TURF TALK
We have had a nice spring on the golf course. It seems like we have received rain when we needed it and have had enough sunshine and warmth to get the grass green. Currently, we are only needing to cut fairways and tee boxes once a week. The greens are getting cut daily and look very healthy.
Speaking of the greens, we recently had a very successful aeration. Thank you for sacrificing a day of golf for the health of our course. We did not waste the time given. While the course was closed for two days, we aerated all 22 greens with ¼” coring tines. Monday, we focused on greens, Tuesday we aerated the green surrounds, where mowers turn and rollers change direction. This practice should help the greens and surrounding area to grow new roots, relieve compaction, promote exchange of gas, and ultimately grow more vigorously over the next few months.
Water is another component of healthy turf. Thankfully, we were recently able to ensure a steady delivery of water to the needed areas on the course Our pump station was in need of some major repairs and fortunately that work was completed in the month of April Now we should be set up for a great summer!
The greens are healing up nicely from aeration Greens speeds should improve as we continue to verticut, topdress with sand, and cut and roll. We will be back to summer speeds in no time!
Until next time, I’ll see you on the course.
