Mother's Day

About Mother's Day

When is Mother's Day? This holiday is celebrated on the second Sunday in May It’s Mother’s Day. That means today is all about Mom. Everybody has a mother and absolutely no one is more special than your mom. Sure, dad is important. And grandparents too. But moms, well they are just the greatest. Often taken for granted, they are always our strongest supporters. You can’t do wrong with Mom’s eyes. When you are hurt, or not feeling well, there is no one else that can help you morethan Mom. I saw this when our son was in the emergency room. Sure, dad was an important presence. But the look in my son’s eyes with his mom by his side was a certain affirmation of mom’s comforting ways and importance.

So go out and celebrate Mother’s Day. First and foremost, spend time with her. If you absolutely cannot be there, take time for a long phone call. Flowers, cards, candy, and gifts are all part of the day. But mom wants some time with you far more than anything else.

Did you know? The first Mother’s Day was May 10, 1908, in Philadelphia

How to Celebrate Mother's Day

It’s allabout Mom.

 First and foremost, mom just wants her children to spend time with her.

 Tell her how much you care and that you love her.

 Or prepare and cook the meals. That includes doing the dishes.

 Take her to breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

 Give her flowers.

 Buy her gifts.

History and Origin of Mother's Day

In the United States, a form of Mother’s Day has been celebrated since the early 20th century. It was started as a religious observance by Ana Jarvis. She promoted the first worship service to honor mothers. The first formal Mother’s Day i the U.S. was not until1908.

Some other countries have celebrated this holiday for centuries.

Memorial Day

About Memorial Day

When is Memorial Day? This holiday is always observed on the last Monday in May Memorial Day is officially celebrated last Monday in May. Memorial Day is dedicated to service men and women who gave their lives for freedom and country. It isalso a time to remember loved ones who have passed away. The roots of Memorial Day observance go back to 1865 and the end of the CivilWar.

The ultimate sacrifice made by millions of U.S. servicemen and women is perhaps best exemplified by Nathan Hale as he was about to be executed by the British for spying for the Continental Army when he said, “Ionly regret that I have but one life to lose for my country.”

Memorial Day was traditionally held on the 30th of May. In 1971, Congress changed itto last Monday, to create a three-day holiday weekend. Regardless of the date, we encourage you to follow Memorial Day tradition: attend a parade and visit a cemetery to honor and remember our serviceman. Take time to remember lost loved ones in whatever way you feelappropriate.

Did you Know? Memorial Day was first called Decoration Day. It was changed to Memorial Day in 1882.

Memorial Day also marks the beginning of the gardening and summer seasons, even though summer willnot occur until a few weeks later. This day usually includes the first family picnic of the year.

How to Celebrate Memorial Day

 Visit the graves of servicemen and women.

 Plant flowers on the graves of loved ones.

 Attend a parade.

 Have a picnic.

Cinco de Mayo

About Cinco de Mayo

When is Cinco de Mayo Day? This holiday is always celebrated on May 5 Cinco De Mayo Day is a May 5 Mexican holiday. However, it is widely celebrated in the United States, especially among the Mexican people living here. On May 5, 1862, the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battleof Puebla. This single military battle signified the defeat of a European colonial power and a victory for the Mexican people. This single battle was the roots of Cinco de Mayo.

Note: Cinco de Mayo is not the celebration of Mexican Independence which is celebrated on September 16th.

What Cinco de Mayo has come to be, is much more than one battle in the colonial history of Mexico. Rather, it has come to signify Hispanicand Mexican pride and a time to celebrate the rich culture.

Today, this holiday is celebrated by Mexicans, and especially the Hispanic community in the U.S. It is a time of song, dance, partying, and in general a time to be proud to be of Hispanic descent.

How to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo

Here are some ways to celebrate and participate in Cinco de Mayo:

 Celebrate Mexican Independence.

 Learn more about the Battle of Puebla.

 Learn more about Mexico’s fight for Independence.

 Dress in Mexican clothing.

 Wear a sombrero.

 Enjoy a margarita for you before dinner cocktail.

 Hold a Mexican party.

 Eat Mexican food today. May we suggest Fajitas, tacos, and quesadillas?
