Celebrate dad

It’s not often we set aside time to truly appreciate our dads. Take this issue as your sign to do just that, with Father’s Day just around the corner on 7 September. Fathers, and father figures, spend their energy sacrificing and providing for their family. They’re often the protector, the sense of security, the rock of many families – and the quietest su erer.

We don’t give them enough credit, and the statistics prove it. One in eight men in New Zealand will experience serious depression during their lifetime, and they’re three times more likely than women to die by suicide. Cultural conditioning, think toxic masculinity and social expectations, is a culprit – so don’t shy away from going beyond to celebrate the men in your life.

For my dad, an unapologetic workhorse, this is his first Father’s Day as a retiree (shout out dad) and I’m looking forward to getting his favourite craft beer and providing my cooking services. It doesn’t have to be tangible, because although this issue is packed with all the gifting inspiration you could need, sometimes it’s all about showing your dad or your children’s dad you care. They keep us smiling, let’s give them one back.

Speaking of men who make us happy, Tom Sainsbury is comedic to his core. I was lucky enough to catch up with the ‘word nerd’ ahead of his Reading Enthusiast’s Soirée at The Piano in late August – even just half an hour chatting to this guy will turn your day around. The likes of Kath & Kim did more than just make us giggle – they inspired a young Tom, who would become a big part of New Zealand’s comedy industry.

Across the board we’ve got Father’s Day celebrations sorted, from a foolproof gift guide and footy food to the latest trends and forecasts in men’s fashion. We’ll see more of what’s hot and what’s not from New Zealand Fashion Week in the days to come, so I thought this the apt time to talk to founder Dame Pieter Stewart. The Dame created an event that united a community of creatives and fashion devotees, and put many designers and brands on the map. Now, she’s enjoying the fruits of her labour from afar.

Come Father’s Day, if you’re gifting him a mansion or a matchbox car, you’ll find all the inspiration inside.

Timeless Elegance

Mother of

Dame Pieter Stewart founded New Zealand Fashion Week in 2001 – an event that would revolutionise the local industry and become a creative benchmark. She tells Metropol editor Nina Tucker of its evolution and the satisfaction that comes from watching what she built succeed without her.

These days, Dame Pieter Stewart spends less time waking up at 6.30am to produce the fashion industry’s biggest annual event and more time with one of five grandchildren. “It’s such a luxury to be able to sit back and enjoy the result of what others have produced,” she says on the undertaking that is New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW). She sold the company to businessman Feroz Ali in 2021, who, with a team of industry creatives and sponsors, has developed this year’s ‘new look’ event grounded in local design and commercial success. “Sponsorship funding is always a huge part of getting fashion week together, and the needs of those partners and designers drives the direction,” Dame Pieter explains.

While her only link to it now is as its founder, it’s impossible to shake the emotional investment in a brand she spent 20 years building. Nurturing it into a brand so beloved it could withstand a volatile economy and shifting landscape, Dame Pieter finds satisfaction knowing the rules will forever be rewritten to suit the times.

Producing NZFW in the early days was “so foreign to what people are dealing with now”, she says. The digital age changed everything: “The way we shot stills, video, staged promotion and publicised the event.” It once meant shooting on film before students spent their school holidays clipping and curating scrapbooks full of imagery. Now, designers and events teams have to pivot fast in an overlysaturated online world. That evolution was always inevitable – luckily Dame Pieter had the resilience in her toolkit to tackle it.

Coordinating one of the busiest events on the nation’s calendar generates a lot of publicity – with each innovative transformation comes an exchange of public opinion. “As its owner I was in the firing line. You just have to focus, know your own truth, be circumspect with who you get advice from, and keep on keeping on,” she reflects. “Unfortunately triumphs often don’t get the weight they deserve and the traumas take up far too much of our brain space.”

It helped that work was a family a air.

“For many years I had all my daughters working on the event – Myken as sponsorship manager, Kristen managing makeup teams, Anneke as backstage photographer and Soren assisting production teams. That support and involvement was wonderful and very special.”

To make the guest list in the defining years, you would have to be a designer, delegate or sponsor. Now, the general public gets buyin. It was Myken who saw an opportunity in the industry and consumer experience, reshaping the event from a trade show to Fashion Weekend in 2005. “The designers that showed there were more commercial and shows were sold to the public, creating a di erent excitement and vibe from the industry-focused Fashion Week,” Dame Pieter recalls.

The event was the seed for a community that had never had the opportunity to bloom. “It brings together fashion, music, hair and

fashion

fashion

makeup teams, PR, production teams, and commerce – a whole industry that did not exist before NZFW,” she says. “It has launched countless careers and brands, and fashion designers have become household names. There was nothing more satisfying for me than a designer than to get international orders from the many buyers and press we brought to the event each year.”

Dame Pieter relinquished the routine of weaving countless shows into a careful schedule and liaising with industry professionals three years ago and is still adjusting to the freedom. “Having more flexibility is a treat and being able to go places without the ties of full-time business is quite foreign to me.” She’s making light work of it, soaking up every extra moment with those close to her. “Family is my happy spot –the grandchildren are growing up so fast that I just want every minute I can with them.”

Leftover time is shared between Christchurch and Auckland across postNZFW opportunities that felt right and her return to the boards of multiple health and education organisations – something she sacrificed when fashion week commitments proved too large. “Life seems very busy still,” she laughs. With more travel and good health on her horizon, Dame Pieter’s new version of ‘busy’ has become a luxury well-earned.

DAME PIETER’S FAVOURITES

Favourite NZFW show of all time? Sorry – I can’t pick! To me each and every one was special.

The most iconic New Zealand designer? There are a number – Karen Walker, Zambesi, Kate Sylvester, World, Trelise Cooper, Rosaria Hall, Hailwood, and many others that will survive the test of time.

One piece of clothing you can’t live without? I have some pieces I will never discard from Rosaria Hall.

The person you look up to most? My father and my father-in-law – even though they left us many years ago, when faced with a situation, I think – how would one of them handle it – what would they say?

Your favourite book and movie? In the last couple of years Abraham Verghese’s The Covenant of Water has stood out, and nothing yet has surpassed Casablanca Most special memory? Early years on holiday with my family in the Marlborough Sounds, where we still holiday with our own family.

The best way to spend your spare time? I love to read and listen to music. We go walking regularly and I try to do Pilates on my reformer most days.

WORD NERD Tom Sainsbury

Comedian, actor, writer, filmmaker, 80s mum or ward nurse carbon copy – Tom Sainsbury knows how to tell a story. Thanks to Kath & Kim, French and Saunders, and The Office, the comedy star shared with us his satirical sense of humour, and we’ve all been merrier for it. He chats with Metropol editor Nina Tucker ahead of touching down in Christchurch for his appearance at WORD Festival.

Describe him what you will, Tom Sainsbury is one of the best things to come out of New Zealand’s pop culture.

“I’m a nerd,” he says. His WORD debut on 28 August is no shock – Tom will always “jump on board” a literary festival – yet he’s flipping the average book club on its head. Call it “character insight”, because Tom’s Reading Enthusiast’s Soirée is a deep-dive into the psychological behaviours behind each of the characters his guest authors create. Dissecting their humanity, warmth and personality, Tom is seeking more than each book’s blurb. “Reading a book is solitary,” he says, “WORD is creating a space where people who love literature can be together.”

Storytelling, in its written or visual form, intersects in almost every aspect of Tom’s life. He’s been seen on local shows including Shortland Street, Wellington Paranormal, and as a co-host of Snack Masters – ringing up almost 100 appearances across television, theatre and feature film. “If I didn’t do [creative storytelling], I think I would be very depressed and very frustrated, and find some aspect of expressing myself or expressing an idea creatively. It’s how I’m hard-wired, and I just think I’ll do it forever,” he says.

Tom can take one snippet of human behaviour and turn it into a magical social media skit that, for one of his iconic characters, might as well be my own mother. In 2017, his funny-without-trying nature saw those daily short clips explode on the social media scene and launch him into the spotlight. “It started from a love of sketch comedy,” he says, referencing the shows that inspired him: Kath & Kim, French and Saunders, The O ce and Little Britain. Tom’s passion for recognising and portraying classic Kiwi behaviours found an audience who could relate it to their friends and family – or so we assume. “You just don’t know how people are interacting with it, because it’s just little numbers on the screen,” he says. From Tom’s quarter of a million Instagram subscribers surpassing that of any other New Zealand comedian I could find, it seems a sincere statement to say his work is well-admired.

Between the hilarious, the humiliating still happens. Standup comedy is a “brutal” industry – “You have to be so vulnerable. I’ve gone on stage thinking I’ve written hilarious gags and no one really laughs. It’s demoralising,” he remembers. Tom had his share of ‘flops’, counting himself lucky to lean on fellow comedians like Christchurch’s Chris Parker – who he credits as a “darling” friend who can “turn any tragedy into a comedy”. “When you’re having a hard time, he just takes a scenario and shines a light on how absurd and silly it is,” Tom says.

(ANTI)SOCIAL BUTTERFLY

There’s a danger that comes with being a constantly funny guy. If he’s not on screen, Tom’s probably doing everything he can to avoid attention. He wears a smile and his ‘clownish’ nature, but he’s not the life-of-the-party, quick-with-comedy guy people think he is. “That’s so far from who I am.”

“My true self is quiet, shy and a little bit impatient,” he laughs,

adding that in a social setting he’ll find an interesting person to have a thoughtful conversation with – escaping the attention entirely. “It is a challenge and I haven’t worked it out yet.”

It’s easy to sink into a place of overwhelm, especially in the New Zealand arts industry where creatives must take “little bits of money wherever you can” – and no, Tom doesn’t get paid for his clever daily social media skits. It’s at this point of our conversation when Tom truly opens up, which I’ve read he calls a “toxic” urge to people-please. “I procrastinate. It can sometimes compound into a really sticky situation where I’ve screwed over my boss, or something like that. There have been episodes in my life where I’ve been procrastinating, which leads to overwhelm, which leads to ruined working relationships. I’m trying to get better at seeing what the cycle is,” he admits. For someone who “catastrophises everything” Tom acknowledges his agent Graham Dunster for putting things into perspective.

Discovering the human in Tom feels like a beautiful ode to his WORD Festival event – finding the story behind the person telling it. As for Tom’s character? He’s chronically online or staring at the ceiling in his spare time. He squeezes films from his 300-strong watchlist into three-hour gaps between jobs. He told listeners on Karen O’Leary’s podcast Full Disclosure that he’s 75% gay and 25% straight. He lives a “life full of little highs”, and that’s what brings him back to the surface.

TOM’S BIGGEST FAIL

The worst, most embarrassing [standup comedy show] was last year in Brisbane. I did my first show and it was fantastic, and then I did two and the audience just didn’t laugh the entire time. My whole show kind of bombed. I just raced through to the end and scurried back to my hotel and drowned my sorrow in a Paddle Pop.

Unleashing the Māori economy

Many Māori-led businesses are going from strength to strength and have achieved notable success in various sectors, contributing $32 billion (8.9% of GDP) in 2023 and reaching an asset base of $126 billion. These businesses often prioritise sustainability, community well-being, and preserving cultural heritage, o ering a valuesbased alternative to the mainstream economy.

While the Māori economy is thriving and diversifying, New Zealand needs to overcome various structural constraints if the full potential of Māori values-led economies at scale is realised, says a recent report from the Wellbeing Economy Alliance Aotearoa (WEAll) called Amplifying Māori Approaches, which explores the vast, still-untapped potential of the Māori economy and how it could reshape New Zealand’s economic future.

From period wear brands like AWWA to health brands like Two Islands and dairy companies like Miraka Holdings, Māori-led businesses are innovating business models and contributing to the national economy. As are iwi-led enterprises such as Ngāi Tahu Holdings, which – through prudent investment – has grown its 1998 Treaty settlement of $170 million for breaches of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, into $1.66 billion in net assets in order to provide for future generations: mō tātou, ā, mō kā uri ā muri ake nei (for us and our children after us).

The Whāriki Māori Business Network, which is the largest collective of Māori businesses in Aotearoa, now supports 6670 Māori professionals representing 3676 businesses across 43 industries, underscoring the sector’s growing scale and reach.

However, fully unlocking the true potential and prosperity of the Māori economy – for the good of all New Zealanders – lies in enabling Māori businesses and organisations to thrive according to Te Ao Māori values and practices, argues the report.

“Conventional approaches say economies revolve around assets being worked by waged labour and exchanged on markets. These things can be measured and quantified, often in monetary terms,”

the report states. A Te Ao Māori perspective is that some critical elements of an economy cannot be measured and quantified but are essential to wellbeing. For example, the true value of taonga such as land and water cannot be reflected on a balance sheet or through numerical values.

Download the full Amplifying Māori Approaches report at weall.org.nz/ama. WEAll Aotearoa is part of the international Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll), a collaboration of 19 countries working to transform the global economic system into one that addresses the root causes of major challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and biodiversity loss.

The Māori economy contributes $32 billion to New Zealand per year.

Auction vs deadline sale

What’s the best way to sell your home?

In today’s tight real estate market, understanding the pros and cons of auction versus deadline sale is key.

Marijke and Amy Sheppard, the mother-daughter real estate duo from Ray White Rangiora, have a clear preference. “We’re finding that deadline sale o ers are often conditional, such as buyers needing to sell their own home first,” says Marijke, who brings over a decade of real estate experience. “Unfortunately, many of these contracts fall over.”

While both methods have their place, Marijke leans towards auctions. “If there’s more than one interested party, an auction can spark competitive bidding. Plus, you’re dealing with cash and an unconditional buyer on auction day, which gives you the best chance of securing a premium price in a reasonable time frame,” she says.

“No method can guarantee success, but you’re in a stronger position with an unconditional sale on auction day than with a conditional o er under a deadline sale.”

Team Sheppard are proven auction experts, which is reflected in Ray White Rangiora being ranked among the top three Ray White o ces in Canterbury for auction listings.

To learn more about the auction process, get in touch with Amy or Marijke today.

Meaningful connection makes smart marketing for small businesses.

For small businesses with limited time, resources and budgets, the most e ective marketing strategy is not about chasing likes, clicks, or vanity metrics. It’s about making meaningful connections with the right customers – where, when, and how they’re most open to engaging.

First, understand the di erence between branding and performance marketing. Branding builds longterm recognition and trust – think reputation, values, consistency. Performance marketing is about driving measurable actions – like website visits, calls, or sign-ups. Small businesses often focus too heavily on the latter, expecting fast ROI, but neglect the brand foundations that actually influence buying decisions. Instead of spreading your budget thin across every digital channel, prioritise e ective reach. That means focusing your message on the platforms and places your ideal customers already trust and frequent –whether it’s local magazines, community events, targeted social groups, or email lists.

Invest in quality over quantity. A well-written piece in a niche publication or a trusted local platform can be far more powerful than thousands of poorly targeted impressions online. Likewise, consistent messaging and visual identity across all touchpoints – from your website to your email signature –reinforces credibility.

Finally, stop thinking about what you personally like and how you buy – and start thinking like a customer. Ask: ‘Where do my clients go for advice? What do they value? How do they prefer to communicate?’ Build your strategy from their perspective, not from what you like or how you buy.

In a world overloaded with content, smart marketing isn’t about shouting louder. It’s about showing up in the right place, with the right message, in a way that truly connects. Less noise. More relevance. Better results.

Nest-egg investing

Are you missing out on later-in-life lump sum growth due to a few simple errors?

One of the most critical considerations when investing is when you’re planning on spending your wealth, as a whole or in parts. This is called short, medium and longer-term investing (or planning), says financial adviser Alistair Bean.

“For the 32+ years that I worked at a bank, I would see clients come in and only want to invest for one year because they didn’t want to tie their money up for a long time,” Alistair says. “I would see those same clients come in each year for five, 10 and 15 consecutive years and yet still only invest for one year at a time. It was an opportunity lost. They missed out on the far higher returns of longer-term investments, for instance, managed funds and shares or bonds.

The solution, says Alistair, is to form a relationship with a financial adviser who can help you best allocate funds to the short and medium-term for yearly living needs and mid-term purchases such as car upgrades, home maintenance, overseas trips, family emergencies, education and the like. If you leave bulk lump sums in short-term investments, then somebody else is making money out of your money.

“They say time in the market is most important, but among other things, when interest rates and inflation are relatively low and growth opportunities appear high, it is time to speak to an investment financial adviser for investment portfolio and KiwiSaver needs. The biggest opportunity at present is likely in technology investments for the medium to longer-term, particularly with the current global desire for larger nations to stay ahead of each other.

“New Zealand does exceptionally well with technology,” Alistair says. “Look at Rocket Lab giving SpaceX a run for its money. Many billions of dollars are being poured into all kinds of technology and after recent US tari scares, there have been reductions in pricing for these types of investments, which can o er significant growth.

A financial adviser can remove a lot of the mystery involved in these specialist investments.”

Another opportunity is KiwiSaver, which now o ers many types of investments, providers and funds.

Alistair Bean and Associates – Financial Advisers are specialist investment and KiwiSaver advisers. Alistair focuses on Overall Lump Sum Client Investment and KiwiSaver needs, while Jordan Bean focuses on Younger Client and Women’s Investment and KiwiSaver needs. Catch up with Jordan at the Christchurch Women’s Expo in October. “Investing may sound quite daunting, but our role is to simplify it all. We work one-on-one with you to help make the best decisions for your investments.”

MEN’S trends

What do men want? Menswear expert Mike Lawrence weighs in on the latest trends in shape and silhouette, and his spring style predictions.

In line with the ‘more is more’ movement, layering is receiving a lot of love, says Mike Lawrence, marketing manager at New Zealand menswear fashion house Barkers. The practicality of layering a ords such popularity – o ering the wearer an opportunity to experiment. He notes a button-down shirt worn over a tee with a lightweight jacket or spring knit layered atop and pants or shorts below is a trending look.

Stripes, linen, shirts and tees tucked in, and vintage-inspired colours also swirl within the menswear zeitgeist. “Think vintage seaside – washed greens, reds and blues,” Mike says. “Along with all your staples of white, black, tan and denim makes it easy to pull together a great looking outfit.”

Silhouettes across the board have relaxed. More than ever there’s an art to styling for your shape. Mike shares his styling tips: “You want to try and go for what feels comfortable for you and makes you feel the most confident rather than jumping on to the latest trends. Think about how the silhouettes work together, not too big on the top and too skinny on the bottom and vice versa. Try stu on, you might be surprised what a di erent fit or size might do.”

To accessorise, keep a stable of the following: a simple necklace or bracelet, a good cap, a pant-appropriate belt (not the same one for everything), good socks, and sunglasses in a classic silhouette.

The spring style forecast? Mike predicts more and more linen. “It’s easy to wear and relaxed but still sharp when you need it to be.” Sounds like a welcome new season wardrobe.

jaw

A strong, defined jawline suggests youth and vitality – it’s the scaffolding for the entire face.

All the fuss over full, bee-stung lips and plump cheeks in recent years has now been replaced by the ‘snatched’ jawline. “I call the jawline the ‘new cheeks’, because in previous years everyone wanted their cheeks filled,” says Dr Brigid Lee of Skin Rejuvenation Clinic. “Nowadays, with most people wanting a natural look, which I am an advocate of, a defined and contoured jawline can reflect beauty and youth in a more subtle manner.”

It might seem like there is little we can do to change our jaw, but in fact there is a whole host of treatments and ‘tweakments’ that can be utilised to great e ect on the area. The best part? They are appealingly discreet.

“Ultherapy is our favourite jawline defining treatment,” Dr Brigid adds. “Using high intensity ultrasound technology to boost the production of new collagen in the skin’s foundation layers, Ultherapy is the gold standard for lifting and firming the jawline – and significantly so.” The treatment can be a little “spicy”, Dr Brigid laughs, but your collagen stores will thank you afterwards, with results showing in as little as three months. Ultherapy is the only FDA approved treatment for a noninvasive facelift. Check out Skin Rejuvenation Clinic’s August/September special below for a younger looking you.

Raising eyebrows

Want effortlessly beautiful brows that enhance your features? Think ombré eyebrows.

Tired of battling with your brow pencil every morning to get just the right shape? Or finding that the years have thinned out and faded your brows?

Ombré eyebrows might be the beauty gamechanger you’ve been waiting for.

A semi-permanent cosmetic tattoo, ombré brows can give you back the eyebrows you used to have… actually, ombré brows are likely to be better than you’ve ever had, says Angela McCarthy-Co n, owner of both The Beauty Parlour and Face to Face Aesthetics, a permanent makeup studio.

For beautifully shaped eyebrows that look e ortlessly polished, erasing the years and enhancing your natural features without ever feeling overdone, ombré is the answer.

“The most common question we get is ‘does it hurt?’ says Angela. “Most people experience little to no pain because we apply a topical anaesthetic cream to minimise any potential discomfort during the procedure. Some clients fall asleep.”

The healing process is smooth, and the results obvious. People may start asking if you’ve been sleeping better or mention that you’re glowing for some mysterious reason –little do they know, it’s all in the brows.

It’s not just about skipping the step of your makeup routine (though that’s a major perk). It’s about waking up feeling put together and confident, every single day. Whether you want subtle definition or a bolder look, ombré brows at Face to Face Aesthetics and The Beauty Parlour are a lowmaintenance luxury with high-impact results. Timeless, e ortless, and totally worth it.

Vicki Ogden-O’Fee asks.

“At V for Hair Merivale, we believe perimenopause is a powerful time to pivot, re-evaluate, and reinvent. It’s a moment to put yourself first and step into a look that reflects who you truly are now.” It all starts with the right haircut.

A master of short hair with more than 40 years of experience, Vicki knows how to design a cut that flaunts your best features, fits your lifestyle, and makes you feel fresh, youthful, and alive. As leading silver and grey hair specialists, this team utilises expert colour analysis to understand your natural undertone. One visit and you’ll leave with a haircut that feels like you again.

First, what is all the hype about collagen? Why is it suddenly in everything from snack bars to skin cream?

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body and the primary building block for your skin, muscles, bone, tendons, ligaments and other connective tissues. It’s also in your organs, blood vessels and intestinal lining. In other words, it’s important. It keeps your skin smooth and your muscles strong.

As we hit our mid-twenties, production of collagen begins to decline for everyone, and this accelerates over time. Women experience a significant reduction after menopause. Lack of it means wrinkled skin, joint pain, loss of mobility, digestive issues, weakening muscles, and blood flow problems. To compensate, collagen supplementation has become a booming $9.6 billion global industry for prolonging life and health. Tech billionaire Bryan Johnson, of the Netflix documentary Don’t Die: The man who wants to live forever, takes 25g of collagen peptides daily.

There are, though, questions and controversies around the collagen craze. Some collagen products are inferior and have serious environmental impacts, says Dr. Rob Kelly from Christchurch-based biotech company Tertiary Extracts Ōtautahi. That’s the business behind Ovitage, the world’s first ovine (sheepskin-derived) collagen and the main ingredient in the Everee Women range of protein and collagen powder supplement products.

“Some collagens, bovine being the main one, are often sourced from factory-farmed cows growing on clear-felled Amazonian rainforests so there are significant environmental issues with the sourcing of it, and societal issues as well,” Dr. Rob says.

New Zealand, with its ethical farming and traceable production systems, is only just entering the collagen market. Ovitage collagen is created using a patented process that extracts proteins from New Zealand sheepskin, a waste product of the agricultural industry.

“Ovitage is the world’s most complete collagen,” Dr. Rob says. “Unlike conventional bovine or marine collagen, Ovitage has a broader and more e ective amino acid profile. Conventional collagen is a relatively poor source of branched-chain amino acids. Ovitage has a greater proportion… [which] are what you need to build lean body mass.”

The ovine collagen also contains amino acids like cysteine, tyrosine, and glutamic acid, which are absent or minimal in most collagen supplements, he says.

“Cysteine is not usually present at all in conventional collagen. It’s crucial in hair, skin and nail health… and also really important in anti-inflammatory pathways. Tyrosine boosts dopamine levels in the brain, and glutamic acid supports brain function.”

With science, sustainability, and bioavailability on its side, Ovitage could be a game-changer. The Everee Women product range is how New Zealanders can experience these benefits.

EVERY AGE, EVERY STAGE

Most collagen stops at glow. With 100% NZ-sourced, made, and scientifically developed formulas, Everee Women™ Ovitage® collagen goes further—supporting joints, mood, metabolism, and more. Our formulas target heart health, digestion, cognitive function, metabolic balance, and emotional wellbeing, helping you feel stronger, clearer, and more confident from your 20s through peri and post-menopause, and beyond.

Reboot for men in midlife

Creating community is the answer for helping men in midlife reclaim health and purpose.

Midlife is supposed to be the time when years of e ort has paid o and the wheels of life are nicely oiled and spinning smoothly.

For many men, though, it feels more like the wheels are falling o .

Between the ages of 40 and 60, the pressure on men to succeed at work, be a reliable partner and parent, manage finances in tough economic times, and maintain health, all collide, creating a perfect storm of stress and overwhelm. Mental and physical health deteriorate, stress becomes chronic, energy dips, waistlines expand, sleep becomes elusive, and motivation takes a hit. These changes can quietly chip away at confidence, purpose, and even identity.

“When you look at middle-aged men, we’ve got massive problems with health and fitness,” says Christchurch fitness professional Bevan James Eyles.

“A few months ago, I went to a 50th birthday and I’d say 80 per cent of the guys in that room were holding probably 20 to 30 kilos too much weight. Most of them looked older than their age, there were obviously bigger health problems around these men,” says Bevan, himself a three-time New Zealand Fitness Instructor of the Year.

“There are a few reasons why. It’s a busy time in life, career and family take over,” says Bevan. “Men aren’t really looking after either their mental or their physical health. If you look at menopause for women, so many people are trying to help females at that age. From medication through to support groups through to fitness groups, but middle-aged men are kind of left alone.”

Recognising this widespread struggle, Bevan has developed the Fitness Rebirth Academy, a dedicated

Men’s health in New Zealand: Did you know?

• Kiwi men are three times more likely than women to die by suicide. In 2020 alone, men accounted for 72 per cent of suicides. Additionally, Māori and Pasifika had higher rates than any other ethnicities.

• Men are 20% more likely to die from heart disease and twice as likely to be injured at work.

six-month journey designed specifically for men navigating midlife challenges. “This isn’t a quick fix,” Bevan explains. “It’s about creating sustainable habits that rebuild health, mindset, and motivation step by step.”

The programme begins gently with achievable daily movement and self-care goals, respecting the fact that most participants are juggling packed schedules. Then it gradually introduces practical stress management techniques, nutrition advice tailored to real life, and strategies to improve sleep quality.

“We start simple, small changes that build over time,” Bevan explains. “The first month focuses on movement, daily planning, and carving out just one hour a week to work on yourself.”

More than just physical change, Rebirth fosters community. Held in Christchurch with weekly in-person group workouts and honest, often emotional group conversations, Rebirth is as much about camaraderie as it is about cardio, allowing men to share struggles, wins, and build accountability.

“The real magic happens when the guys start feeling in control again,” says Bevan. “They’re sleeping better, handling stress, moving consistently. One participant’s wife told me, ‘I feel like I’ve got my husband back.’”

The results? “We’ve had men lose 10 to 15kg, give up daily drinking, rediscover energy and purpose. More than anything, they just feel like better versions of themselves,” Bevan says.

“Ultimately, it’s about helping guys realign with the version of themselves they want to be.”

• Each year, 4000 Kiwi men are diagnosed with prostate cancer, with around 700 fatalities.

• Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in Kiwi men aged 18-39 (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer). About 150 men are diagnosed with it each year, with 7-10 of those cases turning fatal.

How to grow an athlete

As a dietitian, columnist, author, and motivator who’s had the privilege of supporting New Zealand’s top cricketers, rowers, and Paralympians – I cannot stress enough to parents, coaches, and teachers, the vital link between growing kids, nutrition, and sport. When I work with young athletes and their families, I often see them flagging: low energy, food intake out of sync with their growing bodies and training demands. That’s why I urge a team-e ort – aligning to understand daily nutritional needs and adjusting intake to match activity and developmental stages.

Here’s the key: kids who are properly nourished love sport, enjoy childhood more fully, and thrive into adulthood. Nutrients hold so much power – they fuel performance, support cognition, shield mental health, improve sleep, and help self-regulation.

Even eating “healthy” food can lead to weight gain if your needs aren’t understood.

That’s why I always recommend seeing a dietitian for a clear nutritional assessment, and visiting your GP to explore what might be missing via blood tests.

Children may eat similar foods to adults, but serving sizes, hydration, and consistency must adapt for growth and performance needs. It’s never too late to make nourishing choices that repair and revitalise. With the right nutrition education, comes the freedom to enjoy a broad range of foods and to tap into personal power, both mentally and physically.

By fueling these young athletes thoughtfully on their journey, we all help them live their best lives long into adulthood.

The lower denture

Challenges associated with lower dentures can significantly impact a patient’s quality of life, and it is often communicated that such issues are unavoidable. While implants, typically two to six, are a common solution, I pride myself on resolving lower denture issues for 99% of patients through well-designed new full dentures. It is rare, but occasionally implants are needed to stabilise a lower denture. Lower dentures are of particular interest to me, as the majority of complications often stem

from poorly executed treatment plans.

I emphasise the importance of the immediate (first-time) lower denture, and generally do not create temporary, disposable immediate dentures. Furthermore, I find great satisfaction in resolving retention issues for patients who have experienced lower ridge (bone) loss. I embrace the complexities presented by lower dentures, understanding that a well-functioning set of dentures is a fundamental expectation for all patients.

BEER BREAD

With its lightly sweet flavour, buttery beer bread is a classic loaf made by dads on camping trips across the world.

One of the simplest breads you can make, beer bread has just six ingredients: flour, baking powder, table salt, sugar, beer, and melted butter. Beer, of course, is the hero. The type you use is down to personal preference and how much you want to taste it in the baked loaf. For a flavour that doesn’t overpower the loaf, choose lighter lager-style beers and avoid brews like IPAs and strong stouts.

Ingredients

• 3 cups sifted all-purpose flour

• 1 Tbsp baking powder

• 1 tsp table salt

• 2 to 4 Tbsp granulated sugar, depending on how sweet you like your bread

• 330ml bottle of beer, room temperature

• 2 Tbsp butter, melted (28gm), plus extra for greasing the loaf pan

Method

Preheat oven to 190°C and grease a loaf pan. In a bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients. Mix in the beer. Spoon batter into the loaf pan and spread it out to reach all four corners. Drizzle with the melted butter.

Bake for 35-55 minutes, until the top is golden. Cool on a wire rack and serve warm or room temperature.

Before spring arrives, turn your neglected winter DIY into DI-Done. Set aside a weekend or two and let the three P’s show the way to a refreshed home and garden.

1. PAINT

Inside and outside, paint peels and deteroriates with winter weather. Walk through your home and note any spots that could do with a touch-up, and, with a dehumidifier nearby, work your way through them. Your house will immediately radiate a clean, refined feel.

2. PLANT

If you’re keen to cultivate your own orchard, now is the time to plant. Apples, pears, feijoas, cherries, peaches, citrus trees – plant now, pick later. Canterbury’s garden centres are stocking a wide range of fruit trees, so you can enquire about size and spacing for the garden you envision.

MONDAY - THURSDAY 7.00am-4.30pm FRIDAY 8.00am-12.00pm (Afternoon appointments by request) CLOSED WEEKENDS

3. POLISH

Freshen up your flooring with a clean and polish. Start by clearing the space, before vacuuming or sweeping and then mopping clean. Hire an electric floor polisher or bu er and source the appropriate polish and advice from your local hardware store. When the spring sun arrives, your floor will shine.

Distinguished Christchurch interior designer Ben Lewis adds another three accolades to his long list of achievements on the world stage.

His work for luxury furniture, furnishings and homeware store, TRENZSEATER, graces countless Canterbury homes, and now, for the ninth consecutive year, Ben Lewis receives significant recognition as a finalist in the International Design & Architecture Awards. Ben has also been named in The World’s Leading Design Names, a publication compiling a handful of the most superior interior designers globally, for the sixth year running between 2018 and 2024. Hosted and featured in magazine design et al, the awards celebrate excellence in the interior design and architecture industry on a global scale, recognised by leading designers and architects in the industry as the benchmark in global design. “It means a lot to receive recognition at an international level for the work you so passionately do day in and day out,” Ben says.

In September at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel, sponsors will announce and award the winning entries with their trophies. Included in the judging process is an open-to-public vote, which recorded more than 86,000 votes in 2024. The winning entries will be published in design et al’s special hardcover issue.

Continuing his run of victories, Ben nabbed an additional accolade as a finalist for the Society of British International Design (SBID) 2025 Awards for the eighth consecutive year. Arguably one of the most prestigious awards events in the global design calendar, the SBID International Design Awards received submissions from more than 49 countries, with each

Christian Louboutin, Bentley Motors, and Boeing, marks this an exceptional honour and achievement for one of Christchurch’s own. Representing, recognising and rewarding talent and design excellence across all corners of the industry, entries are judged on their technical content and aesthetic creativity, with input from a design-conscious community.

This recognition for Ben Lewis and TRENZSEATER is a remarkable achievement for the year-on-year commitment and passion to delivering premier interior design projects. Cementing his status as a name for the very best interior design on o er in New Zealand, Ben says he is “hugely grateful” for the generous support of his clientele. Louvres for outdoor living

Protecting your guests from the elements of all seasons means you can extend outdoor entertaining year-round.

Your outdoor area shouldn’t need to go into hibernation in cold weather, says Craig Rogers of Louvre Solutions. Optimise your space with a louvre roof and enjoy entertaining even in unpredictable weather. His team is here to make that happen.

The louvres integrate flawlessly into any architectural style, o ering form and function. More than just a slatted covering, each louvre is customised with lighting and ventilation, so you can create your own comfort zone.

Think outdoor luxury, yet at an accessible price point. “In the early days, premium products like these were expensive,” says Craig. Fast-forward to now, and that has all changed. “Technology has advanced and widened the options for customers. Louvre roofs are now within the realms of possibility across the spectrum, from entry-level properties to high-end architecturally designed homes.”

Manually operable or motorised pull-down side screens mean you can personalise your outdoor experience. Thanks to a rain sensor, the louvres close automatically when it starts raining, just like magic. Imagine it – no more dashing indoors when a sudden shower arrives. “Whether entertaining,

Playing the wild game

It’s common knowledge that New Zealand’s fragile native wildlife and ecosystems are under significant threat from the overpopulation of introduced species such as deer, goats, wallabies, possums, rabbits, and hares. These animals damage forests, destroy crops, and compete with native wildlife for food, causing lasting harm to biodiversity.

For Canterbury Pet Food Co, though, there was an opportunity to turn this ecological challenge into an ethical solution by incorporating wild game into their quality raw pet food range.

“Wild game has a fantastic nutrient profile and is so good for your pet, plus these pest species have no natural predators so need to be controlled, using them for pet food is a win win,” says owner Stu Free. Products vary from mixes customised to weaning puppies right up to elderly animals, as well as for di erent sizes and activity levels.

“All our game meat is sourced from licensed, professional hunters who humanely harvest animals in a controlled manner. This approach reduces the need for controversial poison-based control methods like 1080, of which New Zealand uses 80% of the global supply,” Stu says.

“Pets are healthiest and happiest when eating a diet that mimics what their ancestors evolved to consume in the wild.

It allows their systems to extract the nutrients needed for optimal health and well-being.”

Canterbury Pet Foods also caters for animals with digestive disorders, weight management needs, and allergies. Talk to their helpful sta at either the Ohoka or Islington stores, or order delivery straight to your door.

Be prepared!

The original motto of the scout movement started by Robert Baden-Powell applies to most situations in life. For gardeners, preparation is the starting point and key to success – and it’s all about the soil.

The better the soil, the better the results,” says Peter Worsp of the iconic home and garden destination Terra Viva. “While the ultimate goal is scented roses and bowls of sweet strawberries, avoid the temptation to just rush ahead and bung the plants in.”

“Plants are just like us – we thrive in the right conditions and we su er in adverse conditions. Well-prepared soil gives plants a quick start and keeps them going ahead,” Peter adds.

So what makes for well-prepared soil?

• Digging over to roughly 30cm deep

• Breaking up soil clods

• Adding compost, Real Blood & Bone, a dusting of lime, and sheep pellets

• Gypsum helps to break up compacted, heavy clay-type soils and turn them into quality soil.

• Applying mulch (fine bark, peastraw) in warm weather helps conserve moisture and improve soil.

“Well dug-over soil allows the roots to get out quickly to anchor the plant and draw in nutrients which translates to growth.”

Peter references a “glowing” garden in Christchurch – one of the best in the city he says. The keen gardener’s secret is “generous and regular applications of compost”.

Compost adds fertility, improves drainage and aeration, and encourages earthworms whose actions and secretions add to the soil’s quality and texture – making weed-pulling a breeze.

Peter advises sourcing the right fertiliser mix for your plants’ specifics. Plants use potash, an alkaline potassium compound, to produce flowers and fruit. “This is why rose food and fruit food have high potash levels – too much nitrogen gives lush foliage growth yet minimal flowering.” Conversely, lawn food has minimal potash and high nitrogen to give strong foliage growth and strengthen your lawn. Peter raves about sheep pellets as one of the most e ective fertilisers, popular for their soil-improving qualities. At home, Peter uses a bucket to combine an equal third of Nitrophoska, sheep pellets, and OceanFert, a pelletised seaweed for great plant health. If you’re keen to seek Peter’s expertise, visit Terra Viva Home & Garden at 242 Roydvale Avenue, Burnside.

DID YOU KNOW?

Soil pH measures alkalinity versus acidity in the soil, with most soil being near neutral. However, there’s a group of plants which need acidic soil to thrive, including rhododendrons, azaleas, blue hydrangeas, daphne, camellias, and blueberries. Use acid fertiliser to keep them happy. A light sprinkling of lime creates alkaline conditions for lavender, delphiniums, lilacs, hostas, and sedums.

Sheraton comes to Christchurch

The iconic Noah’s Hotel is about to get a $150 million facelift under the international Sheraton Hotels and Resorts brand.

Marking a significant chapter in Christchurch’s ongoing regeneration and growing reputation as a world-class destination for leisure and business travel, the city is soon to be home to Sheraton Christchurch. Set to open in mid-2027, the project is a partnership between Mainland Capital and Russell Property Group, who recently announced the signing of a hotel management agreement with Marriott International.

Located beside Te Pae Convention Centre and with frontage to the Avon River, the $150m-plus development will deliver premium accommodation and hospitality to the heart of the city. The aim is to reimagine the landmark Noah’s Hotel site with bold architectural vision and vibrant public spaces that invite connection and community.

Sheraton Christchurch will feature 240 premium guest rooms and suites across 14 storeys. Additional amenities include a signature restaurant, the city’s highest rooftop bar with panoramic views, a club lounge, event spaces and a wellness-focused fitness centre.

Heading up the development is Ben Bridge of Mainland Capital and Brett Russell of Russell Property Group. “Partnering with a world-class hospitality brand like Sheraton validates both our vision for this project and Christchurch’s emergence as a destination for leisure and corporate travel. Sheraton Christchurch will bring renewed vibrancy to the city’s riverside precinct,” Ben says.

The hotel is owned by Emmons Developments New Zealand, a consortium of NZ equity investors, led by a joint venture between Mainland Capital and Russell Property Group. In collaboration with Dalman Architects and Nic Graham & Associates Interior Design Studio, the hotel will be designed to honour the past while embracing the future. This will be Marriott International’s third hotel in New Zealand, joining the JW Marriott and Four Points by Sheraton in Auckland.

Kōwhai Park solar farm reaches ‘Golden Row’ milestone

Construction of one of New Zealand’s largest solar projects has reached a major milestone, with the installation of the first row of solar panels – known in the industry as the ‘Golden Row’ – now complete at Kōwhai Park solar farm.

Here at Christchurch Airport, we’re committed to helping grow the prosperity and wellbeing of Ōtautahi Christchurch. Part of this is enabling New Zealand’s low carbon future and the solar farm at Kōwhai Park brings our vision to life, using airport land in new ways to support a low-emissions future for our region. We’re excited to hit this ‘golden row’ milestone, which marks another step towards a cleaner energy future, and reflects the strength of the partnership between Christchurch Airport, Lightsource, bp and Contact Energy.

The solar farm is being constructed on a 230-hectare site at the airport, aligning with the airport’s broader ambitions to enable a renewable energy precinct and support New Zealand’s decarbonisation goals.

Installation of the first panels marks an important

moment in the delivery of the 168MWdc solar farm, as the Golden Row milestone represents both the full installation and quality assurance of the first row of solar panels. With the process now validated and signed o , construction can safely and e ciently scale up –repeating this process thousands of times across the site. Once complete, the solar farm will generate enough renewable electricity to power the equivalent of more than 36,000 homes.

Kōwhai Park reflects the shared commitment of all three partners to enable a more sustainable future for New Zealand and help accelerate the energy transition.

Engagement with the local community and wider stakeholders remains a priority as the project progresses, with a focus on ensuring the development delivers lasting economic and environmental value for the region.

Thumbs up for overseas product approval reforms

The Government’s recent announcement to streamline the approval of overseas building products is a welcome and practical reform for our sector.

At Master Builders, we’ve long advocated for a system that gives builders more flexibility to use safe, high-quality products and reduces the unnecessary red tape that drives up costs and causes delays.

Builders across New Zealand have faced rising material costs and limited supply options. In Canterbury, when we’ve surveyed our members, the rising cost of construction has been cited as one of the most critical issues facing the sector. Canterbury business confidence is levelling off

The latest Quarterly Canterbury Business Survey shows local businesses are holding steady yet confidence is failing to lift.

After a strong rebound late last year, confidence has steadied in 2025 rather than continuing its upward climb, with consumer demand slower to recover and global uncertainty still casting a shadow.

That said, the outlook remains broadly positive. Sixty per cent of businesses in Canterbury plan to invest in property, plant or equipment over the next 12 months, and 59% expect to hire in the year ahead.

Canterbury’s diversified economy and strong inward migration give us a solid foundation for future growth when conditions improve, and we are looking forward to seeing that play out as we hurtle toward 2026. Download the full report at businesscanterbury.co.nz.

Let’s keep up the momentum

It’s been just over three years since Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre opened its doors for its first conference.

In that time, our city’s business events scene, and the wider economic impact of these events, have gone from strength to strength.

Te Pae Christchurch has been successful, however, this year the new convention centre opens in Auckland, which is well supported by their city and their casino. In Wellington, Tākina Convention Centre is backed by an aggressive Council fund to win events. Both cities are highly motivated to take conferences away from Christchurch. Our proven excellence puts us in a great position to bring even more large international conferences and events to Ōtautahi Christchurch. More than ever, we need to unite in support of our city, focus on the value that business events bring to our region and rise above our competitors in Auckland, Wellington and East Coast Australia. The economic outlook for Christchurch is strong if we remain focused on our city’s future as a world-class business events destination.

Manners in the Modern World

I grew up at a moment in time where the saying ‘Manners maketh the man’ was considered appropriate and relevant, even though the saying itself is centuries old. Today, that saying would need an adjustment or two. Firstly, it requires the inclusion of women as well as allowing for the use of pronouns and if you’re not sure what they are, don’t worry, you're probably not alone.

Secondly, you could be forgiven for admitting you've never heard the saying and don’t see its relevance.

Essentially, it was a proverb (another old term) which emphasized that a person's character is revealed by how they treat others, highlighting the importance of politeness, respect and consideration. The word ‘kindness’ comes to my mind and the question I was recently asked is: where has kindness gone? I thought this question was worth exploring.

Now I’m not talking about etiquette or doing things properly in the sense that British etiquette coach William Hanson advocates. With a following on social media of some 3.7 million, he’s made it his life’s mission to teach and demonstrate the sorts of things that people need to know when drinking tea, buttering scones and holding conversations at a less-than-desirable noise level.

No, I’m talking about the good old kiwi ‘look out for your neighbours, smile at the person in the line next to you or let someone into your lane of traffic and be thanked with a wave or a smile’ type of kindness.

And let’s not forget a couple of others: saying ‘thank you’ and ‘please’.

I recently sat at a restaurant and watched whilst a busy waiter cleared tables, including cleaning food that had splashed onto the table and floor whilst the people sitting at the table did nothing to help and at no time thanked their weary but patient waiter.

I didn’t stay to see whether this was repeated at other tables and by other patrons, but deep down inside I know it happens more than I would like. It feels so at odds with the way many people want to live and connect – the kiwi character that I’m so proud of and the way it shines when it’s at its best. It stands out for so many reasons.

Last year I was travelling in London and one of the people with me was from New York. We went for a walk and I did what I always do and that’s greet everyone walking towards me.

After five or six such greetings, most of which did get me a response, he stopped, puzzled, and asked “what on earth” was I doing? I said I just wanted to be polite and that this is what we do at home.

He said that would get him mugged in New York and that we all have different ways of expressing connection and showing appreciation, but he loved that kiwis go out of their way for others.

I’m so hoping that this remains at the core of our DNA; that we continue to embrace the care and kindness we’ve become known for and that we continue to express ourselves with the manners that, for most of us, have been part of our upbringing.

Reasons given for the retrenchment of good manners and the structures they rest on are as varied as urbanisation, cost of living (we are all too stressed with our own lives to think of others), social media, the internet and different parenting styles.

But I’m also now aware of new norms, such as emojis when you do something good, posting positive reviews after great service, using inclusive language (there are those pronouns I mentioned earlier) and the habit of paying things forward.

So maybe it’s not that manners have vanished or been lost, perhaps they’ve just shifted to adapt to a busier society –and the odd rude person is simply that, a rude person.

Meanwhile I’ll keep smiling at strangers, thanking everyone for everything and doing my best to spread a little more kindness. Thank you to everyone doing the same.

Dr. Celia Devenish

WORDS: NINA TUCKER | IMAGES: SUPPLIED

A lifelong advocate for women’s health both in conversation and practical application, Dr. Celia Devenish kickstarted a movement in rural South Canterbury and Otago. In the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours, the Fairlie local was recognised for her impact.

Healthcare doesn’t stop on the weekend. That’s the ethos Dr. Celia Devenish lives by, so much so she was bestowed an officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in June for services to women’s health and education. “Every day I get excited about women’s health,” she says. “There are always people to help.”

Celia trained in obstetrics and gynaecology in the United Kingdom, pursuing her passion until approached with the opportunity to do an exchange in Christchurch. Soon enough, she was met with four reasons to stay: the rural countryside, Otago University had no female consultants, she met her husband, and her exchangee wouldn’t come back. Luckily for us, Celia brought with her things the New Zealand system wasn’t too familiar with – introducing the colposcopy and new techniques for tubal sterilisation, laparoscopy. Between working and training in clinics, consulting, delivering talks, and spearheading women’s health initiatives and careers, Celia brought the passion that rural communities needed.

IMAGE: UNIVERSITY OF OTAGO

Celia’s other happy place is at home with her husband on their Fairlie farm that stretches a few thousand acres – she returns from the University of Otago on weekends. From the orchard to the garden and caring for the animals, Celia adores the fresh air and countryside still. During cold snaps, she’s cosier inside cooking. Her day-to-day now consists of research as a vehicle to progress women’s health, teaching medical students a broad cross-section of science, and fostering a prevocational obstetrics and gynaecology society. Even though her decades of work have advanced rural healthcare by light-years, Celia was “surprised” and “humbled” when awarded. “I feel that very many people do many good things, and I was just one person amongst many,” she says.

“I feel that very many people do many good things, and I was just one person amongst many.”

From day one Celia’s desire was to uplift women – and she was thrilled at the opportunities available to help the multiple rural female groups. “Women are the cornerstones of families,” she says. “It’s not just women’s health, it’s family health. That’s how I look at it.” Celia began building a community of women who felt encouraged and empowered to seek their own good health and routine checkups or screenings. Educating on the importance of easily-accessed care was fundamental, for women and minority groups.

Systemic changes snowballed – rural healthcare now looks a lot different to when Celia arrived on South Island soil in the late 70s. “I don’t think it’s all me. I think it’s a great team that has achieved this,” Celia says. Finally, society is slowly waking up to the inequities in healthcare for rural and minority communities – but lifelong means lifelong and Celia wants to do more. “I really hope that we embrace those minority populations who don’t have the understanding of self care the same way and that we enable them to have the same results as we’re getting for our Kiwi counterparts.”

Timaru gem 40 years of a

Is it harder to raise teenagers or run a retail business? Ask Aimee and Brent White – they’re doing both.

The owners of Timaru’s destination jewellery and repair store, The Ringmakers, say they’ve figured out the biggest obstacle in business: balancing work and home life. “We have, however, found a solution to the problem of not spending quite enough time with our teenaged children: make them come and work at the shop after school and in the school holidays,” Aimee laughs.

Yet what the pair have achieved is no laughing matter, ringing up the enduring brand’s 40th birthday in an economy where many don’t see their second. “Running the business well requires such intense focus,” they say of the store that lives on Timaru’s Stafford Street, and before that in Stafford Mall.

A multi-faceted model and good old customer service makes all the difference in surviving threats from a pandemic or inflation. Retailing beloved brands including Karen Walker, Stolen Girlfriends Club, and Pandora, plus offering repairs, remaking, and custom creation of jewellery – each customer interaction comes with their signature service and craftsmanship. “This breadth gives us some protection in times of less economic certainty and allows us to maintain a good turnover even when retail spending might be down,” Aimee and Brent explain. With all the benefits of community trading while drawing customers from a wide geographical catchment, The Ringmakers has become a small town success story. “We have a very loyal customer base who, for example, really supported us in the Covid-19 lockdown era and made a point of coming and shopping in store with us rather than online.”

The humble pair count their lucky stars for the operation they purchased from original founders Graeme and Chris Castle in 2016. Yet, a big element of their triumph is the result of a dedicated community commitment and hours of hard work. “We set very high standards for ourselves and work hard to maintain them.” If you asked Aimee and Brent to divulge their secret they would say that great customer service and quality craftsmanship will always prove advantageous. “We also love what we do and it is much easier to work hard at doing something you love than doing something you hate,” they say. “Although the way people shop may have changed –with customers often having done some degree of online research before they come into the store to purchase – the fundamentals of retail have not changed. Customers still respond positively to friendly, helpful staff with expertise and experience, and appreciate quality products at reasonable prices.”

From reminiscing and sharing archival memories on social media to treating customers with a ‘40 Days of Dazzle’ promotion in-store, The Ringmakers team is celebrating in style. One local lady, who shares her 40th birthday this year too, won a competition from the team to receive a $2,500 handmade 40th birthday present – so it’s not ‘tools down’ yet.

1985: Graeme and Chris Castle open The Ringmakers, which quickly grows in scope and reputation.

1995: Customers continue falling in love – and the team has to relocate to a new home on Timaru’s main street.

2007: The Ringmakers become an official Pandora stockist. 2016: The reins are handed over to Aimee and Brent White, who maintain the high standards and loyal customer base through relentless economic times.

2024: Brent is honoured as a Trade Certified Master Manufacturing Jeweller by the Jewellery Industry Registration Board of New Zealand, an award that recognises his commitment to the industry through the training of apprentices and upholding the highest standards.

Architectural Designer

Silva Studio Ltd.

What is your business focus? We provide comprehensive architectural design services, covering everything from initial design through to full documentation. We liaise with councils to obtain building consents and can also assist with obtaining Code Compliance Certificates (CCC) and Certificates of Acceptance (CoA) for work completed without prior building consent.

Tell us about your premises. We have recently moved into a modern, open-plan architectural office that offers a more collaborative and functional environment. Our dedicated meeting space allows us to showcase and discuss products while viewing proposed projects on a large screen. For clients who find it difficult to visualise spaces, we offer immersive experiences through virtual reality using VR goggles. We also have the capability to produce physical 3D models using our in-house 3D printer. These, previously underutilised due to space constraints, can now be used to their full potential in our new premise. If you could change one thing about running a business in South Canterbury – what would it be? Timaru holds enormous potential. Centrally located and offering everything one might need or want, the town remains significantly undervalued. What’s needed is a collective push toward creating better environments, rather than spending unnecessarily on irrelevant developments.

Caroline Bay is a standout asset with untapped potential, yet the lack of development within the CBD continues to hold Timaru back. In my view, revitalising the town centre could be transformative, introducing more foot traffic, establishing outdoor cafés and restaurants, hosting events, and even pedestrianising parts of Stafford Street. From an architectural and urban design perspective, Timaru has remarkable potential, but it’s currently being overlooked and underutilised.

What is your business focus?

We do all things electrical. Laser Electrical has been part of Timaru for many years, and with my wife, Gemma and I recently taking ownership, we plan for it to remain here well into the future. While our work covers a wide range, my passion lies in the commercial, industrial, and agricultural sectors. That said, I enjoy the social side of domestic work - there’s something special about the satisfaction and appreciation clients show when a job is done well. That genuine gratitude is one of the best rewards.

What have you learned about yourself going from an employee to an employer? I’ve discovered that I can push myself further and adapt more quickly than I ever expected. You don’t really know how you’ll perform until you’re in the role. Facing challenges I’d never tackled before and realising there’s no one else to step in, has pushed me out of my comfort zone and built my confidence. It’s also made me appreciate how, as an employee, you look to your employer for answers when things get tricky. Now I’m the one people look to, and that’s both humbling and rewarding.

What do you like about doing business in South Canterbury?

I enjoy the variety in the work, the people, and the businesses we deal with. It’s always fascinating to come across a company I haven’t worked with before and learn what they do. South Canterbury is often underestimated when it comes to what’s produced here and the skilled people who make it happen. That sense of innovation and community pride makes it a great place to do business.

Supporting a lifesaving service

A story of survival inspired the Canterbury community to give big at this year’s annual Westpac Chopper Gala & Charity Auction, raising more than $240,000 for the lifesaving service. At the Christchurch Town Hall in early August, a 270-strong crowd heard from Roz Koning, who credits the rescue helicopter service with saving her life after becoming trapped in a West Coast river.

Ask any successful sales consultant, auction is the most effective way to achieve a premium result.

It creates urgency, draws in motivated buyers, and brings everything to a head in one clear, competitive moment. If there was a better way to sell, we’d already be doing it.

In any market, auction gives sellers control, clarity, and the advantage of an unconditional outcome.

Selling a home carries weight - but there’s a sense of relief and certainty when the hammer falls and your sale is secure. It’s not just a process, it’s a defining moment.

Auction delivers confidence from day one.
