Riverside lifestyle: e future

Be part of Greymouth’s next chapter in a high-quality development built for prestige and performance.

Greymouth Mawhera is undergoing a bold revitalisation. A resurgence of mining with proposed port infrastructure enabling Trans-Tasman trade, has seen the town diversifying into the new sectors of health, medical, hospitality and tourism services.

At the heart of the revitalisation is Whare Rua, a new four-storey, mixed-use building located at 2 Richmond Quay featuring premium commercial leasing opportunities, flexible spaces, and residential apartment living.

Designed by RM Designs, Whare Rua is built for performance, presence, and prestige. Strategically located on the riverfront and adjacent to civic developments, the new future-focused, architecturally designed, mixed-use complex is set to become a destination for innovation, enterprise, and quality living.

Developed by Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae and Arahura Holding, the development is a flagship project for the town, aiming to revitalise Greymouth’s CBD by creating

functional spaces, attracting investment, and reflecting the pride and ambition of the community.

Along with the recent library development, it begins to bring to life the community’s vision for a cohesive and revitalised CBD.

“Greymouth is evolving fast, and Whare Rua sits at the centre of this transformation,” says project manager Sam Summerton of Smart Project Management.

“The reasons to live and work on the Coast have been driven by nature, trails and raw wilderness. The town centre is now responding to the revitalisation with good eateries, crafts, medical facilities, retailers and hospitality. Accompanied with a strong sense of community and lower cost of living, there has never been a better time to consider Greymouth. Whare Rua o ers the opportunity to live and work amongst this with unparalleled views from the green hills that surround the town, to the river and beyond to the Mawhera bar and Tasman Sea,” Sam says.

Chairman of Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Waewae, Francois Tumahai, says many jobs and opportunities have already come from the planning phases of the development, and further jobs will follow with the construction of the building.

“This is a building that people will be proud of,” he says.

“When we contribute to the wider economy of our community, we are just doing our job.”

Our city... in bloom!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Christchurch is a city of resilience. Individuals standing up to their own battles, businesses adapting to the economy – even the shamefully neglected plant on my desk refuses to give up.

One of the most commonly used words to describe our city is “vibrant”, according to the Council’s 2025 Life in Christchurch survey, and that vibrancy is thanks to the passionately resilient communities around us. As humans, we’re wired to focus on the negative and it’s easy to feel absorbed by gloomy economic figures – but can we a ord to be anything less than resilient?

Across the city there’s a palpable lift in energy, and, although I’m confident the spring season is a large contributor to that, there’s nothing better than seeing a city full of irrepressible smiles despite a world full of worry.

Take the iconic Queen Anne Chocolates for example, which has gone through almost everything a business can in 100 years. From the fluctuation and instability of the 20th century where the brand was shut down and shelved, to the challenges that came with the Christchurch earthquakes and a pandemic. Managing director Sarah Adams (granddaughter of beloved baker and businessman Ernest Adams) revived her grandfather’s legacy when it needed it most – elevating the brand from treats shared at special occasions to an everyday luxury. Determination, resilience, and a deliciously moreish business niche, Sarah shares the story of Queen Anne Chocolates with deputy editor Tamara Pitelen on pages 12 and 13.

This innovation and evolution is mirrored in the local businesses that surround us, both through small start-ups and large corporations. Responding to a dramatically ever-changing environment is no mean feat, yet it’s something Cantabrians have faced and overcome time and time again. Cantabrians like hospitality ‘royalty’ Marty and Naomi Fuller, who have mastered the art of adapting and diversifying to meet changing customer needs over the years. This pair cherish community and it’s evident in the one they’ve built – read the story on page 10 and 11.

Meet Fullers

You would be hard pushed to find a Cantabrian who hasn’t stepped foot inside one of Marty Fuller’s venues over his 50-year career. From Christchurch to Picton and even up in Auckland, this man has stamped his mark on the country’s hospitality scene. His wife Naomi, on the other hand, has stepped foot across the finish line of the seven biggest marathons worldwide, in Tokyo, Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, New York City, and most recently Sydney.

While Naomi wakes at 5am to run or gym – whatever form of training she’s decided for the next trek she’ll tackle – Marty begins his day with breakfast and catching up on the latest news headlines. He exercises next, a walk or gym session, and then heads to set up shop. It’s the kind of refined, fine-tuned routine you would expect from a couple who set up award-winning venues like clockwork.

Over the years, Marty, with other partners, established Christchurch hotspots like The Bog, The Craic, and Trevinos. His career in hospitality is illustrious, but only the result of good old-fashioned hard work by a humble man. He’s held positions of leadership for decades with the Hospitality Association of New Zealand and other trusts. The match-up of Marty and Naomi? It was all because of an advert Marty placed in the paper – one that encouraged Naomi, who had worked multiple jobs in accounting and hospitality, to apply. “Best decision I ever made,” he smiles. Together they run The Elmwood Trading Co on Normans Road, a multi awardwinning venue famous for being the ‘best local’.

They’ll feed the family, pay the rent, fill up the car, all of that stuff, and if there’s anything left over, they’ll spend it on leisure activities.

Local is exactly where their strategy lies. “You can’t just expect people to walk into your businesses, you know. You have to go out into the community,” Marty explains. The Fullers support those that support them: sponsoring the Canterbury Jockey Club, Metropolitan Trotting Club, Jasi Swim Club, cricket, rugby, netball and tennis clubs, and schools like St Andrew’s College, St Bede’s College, and Christchurch Boys’ High School. “This industry is all about people,” Marty says.

Marty’s ethos is in treating every customer like his best friend. “You have got to love your customers, because if you don’t love them, someone else will.” He recounts the months that followed the Covid-19 lockdowns, when the country opened back up and the locals returned as if they’d never left. “You only win New Zealand’s ‘best local’ by having New Zealand’s best locals,” Marty explains. When first crowned the title in 2022, “We came back and shouted the pub and put on a whole lot of drinks and celebrated it with them.”

the

Fullers

If there’s any pair who know how to host, it’s Marty and Naomi Fuller, and it’s not all they can do. The trophy cabinet of one of Christchurch’s best hospitality duos holds more than a few shiny awards – it’s home to something you can only win after running all seven of the World Marathon Majors. Metropol editor Nina Tucker goes behind the glass.

Even so, the hospitality industry has been, and still is, one of the hardest hit in recent years. According to Centrix data, hospitality has seen 297 closures in the past year, a 49% increase year-on-year. “It’s not all monuments. We’ve had a few tombstones,” Marty reflects. Like many colleagues, he’s had to fight to get some businesses out of trouble – and it hasn’t just been Covid-19’s fault. He recounts the curveballs, from the share market crash of 1987 to the Global Financial Crisis of the 2000s. “Hospitality is very exposed to downturns in the economy, because we rely on the discretionary dollar. We get the last dollar,” he says. “They’ll feed the family, pay the rent, fill up the car, all of that stu , and if there’s anything left over, they’ll spend it on leisure activities.”

He explains the shift he’s noticed in eating and drinking habits during times of financial hardship: “Instead of going out once a week for a meal, they might go once a fortnight. Instead of going to a pub and buying pizzas, they’ll get a takeaway pizza. Instead of going to the pub four nights a week and having a beer, they might go two nights a week, but they’ll still go to the bottle store and get a dozen beers and take them home. So they’re still drinking four nights a week. They’re just doing it di erently. They’re doing it cheaper, and pubs tend to bear the brunt of that.”

So Marty and Naomi diversified their o ering. “You know, 30 or 40 years ago your food was probably a pie warmer, and you had Lion Brown and Lion lager on tap. That was it. The industry today is unrecognisable from 40 years ago.” On their famous fundraising quiz nights, Marty laughs at the transformation. “It’s not like when we were young, we were doing bottle drives, chopping wood and painting old ladies’ houses.” One thing won’t change. “You’ll never have, well, not in my life, robots serving behind the bar.”

LIFE OUTSIDE

The Fullers live a wholesome life beyond serving beers and balancing books.

A blended family of six children and 10 grandchildren, a holiday home in the Marlborough Sounds, and a breadth of personal passions. They both exercise often, “because that’s important in this industry, it has its temptations,” and they’re committed to supporting each other’s endeavours.

Marty loves golf and runs international rugby tours. Naomi runs. When her daughter moved to England, the skilled runner Naomi set a goal to run the London Marathon. Having always run for the fun of friendship and co ee dates with her running partner afterwards, she’d ticked o Christchurch and Auckland marathons. In 2019 the London race introduced her to the World Abbott Majors. “I did London, and then realised that there’s a bigger world out there.” She was raring to race in New York City when Covid-19 hit. Naomi thought it was all over.

A virtual marathon saw her accepted to compete in the New York City marathon in 2022. Her next stop was Berlin. She completed the race in September 2023 – rewarded with a free beer at the finish line, naturally – and the pair then explored Paris for a few weeks before picking up a tour Marty had organised for the Rugby World Cup held in France. She soon completed Chicago and Tokyo, “I’ve sped up in the past couple of years. For one, in case I get injured, and then just because life’s so short,” Naomi says. Marty showed me a video of Naomi 300 metres from the finish line at the Boston marathon. “She was so elated. She crossed the finish line and just started completely breaking down and sobbing her heart out.”

Picking up an Abbott World Marathon Majors Six Star Medal isn’t even the best part. In 2019, Naomi came across a post online that said the Olympic Association would hold a special marathon for all at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games. All you had to do was sign up through the running app Strava and track your mileage. Without giving it much thought, she did. Over the next four years, her countless kilometres added up until the pair were sitting with friends at the Rugby World Cup in 2023 and got an email. Naomi had done enough running to qualify for a spot on the start line. She was just one of two New Zealanders invited. That email quickly became the best 65th birthday present she could’ve got.

The race began close to midnight. “As many people watched this ‘marathon for all’ in the middle of the night as they did for the two main marathons in the morning. The streets were lined with people at 2 and 3am,” Marty remembers from the sidelines. Naomi doesn’t show o her Olympic medal but her grandchildren do at show and tell, she laughs.

The Fullers aren’t slowing down. There’s more marathons to run and locals to share a beer with. “We still come to work seven days a week. That’s the business,” Marty says, and it’s one they love.

In 2025, Christchurch company Queen Anne Chocolates is celebrating its 100th birthday. Owned by the granddaughter of one of New Zealand’s most iconic bakers, Ernest Adams, Sarah Adams tells Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen about this hard-won milestone.

The booklover’s destination

Whether it’s Adult Fiction, NonFiction, New Zealand, Religion, Classics, Poetry, Young Adult or Children’s tales, we will have just what you want. We also specialise in magazines and greeting cards, plus stationery, jigsaws and professional artist supplies.

The year is 1921, and a bright-eyed, young Ernest Adams is striding up Tuam Street to answer an advertisement for a bakery up for sale. The youngest of seven sons from a family of bakers in Somerset, England, Ernest is a recent immigrant looking to make a life in the bustling city of Christchurch.

The bakery’s owner, Hugh Bruce, built his business from the ground up and was of an age to consider selling. Instead, though, on meeting the dynamic young Ernest, Hugh o ers him a partnership. A deep friendship is sparked, which becomes the basis of a thriving business and is the seed of what was to become the Ernest Adams baking empire.

From successful bakeries, the entrepreneurial pair expanded into chocolates and in 1925, the Queen Anne brand was born (originally Hugh’s idea, ironic given that he was diabetic and couldn’t eat chocolate). At its height, there were 100 Queen Anne Chocolate retail shops and agents throughout New Zealand.

Fast forward 100 turbulent years to 2025, and the brand is celebrating its centenary, thanks to the tenacity and vision of Ernest’s determined granddaughter, Sarah Adams. In 1976, the doors of the Queen Anne Chocolate factory were closed, and the brand was indefinitely shelved. Sarah revived the business in 1998, taking it from strength to strength. “When I first started, people said to me, ‘Why are you doing this? You won’t have a business in five years,’” Sarah says.

THE BAKING GENE

Sarah’s journey into the world of confectionery began with the Ernest Adams factory.

“As a very little girl, I loved going to the factory with my grandparents. After my grandfather retired, every week he and my grandmother would go. They knew everybody by name; he’d walk around and ask them how they were. It was a real treat if I could go, because people would slip me a bit of this and that. In the icing department they had those beautiful little icing flowers, I’d come away with a handful of them.” Later, as a teenager in the early 1980s, Sarah joined Ernest Adams as a baking apprentice.

“Technically, I was what was called an adult apprentice, because I was in my late teens. In those days, most apprentices started at 15,” she recalls. “I was one of only two girls doing baker apprenticeships in the whole of New Zealand at the time.” After her apprenticeship, Sarah explored chocolate-making while working at a Swiss bakery in Melbourne. “I didn’t realise how important that experience would become,” she says. Years later, after returning to New Zealand, she found herself asking: what next?

Fate intervened in the form of an unusual request: Sarah was asked to write a short biography of her grandfather for the New Zealand Dictionary of Biography. That research ignited something deeper. “The whole thing was only about four pages, yet it took me six months to write. I got so distracted by the history. I learned so much about him, his life and what he did. I went to libraries, looking through the old microfiche, and found old ads for Queen Anne, and I found contacts. As well, people would keep

saying to me, ‘Whatever happened to Queen Anne chocolates?’

Sarah’s biography project evolved into the decision to bring back Queen Anne. “Over those six months, I thought to myself, ‘Ah, chocolates are just like cake.’ So I made myself a list. ‘I’m going to need the recipes, the packaging, and someone who can make it for me.’ Then I pretty much wrote myself a marketing plan for contract manufacturing and set it up.” By Christmas of 1998, Queen Anne boxed chocolates were back on the shelves.

There were hurdles, though. The Queen Anne trademark was owned by a West Coast ice cream company, so Sarah struck a deal, securing the chocolate rights in exchange for helping them relaunch Queen Anne Ice Cream using the original recipes. Though the ice cream venture fizzled due to complex frozen logistics, Sarah eventually bought the brand outright.

For the first few years, Queen Anne operated through contract manufacturing. Everything changed after the Christchurch earthquakes in 2011. Sarah and her team moved into a bricks-andmortar factory, learning the machines and crafting chocolates in-house. “I read all the manuals on how to use the machines, but doing it yourself, that’s a di erent story.” It was a leap of faith, but a natural evolution to do the manufacturing in Christchurch.

Queen Anne’s success is a testament to the loyalty of its customers and the innovation that has helped it stay relevant over the years. “We’re not just about Christmas or Easter anymore. Our everyday products, like the fish bites, have really made a di erence. It’s helped us move away from a seasonal business model, and now we’re more of an everyday luxury,” she says.

NOD TO THE PAST

Today, Sarah no longer works the factory floor. “I’m more the technical backup now,” she says. She’s writing a Queen Anne Essentials manual to pass on decades of experience. “Making chocolate is half art, half science,” she reflects. “And it’s not always easy. It takes time to get it right.”

As Queen Anne marks its 100th anniversary this year, the team has rolled out a series of celebrations to honour the milestone. Last month, a major exhibition was held at Ballantynes department store, showcasing the Queen Anne collection of vintage boxes, photographs, and treasured memorabilia, including an original 50-year-old box of chocolates. Untouched. How? Someone discovered the box in the bottom of their freezer and gifted it back to Sarah. The exhibition is now on show at the Queen Anne o ce. They’re even reviving the famous Queen Anne ‘Turtles’, which are round caramels topped with a half walnut and dipped in chocolate, for a limited edition run. It’s these small nods to the past that resonate with their customers. “People still remember buying Queen Anne chocolates for anniversaries, birthdays. It’s more than just a product; it’s about people. Their memories, their milestones, their family traditions.”

The final question must be, does Sarah eat chocolate every day? “I do, how could I not? My favourite? It has to be our marshmallow. If I had to choose a flavour, I’d say the pineapple marshmallow. The milk chocolate with that tangy pineapple flavour, it’s just so good.”

Queen screens our screens

Beloved actress across Australasia, mother, podcaster, and two-time charity ambassador, Antonia Prebble has earned a platform she now uses to give back. Metropol editor Nina Tucker caught up with the Outrageous Fortune and Westside star ahead of her role emceeing for Breast Cancer Cure’s Fashion for a Cure charity event in October.

When Antonia Prebble recounted her involvement with charity initiatives over the years, I was sure

New Zealand had made the right person famous.

“It is so true that we are at our most human when we’re in service to other people and not thinking about ourselves.” Years of time and energy given without expecting any kudos in return, Antonia believes it’s a pure “privilege” to be able to help. Her approach is entirely wholesome – she finds it as rewarding as she hopes it is for the cause.

Antonia first joined Breast Cancer Cure as an ambassador six years ago – a decision that needed no convincing. “All of their fundraising goes into research, and they believe that research is the greatest weapon into finding a cure. It just made sense to me.”

Like many, Antonia watched countless people close to her battle the disease. “Some have made it through, and others haven’t.”

At its core purpose, Fashion for a Cure is a fashion runway event held nationwide, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for breast cancer research. Beyond that, “it’s such a fun, meaningful, beautiful, moving night out,” Antonia says. “The designers we have in this country are just absolute world class,” she adds, as someone who always finds herself disappointed that shopping overseas never matches up to what she can find back home.

“I have quite close relationships with a lot of designers, because I’m always popping into their work rooms to borrow dresses, usually for events,” Antonia explains. “Breast Cancer Cure is really aligned with fashion and fashion designers, so it felt like an authentic alignment and a no brainer.”

At Ōtautahi’s only Fashion for a Cure for the year, Antonia will be joined by fellow ambassador Lou Heller to guide the night. Her connection with charity, whether Breast Cancer Cure or through her 12 years as an ambassador with Variety Children’s Charity (like leading a cycling fundraiser through Vietnam for families a ected by the Christchurch earthquakes), is what fills up her cup. “I’m always in tears. I’m just so moved by the amount of heart and generosity and compassion that is shown at those events.”

PRESS REWIND

As a child, Antonia didn’t waste any time getting into character. “I came out of the womb knowing that I wanted to be an actress,” she remembers. “As soon as I could read, I would scour the newspaper looking for auditions.” She grew up on the stage performing in theatre, and by the time she was 11, Antonia had herself an agent. “It’s such a Kiwi story,” she says fondly. “My best friend’s family lived next door to an acting agent.” At 12, she landed her first role on television. Antonia had her foot in the door at just the right time to become a child actor. That all changed when she reached her late teens.

“I suddenly stopped getting work,” Antonia recalls, when met with a much larger pool of competition in the young adult arena. She remembers lying in bed one night, feeling so worried about the future. “Acting was the only thing I had ever wanted to do, and now that just wasn’t happening. I was miserable at the thought of having to find another career, settling for something that I wouldn’t find nearly as fulfilling.” At her lowest low and about to throw in the towel, Antonia gave the audition for Outrageous Fortune a go. Needless to say, becoming Loretta West changed her life – shaping that age transition for her because she was doing it on screen.

Even two iconic roles haven’t made her acting career linear – especially in a small New Zealand industry where it’s easy to become overexposed, Antonia says. She shares the challenges of being an actress. “There’s so much hope that comes with this job. You get an audition and you can’t help but think what it would be like if you got it.” It’s like an open home. You enter the house and envision yourself living there – cooking, decorating – and then your o er falls short. “There’s no middle ground,” she laughs. There’s no obvious trajectory either. How can you plan for a promotion when

students entering Year 1 or Year 7 in 2026.

screens

screens

the position doesn’t exist? “The shows that you might be cast in in the future just don’t exist yet.” Thankfully, she’s “softening and broadening” her ideas of what her life and career could look like – unlike her more fearful younger self.

REDEFINING HERSELF

The post-pandemic lull of the arts industry came at a time that aligned with Antonia’s stage of life. Whether by luck or perhaps good karma, it meant she could be the mother she’d always dreamed of without feeling like she was sacrificing her career. “It’s always been a really important value to be a real present mother, and filming hours are just not conducive to that. Being away for 12 hours at a time, for many weeks at a time, it’s just not the mum I want to be.”

At this point I start to wonder. Antonia likens her responsibilities as a mother, actress, ambassador, podcaster, public figure, and someone expanding her professional focus into producing a few new television shows to… quiet time? “It does sound like I’m really busy, but I don’t feel overloaded at the moment. I’m definitely someone who likes having a few balls in the air. That’s what keeps me really stimulated and interested and makes me feel like I’m moving forward in the direction that I want to be going in,” she says with a smile.

I decide she has a knack for exceptional time management. With super-husband Dan who she met on set of Westside, Antonia works each commitment into her schedule, and the pair balance the duties of primary caregiver when the other is busy. “I don’t feel like it’s overwhelming because most of it is self directed. I’m choosing to take on these things,” she says. With their children Freddie and Gus now at school and pre-school, “we both feel like we’re kind of able to look up from the trenches out to the horizon”, and pursue less domestic, more creative projects. Money smart women

Money is one of the last great taboos. Many of us don’t like to talk about the gritty detail - what we make and what we do with it. But for Angela Webb, who heads up Bayleys Canterbury’s residential investment division, talking money with her team is always on the agenda.

Angela holds regular one-on-one meetings with her all-female team and finances are a key part of those conversations. They have very open discussions about how they manage their money and their individual goals – whether that’s travelling, buying property or paying o a credit card – nothing is o the table.

“They all know their basic monthly costs and I encourage them all to have emergency funds so they can live without income for up to three months,” says Angela. “Agents are taught so much on how to sell, but nothing on how to manage your money.”

It was during one of these meetings, salesperson Charlotte Heaslip remembers Angela asking her “Right, when are you buying a house?”

For Charlotte, who was then an administrative assistant, home ownership seemed out of reach. “I was 21 at the time

and I thought she [Angela] had lost the plot,” she recalls. “I had KiwiSaver, but other than that I had approximately $500 in my savings account.”

But Angela’s strong guidance and support helped Charlotte make decisions. Within a few months of that conversation, she had bought her first house.

Angela’s team all know their term deposits from their investment funds. Yet that is just part of a bigger picture. Angela also supports them in their careers and guides them to think about their goals, so they are working towards them, not drifting along.

“Angela never talks to you about things in a judgy way,” says Grace Bruere who has been on Team Webb for two years. “She just explains things to you.”

“She is a mentor, friend, therapist and huge motivator for me,” says Charlotte.

Financial freedom

Angela herself realised that with financial independence comes freedom. As a horse-mad young woman, she spent a year working near London at a livery stable she got free riding lessons during the day and in the evenings the horses would be prepared for their owners to turn up and ride them. She realised at that point that she wanted to be one of the professional women from London, turning up to ride after work, rather than one of the stable workers.

“I thought right, I need to make some money,” she says.

She returned to New Zealand, studied architectural design and then headed to Dublin to work for an architectural firm. It was whilst working in Ireland, during the Celtic boom, that she bought her first properties in New Zealand – sight unseen. At the time she was also reading widely on financial management and investment.

After returning to New Zealand 20 years ago, she began working in real estate and has been with Bayleys for the past 13 years.

Empowering women

Angela has worked under some great leaders, first during her time in Dublin and later at Bayleys, where Pete Whalan became an important mentor who greatly shaped her career. She’s learnt the importance of good workplace culture and the way in which strong leaders can guide and manage their team. “These experiences have shaped my own approach to leadership as a woman,” she says.

She is now firmly focused on supporting and mentoring other women, helping her team navigate their careers in what is still, largely, a male world. They often encounter attitudes that are very di erent to those faced by their male colleagues. Like dealing with people at open homes who can be dismissive or even rude.

“Being in real estate means you’ll occasionally be treated badly by people who don’t see the value in what we do,” she explains.

“And as a young woman, you can face the added challenge of people thinking it’s okay to speak to you that way. I teach my team how to disarm those situations so they don’t upset the whole energy of the open home.”

“One thing I noticed, for example, is that all the trainers are male,” says Angela. “But men can be more direct than women when it comes to things like negotiations. Women really need to be better than men at reading the room and learn when to push but also when not to overstep the mark. It’s a fine art.”

These are the kind of things that Angela helps her team to manage with good mentorship and guidance rather than stifling personalities. She encourages a strong culture in the team and they do fun things like swimming with dolphins, celebrating their successes and are not afraid to show a little emotion when something gets them down.

“I have been told I am too soft in the past,” says Angela. “It annoyed me the first time someone said that, but later I realised I don’t mind being called soft as I get results. For me that is more important. I don’t see tears as a failing or a weakness, it’s just a way of handling stress or frustration that comes with business. We cry, we move on and often we have a laugh about it a few days later.”

Listening to Angela’s team talking about their careers and their financial goals – it’s clear, these young women are going places.

“Being part of an all female team means a workplace with encouragement and support, where everyone is given the opportunity to grow,” says Hayley Hedworth, business manager. “Angela’s leadership fosters this culture and inspires confidence. We all feel empowered to succeed.”

Thanks to Angela’s mentorship, the future looks bright for the Team Webb women. They are utterly professional, utterly female and utterly independent.

Tips for the first home buyer

So you want to buy your first home?

We asked Angela for some tips.

• Look beyond the suburbs you already know and be prepared to start small. Your first home is a stepping stone.

• Start contributing to your KiwiSaver as early as possible. You’ll need three years of consistent payments before you can withdraw for a home deposit.

• Banks will want to see the last three months of your bank statements. So aim to have three months of sensible, clean spending before you apply. This means no obvious frittering away of money on takeaways, streaming services and AfterPay items.

• You can count flatmate income when applying for a mortgage. So this means you can consider a home where you can rent out a room to help cover costs.

• If you’re planning an OE, consider buying a property before you go. You can rent it out while you’re away, and when you return it’s still yours, to live in, sell, or keep as a rental.

• Be careful who you take property buying advice from. Unless someone has purchased in the last 5 years, their information is often out of date.

• Get mortgage preapproval before you start looking. That way you’re ready to go when you see the right place.

• Don’t be afraid to tick o some conditions before submitting your o er. Sometimes a cleaner o er can trump a higher price.

There’s no business like shoe business and no-one knows that better than Belinda Blanchfield.

With an obsession comparable to that of Sex of the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, Belinda was born to surround herself with shoes. With her family, she opened Issimo Christchurch in Merivale, a women’s footwear and fashion accessory boutique.

including Mara Bini, O cine, Accatino, Rebecca Balducci and many more. “Not to forget our wonderful New Zealand designers Kathryn Wilson and Saben who have been with us for over 10 years,” she adds.

With a thriving online site, Belinda has begun winding down her bricks and mortar o ering. Find an Issimo pop-up at The Colombo Mall, with end of lines and last pairs of shoes and accessories.

Stocking brands exclusive to New Zealand such as Oxitaly, Belinda’s focus was always on finding the best locally and internationally for her discerning customers. “Oxitaly still holds a strong place in our hearts, as it does for the repeat customer,” Belinda says. New colours and styles add to their growing collection of beautiful footwear. “It makes us so happy that customers love them as much as we do.” This owner-operated team have sourced brands from across Europe during their travels, issimo.co.nz

Matcha made in heaven

Have we all gone mad for matcha? Metropol writer Indiana Bell investigates Christchurch’s insatiable thirst for the popular green drink.

In the midst of a milky beverage, miniature icebergs bob. Milk and matcha react together, submerged in a cloudy sea of white and green. Throughout the drink, strawberries bloom on a vibrant grassy meadow backdrop. “Your iced strawberry matcha,” the waitress announces.

Raising the glass, you inhale its nutty-tinged fragrance. As you take a sip, you taste deep, earthy tones balanced with the syrupy sweetness of strawberry. The flavour lingers, leaving you refreshed and recharged.

Whether it’s drinks or desserts, matcha’s flavour has infused co ee shop menus globally. The initially considered ‘exotic’ green powder in the West has now become trendy, and especially popular in Christchurch cafés.

Sta at Makan Café on Manchester Street have noticed that “demand for matcha has definitely increased over time,”

as matcha lattes became trendy in response to social media influencing. Since 2024, the coveted green powder has been hard to find due to global shortages driven by soaring demand and reduced crop yields from climate change and weather events.

The Japanese powdered green tea is deemed a ‘superfood’ for its health benefits. Various studies have shown matcha can improve concentration, memory and perception; alleviate stress and anxiety and reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. In fact, one cup of matcha is associated with a 10% lower risk of developing coronary heart disease. This is mainly due to its high level of antioxidants, which even help to fight against cancer. It is also anti-inflammatory and may aid in weight loss.

O ering a vibrant array of flavours, matcha is here to stay and widely available in Christchurch. Try a few to find your favourite.

Cycling child for cancer

At

age 71, former MP Nuk Korako is back on his bike to raise money for children with cancer.

He’s no stranger to pedalling for a good cause.

Former MP and Ngāi Tahu Canterbury Regional Councillor Nuk Korako (pictured) is well-known for his community-driven charity rides. He has already cycled 1417km this year to raise funds for the Cholmondeley Children’s Centre, and last year he cycled 1570km to support a young woman’s life-changing jaw reconstruction.

His latest venture, though, is his biggest challenge yet. As part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, Nuk is cycling more than 3500km, from Perth to Melbourne, to raise funds and awareness for children facing cancer in New Zealand and Australia.

The ride, which will take him about a month at an average of 120 to 150km per day, started on Saturday 20 September. Nuk set o from Perth Children’s Hospital on the ANZCARE Inaugural Cycle Ride for Child Cancer. The ANZCARE initiative – standing for Australia and New Zealand Child Cancer Advocacy, Research and Empowerment –aims to unite the two countries behind one cause.

not alone.”

Nuk is sharing his ride diary every day. Children in hospitals and schools across both countries are able to follow his progress live, with satellite tracking technology enabling them to cheer him on and send messages of encouragement.

I can’t change a diagnosis. I can’t take away the pain. But I can ride every day, every kilometre, to honour their journey and to show them, and their whānau, that they are not alone.

“Child cancer is a journey no whānau or family chooses,” says Nuk. “This ride is about giving hope, raising awareness, and reminding families in New Zealand and Australia that they are not alone. I can’t change a diagnosis. I can’t take away the pain. But I can ride every day, every kilometre to honour their journey and to show them, and their whānau, that they are

“The hardships of this journey are real. Long, narrow roads. Loaded road trains and trucks thundering past. The sun beating down across exposed horizons where there’s no shelter for hundreds of kilometres. Some days, the mental battle to keep pushing forward will be as tough as the ride itself. And yet, this challenge pales in comparison to what children with cancer endure every day,” Nuk says.

All of Nuk’s own travel, flights, and bike logistics are being covered by the Korako Family Trust, with road support assisted by sponsors including Maui Campervans, Consilium, WattWheels, Signtech, Scenic Hotel Group, TrackMe NZ and Inspire Me Women. This ensures that 100% of every donation goes directly to Child Cancer Foundation in New Zealand and Children’s Cancer Foundation in Australia.

Move over Martha

Want to give hosting queen Martha Stewart a run for her money? This recipe for a buttercup squash and brown rice salad from The Hungry Cook by Olivia Galletly is sure to impress. The generous amount of fresh herbs enhance the flavour of the sweet baked squash and the mild spices mean the dish works with a range of meat. Serve it hot, warm or cold, alongside slow-cooked lamb or steak (see page 39).

Ingredients (serves 4-5)

• 1.3kg buttercup squash

• 3 Tbsp olive oil

• 1 Tbsp mild curry powder

• 2 tsp cumin seeds

• 1/2 tsp table salt

• 1/4 tsp cracked pepper

• 1 cup brown rice

• 2 medium red onions, quartered or 7 shallots, about 300g

• 8 fresh dates, roughly chopped

Herb dressing

• 1 clove garlic, crushed

• 1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander

• 1/2 cup chopped fresh mint

• 1/2 cup chopped fresh parsley

• 1/2 cup olive oil

• 3 Tbsp lemon juice

• 1 tsp runny honey

• Sea salt and cracked pepper

To serve

• 35g almonds

• Handful fresh herbs such as coriander, mint or parsley

Method

1. Preheat oven to 170°C fan-bake or 190°C regular bake and line 1-2 oven trays with baking paper.

2. Cut the squash into wedges about 3cm thick. Remove the seeds but keep the skin on. This will help the wedges to keep their shape. Place on the prepared tray and drizzle over oil, spices, salt and pepper. Massage into the squash and roast for 15 minutes. Turn the squash over and roast for a further 15 minutes.

3. While the squash is roasting, cook the rice and make the dressing. Rinse the rice in cold water and drain. Place in a rice cooker or pot, add 500ml cold water and half a teaspoon salt. Turn on the rice cooker or bring the pot to the boil. If using a pot, cover, and gently simmer for 25 minutes. Remove from heat and stand covered for 5 minutes.

4. In a food processor, blitz together the herb dressing ingredients. Peel and chop the onions into quarters or peel the shallots and halve any larger ones. Add to the squash in the roasting dish along with the dates and roast for a further 15 minutes or until the onions have softened.

5. Place the almonds on a small oven tray and roast for 8 minutes, then roughly chop.

6. Spoon half of the herb dressing into the brown rice and toss to combine. Spoon onto a serving plate and top with roasted pumpkin, shallots, dates and almonds. Drizzle over the remaining dressing and finish with a few fresh herbs.

skirt steak with jalapeño Barbecued salsa verde

A great summer barbecue dish, skirt steak is quick, easy to cook, and relatively cheap. It’s particularly tasty topped with this spicy, tangy green sauce. This recipe, from The Hungry Cook by Olivia Galletly, suggests serving the steak with roast baby potatoes, but it works well with a range of sides and salads.

Ingredients (serves 4)

Roast potatoes

• 800g baby potatoes

• 2 Tbsp olive oil

• Sea salt and cracked pepper

• 1 Tbsp butter

Jalapeño salsa verde

• 2 cups coriander leaves

• 1/4 cup parsley leaves

• 1/4 cup mint leaves

• 1 spring onion, finely chopped

• 2 Tbsp chopped pickled jalapeños

• 2 Tbsp jalapeño pickle juice

• 1/3 cup olive oil

• 1 Tbsp lemon juice

• 1 clove garlic, crushed

• 1 pinch table salt

Skirt steak

• 800g skirt steak

• 1 Tbsp olive oil

• Sea salt and cracked pepper

Method

1. Preheat oven to 220°C fan-bake and line an oven tray with baking paper.

2. Place the potatoes in a large pot of salted water. Bring to the boil and cook for 15 minutes.

3. Drain the potatoes then place on the prepared tray. Drizzle with oil and season with salt and pepper. Roast for 20-25 minutes or until golden.

4. In a food processor, blitz together the salsa verde ingredients.

5. Rub the skirt steak with oil, salt and pepper.

6. Bring the barbecue grill to a high heat. Grill the skirt steak on both sides for about 2-3 minutes for medium rare, for a piece about 2.5cm thick. If the steak is thinner, cook for 30 seconds less and if it’s thicker, cook for 30-60 seconds more.

7. Remove from the heat and place on a plate. Cover loosely with tinfoil and set aside for 10 minutes to rest.

8. Thinly slice the steak then transfer to a serving plate Top with a few spoonfuls of salsa verde and serve the remaining on the side. Serve the potatoes topped with butter and an extra sprinkle of salt.

Asparagus

with poached eggs & hollandaise sauce

Packed with health benefits, asparagus is rich in fibre, vitamin K, and folate, and supports healthy digestion and detoxification. Paired with a silky poached egg and classic hollandaise sauce, this elegant dish is perfect for a leisurely brunch or a light dinner.

Ingredients

• 1 bunch of asparagus, trimmed

• Salt, for blanching

• Olive oil or butter (optional)

• 2 fresh, free-range eggs

• 1 Tbsp white vinegar (optional, helps whites set)

Method

1. Prepare the asparagus:

For the hollandaise sauce:

• 2 egg yolks

• 1 Tbsp lemon juice

• 100g unsalted butter, melted

• Salt and white pepper, to taste

• Cayenne or paprika (optional)

3. Make the hollandaise sauce:

Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the asparagus for 2 to 4 minutes (depending on thickness), until bright green and just tender. Drain and transfer to an ice bath or rinse under cold water to stop cooking. Optional: Sauté lightly in butter or olive oil before serving.

2. Make the poached eggs:

Fill a saucepan with 10cm of water. Bring it to a simmer (not a full boil). Add vinegar if using. Crack each egg into a small bowl. Swirl the water to create a vortex and gently slide in an egg. Poach for 2.5 to 3.5 minutes until the whites are set and yolk is still soft. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel.

THE

TAB, gaming, and wholesale liquor outlet onsite. Four versatile spaces for events, weddings and meetings. 26 fully serviced warm and comfortable units, ample parking, and free Wi-Fi on beautiful grounds. Eat Local. Drink Local. Stay Local.

Stovetop method: egg yolks and lemon juice in a heat-safe bowl over a pot of gently simmering water (don’t let the bowl touch the water). Whisk constantly until it thickens slightly (don’t scramble). Slowly drizzle in warm melted butter while whisking until thick and creamy. Season with salt, white pepper, and a pinch of cayenne. Blender shortcut: Add egg yolks and lemon juice to a blender. Blend for 10 seconds, then slowly drizzle in hot melted butter while blending. Season to taste. To serve, place warm asparagus on a plate and top with the poached egg. Spoon warm hollandaise over the egg and asparagus. Garnish with fresh herbs (chives, dill, or parsley) and black pepper. Optional additions include shaved parmesan, crispy bacon, or a slice of toasted sourdough underneath.

A sign times of the

“In times of uncertainty –including today’s cost-of-living pressures and geopolitical unrest – consumers tend to gravitate toward stability in design,” says Davina Harper, Dulux’s colour and design specialist.

Colour has the power to lift spirits, o er emotional reassurance and bring a sense of calm into our homes,” Davina says, which is why you’ll find these comforting hues in Dulux’s colour forecast for 2026. In response to continued global uncertainty and digital fatigue, the curation of three distinct palettes sees a rise in calming and connecting colours. Curated with extensive research across local and global trends, these hues reflect a universal yearning for wellness, stability and reconnection. Davina translates her yearly visit to Milan Design Week into inspiration that captures a new way for New Zealanders to live at home. This year’s forecast champions warm earthbased neutrals, rich burnt oranges, caramels, and greens such as sage, moss and spearmint. Soft pinks and vintage rose tones also feature, alongside tender pastels and muted berry shades. “Among the changes this year is the rising dominance of spearmint green, complemented by soft earthy pinks that pair beautifully with browns and burgundies,” Davina notes. “These trends mirror our collective desire for grounding and positivity. In contrast, brighter colours are used sparingly to bring personality and optimism into spaces. These include playful berry hues, pinks and rich accents such as burnt orange and vintage pink, layered over tactile materials.”

INTERIÉURS ANCIENS

ETHEREAL

The “most expressive palette”, Ethereal is feminine and whimsical –a magical celebration of nature’s nurturing power.

“The materials feel soft and inviting – like soft oak, bleached wood, and plush fabrics with gentle botanical designs. Shiny surfaces like glass and chrome bring light, whilst sand-blasted textures soften the shine, creating a dreamy, layered look,” Davina says.

ELEMENTAL EVOKE

A calm, grounded response to the overstimulation of modern life, Elemental is rooted in anti-burnout culture. Subtle layers of grey bring structure while dark, charcoal tones add depth and dimension. Clean lines, raw concrete, polished marble – materials purposefully combine style and practicality with an industrial edge.

Favouring the eclectic aesthetic, Evoke showcases vintage-inspired materials and curated clutter alongside deep comforting tones. Optimistic, bold and expressive, the palette channels individuality and emotional warmth – a reflection in the rise of antique and one-of-a-kind shopping. “Chrome and aluminium replace gold, whilst bold colour layering and clashing prints add texture, charm and a sense of layered character,” Davina advises.

Our pick

From family fun day to all things interiors, there’s so much to see at the Canterbury Home Show. This is what’s on our To Do list…

The daily seminar series is where industry experts share their advice, inspiration, ideas and knowledge to complete your next project. Thinking about selling your house? Head along to hear Anshul Gupta from Harcourts Holmwood advise on getting your house ready for sale by maximising small changes. After lower energy bills? Then Dean Murrell from Smart Solar and Robert Whitehouse of Energy E cient Homes are the presentations to catch.

Got the kids with you? Sunday is family fun day with a load of free entertainment for the littlies, including face-painting, colouring competitions, and paint-a-rock challenges.

Famished from all the excitement? Tempt your taste buds at The Pantry. This corner is a haven for foodies and kitchen connoisseurs. Then, once you’ve got your steps in by walking around the show, head to the on-site café to refuel and refresh before going back for another circuit of the exhibitors.

The Canterbury Home Show takes place from 17 – 19 October at the Wolfbrook Arena, Addington from 10am to 5pm daily.

Be proactive: keep leaves, rodents, birds, snow and hail out with Gutter Solutionz metal mesh gutter guards.

The gutter guards can be custom fitted to most roof types and gutters. Being manufactured locally also means Gutter Solutionz gutter guards can be supplied at up to one metre wide, in a colour to match your roof.

Clean that carpet

Imagine a cosy evening on the couch with snacks, drinks and children or pets romping around the living room.

In an instant, food, drink and stains find their way onto furniture, upholstery, and carpet. It’s one of life’s biggest frustrations – and can be an even bigger risk. A build-up of dirt, dust, and potential allergens can be hazardous to health. Vacuuming may remove surface dirt, yet cannot penetrate deep into fibres to eliminate stubborn stains, and bacteria. That’s why professional carpet and upholstery cleaning is essential, says Anna Flanagan, co-owner of Garden City and North Canterbury ChemDry.

Anna and husband Paul took over the Canterbury franchises early in the year and have inherited a team of experienced technicians and sta . “ChemDry as a brand has a proven reputation over 40 years,” says Anna. “We o er the same known key services – carpet, upholstery, rug, and mattress cleaning, mould remediation and restoration after fire or flood damage with 24/7 service for flood restoration. We are delighted with our customer feedback and especially to have won the Customer Excellence Award for ChemDry NZ at the last company conference.”

Anna explains that the ChemDry process is di erent from other cleaning processes. “The plant-based carbonisation technology uses a fraction of the water of typical steam cleaning, which means a shorter drying time. Regular cleaning is the key to making sure you get the best longevity for your carpet.” See ChemDry at the Home Show from 17 – 19 October.

Why should you regularly clean carpets and upholstered furniture?

• More stubborn dirt is loosened.

• Unsightly stains disappear.

• Pet hair and harmful mites are removed.

• Upholstered furniture and carpets continue to look good, their lifetime is extended.

Statement tiles

Bold ceramics are being used to inject joy and personality into walls and floors. In particular, thin rectangular tiles, also known as finger tiles, are trending. Pinterest reports that search terms like ‘blue ceramic tile’ and ‘unique tiles’ are up about 500% while ‘vintage tiles’ are up 1107%.

According to the Pinterest trend report, the rest of 2025 is all about “elevating the everyday, making every corner an inspiring, unique escape – no matter your square footage or budget.” Here are three trends shaping our interiors:

Rococo revival

Another trend that proves the people want more. According to Pinterest’s 2025 Report, Rococo revival is bringing back rumpled romance in interiors with a softfeminine flourish. Defined by ornamental details, pastel palettes, and playful extravagance, this late-Baroque-inspired trend channels the salons of Marie Antoinette for the TikTok generation.

Art Deco Décor

Defined by geometric forms, streamlined silhouettes, and motifs like sunbursts, zigzags, chevrons, and stylised florals, Gen Z is embracing the glamour of 1920’s Art Deco as many move into their first rentals or onto the property ladder. On Pinterest, searches for ‘art deco vintage’ are up 805%; ‘new art deco’ 497%, and ‘1980s art deco’ 509%.

G-WHIZZ

Whether roughing it in the most inhospitable climates or ferrying the Kardashians through Beverly Hills, the Mercedes-Benz G-Class is a legend. Metropol writer Ben Selby puts the G580 to the test.

With the launch of each new generation, we have seen the same square-jawed profile of the Gelandewagen, or G-Wagen for short, injected with the latest in Mercedes-Benz tech. We weren’t quite prepared for the first purely electric ‘G’ you see here.

Around town, the G580 a ords the G-Class tradition of grabbing everyone’s attention. Even after the first five minutes of silently motoring through Christchurch’s CBD, all doubts about the G-Wagen’s street cred are quickly dashed. The driving position is still upright but the level of quality and refinement in the G580 is immensely good, as is the level of interior space. You have to be forceful when shutting the doors though, but it does have an

old school analogue vibe which I liked. Inside it’s the tech fest you would come to expect from a G-Class with toys like the latest MBUX interface system, a ‘transparent bonnet’ giving the driver a virtual view via cameras at the front, a thumping great 3D Burmester sound system, massaging heated and ventilated Nappa leather seats, heated and cooled cupholders and ‘O Road Cockpit.’ The latter gives all relevant o -road data including hill gradient, tyre pressure and compass direction, and cameras all around to keep you on the path. New all-terrain goodies include a new torque vectoring system that generates virtual di -locks, resulting in max torque sent to wherever it is needed most to keep things straight and true on any terrain or 35-degree angle. However, its party piece is something called the

G-WHIZZ G-WHIZZ

G-Turn. This mode allows the G580 to turn in circles on its own axis, essentially spinning around 360-degrees on the spot, allowing you to get out of tight spots if need be. That said, it’s still a fun gimmick as I sat there spinning around in circles in fits of laughter. There is also G-Steer, which allows certain wheels to turn at di erent speeds for some ‘tail-out’ o -roading oversteer too. Even in battery form, the G-Wagen is still a mighty muncher of muddy trails and hillsides.

A hefty 116kWh battery pack and quad electric motors gives 432kW and a stratospheric 1164Nm of torque. This means despite a snip over three tonne kerb weight, the G580 is still capable of some serious o -the-line punch. Mercedes-Benz also claim electric range of 562km and a DC fast charging time of 30 minutes from 10 to 80 per cent charge.

In typical G-Class fashion, the G580 is not cheap, and the absence of a V8 soundtrack will more than likely deter some. Those still wanting their share of G-Class pomp and ceremony without the fuel bills could very well see this all-electric G-Wagen as the best of both worlds. No V8 rumble sure, but still a big laugh.

Behind the scenes

We’re hurtling towards the end of 2025 and it’s a cliché - but time really does fly.

We got to thinking about this recently when we popped along to see a long-time Rangiora resident, Kate Smith, who has made the decision to move on from her home of over 30 years. Find out why she took the decision to move and what influenced her choice on page 72.

Life is full of ages and stages, just as we get used to one, another comes along. I remember clearly being side-swiped by the emotion of my son starting school several years ago. I spent days spontaneously sobbing as I came to terms with the idea that he was growing up and I was growing older. “He can’t stay at preschool forever,” my husband pointed out pragmatically. Quite right too, the days pass whatever we do. So, don’t waste a minute at this wonderful time of year.

Turn your eye to the great outdoors, the beautiful springtime gardens, the big blue North Canterbury skies and all the wonderful people, places and events in our region. In this issue we find out how generous bequests are improving our communities, bring you some of the highlight events in our region over the next month and we check out some wonderful local businesses in our Loving Local feature.

At Essence we really do love the local lifestyle. We’ll be getting out there and enjoying all there is on o er this spring.

Moving on

Life is a series of ages and stages and sometimes it can be difficult to face those changes head on. For long term Rangiora resident, Kate Smith, she has decided to do exactly that, moving on from her home of 33 years to a lifestyle village in northern Christchurch.

“It’s been a very di cult decision,” says Kate. “I will miss the house and my neighbours and Rangiora. But I wanted to make the decision to move while I am still capable of doing so.”

Practical steps

Kate has an experienced salesperson for the sale of her house. Essence visits the day after an open home at her property. There were 14 di erent groups through, she tells us, and a lot of interest.

To prepare for her move Kate has already started parting with some of her possessions. Some have gone to op shops, other items to friends and others she has sold online. She has thought in very practical terms about what may fit in her new space. What she can’t decide on she will take with her and then dedicate some time to do a second decluttering session at her new home.

The single storey, character home in Rangiora has been an absolute

haven for her for more than three decades. The house is warm, welcoming and elegant with fresh flowers and art works she has collected on her many travels. The immaculate garden has been a tranquil hideaway and all this has been just a few minutes’ walk from central Rangiora. It’s a home filled with personality and memories, and that’s something that makes the move harder for Kate.

“This house has been perfect for me. I had no wish to move anywhere else and I have had so much enjoyment working on projects around the house,” she says. Yet she is extremely pragmatic and the idea of moving to a lifestyle village with more support around her feels like the sensible thing to do.

Embracing the change

Kate is also moving at a time when she can make the most out of all the lifestyle village has to o er. A keen cyclist, she was attracted to the village by the nearby cycling trail. There are social events, tai chi classes and she has a friend already living there. Instead of maintaining her house and working in the garden, it will be a time for new interests and relaxation.

A new chapter of life – but one that sounds like it will have more than a few upsides.

Leaving a Legacy

A new viewing platform overlooking the Ashley-Rakahuri estuary is designed to help people experience the beauty of the natural landscape and some of the amazing bird life in the area. A $20,000 bequest from the Annie Currie Legacy Fund made this project possible.

Annie, a nurse, was born in Dunedin. She lived and worked in Christchurch and Nelson and her legacy fund’s bequests focus on young women and preserving the natural environment.

The Ashley Rakahuri Rivercare Group (ARRG) was delighted to receive the funds and the stipulation was that it be associated with volunteering, and result in something tangible. The viewing platform ticks both those boxes – it was built by volunteers from ARRG and has created a place where people can go to appreciate the beauty of the estuary.

This bequest was left directly to the AARG. But sometimes people do choose to leave a bequest to the council, although that is relatively rare says Chris Brown, General Manager Community and Recreation at Waimakariri District Council.

“It’s always inspiring when people have felt so connected to this district, or to a particular town, that they choose to leave a gift for the community in their estate,” says Chris.

In 2016, the Margaret M Blackwell Trust contributed $30,000 towards the water feature in the civic space at the Kaiapoi Ruataniwha Centre.

What is a bequest and how do you leave one in a will?

A bequest is simply something left to individuals or organisations through your will. They can take many forms –such as a gift of a specific amount of money or a specific asset. A residuary bequest is whatever is left in a person’s estate after all debts and other gifts have been paid.

More recently, a bequest from the late Harry Harper has been dedicated to restoring and upgrading the Williams Street Bridge in Kaiapoi. Harry, who was 82 when he died in August 2023, left a significant donation in his estate towards a project in the Charles and Williams Street area. He was a man deeply dedicated to his community and the local area.

The project will ensure the structure is both safe and reflective of the town’s unique history. The project will include architectural laser-cut stainless steel handrails and infill panels, incorporating cut out design motifs as well as the refurbishment of existing concrete pillars and lamp posts.

Harry’s brother Ray, and sister-in law Ann, have been part of the Project Control Group which has seen the contract for the design of the balustrade awarded to local artist Mel Eaton.

“These gifts highlight the lasting impact that personal generosity can have on public spaces,” says Chris. “They create legacies that become part of the District’s story.”

Bequests can make a huge di erence to charities, community projects and other non-profit organisations. If you have a cause close to your heart that you’d like to put in your will, then have a chat with your lawyer who can advise you on the finer points to consider.

The daily wellbeing juggle

WORDS: DR LIBBY

When I wrote Rushing Woman’s Syndrome in 2011, it came from a concern I couldn’t ignore. After more than 16 years in clinical practice, I was seeing a new pattern: not just physical symptoms, but a relentless inner urgency.

A sense of never having enough time. Exhaustion masked by outward capability. Women were pushing through fatigue, juggling responsibilities, caring for others and striving to meet expectations – all at the expense of their wellbeing.

These women were tired yet wired. Their hormones, nervous systems and digestion were su ering, and joy was slipping away. I had never before seen such disruption to female reproductive health. This compelled me to name what I observed: Rushing Woman’s Syndrome. And in the years since, the pace of life has only accelerated. This isn’t about blame. It’s about recognising what stress is doing to our biochemistry, and o ering compassionate, practical ways to reclaim vitality.

We live in a world that tells women they can do anything – which is true and wonderful. Yet many have ended up doing everything. Research shows that when both partners work full-time and have one child, women still do twice the housework and three times the childcare. This ‘double shift’ leaves many constantly switched on, with little chance for recovery. Biologically, this urgency keeps the sympathetic nervous system – our fight-or-flight mode – stuck ‘on’. Adrenaline, one of our stress hormones, tells every cell we’re in danger. It can’t distinguish between a real threat and the pressure of deadlines, ca eine or self-expectation. When adrenaline dominates, it disrupts sleep, drives sugar cravings and leaves the body reliant on glucose for fuel. Frustration and self-criticism soon follow.

Durham Health Cosmetic Clinic offers the latest cosmetic treatments carried out by highly experienced Dr Peter Aspell.

The ripple e ects are enormous. Stress hormones interfere with sex hormones, and in my view this is one of the greatest health challenges women face today. Progesterone – our calming, anti-anxiety, anti-depressant hormone – falls away when the adrenals are overwhelmed. This drop fuels many PMS symptoms: heavy periods, mood swings, irritability, sadness and sleep troubles. I remind women: this may be common, but it is not normal. These symptoms are messages, not failings. They are signs your body is asking for something di erent – new ways of eating, moving, thinking, believing or perceiving.

Why do we keep rushing? Often because we care deeply. Yet beneath it all, many of us carry an old belief that we are not enough – so we strive, rush and prove, even at the cost of our health. My concern is not only the physical toll but the way this disconnects women from their own beautiful hearts, from the truth that they are already enough. Bring awareness to your patterns, with gentleness and curiosity. This is the first step in retiring from the rush. You are precious. Life is precious. Please treat yourself accordingly.

As local MP I am of course a big advocate of the Waimakariri and I enjoy promoting the area to visitors. So I was excited to hear that the Oxford Forest Conser vation

As local MP for Waimakariri I am a strong advocate for ensuring we have an appropriate level of public services and infrastructure in order to keep up with our rapidly growing population. That’s why it was important to be part of the sod-turning ceremony for Rangiora’s after-hours health facility.

New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.

We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been under taken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.

The ceremony served as a poignant reminder of those who have worked in this space including the late Sandi McLean who, alongside husband David, led the public petition in 2019 which garnered more than 10,000 signatures calling for extended health services for the Waimakariri.

Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists. This is just one more thing to put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism.

It was sad that Sandi passed away two years ago, following her own health battles, and could not be there to see the results of her hard work starting to bear fruit, but I am sure the community remains grateful to her for all her e orts.

I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning

As Minister for Mental Health, it was good to launch New Zealand’s refreshed strategic approach to eating disorders, bringing a significant funding boost and valuable updates for Kiwis for the first time in over 16 years.

The announcement coincided with New Zealand’s Body Image and Eating Disorder Awareness Week earlier this month, and includes peer support to all regional eating disorders services, community-based support for families and carers, increased capacity of specialist eating disorders services, and an expansion of prevention and early intervention support.

This means an investment in eating disorder services by over $4 million each year, or a 20 percent increase which will bring the total investment in eating disorders services to over $23 million annually.

Support for eating disorders is best provided using a full continuum of care for eating disorders across prevention, primary health care, early intervention and community services, along with specialist and inpatient services for people with the highest needs.

I know that there are many Waimakariri families facing the challenge of trying to help someone with an eating disorder, and this investment will ensure the strategy remains fit for purpose and continues to meet these needs within our communities.
