June Editorial Fathers’ Day – June 21st!

At our stage in life (I’ll just say 55+) 😊😊, it’s fun to reflect back on the many events of our lives, even as we create new memories. We were all children at one time, AND we all had mothers and fathers. Of these facts, I’m pretty sure. What those childhood family memories are vary widely to be sure. Hopefully, you have many warm memories of growing up.

The following are true stories about some standout fathers.

The Kids Who Turned a Bachelor into a Father Pittsburgh police detective Jack Mook was a self-proclaimed bachelor who loved the single life, doing whatever he wanted while off duty.

He often boxed at the gym, where he volunteered to teach local kids. He became particularly close to two brothers who came in almost every week for several years to learn from him. One day, the boys just stopped showing up—and Mook knew something was wrong.

Mook found the older brother, Josh, at his school and broke down when the boy explained the conditions they were living in at their foster home.

Through an emergency appeal, Mook decided to foster the boys and later went on to adopt them, finalizing the most important chapter in his life in 2014. Mook says the boys have changed his life. The self-proclaimed bachelor is not only the dad of two teenagers, he’s also happily married and has three stepchildren. After his

story went viral, women lined up to meet this ordinary superhero—and he married one of them.

The Legacy of a Father-Son Team: “Yes You Can” Rick Hoyt was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth after his umbilical cord became twisted around his neck, which caused the blockage of oxygen flow. As a result, his brain could not properly control his muscles. Many doctors encouraged the Hoyts to institutionalize Rick, informing them that he would likely remain in a vegetative state. His parents held on to the fact that Rick's eyes would follow them around the room, giving them hope that he would somehow be able to communicate. The Hoyts took Rick every week to Children's Hospital in Boston, where they met a doctor who encouraged the Hoyts to treat Rick like any other child. June Editorial spent hours each day teaching Rick the alphabet with sandpaper letters and posting signs on every object in the house. In a short amount of time, Rick learned the alphabet.

At the age of 11, after some persistence from his parents, Rick was fitted with a computer that enabled him to communicate, and it became clear that Rick was intelligent. With this communication device, Rick was also able to attend public schools for the first time.

Rick went on to graduate from Boston University in 1993 with a degree in special education. He later worked at Boston College in Prof. James Gips' EagleEyes Project computer lab helping to develop systems to aid in communication and other tasks for people with disabilities. Rick's unique approach to identifying words with verbal prompts was used as a basis for the Boston College EagleEyes project's communication software.

Team Hoyt began in 1977 when Rick asked his father if they could run in a race together to benefit a lacrosse player at his school who had become paralyzed. He wanted to prove that life went on no matter one's disability. Dick Hoyt, a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Air National Guard, was not a runner and was 36 years old.

After their first race Rick said, "Dad, when I'm running, it feels like I'm not handicapped."

After their initial five-mile run, Dick began running every day with a bag of cement in the wheelchair because Rick was at school and studying, unable to train with him. Dick was able to improve his fitness so much that even with pushing his son, he was able to obtain a personal record of a 5K run in 17 minutes.

Through March 2016, the Hoyts had competed in 1,130 endurance events, including 72 marathons and six Ironman Triathlons. They ran the Boston Marathon 32 times, between 1980 and 2014. Also adding to their list of achievements, Dick and Rick biked and ran across the U.S. in 1992, completing a full 3,735 miles (6,011 km) in 45 days.

For the swim portion of a triathlon, Dick used a rope attached to his body to pull Rick sitting in a boat. For the cycle portion, Rick rode on the front of a specially designed tandem bike. For the run portion, Dick pushed Rick in his wheelchair.

Dick Hoyt died in his sleep at his home in Holland, Massachusetts, on March 17, 2021, after experiencing some health problems. He was 80. Rick died from respiratory complications in Leicester, Massachusetts, on May 22, 2023. He was 61.

Honors: Team Hoyt was inducted to the Ironman Hall of Fame in 2008. On April 8, 2013, a bronze statue of Team Hoyt was unveiled near the Boston Marathon Starting Line in Hopkinton, Massachusetts.

ESPN honored Team Hoyt with the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPY Award show on July 17, 2013.

Millennium Memo The Senior Gleaners were back last month, picking fruit from the fertile fields of Palomar East.

This is one of my favorite SPARC-sponsored programs, as it not only feeds folks, but also helps residents who are unable to pick the fruit themselves.

Last year, the Gleaners collected 3,214 pounds of fruit. I thought that was a lot, but this year’s haul: 3,323 pounds, from just 32 homes in Palomar East & West, mostly Oranges, followed by Grapefruit, Tangerines, Tangelos & Lemons. That’s 1 ½ tons!

SPARC has two events in June: A Balance Workshop, with a Physical Therapist offering custom balance plans (June 17) and a Color Reading Class (June 23). In that one, you’ll create a work of art, then learn what your creation says about your personality.

Thanks again to Stacee & SPARC for bringing such a diversity of programs to the Park.

In Other News •

When we acquired Palomar East in 2003, we knew we wanted to remodel the Card Room. We didn’t forget. It only took 23 years, but the new-and-improved Card Room might be finished by the time you’re reading this.

We also have completed the Mailbox project as well as the Clubhouse Movie System upgrade. Your Rent Dollars at Work!

Residents really need to respect the Street Parking rules, especially regarding emergency access and the rule against “side by side” parking.

We’d hate to have to eliminate street parking altogether, but we can’t have emergency response affected. Your neighbors will appreciate your courtesy.

We’re getting calls about barking dogs. If yours is one of our more loquacious canines, please get him/her to stop. Some folks keep their TV showing Lassie re-runs, others use bark collars…whatever it takes to save your neighbors’ sanity.

By the way…how do dogs always know who’s barking? They have Collar ID.

Fun Father’s Day Memory Many years ago, my two daughters were in a school play together, so of course I wanted to attend. When I got to the reception table, I was asked: “Do you have any reservations?”

“Sure,” I replied. “But I want to see the play anyway.”

3 Summer is Nearly Here! Pool Rule Reminders • Guests must be accompanied by a resident.

• Children’s hours are from 11am–1pm and 4pm–6pm. Children under 3 years old or wearing diapers are not allowed in the pool due to health and safety requirements.

Diving, running, jumping, excessive noise, and roughhousing are not permitted.

• Noodles are allowed in the pool; however, flotation devices and rafts are not permitted due to limited space.

• Regular clothing is not permitted in the pool or jacuzzi. Swim attire only. Lint from clothing can damage and clog the filters.

June Rent Payments As we near the end of the park’s fiscal year, we ask that all residents pay the exact amount listed on their rent statement — no more and no less.

Patty and I are responsible for ensuring all resident balances are at $0.00 by the end of June.

Please also make sure the written amount on your check matches the numeric amount. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Income Certs Before long, it will be time for everyone to complete and return their annual Income Certification. This process is required to maintain the community’s low-income status

and helps protect residents from larger yearly rent increases.

When they are distributed, please complete and return your Income Cert to the office as soon as possible. These forms are time-sensitive, so your prompt attention is appreciated. Thank you for helping protect our community!

Maintenance Update Palm trees throughout the community were recently trimmed. Staff power washed the concrete and gazebo area surrounding the clubhouse patio. New concrete was added to expand the walkway around the new entrance to the card room and library. An additional light was installed along the walkway leading to the clubhouse and pool to improve evening visibility. Water leaks at Spaces 97 and 267 were repaired. Six new chairs were purchased for the dog park. Staff also began exterior repairs to the laundry room.

Home Sales Three (3) homes sold in the previous month.

Currently, two (2) homes are in escrow. In addition, there are five (5) homes listed for sale.

Website: www.peerasm.org Cardroom/Library Completion & a Brand New Name By the time you receive the June issue of The Breeze, the Cardroom/Library Remodel will have been completed.

We are very excited about these changes and trust that there will be many fun times in that room for our residents.

First, our thanks go to Millennium Housing and Haven Management Services. As always, they have inquired as what residents wanted in the remodel and supported various changes along the way in completing this project.

Second, we are appreciative of the work done by our Office Manager, Kasey Koenig, and our Maintenance Staff, led by Felipe Diaz. Their attention to detail is exemplary and appreciated.

This room has been called many things, depending on the activities held there: library, card room, quilting room, Bunco room, etc. Since these are all activities that occur in this room, as well as many more to come, this room will be designated the ‘ACTIVITIES ROOM.’

Ceramics Room Name Change During the Cardroom/Library Remodel, several updates were made in the ‘Ceramics Room.’ We look forward to a variety of craft opportunities in that room. For similar reasons, the name of the ‘Ceramics Room’ will be changed to ‘CRAFTS ROOM.’

Window Tinting Update Window tinting activities are continuing.

Following the window tinting in the new Activities Room, the upper windows of the clubhouse Main Room were tinted. Most recently, the spa area windows were tinted.

PEERA Bylaws Review and Comment At the February PEERA Board meeting held on Tuesday, February 3rd, the first six (6) Articles of the current (2016) PEERA Bylaws were compared to wording in the Proposed Revised 2026 Bylaws.

A second bylaws meeting was held on Saturday, May 16th at 1 pm in the main clubhouse to discuss the remaining Bylaws Articles and proposed revisions.

PEERA Members will be notified when the date for voting on the Proposed 2026 Bylaws is selected.

Next PEERA Board Meeting: Tuesday, June 2nd, 5:30 pm.

Our recipe this month was submitted by Patty Gonzales.

Father's Day lasagna in one skillet—amazing!

Easy recipes can deliver big flavor with minimal effort, ensuring you spend quality time together.

A simple salad and dessert allow for a stress-free, delicious celebration.

Step 2

2 cloves garlic, chopped

Add chicken stock, marinara, and tomatoes. Nestle pasta pieces in broth mixture and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, 4 minutes. Uncover and continue simmering, stirring occasionally, until pasta is tender, 10 to 12 minutes.

2 cups chicken stock

Step 3

2 cups marinara sauce

Remove from heat and fold in basil. Top with ricotta, mozzarella, and Parmesan. Broil until golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes.

Ingredients 1 Tbsp. olive oil 1 lb. sweet Italian sausage, casings removed

1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, drained 8 oz. lasagna noodles, broken into large pieces 2/3 cup fresh basil, roughly chopped, plus more for garnish 1/3 cup ricotta 4 oz. mozzarella, coarsely grated (about 1 cup) 2 Tbsp. grated Parmesan cheese

Preparation Step 1 Preheat broiler. Heat oil in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Add sausage and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until beginning to brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, 1 minute.

June 5th (Friday) – Social/Happy Hour, at 5:30 pm Please plan to join us for our monthly Social/Happy hour on June 5th at 5:30 pm. You all seemed to enjoy the baked potato bar so much that we are bringing it back (see pg. 10)!

Sign-up sheets are posted on the Social Club bulletin board to capture attendance and to organize those of you bringing toppings and sides.

We are also raffling off 4 beautiful patriotic quilts at the Social/Happy hour on June 5th.

These quilts were made by the Quilting Club.

Please check out the flyer in The Breeze (see pg. 11) for more details about the event and pictures of the quilts.

June 9th (Tuesday) – Movie Night, 5 pm Please join us on Tuesday, June 9th, for movie night in the Clubhouse! Our new Monthly Movie Committee has selected the film Song Sung Blue for us to screen. This musical drama released in 2025 is based on the true story of a Milwaukee couple who found love and success as a Neil Diamond tribute band.

Showtime is at 5 pm. The movie run-time is 2 hours and 12 minutes. We will be providing popcorn and soda, but you are welcome to bring your own meal or snacks to enjoy during the showing.

Song Sung Blue (2025) (PG13) is a biographical musical drama starring Huge Jackman and Kate Hudson as Mike and Claire Sardina, a real-life couple who found success as a Neil Diamond tribute band called “Lightning & Thunder” in Wisconsin. The film follows their love story, career highs, and personal struggles, including a life-altering accident.

And yes, Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman really sing in the movie Song Sung Blue. They perform live-recorded vocals, including Neil Diamond covers like “Cherry, Cherry”.

If you plan to attend, please RSVP on the SignUp sheet posted on the Social Club bulletin board. This helps us ensure that we have enough seating and snacks for everyone.

Social Club June 11th (Thursday) – Social Club General Meeting, 3 pm The next General meeting of the Social Club Board will be held on June 11th at 3:00 pm in the Clubhouse. This meeting is open to all residents.

In addition to general club information and event planning, we will discuss changes to the Social Club bylaws and answer your questions about how those changes will impact the community.

If you need a paper copy of the bylaws, please put your written request (including your name and space number) in the Social Club mailbox in the Clubhouse. We will deliver copies no later than one week before the meeting.

June 20th (Saturday) – Joke Day, 1-3 pm Join our neighbors and friends from 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm on Saturday, June 20th, for our second Laughter is the Best Medicine event (aka Tell-aJoke Day). Bring your favorite funny stories, anecdotes, and dad-jokes to spend an afternoon tickling your funny bone! We will be serving ice cream treats along with non-alcoholic beverages.

Learning the names of your neighbors, offering help with chores on occasion, sharing

food, being present during difficult times, or sending a handwritten note or text to brighten someone’s day – all these are kindnesses that foster connection and make a neighborhood feel like home.

The key: Intentionality. Plan it. Do it.

The Welk farmers market includes some produce stalls, but it mostly features unique food vendors specializing in specific items such as tamales, cannoli, exotic cheeses, mead, wine, dips, and cooking oils to name a few. The barbecue rotisserie serves amazing meat & poultry (with potatoes or veggies).

The venue includes table and chairs, couches, and lounge type areas to sit, relax, and enjoy a picnic. …All of this just 12 miles from Palomar Estates East.
