MONDAY MAY 26th,
Smoke Detector Installations Bring Safety to La Siesta Village
On March 29th, Red Cross volunteers visited La Siesta Village with one mission: saving lives through fire safety. In partnership with the community, they installed smoke detectors in 21 homes—completely free of charge. Each smoke detector installed is valued at approximately $50 and comes with a 10-year warranty, offering residents peace of mind and long-term protection. This initiative is part of the Red Cross’s ongoing commitment to fire prevention and safety awareness. If you missed the event and would like to have smoke detectors installed in your home, contact your local fire department. They can assist you in obtaining new detectors and ensuring your home is protected.

Smoke detectors save lives—make sure your home is covered!

BOCCEBALL @LaSiesta AComprehensiveGuide

By Bonnie Baham

La Siesta Village Social Club has purchased a Bocce Ball Set which is being stored at the clubhouse and available to be reserved by any resident here. The Bocce Balls are being stored in metal containers in the back patio of the clubhouse. The game can be set up in the Horseshoe area. Bocce ball is a game of strategy, precision, and camaraderie, making it a favorite pastime for many. Whether played casually in the backyard or competitively in a league, bocce offers a wonderful way to enjoy time with friends and family.
History of Bocce Ball
Bocce ball, one of the oldest sports in history, traces its origins to ancient civilizations. The game was played in its early form by the Egyptians, Romans, and Greeks. The modern version of bocce we know today was developed in Italy, where it became a beloved pastime. It's believed that the game spread rapidly across Europe during the Roman Empire. Over centuries, bocce has evolved and grown in popularity worldwide, becoming a staple in many cultures and communities.
Bocce Teams
In bocce ball, teams can vary in size, typically ranging from two to four players. Each team competes to roll their bocce balls as close as possible to a smaller target ball known as the "jack" or "Pallino." Teamwork and strategy are essential in bocce, as players must coordinate their throws and anticipate their opponents' moves. Teams can be formed casually among friends and family or organized formally in leagues and tournaments.
Bocce Court
A standard bocce court measures approximately 27.5 meters in length and 2.5 to 4 meters in width. The surface of the court can be made of various materials, including dirt, grass, or artificial turf. Boundaries are clearly marked, and the court is divided into different sections to facilitate fair play. Players take turns throwing their balls from a designated area at one end of the court, aiming for the Pallino placed at the far end. The type of set that we have at La Siesta is French, called a pétanque.
Bocce Balls
Bocce balls are spherical and typically made of wood, plastic, or metal. Each player has a set of balls, usually in different colors or markings to distinguish them from their opponents'. The balls are designed to be durable and easy to handle, weighing between 900 grams to 1.1 kilograms. The Pallino is smaller, often white, and serves as the target for bocce throws.
Object of Bocce Ball
The primary objective of bocce ball is to score points by placing your team's balls closer to the Pallino than your opponents' balls. After all the balls are thrown, the team whose ball is closest to the Pallino scores a point for each of their balls closer than the nearest ball of the opposing team. The game continues until a team reaches the pre-determined number of points, usually 12 or 15, to win the match or a predeterminate time limit.

Simple Rules of Bocce Ball
Bocce ball is governed by straightforward rules that make it accessible to players of all ages. Here are some of the fundamental rules:
Each team gets four balls to throw per round.
The game starts with a coin toss to determine who throws the Pallino first.
The Pallino must be thrown past the center of the court but not beyond the far boundary line.
Players take turns throwing their bocce balls, trying to get as close to the Pallino as possible.
A ball must be thrown underhand and rolled rather than thrown like a baseball.
Points are awarded at the end of each round based on the proximity of the balls to the Pallino.
Games typically end when a team reaches 12 or 15 points or a predetermined time limit.
There is also Bocce Ball Court and games played at the senior center on Jefferson St. Go out and learn to play and have fun.

You see, it's never the environment; it's never the events of our lives, but the meaning we attach to the events, and how we interpret them that shapes who we are today and who we'll become tomorrow.
Anthony Robbins, life strategist
Lady Luck generally woos those who earnestly, enthusiastically, unremittingly woo her.

Love means to love that which is unlovable, or it is no virtue at all. Forgiving means to pardon that which is unpardonable, or it is no virtue at all.

I don't believe professional athletes should be role models. I believe parents should be role models.... It's not like it was when I was growing up. My mom and my grandmother told me how it was going to be. If I didn't like it, they said, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on your way out." Parents have to take better control.
Charles Barkley
There is no such thing as can't, only won't. If you're qualified, all it takes is a burning desire to accomplish, to make a change. Go forward, go backward. Whatever it takes! But you can't blame other people or society in general. It all comes from your mind. When we do the impossible, we realize we are special people.
Jan Ashford, Australian consultant You don't have to take life the way it comes to you. You can design your life to come to you the way you want it.
Dan Zadra, communications authority
I believe life is a series of near misses. A lot of what we ascribe to luck is not luck at all. It's seizing the day and accepting responsibility for your future. It's seeing what their people don't see and pursuing that vision.

Camping with Holmes and Watson
Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson were on a camping trip. They had gone to bed and were lying awake looking up at the sky. Holmes said: "Watson, look up. What do you see?"
"I see thousands of stars," he said. "And what does that mean to you?" Holmes continued.
"I suppose it means we will have another nice day tomorrow. What does it mean to you, Holmes?"
"To me, Watson, it means someone has stolen our tent."

Whoops...
Hospital regulations require a wheelchair for patients being discharged. But a student nurse, found one gentleman dressed and sitting on the bed. He insisted he didn't need a wheel chair.
After a chat about rules, he reluctantly let the nurse wheel him to the elevator. On the way down I asked him if his wife was meeting him.
"I don't know. She's upstairs in the bathroom changing out of her hospital gown."
