In the last 15 - 20 years of the Midland Regional Alliance, and more recently the Central Midlands League, Cromford FC and Wirksworth Town were direct rivals.

At times, this rivalry was evenly contested and extremely fierce. However, amateur football is constantly changing and we must change with it in order to find the best way to become successful.

Therefore, 2019 saw Cromford FC and Wirksworth Town combine forces to become one - Cromford & Wirksworth Town FC.

The Cromford and Wirksworth area, given its size, is doing extremely well regarding the number of players it has available and the number of amateur teams it can support.

We are proud to say that CWTFC, as part of the merger, are able to continue running 2 teams and provide the best standard of football for all of those involved.

We continue to strive to move onward and upwards within the Central Midlands League!

The lads went into the first game of the league campaign, buoyed by 5 wins from 5 in pre season. The opponents were Derby Singh Brothers, who ironically were the opponents in the final game of last season only 12 weeks ago.

Holidays and work commitments hit the squad hard, with Dawson, Macca, Poynton and Hood all away and Moore, Nkumrah and Hughes all unavailable. New signings Walmsley and Bickerton were in the squad, along with B O’Reilly who stepped up from the reserves.

Dynamo started well and really put Singh on the back-foot. Long-range efforts from Peverley, Muir, Griffiths and Goodband all landed straight at the keeper. The deadlock was broken on 25 minutes, as Griffiths picked the ball up and curled a delightful shot into the top corner.

Further pressure followed, as Bodill and Peverley both struck the bar. Then on the stroke of half-time, the home side were awarded a penalty for handball against the Singh centre m-half. Supple stepped-up and his penalty was saved, but the referee ordered a retake for encroachment. Supple went the same way and the keeper guessed correctly again to deny him. It looked as though that would end the half there, but almost straight away the ball was thread through to Withers who crossed for Goodband to make it 2-0 at half time.

The second-half started with Singh coming on strong. Withers had a good chance to make it 3 for us and kill the game, but once again the Singh keeper came to the rescue. Singh reduced the deficit on the hour mark, as a neat passage of play saw their lively forward played in on goal on poke the ball home.

Dynamo were now on the back foot as singh pressed for the equaliser. The defence stood firm and Coxy made a good save to keep them out. Further chances came for Muir and Smith to put the game to bed but finally Bickerton won the ball back down the right and crossed for Withers to finish in the bottom corner. There was still time for another missed penalty, as the Singh winger blazed wide in injury time.

An eventual first game, but 3 points in the bag as we move onto Tuesday night at Gresley Rovers Reserves.

06 AUGUST 2024

Just three days after the opening day of the season, a midweek trip to Gresley Rovers Reserves awaited the lads - a team new to the league having, made the sideways move across from the Nottingham Senior League. Five changes to the starting 11; Burkey deputised for Coxy who was on holiday, in came Dawson, Hughes, Moore and Bickerton for their first starts of the season. Peverley, Gosling and Griffiths dropped to the bench, where they were joined by Jammy and Conor Poynton.

There was an early chance for the away side, as the home defence was pressed into a mistake and it took a covering defender to clear the ball from the goal line. Withers then had a great chance to open the scoring, but the keeper saved when he was through one-on-one. Dynamo thought the deadlock was broken on 25 minutes, as from Trivett’s corner Bodill headed back across to Dawson, who in-turn headed into Withers path for him to finish, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag. Gresley never really troubled Burkey and the half fizzled out as goalless.

Gresley started the second-half strongly, and it needed Burkey to save well down to his left to deny them opening the scoring. Griffiths and Peverley were introduced on the hour-mark for Withers and Moore. Once again, Dynamo were denied by the offside flag as Bodill headed home. Was it going to be one of those nights? The introduction of Griffiths seemed to spark more life into Dynamo and eventually they got their reward. A cross-in from the right met Peverleys head and fell nicely for Goody to smash home! Dynamo had their tails up and doubled their lead almost straight away. Great work by Griffiths to work an opening and he unleashed a shot which stung the home keepers hands and went in off the post. 2-0 and now firmly in control. The final three subs were made; Smith, Poynton and Gosling for Supple, Muir and Trivett.

Gresley didn’t stop there though, and credit to their young team who pushed to the final whistle, but Dawson and skipper Bodill stood firm for a clean sheet.

Onto the weekend and the visit of Cromford & Wirksworth Town.

THE GOOD…

We are delighted to announce that forward Isaac Nkrumah has made a return to action. Isaac suffered a right distal tibial fracture in a midweek game against Pinxton. The referee lost control of the game leaving him on the receiving end of a horror challenge

“I had a rod nailed through my tibia a day later secured by 2 screws in the ankle and 2 just below the knee” said Isaac “The recovery has been really tough I spent the first 2 months in a lot of pain, barely able to bare any weight. Month 3 I started physio and eventually got off crutches. It took until month 5 before i could just about start running again and kicking a football.”

After 6 months, Isaac joined back up with the squad for pre-seasons “I struggled with knee pain caused by one of the screws just below my knee. However I’ve had a second operation to have it removed. Hopefully that’s the last thing holding me back from getting back to my best ”

“Now I’m looking to fully push myself on and off the pitch Working on getting my strength back in the gym as well as my sharpness on the pitch, I’m really looking forward to the season and super excited to come on have an impact in the team in the next few weeks ”

…& THE BAD

The club would like to send its best wishes to winger, Charlie Tovell, who has been ruled out of action for the foreseeable future.

Charlie suffered a torn ACL whilst playing in the local Melbourne 6-a-Side League. His surgery is scheduled for the 12th September, with the aim to be back playing in the 2025/26 season. We wish Charlie all the best with his surgery and recovery, and look forward to his return

OUR HISTORY

Melbourne Dynamo FC First Team currently play in the Abacus Lightning Central Midlands Football League. We are a 3-star FA Accredited Club, with our junior section consisting of 26 male teams and 7 female teams. We also have a Soccer Schools programme for our youngest future stars and Walking Football for our over-55s. Our Home ground is the Melbourne Sporting Partnership where we provide our players, supporters & sponsors with incredible facilities.

Located on the border of three counties, Melbourne Dynamo FC traces its roots back to 1950. Shortly after World War II, an Eastern European club side toured the UK, playing a series of friendly matches against professional and amateur outfits across the country. That club was FC Dynamo Moscow. The then known, Melbourne FC, were just one of the clubs that pitted their wits against FC Dynamo Moscow. A year or so later, so folklore would have it, Melbourne FC became Melbourne Dynamo FC, and the all blue strip was adopted. In 2019, with the growth of women’s football, Melbourne Dynamo FC formed a women’s team - Melbourne Wildcats - providing football for ladies of all ages in the local area.

In recent years, the club has gone from strength-to-strength both on and off the pitch. The men’s First Team became League Champions in 2023, seeing them promoted to the Central Midlands Alliance League Premier Division South, the clubs highest ever ranking. A clear pathway to senior football has also been established in the junior sections, seeing record numbers of teams and members at the club. Melbourne Dynamo now seeks to implement its stadium development plans to allow progression up the football pyramid.
