MENTAL HEALTH AND HAPPINESS - STRATEGIES FOR OLDER ADULTS

Engage in an interactive workshop to learn about ways to support our mental health and wellbeing as we age. Learn about how to access mental health support in our community. Facilitated by Emily Brosius, LCSW, Director of Community Services with Beach Cities Health District.

SELF-DEFENSE FOR SENIORS

Join us for a free introductory workshop to learn self-defense techniques for seniors. Facilitated by Elite Training Center, a martial arts studio focusing on self-defense and fitness in Redondo Beach. Instructors will teach participants basic self-defense techniques that older adults can use in real-life situations and answer specific questions about protecting yourself and those around you. Brought to you by Manhattan Beach Older Adult Program and Beach Cities Health District.

YOGA FOR BETTER POSTURE AND BALANCE BY TERI

Have you developed a few aches and pains in the neck and the back? Do you suffer from "text" or "tech" neck from hunching over your devices? In this class, you'll become aware of your posture and strengthen your back and abdominal core to stand tall and feel more spacious in your body. Do you feel a bit unstable, not sure of your balance? Come to class and strengthen muscles of the hips, legs and feet. You'll also develop flexibility, breath awareness, and tension release in this journey towards better posture and balance. EDEN

Stretch, strengthen, and soothe. A great class for those who are new to yoga and need to take it easy. Individual modifications are given. Option to use a chair is available. Bring a mat and beach towel.

Build strength, increase flexibility, and improve balance with this beginning yoga flow-style practice. Poses are done on the mat and standing, and individual modifications are provided. This class is open to all levels; no prerequisite required. Bring a mat and beach towel.

BASIC TECHNIQUES OF DRAWING

Learn the basic drawing techniques using drawing and colored pencils, charcoal and blending tools. Bring a 9 x 12 inch drawing pad, #2 pencil, and a pink eraser to the first class.

ARTHRITIS FOUNDATION

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise program was designed to help people with arthritis maintain joint flexibility, muscle strength and reduce the pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. Taught by an Arthritis Foundation certified instructor who receives detailed and ongoing training to work with people with arthritis. Instructor: Victoria Mendez. No class 10/5.

The mission of Blankets of Love: to cover babies with warmth, love, and blessings. Founded in love and hope for every newborn, Blankets of Love South Bay is working with Good+Foundation of LA to donate a handmade blanket to wrap each newborn as they leave the hospital.

AGILITY, BALANCE, AND COORDINATION

Agility is the ability to change the direction of the body in an efficient and effective manner, requiring a combination of balance and coordination. This class will be using common dumbbell weights, and resistance bands to perform fun coordination exercises that utilize eye-hand coordination working towards greater stationary and moving body balance.

MINDFULNESS

Feeling stressed, overwhelmed? Would you like to have greater focus, a feeling of relaxed awareness, relief from the experience of fight or flight? Scientific evidence shows Mindfulness can help with these life challenges. Mindfulness is a training of our attention to remain in the present moment. You can sit in a chair, cushion, or on the floor. Beach Cities Health District, Timilie Lasq will be our new facilitator.

Tai Chi at Joslyn Center is progressing wonderfully! We offer this intermediate Simplified 24 Forms Yang Tai Chi class on Mondays, ongoing, at 9:30am. You must be able to perform the first 8 moves of this form, on your own, in order to participate in this class.This class is not for beginners. Coloring is therapeutic, fun, and very relaxing. Coloring books are available in the OASIS Room. You are welcome to take a page(s) and work on it but please leave the books in OASIS. Pens and pencils are available in the Older Adult Program office. Get your creativity going!

CENTER FOR HEALTH CARE RIGHTS

The HICAP Volunteer Counselor is back here in Manhattan Beach to help you with your questions. The state-registered Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) volunteer counselors are part of the non-profit Center for Health Care Rights, and provide unbiased information, counseling, and assistance on Medicare (Parts A & B), Medicare Prevention Services, long-term care and much more.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide is the nation's largest volunteer-based tax preparation service. In communities across the country, we help people with low to moderate income become more financially resillient.

In addition to tax preparers, whom the program will train, Tax-Aide needs people who can provide technical and communications assistance, interpreters, and program leaders.

Our volunteers are current and former CPAs, lawyers, engineers, and others, and they range from retirees to university students. All levels and types of experience are welcome.

Watch a breathtaking documentary film followed by a discussion with presenter Rick Farrell. The Pacific Undersea War "Sea of Japan Campaign" was the last great submarine battle of WWII. Sea of Japan Nine submarines skillfully navigated through the thousands of Japanese mines guarding the Japanese homeland. In 15 days they sank 46 ships in the Sea of Japan. This is the actual combat footage taken aboard the USS Spadefish commanded by William J. Germershausen.

Penny

Bob Perkins

Flash in the crosswalk: the cracked asphalt nested a new penny. “Find a penny pick it up, all day long you’ll have good luck.” I looked both ways and went back for it.

It was radiant, so copper in my hand in the morning sun, Honest Abe beaming at me as though I had walked the legendary four miles to return four cents to its rightful owner.

I thought of when a penny bought me a hard candy, a ball of cinnamon or butterscotch, of how a dime once meant a loaf of bread and a dollar a day’s work, of 1943 when we couldn’t afford copper and made steel pennies, and of the penny bins in supermarkets because now we won’t take less than silver in our pockets.

Wealth.

How much is luck? How much is money? How much do I need?

I looked around. The day was bright as pennies, bright as the playground shouts from the grammar school, as the primroses edging the walk.

I felt lucky. I realized nothing in that rhyme says you have to keep the penny.

I left it on the sidewalk where some kid idling home from school, studying the primroses and careful not to step on a crack, might catch the shine. I went home lucky. "Penny" was first

LONG-TERM OUTDOOR DINING PROGRAM

The City of Manhattan Beach is hosting a workshop for community members to engage in the process of developing the Long-Term Outdoor Dining Program. An overview of the project, schedule, and process will be provided by the team. Following a presentation, community members will have the opportunity to engage in a series of interactive exercises to share ideas, feedback, and ask questions about the project.

For community members who will not be able to attend the community workshop, there will be another opportunity to learn about the program development and provide your feedback at the 51st Annual Manhattan Beach Hometown Fair on October 7-8, 2023 from 10 am – 6 pm at Live Oak Park (1901 N. Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach, CA).

The Fair is located on Valley Drive between 15th and 21st Streets in Manhattan Beach, CA. The street is closed down during fair weekend. The fair is also held at the Joslyn Community Center, 1601 North Valley Drive.

Coffee and donuts will be for sale in the JCC/Ocean Banquet Hall starting on Friday 3:00pm-5:00pm for vendors. Saturday and Sunday it will be open 8:00am-4:00pm to the public. Free BINGO will be held in the JCC/OASIS room 1:00pm-3:00pm on Saturday only.
