Events & being ‘extra’
It’s August – that means Christmas is just around the corner. Yes, I have already asked around the Metropol o ce how early is too early to put the tree up. The answer? Not yet. I’ll persevere. The time in between now and December flies like a rocket as the social calendar comes back to life with the sun. Luckily, if you’re pulling on your thinking cap to plan an event or conference over the coming months, this special issue has everything you need. Regardless of their size, conferences and events inject thousands of dollars into the local economy, so we’re shining a spotlight on the dedicated businesses and people who make them happen. For what to serve and where to convene, to the activities that make forever memories, find it all from page 29.
Celebrations like these are an excuse to step outside our comfort zone and embrace the opportunity to be ‘extra’. Put simply, they’re the gateway to the alter egos – that tame coworker turned life-of-the-party or family member you never knew could sing like that.
What better time to a rm that maximalism has returned to the zeitgeist? This is a philosophy that embraces selfexpression, excess, and eclectic vibrancy, with an elegant edge. Rich, loud, and proud – maximalism presents a ‘more is more’ mindset, contrasting the minimalist movement. Need some guidance to plunge into this colourful, patterned world? That’s nothing a Trelise Cooper silk set can’t fix, like the gorgeous one on our cover.
Our local fashion industry is abuzz, in preparation of the six day strong New Zealand Fashion Week schedule (finally) coming to Auckland’s Shed 10 and surrounding areas in late August. Inside, on page 17, find a sneak peak of what the ‘new look’ event will o er, which NZFW board member and creative advisor Dan Ahwa says is “in step with the times”, and not “overly-pretentious or intimidating”. I can’t wait.
I’m so excited, too, for Chicago The Musical to strut across the Isaac Theatre Royal Stage in just a few days. Congratulations to our Chicago Showstopper Giveaway winner Paul van der Meys who will get to see this show in style.
Events keep our city humming. Book in, show up, have fun. See you out there.

Power, purpose, & the gift of midlife
Midlife gets a bad rap – often portrayed as a slow descent into elastic waistbands and forgetting why you walked into a room. Television personality Petra Bagust and acclaimed journalist Niki Bezzant tell Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen that finding yourself in your fifties might be the best chapter yet.
Midlife is a woman’s paradox. It’s the season of giving. Giving to kids, to ageing parents, to work, to community – yet, Petra Bagust and Niki Bezzant, now in their midfifties, have discovered it is also the season that asks you to finally give something back to yourself.
“The menopausal transition rocked the boat enough for me to make conscious decisions about what’s a coping mechanism and what’s a fantastic habit? What’s a defence mechanism and what’s a sustainable way of being in the world?” reflects Petra. That kind of personal reckoning isn’t a loss, it’s a doorway, she says.
One of New Zealand’s most well-known broadcasters and a respected podcaster, mother, and longtime spiritual seeker, Petra’s journey into and through menopause has been more than hormonal. Now aged 53, the process of being diagnosed with ADHD earlier this year has added another layer of self-reflection and evaluation into the midlife mix. It’s seen her intentionally slow her previously relentless pace, and shift from people-pleasing to purpose-led decision-making.
“Finding out that I was ADHD made me realise I did not want to sustain all these systems that required relentless movement. I felt a bit like a guinea pig in a wheel, just in constant motion. So, I’m enjoying the oestrogen drop in that I don’t care about everything so much. That loss of energy is one of the signs of perimenopause. I want to decide, ‘yes, I’m going to do this. No, I’m not going to do that.’ So, no, I don’t want the energy back because if I had limitless energy, maybe I would just carry on with that old way of being.
Despite claiming to be slowing down, Petra still has plenty going on. As well as touring Hot Mess: Navigating Midlife and Menopause, the show she co-hosts with Niki Bezzant, she also presents two podcasts – Grey Areas and Sunday Sanctuary – and works as a chaplain, emcee and public speaker. Let’s not forget she’s also mother to three adult children, and wife to cameraman Hamish Wilson.
For Niki, a journalist, speaker and women’s health advocate, midlife also brought a new clarity. “This phase strips away what doesn’t work anymore,” she says. “You come out the other side knowing yourself more deeply than ever before.”
The author of bestselling menopause book, This Changes Everything: The honest guide to menopause and perimenopause and 2024’s The Everything Guide: Hormones, health and happiness in menopause, midlife and beyond, Niki rejects the idea so embedded in Western culture, that menopause is purely about loss: of fertility, youth, or relevance. “We’re told we’re declining but we’re actually gaining wisdom, mana, power. You give fewer shits about things that don’t matter. You get to focus on what truly does.”
Rethinking midlife
Why is menopause getting so much attention? Because a growing chorus of Generation X women is challenging the narrative that ageing equals decline.
“Our generation, Gen X women, are completely rejecting that idea,” says Niki. “We are not losing relevance, and we’re not going to be like many of our mothers’ generation who were stepping back at this time. We are definitely not. Our lives are di erent.
So, no, it’s not acceptable to think that we’re going to just step o
Niki Bezzant
into the sidelines and not be completely engaged with life. Our lives are expanding, not shrinking.”
“We’ve internalised this Western, patriarchal idea that this stage is a problem,” Petra says. “But what if it’s actually a doorway to the next level of our lives? What if it’s an invitation to pay attention –to our bodies, our values, our purpose?”
A recurring theme in both women’s reflections is the urgent need to depathologise menopause. It’s not a disease, they insist. It’s not shameful. It’s not the end. Yet many women are still blindsided by it, and too many su er in silence.
“Some women need medical support, absolutely,” Petra says. “But for the rest of us, this is a natural, powerful transition that deserves attention, not embarrassment.”
“This phase strips away what doesn’t work anymore. You come out the other side knowing yourself more deeply than ever before.” - Niki Bezzant
It’s something women shouldn’t face alone; it deserves community. “You can’t do it alone,” Niki adds. “We’re not meant to.”
This point underscores their reasons for taking the conversation to women throughout New Zealand on their Hot Mess tour. They first brought the sold-out show to Christchurch in April, now they’re bringing it back as part of the WORD Christchurch Festival this month.
The struggle is real
Of course, all the spiritual awakening in the world doesn’t cancel out the real and often extremely uncomfortable and upsetting physical shifts that come with perimenopause and beyond, yet for both Petra and Niki, the key is agency – tuning in, not checking out.
“The biggest myth is that the answers are out there. They’re not. The answers are in you,” Petra says.
“It’s so individual. It’s important to honour what’s happening in your body and pay attention to it. A big change for me was falling in love with sleep. I very much had a child of the 80s attitude, that ‘Heaven is for sleep’. I thought sleep was something that got in the way of working and fun. Now, though, to be able to nap in the sun on the weekend or to go to bed at a regular time with my husband, has made all di erence. I like the palpable e ect of getting a really good night’s sleep. I’m like, ‘Oh, wow, this actually makes me feel emotionally stable. I’m really happy. I can take it today…’ So to support sleep, I take magnesium and taurine, and try to stick to a routine bedtime.”
For Niki, strength training has been her anchor. “Movement is medicine,” she says. “Especially lifting weights. It’s been essential, not just for physical health, but for emotional stability too.”
However, there is never just one magic solution nor one thing that works for everyone, says Niki.
“This is the message that I really try and get across. There’s never one solution. It’s a whole lot of things, a big jigsaw puzzle, and you need to pay attention to all the pieces – food, sleep, movement, stress and hormone therapy, potentially. To me, the first non-negotiable is exercise and moving your body. There’s so much benefit to that, to doing whatever movement you can, as often as you can. And there’s no downside; it’s only going to be positive. For me, that’s been strength training and working with weights, which is something that every human needs to pay attention to as we age but it’s particularly beneficial during this transition. If you haven’t already, think about picking up some weights.”
Then there’s alcohol, which is something both women have re-evaluated. “It’s a physiological thing,” Niki says. “We just lose tolerance for alcohol as we age, and that happens to women much more than men. I’m such a
lightweight with alcohol now, one or two drinks and I feel it the next day. It’s like stress or not getting enough sleep – it makes everything worse. Cutting back can be a real game changer.”
Message to their younger selves
Now that they have reached midlife, do Petra and Niki look back and wish they could reassure or advise their younger selves?
“I would have liked to have told my younger self to learn about this a bit earlier, so that I knew what was coming and kind of had a handle on it before I got to the age where it was starting to happen to me. And not to be scared of it, that’s the other big thing,” Niki says. Petra, who had only heard negative things about midlife and menopause, would say to her younger self: “Hey babe, this is going to be a wild ride. It’s going to be amazing. And you’re on the right track. Don’t give up. Let your curiosity run free. That’s not to say I didn’t, at di erent points, get freaked out. I experienced the shame of being seen and I experienced the pain of some of the signs of it but just don’t believe that it’s all bad. It’s like, buckle up babe, let’s go.”

Read or rust: Novelist Kate De Goldi says books are critical to our wellbeing in an AI age
Award-winning author and Aotearoa’s new Te Awhi Rito reading ambassador Kate De Goldi says our brains are under siege – by screens, algorithms, and the distraction of ever-pinging phones. The WORD Festival guest tells Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen that the solution is beautifully simple: sustained reading to rebuild attention, empathy and imagination, one book at a time.
For me, the most frightening information is that once you ask AI to do your thinking for you, the brain starts to atrophy. If we’re not writing and reading, our brains are deteriorating.”
So says award-winning author and newly minted New Zealand reading ambassador Kate De Goldi. It’s a startling and sobering thought but the facts are that, globally, reading rates are freefalling. A trend that started when social media platforms gripped their long fingers around our collective consciousness and started to squeeze.
Kate, though, refuses to be despondent. She is speaking to me through her laptop screen. For her, visiting family in Western Australia, it’s 7am. She is in bed, propped up against the headboard with her pillow behind her. There’s nothing about Kate, though, that reflects the early hour or her location – she is fully engaged and animated as she talks about her mission –communicating the importance of reading.
“There’s an enormous body of global research,” Kate explains, “that shows reading is fundamental to full literacy, to educational outcomes, and to wellbeing across a lifetime. If you’re a reader, your likelihood of a better educational outcome is really clear.”
HOME TO ŌTAUTAHI
Born in Christchurch in 1959 as Kathleen Domenica De Goldi, of Italian and Irish descent, Kate is a renowned novelist, children’s writer, and an Arts Foundation Laureate who, when not writing,
is a voracious reader. A habit that began early and profoundly shaped her. She was, she says, a curious, often distracted student, drawn more to books than schoolwork. “There were bouts of concentration and minor brilliance,” she jokes, “but I often went o -piste. Reading was the through-line of my life.”
Without the money to travel when she was younger, she explored the world through books, journeying across cultures, time periods, and philosophies long before she ever boarded a plane for the first time at age 37 to visit Australia.
Right now, she is taking a brief respite from a busy schedule with a stay in Perth to visit her daughter Luciana, who lives there with her husband, the former All Black and now a Western Force coach, Jeremy Thrush, and their three daughters. While Kate is visiting, though, Jeremy is away coaching with the Under 20s Australian team for the upcoming Rugby World Cup. She is of course especially delighted to be spending time with her three granddaughters, aged six, three and 11 months. Interestingly, the female power of three is a recurring theme in Kate’s lineage. She is one of three sisters herself, as is her mother. While o cially she might be in holiday mode, Kate’s mission as a champion for reading is a 24/7 preoccupation. Her role as New Zealand’s reading ambassador, or Te Awhi Rito, isn’t symbolic, it’s strategic. The position, born out of the National Library’s kaupapa to foster reading, and launched by former prime minister Dame Jacinda Ardern in 2020, builds on the work of the previous ambassadors: writer Ben Brown, and school librarian Alan Dingley.
Kate comes to the role at a time when reading rates are declining globally. At the same time, mental health disorders are skyrocketing and extreme right-wing views fuelled by social media algorithms are on the rise. She says there is a clear connection.
“Reading is declining everywhere, and it’s been declining steeply amongst young people since 2009. We know absolutely why that is, it’s because of social media.”
She worries about social media’s erosion of sustained attention. “We’re seeing plunging concentration levels. That’s tied to the rise in anxiety, too – the endless notifications pings, the comparison, the toxic content.” Reading o ers an antidote. Solitude. Imagination. Inner life.
Books versus screens: What the science shows “There’s been incredible research done in universities in the States, looking at what’s happening in young people’s brains when they’re being read to and are following along with the pictures and words. It goes bananas up there, it’s like a circus,” Kate says.
Kate refers to neurological studies showing that, when we read a book, the brain lights up with activity. Synapses go o like fireworks and new neural pathways form and grow. In stark contrast, when we watch something on a screen, this brain activity stops.
The challenge, Kate says, is “given all that knowledge and the times that we live in, reading is absolutely crucial to the development of critical thinking, especially now that we’re about to experience the AI tsunami. We know what’s happening with brain development and brain activity. When you read, your brain is doing the work. With screens, nothing much is happening in the brain. It’s a passive act; the brain is being hired out. It atrophies.”
Her message? Reverse the decline in reading books. More precisely, the decline in “sustained reading”, the type that develops critical thinking, empathy, imagination, and more. Why? Because our well-being depends upon it.
“There is a lot of evidence showing that reading is really important for well-being across a lifetime,” Kate says. “Because when you read, you are forced to walk in other people’s shoes. You’re being put in the realm of ‘other’, which, of course, inevitably develops empathy.
Even between e-books and physical books, there are noticeable di erences. Early research suggests comprehension and memory may be stronger with printed books. “There’s something about tactility, about tracking through a book, flipping back and forth – the body and brain participate in the reading,” she explains. “But of course, we should support reading in all forms. E-readers, phones – whatever keeps people reading.”
BUILD A NATION OF READERS
Kate is adamant: building a nation of readers is a collective e ort. “It involves parents reading in the home. Libraries. Schools. Communities. Local councils.” She laments that not all New Zealand schools have libraries, let alone sta ed ones – a consequence, she says, of leaving resource allocation up to individual boards and management. “The result is uneven access.”
Access is also an issue at home. “It’s easy to tell parents to read to their children, but what if English isn’t their first language? What if there are no books in the house? What if they can’t get to the library?”
Even among the middle class, reading is declining. “We’ve all just sort of stood by while our kids became addicted to phones,” Kate says. “This isn’t just about equity, this is happening across society.”
That’s why her mission is broad – not just to reach children and schools, but to re-engage adults, families, and communities in the shared act of reading. “We need a collective model,” she says, “where reading is visible, valued, and celebrated.”
TURNING THE PAGE
Soon, Kate will return home to Christchurch to be part of the city’s annual WORD Festival this month. Her duties include chairing a session about the Eden Hore Central Otago tractor shed-turned-couture museum as well as being a panellist for Tom Sainsbury’s Reading Enthusiasts’ Soiree
The city of her birth, her heart and soul, is once again her base after 27 years living away in Wellington. She and her partner, photographer Bruce Foster, relocated back to Christchurch in January, buying a small house in South Brighton. “It’s just wonderful,” she says. “I wake up every day and look at the Port Hills, we’re five minutes from the beach, and I feel like I’ve died and gone to heaven.”
Despite being away for so long, all of Kate’s writing – novels, essays, and creative non-fiction – is grounded in Christchurch, the landscape that continues to spark her imagination.
Whether in Perth cuddling her granddaughters or in Christchurch writing, advocating, and reading, Kate is living her mission.
“It’s not just about books,” she says. “It’s about what kind of country we want to be.”

On a global scale, the wheel of fortune is currently spinning faster than the wheels on Liam Lawson’s Formula One rocket ship.
Is there a way to weight the financial wheel of fortune so that its rotations land in your favour? Everyone from the ‘one-percenters’ to the classic Kiwi ‘mum and dad’ investors are now choosing precious metals in response to global political and fiscal instability, says Jerome Concisom, CEO of Commonwealth Vault. The musical Christchurch never forgot
In the 1990s, a touring production of Blood Brothers starring David Soul as the narrator came to Christchurch and left a lasting impression. This September, it returns with renewed energy and local heart.
Those who saw it the first time around still speak of the experience – the laughter, heartbreak, and the final breathless silence when the lights went down. The Isaac Theatre Royal will play host to a bold new production that captures all the emotional force of the original, with a fresh local cast and creative team.
Did you ever hear the story of the Johnstone twins?
Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers is a gripping tale of two boys – twins separated at birth and raised on opposite sides of the class divide, whose lives cross in increasingly fateful ways. It’s a story of nature versus nurture, of mothers and sons, of love, loss, and the price of secrets. Just as important, it’s full of warmth and humour: adults play children, games are played in backyards, and the smallest choices ripple into the biggest consequences.
Featuring an iconic score including Tell Me It’s Not True, Marilyn Monroe, Easy Terms, and Bright New Day, Blood Brothers is both a searing social drama and a heartfelt musical that will leave audiences moved. “An all-local production crew honours a musical so significant to the city, one Christchurch never forgot,” shares Showbiz Christchurch’s marketing and communications manager, Tom Hart. “From the cast and creative team to builders and designers, this production represents some of the city’s finest talent and is a rare opportunity to witness a world-class production revived by and for the local community.” Return for a second time or discover it for the first, secure your tickets today through the Isaac Theatre Royal website.

Honouring those before us
Artist Darryn George presents new paintings in his exhibition Mihi, exclusive to view at this leading local gallery from 12 August to 5 September.
Born and based in Ōtautahi, acclaimed artist Darryn George is of Ngāpuhi descent. His paintings reflect the breadth of his cultural roots and are anchored in his Christian faith and his Māori heritage. Primarily working with geometric abstraction in a reduced palette, some more recent works have included looser figurative elements and brighter colours.
In his new exhibition at PG gallery192, Darryn returns to formality with beautifully balanced geometric paintings that are alive with colour, pattern and rhythm. The title of the show Mihi translates as ‘tribute’ and each work is named after an important person in his life. Darryn’s dynamic yet serene tribute paintings are respectfully dedicated to hidden leaders: “A big part of the stories and art of Māori culture is acknowledging those that have gone before us; those people from our past who have had an influence upon us. For me, these lovely people whom the paintings are named after, often went under the radar, but the seeds that they sowed were significant,” Darryn says.
Darryn has exhibited nationally and internationally, with major exhibitions at Te Papa Tongarewa, Pataka Art and Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery, Wellington City Gallery and more.
See the exhibition at PG gallery192, open Tuesday to Friday from 10.30am to 5pm, and Saturday between 10.30am and 3pm, at 192 Bealey Avenue, Christchurch.

RUNWAY THE RETURNS
New Zealand Fashion Week is back.
New Zealand’s fashion industry and sartorial spirit will awaken after years of a rocky, uncertain future from 25 August. Thanks to a team of determined creatives and generous supporters, New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) returns to Auckland with six days of shows and exhibitions for an industry deprived of this event since 2021.
Celebrated local designer Juliette Hogan will present the first solo show for NZFW 2025, whilst the legendary Karen Walker is back on the schedule after a 15-year hiatus. Kathryn Wilson and her e ervescent edge; cult brand Zambesi; the iconic silhouettes of taylor, and Augustine’s vibrant colours – expect a homecoming of local fashion. Joining them on the schedule are shows, presentations and installations from Kiri Nathan, Harris Tapper, Rebe, Claudia Li, Yu Mei, Jasmin Sparrow, Adrion Atelier, Kāhui Collective, Untouched World, Knuefermann, and Rory William Docherty.
The week of festivities spotlights emerging and student designers alongside sustainable fashion initiatives and a debut designer showcase from charity Breast Cancer Cure. Add to that the crowd favourite Pacific Fusion Fashion Show, a ‘best looks’ double-o ering, archival exhibitions, a speaker series, the Ensemble Fashion Film Festival, and this is a triumphant return. NZFW owner Feroz Ali, says it’s “heartening” to see the realisation of the team’s vision brought to life.
The o cial NZFW 2025 campaign depicts what the renewed priorities on local design and commerical success aims to present. Directed by NZFW Board Member and Creative Advisor Dan Ahwa and photographed by Mara Sommer, “The NZFW 2025 campaign is in step with the times. Nothing overly-pretentious or intimidating. Move over, minimalists. A new wave has reached us – and it’s all things ‘extra’. More than a loud shirt or bright blazer, I’m talking matching sets engulfed in prints that serenade without sound, or a combination of colours that only makes sense to you. Maximalism is about being bold and authentically expressive. Don’t be afraid to layer and accessorise again and again. There’s no more time for sartorial calm – instead seek chaos.

cuddle The chemical
A hug lasting 20 seconds can have a therapeutic effect on the body and mind.
The average length of a hug between two people is three seconds. Researchers, though, have discovered something amazing. When a hug lasts 20 seconds or more, it stimulates the release of oxytocin, lowers cortisol levels, and helps regulate blood pressure and heart rate.
Oxytocin, also known as the love hormone or cuddle chemical, has many benefits for our physical and mental health. It’s a hormone and neurotransmitter that’s released through physical touch, especially in emotionally meaningful relationships. It plays a massive role in how safe, connected, and emotionally regulated we feel. It helps us, among other things, to relax, to feel safe and calm our fears and anxiety.
This free-of-charge, feel-good fix is ours every time we embrace a partner, cradle a child, or hold a cherished pet. It soothes the nervous system and teaches the body that we are safe.
A famous quote by psychotherapist Virginia Satir goes, “We need four hugs a day for survival. We need eight hugs a day for maintenance. We need 12 hugs a day for growth.”
While those exact numbers are unlikely to be scientifically proven, there is a great deal of scientific evidence related to the importance of hugs and physical contact. Why hug? Here are six really good reasons:
1. Stimulates oxytocin
Oxytocin is a neurotransmitter that acts on the limbic system, the brain’s emotional centre, promoting feelings of contentment, reducing anxiety and stress, and even making mammals more prone to monogamy.
2. Prevents disease
A ection has a direct response on the reduction of stress, which prevents many diseases, and balancing the nervous system. Hugging also stimulates the thymus gland, which strengthens the immune system.
3. Self-esteem
Hugging boosts self-esteem, especially in children. The tactile sense is all-important in infants.
4. Stimulates dopamine
Low dopamine levels play a role in the neurodegenerative disease Parkinson’s as well as mood disorders such as depression.
5. Stimulates serotonin
Hugging for an extended time lifts one’s serotonin levels, elevating mood and creating happiness.
So, hug it out, every day, for at least 20 seconds to improve your relationships, health, and happiness.
I had a fantastic experience with Richard at Oral Design NZ. From start to finish, Richard was warm, professional, and incredibly skilled. I really appreciated how much care he took to get everything just right - nothing felt rushed or cookie-cutter. The bespoke teeth he made for me look amazing and feel completely natural. Su ering from dry, itchy skin in winter is a common condition that can a ect anyone. Often called ‘winter itch’ or pruritus hiemalis, older adults with naturally drier skin are more susceptible.
Why ‘winter’ itch? Because when temperatures drop, we crank up the thermostat, creating dry indoor heat with low humidity levels. We sit indoors for hours in dry, heated o ces and homes. This lack of moisture contributes to dry skin and potentially causes skin irritation, itching, or swelling.
What to do? First, dial down the heating, go easy on the electric blanket, and get as much fresh air as possible. As well, add moisture back into the air with a humidifier and limit those hot showers, which may feel soothing yet dry your skin out even more. Opt instead for short, lukewarm showers and gentle, fragrancefree cleansers. For an extra soothing routine, take a warm bath with a quarter-cup of baking soda before bed, which can ease itching and promote relaxation.
Itchy, dry skin this winter?
As colder temperatures continue and heaters remain on high, many people experience itchy, dry skin.
Tips for soothing winter skin itch:
• Moisturise immediately after bathing: Pat your skin dry after a lukewarm shower, then apply a thick, ceramide-based moisturiser within a few minutes to lock in hydration.
• Use a humidifier indoors: Combat dry indoor air caused by winter heating by running a humidifier to maintain skin-friendly moisture levels in your home.
• Choose gentle, fragrance-free products: Soaps, lotions, and laundry detergents with fragrance or alcohol can irritate dry, sensitive skin. Opt for hypoallergenic, fragrance-free formulas.
• Stay hydrated: Drinking plenty of water helps support your skin’s barrier from the inside out.
• Apply oils at night: Apply natural oils overnight, for example, coconut or jojoba oil for deep moisturising. Cover hands or feet with cotton gloves or socks to seal in moisture.
• Avoid scratching: Scratching can worsen irritation and even lead to infection. Try cold compresses or anti-itch creams with colloidal oatmeal, menthol, or hydrocortisone for relief.
• Use a water softener: Hard water can dry and irritate the skin. Softener helps reduce mineral buildup that strips away skin’s natural oils.
(and
ways to reduce sugar
tackle meno belly)
Are you struggling with perimenopause or menopause belly? You’re not alone. Fellow menopausal belly battler and Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen goes in search of the villains. Top of the list? Sugar.
There you are, going about your business, getting on with living your life when suddenly, from seemingly out of nowhere, a whole lot of extra fat appears around your middle (and boobs, upper arms…). It is frustrating and feels very unfair, yet here we are. Your body is playing by new rules and what used to work, doesn’t any more.
Many women notice stubborn weight gain, particularly around the belly, hips and thighs during perimenopause and menopause. The reason is that our bodies don’t respond to sugar in the same way they once did. I know, it’s so annoying. Just when we feel like we need sugar more than ever.
The issue lies in the metabolic changes that our bodies go through during this transition. Why? Because oestrogen plays a role in regulating insulin sensitivity, glucose metabolism, and fat distribution, so its decline can disrupt these processes. As our oestrogen levels drop, insulin sensitivity also declines, meaning our bodies store more fat, particularly around the middle.
In other words, our blood sugar levels rise and the body becomes less e cient at clearing it out. When sugar can’t be processed properly, it has to be stored and unfortunately, that storage tends to show up in places we least want it.
Sugar, then, is a silent saboteur for those of us in the perimenopause and menopause stage of life. Reducing sugar is one of the most powerful changes we can make for less belly fat, fewer cravings, better sleep and balanced hormones. It’s challenging, though, because sugar is now everywhere we turn, and it’s not just about sucrose (the white granulated stu ), it includes anything the body processes as sugar –lactose, glucose, corn syrup, agave nector, dextrose, fructose, white flour, and so on. To help reclaim our waistlines, we can start reducing our sugar with these six tips:
1. Start with breakfast
Ditch sugary cereals or toast with jam. Protein is the ultimate stabiliser. Choose protein-rich options like eggs to stabilise blood sugar all day (see page 47 for an egg mu n recipe). When you start your day with enough complete protein (at least 20–25g), it blunts sugar cravings, reduces blood sugar crashes, keeps you full longer, and helps your body burn fat instead of storing it.
2. Read labels like a detective
Sugar hides under many names, for example, fruit juice concentrate, words ending in ‘ose’, or syrup-related terms like rice syrup or cane syrup. Aim for packaged foods with fewer than 5g sugar per 100g.
3. Watch the ‘healthy’ sugar traps
Granola, smoothies, flavoured yoghurts and protein bars can be sugar bombs in disguise. Make your own versions at home with whole ingredients and replace sweet snacks with salty or savoury ones.
4. Ditch diet drinks
Artificial sweeteners may trigger cravings for real sugar and, ironically, can put your body in fat storage mode. Try sparkling water with lime, or herbal teas instead.
5. Don’t drink your sugar
Cut back on wine, cocktails, fruit juice, and milky co ees. Alcohol and sugary drinks spike insulin and contribute to fat storage.
6. Balance your blood sugar
Each meal should include protein, healthy fats, and fibre. This trio slows digestion and keeps sugar cravings at bay. Eat a rainbow of whole foods and prepare your meals and snacks as much as possible.
Lowering sugar isn’t about deprivation, it’s about reclaiming our balance, energy, and wellbeing during a powerful life stage.

As the flagship event of the United Nations World Adaptation Science Programme, this conference will bring global attention to our city. Happily, we have all the facilities needed, from hotels and restaurants, to venue spaces, and attractions for the international delegates to enjoy while they’re in town.
Jake Bailey’s top tips for public speaking
Ten years ago, an 18-year-old Jake Bailey sat in a wheelchair in front of his classmates at Christchurch Boys’ High School and delivered a prizegiving speech that would go viral and be seen by millions. Days earlier, he’d been diagnosed with Burkitt lymphoma, an aggressive cancer, and given just weeks to live without treatment.
Live he did, and since being announced in remission in 2016, Jake has spoken about resilience to more than 100,000 people, across more than 40 cities, to audiences of three to 3000. His audiences have ranged from elite athletes to kids in outback towns, Fortune 500 CEOs to prison inmates, foreign governments to retirement homes.
Now a full-time public speaker, New Zealand’s youngest #1 bestselling author, and a passionate resilience educator, Jake shares his learnings from countless hours on stage to help nail your next speech.
Public speaking is a skill, not a gift
“Like any other skill, it’s something you develop and hone through practice. I’ve done several thousand hours of it; if I hadn’t improved, I’d be seriously concerned.”
Stu ng up is part of the process
“I’ve mumbled, stumbled, and fumbled my way through plenty of speeches. Any polish you see now is just the result of learning from mistakes.”
Write the way you speak
“The biggest di erence between a natural speaker and someone who’s clearly uncomfortable on stage? They’ve written a speech like a piece of prose and are reading it word for word. But we write completely di erently to how we speak. If you’re going to script a talk, speak it aloud first, then transcribe it exactly as it comes out of your mouth. Even things like starting a sentence with ‘and’ or pausing mid-thought, help it sound real and make you more relatable.”
Don’t buy into the ‘motivational speaker’ hype
“I stay far away from that term. I’m not trying to be Tony Robbins or David Goggins. I focus on connection, not spectacle – especially in New Zealand, that style just doesn’t land.”
PowerPoint is a tool, not a crutch
“I’ve only recently come to love PowerPoint slides. I spoke professionally for nearly a decade without ever using them. I liked the challenge of holding a room with just my words. But recently, I started integrating visuals and when used well, they can really enhance your message. Don’t fill your slides with dense text or read them word-for-word. Use images, quotes, or prompts that support what you’re saying. And if you’ve got amazing holiday snaps from Antarctica, like I do, PowerPoint lets you show them whether your audience wants to see them or not!”
Jake Bailey’s latest book, The Comeback Code: The power of resilience when the going gets tough, is out now.

The team’s food focus has always been a recipe for success. Classic and can’t-go-wrong dishes are elevated to another level without losing elements that make them so loved. “Menu items may be similar to pub grub, yet the ingredients and methods used lift the dishes from predictable to tastefully unbelievable,” Andy says.
A delicious main fare, set menus for groups of 20 or more, stunning seasonal platters and nibbles designed to suit tastebuds and dietary requirements are drool-wrothy at the thought.
Between intimate dinners and extravagant end-of-year celebrations, The Good Home Pegasus has the space and the service to suit you. Charmer
No matter the occasion – from business meetings to family
Fancy an event in the closest thing to an English pub to be found in Christchurch?
The Sprig and Fern in Merivale and its century-old premises is a slice of England in Ōtautahi.
One of the best little locals in town, Sprig and Fern has a delightfully cosy function area, ‘The West Wing’ separate from the main bar and restaurant area. A tasteful interior design personally chosen by co-owner Wendy Roigard, with inviting furnishings and a warm colour scheme certainly serves that charming pub vibe.
“During the day, this wing can be hired out for private events such as a corporate strategy session,” says Wendy. “We have a separate sound system here as well as a white board, flip charts and VDU. In the evening this is a perfect space for a family event or a Christmas function. We can accommodate between 20 to 50 guests in this area.”
The main restaurant though, is also available for larger events of up to 90 people.
No function is complete without good food and beverages. The menu features pub favourites with pizza being a speciality along with antipasto platters, bar snacks, and easy to eat finger food. There is also a full range of Sprig and Fern Brewing craft beers and cider on tap, as well as local and international wines and spirits. To enquire, email westwingmerivale@gmail.com.
“We’re all about simple, delicious, fresh, and wholesome food.”

Introducing Christchurch’s newest Taiwanese fusion restaurant and karaoke bar.
Afresh fusion of flavour, fun, and music is landing in central Christchurch this winter, with the grand opening of Cheers and Karaoke Bar on 8 August. The date was chosen for its lucky double-eight symbolism in Asian culture, representing prosperity and good fortune.
Located at 269 Cashel Street (neighbouring One New Zealand Stadium), this is no ordinary restaurant. It’s a lively combination of Taiwanese and Asian fusion cuisine, a stylish garden bar, and five fully equipped, private karaoke rooms, making it a unique destination for casual diners, foodies, and partygoers alike.
At the heart of the venture is managing director Hank Chu, who brings more than 20 years of culinary experience to the table. Originally trained in Taiwan, Hank honed his skills in Japanese, Western, and traditional Taiwanese cooking, and his diverse background is evident in a vibrant menu that’s designed to be both comforting and bold. Diners can expect standout dishes like seafood with egg noodles, fried tofu, ramen beef noodles, traditional pork dishes, fusion-style fried chicken, and Hank’s silver medal-winning sous vide beef noodle soup, all packed with authentic flavour and creative flair.
The venue features an inviting indoor dining space for up to 30 guests and an outdoor garden bar and restaurant area, also seating 30. What really sets Cheers and Karaoke Bar apart, though, is its karaoke experience. With four private rooms for groups of 10 to 15 and one larger room accommodating up to 30, it’s the perfect place to celebrate birthdays, host team outings, or simply enjoy a night out with friends. Whether you’re singing your heart out with a microphone in hand or relaxing over shared plates and drinks in the garden bar, the atmosphere at Cheers and Karaoke Bar is inclusive, and full of energy.

Party canapés
Need a quick and easy canapé that delivers a lot of ‘wow’ for very little effort? Say hello to our friend the vol-au-vent.
Avol-au-vent – French for ‘blown by the wind’ – is a light, flaky pu pastry shell filled with sweet or savoury goodness. While homemade pastry is an option, store-bought cases o er a quick and easy shortcut so you can focus on the delicious fillings. You’ll love these:
Harissa and lime prawn cocktail
Combine 100g mayonnaise, 2 tbsp ketchup and 1-2 tsp rose harissa paste with a squeeze of lime juice. Add 300g cooked and shelled prawns, season and mix well. Spoon into the pastry cases, then top with chopped chives or cress.
Wild mushroom and Parmesan
Soak 25g dried porcini mushrooms in hot water for 30 minutes. Heat 2 tbsp of olive oil in a fry pan, sauté 2 finely chopped spring onions and 2 crushed garlic cloves. Squeeze excess liquid from porcini mushroom, roughly chop and add to the pan along with 100g chopped brown button mushrooms and 1 tsp chopped thyme leaf. Cook for 5 minutes. If the mixture is dry, add a little porcini soaking water. Remove from the heat and stir in 4 tbsp mascarpone and 85g grated Parmesan. Fill cases with a spoonful of mixture and serve scattered with Parmesan shavings and thyme leaves.
Want a sweet option?
For strawberry dessert vol-au-vents, fill each case with whipped cream and top with cut strawberry.

home & living ways to maximalise
Maximalism is your gateway to ‘more is more’. Entirely expressive and impossible to replicate, this interior design practice is a unique way to inject your home with personality and amplify its intrigue. If you’re formally rejecting and renouncing the minimalist’s subdued aesthetic, here are four ways to make maximalism work.
LAYER
Embrace the philosophy that your space should be experimental and mismatched yet not chaotic and cluttered. Objects, art, books, patterns, and colour should all coexist in your interiors. Let these layers evolve over time instead of forcing it now – and each piece will begin to complement its surroundings for wow-factor that works.
COLOUR
Of course, maximalism has no rules. When colour comes into question, though, it’s sometimes advised to stick with a monochromatic method for key pieces, working with shades of one foundational colour to anchor your space.
FUSION
Hit the thrift shop for unique finds – fusing existing modern pieces with antiques adds character and complexity. Style these together to bring fun, fantasy and flair home.
PASSION
Maximalism should be inspired by passion and emotion – yours. Experts advise that the method is not in throwing a whole hoard of statement pieces together, but curating a collection of treasures both precious and playful, from pieces that represent your personality to souvenirs and heirlooms.

McDonald and Hartshorne carry out refurbishments from all walks of life, from couch and chair reupholstery to furniture repairs and commercial refurbishment. By using only the best materials from around New Zealand, the team values refurbishing furniture to last their clients a lifetime. “Shopping local means you have thousands of fabric options suitable to every budget without compromising on quality,” says administration manager Neke McDonald.
Not only is New Zealand-made furniture built to last, it is built to be passed down. As a generations-old family heirloom loses its sparkle, McDonald and Hartshorne recognises its solid framework to refurbish each piece to its former glory.
The majority of imported suites are sewn all in one, “this often means that the whole unit needs to be unstitched and disassembled to repair,” Neke explains, highlighting the benefits of enlisting local craftsmanship. “Having a New Zealand-made suite means that the back seat cushions and seat cushions are removable. This means that when the foams have

Celebrating design innovation
August will see the finalists in the popular House of the Year awards announced at Lockwood’s builder network conference before being opened for public vote through the company’s website and social media channels. An annual competition, it recognises outstanding homes built using the Lockwood construction method.
“The House of the Year competition celebrates the best ideas of the owners, the designers who translate those ideas into livable dreams and challenge sta in our Rotorua factory, and finally our wonderful national builder network for delivering the realisation,” says Lockwood’s sales and marketing manager Sarah Smith.
Get ready to vote in these popular House of the Year awards.
“Open to public vote since 2020, we’ve been delighted with and guided by comments and advice from voters over the years,” Sarah says. “Many of the design innovations of the finalists find their way into new Lockwood design magazines.
“Our builder network always enjoys the friendly competition involved in selecting the finalists, while the owners and builders of homes in the public vote wait nervously as voting unfolds later this year. We’re excited to celebrate another award-winning home with our clients,” Sarah says.

Whether you’re squeezing into a studio, rocking a tiny home, making the most of a modest nook, or maximising a cosy apartment, smart design choices – from furniture that moonlights as storage to optical illusions that fool the eye – can transform even the tightest areas.
1
Reflect light with mirrors Mirrors help bounce natural light around, making small rooms feel more spacious – especially handy in older New Zealand homes where lighting can be limited.
2
Use light, neutral colours Pale walls, light-toned furniture, and neutral textiles can make a room feel brighter and more open, which is perfect for homes where natural light is limited, especially in winter.
3
Choose dual-purpose furniture
Opt for pieces that do double duty, like a storage ottoman, a bed with built-in drawers, or a window seat with storage underneath. It’s a smart way to stay tidy without compromising on style or function.
The
newest incarnation of the ever-evolving Ford Escape Titanium is out now. Metropol writer Ben Selby spent a week with the latest from the Ford family.
Fo r the Ford Escape, one thing has remained constant through its many iterations: its ability to shake up and surprise one of the most competitive new car segments, the mid-sized SUV. However, can it still cut the mustard? Thanks to Ford New Zealand, I spent a week with the Escape Titanium FHEV 2WD to find out.
Styling wise, the Escape has lost its rounded floating headlights of the previous generation for some sharper looking LED Matrix headlamps with daytime running lights. There is also a revised grill and the whole car looks that little bit more aggressive than before. The rear looks like what came before yet overall, it still boasts modern, eye-pleasing lines.
The range is split three ways with the entry level Titanium FHEV (Full Hybrid Electric Vehicle) featured here accompanied by the mid-range ST-Line Hybrid and flagship ST-Line X PHEV AWD.
While the latter has plug-in hybrid capability, my base self-charging Titanium Hybrid was still mighty impressive.
The Titanium FHEV gets a 2.5L four-cylinder petrol engine mated to a 1.1kWh battery pack sending drive to the front wheels via an automatic transmission. Power is rated at 132kW and combined fuel consumption sits at 4.8L/100km.
The hybrid and petrol combination really work well together. There is a strong delivery of torque, and it never seems to run out of pu throughout the rev range. Another benefit is the hefty 900km of driving range which comes from battery and petrol engine working in unison. I also found myself averaging 5.4L/100km which was rather nice to see.
Switch over to sport mode and you can make some spirited progress – I was perfectly happy to dial it back to a sedate cruise in Normal or Eco mode and enjoy some frugal motorway miles.
Inside, it’s a touch of the familiar with a crisp edge. I especially like the 13.2-inch touch screen infotainment system with Ford’s latest SYNC4 connectivity technology. Ford say this new system is twice as powerful as the previous generation and features 5G connectivity and cloud-connected navigation which gives the driver a constant heads up for any annoying tra c congestion on route.
Wireless charging, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and a very clear and concise 360-degree rear view camera all come as standard, as does a raft of safety and convenience features such as blind spot monitoring, lane departure aid with warning and a revamped adaptive cruise control system that now allows the car to slow itself for corners and intersections.
While there are still some hard plastics around the cabin, the new Escape claws back points by serving up a set of incredibly comfortable seats, which happen to be quite supportive too.
I really enjoyed my time with the new Ford Escape FHEV. These subtle tweaks have turned good car into a great one. Choosing from the range of mid-sized SUV segment just got harder.

Behind the Scenes
North Canterbury is full of surprises. A couple of years ago, Essence publisher Dorothy told us she had spotted the hull of an old ship that had emerged from the sand near the beach where she lives. Since then, the remains of the ship have been removed.
Testing of the timbers confirmed they were English oak and elm – which were apparently typical shipbuilding timbers in the 1800s. From this information, researchers believe it’s an old British brig, called the Thames. But it shows how easily local history can be lost. It’s a theme that came up again recently when we went to visit the Kowai Archives, a group dedicated to preserving local historical records. They meticulously index every item they receive – from photographs to newspaper clippings and

old school rolls. They are providing an amazing service to the community by preserving local history.
History also plays a part in the awardwinning Loburn home we feature in this issue. Builder Simon Banks had to source secondhand tools and equipment to work on some of the old-style joinery. Old techniques required old tools, he told us. The resulting home, with its natural timber and huge beams, is spectacular.
Our region is rich in history – it’s often interesting and informative and, yes, even fun. So next time you spot one of those small town museums, take a few moments to pop in and have a look around. You never know what you might discover.

As both a local MP from North Canterbury, and as Associate Health Minister for rural health, it was important for me to hear from health workers and volunteers in Hanmer Springs, the fifth location for my recent rural health roadshow.
As local MP I am of course a big advocate of the Waimakariri and I enjoy promoting the area to visitors. So I was excited to hear that the Oxford Forest Conser vation
Living in North Canterbury I know firsthand how important it is that the unique local context is taken into account when making decisions about how health services are run.
New Zealand’s newest Dark Sky Park.
We all know how beautiful our skies are, especially in rural areas like Oxford, but we often take this for granted, which is why I am proud of the work which has been under taken by all those involved in Oxford’s Dark Sky project.
Having also visited Levin, Wairoa, Wānaka and Ōamaru, I have gained some valuable insight and been able to hear how well the Rural Health Strategy is being implemented with this roadshow. It’s been good to visit local health centres to hear about the challenges and opportunities health workers are facing, and I am grateful to all those who came from across the wider North Canterbury region to share their experiences recently. I want to thank them for the commitment, dedication, and expertise these people bring and acknowledge the di erence they are making in our communities.
Visitors I have met from places like the UK are amazed by our night skies and it’s something we should be harnessing more as a drawcard for tourists. This is just one more thing to put Waimakariri on the map for both international and domestic tourism
When I talk to rural communities, I often hear access to urgent and after-hours services is a concern. In fact I heard from hardworking farmers at Fieldays back in June that access to healthcare is one of the biggest concerns for people living in rural and remote communities.
I am a frequent visitor to schools around the electorate and I feel sure those I have spoken to recently will be happy with the Government’s recent action in the education sphere. As well as banning
This is why I was pleased to hear that Health New Zealand engaged Community Wellbeing North Canterbury Trust (a charitable organisation based in Rangiora) to provide counselling and social work care in Hurunui.
Another local example is Mana Ake –Stronger for Tomorrow - a mental health and wellbeing initiative supporting primary and intermediate school children.
All New Zealanders deserve timely access to quality health care and this Government is committed to improving health and mental health outcomes, including for the one in five living in our rural communities.

Buildings, Wgtn
Keeping the records
On a long, quiet country road passing paddocks and the occasional farmhouse, the Kowai Archives Society building stands alone.
With its crisp cream exterior and neat mint green trim, it seems fitting that a building that preserves the area’s history is so well-preserved itself.
It wasn’t always this way though, says Kaiapoi Archives Society President Terry Green. The building started life as a peace memorial in 1922 and was also the official local government premises of Kowai County. When Kowai County merged with Hurunui, they moved to the council offices at Amberley. That was in 1976, and the building was left unused.
For many years it was an informal storeroom and at times a carpentry workshop.
“It was almost derelict,” says Terry. “At one point there were pigeons nesting, blocking up all the spouting, and rainwater damaged the walls.” It’s hard to imagine today. From the marble roll of honour plaques in the entrance way to the photographs and library in the main display room, everything seems cared for.
The records themselves are often donated. “People are moving and they might find an old shoebox under the bed, or in the roof,” says Terry, gesturing at the floor to ceiling shelves in the storage room. The shelves are stacked with neatly labelled boxes holding school rolls dating back to the late 1800s, minutes from now defunct clubs and groups, newspaper clippings and old photographs.
Volunteer researcher Anne Lemon has lived in the area for 70 years and is fascinated by local history. She was a member of the Amberley Historical Society and has also helped to maintain Amberley’s Cob Cottage. Now she spends a lot of time helping people research their family trees.
“Ancestry.com is a good starting point,” she advises those who are getting started on their family history. Terry and Anne are two of a small group of volunteers who keep the Kowai Archives going. They would be delighted to welcome new volunteers to the archives, particularly those with an interest in preserving local history that is so easily lost. To get involved, get in touch. E-mail: kowai.archives@gmail.com
The Kowai Archives is open on Wednesday afternoons from 1pm to 4pm and every second Sunday.
Kowai Archives holds historical records for businesses and people between the Ashley and Waipara Rivers. These include:
• School rolls and class photographs
• Photographs of people, places and events
• Baptisms, marriages and cemetery records
• Clubs, associations and business minute and record books
• Newspaper clippings from the 1870s to the present day
• Scrapbooks and family trees
• Old maps, indexes for land titles and Horrell Files

A Loburn Lookout
On a 4-hectare lifestyle block in the rolling hills of Loburn, Simon and Rachel Banks have created an utterly unique family home.
WORDS: PATTIE PEGLER IMAGES: SUPPLIED
The sweeping views across North Canterbury from Pegasus Bay to Mt Hutt are certainly eye-catching, but turn your attention to the house itself and it’s not hard to spot its award-winning quality.
The Plan
As the couple behind a successful North Canterbury building company, Simon and Rachel had a clear idea of what they wanted from their own home. The overall vision was to create a New Zealand lodge or station style home with an alpine feel and to do this with a sustainable approach. This philosophy comes together particularly in the roof above the ‘Great Room’ which soars to an eight-metre-high apex where large beams, rafters and braces are held together with oak pegs. It’s a stunning and stylish lounge - the perfect area to sit back, relax and enjoy the views.
The two-storey home took about a year to plan and design. “I’ve designed houses for years,” says Simon. “But this was the first house where my daughter, who was studying to become an architectural technician, was involved. We sat for hours at the computer getting everything just right.” The post and beam construction added a layer of complexity for the engineer too as proportionate aesthetics needed to be maintained.
Then there was the issue of sourcing sustainable materials. Back in the 1800s, New Zealand timber was used straight off the mill with no further refinement Simon notes. However, today it’s much harder to find unprocessed timber. So, Simon and Rachel went straight to a local miller, dropped trees, seasoned them, and kept detailing to a minimum.
The Build
The build itself took around four years with Simon doing much of the work himself. He was still building homes for clients, so would head to work in the morning and help his staff, before working on the family home from 2pm to 9.30pm most days. It was “pretty gruelling,” he admits.
When 65 tonnes of macrocarpa beams were delivered, he was determined to do all the joinery on site himself. The main structural posts were six metres long and 250mm square and each one had several mortise and tenon connections and various rebates from top to bottom. “So try working that out between two sawhorses and then lifting them into position on your own,” laughs Simon.
There was a lot to learn about mortise and tenon work too. Simon got good advice from a friend who has American timber frame expertise. “Most people associate ‘rustic’ with ‘rough’ but that is not the case at all,” he says. “You need a greater skill level when natural timber is on show – you can’t sand or fill a mistake on sawn timber. You can’t paint or tile over it. It involves big accurate joinery on site where factory gear is not available. You get one shot at it.”
Old techniques required old tools, so some equipment had to be sourced second hand or imported.
There were also a few stressful moments. Simon and Rachel started the build as news of the pandemic was ramping up, so there was a degree of uncertainty and, like many who were building, they were susceptible to the problems of supply lines, material shortages and price increases.
On one occasion, a fire started spontaneously from some oily rags on site. Simon turned up to discover a bag of rubbish and a veranda post on fire. Another time, severe weather washed out a stormwater pipe, damaging much of their landscaping. On more than one occasion, Simon had to leave the site because of lightning.
There was stress off site as well. “The family had to put up with living in a bedsit, at my brother’s house, a site shed and work yard. Then suffer gib dust through just about everything we own. So just because you are a builder it does not mean it is any easier,” says Simon.
Today
The result, however, was certainly worth it. Simon and Rachel live in their gorgeous home with their two daughters, Westley the Seal Burmese cat and Wolfie, a big beardie sheep dog. Plus
“about 30,000 possums” in the neighboring forest. There is plenty of space for all, with approximately 200 square metres on the ground floor and a further 100 square meters on the upper floor. The ground floor includes three bedrooms, a dining room, kitchen and living area. Upstairs in the roof space there is a large master bedroom with en-suite and a separate media room.
As for their favourite spots, there is one for each season and time of day. In the morning the sunny bay window is great for breakfast; after work is best spent on the couch and some nights are great on the outside deck in front of the fire.
Simon has been building houses since he was 17. But, he says, building for his own family has certainly given him “a reminder of the need to keep relevant, have empathy and understand a client’s emotions during the build process”.

EW A R E LOVING LOCAL Cust
A quick tour around Cust
There’s a lot more to Cust than first meets the eye. Stop in this picturesque rural town and you’ll soon start to notice some of its attractions.
Cust started life as a service town for the surrounding rural area in the mid 1800s. It was first known as Moeraki Downs, then for a time as Middleton or Middleton-on-the-Cust as it was the middle town between Oxford and Rangiora. Later it became Cust, after the nearby river. The river itself was named after General Sir Edward Cust who was a member of the Canterbury Association for a few months. Cust himself never visited New Zealand. Yet he did donate a bell for the St James church in the 1860s.
By the late 1800s, the town was already well established. There was the Cust Hotel, which offered accommodation and became licensed in 1863. In the 1870s, a railway station was constructed on the Oxford to Rangiora line and there were two trains a day carrying a mix of passengers and freight.
The railway was closed down in 1959, despite a petition to Parliament asking that any decision to be demolish the Oxford branch railway line be revoked. A brief report in The Press at the time tells that the petition, signed by 149 people, was presented on behalf of the Oxford and Cust branches of Federated Farmers.

The NZ Motorcycle Grand Prix was a big drawcard for Cust in the mid-1900s. A race was held every Easter from 1936 to 1940, with a break during WWII and a return in 1947. It became an annual event in Cust, drawing up to 20,000 visitors each time. In 1963 however, the race was moved to Ruapuna Raceway.
Today, visitors to Cust can grab a coffee, browse the unique shops and soak up the views and history of this charming rural town.

ROAST BEETROOT SALAD WITH DILL YOGHURT & CINNAMON-SPICED ALMONDS
Prep time 20 minutes
Cook time 45 minutes SERVES 4
INGREDIENTS
• 1 kg beetroot, skin left on
• 3 Tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 tsp pure maple syrup
• Pinch of salt flakes
• 90g (2 cups) baby spinach leaves
• 1 small red onion, very finely sliced
• 1 large handful of dill, roughly chopped CINNAMON-SPICED ALMONDS
• 3 Tbsp brown sugar
• 1 tsp ground cinnamon
• 1/2 tsp salt flakes
• 100g (1 cup) whole almonds
DILL YOGHURT
• 250g (1 cup) Greek yoghurt
• 2 Tbsp tahini
• 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
• 1 small handful of dill, finely chopped freshly ground black pepper
METHOD
Preheat the oven to 200°C (fan-forced). Line a baking tray with baking paper. Wrap each beetroot individually in foil and place on the tray. Roast for 45 minutes until the beetroot is tender when pierced with the tip of a knife. Allow to cool, then peel and cut into wedges.
Place the beetroot in a bowl. Add the olive oil, maple syrup and salt. Toss to coat and set aside.
Now for the cinnamon-spiced almonds. Heat a small frying pan over medium heat. Add the sugar, cinnamon, salt and 1 tablespoon water and stir until the sugar dissolves. Now add the almonds and cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes until the nuts are coated in the sticky, sweet spice mixture. Transfer to a baking tray to cool, then roughly chop.
On to the dill yoghurt. Combine the yoghurt, tahini, lemon juice and dill in a bowl. Stir until smooth. Scatter the spinach over a serving plate, then add the beetroot wedges, onion and dill. Dollop the dill yoghurt over the salad, grind over some pepper, then sprinkle the cinnamon-spiced almonds on top for some crunch. Serve immediately.

CHANGING Frames
If you need to wear glasses all the time, it becomes even more important to feel good about your frames. It’s one of the reasons people love clip on frames, says Amanda Rowe, owner of Eye-dentity Optical in Rangiora.
Originating in France, Face & Cie interchangeable frames allow the wearer to change the colour and style of their glasses with a range of simple clip on frames, that fit their regular frames. It’s a great way to ensure your glasses match your style or even your mood, without having to buy new lenses and frames every time you want to change it up.
“There are hundreds of different colours,” says Amanda. “They’re really popular, particularly with customers who like to mix and match frames with their outfits.”
They also make changing the look of your specs far more affordable. Think of your glasses as an extension of your wardrobe – clip on the frame that suits your mood for the day.
