Before Sukhi and Joanna Gill had Little India, one of New Zealand’s favourite spots for Indian cuisine, they had Sukhi’s mother’s recipes and familial passion for food. Betting on themselves, the pair built a legacy – one that still honours their founding values and faith in family. In her conversation with the Gills, deputy editor Tamara Pitelen shares an incredibly moving story on their sacrifices and passing of the torch to son Arjun Gill.
For many, family is a defining and foundational element of entrepreneurial or passion-driven activity. Yet there is bravery in following dreams solo – sometimes it pays to be selfish. Songstress Nyree Huyser sought to rediscover the woman she was before motherhood, a spark to prove she could succeed on the stage and as a parent. When I first saw Nyree perform
at Ballantynes Fashion Week last year I was spellbound, and I’m just as impressed by her story. Read about her journey as told by Metropol writer Hannah Brown from page 8.
Some say that snow soothes the soul. Truth to it or not, Canterbury’s beautifully dusted white surrounds invite us to find out. Many fond childhood memories are that of snow angels and road trips inland to places that felt otherworldly. It’s hard to beat the feeling of crisp winter air on the skin and fluffy snow underfoot. As ski fields nationwide open their slopes, it’s opportune to experience these spaces of winter wonder right on our doorstep – Mt Hutt ski area has been rated New Zealand’s best for 10 consecutive years. You will find a round-up of a few of our favourites in our winter family feature within.
That’s not to say I couldn’t do without these cold snaps –why must winter be so wintry? While cooped up inside, we bring you all the ways to make your space more soothing, somewhere you enjoy coming home to. Speaking of places to enjoy, I’m thrilled to say Pauline and Allan Dann will be treated to a one-night city staycation thanks to our giveaway with The Court Theatre and Crowne Plaza.
If you’re feeling snowed down in winter woes, this issue might be the pick-me-up you need. If not, there is a heavenly microwave chocolate mug cake on page 38.

A rogan josh experiment one Friday night in 1988 Dunedin was the seed of Little India, a family-owned group of Indian restaurants that now spans the country. This isn’t just a business story though; Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen discovers a legacy built on hard work, migration, and an unshakable belief in family.
In 1988, Sukhi and Joanna Gill ran a small dairy and adjoining fish and chip shop in Dunedin. With a six-month-old baby and two children under four, failure wasn’t an option.
“It had to work,” says Sukhi, recalling those early days that sparked a culinary revolution and led to the Little India chain of seven restaurants across New Zealand.
The turning point came when Sukhi’s parents visited from India. The couple added some of his mum Premjit Kaur Gill’s Indian recipes to the menu.
“On Friday nights, we used to get two kilos of lamb and make lamb curry with rice, rogan josh. It got really popular. We used to sell out very quickly,” Sukhi says.
Joanna, a United Kingdom-trained chef, and Premjit, cooked curry upstairs in their flat on a single electric stove. “Suddenly, we had queues out the door of our small takeaway. We had to give away free Cokes to keep people calm while they waited.”
Two kilos of lamb quickly became six, and soon the couple opened their first restaurant. For more than six years, they only took Christmas and Boxing Day off.
That dedication built what became one of Christchurch’s best-known Indian restaurant brands. Back then, it was just Sukhi and Joanna – two hardworking parents building a new life in New Zealand after emigrating from the UK in 1986.
A family recipe for success
“We were doing everything ourselves,” Joanna remembers.
“Sukhi was working front of house and in the kitchen, I was also in the kitchen. Our kids were little. We worked every single day.”
Was it easy to work together? “No, not always,” Joanna says. “But there was no time to argue,” Sukhi adds. “The kids were little, we had to drop them off at kindy, come back to clean the restaurant, do the prep work for the veggies...
“I used to go in early in the morning and clean and do all the prep. Sukhi would come in before the lunch service, and then I would pick up the kids, says Joanna.”
“The good thing is you have youth,” Sukhi says. “We were young, so we never thought ‘oh it’s going to be a tough day’, we just got on with it and the passion was there.”
All the recipes came from Premjit, now in her 90s. “She was the heart of it all,” Sukhi says. “Those first dishes we served came straight from her. She taught Joanna to cook by example, Jo just stood behind her and watched, that’s how she learnt.”
The couple offered something new to Dunedin – authentic Indian food without Westernised shortcuts. “Our motto was always ‘authentic Indian food – a real taste of India’,” says Sukhi. “We’ve stuck to that ever since. People know what they’re going to get.”
From their first restaurant, Little India expanded – firstly to Queenstown, then across the country. At its peak, there were 17 locations. After the Christchurch earthquakes and Covid-19, that number dropped to seven.
“The Christchurch earthquakes were devastating,” says Joanna. “Just as we were starting to recover from that, Covid-19 hit. It felt like starting from scratch again.”
Still, they stayed focused. “We didn’t jump on trends. We didn’t do fusion or reinvent the menu every few months,” says Joanna. “We just stuck to what we knew – quality food, consistent flavours, warm hospitality.”
Expansion and franchising
As the business grew, so did the workload. “There came a point when we just couldn’t run it all ourselves anymore,” Joanna says. “That’s when we decided to franchise.”
Franchising let them keep their values while giving trusted staff more responsibility. “Some of our current older franchisees started working with us in their 20s,” Sukhi says. “They grew with us. That’s the kind of family environment we’ve always tried to build.”
The rest of the Gill family has also played a part. Their son, Arjun, left school early and joined the business from the bottom rung. “When he said school wasn’t for him, we said, ‘fine, then you work’. He started as a dishwasher.” From there, Arjun worked every role in the business, including time in the kitchen learning to cook. He now oversees the national operations and co-authored the Little India at home: Indian dishes made easy cookbook with Joanna – adapting the original recipes so people could cook them at home. “We were getting so many requests from customers for our recipes,” says Joanna. “So we thought, why not share them?”
Beyond food, the Gills have supported their communities, sponsoring teams and schools, supporting charities like Cure Kids, and organising four tours to India for friends, colleagues and customers. “We took them to local golf clubs, on a luxury train journey, and to meet Sukhi’s family,” Joanna says.
Today, 34 years after opening that first restaurant in Dunedin, the Gills are passing the torch. “We’re gradually transitioning things to Arjun,” says Joanna. “It’s not easy to let go, this business has been our life, but it’s time.”
Sukhi agrees. “There’s no shortcut to this kind of success. You have to believe in yourself. I used to say, ‘While everyone else invests in the share market, I invest in me and I expect a return.’ That’s how we built Little India.”
Built it they have. A chain of restaurants and a lasting legacy. A family business that now spans the country, touching thousands of lives along the way. All because Sukhi’s mum had a great recipe for rogan josh.

Christchurch-based vocalist Nyree Huyser is no stranger to the stage. Her rich, soulful sound commands attention and powerhouse vocals are her signature. Behind the spotlight is a story that spans continents, careers, and a powerful reconnection with the music that first moved her, Metropol writer Hannah Brown discovers.
It wasn’t until Nyree Huyser discovered the powerhouse voices of Céline Dion, Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey that something truly clicked. “I was astounded by the emotions they could stir in me just by listening to their voices. From then on, I was hooked, I wanted to be just like these women.”
Born in a small town outside of Glasgow, Nyree grew up in a home where music was ever-present – her parents would listen to 70s rock around the house and on road trips.
Music became her refuge during difficult times, especially after her parents divorced when she was eight. “Those years were very tough. I used music as an escape. It was pretty much like therapy for me,” she says. Belting out ballads behind a closed bedroom door was as much a release as it was early training.
“I loved performing, I was always very confident. I felt at home on the stage.” Her vocal foundation was laid early, Céline Dion’s The Colour of My Love on repeat, every lyric memorised, every riff studied and imitated. “I guess you could say that album was my vocal tuition,” she reflects. “It made me realise music and singing was always going to be a huge part of my life.”
At 19, a major turning point arrived when she was invited to join a professional ABBA tribute act. It was her first paid job in music, and the experience touring across the UK, Europe and the Philippines set a new course. “It showed me that it was indeed possible to pursue a career in entertainment,” she says.
Nyree moved from the United Kingdom to Aotearoa to be with her now-husband. Compared to the hustle and bustle she had known, New Zealand’s relaxed way of life instantly felt like “home”. Then came motherhood. Three children later, and a hiatus from music that stretched into years, Nyree began to wonder if her performance days were behind her. “I thought my music career was a thing of the past, something I could look back on and be proud of,” she admits – until, “after 20 years of applying to be on a reality talent show”, The Voice offered her a chance.
Stepping onto that stage was, in her words, “the most nervous I have ever been.” Standing behind the iconic doors waiting for them to open, with cameras rolling and Rita Ora on the other side, Nyree felt “an exciting kind of terrifying” – a feeling she wasn’t about to back away from.
Her recent EP Undiscovered, the single By The River, and even a festive track, I Remember Christmas, mark what she describes as a bucket list chapter. “My album Fixing Heads and Chasing Tails was a multi-genre release, a kind of creative cleansing,” she says. “Now I’m in a space to revisit big vocals, big emotion and big instrumental sound.”
Songwriting, once something she approached with caution, is now becoming a more intuitive and personal process. She’s learning to “put less weight on what others think,” and trust her instincts. “I draw from my own emotions, mental struggles, empowerment, self-confidence. I want to write more meaningful music, music that draws out feeling and emotion like what I used to feel listening to albums as a kid.”
The practical side of creativity, however, requires its own rituals including quiet, tidy spaces, low lighting, flowers, and candles.
Her time on the show gave her back a sense of self. “I had just had my third child… I had lost a lot of who I was before I had children. The Voice sparked my joy for music and proved to me that I wasn’t done, that I can still be a good mum and shine my own light at the same time.”
A standout moment from her time on the show was the battle round duet with fellow contestant Tarryn Stokes. “Singing Alone gave us an immense sense of sisterhood, mutual respect and genuine support for one another,” she recalls. “It was a very special performance for both of us.”
Nyree’s sound has continued to evolve. In her early 20s, she pivoted to electronic music, writing and recording for DJs and producers. More recently, she’s returned to the big, emotive vocal style that first inspired her, citing artists like Jazmine Sullivan, RAYE, Adele and Angie Stone as current influences. “I’ve gone right back to my roots,” she says.
“Of course, with three children at home this is not always easy,” she laughs. “I usually do this when I’m out of town for an event and have some downtime at the hotel.”
Right now, she’s deep in writing mode, working on a second album and collaborating with other songwriters. “As an artist I am now more secure about my style and identity. Expect a more mature, classic and powerful album, more along the lines of By The River.”
Off the stage, Nyree has been building momentum through live shows and performances with orchestral production Synthony, while also continuing to tour her Céline Dion tribute show internationally. Musical theatre might be on the horizon next.
And her unique name? It brings the Glaswegian’s story full circle. “I was named after a New Zealandborn actress, Nyree Dawn Porter. I had no roots in New Zealand at all,” she says. A 2012 visit changed everything. “It wasn’t until I came here that I felt, for the first time in my life, I was home.”
With new music on the way, Nyree’s journey continues to blend strength, soul and transformation. She’s still dreaming of touring Aotearoa and Australia with a live orchestral show, performing at Christchurch’s new stadium, and more. “If I’ve learned anything,” she says, “it’s that it’s never too late, and anything is possible.”
Nyree performs The Power of Celine at the Rangiora RSA on 13 September and Hollywood Glamour at The Piano on 23 October.

Your guide to après-ski
Eat: Book in at a nearby restaurant to enjoy and connect with others, warming your belly up after a busy and tiring day.
Drink: Before your dinner reservation, find a cosy bar or tasting room and sit fireside – it could be joining friends made on the slopes. Hydration is key after a day on the snow, so be mindful of consuming enough water to balance any alcohol in your system.
Unwind: Relax at nearby hot pools in Methven or Hanmer Springs, simultaneously soothing your muscles through heat and jet massage.
Pamper: Hold après-ski to its international value by treating yourself to a serene skin or body treatment at a local spa studio.
Prepare for snow play by:
• Layering up in the right gear. Warm, waterproof and insulated clothing is ideal, alongside the right accessories and equipment for playing in the snow or shredding the mountain.
• Packing the essentials: sunscreen, a first-aid kit, extra base and outer layers, water.
• Not forgetting fuel: No, not gas –the fuel that will keep your children energised after an exhilarating yet exhausting day in the snow. Sandwiches, trail mix, granola bars, fruit, and sweets such as chocolate are great.
• Being aware of your route, the conditions, and your vehicle. Know where you’re going and take steps to get there safely, and be ready with snow chains when travelling to a ski area.
• Heading away early and allowing time for stops and snack breaks.

I am looking at buying a business, how do I go about financing it?
When financing a business purchase, it is important that you try to find the most effective method of doing so.
If you have equity in your own home, it may be possible to use this equity to borrow against. In addition, the interest on a loan borrowed against a residential property is likely to be much less than a commercial loan, and the loan principal can be paid off over a longer period than a commercial loan, making repayment levels easier for the borrower.
It will be very important to have a
business plan in place with financial projections which can be shared with the lender at the time of application for a loan, showing the ability of the business to service and repay the loan. You can prepare this yourself, or (preferably) seek professional advice from an accountant, who can offer further advice to you regarding your business plan.
We have good connections with banks and other lenders, and so we can assist in directing a Purchaser to a good source of loan funds if required.

On 28 May the RBNZ cut the OCR by 0.25%, bringing the cash rate down to 3.25%. For now. The next review of the OCR is coming on 9 July and the RBNZ has signalled it’s likely to be cut further; its current forecast anticipates the bottom to be 2.75% by about March 2026.
On making the most recent OCR announcement, RBNZ chief economist Paul Conway said: “Lower interest rates in the economy are encouraging households to spend more and businesses to invest. When we combine that with strong earnings in parts of our export sector, these lower interest rates are helping the economy to recover. But there is high uncertainty both here and abroad about the economic effects of global tariffs.”
A drop in the OCR does tend to lead to more favourable lending conditions, lower interest rates in other words. While banks don’t always immediately reflect these cuts in their mortgage rates, it’s expected that even more competitive lending offers are on the horizon, providing more flexibility for those planning ahead.
So far though, there’s been little cut through on this. As economist Tony Alexander wrote in his June 2025 newsletter, “data from Statistics NZ tell us consumers are not responding to lower interest rates by raising their spending”.
“People are firmly saying that they intend keeping their wallets closed,” Tony writes.
In the wake of the most recent OCR cut, Kiwibank chief economist Jarrod Kerr wrote: “There’s no doubt that the Kiwi economy needs support. The risks to the growth outlook are tilted to the downside… the Government’s hands are tied (self-inflicted). So, we look to the RBNZ. In the current environment, with a future clouded by the tariff trade war, there’s more for the central bank to do to support the recovery.”
Let’s not forget that back in 2015, the OCR rate was dropped to 2.5%. At the time, the RBNZ said: “Globally, economic growth is below average and inflation is low… markets are also focused on the expected tightening of policy in the United States and the prospect of an increasing divergence between monetary policies in the major economies.” As the old saying goes, ‘everything changes and everything stays the same.’
What does it mean for house prices? In truth, no one really knows, however, the RBNZ are forecasting that house prices will recover to their 2022 peak over the next three years to 2028.
Currently though, latest REINZ data is telling us house prices are falling again (down three months in a row). Why? Several reasons. The REINZ lists factors including the fall in net migration; developers trying to sell excess stock (mostly townhouses); low job security; buyers wielding bargaining power, and an over-supply of rental property, all contributing to keeping house prices at the same level for the last four years.
As Opes Partners managing director Andrew Nicol writes: “Can we rely on the Reserve Bank’s house price forecast? No. House prices are notoriously hard to forecast. But for what it’s worth, they expect prices to rise 4.9% over the next 12 months.”
Whether that’s a positive or negative thing depends on whether you’re buying or selling.
Ultimately, though, the messaging from the RBNZ and their regular downgrading of growth projections suggests that the expected recovery in economic activity is forecast to be slower than projected in February - the RBNZ now projects 0.7% growth this year, down from 1%.
To use the word that the RBNZ wrote no fewer than 164 times in their 60-page Monetary Policy statement on 28 May, things remain ‘uncertain’.

The one KPI that drives everything.
In business, data is everywhere. Only one number, though, truly rules your world.
That’s your number: the single KPI that, if you nail it, almost everything else falls into place. Revenue, profit, customer satisfaction? They’re all by-products of this one critical metric.
Your number might be average sale value, leads generated per week, client retention rate, production yield, or even labour efficiency.
The point is: every business has a unique linchpin. You either know yours, or you’re flying blind.
Too many leaders drown in dashboards, obsessing over too many metrics. It’s noise. Focus is power. Identify your number, monitor it daily, and make sure every team member knows it. If they can’t quote it on the spot, you’re not leading – you’re hiding.
Don’t keep it buried in a spreadsheet. Make it visual. On a screen, on a wall, on the lunchroom whiteboard – whatever works. The goal is to make that number unmissable. Let it stare people in the face. Let it matter.
When your number is front and centre, it aligns teams, drives behaviour, and forces the right conversations. It creates accountability without micromanagement. Because when everyone knows the score, they know how to win.
So, what’s your number? Define it, track it, share it, live it. Then watch everything else start to move.
Do you want help identifying or implementing your number? Or do you need guidance to get on top of and understand your numbers generally (which is critical to business success)? Are you struggling to build visual tracking systems or align team focus? We’re here to help. Contact us at EBI for a no-obligation chat.

There is no better comfort from Mother Nature’s temperature chaos than cosying up in quality wool garments.
The Wool Company have all the layers you need to keep warm this winter, and each garment is made sustainably in New Zealand with natural fibres. “We have clocked up over 65 years in the wool industry, so we really know our wool,” says owner Margot Riach. “All of your winter woollies can be sourced from our company. We are local and each product is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable, establishing an ethical supply chain from manufacturer to consumer.”
Passionate about merino wool, Margot raves about the benefits. “Once you’ve discovered it, you won’t be without it. It’s best worn on the skin; merino regulates body temperature to provide optimal warmth without sacrificing breathability, and there’s no itch. Layer a soft merino slip or cami under a relaxed merino possum knit before finishing with one of our merino jackets and a scarf.”
For ultimate warmth, everyone should try merino possum mix, Margot says. “Possum fibre is 55% warmer than merino and a little bit goes a long way.” The team ensure that every product is curated with a focus on consumer fit, ensuring there’s something for everyone. “Incorporating products from The Wool Company into your winter wardrobe will provide sophistication, warmth, and comfort, meaning you can live your best life.”

Guiding correct teeth alignment and facial growth, new technology from Invisalign redefines how malocclusion, the imperfect alignment of teeth, is treated. Reducing the need for multiple dental appliances, the Invisalign System with mandibular advancement featuring occlusal blocks, advances and holds the mandible, moving the jaw forward and teeth into ideal position simultaneously.
The best part? This state-of-the-art appliance has been trialled and tested by one of Christchurch’s best orthodontists. With his advanced technical ability, Invisalign called upon OrthodontiX’s Dr Ronald Sluiter to practise and assess its feasibility before it went to market.
“The most ocurrent jaw issue is what we call a class II, where the lower jaw is further back compared to the upper jaw. This is the solution to that,” he says. Successfully resolving a 14-year-old’s concerns of protruding teeth at the Cashmere practice, Ronald says the treatment is an incredibly effective and efficient addition to the OrthodontiX suite of dental solutions. Plus, Invisalign’s SmartTrack material offers elevated patient comfort and compliance for optimal results.
Influencing the relationship between the top and bottom jaw, this technology answers the worries of many parents as their children’s mouths grow. Treatment is tailored to growth patterns, so book your free consultation now.

Heatless hair styling methods continue their stratospheric social media climb – yet how often do they fail to live up to the results we see online?
An inability to master a heatless hack can counteract its great benefit to hair health.
Heat-conscious hair styling is next in the line of defence to minimising damage and preventing frizz. A well-rounded diet alongside the appropriate hair care will help maintain healthy locks so that when you do style with heat it’s bouncy and beautiful.
Prevent and protect: Invest in high-quality heat protectant formulas and sprays which create a barrier to shield your hair from harsh heat. Keratin treatments help to repair and strengthen hair bonds while encouraging hair growth.
Limit frequency: Resist the urge to use heat in your hair too often – experts recommend no more than once a week in your hair styling routine. Use tools such as thermal rollers to reduce blow-dry time and heat damage.
Temperature control: Apply the lowest possible effective temperature when styling your hair with a heated tool. Stylists often encourage no higher than 150°C - 160°C for fine hair, and 170°C - 190°C for thicker locks.
More people are taping their mouths at night. Is it a viral fad or an evidence-based treatment for snoring and ill health?
It might sound unusual at first, yet mouth taping is becoming one of the most talked about wellness trends of 2025 among those looking to improve sleep, cure snoring and sleep apnea, and support overall health. The trend gained traction after the release of the bestselling book Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by journalist James Nestor, in which he explores the science of respiration.
The idea is simple: place a piece of tape over the lips before bed to encourage nasal breathing through the night.
“I was told by a Stanford researcher that she prescribes it to all of her patients,” James said in an interview with the BBC’s Science Focus. “The technology is pretty simple, but it is absolutely transformative to my sleep. And this is the one thing that I’ve heard from literally thousands of people that this is the biggest hack that they’ve had for their health.”
In his book, James outlines the many proven health benefits of proper breathing techniques and nasal breathing – such as improved oxygen efficiency, reduced snoring, better oral health, reduced stress, less sickness. He suggests mouth taping as a tool to help train the body to breathe through the nose during sleep.
James claims that humans have lost the ability to breathe properly and it’s making us sick. He says we should be nostril breathing – that mouth breathing can lead to a range of health issues from teeth cavities to chronic fatigue, stress, facial deformities, and bad breath in the morning. He highlights ancient practices that can improve respiratory health such as alternate nostril breathing.
Scientific evidence for mouth taping though remains limited. Most evidence is anecdotal or from small studies. Some sleep specialists note that while nose breathing does have known advantages, taping the mouth should be approached with care – particularly for those with underlying sleep disorders or breathing issues. It can be dangerous for those with undiagnosed sleep disorders or nasal obstructions. It’s best used cautiously and under medical advice.
The positives
Mouth taping promotes nasal breathing, may improve sleep quality, oral health and respiratory efficiency, which can improve oxygen uptake and endurance during exercise.
Potential risks and concerns
1. Underlying conditions: If you have obstructive sleep apnea, nasal congestion, or a deviated septum, taping your mouth can be dangerous. It may worsen breathing problems during sleep.
2. Improper use: Using the wrong kind of tape (too strong or irritating) can damage skin or cause allergic reactions. Fully sealing the mouth with tape can be risky, especially if you need to open your mouth to breathe.
Safe use tips (if you choose to try it):
• Consult your healthcare provider first, especially if you snore, have sleep apnea, or nasal issues.
• Use medical-grade micropore tape or specially designed mouth tape.
• Start slowly – try it during short naps or while awake.
• Never fully seal your mouth shut – just encourage it closed.

“Hidden Hearing Loss” and how we can help
Our ear is one of the most complex anatomies in the human body. It is responsible for converting sound waves into electrical signals and sending them up to our brain, where we need to make sense of those signals.
Some people have difficulty converting those electrical signals to understand speech. If you have good ‘hearing’, but struggle in background noise, remembering tasks or feel isolated from conversation, this may be
a sign of “Hidden Hearing Loss” or Auditory Processing Disorder (APD). APD can affect children and adults of all ages, whether you have hearing loss or not. We offer Auditory Training sessions and tailor hearing devices for your needs.
The importance of perfectly fitted dentures
I want to emphasise the significance of your first set of dentures, often referred to as immediate dentures. These initial dentures play a crucial role in establishing the foundation for comfortable eating, confident smiling, and overall satisfaction throughout your denturewearing journey.
At this stage, it is particularly important to address various aspects, such as achieving a natural and personalised appearance. We understand that a generic look is
something most people wish to avoid. Having a clinician who understands and is attentive to your individual needs during this critical period can truly make a difference. It can be the key to a positive long-term experience with your dentures, ensuring they become a comfortable and integral part of your life, rather than a source of discomfort.
Staying well as we age is important to all of us but getting the balance right for you can be tricky. At Stay Well Clinic, we examine and correct your sleep hygiene, improve relaxation techniques, individualise your exercise routines, balance your hormones, and select the correct diet and nutritional needs for you through integrative medicine.
I’m a registered pharmacist, health coach and integrative health practitioner, with a Master of Health Science in integrative medicine, and more than 20 years of experience. Through Zoom or in-person consultations, I can help you navigate the holistic approach to your own health and wellness.
So many are sick and tired of being sick and tired, but it can be confusing to know who to believe and what information to follow. Whilst allopathic medicine, complementary medicine and alternative medicine are terms that have been used for decades, integrative medicine takes the best of both worlds, tailoring any medical needs with your nutritional needs and lifestyle factors. I use high quality practitioneronly supplements, together with tailored
lifestyle advice that fits your personal health and wellness needs. When it comes to optimal health, taking a holistic approach is essential. Just changing what, when, and how you eat, can make a difference in how you feel, whilst getting you back on track for greater confidence in your current health. It’s time to take a 360-degree look at your health plan – including diet, nutrition, relaxation techniques, sleep hygiene, medication review, exercise and supplements. If you’re ready to make some changes, book a personal consultation with me, and we can review your health needs and create a health action plan that’s right for you.
It’s not just weight gain and hot flushes, menopause has a host of unusual symptoms, as Metropol deputy editor Tamara Pitelen knows only too well.
Hot flushes, weight gain and mood swings may steal the spotlight (got the t-shirt, ate the cookies...), yet menopause comes with a surprising array of lesserknown symptoms that can catch many women off guard, like they did with me (hello dry eyes, metallic taste, and insane new allergies...). After experiencing unexpected symptoms myself, I went in search of more unusual changes that women may experience during this hormonal transition, as well as natural remedies that could help - although every woman is different so I recommend doing your own research.
Electric shock sensations: Some women report tingling or sudden, brief zapping sensations in their hands, feet, or limbs – a strange and sometimes unsettling symptom thought to be caused by shifts in the nervous system.
Natural remedies: Vitamin B12 (nerve protection), ashwagandha (helps regulate stress response), acupuncture to rebalance nervous energy.
Others experience burning mouth syndrome, where the tongue, lips, or gums feel scalded or tingling for no apparent reason. It is thought to be linked to estrogen’s role in maintaining oral nerve health and moisture.
Natural Remedies: Aloe vera juice (soothing and antiinflammatory), baking soda rinse (neutralises mouth acids), avoid spicy or acidic foods, alpha-lipoic acid supplements (nerve-calming properties).
Dry, itchy eyes can become a problem in menopause because estrogen plays a role in tear production. As levels drop, eyes can become dry, gritty, itchy, or overly watery due to irritation.
Natural remedies: Rehydrate with eye drops, omega-3-rich fish oil supplements to nourish your eyes from the inside out.
A noticeable increase in bust size is also common. Known as the ‘matronly bosom’, many women are dismayed to find their breasts get a lot bigger as they go through menopause. The cause is hormonal shifts that cause body fat redistribution,
so it becomes increasingly stored around your waist and bust. Natural remedies: I wish I knew. Experts advocate a multipronged approach of hormonal balance, reducing stress and inflammation, avoiding sugars, ensuring adequate levels of vitamins and minerals, eating a rainbow of natural foods, getting plenty of sleep, weight-bearing movement, restoring gut health, supporting liver function... and the like.
Then there’s formication, the peculiar sensation of insects crawling on the skin. It’s linked to estrogen changes affecting sensory nerve endings.
Natural remedies: Evening primrose oil (supports skin and nerve health), cold compresses or oatmeal baths, limit stimulants like caffeine and sugar.
Some women even report a metallic taste in the mouth or sudden gum sensitivity, which can impact eating and oral health. Why? Hormonal shifts can affect your salivary glands and taste perception.
Natural Remedies: Lemon water (refreshes palate and saliva production), zinc supplements (supports taste and immune function), herbal rinses like sage or chamomile tea.
New allergies or sensitivities: Are you suddenly reacting to foods, perfumes, or environmental triggers that never bothered you before? I am. Estrogen plays a role in regulating immune response, so its decline may increase histamine activity or inflammation.
Natural Remedies: Quercetin (natural antihistamine), probiotics (support immune balance), nettle leaf tea (said to reduce allergic response).
These menopause symptoms are less discussed but not uncommon. Understanding the full scope of what menopause can bring helps demystify the experience and reminds women we’re not alone, even when our symptoms are a little unexpected. If you’re experiencing any of these unusual symptoms, they’re likely connected to hormonal shifts so working on hormone balance is key however it’s still worth consulting a healthcare provider to rule out other causes.

For uncovering the root cause of unexplained bone pain or diagnosing hidden injuries, precision is critical. Enter the SPECT-CT bone scan.
In the realm of advanced medical diagnostics, the SPECT-CT bone scan stands out as a pivotal tool, offering unparalleled insight into bone health. A powerful fusion of two imaging technologies, Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Computed Tomography (CT). This combination provides detailed three-dimensional images of your bones and helps identify areas of abnormal bone activity.
Now available at Reform Radiology’s Molecular Imaging and Therapy Centre, located opposite Forté Health on Kilmore St, the SPECT-CT bone scan provides both structural and metabolic information, making it invaluable for detecting subtle changes early.
As Reform’s radiologist and nuclear medicine specialist Dr Stefan Gabrielson explains, “Bone scans are one of the most highly sensitive tools we have in nuclear medicine – they can detect subtle metabolic changes early after symptom onset, often before abnormalities are visible on traditional x-rays.”
A SPECT-CT bone scan is instrumental in diagnosing a wide range of various bone-related conditions, including:
• Fractures: Detecting subtle fractures not visible on standard x-rays.
• Arthritis and degenerative diseases: Identifying early signs of joint inflammation and wear.
• Bone cancer and metastases: Locating primary bone cancers or identifying cancer spread from other body parts.
• Other bone disorders: Assessing conditions affecting bone metabolism and structure.
This powerful modality is also used to guide and monitor treatment plans, differentiate between benign and malignant bone lesions, and identify areas of pain that can be targeted, such as the location of back pain. A specialist or GP referral is required for a SPECT-CT bone scan.
Pre-examination:
You can usually eat and drink normally before your SPECT-CT bone scan.
The procedure:
Your scan involves two appointments on the same day. At the first, a small amount of radioactive tracer is injected into your arm – quick and straightforward. After a two to three-hour break (to allow the tracer to be absorbed by your bones), it’s time to return for imaging.
During the SPECT scan, you lie still on a table while a Gamma camera takes a combination of functional and anatomical images from multiple angles. The CT scan is performed immediately after the SPECT scan. It uses x-rays to provide detailed anatomical images of your bones. The scan is painless and takes about 30 to 45 minutes.
Afterwards:
The radiation dose is very low, but you’ll be advised to avoid close contact with young children or pregnant women for the rest of the day. Drinking water will help flush the tracer from your system. Results are reviewed by a nuclear medicine specialist and sent to your referring doctor. You can also access your images via the patient portal. For peace of mind through precision, visit the website below.

Baking is a mechanism in spreading kindness – and one Canterbury charity celebrating their 10th birthday has delivered more than 20,000 batches of made-with-love treats to communities in need.
The purpose of Good Bitches Baking is to bring a slice of sweetness into someone’s day who is having a difficulty,” Sally Clarke says. She’s the Head Bitch for the Christchurch chapter, managing 293 volunteer bakers and 72 recipient organisations. This is kindness in its sweetest form, and Sally’s crew is the second nationwide to reach a monumental 20,000 boxes of baking donated to people having a tough time.
Working with a wealth of generous Cantabrians, Sally says many sign on as volunteers through word-of-mouth or after receiving a box themselves. The process is simple, reuniting people with the nostalgic feel of homemade baking. Just once a month, bakers whip up treats of their choosing, with their own ingredients in their own home, and can deliver to an area and on a day that suits them. An overflowing neonatal unit is the receiver of one box per day.
The charity arose in 2014 when two women wanted to make a difference – baking was an ideal avenue to do so. Sally came across the initiative and the Christchurch chapter began soon after. To qualify for boxes of treats (made-with-love), recipients must have clients enduring some kind of difficulty. Christchurch sends over 300 boxes city-wide each month, with demand growing from both recipient organisations and keen volunteers. “I was very naïve when I started because I didn’t realise it was going to get so big.”
Part-time and unpaid, Sally says it’s the “perfect charity” for her, and many of her volunteer bakers too. With initiatives including Prison Bake and Business Bitching, and supportive sponsors including Harcourts Holmwood, Good Bitches Baking’s Christchurch chapter continues to bake up a big difference. Filled with wonderful flavours and colours, Filipino food is known for crafting dining experiences that delight the senses.
Christchurch is lucky enough to host an authentic restaurant – one that began as a family-run labour of love. Today, it has expanded to bring the joy of this cuisine to those who enjoy soul food.
Established in Dunedin in 2016, Manila Grill Restaurant was a humble dream brought to life by a family passionate about hospitality. “We had a dream of sharing the rich flavours of Filipino and Japanese cuisine with our new community,” says co-owner Mary Anne Duran. “What started as a small, family eatery soon became a place where people feel at home.”
Having opened in Christchurch in 2019, the team cook with heart, serving traditional dishes like crispy pata, lechon kawali, kare-kare, and adobo meals that remind many of home, introducing others to a love for their culture. Every dish is a piece of their story, seasoned with memories, heritage, and a lot of love.
“We don’t just serve food, we’re sharing culture, connection, and comfort, one plate at a time. When you dine with us, you become part of our journey.”

The Hanmer Springs Alpine Winter Festival takes place from 28 June to 12 July, and it’s a great time to see everything the village has to offer.
Thanks to the popular Alpine Winter Festival, the charming village of Hanmer Springs comes alive in winter. While there’s plenty to do and see at the festival, the rest of the village also puts out the welcome mat for visitors. Enjoy a fireside drink in a warm pub, savour local delicacies and soak up the welcoming atmosphere of this alpine community.
Not everyone enjoys being in the snow. For the culture vultures who prefer to stay warm and dry, a browse through Hanmer’s wonderful art galleries is a treat not to be missed. For the latest work from a range of local artists, galleries like the Tait on Conical Hill Rd showcase an impressive variety of beautiful work in a range of genres.
When snow graces the region, the Hanmer Springs Ski Area is a friendly, fun ski field that provides opportunities for skiing and snowboarding on gentle slopes, perfect for both beginners and families. For those seeking a more relaxed experience, ice-skating, snowshoeing, and tobogganing are delightful ways to explore the winter wonderland. Whether you’re hitting the slopes or sitting in your favourite restaurant, Hanmer Springs provides a perfect winter escape.
When winter blankets Hanmer Springs in snow, the alpine village transforms into a magical getaway perfect for families, couples, and anyone craving a seasonal escape. With its crisp air, stunning mountain views and welcoming vibe, there are endless ways to enjoy the snow.
Grab your warmest jacket and head to the open reserves and fields near Chisholm Crescent or Brooke Dawson Park – ideal spots for building snowmen, making snow angels, or having an impromptu snowball fight. If you’re keen to explore nature, the Hanmer Forest offers a peaceful winter walking experience, with trails winding through majestic Douglas firs and towering redwoods dusted in white.
After time in the snow, take a stroll through the village where boutique shops stock everything from stylish winter wear to handmade gifts. When it’s time to refuel, cosy cafés and restaurants serve up hearty meals, hot drinks and local fare – the perfect way to warm up and wind down.
Whether you’re chasing snowflakes or simply enjoying the season’s charm, Hanmer Springs is a South Island winter gem.

For much of my real estate career, I’ve been aware of a concept or process known as ‘dollar productivity’.
It’s a system that considers the –predominantly financial – value of every task undertaken in business. It makes sense as a measurement for allocating a level of significance to a range of activities and sorting the bigger, grittier jobs from those that are simpler and maybe not be as critical to the task at hand. It also helps decide who does what. In real estate that might mean an assistant does a lot of the tasks behind the scenes; ordering reports, distributing marketing material, setting up for open homes, amongst other activities. The consultant, meanwhile, works directly with the client; prospecting, listing, selling or negotiating a sale. And hopefully the post-sale care that such a relationship requires.
It all makes sense at a clinical level, but given I’ve learnt that culture and kindness can be a much greater determinant for success than strategy, I now question some of its importance.
Simply put, one of my personal beliefs is that we all make the world a better place by what we give, not just
what we receive, so I’m not a stickler for looking at life through the ‘dollar productivity is everything’ lens.
A recent interaction consolidated my thoughts.
I was asked by someone I didn’t know particularly well how long I’d been writing articles and “what I got out of it.” As in, what value did I gain through writing articles and was the task dollar productive?
Their question was simple enough, given I’ve had enormous benefits over two-and-a-half decades of penning my thoughts, but the value is not the kind they envisaged.
Being given the opportunity to share my beliefs and observations has been deeply symbolic for me and, I hope, of value to those that read my monthly ramblings. Writing has meant connecting with people everywhere and moving them with a coalface perspective of what’s happening for me, our business, the real estate world and the world in general. In fact, anything personal or otherwise that has grabbed my attention.
Off the top of my head, I’ve written over 600 articles starting from my first small musings, mostly real estatebased, to my current catalogue of
24 articles annually spread over three magazines and covering every imaginable topic, including homelessness, poor service, texting, generational differences and more.
I’ve had extensive feedback on just about everything I’ve written. One article was utilised as a section in a high school examination for a large number of students and a poem I shared (written by a family member) was sent out to parishioners to help in times of loss. If you use some sort of financial gauge when looking at all of this, you will completely miss the point.
As a result, I’ve learnt more from others and hope I’ve made a considered contribution to my industry and our community, while challenging some old dogmas along the way.
In essence, it’s about connection and contribution, not about capital.

Creating a calming environment doesn’t require a full renovation; it begins with thoughtful use of layout, lighting, colour, and materials that support emotional ease and daily balance.
Layout plays a key role in creating flow and function. Open-plan spaces that maintain clear zones for rest, work, and connection can help reduce visual and mental clutter. Adding quiet corners, like a window seat or a soft-lit reading nook, provide subtle opportunities for pause and reset.
Lighting is equally vital to wellbeing. Natural light regulates circadian rhythms, boosts mood, and enhances alertness during the day. Maximise daylight with sheer curtains or skylights, and complement it with warm, layered lighting in the evening to ease into relaxation.
When it comes to colour, earthy neutrals, muted greens, and soft blues are leading the way in wellness-inspired interiors. These tones evoke calm and connection with nature, a welcome antidote to overstimulation.
Speaking of nature, the use of natural materials like timber, wool, stone, and clay creates a tactile sense of grounding. These
elements invite sensory engagement while promoting sustainability, an ethos that, in itself, contributes to peace of mind.
Finally, while it takes a little more effort, devoting a weekend to a big declutter not only frees up space in your home, it frees up space in your mind and is a great way to feel lighter in your body as well as your living space. Give away, sell, and recycle as much as possible.
Christchurch homeowners are increasingly leaning into this ‘slow living’ design philosophy, blending function with feeling. Whether you’re redecorating a single room or building from the ground up, every design choice is an opportunity to create a space that not only looks good, it also makes you feel good too. After all, home should be more than shelter, it should be a space that restores, reflects, and nurtures the soul.
Brighten your home with beautiful silk flowers.
Looking to add a splash of colour and cheer to your home all year round? Silk flowers are a stunning, low-maintenance complement to real plants and blooms. Unlike fresh flowers, silk arrangements don’t wilt, require no watering, and remain vibrant no matter the season. They’re ideal for hardto-reach spaces, sunny spots too hot for real flowers, or rooms without enough light to support living plants. Available in a wide variety of colours and styles, silk flowers can be tailored to suit any décor, from modern minimalism to rustic charm.
They’re also allergy-friendly, long-lasting, and
budget-wise in the long term. You can rotate them seasonally, mix them with fresh greenery, or use them to create permanent centrepieces that never lose their charm.
Silk flowers don’t aim to replace the joy of fresh blooms but rather to enhance it, adding consistency, structure, and colour where live flowers may fall short. Combine them with real plants for a natural and balanced look, and enjoy the beauty they bring without the upkeep.
In short, silk flowers are a simple way to keep your home fresh, vibrant, and effortlessly stylish all year round.
Music is powerful – touching our hearts and minds and evoking emotions. Your favourite artist or ballad heard crisp and clear is a feeling hard to beat.
High-performance speakers, however, can be bulky and obtrusive in a sleek residential environment. The solution? Sonance Invisible speakers series from Soundline Audio. Seamlessly integrating into plaster walls, the ceilings of a home, or wallpapered over for complete concealment, these speakers don’t sacrifice interior design aesthetics. Sound isn’t muffled – instead heard with sensational clarity. Made in the United States, the makers of Sonance speakers have perfected their motion flex technology over 10 years.
Soundline Audio’s Terry Wyatt says the performance is as good as that of free-standing speakers. Another advantage is the 180 degree speaker sound dispersion – you can sit anywhere in a room and hear just the best music.
If you are building new or renovating a home, seek this invisible integrated sound system and 15-year warranty through the team at Soundline Audio.
Create your own calm at home with spaces that speak to serenity. Understated neutrals complement more striking colours of nature – both can join your décor as objects you actually reach for – like a teapot or hot water bottle cover.

Winter’s chill is settling in – not just for humans.
Professionals at finding the cosiest spot in the house, pets seek warmth in winter to escape the cold. Inching closer to the heat source, our pets become at risk of serious but unexpected burns or injuries – and are often completely oblivious to the danger.
Cases of winter-related pet injuries are not just common but a growing trend in Australia, with pet insurance companies encouraging owners to understand the risks cold weather presents. Hot drinks, fireplaces, hot water
bottles – these can result in scalds or injury when a pet’s desire to keep warm creeps in.
Instinct will urge your pet to position themselves, and sometimes their bed, as close to a fire or heater as possible. Putting themselves at risk of burns or overheating, this too increases the danger of bedding catching fire.
From supplemental heat to a wellrounded and nutrient-sufficent diet, consider the steps you can take to mitigate risk and avoid unexpected vet visits.
Paws, ears and tails are all susceptible to frostbite in Canterbury’s cold snaps. Most common after prolonged exposure and improper care combined with wet weather and wind chill, this condition can take several days to notice. Act quickly if concerns arise and take your pet to the vet immediately.
Keep your pet safe and warm in winter
1. Train pets to avoid jumping, sitting and sleeping on or close to the fireplace or heaters.
2. Place pet beds in sunlight and away from drafts –warm sunbeams are nature’s snuggle.
3. Dress pets sensibly when heading outdoors using coats and warm bedding for kennels.
4. Protect their paws with pet-friendly paw balms or booties to combat frosty pavements, ice and snow.
5. Prioritise indoor living if possible, and maintain a warm, sheltered area when left outside.
6. Provide supplemental heat. Invest in a pet-safe insulated blanket, and supervise your pet when in use.
7. Dry, winter air can cause dehydration – encourage your pet to hydrate often by ensuring they have access to fresh water.
8. Know your breed. Smaller pets, those with short coats, treasured elderly pets, and puppies and kittens are more likely to feel the chill. Take the appropriate measures to keep them warm and dry.
9. Maintain a balanced diet and exercise routine to manage winter weight (just like us).
10. Consider a winter check-up for seasonal aches and pains.
1. Watch for shivering, burrowing or anxious behaviour.
2. Monitor their movement – a slow or weak pet could indicate early signs of hypothermia.
3. Listen to their noises. A whining voice or consistent sounds of distress means something isn’t right.

Cutting edge design,
Nine Christchurch suburbs are poised to cross the million-dollar threshold in the next couple of years.
The next Christchurch suburbs most likely to be inducted into the million-dollar club appear most likely to be: Casebrook ($900,900), Ilam ($910,000), Halswell ($820,000), and St Albans ($755,000).
That’s according to Gavin Lloyd, the Property Sales Director for Trade Me, based on the average asking prices from their latest May data. He says, “Christchurch has been growing in popularity over the past few years as many Kiwis in the North Island head south in search of better property prospects and a better lifestyle.”
It does depend on who you ask though because, in addition to the suburbs flagged by Gavin, data analyst Cotality (previously CoreLogic) has named another three as soon-to-be milliondollar suburbs with a median value for free-standing homes of between $950,000 and $995,000. Namely: Aidanfield, Waimairi, and Marshland.
Then, if you ask Atom Go Tian, senior data analyst for Ray White, there are two more to add to the list: Upper Riccarton, ($975,000), thanks to its proximity to the University of Canterbury and established infrastructure, and Bryndwr, ($945,000), which neighbours Ilam.
These nine suburbs on the ‘will they, won’t they?’ million-dollar-watchlist are coming in behind those that have already passed the seven-figure mark, which include Fendalton, Merivale, Strowan, Cass Bay, Governors Bay, Harewood, Tai Tapu, and Prebbleton, along with all the hillside and south-east beach suburbs. Worth special mention in the latter is Scarborough, which often tops the lists of most expensive suburbs, holding the highest median property value.
What does it all mean? A few things, and for some, it’s not positive. First-time house buyers and younger generations could be forgiven for worrying that more suburbs crossing the million-dollar threshold means that the dream of homeownership is creeping further out of reach. A lack of affordable housing is bad for everyone. The upshot of more expensive housing has an impact on everything from more intergenerational living and people leaving to try their luck in places like Australia, Dubai, Europe; to people having to move further out of the city and contend with longer commutes. In turn, this has a knock-on effect on everything from public transport infrastructure to traffic jams and demands for more flexible work-from-home arrangements. It also means bigger mortgages, which means people have less money in their pockets to spend in the local economy. That’s less discretionary income for our local shops, cafés, restaurants, leisure and fitness businesses, our entertainment sector, and more.
For others, the rise of million-dollar suburbs is a positive sign – and it’s not just the real estate agents. The trend is a reflection of our region’s continued popularity. Ōtautahi is experiencing faster growth than other major cities like Auckland and Wellington because, while prices are slowly rising here, Ōtautahi still offers more affordable housing options when compared to other major urban centres. We also offer a globally enviable lifestyle and have easy access to incredible outdoor recreation and a vibrant city centre – one that is poised to get a lot more vibrant in the next five years with the opening of Te Kaha or One New Zealand Stadium, the Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre, and the Downtown Christchurch commercial and residential development.
Housing market sluggish
Interestingly though, while we contemplate the rising membership of the ‘million-dollar suburb club’, in real terms the housing market is slow, nationally and locally.
QV House Price Index operations manager James Wilson said, “The housing market is still softening, but doing so at a slowing pace with signs of tentative confidence beginning to surface.”
How is Waitaha Canterbury faring? The QV House Price Index (QV HPI) shows that Christchurch’s average home values rose 1.3% in the May quarter to $779,866.
QV HPI data also showed that Hurunui values saw a quarterly increase of 0.7% to a new average of $645,936, which is 1.8% lower year on year. Waimakariri recorded a modest increase of 0.2% to an average value of $720,376, which is 0.7% higher than in May last year.
Local QV registered valuer, Olivia Brownie says, “The property market in the Canterbury region remains stable, with buyers showing commitment to purchases and sellers pricing realistically. We continue to see a small, consistent positive market movement across the region as a whole.”
Civic buildings bring people of a community together and Te Whare Whakatere, Ashburton’s library and council administration building, has achieved just that.
Since it opened in January 2024, Te Whare Whakatere has been a place for business, for debate, for decisions and gatherings; it has also become a space for the community, who we see enjoying a modern library with laser cutters, a learning lab, recording studio and more.
Te Whare Whakatere’s design concept began its journey in 2018, with the architect consulting both the local council and the community about what makes this area special.
There were lots of ideas to integrate into the new building, many connected to the district’s braided river environment, bi-cultural heritage, and agricultural roots.
The building has many sustainable features, with a focus on timber, and the temperature is controlled by an artesian bore. The aim was for this project to be a boost to the town’s Central Business District, and a vision for the future.
The design inside represents the concept of working together, sharing the Māori heritage of our district over hundreds of years.
It’s a welcoming space, one place for all of us. I’m thankful to all involved and proud to have been a part of it.
About Te Whare Whakatere
Ashburton’s new civic centre, Te Whare Whakatere, includes a library, customer services counters, meeting rooms and events spaces, public and staff amenities, a café, a recording studio and learning lab, executive suites, Council chambers and staff workspaces, plus an IL4 Emergency Operations Centre. PHIL MAUGER
CHRISTCHURCH CITY | MAYOR
This will be my last Metropol column for the current mayoral term as we head into the local body election period.
Ihave thoroughly enjoyed my last three years in the role of Mayor. It seems fitting that we are currently celebrating Matariki – a chance to connect with the past, celebrate the present and look to the future . In this term, I’ve seen Ōtautahi Christchurch go from strength to strength. People want to live here, construction is happening all over the city, and the vibe around Christchurch and Banks Peninsula is buzzing. It’s been exciting to watch the One New Zealand Stadium rise out of the ground. This stunning facility will open in April next year. Parakiore Recreation and Sport Centre will also open this year, and in December, we host the National Summer Games for the first time in 20 years.
We’ve also just celebrated National Volunteer Week in recognition of all the people who give up their time to serve the community. A special thank you to all volunteers – you do amazing work. Lastly, a big thank you to everyone who has played a part in making Christchurch the vibrant city it is today. I can’t wait to see what the next three years will bring.
LEEANN WATSON BUSINESS CANTERBURY | CHIEF EXECUTIVE
Canterbury businesses can benefit from annoucements in the recent Budget.
Budget 2025 makes meaningful progress where it counts for Canterbury businesses, providing a platform for growth, helping rein in inflation and beginning to chip away at our infrastructure deficit. The centrepiece ‘Investment Boost’ initiative will provide a great platform for businesses to activate their growth plans, knowing they can reduce the financial impact at a time when cash is still tight. It will mean that for any purchase of productive assets (with some exclusions), 20% can be deducted from taxable income in that tax year, on top of standard depreciation.
As a growing region, Canterbury has a real opportunity to lead New Zealand’s economic recovery, but only if we have the infrastructure to enable that. Further investment in roading and rail is essential as the economy returns to growth mode.
Business Canterbury will continue to advocate for an environment that better enables productivity, innovation and sustainable growth.
Te Pae marks three years of success since first opening its doors.
Te Pae Christchurch is more than just a venue. It’s a gathering place where our community can come together to support one another. In recent months, our team have proudly supported and hosted several fundraising banquet events, helping to raise vital funds for local charities and community groups who work tirelessly to support those doing it tough.
Whether it’s ensuring that families have access to essential services or helping young people thrive, these events bring people together around a shared goal: strengthening our community. We’re honoured to play a part in helping these organisations shine and grow their impact.
This May marked three years since we hosted our first conference, and we’re proud to have become a trusted part of the Ōtautahi Christchurch community – a place where connection, compassion, and local pride take centre stage.

Tao Meng has been building that dream in Christchurch for five years. His latest developments exude just the charm and versatility expected from Tao Homes. Prioritising thoughtful design and ample storage, the team works with top architects to build homes with large, liveable spaces and flexible floor plans. On Whiteleigh Ave, this just-listed 42-unit project combines a central location near Apollo Projects Stadium and Westfield Mall with incredibly luxurious living spaces, including a balcony.
For lovers of refined city living, the Rimu St townhouses make a statement –strikingly minimalistic from the outside and the epitome of sophistication within. Double garages, established landscaping, contemporary interiors – these homes are designed for professionals and families, situated within four school zones.
Intricacies included, Tao doesn’t dabble in cookie-cutter townhouses. Homes are fitted with supreme fixings and finishings, including underfloor heating, smart techonology and keyless entry, he says. His desire to construct comfortable and functionable yet luxurious homes was born out of seeing the living conditions many Christchurch residents were stuck with, from damp and cold student housing to families stuck in homes with inadequate and poorly-designed space. While new insulation legislation increases his building costs, Tao says he couldn’t be happier with the reform.
A trusted low-maintenence investment property guaranteeing high rent and return, a suitable asset for a student, or a home you will finally enjoy living in – look no further.
Interest rates are dropping, Tao Homes’ attractive deposit is tempting, and Christchurch is bursting with new residents in love with its way of life. These homes don’t sit on the market for long. View the website or contact info@taohomes.co.nz now.

Restoring an 1880s schist stone cottage from Arrowtown’s gold mining history has been fraught with challenges.
Located at 8 Villiers St in Arrowtown, a significant piece of New Zealand’s early Chinese settler history has been structurally restored and preserved, thanks to a meticulous eight-month renovation led by Priority Projects’ Donna Gillatt.
Believed to be one of the first liveable dwellings built by Chinese miners in the late 1800s, the schist stone cottage is classified by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust. Measuring 8x8m – large by gold rush standards – it likely belonged to a relatively affluent Chinese settler. Over time, the cottage evolved into a well-loved family home, yet its oldest section, now used as a sleeping area, was in urgent need of seismic strengthening.
“The owners wanted assurance that, in the event of an earthquake, anyone sleeping in the original part – particularly their grandchildren –would be safe and have time to get out,” says Donna.
The project involved stripping the cottage back to its raw stone walls, removing all interior linings, decayed lime mortar and ageing timber. “We had to weaken it first in order to strengthen it, so there’s been a degree of risk,” Donna explains. “It’s been exciting but also nervewracking dealing with dirt floors and huge, heavy stones sinking into the ground. I had a couple of sleepless nights praying for no earthquakes.”
With input from engineers, stonemasons, and a full team of skilled tradespeople, the structure was remortared, reinforced, and re-roofed, all while preserving the building’s authenticity. In a country where such early dwellings are rare, the renovation stands as a model of sympathetic, technically challenging heritage work.
How would your exterior square up to the safety risks winter weather presents? Three easy install features lead the way to a safer season.
Come the dark, gloomy nights of winter, outdoor lighting does more than enhance exterior aesthetics. Improving visibility, built-in and additional lights placed around your property make it easier to see hazards and safely navigate pathways. Without outdoor lighting, potential intruders might take that as an invitation inside. A well-lit space discourages them.
Lighting transforms how we visualise a space, so use it to your aesthetic advantage. When building new, install lighting fixtures into eaves and fixed canopy roofs for ample outdoor lighting. To highlight tall features and add ambience, set lights facing upwards. To illuminate pathways and direct people through, use path lights that shine downwards. Combine form and function by uplighting trees, which will then light up pathways.
Offering support and stability, handrails and balustrades are a crucial safety feature in slippery winter weather, and an added sense of confidence for children, elderly and those with mobility issues.
Feel more comfortable enjoying your outdoor space in winter while adding character to your home. To weave this safety feature into a cohesive outdoor home experience, aim to marry the elements – colour, material, style, to what already sets your front’s façade. If your house radiates a modern vibe, consider a glass or aluminium balustrade, while classic or timber styles might suit a home with heritage charm.
Wrap your outdoor entertaining space in a windbreak – an ideal barrier to cold winds. Shielding plants and your property from harsh winds and damaging debris, windbreaks guard the area closest to your indoor living. Your chances of tripping over furniture displaced in strong winds could become a thing of the past.
Shield your space in style by opting for chic glass panes, just remember to keep them clean.
In a recent Christchurch home project, plain white GIB walls were turned into a series of beautifully textured surfaces using Otsumagaki, (Otsu for short), a Japanese-style compressed clay that delivers a luxurious, natural finish.
The project was a collaboration between Proudfoot Plastering and Sam Tuuta of Tuuta Design, and the result is nothing short of stunning. Otsu, available in an array of colours and finishes, highly polished or matte, offers a refined alternative to wallpaper or paint.
Offering a beautiful alternative to painted walls, this centuries-old Japanese technique has found a home in contemporary New Zealand interiors, thanks to craftspeople who have the skill and sensitivity to handle it. “We’re not just plasterers,” says Jason Roberts of Proudfoot Plastering. “It takes experience and finesse to get the right effect with this kind of specialised clay,” he explains. “When it’s done right, it creates the most beautiful interior spaces.”
Working closely with the client, the team created a finish that’s both unique and deeply sympathetic to the space. “Skill is required to get the right effect with this kind of specialised clay, and the result is a surface that transforms the entire room.”
Otsu doesn’t just add beauty, it brings texture, tone, and an almost tactile warmth. It can even be more affordable than wallpaper, offering a bespoke finish with enduring appeal.
It’s all about creating beautiful living spaces, Jason says. “It’s about more than covering walls, it’s about elevating the whole feel of a home.”
With craftsmanship at its core, Proudfoot Plastering is changing how we think about plaster, one elegant wall at a time.

With the year’s shortest, darkest day just behind us, we now ease deeper into winter, South Canterbury wraps itself in a quiet stillness – the kind that invites reflection and the small joys of slower living. While the days may be shorter, the spirit of our region is anything but dim.
In this issue of Essence South Canterbury, we explore the idea that life truly begins at retirement. Far from slowing down, many are embracing this chapter with curiosity, creativity, and joy. From exploring hidden walking tracks to learning new crafts, volunteering, or gathering for a friendly cuppa, South Canterbury’s older citizens are proving that life doesn’t just go on – it gets better.
This region offers so much for those looking to make the most of life, and the
charming town of Geraldine is a great example of that, plenty of open spaces, a strong sense of community, and rich cultural offerings. In this issue, we bring you a closer look at Geraldine.
We’re also proud to bring you a profile on one of South Canterbury’s most accomplished locals – former White Ferns captain Haidee Tiffen, whose story is as much about resilience and leadership as it is about homegrown talent. Her reflections on life after international sport are sure to resonate with anyone stepping into a new season of life.
As you settle in with this winter edition – whether that’s by the fire or with a thermos on a brisk walk – we hope you find inspiration in these pages. In South Canterbury, life is full of second winds, new passions, and communities that cheer you on every step of the way.
Widely regarded as one of the world’s best all-rounders, former White Fern Haidee Tiffen MNZM was recently inducted as a Sporting Legend of South Canterbury at the South Canterbury Sport and Recreation Awards.
Born and raised in Timaru, Haidee’s cricket journey began at Timaru Girls’ High School, where she stood out both academically and athletically, even serving as Head Girl. She debuted for the White Ferns at just 19, facing South Africa in the 1998-99 season.
Maria Lankeshwar, a former White Fern and classmate, described Haidee as a natural leader. “Even in high school, she knew when to get serious, when to lift others, and how to lead by example,” she said. Haidee’s playing style was a blend of tactical aggression and smart consistency. Batting in the middle order, she built innings with precision, while also making her mark as a reliable bowler and dynamic fielder. Her exceptional running between the wickets became legendary.
Haidee joins Colin Hawke and June Leslie as the most recent inductees to the Sporting Legends of South Canterbury. Reflecting on the honour, she says, “It was a complete and utter surprise. I’m incredibly humbled and proud to be from Timaru. The support from the community, my school, South Canterbury Cricket, and my family has meant so much.”
When asked whether talent or hard work defined her success, she emphasised the latter. “Some natural aptitude helps, but it was mostly hard work, dedication, and a desire to learn. My auntie, who used to drive me to Christchurch for training, was a huge influence. I also looked up to players like Debbie Hockley and Emily Drumm – getting to play alongside them and win a World Cup was incredible.”
A few standout moments in her playing career include the unforgettable 2000 World Cup final, where New Zealand beat Australia by just four runs. “It was an amazing team effort, and many of us still stay in touch,” she recalls. Another proud memory was her maiden ODI century against Pakistan in the 2009 World Cup, sharing a 262-run partnership with Suzie Bates.
Her transition to coaching also brought great achievements, including a T20 series win over Australia and a World Cup semi-final appearance in India. “Coaching the White Ferns was incredibly rewarding. I also took pride in bringing exciting young talent into the team.”
Haidee credits local clubs and communities as essential to any athlete’s development. “Growing up in South Canterbury, the support felt genuine. That sense of community allows talent to grow in a safe, encouraging space. My advice to young athletes is: always give it your best, stay open to learning, and remember that sport is only one part of who you are.”
Today, Haidee is Deputy Principal at Rangiora High School and coaches the school’s girls’ First XI cricket team. “I love my role and staying involved in the sport. It’s great to still be developing young talent.”

Geraldine is the gateway to some of the best tourist destinations and scenic spots in the middle of the South Island, yet as a town it’s home to so much more. A vibrant food scene, thriving retail offering, picturesque landscapes and neighbouring nature activities, it has been dubbed “Aotearoa’s most-underrated stopover destination” by New Zealand Travel.
According to New Zealand History, the town’s European roots began with the founding of the Raukapuka sheep run in 1853, yet other local sources say the Geraldine district is believed to have been well known to Māori. Moa hunters’ camps with rock paintings can be found nearby at Kakahu and are the closest recorded Māori archaeological sites.
A hub for creatives and community-oriented people, the country town has grown and developed a beloved reputation in South Canterbury. Favoured for its slow country-style way of living, Geraldine is popular to locals, travellers and retirees alike.
Originally Talbot Forest, Geraldine was renamed Fitzgerald in 1857 after Irishman Edward Fitzgerald, the first superintendent of Cantebury. It soon became Geraldine, which was Edward’s Irish clan name.

Nothing feels more like winter than coming in from the cold to the smell of a rich spicy mulled wine.
PREP TIME: 5 mins
COOKING TIME: 20 mins SERVES 6
Ingredients
• 1 orange
• 1 lemon
• 1 lime
• 100g caster sugar
• 3 whole cloves
• 2cm piece of ginger peeled and sliced
• tsp of nutmeg
• 1 vanilla pod
• 1 star anise
• cup black peppercorns
• 750ml good quality Cabernet Sauvignon, a full-bodied Merlot or even a fruity Shiraz
Method:
1. Peel large sections of rind from the orange, lemon and lime.
2. Put the sugar in a large saucepan over a medium heat, add the pieces of peel and squeezed orange juice.
3. Add the cloves, cinnamon stick, ginger, nutmeg and peppercorns. Halve the vanilla pod lengthways and add to the pan, then add enough red wine to cover the sugar. Leave this to simmer until the sugar is completely dissolved, then bring to the boil.
4. Boil gently for about five minutes to infuse the spices until it makes a thick syrup. When the syrup is ready, turn down the heat to low and add the star anise and the remainder of the wine.
5. Leave on low for around five minutes and then pour into heatproof glasses. Serve warm, garnished with orange slices and cinnamon sticks. 1/2 1/4
