NOTES FROM YOUR PEWRA BOARD Dogs * Grandchildren * Signs Palomar Estates West is dog friendly with over 100 homes with dogs. At least 50 of these units are known to use the dog park Currently we are replacing some chairs and cushions at the dog park. At one time there were 2 benches and 12 chairs. We are going to keep the number of chairs at 8 as we discard the older chairs. For all dog park users please respect the rules and be courtesy to your neighbors. Dog park hours are 8 to 8, not dawn to dusk. The parking spaces next to the dog park are not only for dog park use, they are like any additional parking in PEW. Please pick up the balls, toys, towels, etc. when you leave the park so it does not look full of clutter. Also, children are permitted in the dog park with an adult just like the other areas of PEW.
Palomar Estate is grandchildren friendly. Children’s hours are posted at the pool. The board is not planning any changes to the rules and hours. They will however look at special events and open the pool area for families for extended time. We did this for the Fourth of July party and the Labor Day BBQ. Next year we may do Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc. Don’t forget that there is a Grandparents closet in the room with the athletic equipment next to the gym. There are toys, games, and other essentials available to park residents.
PEWRA election sign rules state that signs can be placed no sooner than 30 days prior to the election. They should be removed the week after the election ends. Please be sure the signs do not impede sight lines for drivers.
Speed and stop signs are and ongoing issue as we try to reduce speeding and add safety to our park.

PEW Book Club Greetings from the Book Club! This month’s book is “Yesteryear” by Caro Claire Burke It is Burke’s debut novel, published in 2026. This is a satirical thriller about a “tradwife” social media influencer who wakes up in 1855, forced to confront the harsh reality behind the perfect, curated life she promotes online. The book explores themes of fame, motherhood, and faith, blending dark comedy with suspense as the protagonist, Natalie, navigates a brutal, pre-modern world she only pretended to live in. It’s a biting commentary on the performance of womanhood on social media, questioning the authenticity of the “tradwife” lifestyle. The History of the Tomato Plant By Herb C. Field Forensic Entomologist
I thought as this will be August/September’s article and August and September are the months that tomatoes are typically producing it would be the perfect time to present you with a history of what most gardeners would consider their favorite plant. The tomato originated in western South America, Mexico and Central America. The natives, Nahuati called the tomato, tomati which gave rise to the Spanish word tomate from which the English word tomato is derived. While tomatoes are classified as a fruit they are botanically in the family of berries! Deb’s and my hero, James Underwood Crocket from the famed PBS gardening show of the 1070’s stated that in the 1800’s most Europeans considered the tomato a dangerous food even unworthy to put in your garden. My how things have changed! There are now over 10,000 varieties of tomatoes on the market. Some varieties are quite common like the Early Girl and the Roma while others are very rare like the Burmese Sour and the Syrian Stuffer. The wild ancestor of the tomato was the size of a pea. The Spanish introduced tomatoes to Europe by the mid 1500’s. The tomato was used in many Spanish dishes and was brought eventually to France, Italy and in northern Europe, where it was initially grown as an ornamental plant because it was a nightshade therefore considered poisonous like belladonna. The fear of the tomato was exacerbated by the interaction of the tomato acidic juice and the pewter plates. Leaves of the tomato contain tomatine which in large quantities would be toxic. The Aztecs raised several varieties of tomatoes, with red tomatoes called xictomati and green tomatoes called tomati(tomatillo). The Aztecs used tomatoes in their dishes and extensively cultivated the plant. The earliest reference to tomatoes being grown in British North America is from 1710, when herbalist William Salmon reported seeing them in what is today, South Carolina. They had been introduced from the Caribbean. By the mid-18th century, they were cultivated on some Carolina plantations and in other parts of the southeast. As they were thought to be poisonous, they were strictly grown as ornamentals. They began to be accepted as a food source when Thomas Jefferson ate French dishes while in Paris and decided to send seeds back to his plantation. Florida and California are the two largest producers of tomatoes in the U.S. due to their warm climates. So, now you know more about the wonderful tomato and why it is an integral part of every vegetable garden in our region.
