WORDS
Mother’s Day is over and this month we celebrate Father's Day. I started to think Why doesn’t Father’s Day get the same elevation as Mother’s Day? Everybody has a father, but especially over the last century, in many homes, a biological father is sadly missing. The increase in divorce usually results in the father moving out & the mother having full or part-time custody of the children. Since the 1960’s sexual revolution, Civil Rights Movement & Great Society, many believe it inadvertently disincentivized marriage & encouraged single-parent households, leading to a rise in divorce & out-of-wedlock births.
Now if you watch a television show or commercial, the father is often portrayed as not too bright and/or a laughing stock to the rest of the family. Traditionally the father was looked up to, a strong leader of the family, the breadwinner & the authority figure. Women were traditionally the homemaker, & the full-time child caretakers. Somehow it was all turned around…roles of women and men were equal, and fathers were diminished if they were still in the home. Usually if there was a divorce the father was not a part of their children’s life, mostly they were seen as a bad influence which was true in many cases. I agree that there are many good reasons that a father is not and should not be in the home to raise their children.

DAD

Mary Lou Parisi

A son’s first Hero A daughter’s first love.

For most families that still have a good father or stepfather in the home, they should be honored & not just on Father’s Day. If you didn’t have a good father or an absent one, you missed out on this important relationship. I hope you thank God if you did have a good one, but don’t stay stuck lamenting if you weren’t that lucky. You can’t change the past but what you can do is move on with your life & be the best father (or mother) you can be & remember that no one has a perfect Father or Mother. Leave a good legacy for your children. Personally, my biological father passed away when I was 4 years old and my older brother was 7 years old. I don’t have any real memories of him, but I know from everyone in the family that he was a good man, & I was loved by him. I did get a good stepfather when I was 10 years old, so I am thankful for that. Father's Day originated in Spokane, Washington, inspired by Sonora Smart Dodd's admiration for her widowed father, William Smart, who raised her and her siblings. In 1909, Dodd proposed a special day to honor fathers, inspired by a Mother's Day sermon. The first official Father's Day celebration was held in Spokane on June 19, 1910. Dodd, raised by her single father after her mother's death, was deeply grateful for his dedication and Father's Day was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1972 by President Richard Nixon
Some fun facts about Father’s Day
Fathers are needed, they are different from mothers. They look different, they sound different, they play in a different way, & they usually have a different approach to raising children than a mother does, and that's a good thing. A boy learns from his father, without even realizing it, what a man is and does. He learns about masculinity, what men like & don't like. Many adult men report that they either wanted to be "just like my dad" or wanted to be his exact opposite. Daughters look up to their Fathers as their first love & have a special bond. Fathers have a powerful influence on their growing children, & it begins from the moment of birth. These are generalizations, but most have stood the test of time.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the necktie is the most popular of all Father's Day gifts.
• The origin of the word dad may simply be baby talk. Dada meaning Father.
• There are 1.5 billion fathers worldwide.
• Father's Day is celebrated on the 3rd Sunday of June every year throughout the world.
• Washington was the first state to celebrate Father's Day.
If you still have your father, stepfather, spiritual father or any man that has filled that role in your life, remember and honor them this Father’s Day.

It’s always a great time when Tony O’Dell Rogers comes to Lake Park.

I read this touching account of Jay Leno’s caregiving of his wife with dementia. As we all grow older, we will all have some experience with this.

It is one thing to be a caregiver. It is something else entirely to be a caregiver for your spouse. Just ask Jay Leno. The former Tonight Show host discussed his new role as caregiver for his wife of 45 years, Mavis, at length on the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast. The comedian, 74, filed for conservatorship over his wife in January 2024, following a dementia diagnosis. Humor can be helpful, the comedian said of being a caregiver for someone with dementia.
“When you get married, you sort of take a vow: ‘Will I live up to this? Or will I be, like, a sleazy guy [where] if something happens to my wife, I’m out banging the cashier at the mini mart?’” Leno said to Bensinger. “No, I didn’t. I enjoy the time with my wife. I go home, I cook dinner for her, watch TV, and it’s OK.” Leno described how he has taken over many activities of daily living for his wife. “When you have to feed someone and change them, carry them to the bathroom, and do all that kind of stuff every day. It’s a challenge,” he said. “And it’s not that I enjoy doing it, but I guess I enjoy doing it.” The Jay Leno’s Garage star noted that he and Mavis, 78, now use flash cards to review memories together. “It’s kind of fun,” he said. “I go, ‘Honey, that’s President Obama. Remember we had dinner?’ [She’ll say], ‘Oh, not me.’ [And I’ll say], ‘Yeah, honey, that was you!’” “You have to find the humor in it,” he added. "I think that's really what defines a marriage. I mean, that's really what love is. That's what you do." The former late-night host said he's proud he stayed the course.
TROPICAL VACATIONS RIGHT HERE IN CALIFORNIA
A resident shared this. After they found the Kon Tiki Inn in Pismo Beach, California, they stopped going to Hawaii. We loved it here and have gone back every year for the last 40 years. Right on the ocean, no crowds and a few hours drive from Yorba Linda.
