Dalton Rich, PGA Director of Golf

There can be no doubt, autumn in Eastern North Carolina is upon us. The days are becoming shorter and the mornings a bit more crisp and cool. What a great time for a round of golf, without the summertime heat and pesky mosquitos.
We might not have insects and heat to contend with, but we do have debris This time of year, the maintenance crew shifts our focus from cutting grass to managing leaves and pine straw The pinecone in the Brook Valley logo is no accident; we have those in abundance as well We still cut all the grass once a week and the greens daily, but we certainly do not get the same volume of clippings we might see in warmer months.
Speaking of greens, they are slower right now, and that is a good thing We are preparing them for that first frost, when they mostly quit growing If they go into that first frost healthy, they will come out of dormancy in the spring in much better condition The good news is, we also have green covers to further ensure our greens' viability through the winter Before purchasing covers, we would keep our greens' height of cut set at 0 150 of an inch through the winter The greens were slower at that height of cut than they are now With covers, we are now able to keep them cut lower at 0.120 of an inch, which keeps them a bit quicker than years past. For reference, in the summer, we cut greens at .100 of an inch.
The other factors affecting green speed are topdressing with sand and applications of plant growth regulator (or PGR) Both of these practices are reduced in the fall In the interest of turf density and overall health, we drastically reduce the amount of PGR we apply Lower temperatures also slow the growth of the turf naturally, so less PGR is needed We still apply sand through the fall, but again, with reduced growth, less sand is required to keep the putting surface smooth You will also see us rolling greens more in the fall and winter, especially when we begin to cut less and less grass.
We will not be able to renovate as many bunkers as we had hoped this year, but we will be adding sand to several of them. Our irrigation system is showing its age We will be addressing some of the challenges we face with irrigation heads and control boxes over the coming months
Remember to keep your home lawn hydrated even if the temperatures are cooler. You also do not want your lawn wet and spongy. Watering once every week or two in the fall and winter is likely sufficient. If we get consistent rain, watering may not be necessary at all. You have the potential for turf damage if we are without significant precipitation for 2 to 3 weeks, and the temperature drops below freezing. This is also a good time to winterize your lawn equipment Gas left in a carburetor all winter can be problematic in the spring
As always, we hope you have a great round every time you play You can play golf anywhere; we are delighted you call Brook Valley your home course We will do our best every day to give you the best experience possible
Until next time, I’ll see you on the course.
Sincerely,
Buckley Brockmann Golf Course Superintendent/General Manager

CHICKEN FRIDAY PIZZA & WING NIGHT THANKSGIVING TO-GO

BY PATRICK BUDNIEWSKI, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT HOLSTON

2.In a large mixing bowl, cream together sugars and butter.

4.In a separate bowl, sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, and baking soda

BRUNCH WITH SANTA
BIRTHDAY NIGHT

NEW YEARS EVE PARTY
BY JOHN HANEK, EXECUTIVE CHEF AT THE WATERS EDGE COUNTRY CLUB
“I have experimented with the original Oatmeal Cookie recipes using many different ingredients. This combination was my favorite, and it quickly became a necessity on my hiking adventures.” - John Hanek
Ingredients:
2 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
2 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
1/2 cup granulated sugar
4 large eggs*
2 tablespoons pure vanilla extract
1 tablespoon molasses
Directions:
3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
3 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon salt
6 cups old-fashioned oats
2 cups dried blueberries
1 cup white chocolate chips

1 Using a hand mixer or a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the softened butter and both sugars together on medium speed until smooth, about 2 minutes Add the eggs and mix on high until combined, about 1 minute Scrape down the sides and bottom of the bowl as needed Add the vanilla and molasses and mix on high until combined Set aside
2 In a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt together Add to the wet ingredients and mix on low until combined Beat in the oats, dry blueberries, and white chocolate chips on low speed Dough will be thick, yet very sticky Chill the dough for 30-60 minutes in the refrigerator (do the full hour if you’re afraid of the cookies spreading too much) If chilling for longer (up to 2 days), allow to sit at room temperature for at least 30 minutes before rolling and baking
3 Preheat oven to 350°F (177°C) Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats Set aside
4.Roll balls of dough (about 2 tablespoons of dough per cookie) and place 2 inches apart on the baking sheets. I recommend using a cookie scoop since the dough can be sticky Bake for 12-14 minutes until lightly browned on the sides The centers will look very soft and underbaked Remove from the oven and let cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely. The cookies will continue to “set” on the baking sheet during this time
