GENERAL NOTES • The accidentals written in the score apply through the whole measure in which they are written, unless diversely indicated.

• The vibraphone must be played with the motor turned off, and with its fans opened to at least 2/3 of their full aperture.

• The low bell plate should be at least 50% larger than the high bell plate; for instance, if the high bell plate is 40x30cm, the low bell plate should be at minimum 60x45cm. It is preferred that both plates are made out of bronze, or at least the high bell plate.

• La lastra metallica grave deve essere almeno 50% più grande rispetto alla lastra acuta; ad esempio, se la lastra acuta è grande 40x30cm, quella grave dovrà avere almeno 60x45cm. È preferibile che le due lastre siano di bronzo; se questo non fosse possibile, che almeno lo sia la lastra acuta.

• In order to allow the performer to strike the bell plates without having to step backwards, each one of these must be mounted on a separate stand, placing them close to the vibraphone and slightly rotated outwards,. The low bell plate must be placed to the performer's left and the high bell plate to the right:

• Per permettere all'esecutore di percuotere le lastre senza aver bisogno di spostarsi all'indietro, queste verranno montate ognuna su un supporto differente, ponendole vicino al vibrafono leggermente girate verso l'esterno (vedi fig.). La lastra grave deve essere messa a sinistra dell'esecutore, e la lastra acuta alla sua destra:

• Both the vibraphone and the bell plates must be played using vibraphone mallets of medium hardness. Only where specified in the score, the large bell plate must be struck using a large bass drum beater with a soft head. In order to simplify the beater's use, it is adviced to hang it at the low bell plates' stand, leaving it suspended.

• Sia il vibrafono che le lastre devono essere suonate utilizzando bacchette da vibrafono di durezza media. Soltanto dove specificato sullo spartito, la lastra grave deve essere percossa utilizzando un battente da grancassa di feltro morbido. Per facilitarne l'uso, si consiglia di appendere il battente al supporto della lastra grave, lasciandolo sospeso.

• The fermatas and breath signs that are used throughout the piece are conceived as occasions for allowing the instruments to resonate ad libitum. After these momentary suspensions, the performer must play strictly a tempo.

• The performer should adhere to the dynamics indicated throughout the composition, striving to carefully render the proportion between the different dynamic layers.

• L'esecutore deve osservare le dinamiche scritte, rispettando la relazione tra i diversi gradi d'intensità.

• In order to facilitate the playing ot the tremolos on the bell plates, it is adviced to play them placing laterally the mallets of one hand each on a different side of the plate.

• Per facilitare l'esecuzione dei tremoli sulle lastre, si consiglia di realizzarli posizionando lateralmente le bacchette di una mano ognuna sui lati opposti della lastra.

Le corone e i respiri che sono utilizzati nel brano sono concepiti come occasioni per mantenere le risonanze degli strumenti. Dopo queste sospensioni momentanee, l'esecutore prosegue suonando a tempo.

NOTES ON THE USE OF THE BELL PLATES ● The staff lines are used as indicators of the physical point where the surface of the bell plates has to be struck or damped. For example:

The plate has to be struck just barely under its uppermost edge.

● The full duration of the bell plates' sound is notated precisely when it is followed by its damping, indicated by the cross-shaped note:

Extended techniques

“Tecniche estese”

Strike the plate at any given point of its edge, with the shaft of the mallet.

Percuotere la lastra su un punto qualsiasi del suo bordo, con il manico della bacchetta.

Action divided in three phases: 1. Squeeze the bell plate with the palm of the hands.

2. Slide the hands downwards, producing an intense screech.

3. Continue beyond the plate, allowing it to vibrate.

Azione articolata in tre fasi: 1. Premere la lastra con il palmo delle mani.

2. Strisciare le mani in senso discendente, producendo un forte stridio.

3. Proseguire oltre la lastra, lasciandola vibrare.

Strike the plate and damp it laterally with the tip of the fingers (grabbing it strongly but swiftly) so that the resonance is partially stopped, allowing the higher armonics to resonate.

Percuotere la lastra e fermarla lateralmente con la punta delle dita (afferrandola con forza ma velocemente) per stoppare parzialmente la risonanza, lasciando gli armonici superiori.
