LIGHT UP YOUR WORLD
Mary Lou Parisi

It’s the most wonderful time of the year for LIGHTS. Wherever you go there are lights adorning homes, businesses, trees anything you can string a light on. There are parades with boats, Christmas tree lighting ceremonies and whole neighborhoods that take lights to an ethereal level. Since it gets dark so ear help dispel some of the darkness. For some people, the long nights and holidays can bring sadness remembering happier days of the past. Having festive lights all around can bring joy to the soul. I started to wonder; how did all this get started? Is it strictly from religious origins? I found out there are so many different traditions having to do with string, twinkle, fairy or festive lights. In our world now, decorating with lights has become a significant undertaking. The most common symbol of decorative lights has to do with the Christmas holiday that we observe in December. Some like to get an early start on their lights and have them up and running before Thanksgiving. There is something magical about the atmosphere with twinkling lights, celebrating the divine. Christmaslights symbolize hope, joy, and the victory of light over darkness, and for Christians, they represent Jesus Christ, the “LightoftheWorld.” The tradition of lights began with candles on German Christmas trees in the 1600’s and has since evolved into modern electric lights. It is also a symbol of the Star of Bethlehem. The lights can remind people to be lightstoothersby helping them. In other religions, lights play a significant role. The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah , eight-day Festival of Lights, connects with Christmas in that they are both celebrations of light over darkness. A menorah is a candelabra that is used during this festival. In India they have a month long Festival of Lights called Diwali . There are also secular and cultural symbolisms of lights. The tradition of using lights dates back to ancient times when fire and lights symbolized hope and warmth during the dark winter months. The WinterSolsticetradition is linked to celebrating the return of light. Lights are a festive and joyful marker of the season, bringing people together and creating a sense of community.
The first outdoor electric Christmas lights were displayed by Thomas Edison in 1880, making the tradition safer and more accessible. Red and Green are the most common colors used in the season but also Blue, Gold and White. Here, Lake Park is beautifully decorated with lights during the holidays. It’s so nice to pull in here and not only see the decorations and lights around the lake but throughout the park are many nicely decorated homes. Below is a couple of nearby Tree Lighting Activities to enjoy with others.

Sparkle Ball Lane in Fullerton, off Chapman and Yale Street is A neighborhood transformed into a glimmering paradise, where every home becomes a canvas for festive lights and community artistry. They are Uniquely decorated with lights called Sparkle Balls. If you haven’t been, Go this year!
The Disney Grand Californian Hotel is especially nice to visit during the holidays. It features extensive Christmas decorations, including a large, themed Christmas tree and a life-sized gingerbread house in the main lobby. Decorations also extend to balconies and walkways. Carolers walk around. You might even visit Santa. Downtown Disney is nice to walk around decorated for the holidays. Free, except for parking

Knott’s Merry Farm is transforming the park for the holiday season with festive decorations, shows, food, and activities. The event features holiday entertainment, a Christmas Crafts Village, Santa's Christmas Cabin, a new Christmas Tree centerpiece, and special holiday treats. This is not free though. It requires admission to the park.
Finally, Go ahead and decorate your own home and tree with lights. It will make your soul happy! With so many things to see let your inner light SHINE wherever you go. Wishing you all a lovely, peaceful season of light as we close out the year 2025. It went so fast. May 2026 be a happy, healthy, blessed year for you and all your loved ones and our friends and neighbors here in Lake Park.
