Racewear reign

image: Auckland Thoroughbred Racing

Danni Alfeld attended her first Cup Day at three weeks old. Was becoming New Zealand’s most fashionable racegoer her destiny all along? Metropol editor Nina Tucker finds out.

New Zealand’s best is Canterbury’s own – Danni Alfeld took out The Ned Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie in March. Her winning look was a striking bronze pantsuit, divine and daring. “It jumped out at me when I first saw it.” Styled with custom millinery from Australian Jill Humphries and accessories sourced nationwide, including Dyrberg/Kern jewellery, the look was boundary-pushing yet ever so beautiful and a clear winner. It’s customary to spend months, years even, curating raceday fashion, let alone the winning look. In the two years since her first competition, Danni has risen to the highest ranks.

“The challenge is developing new styles, di erent looks, and pushing the boundaries while remaining true to myself,” she tells me. Among a roll of esteemed competitors – regardless of intensity – Danni says the only pressure is her own. A born and bred Cantabrian, she took home Best Contemporary Dressed and Supreme Winner at Riccarton Park’s The Ned Fashion in the Field in November 2024. This landed her a spot in a pressure-mounting 20th edition of Ellerslie’s contest. Planning ensued fast, and with mother Janine, the pair spent hours paging magazines, scrolling Pinterest, and searching for online inspiration “to find something that was di erent, bold but fun and unexpected,” she shares.

“Mum and I are always on the lookout for the next outfit inspiration.” If finding a beautiful cut of fabric inspires her first, Danni and Janine then determine the style to suit. Sometimes, the pair fall in love with a picture and source the fabric that will bring the vision to life next. Danni credits her dressmaker, Mikhal Designs, as a defining power in her racewear journey, coupled with her own keen eye in an opportunity shop, repurposing various accessories. In many cases, millinery and accessories deduct precious hours from the process. At no surprise, it’s mum to the rescue. “Mum has developed her skills in painting shoes, handbags, earrings, and more recently, making fabulous hats after attending a great millinery course,” Danni says.

The marriage of many components saw her achieve at Ellerslie. “I was in shock when my name was called out,” Danni exclaims –sharing a visual record to prove it. “I was so ecstatic and surprised, it took quite a few days to sink in.” She shared winning bottles of The Ned wine with friends and family, and awaits adventures to Auckland and Marlborough to enjoy other prizes.

Reflecting on her success, Danni nods to the feedback o ered by judges in her first season of racewear events. “I took on board feedback given to me and incorporated this into my next season’s looks by altering the colours, accessories, or overall look.” This willingness from judges to share has been fundamental for her growth. “Judges have always been positive and provided encouragement on my fashion journey. They have so much expertise and knowledge.”

No better authority to corroborate Danni’s words is Riccarton Park’s Fashion Coordinator Zane Tate: “I’m so proud of Danni, our Riccarton Park representative and Cantabrian, for winning The Ned Prix de Fashion. From her Best Dressed triumph at Riccarton Park Cup Day 2024 to listening intently to every piece of feedback from the judges, she’s honed a distinctive, confident style in record time. Her passion, dedication, and creative spirit embody everything we celebrate in Fashion in the Field.”

Danni’s destiny

“I attended my first Cup Day at just three weeks old,” Danni remembers, sharing the story of a life and childhood spent embedded in the horse racing industry. Her entry into horse showing began at four years old and never stopped – now complemented through training standardbred racehorses alongside her father. Watching horses race, or showing them herself, Danni is tied to nothing closer, and forever grateful for the community it brings. “The racing industry is very supportive of each other. If you don’t win, you are glad to congratulate the people that do.”

In her short time competing, Danni delights in seeing the Canterbury racing fashion scene evolve. “Looks now embrace both the traditional, classic outfit and the more contemporary fashion wear. Traditionally, it was seen as more conservative – however this is now not the case.”

Wearing an outfit of great intricacies, no racing fashion competitor wants to miss any aspect of it on the entry form. While it didn’t stop her from gaining a degree in musculoskeletal systems, Danni says her dyslexia ignites creativity, “it is not so good for completing entry forms,” she laughs. “I always have a description of my outfit prepared to take to the fashion event.”

Morghan Ariki Bradshaw creates a ‘second skin’ for people who wear her clothes. With a newly-launched space in the heart of the city, the Ōtautahi designer catches up with Metropol editor Nina Tucker ahead

of her fashion show at Majestic on Durham come 24 May.

Morghan Bradshaw’s favourite thing about Ōtautahi is the people within it. Her fashion brand, FUGAWI, is a beautifully amalgamated construct of all those it meets. Whether in her corner or not, a person’s energy is what guides each piece. “I feel people, I learn their stories,” Morghan explains on creating custom garments.

Translating the same experience she o ers through clothing – emotional freedom, and a sense of self-connection – into a physical space was Morghan’s goal. When her fashion tutor Nathan Ingram introduced her to The Crossing’s centre manager Ashling Mullins, it opened the door that would soon help Morghan open hers. Bringing it to life quicker than anticipated, Morghan says having the studio is yet to sink in. “I’m still processing it all. It’s incredible having a space right in the city centre – right in front of people who might not usually cross paths with the brand.”

It was a similar matter when dressing singer Stan Walker for his music videos, which catapulted Morghan’s name into the media and the minds of many. “Collaborating with Stan has opened more doors for FUGAWI than I could’ve imagined. What means the most is seeing others believe in the dream I’ve held onto for so long,” Morghan says, even if it coming true has taught sizeable lessons along the way.

O ering a tangible creative outlet where people can feel at home was on the top of Morghan’s wishlist. “Creating a space I wish I had growing up is pretty much the dream of FUGAWI. A place where I feel like I fit and can genuinely be myself… where people could come as they are, be themselves and feel good. Fashion is just a tool for me to do that,” she explains. “My whole life I’ve been somewhat misunderstood. Seen as too deep, emotional, sensitive, and intense” – Morghan’s ADHD heightens her creativity but at a cost.

Morghan credits her tutor and friend Bridget for the label she gives her brand, ‘narrative

couture’ – sartorial creations that encapsulate a message or experience. “I think that’s why so many people fall in love with FUGAWI once they experience a piece because often they’re not really resonating with the piece itself but more so the story that piece holds.” Influenced by her Cook Islands Māori, Chinese, and Pākehā heritage, Morghan’s designs are rich in “identity, energy, connection, appreciation and everything in between”.

In our conversation, I likened Morghan’s fashion philosophy to an adored quote from Miuccia Prada: “What you wear is how you present yourself to the world… Fashion is instant language.” That same analogy is the driving force behind everything FUGAWI. “When I create, it really is as though I am making someone’s second skin,” Morghan says. “[With fashion] you get to choose your second skin, to represent you, how you feel, what you want people to see. You feel it when you are in the street minding your own and see someone that stands out or gets your attention. They are speaking to you.”

The booklover’s destination

Whether it’s Adult Fiction, NonFiction, New Zealand, Religion, Classics, Poetry, Young Adult or Children’s tales, we will have just what you want.

How does each garment materalise? “It starts with a story or narrative, then becomes a drawing. Then I let the fabric lead me,” Morghan shares, adding that often she designs with a model in mind despite her work fitting multiple body shapes.

Morghan’s day-to-day was less chaotic before her space came to life in The Crossing. Beginning at 5.30am, her daily agenda would consist of a workout, shower, breakfast, “flip my room upside down trying to find something to wear”, snuggles with her dogs, and a full day at the factory. Don’t forget to squeeze in an iced oat caramel latte. Life lately? “The past three weeks I have not made the gym because I’m usually at The Crossing until security kicks me out at midnight. Prepping for my show on 24 May is hectic,” she laughs. Unable to switch the FUGAWI button o , Morghan is seeking out the future she’s always knew was possible. The curation of a legendary career

The work of esteemed contemporary Māori sculptor, the late Fred Graham, is being showcased in Toi Whakaata / Reflections, an exhibition coming to Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū in late May.

Atouring exhibition provides a rare opportunity for Ōtautahi to see wood, stone and steel sculpture works made by a legend of Aotearoa New Zealand art.

Called Toi Whakaata / Reflections, the exhibition celebrates the life’s work of esteemed contemporary Māori sculptor Fred Graham (Ngāti Korokī Kahukura, Tainui), who sadly passed away on 9 May this year.

Fred was celebrated at the opening of the show in June last year when it was first presented by Te Uru Waitākere Contemporary Gallery, where the exhibition was developed. A pioneer of the contemporary Māori art movement in the 1960s and 70s, Fred – together with several other artist-educators, including Sir Cli Whiting and Ralph Hotere – explored how traditional Māori art could be contemporised by drawing from European modernist styles. Fred’s large-scale public commission sculptures can be found nationwide.

The exhibition features works made between 1965 and 2013, showcasing eight relief works, or wall-based carvings, and five freestanding sculptures. For the Ōtautahi show, an additional stainless steel sculpture from the Art Institute art collection, Rangi me Papi, will be featured.

Commenting on his father’s legacy, Brett Graham said: “Māori contemporary artists made visible an indigenous landscape that was buried under layers of colonial infrastructure and buildings, and seldom acknowledged. For all of his works, this is the first port of call, acknowledging this depth of history.”

Toi Whakaata / Reflections opens at Christchurch Art Gallery Te Puna o Waiwhetū on 31 May, with an introductory talk at 11am, showing until 5 October 2025.

in out The in outerwear

This weather has us feeling like Goldilocks, scrambling to find a gorgeous layer not too hot nor cold.

Asartorial metaphor – we search for something lighter than a coat yet more protective of the elements than knitwear. Thankfully, designers and stylists have determined what’s in and out of outwear for the season ahead, so we can track down that ‘just right’ layer.

Recent runway-approved reports of the favourite outer layers for the coming months include bombers, quilted pu ers, classic blazers, sporty anoraks, countryside-chic styles, capes, and turtleneck creations. Locally, the leading styles have filtered through from international trends to local fashion – you will find a plethora of bombers, blazers, and quilted pu ers in stores. As for the other worldwide favourites? We’ll have to wait and see.

Simple is out, expressionism is in – however that looks for you. Patterns and textures intrigue the eye, while intricate details add depth and a form of escapism from the basic jacket. Hourglass silhouettes are slowly entering the outerwear movement, dominated by oversized styles in recent seasons. Bomber jackets and tailored blazers craft a cinched shape, paired with fitted pants. A global shift towards cropped jacket and outerwear styles is looming, yet the local landscape remains focused heavily on more sweeping, longline styles.

Drama screams in colour schemes, with floral-inspired summer colours stepping aside for rich, moody hues such as burgundy, navy and chocolate brown. These are best paired with neutral shades for a balanced look.

Charmer

CURATED BY NINA TUCKER

Decoration, customisation – Jane Birkin forever cemented the concept that your handbag should be an expressive extension of your personality.

The actress, model, singer, and muse’s bag was a metaphor for a life well lived, overflowing with daily essentials and practical accessories. With waves made and bags dutifully decorated in the last few international seasons, the trend has finally reached our stores. A playful ri on high-low dressing, it asks you to adorn your bag with charms, trinkets and textures to showcase your character and elicit an ounce of joy. Nostalgic, elegant, miss-matched – let your personality shine.

Start with a classic carry-all or your favourite handbag, layering on a chic charm, a silk scarf, and a whimsy keychain or three.

HELP, HOW DO I STYLE THE…?

PUFFER

BOMBER

Labelled by Vogue as “the outerwear gift that keeps on giving”, bombers are a locked-in style for the season ahead. Layer the transitional favourite over a chunky knit with jeans and slingbacks for a casual look, or level it up with tailored pants or a flowing skirt and pumps – letting the cinchstyle carve out your silhouette.

One of the most enduring staples in our winter wear arsenal, the pu er comes in an array of styles, patterns and textures making it a versatile classic. Pair yours with loose-leg pants to avoid the awkward proportions that sometimes come from drowning in down. The best advice? Don’t do them up unless it’s truly cold.

BLAZER

Layer with essential basics, neutral or vibrant in colour, relying on jewellery and a statement belt for the glam factor. An anchor to any outfit – business or casual – a classic blazer extends beyond workwear. Add a chic scarf around your collar for an old money aesthetic.

Is this a skincare skin cure?

Are you targeting multiple skin conditions – collagen production and elasticity, wrinkles, blemishes, fine lines, sun damage, pigmentation – with a long list of products? LED therapy and the subsequent viral LED masks are a trending alternative. The question is, can this technology tackle it all in one treatment?

Light emitting diode (LED) therapy is a relatively new treatment adopted in clinics and within home skincare regimens, yet researchers from Harvard Medical School say evidence of safety is not quite there yet. With growing popularity, suspicions arise – is LED therapy all it’s cracked up to be? Does a dermatologist-approved treatment beat the ease of an at-home mask you can wear while watching television?

What is it?

LED therapy is the process where various wavelengths of light are emitted to treat a range of skin concerns through in-clinic technology, a mask, or a spot-treatment wand. Red light therapy boosts collagen and elastin production, enhancing the skin’s natural defense mechanism to repair and promote skin that is plumper and more even. To target acne-causing bacteria, pigmentation, and sun damage, experts recommend blue light therapy.

Without the invasiveness of some beauty treatments, experts say LED therapy is a popular option – given your device, or clinic of choice, adheres to correct standards.

Is it safe?

Of course, there is a catch. Most beauty treatments and technologies present risks and should be practised with caution and professionalism – LED therapy comes with its own caveat. Protecting your eyes is essential to avoid damage. Without protection, expect your vision to be impaired. Itching, swelling, tingling, and increased sensitivity to the sun’s rays are all potential side e ects.

MoleMap, pioneers in melanoma detection, advise consumers to understand the risks and benefits before engaging in LED therapy, as research into the e ects of red light therapy is still in its early days.

Where do I start?

Consulting a clinician should always be your first point of call. Both in-clinic and at-home treatments are on the market, the former being the recommended option. A trained professional can determine if LED therapy is right for you, expertly tailoring the treatment for appropriate, safe application. Leading dermatologists advise LED therapy should not be treated as an alternative to your regular regimen, rather a supplementary addition to supercharge your skincare.

Experts recommend applying serums or photosensitisers prior – another drawcard to a dermatologist’s clinic over the at-home alternative.

I had a fantastic experience with Richard at Oral Design NZ. From start to finish, Richard was warm, professional, and incredibly skilled. I really appreciated how much care he took to get everything just right - nothing felt rushed or cookie-cutter. The bespoke teeth he made for me look amazing and feel completely natural. It’s made such a difference to my confidence. Colleen, Christchurch

Lemon cheesecake

Adessert or a treat, this recipe only takes 30 minutes to make and is fresh, tangy, and oh so tasty – a cheesecake that promises comfort in the form of classic flavours.

INGREDIENTS | Makes 16 pieces

Base

• 250g packet malt biscuits

• 100g butter, melted Lemon Topping

• 250ml thickened cream

• 250g cream cheese, softened

• 2 Tbsp caster sugar

• 2 Tbsp lemon juice

• 1 cup lemon curd

METHOD

1. Line the base of a 20cm square slice tin with baking paper.

2. To make the base, place the biscuits in a food processor and blitz to a fine crumb. Add the melted butter and blitz again until combined.

3. Pour into the prepared tin. Spread out to the edges and smooth the top with a spatula. Place in the fridge to chill while you make the topping.

4. To make the lemon topping, add the thickened cream to the bowl of a stand mixer. Whisk on high for 1 minute until flu y. Add the cream cheese, sugar, lemon juice and half the lemon curd. Whisk on high for a few minutes until well combined, scraping down the sides as you go.

5. Pour the topping on top of the chilled base and spread out evenly. Dollop the remaining lemon curd over the top and use a spoon to swirl it through. Chill overnight to set completely.

6. Once set, remove from the tin and carefully remove the baking paper from the base. Slice into 16 even pieces using a sharp knife, wiping the knife clean with a paper towel between each slice.

7. Place on a serving plate and serve immediately, or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days.

Vanya’s tips + tricks

• Thickened cream contains gelatin, which helps the slice to set.

• Swap the malt biscuits for milk arrowroots, Super Wines or another plain biscuit of your choice.

• Instead of a lemon curd on top you could use 1/2 cup fruit compote or jam.

Flavours of history

Perfect Tikka Masala, naan breads that are fluffy and delectable, the best mango chicken eaten in years… find it all at one of Christchurch’s highest-rated Indian restaurants.

Oering customers an explosion of tastes and flavours across a variety of Indian dishes, the mouth-watering options at GunPowder Restaurant and Bar include innovative appetisers, curries and breads.

The co-owners playfully refer to themselves as ‘the bros’; three friends who had a dream to open a restaurant that would serve delectable meals and see customers returning time and again to experience a five-star dining experience.

Most important to this trio is that each customer leaves delighted, and in a move that is rare in hospitality, they welcome feedback –positive or not. Serving up the ultimate customer dining experience is worth more than their pride.

“Our number one priority is happy customers, so we always look for ways to tweak our recipes to o er the best Indian cuisine we can. That is why we have repeat customers who come back time and time again.”

“We love food. There is no better way to run a restaurant than to know what good food you want to serve customers,” they say. gunpowder.nz

Classic apple pie

With an elegant lattice top, this apple pie is classic comfort food at its finest. Sweet buttery pastry complements a spiced apple filling for a delicious rustic treat.

INGREDIENTS | Serves 8

• 6 large apples, peeled and diced

• 3 Tbsp butter

• 1 cup brown sugar

• 1 cup white sugar, plus extra for sprinkling

• 1 Tsp vanilla essence

METHOD

• 2 Tbsp plain flour

• 1 Tsp cinnamon

• 1 Tsp nutmeg

• 800g sweet shortcrust pastry

• 1 egg, whisked

• Cream or ice cream to serve

1. Preheat the oven to 200°C fan bake. Grease a 23cm pie dish.

2. Add the apples, butter, brown sugar and white sugar to a pot and bring to the boil. Cook for 10 minutes or until the apples start to soften.

4. Roll out half the pastry and line the pie dish. Spoon in the apple filling.

5. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into strips. Create a lattice top by weaving the strips together. Brush with the egg wash and sprinkle with some white sugar.

6. Place towards the bottom of the oven and bake for 30–40 minutes.

7. Remove from the oven and allow the pie to cool before slicing. Serve warm or cold with cream or ice cream.

Vanya’s tip:

If using sweet apples, you may want to reduce the sugar slightly.

Like this stunning modernist residence in Tai Tapu, including curvature in design is a smart move. Aside from adding a striking visual element to contrast straight lines and sharp edges, curved architecture o ers structural and functional advantages.

Moulding to the form of your body, furniture that is curved in shape promotes relaxation, making it ideal for living spaces such as the lounge or bedroom. Utilising round edges in larger pieces of furniture o sets sharp architectural lines, becoming an e ective alternative to alter the design of the home.

Undulated décor makes a winning case for understated and charming interior design. A practical way to lean into the trend, curved decorative objects are the easiest to find and incorporate into your current aesthetic.

Nature inside

The houseplant renaissance in urban living

In an era where many of us spend more time indoors and at our screens, the humble houseplant is having a moment – and it’s more than just a design trend.

Urban homes and apartments across Christchurch are embracing a leafy revival, turning interiors into calming green sanctuaries that nourish both style and soul.

At the heart of this resurgence is a desire to reconnect with nature. Houseplants not only purify the air, they o er genuine mental health benefits, including stress reduction, improved focus, and a greater sense of calm. Studies show that even a few potted plants can lower cortisol levels, boost mood, and enhance creativity – all without leaving your living room.

From a styling perspective, plants o er texture, height, and vibrancy to any space. Think cascading pothos over floating shelves, a statement fiddle leaf fig in the corner, or a curated collection of succulents on the window sill. For renters or those

short on floor space, vertical gardens or macramé hanging pots add greenery without clutter.

For busy professionals, low-maintenance options are key. Varieties like the snake plant, ZZ plant, peace lily, and devil’s ivy thrive on neglect, tolerate low light, and bounce back from the occasional missed watering. Pair them with beautiful ceramic or woven planters to elevate the look without fuss.

The rise of local plant stores, swap groups, and even plant subscription services in Christchurch make it easier than ever to build your indoor jungle.

Whether you’re a seasoned green thumb or a complete beginner, bringing nature indoors is a simple, powerful way to create a space that supports wellbeing, creativity, and comfort, one plant at a time.

Small build market is growing

Granny flats, holiday cabins, tiny homes, garden offices… it’s all about to get easier.

Big changes are afoot with the Government’s announced changes to their Building Consent Simplification Plan, most notably increasing the home size that will be permitted under the programme, from 60m2 to 70m2

The Government has also confirmed that the Resource Management Act and Building Act will be updated by the end of this year. These changes will support greater flexibility in building materials and allow consent-free builds, including minor dwellings, on urban sites.

This shift, along with rapidly growing demand for holiday homes in rural and coastal areas, is why Lockwood Homes has launched a series of new plans ranging from studios to small homes.

As popular holiday spots become more crowded and expensive, Lockwood’s John Stewart says they are seeing increased interest in more a ordable land near Canterbury beaches, the bays between Ōamaru and Dunedin, the South Otago coast and Catlins, and along the Southland coastline from Riverton to Colac Bay and the West Coast.

“To meet both the Government’s new scheme and this lift in interest in small coastal enclaves, plus the ongoing demand for farm stay units, cycle trail and great walks accommodation, we’ve developed a new range of smaller permanent, holiday and tourist units plus studios from 24m2, along with an Alpine Chalet series,” says John.

“This enquiry is also looking for more compact and low-maintenance homes and cottages.”

Colour drenching:

The feature wall has had its day and now its all about drenching a room in colour, either one signature colour, or two complementary colours. This means no contrasting skirt, trim or ceiling – you are going all in and committing to your colour.

Ceilings are the new walls:

An extension of colour drenching, this means making a feature of your ceiling, which could be painting it the same or similar colour as your walls, covering it in timber, or making it a feature in another way.

Beige

is the new grey:

It had its moment in the sun but now grey is being pushed aside for the warmer, earthier tones of beige. No longer the ‘boring’ colour, beige is now boujee – in a good way.

Ibecame rather besotted with the Emira V6 manual when I tested it for Metropol last year, so I was dead keen to see how this turbo four-cylinder version would compare.

On first appearances, this Emira Turbo First Edition boasts the same beauty as the V6. Similar ‘carved by air’ styling cues as seen on the limited run Lotus Evija hyper car just look the business here. With a low slung profile, wide stance, plenty of scoops and intakes, it’s a textbook mid-engine sports car.

The 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine has been sourced from Mercedes-AMG. Power sits at 268kW and torque at 430Nm mated to an eightspeed dual clutch transmission. Zero to 100kph is dealt with in 4.4 seconds and the top whack is in the region of 275kph. Interestingly, the turbo is only 0.2 seconds less rapid to 100kph than the V6.

Inside it is as ‘driver focused’ as you would expect it to be, yet with a decent number of technological niceties. Getting in and out isn’t too labourious. Once snuggly cocooned by heated leather seats, find an ideal driving position, plus lashings of Alcantara and other high-grade materials. Those aforementioned niceties include Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, a 12.3-inch TFT instrument cluster screen, a slick 10.25-inch touch screen infotainment screen and a delightful 7-speaker KEF sound system.

Get going and the eight-speed automatic box is sleek when sauntering through suburbia in auto mode. However, when you want to shift manually, there is a slight delay between flicking a paddle and the next gear kicking in. Go through neutral to access reverse – a characteristic which is not as immediate as I would have liked.

A firm press of one’s right shoe results in a spool up of turbo pressure, resulting in a sharp kick in the back as you surge forward. With high revs and in the power band above 3000rpm, the Emira Turbo is brisk. Sitting so low to the ground only embellishes this sensation. It doesn’t wail like the V6, yet the AMG-sourced turbo four pot adds Lotus Esprit Turbo-esque soundtrack especially at higher revssomething which likely reflects Lotus Auckland’s choice of retro decals for this car. Handling wise? Sublime. Gallons of grip – when you are in Sport or Track mode, the Emira Turbo just loves being pushed into every corner with extreme gusto and verve. It is beautifully balanced and compliant, while returning a supple yet sporty ride.

All in all, the Emira Turbo First Edition is incredible fun and, in some ways, makes more sense if you intend to use your Lotus Emira daily. Though if you do, you will be getting plenty of stares. Despite lacking some of the drama and character of the V6, the Lotus Emira Turbo First Edition is an addictive drive.

The eight most common car maintenance fails (so you can avoid them).

Most of us just want our cars to keep going and not cost us any money. To make that more likely, regular maintenance is key, yet so often neglected. Here are the eight most common car maintenance fails:

Skipping routine oil changes:

Regular oil changes are crucial for lubricating engine components and preventing wear and tear.

Skipping oil changes can lead to engine failure, reduced fuel e ciency, and overheating.

Ignoring tyre pressure and bald tread:

Proper tyre pressure is essential for safety, fuel e ciency, and tyre longevity. Neglecting tyre pressure can lead to uneven wear, reduced fuel economy, and increased risk of accidents.

Ignoring warning lights:

Many vehicles have warning lights that indicate potential problems. Ignoring these lights can lead to more serious issues and potentially costly repairs.

Skipping fluid level checks:

Various fluids, including engine coolant, brake fluid, and power steering fluid, need to be checked and maintained regularly. Low fluid levels can lead to overheating, brake failure, and other problems.

Missing the warning signs of brake problems:

It’s easy to ignore that squealing noise of worn-down brake pads but they are a critical safety component. Ignoring warning signs like squealing, grinding, or pulsating can lead to serious accidents.

Not changing the air filter:

A clogged air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, leading to reduced power, poor fuel economy, and even engine damage.

Using low-grade car parts: Using low-quality parts is a false economy. It can lead to premature failure and potentially more expensive repairs in the long run.

Keeping poor records: Maintaining accurate records of maintenance and repairs can help prevent future problems and ensure your car is properly maintained.

Behind the Scenes

Autumn is a busy time of year, the clocks go back, we have short weeks for Easter and ANZAC Day. Then I was sure Mother’s Day was the first Sunday in May. I spent the days prior dropping heavy hints to my son and husband.

“I am so excited about Sunday,” I kept saying to them in, what even I can see, was a slightly irritating manner. Anyway Sunday rolled around, my son made me a lovely card and brought me breakfast in bed. My husband got me a new cookbook and I spent the day lazing around reading about cooking, without giving any thought to actually cooking. That was all sorted out, after all it was Mother’s Day.

But then, when my husband phoned his own mother that evening, she seemed a bit surprised at his Mother’s Day wishes. “I don’t think it’s today,” she said. Oops. My mistake.

According to my disgruntled son, I’m not getting a second run at Mother’s Day this year. But with so much going on in autumn, I think it’s excusable to get your days mixed up now and again.

As always, there’s been plenty going on in North Canterbury this month and we’re delighted to bring you some of the highlights in these pages. We bring you updates on the Bellgrove development in Rangiora; chat with local author and keen family historian, Don Auckram about his new book and get to catch up with the new owners of the historic Bellgrove homestead. Yearning for a slower pace Warmth and comfort

Leaning into serene colours that evoke subtle luxury, a seasonal shift is shining in the latest interior trends.

Dulux’s autumn winter colour trends for 2025 capture the essence of the cold weather ahead with simple, sophisticated shades. Warm neutrals, earthy yellows, soft greens, and cool blues encapsulate the feeling we yearn for in this season, Davina Harper, Dulux Colour Specialist says. Soft, greyed-off undertones provide a timeless, grounding quality to each shade, she adds. “The Dulux Still trend offers an antidote to the current mood. It’s a palette that feels comforting, harmonious and reflects the seasonal shift towards a slower, more reflective pace of life as people retreat indoors.” At Rangiora’s Guthrie Bowron, finding the perfect shade to complement your current interior aesthetic is made easy – a team of colour experts await.

With an underlying warmth, this palette’s calming neutrals offer the perfect stepping stone for those wanting to add richness and subtle colour into their home. Brown-based warm neutrals work for walls and ceilings, beautifully paired with warm whites to craft an inviting space. Richer shades within the palette

offer depth, adding a sense of sophistication to your home. Nature-inspired colours and moody shades re-introduce the missing warmth in modern homes, creating a balanced harmony between minimalism and luxury.

In the living room, hallway, bedroom, or office, find the trending shade within Dulux’s autumn winter trend report, and all the answers to incorporating it into your home at Guthrie Bowron Rangiora.

Styling tips with Dulux’s Still palette

• Bring the outdoors in: Soft, buttery yellows mirror the golden tones of changing foliage, while earthy neutrals and browns reflect the natural textures and warmth that we associate with this time of year.

• Use a neutral base: start with soft neutrals, off-whites or earthy browns for walls and large furniture pieces - particularly in open plan living areas. This allows for accent shades from the palette to shine throughout the room, without overwhelming the space.

Want to be bold with colour?

The team at Guthrie Bown Rangiora really know their colours. They are specialists in colour, advice, product selection and application.

Bellgrove Homestead

The historic home is listed with Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga and was originally built in 1880. Prior to this it was the site of the Ashley Arms, an accommodation house, but it lost its licence and the owner, George Hanmer sold the property to his brother Humphrey. He in turn sold it to a farmer Frederick Busch who farmed the land and lived in the existing property. However in 1880 a fire burnt the property down – fire was a common occurrence in those days with so many wooden houses and open fireplaces. But with the old property burnt down, that same year, Busch embarked on building the homestead that we see today, known as Belgrove. And if you’re wondering about that spelling – originally all mentions of the homestead use just one ‘l’.

The property changed hands several times in the late 1800s and early 1900s before being bought by the Inch family in 1920.

Skin Treatment

Profhilo: The Ultimate Skin Rejuvenation Treatment

Profhilo is a revolutionary skin treatment that essentially makes old skin cells act like young cells and stimulates collagen and elastin production, restoring skin tightness and texture for a natural and youthful glow. It focuses on skin laxity and hydration without adding volume.

How is it different from other cosmetic procedures?

Profhilo is a bio-stimulator made from Hyaluronic Acid that enhances the treated area by deeply hydrating the skin and stimulating collagen and elastin production.

Unlike traditional dermal fillers, Profhilo does not add volume, but instead works to improve hydration, lines, wrinkles, skin tone, laxity, and firmness, providing a tightening and lifting e ect.

What areas can it be used on?

Profhilo can be used almost anywhere. The most common areas are the face, décolletage, arms, thighs, abdomen and legs.

What is the treatment process?

Profhilo involves two treatments a month apart and it typically requires a 30-minute appointment. It is safe to administer, involves minimal down time and it’s cost e ective.

Results are usually seen in a few months, and they continue to improve over the duration of the year. People typically repeat the treatment every 12 months

What are the effects afterwards?

Profhilo requires no/minimal downtime, allowing individuals to resume daily activities immediately after treatment.

Although results are not instant (as with fillers), with Profhilo you can truly say your skin is being rejuvenated and becoming healthier.

There are so many that can benefit from this treatment and it is rapidly becoming a must have at cosmetic clinics around the world.

Pearly es

In search of confident smiles, more and more of us are turning to teeth whitening. In Australia research suggests nearly 25% of people have tried it.

This doesn’t surprise George Bayley, Managing Director and co-owner of Smooch Dental Spa. “Teeth whitening is becoming more and more mainstream,” says George, who underwent the process himself when he volunteered to be a guinea pig at a training day for Philips Zoom Whitening system. Like many of us, George’s teeth had become discoloured. Co ee, spicy food and the ageing process all contribute. He was concerned that whitening may be painful on his sensitive teeth. But Smooch Clinical Director and co-owner, Lisa Meredith, made sure he was fully prepared.

“We always begin with a thorough dental exam to check for issues like decay or gum disease,” says Lisa. “Followed by a professional clean to remove plaque and surface stains—this ensures the whitening works as e ectively as possible. We also discuss expectations and tailor the treatment to each patient, especially if they have concerns about sensitivity. Options like desensitising toothpaste or

lower-strength formulas can make whitening more comfortable.”

For George, the whitening took just 45 minutes and his teeth were transformed.

“I was blown away with these beautiful, whitened teeth,” he says. “I haven’t stopped smiling since. It's just the confidence that you know your teeth look great and other people react so well to a smile.”

There are many options when it comes to teeth whitening. But for the best and safest results, it’s always advisable to have this done by a dental professional.

“Professional whitening delivers safer and more e ective results than over-the-counter kits,” says Lisa. “The key di erence is that professional treatments use regulated, higher-strength whitening agents under controlled conditions, which means better, longer-lasting results with minimal risk of damage or sensitivity. We also customise the treatment to each patient’s needs, something DIY kits can’t do.”

As local MP for Waimakariri, I am pleased to announce my Youth MP for 2025, Simoné Bisscho . Following a robust application process, Simoné was the successful candidate, impressing the interview panel with her preparedness and innovative ideas. Simoné comes with a very impressive list of achievements under her belt already, as co-chair of the Waimakariri Youth Council and senior ambassador for the Student Volunteer Army, among many other things.

New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.

We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been under taken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.

Youth Parliament is held every three years. Simoné will join 122 other Youth MPs from across the country to take part in Youth Parliament in July, as well as heading up a local project once she has liaised with the young people of the electorate.

Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists. This is just one more thing to put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism.

Congratulations Simoné, I look forward to working with you and know you will do a great job representing the voices of young people in the Waimakariri.

I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning

As Minister for Mental Health, I was proud to announce funding for Women’s Refuge last month. Women’s Refuge is the latest recipient of the Government’s Mental Health and Addiction Innovation Fund. Over the past five years, the organisation has supported an average of 15,000 women annually.

Women’s Refuge will receive $540,000 from the Government across two years, which will be matched by Government and philanthropic funding to make a total of $1,080,000 over a two-year period. This is exactly the sort of thing the Innovation Fund was designed for, and I look forward to announcing more recipients through the second round of funding.

Beef Wellington is a timeless winter classic, you’ll find it in lots of cookbooks often as a dish to impress suggestion. A tenderloin of beef, cloaked in finely chopped mushrooms and baked in pastry, it can look and taste magnificent but you’re unlikely to be able to throw this together late in the day.

key pitfalls seem to be: overcooked pastry, undercooked beef or a soggy pastry base. There are stacks of tips out there to address these issues – sear the beef ahead of time, make sure your mushroom mixture is properly cooled before placing it on the beef, salt the beef before cooking – the list goes on. Choose your own favourite recipe and do it your way.
