WORDS
Mary Lou Parisi
On The Borders and Boundaries

The dictionary defines them as: A border is a line separating two countries or states, while a boundary is a broader term referring to a line that marks the limits of an area, which could be a property, or a figurative line like a personal boundary. Essentially, a border is a specific type of boundary. It can be marked by physical features (like rivers or mountains) or by artificial markers (like fences or walls). A Boundary encompasses borders but includes lines defining areas like properties, rooms, or personal limits. They can be physical (like a fence) or non-physical (like a rule). Includes concepts like personal boundaries (limits on personal interactions) and professional boundaries (limits on behavior in a work setting). Physical, mental and spiritual borders and boundaries are part of living happy and healthy lives in our world. What is consistent is they all are meant to either keep things in or out. They provide safety and security. Borders and boundaries keep us centered and help us not go astray. They are important to society and individuals whether you realize it or not. We protect our homes with our locks, alarms and fences etc. We keep our thoughts within a mental border. Spiritual borders help us practice our faith by the principles or doctrines they teach. We control our speech with boundaries of what we say and to whom to say them too. We don’t let every thought come out of our mouth or purposely hurt others. We should always be telling the truth and if we make promises, we should keep them. When you break a promise or tell a lie, it can have devasting consequences. We teach our children these things, so they grow into responsible, moral adults. Our borders and boundaries help discipline us, so we don’t have to learn things “the hard way.” It is a learned behavior. To enjoy a healthy society or relationship, the sooner you establish borders and boundaries the better off you will be. Whenever there are not clear borders and boundaries, confusion and misunderstandings will surely follow.

I have observed that in today’s society some are under the impression that any border or boundary is oppressive, unfair, even cruel and not in line with our rights in this country. Our physical boundaries and borders are for safety and security for keep ourselves and our family. You don’t want little children wandering off and certainly don’t want strangers able to get in. Sadly, it is not a perfect world and there are people with bad intentions you don’t want to encounter. Personal boundaries are needed and should be established in all our relationships, especially with your spouse or partner. If you don’t have clear boundaries, the relationship will surely break down. If you take marriage vows and they are broken, the family suffers or dissolves. That has lifelong devastating consequences. Spiritual boundaries & borders can be an important part of your life and society if you practice your faith. Living in the United States where there is freedom of religion, each faith and person needs to have borders and boundaries to be able to express their faith without any interference. There are numerous buildings and diverse practices that should all be accepted. At least that’s the way it is supposed to work here. Some faiths experience harassment and disrespect. Ultimately, the physical, mental, spiritual borders and boundaries we decide to adopt should help make our country, state, city, neighbors and family the best society for all. Like I said, in a perfect world, you would not need any borders or boundaries, however, here in the USA and Lake Park Yorba Linda, we still have the best system.

Cathee Miller Board President

We made it through July, it did get hot, but it is only the beginning of summer. Enjoy the summer weather, go walking, swimming, or just go out and enjoy yourselves. Meet your neighbors and pet all the dogs in the park.
Wasn't the Luaujust wonderful. The food was great and also the dancers. Our next party will be August 16th , an evening party, so make plans to join us for great entertainment and good food. Lake Park’s favorite entertainer will be back to sing, dance and entertain us. Can you guess who?

Stay well and drink a lot of water to keep hydrated. See you around and say Hello.

Sciatica: A Common Painful Condition
Sciatica is a common condition in the United States, affecting around 40 percent of the population at some point in their lives, with around 10 percent of those with lower back pain specifically having sciatica. Sciatica is a painful collection of symptoms involving the sciatic nerves the body’s largest nerves. Sciatica occurs when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated, leading to pain, numbness, or weakness that travels along its path.
These nerves, which can be as wide as a finger, are formed from spinal nerve roots in the lower back & run from the lower spine through the hip, buttock, & leg to the back of the knee, where they branch & extend to the foot. The sciatic nerves control leg movement & sensation, so when they become compressed, inflamed, or damaged, they can cause pain & abnormal sensations, such as tingling or numbness.
What Are Symptoms and Early Signs
The first sign of sciatica is usually pain that starts in the lower back or buttocks & radiates along the sciatic nerve’s path down one leg. Although it feels like the pain is coming from the sciatic nerve in the buttock, it most often stems from an irritated nerve in the lower spine.
Primary Symptoms
Sciatica symptoms can vary widely in intensity & presentation, but they most often follow a recognizable pattern. Below are the most common signs people experience:
Pain Triggers and Aggravating Factors
• Sciatica pain may worsen with:
• Sitting for long periods
• Standing for extended periods
• Sneezing, coughing, or laughing
• Bending backward
• Walking long distances
• Climbing stairs
• Straining during bowel movements
What Causes Sciatica?
Sciatica is best understood as a grouping of symptoms rather than a specific injury or disease. It can stem from various underlying causes, that affects or puts pressure on the sciatic nerve. Common causes include Herniated disc, Spinal stenosis, Degenerative disc disease, Piriformis syndrome, Bone or muscle injuries.
What Are Natural & Lifestyle Approaches
A range of natural remedies, self-care strategies, & lifestyle modifications can play an important role in managing sciatica symptoms. Exercise; Tai chi & yoga; Massage Therapy; Muscle relaxation; Improved circulation; Physical therapy; Medications; Activity management; Surgeries; Acupuncture; Chiropractic care

• Pain: Typically affects one side of the body & can range from mild tingling or a dull ache to sharp, burning pain or electric shock-like jolts
• Numbness: Occurs in leg, calf, or sole of the foot
• Muscle weakness: Appears in the affected leg
• Abnormal sensations: Includes tingling, pins & needles, or intense hot or cold sensations
• Muscle spasms: Occur in the lower back or leg
Mindset plays a crucial role in how people experience & manage sciatica. A negative mindset—can heighten the perception of pain & increase muscle tension, which may worsen symptoms. In some cases, having a negative mindset may increase the risk of chronic pain. Conversely, a positive & proactive mindset can support better outcomes. People who remain optimistic, follow treatment plans, & stay active are often better equipped to manage symptoms & recover more quickly.
How Can I Prevent Sciatica?
Prevention largely depends on the underlying cause, Prolonged Pressure; Exercise; Posture; & Proper Lifting Techniques are several general strategies that can help reduce the risk of sciatica.
