14th Century Templars and the 20th Century

Battlefield Band

I have longbeen afan of theTemplars. Around 1118, a French knight named Hugues de Payens created a military order along with eight others, calling it the Poor FellowSoldiers of Christ and the Temple of Solomon—later known simply as the Knights Templar. In 1139, Pope Innocent II issued a Papal Bull that allowed the Knights Templar special rights. Among them, the Templars were exempt from paying taxes, permitted to build their own oratories and were held to no one’s authority except the Pope’s. The Knights Templar set up a prosperous network of banks and gained enormous financial influence. Their banking system allowed religious pilgrims to deposit assets in their home countries and withdraw funds in the Holy Land and vice versa.

Bytheearly 14th century, the Templarshad beenextremely successful financially and infactthe Frenchgovernment owned themahugesumofmoney.In1309 on Friday the13th of October (the source of our superstitions ofFriday, the 13th) tens of thousands of French Templars were arrested, including the order’s grand master Jacques de Molay. (During high school I was a member of the Masonic order for young men called the “De Molay.”) Many of the knights were brutally tortured in 1309 until they confessed to false charges, which included heresy, financial corruption, devil-worshipping, fraud, spitting on the cross and more. Later dozens of Templars were burned at the stake in Paris for their confessions. Jacques de Molay was executed in 1314.

Under pressure by King Philip of France, Pope Clement V reluctantly dissolved the Knights Templar in 1312. The group’s property and monetary assets were given to a rival order, the Knights Hospitallers. However, it’s thought that King Philip and King Edward II of England seized most of the Knights Templar’s wealth. Many of the Templars fled to England. But then the King of England banished the Templars but gave them 90 days’ notice to leave England. As a result, many of them settled in a small town in Scotland named Temple. They built a small church called Temple Midlothian

On a trip to Scotland, I arranged for a guide to take me to Templar sites during a free day. We stopped at Temple Midlothian, where I took this picture, and visited some Templar graves in an adjacent cemetery. It was exactly what I had hoped for the trip.

As we were getting into the car, the guide mentioned that we were across the street from a house owned by the Battlefield Band and asked if I had ever heard of them. I was huge fan of theirs primarily due to a weekly NPR program which often featured their music.

We wentto thehouse and introduced ourselves. Afterfinding out Iwas ahugefan and after I describedthealbumsthat I listened to on a regular basisthey invited us intothehouse. The house also servedastheir recording studio and they saidthatthey were rehearsing for a new album. Theywere very graciousand allowed us to watch as they wentthrough acoupleof new songs. We weretherefor morethan anhourand I was ableto get a specialpackageof several CDs. Thiswas one of the most memorable and pleasant, serendipitous events ofallof my travels.

Communication Problem

A farmer went to the attorney's office and said he wanted to get a divorce. The attorney asked if he had any grounds.

"Yeah, I got about 240 acres," the farmer said. The attorney replied, "But, I mean do you have a case?"

"No, I have a John Deere."

"Well, do you have a grudge?"

The farmer said, "Yea, I got a grudge. That's where I park my John Deere."

"No, I mean do you have a suit?"

"Yes, sir, I got a suit. I wear it to church on Sundays."

Next, the exasperated lawyer asked, "Well, sir, does your wife beat you up or anything?"

"No, we both get up about 4:30."

The attorney finally asked, "OK, so why do you want a divorce?"

"Well," said the farmer, "I can't have a meaningful conversation with her!"
