BAKEWELL TOWN

SATURDAY 24TH FEBRUARY 2024 | 14:00

After back-to-back league wins, Dynamo hosted a Bakewell Town side for the first time in their long history. There were four changes to the starting 11 from the win over Linby; Jake Laban came in for Coxy who was working away and Tovell, Moore and Hughes replaced Goodband, Supple and Simpson who all took their place on the bench.

In front of a healthy three-figure crowd, Dynamo started brightly and were unlucky not to take the lead as, Tovell cut-in from the left and saw his shot hit the inside of the post and agonisingly run and across the goal line, out for goal kick.

It didn’t take long for the breakthrough after this, when Withers finished well for his 12th of the season. This sparked a 10-minute spell which would put the game to bed. 4 minutes later Withers crossed for Smith to head-in superbly as he ran away from goal.

It was 3, five minutes later, as Goslings ball sent Tovell through to finish well under the advancing keeper.

The home side were now firmly in control, and Bakewell offered very little in terms of efforts on Laban’s goal. The lads went in at the break 3 goals to the good. With the points in the bag, the message at half-time was to keep it tight and don’t make any silly mistakes.

On the hour mark, Withers broke free and put the ball on a plate for Tovell to double his tally for the game, making it 4-0. All five subs were introduced to keep the mentality of a squad game firmly at the forefront of the players minds. The defence stood firm to collect their 8th clean sheet of the season and the result meant Dynamo were up to 2nd in the league and the time of writing.

THE NICK HUMPHREYS STAND

Please take your seat…

… is what we can now say, thanks to the new Nick Humphreys stand!

Last month, we took delivery of the latest stadium development here, at Cockshut Lane. This statement piece, supplied by EliteStands , sits proudly on the south side of First Team pitch, with spectacular views over Cockshut Lane and, in beyond that, our beautiful home of Melbourne.

The 50-seater stand puts us one-step closer to our goal of climbing up the National League pyramid. Currently in Step 7, we cannot progress to Step 6 and beyond without this stand, amongst a few other things (watch this space).

Chairman, Conor Raynor, was proud to finally see the clubs vision come to light. “Thestrategyattheclubistoinvestheavilyinourcoachesandfacilities, toattractthebestplayersandalsoretainourbestplayers.Italsogives ourJuniorDynamossomethingtoaspireto, andhopefullywestarttosee morespectatorsatCockshutLane!

Nick has had a long history with Melbourne Dynamo, which first began with coaching the under-7s with club legend, Don Miller, when his son Henry was in the team. Henry, now 17, has recently returned to Melbourne Dynamo, and now features consistently in the Reserve Team.

“Ilovefootball”said Nick. “Iwantedtohelpout.I’vebeenabletodothis throughpartpersonalandpartcharitablefunds.”

Nick’s charitable foundation prefers to make donations to local causes, and had in the past paid for a variety of things, including a £13,000 specialist wheelchair for a young person in North-West Leicestershire.

One incredible fundraising evening raised a huge £75,000 when Nick held a party in his back garden, which featured Heather Small from the M People as a headline act! This money paid for a new kitchen and conservatory at the Rainbow’s Childrens Hospice in Loughborough.

Nick Humphreys has been a local estate agent in the area for many years, and three years ago sold the majority of the company to a PLC, retaining a small office in the area, serving Melbourne, South Derbyshire and North West Leicestershire with all types of residential sales and lettings.

TODAY’S OPPONENTS

Graham Street Prims traces its roots back to 1904, emerging from a primitive Methodist Church, hence adopting the moniker "Prims." Situated adjacent to Osmaston Road in Derby, Graham Street holds historical significance, closely neighbored by the Baseball Ground, once the esteemed home of Derby County F.C. until their relocation to Pride Park.

Disbanded in 1914 due to the onset of World War I, the Prims boasted remarkable talent in the decade prior, including notable figures like the Keetley brothers and Jimmy Bagshaw, who later graced the fields of Notts County and even represented England.

Resurrected in 1953, the Prims enjoyed a fruitful period marked by numerous accolades, particularly in the Central Alliance, East Midlands League, and Derbyshire Senior League. The pinnacle of their success spanned from 1971 to 1981, amassing an impressive fifteen major honors, highlighted by seven Derbyshire Cup triumphs and eight league championships.

Facing dissolution once more in 1991, the Prims rallied back in 1995. Despite adversity, including sustained vandalism at the Railway Ground in Longbridge Lane and subsequent relegation due to inadequate floodlights, the club persevered.

With unwavering determination, the committee engaged in fruitful discussions with Borrowash Victoria FC officials at the Asterdale Sports and Social Club, securing a promising opportunity at Borrowash Road, Spondon. Negotiations with The Heritage Pub Company, landowners, bore fruit, offering a lease and a pitch for the Prims' revival.

Guided by the Central Midlands League, led by Mr. Frank Harwood, the club embarked on renovations at their new home. The installation of new post and rails and improved pitch drainage signaled a fresh start.

Following a phase of relative success and stability in the East Midlands Counties Football League, the post-COVID era brought tougher times for Prims. Their solitary season in the UCL came to an end when the club appealed against a proposed lateral move to the Midland Football League, ultimately resulting in a voluntary relegation to the Central Midlands League, now known as the CMA, at the beginning of the 22/23 season.
