A fashion festival... for Christchurch!

Hold onto your hats, fascinators, or Crocs if you’re one in the fashion-forward community wearing them –Christchurch is getting its very own version of New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) right before Cup Week. The Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival will arrive each November for a three-year partnership, bringing with it shows, activations and events all celebrating local designers, sustainability, and cultural storytelling. Together, ChristchurchNZ and NZFW will host a sartorial special, the likes of which the city has never seen before. How lucky are we?

News of the partnership dropped during the middle of NZFW. There I was minding my own business, oggling from afar at Kathryn Wilson’s flirtatiously playful fashion week

presentation, when an embargoed email told me it wouldn’t be long until Christchurch had its own runway. Gasp. Did my manifestation work? Had someone finally heard me going on (and on) about how fabulously important events are for uniting our city? Would I, come 7 November, no longer feel bitter that I couldn’t make it up to Auckland in August? Whether it’s the clothes, connections, innovation or fresh energy that inspires and excites you, the Christchurch Spring Fashion Festival promises to deliver.

If that wasn’t enough, it was announced in the same week that Priscilla Presley would soon grace the Isaac Theatre Royal stage. Her show, An Evening With Priscilla Presley: Life After Elvis, arrives in November too – so, do we just surrender that entire month to entertainment purposes now?

Okay, back to regular programming. This is one of Metropol’s biannual wedding issues, each of which has a certain air – filled with the joy of Canterbury couples’ favourite day. We’re always spoilt for choice when it comes to curating our showcase, thanks to the calibre of local venues, photographers, and everything else that plays into painting the perfect wedding picture.

Not falling in love with weddings right now? Fall into the pages of personality features, fashion, food, health and the secret to staying youthful (hint, it’s free and doesn’t involve creams, injections or pills), plus the temptations of Dunedin that might just send you south. Enjoy.

The making

of the South Island’s top hairdresser

What does it take to become the South Island’s top hairdresser? Metropol editor Nina Tucker asks Sarah McGuigan, who was recently crowned with the title at the Australian and New Zealand hair industry’s biggest celebration of creativity and excellence, the 2025 AHIA Creative Awards.

Sarah McGuigan’s day will always begin at 5am. That small window she spends at the gym each morning keeps her grounded, balanced and focused. “It’s the only time of the day that’s mine,” she says. From there it’s a mixture of long hours at the salon and limited spare time, “like being on a hamster wheel that just keeps going”.

Becoming the top hairdresser in the South Island hasn’t been a dissimilar grind. “One big misconception is that hairdressing work is ‘easy’ or superficial,” Sarah says. “In fact, a great stylist is part artist, part therapist, and part scientist. It’s a skill that can be often overlooked and undervalued in the workforce.”

Sarah understood hard work from her pre-teens – her parents owned a bakery and while she loved the customer interaction, she was admittedly “a bit bored” and so sought opportunity at a hair salon a few shops over. “I took it upon myself to go down to the salon and introduce myself. From there I started volunteering my time to the lady who owned it.”

Following an after-school paid position, an apprenticeship at 15 years old, and a qualification by 18, Sarah had firmed her spot in the local hairdressing scene before most of us had left high school. She had her eyes on more than just one chair – a salon by age 22. “I started Savvy Hair with just me and two chairs, and over the last sixteen years it has grown into a salon of twelve chairs and a team of ten.”

As Sarah stood on the stage in a glittering red dress she’d purchased just hours before and read out her acceptance speech, it culminated a lifetime of dedication. “That moment

was pretty surreal for me,” she recalls. In her seat she waited – awash with nerves yet at peace knowing she was proud no matter what. “You don’t know until your name is called if you won or not.” The visit to Sydney was fleeting, with husband Rory, salon manager Chrystal and stylist Lani in tow. “The deal was if they could help assist me on the day of my photoshoot and I got into the finals I’d take them with me,” Sarah laughs. “Well the girls I mean; Rory didn’t help.” She smiles softly. “But he’s supported me so much to do this type of work outside of my day-to-day salon life. It takes a lot of time away from family to bring it all together.”

“Bringing this collection to life was more about the challenge to myself to step out of my comfort zone and push myself creatively. Getting the win on top of that was an absolute highlight for my career, to say I did it and people liked it.”

With a growing track record – Sarah and three of her stylists have just received sixteen finalist nominations for the New Zealand Hair Awards in November – comes growing expectation. The perks? A discerning, loyal clientele and the ability to transform people’s self-confidence, but the pressure lingers on Sarah’s shoulders in the form of imposter syndrome. “I’m working on how to stop these feelings creeping in.” And when it becomes a little too much to bear? That’s nothing a “vino and good times” with friends can’t fix.

We get to talking about misconceptions – something of which the hair and beauty industry is full of. “People sometimes see hairdressing as just a routine service rather than an artistic and deeply personal craft.”

Hair is a form of creative expression and art – one that we agree doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. Sarah’s salon’s tagline, ‘hair for good’, symbolises both sustainable practices and a commitment to making clients feel beautiful. “In reality, hair can tell a story, shift someone’s confidence, reflect culture, identity, healing. It’s very powerful.” So, if you see someone with a spring in their step, look closer at their locks. That energy might just be the result of Sarah’s hairdressing hand.

QUICK FIRE QUESTIONS

Your favourite hair trend right now?

Soft muted coppers, natural texture, and jawline jobs.

Your biggest role model?

My mum.

Your secret passion?

I love cooking and cooking for others, and I’m passionate about helping people so what fills my cup is doing things to help others that need it.

The most underrated hair tool?

A good quality hairdryer, never underestimate a great quality hairdryer! We use and sell Kaleo styling tools and our clients love them.

The most requested celebrity hairstyle?

Bouncy blow waves and boxed bobs.

Your guilty pleasure after a long or stressful day?

A gin and tonic or buttery Chardonnay.

How do you submit a collection to the awards?

“The process was big – definitely the hardest I’ve ever done. Submit a collection of six images that tell a story, with cohesiveness throughout the collection. You have quite a lot of written work to do, describing your process, how you did each style and the colour techniques. You then upload it and send it away, and wait to hear if you have made it into the finals.”

Your advice to those budding hairdressers inspired by you?

Images this page: Sarah says the creative team is key on shoot day, and photographer Dave Richards “has been absolutely incredible. Every time, we have grown together in what we create.”

“Fall in love with the process: the cutting, the colouring, the consultations, but also the mistakes, the lessons and hard clients. Every part of it builds you. Never stop learning. Trends change, techniques evolve, and every head of hair is di erent. The moment you think you know it all is the moment you stop growing. Treat every client like a canvas but also like a person. Truly listen to what they want, how they feel, and who they are. That’s where the real transformation happens.”

RRachel Sloane’s light- lled legacy

Co-founder of luxury jewellery house Naveya & Sloane, Rachel Sloane chats with Metropol writer Hannah Brown about sentiment, her creative process, and a new chapter in Christchurch.

achel Sloane’s love of jewellery began with a fascination for how a small object can carry deep meaning. “I was drawn to the emotional weight it can hold, and the precision required to bring that into form.”

Founding Naveya & Sloane grew from a desire “to create pieces that honoured that depth. Not just beautiful things, but vessels for something personal.” Was nostalgia an invisible string binding her to a world surrounded by shiny things? “Mum would often let me explore her collection – pearl necklaces, antique lockets, pieces filled with history. I was captivated by the stories behind each one,” she says. Rachel loved how it felt like opening a little time capsule every time she asked about them. That spark only grew.

Naveya & Sloane was born in 2010 when Rachel and partner Alex Bunnett met, fell in love, and combined their creative forces to create an iconic jewellery house focused on luxury design, craft, and care. With ‘naveya’ being Sanskrit for ‘fresh’ or ‘new’, Rachel’s creative direction also balances the old and new. “There’s something powerful about combining vintage design elements with something fresh,” she says. She’s long been inspired by “oldworld glamour” drawing from cities like Paris that have become her creative home away from home. “There’s a romance to its architecture and history that continues to influence my work.”

A childhood spent close to nature and the ocean, Rachel is forever chasing that feeling of raw beauty. “That connection,

especially the way sunlight dances across water or filters through trees, continues to shape my approach to colour and light in our collections.”

Creativity for Rachel is sparked by sensory experiences. “Walking, driving, exploring a new city, or simply being near the ocean under the sun – that’s when my mind switches on and ideas begin to flow. Movement clears space for inspiration. If I ever feel stuck, a good conversation with my team usually helps. Just getting the thoughts out of my head and bouncing them around can unlock something new.” Light influences her creative environment. “Environments filled with natural light help when I’m imagining something new, dreaming and exploring.” She explains that creativity comes in many forms, for her process, it’s about listening closely to what’s around her and within.

BALANCE AND BOUNDARIES

“The

the community has come together to create something vibrant and forward-looking.” Discovering Christchurch’s appreciation for art, design, and high craftsmanship mirrored her own passions, making it feel like a “very natural fit”.

Balancing artistry and business require protecting “the integrity of the creative process while also making smart, sustainable decisions. This is always a dance, but the team gets it. For us, it’s about staying close to the ‘why’. If something doesn’t align with our values or the kind of experience we want to o er, it’s not worth pursuing, even if it looks good on paper.”

lesson here is when you find someone who does something better than you, let them take the reins.”

Reflecting on the early days, Rachel highlights the challenges of learning to delegate and the importance of empowering others. “The lesson here is when you find someone who does something better than you, let them take the reins. Give them space to learn, fail, and create. Empower them to own what they do and guide them with the simplest form of communication possible.”

Balance and boundaries have also been key. “Know when to close the book or take a break. I absolutely love what I do and am a bit of a workaholic. Understanding my boundaries has been challenging.”

She describes business as a game of passion, resilience, and endurance, especially through hard times. Rachel has learned to listen to her body, set strong boundaries, block out noise, and maintain laser-focus. Exercise also brings clarity: “Getting the body moving is great, then letting the ideas settle again.” Music is key too. “I always design to music, and often each collection has its own playlist to set the tone and emotion behind the pieces.”

HOMECOMING

The decision to open a second showroom in Christchurch came from their supportive client base. “We’ve had such a loyal and engaged following here over the years.” Rachel says that opening a showroom felt less like expansion and more like a homecoming – a way to honour those relationships and bring the full Naveya & Sloane experience closer to the people who supported the brand for years. It’s new home within The Midland Club building on Oxford Terrace was the perfect location. “When Alex and I came across it, it felt like the perfect fit. It’s rich in history, filled with natural light, and has a beautiful connection to nature overlooking the Avon River. We knew we had to go for it,” she says.

“What Christchurch has rebuilt is nothing short of astounding and very inspiring to me. The resilience of this city and its people really resonate as a business owner. It’s inspiring to witness how

Rachel’s advice for emerging creatives? “Be clear on your values and vision, and build from there. It’s easy to be swayed by trends or what others are doing, but meaning comes from knowing your voice and trusting it. Own it.” She warns against rushing. “The most enduring things are built with care.”

Where is the light leading Rachel now? “We’re entering a new chapter, one that feels expansive but grounded. There’s so much more we want to explore in terms of form, storytelling, and connection. Most of all, I’m excited to keep creating pieces that genuinely matter to people. That’s the heart of it.”

PLANNING A WEDDING?

Rachel’s advice to engaged couples reflects the raw beauty of what inspires her most. “Let go of perfection. The best weddings are never the most flawless, they’re the most heartfelt. Choose the things that really matter to you, and let the rest fall into place.”

When a property is unique, slightly di cult, or definitely odd, there is an agent looking forward to helping you out.

“Of course I love to sell the more straightforward homes,” says Thearak Noy of Ray White, “but I’m great with the outside the box options.” Thearak recently brought an 800 square metre section with a 50 square metre house on it to the auction room. “Auction would not be everyone’s first choice but I knew it was the right path. I had 16 groups through and three registered bidders. The property went for $555k, which was $120k over RV.”

Maximise Outdoor Living

Thearak comes from a background of 15 years in the hospitality business. He understands that real estate is as much about people as property. “I relate to and connect with all sorts of people. In real estate, that applies right from the top end of the market to the starters and doer-uppers.” As genuine a person as you’ll find, Thearak loves what he does, “I’m all about the honest conversations, from appraisals through to settlement day.”

The idea of making extra cash through platforms like Airbnb, Vrbo, Booking.com, Bookabach, and Expedia, is a great idea in theory. In reality, it can bring a world of stress and pain.

What if there was someone who did it all for you? Everything from booking guests to replacing the soap. All you have to do is watch money appear in your bank account.

That’s where SparkleStay comes in, o ering full-service shortterm rental property management that lets you enjoy the rewards without the hassle. “We manage and clean your rental,” says owner Sharon Tumminello, who got the idea for the business from personal experience. After purchasing her first investment property and returning to work post-maternity leave, she quickly discovered there were no providers o ering truly seamless, end-to-end short-term rental management. So, she got down to business.

“We handle everything from creating and optimising your listing,

to managing bookings, coordinating check-ins and check-outs, providing ongoing guest support, and more,” Sharon says.

“Other providers tend to outsource services like cleaning, I handle everything in-house, from cleaning, to repairs and maintenance, and restocking the toilet paper. This means we can respond faster and maintain consistently high standards. For example, while other companies might shut a property down for two days over a minor leak, we get it fixed between guest check-outs, no lost income, no stress.”

SparkleStay also take the reins on dynamic pricing, adjusting rates in real time to match fluctuating market demand, a detail most owners can’t track daily. With one transparent management fee and no hidden costs or extra fees, you can sit back and relax.

Whether you’re a new investor or just short on time, SparkleStay turns your property into a polished, profitable asset.

CLEVER CLOGS

Are Crocs cool again?

Ididn’t want to believe it either. That was, until deputy editor

CLOGS

Tamara Pitelen and I were in Merivale research-gathering – otherwise known as window shopping – and there they were. A pair of sparkling, embellished, platform Crocs sitting on the shelf of a reputable retail boutique. Shock, horror – or was it? Did we love them or hate them? Were we really so Croc-judgemental?

Crocs burst into the sartorial scene largely when consumer preferences shifted after lockdowns. An ergonomic, easy-wear design, they became a popular choice for comfort. The brand answered by adapting their styles and charms for the mainstream market, positioning themselves as an it-shoe through collaborations with Balenciaga and various celebrities.

Today, we can recite them worn by everyone from Drew Barrymore to Michelle Yeoh, and New Zealand’s Moana Pasifika Super Rugby team.

Justin Bieber even wore a pair on the red carpet. If New Zealand Fashion Week is anything to go by, Crocs’ entry has been accepted. The shoe earned some serious street cred at the event in late August, firming up as a footwear favourite. Here’s a snippet of how they were styled. What do you think? Embrace or disgrace? Let’s discuss. Head to our Facebook post and join the Croc conversation.

Word, or pattern, on the street is polka dot. Subtle specks, bold spots – we’ve seen them on everything from the international runway to the recent collections from New Zealand brands like Sylvester, RUBY, and Moochi. Adorably flirtatious and terribly timeless, polka dot has looped back once again to the centre of fashion’s attention. Intrigued? Start shopping. Spit spot.

Who’s backing the trend?

We’ve seen it take over Hailey Bieber’s wardrobe and Kylie Jenner’s 28th birthday party. Everyone from style icon Rihanna to singer-songwriter Olivia Rodrigo has sported spots.

I had a fantastic experience with Richard at Oral Design NZ. From start to finish, Richard was warm, professional, and incredibly skilled. I really appreciated how much care he took to get everything just right - nothing felt rushed or cookie-cutter. The bespoke teeth he made for me look amazing and feel completely natural. It’s made such a difference to my confidence. Colleen, Christchurch

The secret to staying young

Research has confirmed what we’ve suspected for years, regular exercise doesn’t just make us feel better, it also slows, or even reverses, the process of ageing.

As the pursuit of healthy ageing gains momentum, the global longevity and wellness market has already surpassed $2.5 trillion. Yet the latest research shows that the foundation of any longevity protocol isn’t found in expensive treatments or futuristic science, it’s already accessible to us all. Exercise o ers far more than just short-term fitness gains; it has the power to actively slow the ageing process itself, supporting both quality of life and healthy years lived.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study in research journal Aging-US, found that both aerobic and strength-based exercise slow biological ageing in fat tissue and key organs such as the heart and liver. This research, recently summarised in science news website Technology Networks, shows how Olympic-level athletes and everyday exercisers alike exhibit younger biological age markers through regular movement.

“This research confirms what we’ve known anecdotally for years: movement is medicine,” says CEO of Exercise New Zealand Richard Beddie. “Now we’re seeing that exercise doesn’t just help you feel younger, it actually makes you biologically younger, and slows ageing markers.”

Not just cardio, muscles matter too

The study emphasised that both cardiovascular fitness and muscular strength were key to slowing cellular ageing. Aerobic fitness, measured through VO2 max, and grip strength, an indicator of strength/muscular capacity, were both linked to lower biological age markers.

“The key is consistency – moderate physical activity that keeps your body moving and strong. Walking, gardening, swimming, group exercise classes – these all count,” Richard says.

In one highlighted case, sedentary middle-aged women reduced their epigenetic age by two years after just eight weeks of structured aerobic and resistance training.

Despite the known benefits, fewer than 50% of New Zealanders meet recommended physical activity guidelines. ExerciseNZ warns this will have long-term health consequences, not just for physical health but also for ageing, independence, and quality of life.

Large-scale data published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle shows that people who engage in moderate-to-vigorous activity may reduce their biological age by up to 1.7 years compared to their inactive peers.

Beyond quick fixes

While short-term exercise challenges can spark temporary motivation, their benefits often fade once the challenge ends. In some cases, people return to even lower activity levels than before, creating a cycle of frustration and physical regression.

The biological benefits of exercise, like slowed epigenetic ageing and disease prevention, come from regular, consistent activity over time.

“We have an opportunity to empower people to live longer, healthier lives, not through expensive interventions, but by simply making physical activity a regular part of everyday life,” Richard says.

Exercise New Zealand encourages all Kiwis to shift from ‘challenge mode’ to ‘change mode’. Here are some tips for getting started:

• Find joy in the activity: Explore di erent forms of movement until you find something you genuinely enjoy – dancing, dragon boating, darts, or other.

• Change your definition of ‘exercise’: Don’t think ‘exercise’, which can have negative connotations, think ‘moving my body’ and include any enjoyable movement that makes you feel good, not just structured workouts.

• Build it into your day and week: For example, five minutes of stretches on waking up, a 20 minute lunchtime walk, half an hour of gardening after dinner, tennis, and yoga on weekends, and so on.

beyond Above &

beyond

This Christchurch radiology organisation is committed to providing the best possible care. “

At Beyond Radiology Christchurch, every decision we make – from the way our clinics are designed to the technology we invest in – centres around providing the very best care for those who walk through our doors,” says practice manager Serena Hitchings.

“That same commitment to people extends to the strong, trusted relationships we have with our community and specialist referrers. In August, Beyond Radiology presented at the recent GPCME South conference here in Christchurch, further strengthening those connections within the medical community.”

“Dr Clarke Baker, one of our highly experienced Musculoskeletal Radiologists, delivered a well-received presentation on acute knee injuries, sharing expertise and insights that support GPs in providing timely, e ective patient care. We see these events as more than conferences – they are opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn with the medical community that trusts us with their patients’ care.”

Alongside this collaborative approach, patients benefit from some of the most advanced imaging technology available in New Zealand, including the latest Siemens 3T MRI scanners with Deep Resolve AI software, high-resolution CT, ultrasound, and x-ray equipment for both diagnostic and interventional procedures. These innovations allow the team to capture previously unseen detail – critical in providing fast, accurate answers for both patients and referrers.

Technology alone does not define excellence; it is their team of skilled, compassionate radiologists and sta who transform these images into meaningful diagnoses and guidance.

“Working closely with referrers, we ensure reports are timely, precise, and clinically valuable, whether that means guiding a patient through a complex interventional procedure or providing clarity on a challenging case,” Serena says.

“From the moment a patient steps into our welcoming Merivale clinic – or our Strowan location within Dudley Creek Health – they are met with a calm, stress-free environment. Natural timber finishes, warm interiors, and a thoughtfully designed flow through the clinic all help to create a sense of comfort and dignity. Every person is treated with respect and compassion, regardless of background, and every detail of their journey is considered with care.

“As a New Zealand–owned, clinician-led service, we go above and beyond every single day to deliver a quality, patient-focused experience. Our growth, both in Christchurch and nationally, is built on the trust we share with our community, and we are proud to work alongside all our referrers to deliver the very best in imaging, patient care, and experience.”

WEDDINGS

Kristie & Ben with their bridal party, by Jess Howzen Photography.

Dressed in love

You’re getting married – the date is set, venue booked, and it’s time to turn your energy to your wedding gown.

Brides usually fall into two categories: the ones who have been dreaming about dresses for months and know exactly what they want, and the ones who have no idea and are dreading the process,” laughs Brides of Merivale’s Lisa Dermott. “We get it… having all eyes on you is a daunting thought.” Luckily, this team are experts in their field with over 28 years serving the brides of Canterbury and beyond, and their warm laid-back approach to finding your dream gown may surprise you.

The first step? Arrange a consultation. “We recommend a bride starts the search at least 9-10 months prior to their wedding,” Lisa says. “Companies can take up to six months to deliver your gown. Starting early can eliminate last minute stress.” Book a one-hour initial appointment for just $40 and enjoy the entire showroom to yourself, with one of their expert consultants advising and suggesting styles to suit your figure and vision.

“As a store we are quite unique and our close-knit team are trained couturiers who can individually create a bespoke gown or alter our readymade gowns to perfection.

“Our ‘Bespoke Made To Measure’ gowns allow brides to create a perfect gown without compromise. We are very proud to o er a full in-store service to our brides. It makes the process more special,” Lisa says. Brides of Merivale stock leading labels such as Made With Love, Kellylin Couture, Miss Chloe and Miss Scarlet.

So, what are the trends right now? “We are still seeing a lot of simple gowns,” Lisa says. “Soft chantilly-style lace with delicate beading are trending too, with lace-trimmed veils and accessories proving popular. Style-wise, strapless and o the shoulder versions are making an impact, and brides continue to layer their look with changeable pieces.

“Overall, a bride should wear what suits their body, personality, and colouring. It’s a complex process to work through, and that’s what we do best,” Lisa smiles.

Call or email the team at Brides of Merivale to arrange your consultation.

stress-less Your

sidekick

The mission is simple:
To make your day flow like Champagne – smooth, sparkling and stress-free.

f you’re busy juggling logistics, timelines and vendors, it’s hard to imagine truly enjoying your wedding day.

On the Day Events manages the setup, liaises with your vendors, oversees the runsheet, and troubleshoots any issues that could derail your perfect planning. Most importantly, they’re the point of contact throughout the day so you don’t have to be.

Founder and lead coordinator Jodie Shaw (pictured middle) has a sharp eye for detail and a calm, capable approach that ensures your day flows seamlessly.

“We’re not planners, we specialise in a niche market of managing the day itself. You’ve done the planning, made the decisions, and curated your dream day,” Jodie says. “Investing in an On The Day coordinator allows you to be fully present and relaxed enough to enjoy each and every moment.”

“Walking into our reception and seeing how beautifully Jodie had set everything up exactly how I imagined was extremely special. We can hand on heart say it would not have been anywhere near as carefree and amazing without all her work,” say newlyweds Mitchy and Alex.

Jodie’s passion for on-the-day wedding coordination began while working as a venue manager at The Great Hall in the Arts Centre, Christchurch.

“Too often, I saw brides racing against the clock, trying to set up the venue instead of enjoying getting ready with their bridal party,” she recalls. “Asking family and friends to help can create unnecessary stress and pressure on everyone. From my 20 years of event experience here and overseas, I knew there had to be a better way.”

“Our wedding day was wet! We had 120ml rain which made for muddy times in our reception marquee for 170 guests,” say newlyweds Claire and George. “Jodie soldiered on in gumboots and looked after our guests just as well as us. To save our oldest guests making their way through the mud to the bu et table, Jodie went above and beyond and brought dinner to our family members instead. We couldn’t recommend Jodie enough to anyone planning their wedding.”

“I found Jodie so personable and loved spending time with her. She makes you feel like you’re her full focus and supports you with a tailored approach to each individual,” says bride Courtney Ten-Hove.

Let Jodie shout you a co ee to see how On The Day Events can help on your big day – it’s more like catching up with a girlfriend who knows the industry inside out and can guide you through the tricky logistics.

The perfect partnership

After years of extensive renovations, Brent and Kim Robertson stood at The Hilltop, admiring the view while enjoying a celebratory glass of bubbles, and asked the big question: who’s going to do this place justice?

The answer was obvious: 5th Street Restaurant. It’s a partnership that makes sense. The Hilltop has the jaw-dropping views, heritage bones, and enough deck space for the entire extended whānau. 5th Street has the menus that make people whisper ‘this is the best thing I’ve ever eaten’ between bites. Together, they’ve created an experience that’s less ‘function centre’ and more ‘why didn’t we think of this sooner?’

What sealed the deal was more than logistics, it was shared values. Brent and Kim weren’t looking for just a caterer; they wanted a team who cared about hospitality as much as they did about restoring The Hilltop. After sitting down with the crew from 5th Street, it became clear they had the same obsession with detail, atmosphere, and making people feel at home. The partnership grew out of a genuine respect for each other’s craft – one side passionate about food and service, the other about creating a backdrop where memories can live.

Here’s the kicker: 5th Street doesn’t just cook – they run the whole show. Think seamless service, clever recommendations, and answers to the questions you didn’t even know to ask. The kind of well-oiled machine that makes hosting feel e ortless, while you get all the glory. They’ve got the gear, the know-how, and the team to pull it o , so you can skip the hassle of piecing together suppliers and simply turn up ready to celebrate. Weddings, milestone birthdays, Christmas functions, or a corporate gala that people won’t fake an excuse to skip, The Hilltop x 5th Street is about celebrations that actually feel like you – fun, stylish, and impossible to forget. The Hilltop sets the scene; 5th Street sets it alight. Now taking bookings for Christmas 2025 and beyond.

Location, location, location is what is hard to beat with this venue. A jewel in the crown of inner city heritage buildings, the chapel is conveniently located in the CBD. A lovely wedding venue any season, guests stay warm

and dry indoors during the colder months, and are shaded outdoors by lush greenery on hot summer days. If weather allows, the gardens o er a tranquil area for guests to gather before moving to a reception location.

Once a church, the Rose Historic Chapel is now administered by a trust, on behalf of the Christchurch City Council, leased out as a wedding and event venue. Four minutes by car and a 14 minute walk from Cathedral Square, the chapel celebrates inclusivity, welcoming wedding ceremonies of all religions and cultures.

day to keep

“A wedding is the only time in a couple’s life that they’ll never be able to rewind,” says wedding cinematographer David Duckworth.

From the ceremony and vows to the reception and speeches, a couple’s special day is one to remember forever. One that can be captured and relived endlessly with Romantic Reels.

O ering a range of packages, Romantic Reels captures it all. From full ceremony films showcasing the reception and speeches, to cinematic highlight films and social media teasers.

David takes the time to understand each couple and the moments that matter most. “I’m very passionate about it because I get to create something that’s personalised and important to the couple,” he says, “I make it a rule that I connect with the couple before the wedding day and before they sign the contract so they feel comfortable with me and know the process.”

When couples receive their package, David says most will “cry from happiness, which is delightful”.

David describes his work as “capturing the natural moments of emotional reality between two people who are committing to marriage. It is a time-capsule for generations”.

Top wedding fails

A wedding planner reveals the most common mistakes couples make when planning their big day.

I’ve seen it all over the years,” says wedding planner and stylist

Suzanne Carson. “Weddings that went o without a hitch and others where, if something could go wrong, it did. The Christchurch earthquakes are a good example. I was staging a wedding and suddenly needed a new venue and catering when the Christchurch Gondola was red tagged. I had to move quickly for celebrations to proceed. Nerves were tender as aftershocks continued but the couple, Karry and Tobi, were happy and looked gorgeous.”

Here’s Suzanne’s list of the biggest fails when planning a wedding: Not budgeting from the get-go: Wedding budgets are not bottomless. Many couples start booking vendors before knowing all the costs for the day. Accruing debt is not a great way to start a life together.

Hastily booking a venue:

Many couples rush to book a venue before checking it’s the perfect venue for them. Consider visual appeal, a layout appropriate for the type of wedding, size of the guest list, and budget.

Not hiring professionals

Relying on friends instead of experienced vendors – like DJs, photographers, or co-ordinators – can backfire badly. Professionals know how to handle the unexpected; their experience is invaluable. Trying to please everyone

From your guest list to dress choice and wedding styling, trying to make everyone happy leads to decision fatigue, diluted vision and disappointment. Remember it is your day.

Ignoring the guest experience

Guests who are too hot, too hungry, or too confused about where to go won’t be having fun. Think about their comfort and flow.

Letting trends take over

It’s easy to get swept up with what’s in or what your favourite celebrity did at their wedding, but your wedding should reflect you and your personality, not just what’s trending on social media.

Suzanne Carson has been planning weddings for more than 20 years.

Married with mead

Celebrating a wedding involves many traditions. One of the oldest relates to the drinking of mead, or honey wine, in celebration of the joyful occasion.

The term ‘honeymoon’ is said to originate from the 5th-century custom of giving a newly married couple enough mead to last them one moon cycle, about a month. The mead was intended to enhance the couple’s virility and fertility, helping them conceive.

These traditions make a bottle of mead an ideal wedding gift. The oldest alcoholic beverage, mead is a delicious drink that has the added benefit of not expiring, which makes it a wonderful keepsake to remember the special day.

The Colony store in Christchurch represents a Kiwi family tradition of mead and honey since 1868. Of their 14 di erent varieties of mead, it is the summery Lovers Mead that most celebrates the ancient newlywed tradition, making it perfect for wedding celebrations. Another option that is popular for weddings is called The Proposal, a refined honey and brandy liqueur, which contains flakes of gold for a special touch. This tells the true story of Louisa and Johan Hansen, who met on the Otago goldfields during the 1860s gold rush. Johan found just enough gold to make a ring and propose to Louisa, the two going on to have a family and establish a general store that is still acknowledged generations later in the family-owned Colony business and product range. Colony can work with you in planning your wedding tables and gifts. Visit the team at The Crossing in central Christchurch for a tasting, or shop online.

Island nuptials

Beyond the big day, Niue is an adventure lover’s dream. Explore hidden sea caves, swim with dolphins, or simply unwind in luxury accommodation with panoramic ocean views. Your guests will cherish the opportunity to turn your wedding into an island escape, immersing themselves in the tranquillity and culture of this Pacific gem.

With personalised service, stress-free planning, and a stunning setting, a Niue wedding promises not just a ceremony. It’s an experience; one that begins your journey together in the most magical way possible.

Taking the cake

What kind of cakes are going down a treat at Christchurch weddings? Here’s a sweet taster...

The traditional wedding cake dates back thousands of years to the age of the Romans, when the groom would break a loaf of bread over the bride’s head as a symbol of good luck. Since then, it has evolved and morphed in a myriad directions. From the massive, multi-tiered and elaborate cakes of Queen Victoria, to snowwhite icing fruit cakes topped with bride and groom figurines in the 80s, to the trending cakes of 2025, which is a time of ‘anything goes’, from traditional pure white to colourful works of art bedecked with berries, citrus and stone fruits, or pressed edible flowers.

The taste you love

Enjoy your favourite local neighbourhood café in unique locations all across the city.

With Cocoa Black, your local co ee is always just around the corner. Seven locations across Christchurch means your favourite can be enjoyed anywhere. Café owner Yong Ren says he didn’t imagine opening multiple cafés. “I never planned to open more than one, but the people love us, they love the food and the atmopshere, and they love the friendly service.”

No matter which Cocoa Black location you visit, you get the same quality experience. “We are not a franchise where consistency is out of our control,” Yong explains. “Each store has a manager who has

worked for me for over two years, they know how we can be consistent with our service and quality of our food.”

All the food is cooked on site using their own recipes and each location has its own special feel. “Waikuku is an old timber building, with a log fire. St Martins has a garden,” says Yong, “I am not doing the same for all of them.”

Visit your local café at Bishopdale, Merivale, Wigram, St Martins, Waikuku, Marshland, and their new Redcli s location.

Local Lincoln gem

Serving refined fusion flavours, this neighbourhood eatery is already a firm favourite.

Just seven months ago, The Sparrow spread its wings in the heart of Lincoln and is already a dining destination making locals proud. Born from the success of its sister restaurant Amore in Halswell, this is where fine dining meets the charm of a small community.

Inspired by Lincoln’s natural beauty and farmland, The Sparrow has a farm-to-table focus, partnering with local growers and suppliers to bring the best seasonal produce, fresh meats, and quality ingredients straight to the plate.

Led by head chef Tej in the kitchen and front-of-house expert Karam Malhi, the dinner menu is a refined fusion of exotic and international flavours.

“For us, it’s about more than just dining, it’s about connection. We want our guests to taste the freshness of Canterbury in every plate, paired with the rich flavours of the Mediterranean and Middle East, all brought together with a delicate touch of Asian creativity,” say Tej and Karam. Weekends o er a house-made Italian lunch menu while happy hour from Tuesday to Sunday invites guests to relax with bar snacks, selected house wines, and beer. Families are welcomed too, with a thoughtfully designed kids’ play area that makes dining out enjoyable for everyone.

More than a restaurant, The Sparrow is where community, cuisine, and hospitality come together.

Integrate the energy of your wedding day into your home with these ideas for keeping the magic alive long after the day itself is done.

You’ve dreamed about it for years.

For many months, you’ve talked, planned and agonised ad nauseam over details like calligraphy fonts and sugared almonds. Then the big day is finally here and before you can blink, it’s all over. Let’s not forget the small fortune spent as well, often as much as a deposit on a house, so after the music is turned o and all of the guests have gone home, after the flowers have wilted and your dress has been packed away, how do you bring the energy, love, and happiness of that day permanently into your home as you start your new life? Great question! Here are six ideas…

1

Preserve your wedding bouquet

From framing to resin-dipping or pressing, there are many di erent ways to preserve the flowers from your wedding day. Get your bouquet pressed and put in a suspended frame to display in your home as an ever-present reminder of your day. Other options, thanks to local businesses like Casting Florals and Little Goddess Online, are to have your flowers turned into an art piece in glass-like resin or to use parts of the bouquet to make resin jewellery, key rings, candle holders, and more. Great for your own home or as gifts.

2

Signature scent your day

This one needs forethought. To keep that wedding day vibe alive for many years to come, give your wedding day a signature scent. A fragrance like jasmine could be used for candles, body spray, hand soap, fresh flowers, room sprays and di users. As scent is one of the most powerful memory triggers, it will not only have your wedding day smelling beautiful, it will also help bring the associated love, joy and optimism of the day into your home every time you light a fragrant candle.

3

Create guest art

There are many fun and innovative ways to have your guests create something that could live in your home. For example, commission a canvas with an illustration of a tree that has many branches and leaves. Display the canvas at your reception and ask your guests to write their names on the leaves, one leaf per guest, couple or family. After the wedding, have it framed and hung in your home.

4

Print and frame your photos

Yes, this seems obvious, yet so many people don’t get around to it. You could make a wedding album, create a gallery wall in your hallway, have a single frame on your nightstand, set a wedding photo as your phone background, or update your online profile… whatever it is, get your photos o your computer and into places that you can see regularly.

Spring into outdoor entertaining

Longer days are already upon us, and before you know it warmer weather will usher in sunny barbecue entertaining. Talk to the team at Louvre Solutions today to ensure your guests are protected from whatever the weather may throw your way. Make your place the centre of attention all year-round with the perfect louvre solution.

5

Repurpose wedding signage

If you have a welcome sign with your names on it, it could look great in your garden. Neon signage, a sign with your last name at the entrance, or a cute love quote are all options too. If you had any sort of signage at your wedding, see if there’s a spot you can repurpose it for your home.

6

Custom fridge magnets

Have a selection of your cutest, funniest or most heart-warming wedding photos turned into fridge magnets strong enough to hold up your shopping list, to-dos, bills to be paid, recipes torn out of magazines… and all the other things you stick on your fridge.

Perfecting your gathering space

At Dream Doors Kitchens, they believe the kitchen is a place to gather, cook, share meals, and socialise with friends and family. Whether you require minimal renovation or an entire new kitchen, they can take care of as much, or as little, of the renovation process as you need. Adrian and his team of skilled tradesman take great pride in their work and are ready to help you make your New Kitchen or Kitchen Renovation dreams come true.

Refresh a functioning kitchen

How much value can a refreshed kitchen add to a home on the market? Better yet – what difference could it make to your quality of living (and cooking)?

We asked the team behind MF Turnbull, who have been recycling and revitalising the kitchens of Canterbury for over 35 years. One recent job was a word-of-mouth referral – a real estate agent told his seller just how much a beautiful new kitchen could boost the sale of the home. Instead of an expensive gut job, the home seller called the team at MF Turnbull who measured, quoted, and refurbished the kitchen for a great price. “It looks a million bucks,” says Jason Turnbull, who managed the project. A fresh colour and coating, brand new handles, and a modern benchtop resurrected the kitchen, returning it to be the heart of the home – and made it a great selling point.

What does the transformation process look like? “We work closely with the client to get their vision and o er ideas we’ve seen work for other people,” Jason says. The skilled craftspeople then

remould your kitchen with meticulous attention to detail and a focus on sustainability. “I always tell everyone I work with, ‘If your kitchen is functional and has good bones, why not paint it instead of replacing it?’” Forget spending a fortune on takeout each night because you can’t use your kitchen – your cooking space will be left fully functionable, minus a door or draw front here and there. “Essentially, we are recycling our clients’ existing kitchens and reducing landfill waste.”

Jason and his crew have completed multiple kitchens both in the private and commercial sector this year – some over 20 years old. “They’re fully functional, just in need of a couple minor repairs and a new colour to freshen them up and bring them into today’s modern colour schemes,” Jason explains.

Keen on a gorgeous new kitchen for a fraction of the cost? Call the team at MF Turnbull or view the website.

Step 1: What’s possible?

The team can refinish almost any kitchen (or furniture) and make it look new again. Send photos of your kitchen for an assessment plus a price estimate for the project.

Step 2: Price and plan

The team will meet you and undertake a full assessment for a quote. They can also discuss other alterations such

as removal of overhead units, changing a cupboard to drawers or new benchtops/handles.

Step 3: Remove, refinish, reinstall

Their specialist team will remove your kitchen and it will be prepared and finished in the company’s modern workshop before reinstalling. Allow a day to remove, and reinstall, and 10-12 days to refinish.

From sneakers to fine art, coins, Star Wars figures, or your cousin’s obsession with antique teaspoons… collections are addictive. How do you best display your beloved belongings?

Whether it’s a series of adored ornamental oddities – from blue glass vases to anything cat-related – or the result of an addiction to buying hats, vinyl records or shoes, many of us want to integrate our collection into our home interiors so we can enjoy them all the time. Collections of meaningful things, whether antique, retro, themed, or something else, add personality and soul to your home. Collecting is a pastime that connects us to cherished memories, historic moments, and the thrill of discovery. The trick is to display your collection in a way that gives connoisseur vibes rather than hoarder clutter.

Group by theme

Arrange similar items together by theme, era, or colour to create a more cohesive and intentional look rather than a cluttered one.

Set up adjustable display shelves

Create sanctuaries for your treasured memorabilia so they have a safe place to call home. Note that protection from dust, sun and other damage is key, so use specially designed display cases, shadow boxes, cabinets, or UV-protective glass.

Numbers and shapes

Work in odd numbers, usually threes or fives, as groupings of odd numbers are more comfortable on the eye. As well, triangles in groups create visually appealing arrangements. Arrange displays to avoid overcrowding and add visual interest through varying heights, sizes, and strategic lighting.

Opposites attract

Mix and match di erent collections. For example, your china teacups could look great stacked on a pile of vintage books alongside a potted plant.

Keep it fresh

Rotate your display seasonally, giving di erent items the chance to be the ‘hero’.

Head to Farmhouse in Methven with that project you would like upcycled, and let our team turn it into something unique and special. www.farmhousedesigndecor.nz.

Small indigo blue leather bag hand made in Italy, exclusive to French Blue.

Seamless style

Get creative with regular furniture pieces to turn everyday items into eyecatching displays. Utilise functional furniture, like co ee tables with built-in display areas or, like you get in a museum, a table with a transparent top that can highlight smaller items like antique trinkets or miniature collectables.

Use unique display vessels Employ items that complement the collection, such as old dressers or china closets, to add a unique touch and visual appeal.

For art’s sake

To e ectively display art, hang larger pieces using the two-thirds rule for furniture (for art above a sofa, bed, or mantelpiece, it should be roughly two-thirds the width of the furniture beneath it), place art at eye level with the centre at about 150cm from the floor, choose pieces you love for their meaning and aesthetic, and provide a stable environment by avoiding direct sun, extreme heat, and humidity.

If the ute is one with our national identity, who is the biggest player? Metropol writer Ben Selby heads to Wellington

Kto test the latest contender.

ia, who have been making o -road military vehicles since 1973, have o cially entered the ute market with the allnew Tasman. It boldly goes where no production Kia has gone before, quite literally, as we journeyed to attend its launch at Dirt Farm, about an hour’s drive north of Wellington.

To start, I sat as passenger around the tight and immensely technical professional o -road course. When we quite literally dove down into a muddy water pit, the Tasman showed its ability to wade through 800mm of water which was mighty impressive. The Tasman also sports between 206mm to 252mm of ground clearance, depending on the model you choose.

By part two of the day, I was more than ready to take the wheel.

The Tasman’s 2.2L turbo diesel four pot is refined in the way it puts

the power down. I never found myself without power on tap and the eight-speed auto box served up some decently slick shifts.

The way trails rose, fell, and banked, over left me relying very much on the Tasman X-Pro’s ground view monitor system. This gives you a display of the terrain ahead and exactly where your front wheels are in relation to it. Factor in the surround view monitor – standard on the X-Line and X-Pro models, and you receive a greater level of confidence. The Tasman’s X-Trek system manages power and torque e ectively, o ering five speed settings for tackling terrain, like an o -road cruise control with you in command.

Stylistically, this first ute e ort from the Korean brand is striking –a pronounced front grill dominates the front. It has a ‘square-jawed’ no nonsense sort of stance.

The interior is one of refinement and durability. The Tasman features a 30-inch panoramic display that includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch instrument cluster. The Tasman has a payload of up to 1000kg and a 3.5 tonne towing rating. Extra space can be found as Kia allows you to fold away the rear seats, leaving an impressive 45L of room to store further valuables.

Five di erent spec levels make up the Tasman range, beginning with the entry level Tasman TX 4WD at $52,990. You then have the TXR 4WD ($58,690), TXS 4WD ($62,690), X-Line 4WD ($69,690) and the flagship X-Pro at $79,690. All models are powered by the same 2.2L four-cylinder turbo diesel engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Underneath sits Kia’s new ladder frame chassis designed to be as robust and durable as possible. The X-Line and X-Pro models get an additional 6.3L of space thanks to a storage area situated within the rear fender flares.

Kia have gone all out to gain a firm foothold in one of the most competitive New Zealand markets and from this taster at Dirt Farm, it certainly shows. As far as first impressions go, Kia’s Tasman is a solid start.

Behind the Scenes

One of the many things we love about putting Essence magazine together is getting to see some of the interesting homes and gardens around North Canterbury. 84

Many of them are beautiful but we particularly enjoy some of the more quirky. So, this month we were delighted to get a look around a ‘chateau’ tucked away behind a macrocarpa hedge on the way to Amberley. A project that has been 20 years in the making, the chateau is still a work in progress and its bursting with personality and interesting features. We were so bowled over by it that Dorothy drove into one of the garden bed edges on the way out. No damage was done though and we think our readers will love getting a glimpse of this utterly unique home.

Getting out and about around the region lately, it’s also apparent that spring is very much around the corner. New lambs are bouncing around paddocks, blossom is starting to show and warmer

days seem to be creeping in. It’s a particularly beautiful time of year in North Canterbury heralding the start of more outdoor events. The Scargill Spring show takes place later this month and we have been chatting to the organising committee about what to expect. Check out the details on page 88.

Sticking with the outdoors, a little closer to home, we’ve been asking for gardening tips. The keen gardeners and owners of Willoughbridge in Rangiora were kind enough to share some great advice with us. You’ll find their tips on page 88 in our spring feature.

We’ll be getting outside and putting their advice into practice on the next sunny weekend.

NEW HOME, same style

The Fabric of Society owner Emily Rowse (pictured) says it was time for a fresh start. “It’s so refreshing, and the commute is a lot quicker,” she laughs. Fresh with raw finishings and an industrial edge, The Fabric of Society is home to a collection of beautiful, high-quality homewares, eclectic products, and designer fabrics sourced locally and and beyond.

Downsize with ease

When it’s time for a change to a smaller residence – whether downsizing from the family home or helping an elderly parent move into a retirement village – enlist a team that specialises in guiding people through this emotional journey.

“Sorting through decades of memories, the kitchen cupboards, the tools in the garden shed, deciding what to keep, what to let go of, and how to do it all without feeling overwhelmed… it’s a lot,” says Dean Richards of Moving On Canterbury.

Dean, Laura, and their team specialise in supporting people through life’s big transitions — seniors moving into retirement living, downsizers seeking a simpler lifestyle, and empty nesters adjusting to a quieter home. “Many families think they’ll manage it themselves, imagining it will be easier or quicker,” Dean explains. “But in reality, there’s rarely time to pause and process what’s happening. Emotions build, tensions rise, and the move becomes heavier than expected.”

For seniors, downsizing isn’t just about packing boxes, it’s about letting go of a home filled with memories, decades of collected belongings, and sometimes even a sense of independence. Family members often experience similar emotions — guilt, overwhelm, conflict, and fear for their parents’ wellbeing. “They’re parenting their parents. Siblings often disagree on what should stay, what should go, or how quickly things should happen.” This is where professionals can help, giving families the time to sit, listen, and hold space for tears and stories. “We’ve seen the tears, the laughter, the guilt, the gratitude, and we understand how much is at stake when you’re helping someone you love take the next step.”

At Moving On Canterbury, the approach is unique. “We walk alongside people and their families, providing the extra hands, the patience, and the empathy that this kind of move really needs. We can do as much or as little as suits you — including trips to charity shops and the refuse centre — to leave the house sorted.”

For those facing a move, downsizing, or simply re-shaping life for a new stage, Moving On Canterbury offers not just hands-on help, but heart-led support every step of the way.

Thinking of downsizing, decluttering or moving?

Let us take the stress out of your move. At Moving On Canterbury, we specialise in helping seniors, empty nesters and families with the emotional and practical side of downsizing, decluttering, and relocating.

Chateau A North Canterbury

Step into the home of Jeni and Sebastian Sanderson and you’re struck by soaring ceilings and a large, majestic staircase.

WORDS: PATTIE PEGLER | IMAGES: DOROTHY MCLENNAN
Vintage Shop

In the living space a vast lounge is heated with a roaring open log fire and at one end a dining table and chairs to seat a party of many. It feels castle-like.

“It’s more of a chateau than a castle,” says Sebastian when I suggest this. He’s right, of course, castles are about crenellated walls and fortresses. The idea of the French chateau is very much about comfortable, welcoming country life on a grand scale.

An Axminster carpet is a cornucopia of reds and oranges, the ornate pressed tin ceilings give an instant sense of grandeur, and the assortment of armchairs and couches make it clear – this is not a home for show. It’s a home for living and entertaining, for welcoming friends and family.

Sebastian and Jeni bought the 100-acre farm in 1996, and they run cattle on the land. But, it was some years later, in the early 2000s, that they started to build their vast and meandering chateau style home. As keen followers of the arts and crafts movement, this was never going to be a cookie cutter house.

The work continues to this day – part of the fun is the project itself, rather than aiming for completion.

“It’s an outlet for my creative bent,” says Sebastian. A self-described “fan of gothic architecture” Sebastian has worked to ensure everything is done just right. “I have done it all myself. Nothing was really hard. I did have contractors and sometimes groups of friends helping.”

Every job has been a learning process from the leadlighting that he has used in some of the internal doors, to the placing of slate tiles – 14,000 of them to be precise – on the exterior roof. The open fire was heavily researched as the angle has to be exactly right to stop the room from becoming smoke filled. The sash windows were bought from the old nurses’ home in Timaru.

An intricately carved, French oak cabinet takes pride of place in the dining area.
The spacious lounge with a 3 metre high stud and open log fire.
Jeni and Sebastian and the chateau’s resident cat.
The ground floor library with an old style ladder to reach the higher shelves.

The People

The spaces are vast, and a grand staircase leads to a second floor. Here the rooms are out around a balcony-style corridor that runs around the entire upper floor. There are several bedrooms, a writing room, a second lounge with wonderful views over the surrounding landscape, and even turrets – one of which houses an art studio. Canvases and paints and brushes and spray cans jumble together in a carnival of colour and it’s easy to see how this unusual space with its views and light, could inspire. Both Sebastian and Jeni use this space, keen artists, they both have very different styles but delight in creativity.

Elsewhere, patterned rugs of all colours, shapes and sizes carpet the floor; the walls are hung with artwork and a cat slinks around. Everywhere you look there’s something to catch the eye.

If a home reflects its owners, then this one certainly ticks the boxes. It’s warm, welcoming and pretty quirky.

Light, bright kitchen with aga and large stainless steel top island.
Jeni and Sebastian, both keen artists, share a studio in one of the turrets.
Rolltop, freestanding bath takes centre stage in the vast bathroom.

Garden tips from the professionals

With spring in the air we wanted some helpful gardening tips. So we got in touch with Raewyn and Dave – who are the couple behind Willoughbridge in Rangiora. Here’s what they told us.

We have been making the most of the fine days to start prepping our vegetable garden. Digging in the green crop, checking seed supplies and chitting potatoes.

Your ‘to-do list’ could also include:

• Dig in compost well ahead of planting to avoid burning new plants.

• Finish pruning roses and fruit trees.

• Service lawn mower/clean and sharpen other garden tools.

• Plant out tender seedlings during Show Weekend, it’s the safest time to avoid late frosts here in North Canterbury.

Remember, one year’s seeding is seven years weeding, so keep on top of weeds as soon as they start to appear in spring. Don’t let a little job become a big job. But most of all – enjoy your garden. It’s good for the soul.

Based right here in North Canterbury, Mat and the team from Freedom Pools bring award-winning inground fibreglass pools to life. From first dive to final detail, they’ll transform your backyard into the ultimate staycation spot. Freedom Pools — turning dream backyards into reality.

As local MP I am of course a big advocate of the Waimakariri and I enjoy promoting the area to visitors. So I was excited to hear that the Oxford Forest Conservation

As the local MP for Waimakariri, I am often approached by parents, friends and family members concerned about the mental wellbeing of someone close to them.

New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.

That’s why, as Minister for Mental Health, I recently announced a national promotion campaign focused on getting Kiwis to Top Up with everyday actions that promote better mental health.

We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been undertaken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.

The Top Up campaign uses the evidence-based Five Ways to Wellbeing because we know it makes a di erence in the lives of many New Zealanders. We want more Kiwis, and communities, to take a proactive role in behaviour change that maintains and tops up their mental wellbeing.

Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists.Thisisjustonemorethingto put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism.

This is about common-sense tools and proven techniques that anyone can use, whether you’re on the farm, in the o ce, at school or at home with the kids. Applying the Five Ways to Wellbeing has been shown to aid recovery and manage long-term mental health issues.

I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning

We’re also turning the corner on reducing wait times and increasing the mental health workforce. Recent data shows the frontline Health NZ mental health workforce has grown around 10% since we came into government, and over 80% of people are being seen within three weeks for specialist services.

In other good news, the Government is delivering a Writing Action Plan to supercharge writing achievement and improve Kiwi children’s chance of success in school and beyond.

According to data collected last year, writing achievement declines as a child progresses through school, and we are committed to do something about this.

From the start of the 2026 school year, a new Writing Acceleration Tool will be available to support 120,000 students in Years 6 to 8 who are below expected writing levels.

Writing is a vital skill for everyone and the Make It Write action plan will strengthen the teaching of this vital skill, on top of the hour a day mandate and structured literacy we have already put in place.

Hayden O’Donnell Financial Advisor

With interest rates dropping, following the reserve bank further easing the official cash rate (OCR), many of us are wondering how best to manage our money. We caught up with local financial adviser Hayden O’Donnell for his insights.

Q: With recent interest rate decreases how can we make our savings work best for us?

Hayden: Lower interest rates on offer from the banks certainly feel discouraging, but there are still smart ways to make your money work harder. First, review the interest rates on your current savings accounts or fixed term investments. As they roll off their fixed terms you could cash in and/or diversify your funds. Using managed funds that mix in a portion of property and shares certainly provides the potential for higher earnings as economies continue to recover from a tough few years.

It is key to make the most of the funds you have in a manner you are comfortable with. We can tailor portfolios to meet your specific needs and help identify suitable investment options based on your personal circumstances and goals.

Q: What should we take into account when choosing how to invest our money?

Hayden: You can start by asking yourself what you’re investing for – is it long-term capital growth, a short-term goal, protecting your existing capital or income generation over retirement? If you’re unsure of a clear path, reach out and seek professional advice.

Skin Treatment

Words: Dr Peter Aspell

Excess Sweating (Hyperhydrosis)

Excess sweating that disrupts your daily life is called hyperhydrosis and a ects 1 in 20 of us.

It tends to begin during adolescence and most commonly a ects the armpits, hands, feet and face. It can be uncomfortable and cause significant embarrassment, anxiety and psychological trauma, sometimes limiting our career choices, social activities, relationships and self-image.

Hyperhydrosis can be due to an underlying health condition but often has no apparent cause. Fortunately there are options to treat this but the biggest challenge is that people don’t often seek medical advice due to embarrassment or perhaps not knowing that e ective treatment exists. There are a few deodorants available at pharmacies that are e ective for some people but most will find these only last a few hours or have limited e ect. There are also certain prescription medications like oxybutinin you can try but these are generally poorly tolerated because of their side e ects which include dry mouth, constipation, dizziness and blurred vision.

If you’ve tried di erent deodorants and have been cleared by a doctor for any underlying cause then Botox is an excellent treatment you may like to consider. It works by temporarily blocking the nerves that control the sweat glands in the a ected areas. These eventually recover and treatment for armpits with a cosmetic doctor typically last 12 months and is painless, safe and very e ective. Cosmetic doctors can also treat palms and soles of your feet which last about six months. Treatment takes about 30 minutes and are generally extremely well tolerated.

Dr Peter Aspell offers a skillset of advanced techniques and procedures exclusive to doctors. Confidentiality and privacy are paramount at Durham Health, nobody would know why you enter our medical facility
