ON THE
RISE
One year at the helm of Breads of Europe and a family bakery business is on the rise.
P
urchased in a leap of faith, Brian Cook and Lydia Schroder have embraced the opportunity to sink their teeth into the wholesale bakery business specialising in European style bread, made from scratch with no preservatives or emulsifiers - it’s the first time Breads of Europe has been owned by a baker. Brian, 42, has perfected his passion
since age 15, starting at Blanchfields in Greymouth and enjoying 10 years at Sydenham Bakery. He is an accomplished baker whose focus is creating beautiful, handmade product. In 2010 the pair opened Una Bakery, a popular bakery in Huntsbury, which they sold in August 2016
to concentrate on Breads of Europe. Lydia, the Operations and Sales Manager, has worked in the hospitality industry for 20 years, in that time working in and managing many of Christchurch’s iconic restaurants including The Coca Club, Indochine and Chinwag. As customer care is her passion, the couple jointly has the recipe for success. They have two little boys, Rocco and the youngest, Jett – who loves to visit dad at work. A great selection of Breads of Europe’s range is sold at FreshChoice Merivale, Barrington and Parklands; Supervalue Sumner Lyttelton, and Fendalton, and Raeward Fresh Tower Junction. The business also supplies many restaurants and cafés in the Canterbury region. Surplus product is donated to primary schools, Aviva and youth groups. “Our focus is to really get to know our customers,” Lydia says. “The last year has been full of challenges, but people have noticed improvements in both the product and service.” Visit www.breadsofeurope.co.nz
