October in the Park!

Greetings Neighbors,

The much awaited Fall season is here and we are all grateful for a break from the heat of summer! Now it's just a matter of time before we start in on our leaf raking up the leaves that give us shade in the spring & summer. Let us know in the office if you need leaf bags for your homesite, we will provide them and pick them up from the front of your space once they are full. You can also ask our groundskeeper Bobby for bags, he has them on his golf cart.

We all miss our dear friend and neighbor Martha Theis, her kind heart and positive outlook was always a bright spot wherever she appeared. She kept such good & detailed records of the park and its history & she knew everything about the community that she and her family are part of.

While her sisters were going through some of her saved park information they found some interesting publications. I have included one of them in this month's newsletter, it's a pictorial directory from our park in 1970! I became manager here in 2012 and 3 residents in this directory were still here, Owen King, Bob Lacek and Elsie Jasman!

Also in this month is a park map that has the different streets named just for fun! These are names that our precious Martha came up with a long time ago.

Remember, we value your input and feedback for our monthly newsletter. This is your publication and we look forward to your life stories and ideas for things to do here. You'll find a page this month with that opportunity.

Physical Fitness and Safety at Home

Hello neighbors. This month I will be talking about getting up after a fall and the exercises to strengthen yourself. After a fall it is best to stay calm. Check yourself for injuries. Then slowly roll to your side. Then push yourself up onto your hands and knees. Crawl to a piece of furniture. Then place your hands on the seat. Push yourself up to a self-kneeling position. Then push yourself up to a standing position.

First we will talk about rolling on to your side. This requires some core strength. Lying in your bed. Bend one leg at a time and put both feet flat on the bed. Then reach your right hand toward the left side of your bed. Keeping both your head and back straight. Roll onto your left side. Hold this position and return to a lying position. Then practice this on the right side.

Second, once we are on our side we need to get into a hands and knees position. Now we need to crawl to a chair or footstool.

Third, we need to put both hands on the chair and lift ourselves up with our arms to kneeling position. Then using both arms and legs lift yourself up to a standing position. Until next month.

CLUBHOUSE HANG OUT TIME

Of course you can come to the clubhouse anytime during the day, but often you will be the only one there. Perhaps you would like to come at times when there is a better chance that others are present. So we have set up a time each week when it is more likely you can meet up and socialize with other residents. Come to the clubhouse between 1 and 4 pm on Thursdays. You can meet your neighbors, work on the jigsaw puzzle, browse the bookshelves, check-out the "give and take" table, or just chat with other residents. If you have a favorite board game, bring it along and maybe find others who would like to join you. This would also be a great time to celebrate a birthday or other special occasion with your neighbors.

acrwmes PUNNING MEETING

All residents are invited to attend the Community Activity Planning meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, October 1 at 1:30 pm. We will plan activities for the month of November and beyond. If you have suggestions on what activities you would like to see in Imperial Manor, this would be the place to come and share your ideas.

SUNDAY WALK/BIKE NIGHT

Join us for our Sunday night walking/biking group. We meet at the clubhouse at the designated time and walk throughout the park, chatting with neighbors and enjoying their company. Join in anytime as we traverse the park. In October will begin the walk at 5:00 pm, but the time is adjusted periodically to account for the change in the time of sunset.

Give A "Give and Take" table has been set up in the clubhouse. Residents are invited to put items they no longer want on the table and perhaps find a treasure left by another resident. Please no expired food items.

Luncheon out for October will be at Sizzler's on Madison Avenue.

The Cherokee Gardener

Osiyo Nigada, That's Cherokee for Hello Everyone,

Carol the Cherokee Gardener here for October. Well as summer winds down and going into fall I'm going to plant winter vegetables. I am so thankful for what God has given us in the way of healthy foods that I have been blessed to be able to grow over the years.

I've learned from my Cherokee ancestors how to stay healthy and choose the best plants to grow and when to plant them to produce my own food. My Grandmother & Great Grandmother taught me the ways of the people. It does take a lot of work but boy it sure does pay off! I love to eat, so this allows me to eat & eat as much as I like while staying thin and healthy.

I was able to harvest a lot of corn, okra, peppers, beets, and potatoes in abundance this season. I am now going to plant green beans, onions, potatoes, lettuce, beets, greens, and garlic.

This last wind storm we just had on September 2ndleft me with much plant damage and big messes to clean up around my little urban farm. I'm going experiment with making a small greenhouse with pots together, wish me luck or stop by my space #128 and check my progress. Below are some pictures of my most recent harvest.

Stay safe & healthy until next time WADO (thank you in Cherokee)

LABOR DAY BBQ PICNIC IN THE PARK

On Monday September ISt we held our annual Labor Day BBQ picnic in the clubhouse, pool and patios. Many residents were in attendance and all enjoyed the time together. We had live music from a resident band. We had people enjoying the pool with their families. People sat around the tables outside and in the clubhouse meeting new residents and catching up with others. Residents prepared side dishes and shared with the party. Park provided BBQ Teriyaki chicken and foot long hotdogs and soft drinks. Thanks to everyone who helped and attended.

Next Event will be our Halloween Party with a costume and pumpkin contest, see the page.

We are very interested in knowing about any new and different Activities and Ideas that would be of interest to you and your neighbors here in this community. We love the main event participation that happens at our 3 regular annual events and we would like to know about some new ones that would be of interest to our residents. You could attend the clubhouse meeting that happens at the beginning of each month OR you could submit your ideas on this page and turn it into the park office. What are things that interest you and would inspire you to come to the clubhouse to join in with others? Let's have some new fun!

The wall

In 2023

Citrus Heights was selected to host The Wall That Heals, three-quarter size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, along with a Education Center. The Wal/ That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces during the Vietnam War, and it bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the

ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. March 2023 the Wall arrived in Rusch Park, the showcase was open 24 hours a day, and had more than 10,000 visitors from as far as Nevada, Oregon, Washington, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area.

There are the names of eight former Citrus Heights residents on the memorial and upward of 300 from the Sacramento area. Due to the success of the event, the Citrus Heights Veterans Memorial Project was created to raise funds to build a permanent wall in Citrus Heights.
