team CF Monterrey, the ground and much of its surrounding infrastructure already met FIFA guidelines. Recognising the need

for playing surface improvements, however, the management team sought a full refit of the pitch in early 2025 to prepare it for the crucial months ahead.

This is where SIS Pitches entered the frame.

Elite in 10 weeks The client brief was simple: deliver a pitch fit for World Cup standards and specification, playable within 10 weeks.

This short window was particularly challenging given the changes agreed through early consultation. Estadio BBVA’s old playing surface was to be fully excavated to make way for a series of advanced drainage and aeration systems developed by SIS. Once installed, the top layer would then be fitted with a hardwearing stitched hybrid pitch.

Working together, these components not only promote ideal root zone growth conditions but also allow stadiums to manage a packed calendar of fixtures and events without impacting the quality of their playing surface.

This was especially important for Estadio BBVA, with a packed summer of events and a full domestic football season planned before and after the World Cup. The planning and process As with any large project of this kind, the key to successful delivery lies in good preparation.

SIS and Estadio BBVA agreed work would commence in May 2025, once CF Monterrey’s season concluded.

From the early conversations held in January, this gave the SIS team only a few months to plan, design and procure everything needed to deliver the new pitch in time.

Much like the ’26 World Cup, the project demanded solid logistics management. Everything had to be ready to go in May – equipment, materials and teams – if the 10-week turnaround was to remain achievable. In preparation, SIS had two containers shipped from Europe to Mexico in advance of work commencing.

Excavation took just over two weeks. Once the area had been fully cleared down to the formation level, trenches were dug for irrigation pipework to be laid. The sand bed was then added, with gravel and a root bed on top, and finished with fresh natural turf, grown 100km away in the turf farm chosen by the client and FIFA. Among the world’s most advanced playing surface Estadio BBVA represents an important step forward for SIS, as the first major stadium to install three of our solutions at a single project.

The first was a new version of SIS Air – a turf aeration and rainwater management system designed to promote stronger, healthier grass. For Monterrey, the system was upgraded with enhanced moisture and temperature sensors, allowing the site team to adapt to local conditions in Mexico, where natural grass typically struggles to thrive.

All set for the coupe du monde SIS’s planning and logistics has paid off, with the stadium now set for one of the world’s most-watched sporting events.

This upgrade was designed to work alongside SIS Aqua, an advanced pitch irrigation system with 35 pop-up units that can be individually controlled. This creates an even distribution of water across the pitch, delivering a uniform playing surface.

Delivery was completed by 24 July, meeting the 10-week deadline. The result is an elite-level football pitch now capable of performing to the highest standards all year round, supported by a suite of tools that optimise play regardless of local conditions.

Finally – and key to meeting the 10-week turnaround – the stadium was fitted with SIS Hybrid. The installation of hybrid grass can be completed in as little as three days

Since completion, SIS has been on site to hand over to the Estadio BBVA site team, advising on regular maintenance and scheduling. Initial feedback has been positive.

New GKB Deep-Clean to combat microplastic pollution from artificial turf KB are pleased to launch the next generation of their Deep-Clean machine, introduced in direct response to growing concern around microplastic pollution from artificial turf fields. Featuring different sieve options to suit various infill types and a selfcleaning filter system, the DeepClean – developed in collaboration with SMG Sportplatzmaschinenbau – sieves, separates and collects microplastics with precision.

Recent research from the University of Barcelona has raised alarm after finding that up to 15% of the microplastics found in open water originate from artificial turf pitches. These particles, released via fibre wear and tear or from infill materials such as rubber and TBE, accumulate within the surface and eventually contaminate the environment via footfall, rainfall or

maintenance activities.

The new GKB Deep-Clean directly addresses this issue, penetrating the surface to extract contamination such as broken fibres as well as smaller particulates nestled within the infill layer.

Redeveloping one of the most popular machines within GKB’s synthetic portfolio, the new Deep-Clean will be available with a 1.2m, 1.5m or 1.8m working widths – all offering effective dust extraction to collect dirt and microplastic contamination, and return clean infill granules back into the surface. Importantly, the unique cleaning system means that dirt automatically falls into the collection container, eliminating the need to replace filters which significantly reduces ongoing maintenance costs.Its operation couldn’t be simpler.

Brushes lift the fibre and infill, before passing the collected material through a vibrating sieve to separate the infill from both large and finer contaminants.

The result is a cleaner, safer and more presentable pitch in just one pass.The introduction of the Deep-Clean is the first major development in the strategic partnership between GKB Machines and SMG, formally announced in March 2025. The agreement sees GKB providing essential maintenance products to the German company and, likewise, market machines developed by SMG under the GKB brand for the combined benefit of customers around the world.

Together, the focus is on providing practical, high-performance and sustainable solutions for the construction and maintenance of synthetic sports fields.

Oban Bowling Club strengthens green care with Maredo STrac 720 System

M

embers of Oban Bowling Club have taken a major step in future-proofing their green with the purchase of a Maredo STrac 720 system, complete with ST160 CleanCut Sand Filler and ST230 High-Speed Corer attachments.

Located in the West Highlands, the club is volunteer-led, and the members and committee chose to invest in new machinery to safeguard playing quality and ensure the club continues to thrive.

The self-propelled STrac 720 requires no tractor, making it ideal for hard-to-access areas with tight spaces or changing levels. Compact and easy to manoeuvre, it features intuitive controls on its guiding handle. With a short turning radius, the rear wheels can adopt various operating positions. Tools connect cassette-style, enabling quick changeovers between tasks.

Working width is a practical 65 cm.

The STrac 720 system supports a full range of eight interchangeable cassette heads, including the VibeDisc-Seeder, VibeSpikeAerator and Flex-Verticutter. This versatility makes the machine fast and effective — even on difficult undulations — and allows users to deliver uniform turf care and presentation across a whole site.

The system was supplied by Stuart Cameron, Area Sales Manager for Fairways GM, distributors of Maredo equipment in Scotland.

At Oban, the access ramp to the playing area was already suitable, allowing the unit to start work immediately. Greens Ranger Ian McCuish has been running the machine for Oban Bowling Club as part of their maintenance programme.

Anne MacDougall, Secretary of Oban Bowling Club, said: “As a volunteer-run club, we’re aware of the importance of looking after what we have. We were confident the STrac offers excellent value and versatility for the work we need to do.”

The machine has already been in use with the ST160 CleanCut Sand Filler, which cuts narrow channels into the turf and backfills them with sand in a single pass — relieving compaction, improving drainage and promoting healthy root growth. The greens will also benefit from regular tining across the winter months, weather permitting, using the ST230 HighSpeed Corer, which delivers fast, precise aeration to a depth of up

9. Cricket in focus • The square - the days of putting the square to bed and forgetting about it are long gone. With mild and wet winters more common, growth is continuing all through the winter months, making the winter maintenance an important factor in keeping both the outfield and square in good condition. The occasional surveillance of the square will provide the opportunity of investigating any outbreak of fungal disease and also enable the detection of any excessive grass growth. Do not roll the square until February/March, in preparation for the start of the new season.

• Mowing - during mild spells it may be necessary to top the grass to ensure that the sward growth is not weakened in the spring by removing too much growth in a short period of time.

Before cutting, walk the square to remove any debris or rubbish that may have accumulated to ensure

that no damage will be caused to the mower.

Baroness delivers reliability and performance that lasts at Tall Pines Golf Club or over 20 years, Bristol’s Tall Pines Golf Club have relied on the consistency and quality of Baroness to keep their playing surfaces in pristine condition. Head Greenkeeper Marc Rossiter currently runs a fleet of eight Baroness mowers to cut every blade of grass at the 18-hole course, praising the outstanding simplicity in operation and industry-leading reliability of cut the brand has delivered for over two decades.

“Our LM315GC greens mowers can also be equipped with rollers and scarifier cassettes, which we can

Flood relief at Caersws Football Club aersws Football Club, founded in the late 19th century, adopted its present name in 1974 when it relinquished its amateur status.

The club’s first successes came in the nineteen sixties, winning the Mid-Wales League and the Welsh Amateur Cup. In 1992 they became founder members of the League of Wales and subsequently won the League Cup twice. The team plays at the Recreation Ground, Caersws, which accommodates up to 4000 spectators.

Situated close to the River Severn, the ground floods regularly when the river bursts its banks in winter months. But once the flood water subsided, the pitch would not be playable for up to 2 weeks due standing water on the pitch not draining away. This resulted in the club having to move matches to another club’s ground, which had a 3G pitch, to meet the demands of the league schedule. In the 2023/24 season, they managed only one game across three winter months

Investigations into the causes revealed the pitch to be sitting on 0.7 metres depth of clay and constant rolling over the years had compacted the surface even further. Normal aeration would have no impact on the problem.

Caersws Club chair, Neil Lewis, had heard of the work by Terrain Aeration at other pitches and called them in to see if they could resolve the issue. Terrain has a unique system used for over thirty years with their Terralift machines.

V-Ride flails on Pedestrian Mowers This year has seen a distinct rise in the use of flails on pedestrian mowers – and the increased popularity of the V-Ride Stand-on mower range.

The V-Ride can be fitted with a variety of rotary deck widths from 32” gate entry size up to 72”. The V-Ride positions the operator on a spring-loaded stand at the back, and a comfortable foam pad to lean against. This gives excellent in-use visibility by virtue of placing the operator almost exactly at the centre of the cut. A further significant factor in the popularity of the machine is ease of transport. Because it has a small footprint it goes easily on a regular trailer, or, indeed, into a Transit-sized van.

As for the increase in flail head orders, changes in routine cutting frequency have put a demand on regular cutting heads to which a flail deck is more suited.They are utilised on the SWZ pedestrian machines in 30, 36 and 48” widths with optional cutters, i.e. twisted (short or long) and back-to-back “Y” format.
