TEE IT UP Happy New Year from the Golf Shop Professional Staff! I want to first thank everyone for a great 2023 golf year. It was very busy with normal day-to-day play and tournament rounds. I hope everyone had a successful golf season and took their golf game to new heights! We have finalized the 2024 golf calendar and will be releasing it soon. We have a good mix of competitive and social events for everyone to enjoy. Along with tournaments, we look to add several men’s and ladies’ clinics to the calendar for 2024. Reminder that for the months of January and February, we will have 11:00am shotgun starts daily and tee times starting at 3:10pm for nine-hole play. Everyone must call the golf shop to sign up for a starting hole in the shotguns, and daily group play will not be saved by the golf shop. I also want to stress pace of play—not only with these shotgun starts, but on a daily basis. Please remember to play ready golf and keep up with the group in front of you. Four hours and ten minutes is the recommended max amount of time it should take for a foursome to play 18 holes of golf. Now that cold weather is setting in for the next few months, remember that the golf simulator is a great option to stay on top of your game. Hit balls on a driving range or play an 18-hole round of golf. The golf shop’s professional staff is also available for lessons on the simulator if it is too cold to be outside on the driving range. Finally, just another friendly reminder when playing during the winter months: we do have a local rule that players are allowed to lift, clean, and place their golf ball when on their own fairway. Thank you! Luke Lovell, PGA Director of Golf

COURTSIDE NEWS The year is wrapping up, and it’s time to recap. Other than the typical events of summer camps and junior tournaments, there were a lot of new and exciting things at the Country Club of Asheville tennis facility. For the first time in a few years, CCA hosted the McConnell Ladies Weekend. We also had the Ladies Club Championship, which was the first time in a while. The adult program continues to grow more and more each season, and we plan on offering more fun events for our adult tennis and pickleball players. Now that winter is here, the outdoor clay courts have officially closed. I will do my best to have the courts playable on nice days, but the freezing and thawing turns the clay into mud. With the outdoor courts closed and more people playing tennis and pickleball, it is even more important that people reserve courts and sign up for clinics before attending and using the facility. January 13 and 14th are the next open pickleball tournaments to look forward to if you are a competitive pickleball player. Porters Neck Country Club in Wilmington will be hosting the next McConnell Ladies Tennis Weekend June 28th and 29th. This is a great opportunity to see Porters Neck if you haven’t already, and have a weekend full of tennis! The CCA website has a new online shop where you can find apparel with the CCA logo! We are now carrying Lululemon clothing. We also have new winter apparel in the tennis shop... come down and take a look at the selection!

FITNESS

Physical Therapy at CCA It is that time of year again—New Year’s resolutions. Gyms are packed, promises are made, and goals are set. This time is followed closely by “Ditch New Year’s Resolution Day” and “Quitter’s Day.” In fact, over half of New Year’s resolutions do not make it more than 3 months! Why do most people fail? Are their goals too lofty or too hard, or do they just lose interest? Personal experience tells me it is all of the above. Fitness and mental health make up the two most popular New Years Resolutions (NYR), with finances coming in third. All of these are not easy, and in essence, that’s the point. If your NYR was to have a beer five days a week, I think the stats would be higher. With the dawning of a new year, we all get excited for the possibility of a fresh start on our goals, but we drastically overestimate our resolve for the changes that we dream of making. As a Health and Wellness coach and Physical Therapist, I have witnessed, heard, and personally used all of the excuses you could think of. Most of them are due to one thing: lack of a “why.” The “why” is what you are making the change for. Now, most people will say they’re doing it for some reason, but is that reason meaningful? A reason for a grandparent to get healthier may be a grandkid, so they can be able to play with them or get on the ground with them. It doesn’t have to be deep, but it has to have meaning. After a goal with a why comes the process/map to make the goal a reality. This can be developed alone, but is almost always better developed with coaches. For most, getting a coach/professional to help with mental health and finances is a no-brainer, but with fitness, everybody feels like they can do it alone. Having a coach, therapist, or trainer is the first step in understanding where you are starting and in developing a plan and process to get you to where you want to finish. The best way to crush your goals, and my personal recommendation, is to have a team. This could be a few visits with a physical therapist to understand your body, then 2-3 weeks/months with a personal trainer to work on specific pieces. Then, a repeat visit with the physical therapist to assess any changes or progressions needed—then repeat. Let me help you start and crush your New Years Resolutions with a better understanding of your body and mindset. Thanks, Walt

‘Why I Love Doing Yoga at CCA!’ Christmas ’23, marks 3 years of attending Paula’s Tuesday and Thursday yoga classes. Before walking into her class, I was a complete yoga novice. Since the beginning of my yoga journey, Paula's yoga classes have always been warm and inviting…open to both beginners and advanced yoga practitioners alike. Over the last few years, I have found my inner and outer strengths- core, mental, and physical, and my overall wellbeing has improved noticeably. I have truly enjoyed her creative approach using music, sound bowls, and readings. Sometimes, I feel like she is a mind reader, in that she mixes up the classes and muscle groups each session in a fun and inspiring way, as if speaking to my particular muscle and mental needs. She is the best kept secret in Asheville. Namaste - Pete Pinholster

Yoga classes continue with Paula throughout the Winter! Mat Classes on Tuesday & Thursday @ 8:30AM Chair Classes on Tuesday & Thursday @ 9:45AM Any questions can be emailed to phanke@ccofasheville.com

As someone who has done yoga off and on for over a decade, I find Paula’s yoga class one of my all-time favorites. I am not able to attend every session; however, when I am able, I always find so much value in her class. As a mother of three young boys, my focus is always stretched and pulled in a million different directions. This class gives me an hour just for myself to gain my center and strength within and out. I always leave her class feeling renewed, refreshed with a new fire, and strong to push through the week. I feel so fortunate to have her at our club. - Jen Pinholster THE HICKORY STICK
