MELBOURNE DYNAMO

2 6 MATCH REPORTS

WIRKSWORTH IVANHOE

SATURDAY 23RD MARCH 2024 | 15:00

For the first time this season, Dynamo went head-to-head with Wirksworth Ivanhoe, an old foe from the Midlands Regional Alliance days. It was good to see some familiar faces in their ranks. Like ourselves, Ivanhoe have been going well this season and look nailed-on for a top 6 finish.

Out of the side was Coxy, Macca, Jammy, Isaac G, as well as long term absentees Tovell and Nkumrah. Back in the squad, from the defeat at Cromford, was Bennett and Poynton.

Kicking against the strong wind first half, the lads started poorly and found themselves 2-down within 5 minutes Failed chances to clear and slack marking allowed the opposing right-winger to finish well, twice, and give the away side the foothold in the game. Despite the early setback, the home side seemed to be heading into half-time without any further damage. How wrong could we be? More slack defending and poor marking allowed Ivanhoe to grab 2 more goals to go in 4-0 at half-time. The lads looked shell-shocked, could they respond in the second-half?

An early chance nearly reduced the deficit, but from our corner Ivanhoe broke clear and, despite having opportunities to clear, it was 5-0. Leading goalscorer Tyler Withers pulled one back with his 14th of the season and now we looked to push-on with the wind on our backs. Unfortunately we couldn’t, as unbelievably we gave another gift to the away side, albeit a great finish. Possession was lost in the middle of the park and clinically dispatched by the opposing forward. The last kick of the game saw us make it 6-2, as Jake Peverley fired a great freekick into the roof of the net.

All-in-all, an awful day and awful performance, nowhere near the standards we expect. Hoping it’s a one-off, only time will tell. On to Bakewell Town away next week.

After back-to-back defeats, Dynamo faced an in-form Bakewell Town who were 5 unbeaten, including a 3-1 win over league-leaders Pinxton. With Bakewell’s ground unfit, the game was switched to Cockshut Lane to get the game played. Back came Coxy in between the sticks, Jammy, Isaac, Simo, Pev and new signing Jack Griffiths made up the bench.

The game started well, and Dynamo were in front inside 4 minutes. Goody found Macca in the middle of the park, who in-turn fed Lewis to power down the right wing. His cross found Tyler in the middle, who’s effort was saved by the Bakewell keeper only for Muir to fire in the rebound. A great start after last week’s horror show. The visitors showed glimpses of why they hadn’t lost for a while, but the better chances came and went to the home side. Right on halftime Bakewell should have had a stone-wall penalty, but the referee somehow waved away the appeals.

Into the second-half and Jammy, Isaac and Jack Griffiths were all introduced, and new signing Griffiths made an instant impact. His low shot found the bottom corner to double the advantage. That cushion now made life easier for the home team and, despite a few promising attacks, the defence stood firm to record what would be an 11th clean sheet of the season. Tyler put the icing on the cake as he finished superbly from a tight angle for his 15th of the season and a 3-0 scoreline, which completed a league double over Bakewell.

The lads are back on track and now face Derby Singh Brothers next.

RESSIES CUP FINAL (TAKE TWO…)

Last Thursday, the Reserves, along with a large following of supporters, travelled to Long Eaton United in the hope of bringing home some silverwear back to Cockshut Lane.

Both teams arrived early to get preparations underway, with Wirksworth Ivanhoe hiring a coach to bring their team and supporters down on the long journey.

With showers of rain throughout the day, no indication had been given to either club that there was any doubt that the game wouldn’t go ahead.

30 minutes before kick-off, despite the officials stating the game was good to proceed, Long Eaton United pulled rank and decided to cancel the game at the eleventh hour, to protect their pitch (even though they have no game scheduled for two weeks).

A hugely disappointing night, both for the Ressies and the fans who made the journey, who seemed to be last on the minds of those making the decisions. We now sit and wait for the rescheduled date.
