EDITOR’S CORNER In most every high school class there was someone – usually a young woman — who did everything: served on the student government, edited the school paper, cheered on the pep squad, made the honor roll and was elected homecoming queen. Think of Patty Simcox, the annoyingly perky and in-charge-of-everything Miss Goody Two Shoes, from the movie “Grease.”

I am Patty Simcox. Okay, I’m not really Patty Simcox. I was never a cheerleader. And I wasn’t the homecoming queen. Other than that, I might as well have been the Patty Simcox of my class.

Yikes. Looking back, sometimes I can barely stand myself. I wish I could say I grew out of it, but guess who organized two of the three class reunions we’ve had since graduation? I’d like to claim that I was roped into it, especially when I see what I believe to be me parodied in reunion movies like “Grosse Point Blank” as the overenthusiastic woman greeting former classmates who, despite their supposed disdain for people who actually liked high school enough to attend a reunion, have shown up anyway. Alas, I volunteered for the reunion coordinator job...and I confess that I had a great time with it. Plus ça change and all that.

And now, I get paid – paid, can you believe it? – to publicize my beloved alma mater and all things alumni. Not that I’m gloating. I’m just grateful. And possibly still annoying, though much less perky.

My point, mostly to my fellow alumni, is this: We were here at Maryknoll School. That matters. Maybe to varying degrees depending on your experience, but it still matters – because each one of us played our own part in the Maryknoll story. And there’s nothing wrong with being glad about that, especially when we’re in the midst of a milestone anniversary.

So in this 75th year of Maryknoll School in Hawaii…Attend a class reunion. Go to an all-alumni event. Visit campus. Thank a teacher.

Coming to terms with crisis in the Church

ew events since Vatican II have aroused more interest, ire, and controversy as the recent scandal involving the alleged sexual abuse of minors by priests and the subsequent cover up of the alleged misconduct by church officials. The events have also given rise to countless writers riding their favorite hobbyhorses to express their views on priestly celibacy, the ordination of women, homosexuality in the clergy, and the hierarchical structure of the church itself. Each of these topics must be addressed in time, but, for now, we must come to terms with our own feelings and our own beliefs as we go forward.

Recognizing this need, Fr. Marc Alexander, pastor of the Manoa-Punahou Catholic Community, and Maryknoll graduate Fr. Gary Secor ’69 recently served as resources for a community gathering of parish members and others interested in discussing the current situation.

An able facilitator from the parish asked the group to express in a word or two their initial feelings related to the widespread misconduct. Responses ranged from “anger,” “disappointment,” and “betrayal,” to “shock,” “hurt,” and “disgust.”

My first response was “embarrassment.” Like most contemporary American Catholics, I have had my personal quarrels with the church at times, but this was the first time that I was truly embarrassed by my church. I am embarrassed, not only by the deplorable conduct of some priests, but also by the manner in which church officials often neglected their responsibility to their people in favor of protecting those responsible for the regrettable behavior.

I’ve thought a great deal about this since. I’ve been embarrassed before. I was embarrassed by the events surrounding Watergate, the unnecessary deception of a world leader at a time when forthrightness was called for. More recently, I was embarrassed by the results of the last national election, which pointed sharply to a flawed and antiquated system for selecting one of the key figures of the free world. But just these two illustrations have helped me to come to grips with the present crisis in the church.

In both cases, much has been done both nationally and locally to place greater checks and accountability on our officials to assure that neither will be repeated. Recent legislation across the nation related to election reform alone will unquestionably result in a greater purity of our election process. If the Dallas meeting of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is any indication, then a similar process of reform has already begun. Under the direction of Bishop Wilton Gregory and leaders like our own Bishop Francis DiLorenzo, the Conference adopted a document entitled “Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People.” In brief, the documents states: “For even a single act of sexual abuse of a minor – past, present or future – the offending priest or deacon will not remain in ministry and will not receive a future assignment.”

Commenting on the charter, which must be ratified in Rome, Bishop Gregory said that it “ensures that young people are protected, that victims are truly listened to and assisted, that all priests are trustworthy and that all bishops act responsibly.”

Additionally, the charter calls for the creation of a new Office for Child and Youth Protection to assist and evaluate dioceses in their implementation of the charter, and the appointment of a National Review Board headed by Oklahoma Governor Frank Keating to oversee the national office and review its annual report prior to publication. The landmark charter also sets rules for reporting allegations of sexual abuse to civil authorities, opposes secrecy in legal settlements, calls for background checks of all church workers and screening procedures for priesthood candidates, and requires every diocese to create “safe environment” programs to educate children, parents and church personnel in sex abuse prevention and detection.

The charter, while not fully addressing the long-lasting pain, emotional damage, and confusion of the victims and their families, is an important step toward a healing process and a restoration of trust in our church leaders. Hopefully, it also signals a new era in which major issues within the American Catholic Church will be debated openly with eyes firmly fixed on the creation of a stronger, more united congregation of the faithful.

American History Comes Alive for 8th Graders

n April, 210 students experienced learning history in diverse and imaginative ways. Our own 8th graders and those from Hawaii Baptist Academy met at Hoomaluhia Botanical Park in Kaneohe for a culminating activity for their study of the Civil War. Students from Maryknoll and Hawaii Baptist Academy were partnered and assigned to a Union or Confederate camp, with each camp flying its own specially designed banner.

Students were assigned to five different learning stations in both camps. Professional re-enactors drilled students on the rudiments of marching. “Medics” familiarized students with the conditions of Civil War medicine and the treatment of wounded soldiers on the battlefield.

Students probed dummies for Minie balls while learning that the greatest danger came not from battle, but from disease. They also learned that many regiments were decimated, losing as much as 50 percent of their manpower even before they saw combat.

In the “camp life” station, students had to pitch tents in record time while others experienced free time, pitching horseshoes. The food station provided students a taste of the soldier diet. Students ground their own coffee beans, cooked their own johnny cakes, and dipped their hardtack bread into their freshly brewed coffee. In the ammunition station, students filled water balloons as part of their battle preparations. Union soldiers had eight balloons while Confederate soldiers had only six.

The highlight of the day was the reenactment of the third day of the Battle of Gettysburg – the famous “Pickett’s Charge” – on an open field at Hoomaluhia Park. Led by two Confederate officers, General Watkins and General Paul, 80 Confederate soldiers advanced from two sides and charged Union defense lines held strong by 140 soldiers who were commanded

by Lt. James Knoll. Both sides lobbied water balloons at each other until the order for retreat was given to the Confederates!

As the day ended, both sides sat on the open field to reflect on the day’s events and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of both sides, the reasons why this war was a tragedy of epic proportions, and finally, why this was called a “Brothers War.”

Scout Salute

F

riday night. Light streams from an open door leading to the basement of Bachelot Hall. Inside there is a clutter of long tables, chairs, and benches. It is a small, modest room. It is the home of Troop 42.

Seventy-five years ago, Brother Moroni, Maryknoller and former wrestler, organized the Scout troop as a way of involving eleven- and twelve-yearold boys in a wholesome activity. He’d take them camping and teach them a little wrestling on the side.

The boys would learn Scouting skills and earn merit badges. That was 1927.

Since then, at least 99 boys have attained the coveted Eagle rank. Records prior to 1954 are not available. No matter. What is on record is Troop 42’s high success rate of graduating Eagles, one that far surpasses the national average of 2%.

Dedicated Scoutmasters who remain with the troop for a lengthy period of time. Brother Venard Ruane, Scoutmaster for 18 years (1952-1970), is one such example. His notable recollections include hiking from Sacred Heart Church to Hanauma Bay where the boys eventually camped on the beach and used sand and ocean water to clean their mess kits. Brother Venard is also remembered for establishing the drum and bugle corps, the nucleus of which were Scouts.

Another long time Scoutmaster is Mr. Francis Mau, who has been with the Troop for 15 years, the last 10 as Scoutmaster (1987-2002).

Under his leadership, Troop 42 trekked on Alaskan glaciers and set sail as crew for Catalina Island via the three mast sailing vessel, The American Pride. After orchestrating many lively adventures, Mr. Mau will be retiring at the end of this Scouting year.

Dependable Assistant Leaders. Past and present Scoutmasters have always been able to surround themselves with strong assistant leaders, each enriching the troop in his own special way. In the 1980s, Edward Hoo ’83 was known for always packing black bean sauce, because you just never knew when the boys would bring a fresh catch to the campfire, as they once did in Waihole Valley. The boys dammed the stream and snared shrimp. Tony Laitila ’87, age 16 at this memorable camp, later became an assistant leader himself.

Currently serving as Advancement Officer, Laitila is now in his 23rd year of scouting with T42.

Parents also observe changes in their sons as the boys move up the ranks. Jared Kaufman ’58, involved parent for 22 years, feels that his sons Jared ’96 and Michael ’99 became more independent and self sufficient as they hiked, camped, and traveled off island.

ON AND ABOUT CAMPUS

M

aryknoll School has been selected to receive an Arts Excellence Award 2002 for its support of the arts and artsintegrated education at the middle school level. The award, which is accompanied by a $500 prize, will be presented to grade school principal Paul O’Brien and art teacher Cat Iwami at the annual “Celebrate the ARTS! Alliance Awards 2002” on October 5th at the Hawaii Theatre.

Ashley Labasan ’02, Kerianne Pascua ’02 and Aaron Wong ’02 represented the Maryknoll Math Team at the 24th Annual State Math Bowl and were crowned the Division A state runners-up. The entire Maryknoll Math Team, which consists of more than a dozen talented and dedicated students, was also awarded a trophy as the Most Improved Team in the monthly Oahu Math League competitions.

In the recent “We Can End Poverty If We Work Together” Essay and Poster contest sponsored by the Diocese of Honolulu’s Office for Social Ministry, eighth grader Lynell Uyeda ’06 was awarded first place in the essay category, and sixth grader Chanel Casamina ’08 was awarded first place in the grade 3-6 division of the poster contest.

Two teams of Maryknoll seniors competed in the 2002 Physics Olympics, held at Leeward Community College, at which high school students compete in six events based on physics concepts such as electrostatics, vectors, and particle reflection.

One of Maryknoll’s teams – whose members were Ben Dunn, Jordan Tanabe and Aaron Wong from the AP (advanced placement) Physics Class; and TraciAnn Harada and Lynn Chikasuye from the AP Chemistry class – won first place in the electrostatics event, and took second place overall. Also competing were AP Physics students Rena Chock, Maria Sakata, Tracey Lew, John Kwong and Edward Wong.

The event is sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

In the annual Language Arts Showcase Writing Competition, sponsored by the Hawaii Council of Teachers of English, two awards (“winner” and “honorable mention”) are given in each of five writing categories to students in grades four through eight. This year, nine students at the grade school received awards: Lia Cornair ’10 (honorable mention – short story), David Polansky ’10 (honorable mention – short story and poetry), Ann Macarayan ’10 (honorable mention – poetry), Chelsea Fortuna ’09 (honorable mention – essay), Brent Koki ’09 (honorable mention – giving information), Andrew Garcia ’09 (honorable mention – personal narrative), Jake Sangren ’08 (honorable mention – short story), Mia Omori ’07 (honorable mention – poetry; winner – essay), and Benjamin Lee ’07 (winner – giving information).

All of Maryknoll’s AP Chemistry students participated in the Chemistry Olympiad, which consisted of 60 multiple choice questions. The two highest scores were sent for consideration at the local level of competition. Aaron Wong ’02 scored among the top eight in the state.

Kelsie Lau ’12 was the 2nd place winner in the kindergarten to grade four category of the City and County of Honolulu’s “2002 Sew A Lei for Memorial Day” poster contest. She received a certificate of achievement from Mayor Jeremy Harris, along with two interisland roundtrip tickets via Aloha Airlines.

TraciAnn Harada ’02, Shannon Riley ’02 and Jennifer Sterlacci ’02 entered the 2002 Hawaii State Science Fair with a project entitled “Attempting to Bioremediate the Maryknoll High School Cooling Tower Wastewater.” Their team effort was recognized with an award for resource conservation from the Hawaii State Dept. of Business, Economic Development and Tourism - Energy Division, and an award from the Honolulu Board of Water Supply for Water Conservation.

The Junior Class Commitment Ceremony (formerly known as the Ring Ceremony) was held at Sacred Heart Church on February 11, 2002 with Fr. Gary Secor ’69 presiding. As part of this ceremony, the Paschal candle, which symbolizes the light of Christ, is lit. The Class of 2003 committed themselves, in the presence of the Maryknoll community and their parents, to continue the Maryknoll tradition of being “Light to the World,” and to do so by following our school’s motto, Noblesse Oblige (“to whom much is given, much is expected”). The ceremony marks the formal recognition of the juniors as upperclassmen.

Maryknoll’s grade school students and their families gave generously to support the widows and children of New York’s firefighters after 9/11.

Thanks to the generosity of Maryknoll’s grade school students and their families, the school was able to donate $2,263.50 to New York’s Uniformed Firefighters Association Widows’ and Children’s Fund. In his note of thanks, UFA President Kevin Gallagher wrote, “The September 11 tragedy affected the entire world, but was particularly devastating to the New York City Fire Department. We lost 343 of our brothers and are still trying our best to deal with that horrible reality.

The care and concern shown by you and so many others will enable us to provide a significant measure of financial help for the families they have left behind. I can assure you that firefighters never forget their fallen brothers and your contribution assists us in that worthy effort.

Maryknoll School Receives Accreditation From Three Agencies

A Thousand Wishes for Global Peace

O

n March 11, 2002, the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Accreditation Team arrived on the grade school campus bright and early. The team was led by chairperson Jeanne Register from Mayfield Senior School in Pasadena, California.

Other members of the visitation team were Deacon LeRoy Andrews, principal of St. Joseph’s Junior-Senior High School in Hilo; Timothy Cantley of Sacred Hearts Academy; Betty Hart of Aiea High School; Carol Iacovelli of Punahou School; Valerie Koide of St. Patrick’s School; Joseph Schmidt, headmaster of Seabury Hall on Maui; Michael Weaver, principal of Damien Memorial High School; and Carole West, principal of St. Catherine School on Kauai.

For three days, the team visited classrooms, and met with teachers, administrators, board members, students, and parents. Maryknoll was reviewed – and accredited for six years – by the Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC), the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA), and the Hawaii Association of Independent Schools (HAIS). The school received many commendations and a few recommendations to assist with future planning of programs and facilities.

High School Students Respond to Tragedy with Generosity

W

hen the September 11 tragedy occurred, it caused the originally scheduled “Welcome Back [to school] Dance” to be postponed one week to September 21. In rescheduling the dance, we saw an opportunity to take action and do what we could as a school to make a difference. In advertising and promoting our rescheduled dance, Maryknoll High School pledged to donate all profits made from the dance to a charity fund relating to the tragedy.

Possibly the largest turnout ever for a Maryknoll dance attended our benefit/welcome back dance. With gates open to both OIA and ILH students, no one was turned away. By the end of the night, we had netted approximately $1,700 for donation.

Student body president Vanessa Sim ’02 and vice president Melissa Orozco ’02 and the rest of the Maryknoll Student Senate presented the proceeds to the Aloha United Way. We trust that the money will be put to good use in whatever way deemed necessary.

Furthermore, we are glad to contribute and do what we can to express our sympathy for the victims of the attacks, and the pride, loyalty and spirit that we have for our country.

n Spring 2001, Lynell Uyeda, then a 7th grader at Maryknoll School, inspired her peers and teachers to fold 1,000 paper cranes after she presented her MPD (Music, PE, Drama) project to her class.

For her project, Lynell researched the story of Sadako, a young Japanese girl who lived in Hiroshima during World War II. After being exposed to nuclear fallout, Sadako developed leukemia at age 12. In the hospital, a friend told her that if she made 1,000 paper cranes, her wish to get well would be granted.

Sadako died before she reached 700 cranes. Her friends finished the 1,000 cranes and placed them at her side for her funeral.

Several years later, a memorial to Sadako was erected in Hiroshima as a symbol of peace. Children from all over the world send their cranes to the memorial as part of the international prayers for peace.

Lynell Uyeda invited all students, teachers and staff at Maryknoll School to fold cranes in memory of Sadako. The cranes were mailed to Japan, to be included in the celebration of Peace Day on August 6.

In January 2002, Masafumi Okamoto from the city of Hiroshima, sent a letter of thanks, saying, “I would like to express my gratitude for the broad understanding of peace you expressed by sending senbazuru (folded paper cranes) to our city. Your paper cranes were placed in Peace Memorial Park at the foot of the Children’s Peace Monument, a statue created with the spirit of peace in mind and to comfort the souls of those who were taken from us by the atomic bombing. Together with you, we wish for the abolition of nuclear weapons and the establishment of global peace so that a tragic event such as this will never be repeated.”

DO YOU CONSIDER THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR CAREER AS AN EDUCATOR AT MARYKNOLL?

The highlights of my career as an educator at Maryknoll are those special moments when you know that a student has achieved that “Aha! Experience”…or the notes slipped on my desk that say, “Thank you for the study session,” or others saying, “I’m glad you believed in me, when I didn’t.” The greatest highlights are those students who come back to visit just to say hi. I’d like to think I made a little difference in their lives.

I have been so blessed to have many students who were all individuals and have left me with lasting impressions. There are too many to mention, but I hope sixth grade will always bring memories to make them smile. It is truly a pleasure to have any one of them come back to visit, to get email, to receive long distance calls from a student in college, or just bump into them after so many years.

The students who are moving into 7th or 8th grades, or are beginning high school and college certainly hold a special place in my heart.

For those students who have become parents and/or moved into careers that have utilized their unique talents, I can say that they have all enriched my life.

eala Wong Cupp ‘69 was a 13-year student at Maryknoll.

She attended Seattle University and Central Washington University, earning a degree in Elementary Education/Language Arts. She returned home to earn her professional diploma (5th year) and complete other continuing education courses at the University of Hawaii.

Keala taught 2nd grade at Holy Family School for three years, did job sharing at Waikiki School in a 5th grade class, and substituted for the DOE and Star of the Sea School. Then Keala came home to Maryknoll, where she has taught for the past 22 years. When not busy teaching, her hobbies have included being an enthusiastic fan at ILH games, doing needlework, and reading. She also started a craft business called “Fun Bowls” with her friend, Lilah Amoy.

In Spring 2002, Keala accepted a position with the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, NV. As the school year ended and she prepared for her move to the mainland, Keala reflected on her career at Maryknoll School and shared her thoughts about the future.

Being at Maryknoll has always seemed like my “second home.”

Many think of home as being a place filled with love, support, and a sense of connectedness. This has always been true at Maryknoll. It has been a place where you can always count on seeing “friends and families.” It has been a pleasure to reconnect with former classmates and even teach their children, as well as meet and work with so many other wonderful families. No matter where I’ve traveled, there always seems to be someone with a link to Maryknoll.

Hawaii and Maryknoll will always be my home. I know I will truly miss the professionalism and care of our faculty and staff, as well as the spirit of our students. I will miss my family, many friends, and so many students that have enriched and been so much a part of my life.

My memories will include being with family and friends, going on picnics, parades, cool trade winds, beautiful mountains and beaches.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO IN THE FUTURE? I hope to live closer to where I am teaching, have more quality time to spend with my husband and family, and take advantage of the many traveling opportunities that living in Las Vegas will allow. I hope to see some great shows that I never had time to see on previous visits to Las Vegas.

I hope that family and the many friends we have made will always keep in touch and come to visit us. Of course, I hope to come back home to Hawaii and be able to enjoy all the things that make Hawaii a great place to be.

Keala and her husband Don will celebrate their 27th wedding anniversary in August. Their eldest son, Brad, lives in Colorado and is a computer consultant. Their son Chris will graduate from the University of Hawaii in August 2002, and hopes to go into pilot training in the fall. Katie ’01 attends Seattle University and hopes to become a pediatric nurse.

Many blessings and best wishes to Keala and her family as they embark on this new adventure.

Stars Shine for Scholarship The 5th Annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship Dinner was held on March 17, 2002 in the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.

This event served as the official kickoff of Maryknoll School’s yearlong 75th anniversary celebration. Alumni turned out in record numbers, filling many of the tables at the dinner. Several Maryknoll Sisters who had taught at the school were in attendance and recognized during the program.

Tim Dolan ’03 was awarded the 2002 Kekumano Scholarship, which is given to a student who demonstrates excellence inside and outside the classroom, and exemplifies the school motto, Noblesse Oblige, “to whom much is given, much is expected.”

Nina Keali’iwahamana Rodrigues Rapozo ’54 was given the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service, for her generosity in sharing her vocal talent with the community. That she is much loved by those who know her was evident by the amazing line-up of entertainers who volunteered to perform.

The evening also included a silent auction that raised $19,700, exceeding last year’s record-breaking amount. Overall, the dinner raised $67,000 for the Kekumano Scholarship Fund.

Nina’s brother Boyce Rodrigues told the story of Nina being sent, as an infant, to live with her paternal grandmother because her siblings had the measles. Those siblings were being hanai’d by their Hawaiian grandmother, so Nina was hanai’d by their Portuguese grandmother, whose parish was Maryknoll. “So if it wasn’t for the measles and my Portuguese grandmother,” Boyce said, “Nina probably would have gone to Roosevelt with Lani and me, or Kamehameha Schools with my brother John!” Boyce performed for Nina two songs that their father used to sing for them.

Marlene Sai charmed the audience with her rendition of “Maile Swing,” and also performed “Moku O Keawe,” which was “the last song that was taught to her (Nina) by her mama.”

Bev Noa graced the stage in a performance of “Lovely Hula Hands.” A real trouper, she performed flawlessly while sporting a cast on her fractured foot.

Introduced by Cha Thompson as “the Tita from Molokai,” Melveen Leed began by announcing, “Since I’m standing by the piano, I have to look the part. I’m going to have to take my shawl off.

To all the Sisters out there, I know you can never dress like this, so I’ll do it for you, okay? That’s why I never became a nun – because I love my gowns!”

She went on to dazzle the crowd with a soulful performance of “Poor Butterfly,” and impersonations of jazz greats Della Reese and Nancy Wilson.

She ended with an impersonation of Al Jolson singing, “I Wanna Go Back to My Little Grass Shack.”

Auntie Genoa Keawe, determined to perform for Nina despite having undergone surgery, wowed the crowd with her incredible talent and vocal endurance.

Bill Kaiwa, “The Boy from Laupahoehoe,” was a regular on the “Hawaii Calls” radio program, and has sung with Nina many times over the years. As a special treat, he perfomed a song that he had sung for Nina’s mother, Victoria I’i Rodrigues – a noted composer, musician and performer of Hawaiian music.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION REPORT

A Message from Paul...

Dear Friends, Congratulations! Alumni lead the way!

At the halfway point of the Annual Investment in Maryknoll (AIM) program, we have exceeded 7% participation. This is more than the participation at the same time last year and we are well on the way to reaching our goal of 16.8%.

I thank you for your support of the AIM program and ask that you encourage your friends to do the same. As I mentioned previously, the annual contributions are important to the school’s operating budget, but most important is our participation, which influences contributions from corporations, foundations, and trusts. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Maryknoll School and contribute to its future success.

Planning for the 3rd Annual Alumni Week under the leadership of Marleen Silva ’78 is proceeding exceedingly well. Alumni Week features three events with the Bowlarama, 11th Annual Golf Tournament and the Alumni Class Dinner.

Speaking of the class dinner – what a DEAL! This year’s Alumni Week Class Dinner is a special event oriented to Class Reunions! All planning and coordination is handled by the Alumni Week Planning Committee and Development Office. The only requirement is that each reunion class inform Lori Kern Carlos ’87 of the numbers attending. Anna Boner Chenault celebrated her 75th birthday in January 2002 with “good food, great music and wonderful friends” at a luau held at the Lion’s Club Pavilion in Ewa Beach. Six of her classmates attended, which, Anna says, “made it a most wonderful celebration!”

Stella Wong, Gabrielle Makuakane, Edward Ho and Marylene Chun…We were glad to hear from their classmate Jeff Strauser who lives in Terrebonne, OR with his wife of almost 27 years, Sandy. Russell Dung has been named Hawaii Pacific University’s new head basketball coach, stepping out of the shadow and into the shoes left vacant by Tony Sellitto, Maryknoll’s former athletic director, who retired recently from HPU. We look forward to great things – after all, Russell coached Maryknoll’s girls varsity basketball team to the state championship title in 1977 and 1978. Congratulations, Coach Russell!

Dr. Sheri Chinen Biesen married Dr. John Evangelos Gizis in Las Vegas, NV on September 8, 2001. Because of the events of 9/11, the wedding reception and honeymoon were delayed. The bride’s parents, Teddy and Nanci Chinen, welcomed the newlyweds home with a reception and honeymoon in December/January. Sheri is an assistant professor of Radio, Television and Film at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ; her husband is an assistant professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Delaware.

Joanna Filbert Vazquez and son Matthew were also there, making their annual visit from Colorado, where Joanna is in culinary school...Not to be outdone in the travel department, Camille Domaloan Michel attended a conference in St. Louis, MO in April and had brunch with Kim Laboy Catolos and her son Quinn. Then it was off to New York for the alumni trip to the Maryknoll Mother House. On a layover at Chicago O’Hare, Camille ran into Mara Ishida Saito, who was on Kim Laboy Catolos ’84 her way back to and son Quinn.

Hawaii after a buying trip – two mommies on the mainland missing their three kids at home! In New York, Sharon Goo took the train from the city to the Maryknoll Mother House to have lunch with the alumni group visiting from Hawaii.

(Camille and Kristi later shared their trip experiences and were surprised to discover each had met up with classmates in New York. The flurry of emails that followed resulted in Sharon and Cecelia reuniting for the first time in 18 years. Coincidence? We think not!)…Cheryl Ann Sanchez Vierra was recently honored as Staff of the Quarter at the Ala Moana Hotel where she is the sales

manager in charge of all the sports groups (ILH, OIA and collegiate), plus schools, bands and kamaaina groups. She has been with the hotel for three years and says, “Need a room? Call me.” She and her husband Lance, who’s with HPD, have two girls, Tyanna Marie (4) and Taylor Christine (16 months). Cheryl Ann has also been with American Airlines for 16 years, where she works part-time in reservations/sales. And if that isn’t enough, she still sells homes as a part-time realtor at Royal Hawaiian Land Co., Ltd. She writes, “Life is busy working so many jobs but family is my #1 priority and…life is good! Quality time is the answer.

I mean, geez, I know of at least three ’95ers that are getting married!” He wouldn’t divulge names, but one-third of the mystery was solved ten days later when Valentino Valdez emailed to say he was marrying Katrina Souza (a ’95 graduate of Kamehameha) on June 29! Valentino has been working in the creative department at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for about a year now, and gave us these updates: “Cori Nasu (’96) is also working at the Honolulu StarBulletin, in the accounting department.

Tyrone Cheung is working at Canopus (California) as a database administrator.

James Lee is working at Infospace (Seattle) as a manager in software development.” He also included Wesley Lum in his update.

During his program, he and MBA classmate Francis Duhaylongsod, a heart surgeon, entered the annual business plan competition with a plan for Dr. Duhaylongsod’s company, Surgical Devices of Hawaii, Inc., which makes a catheter designed to prevent stroke during heart surgery. They won second place, including a $15,000 prize, and the award for best techonology team…Wendy Bartolome Mason works with the state of Hawaii’s Department of Public Safety as a registered professional nurse at Halawa Correctional Facility. She married police officer Joshua Mason in May 2001, and they welcomed their daughter, Savannah-Marie Mason, on May 15, 2002. Congratulations!

to the Public Administration Master’s Degree Program at the University of Hawaii…Glenn Dela Cruz, a student at USC, got his 15 minutes of fame as NSYNC member Joey Fatone on the MTV show, “Becoming,” in which fans are made over into their favorite stars and remake a music video. Glenn’s classmate Lynie Liezl Pascua emails, “He was kidnapped in the morning by an MTV staff and met up with other people, flown in from all over the country, who also idolize NSYNC. The five men were treated like rock stars. Not only did they get to learn the intricate dance routine, but they were given makeovers, taken on lavish shopping sprees, and given luxurious gifts such as cell phones with unlimited minutes, phone cards, karaoke boxes, PlayStation 2, $500 sunglasses and other pricey memorabilia.” Liezl added, “I’m sure that no one from our class would be surprised that this is all happening to him!” The show aired on May 11.

Kainani Collins completed her sophomore year at the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she is majoring in criminal justice. She is on the Dean’s Honor List and this past spring was inducted as a lifetime member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholarship, and was presented an achievement award from UNLV’s Golden Key International Honor Society. Her plan for Fall 2002 includes traveling to San Sebastian, Spain as an exchange student at the University of the Basque Country. Muy excellente!

In Memoriam Irene Kalanikauleleiwi Hoke Spencer Howell gave 44 years of loving service to Maryknoll as school secretary, principal’s secretary, and college guidance secretary.

She passed away at the age of 82 on March 6, 2002 while her children and grandchildren recited the 23rd psalm (“The Lord is my shepherd”) nearby. Among her survivors are daughter Faye Spencer Kim ’63 and grandson Matt Kim ’84.

The family has started a fund to establish a scholarship in Irene’s name, and welcomes donations. Checks can be made payable to “Maryknoll School” and sent to the Office of Development at 1526 Alexander Street, Honolulu, HI 96822.

Fr. Joseph Matheis, former pastor of Sacred Heart Church, passed away this year on Easter Sunday at the age of 74.

Fr. Matheis was ordained a Maryknoll priest in 1956. Among the parishes he served were St. Benedict (“the Painted Church”) in Honaunau on the Big Island, and St. John the Baptist in Honolulu. He was also assigned to build a church near the developing resort area of South Kohala on the Big Island.

According to the Honolulu Advertiser, “While the church was under construction, tourists joined local residents at Sunday Mass under a coconut grove. Matheis has a hand in the construction of the church and he became known as the ‘builder priest.’”

Fr. Matheis began serving as the pastor of Sacred Heart Church during the 1972-73

school year. In 1981, he left to enter a treatment center for alcoholic priests on the East Coast. Six months later, he returned to Hawaii to help others fight substance abuse, earning his certification as a counselor. His counseling office and residence for nearly seven years was a 37foot motor home that he bought and parked on the grounds of St. Pius X Church in Manoa.

Fr. Matheis retired in 1993 and spent his remaining years in the residential care facility in Maryknoll, NY. Grade school vice principal Carole Ota said, “Some of us will have fond memories of him zooming around Makiki in his silver Honda coupe with personalized ‘FA JO’ license plates, and his traditional ‘Mo’ bettah we whack ’em’ after saying grace.”

After Fr. Matheis’ passing, students and faculty at the grade school remembered him with a special prayer at their morning assembly.

75th Anniversary Celebration Begins with Founders Day Mass

Founders Week Mass at St. Augustine Church in Waikiki begins with a procession of Maryknoll School’s class banners.

The annual Founders Week celebration marked the official beginning of the yearlong celebration of Maryknoll School’s 75th anniversary.

The week’s activities included Mass for grades 5 through 7 at Sacred Heart Church, and Mass at St. Augustine Church for grades 8 through 12, which was followed by a luncheon at Seafood Village for alumni and special guests of Maryknoll School. On campus, the students were served ice cream – a contemporary tradition that has become a part of campus celebrations, as ice cream was a favorite treat of the Maryknoll Sisters.

Founders Week is celebrated each year to commemorate the February 14, 1920 date when Mary Joseph “Mollie” Rogers and the Teresians received canonical recognition as The Foreign Mission Sisters of St. Dominic – later changed to the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic.

The homily by Fr. Gary Secor ’69 challenged students (“the shoots”) to honor and learn from alumni (“the roots”) so that someday they can themselves give back (“bear fruit”) to Maryknoll and the greater community.

Alumni Reunite with Maryknoll Sisters in

n April 2002, a spirited alumnae group journeyed to visit the Sisters at the “Mother House” – the Maryknoll Sisters Center in Ossining, NY. This was the second official visit by a group of Maryknoll School graduates; a smaller group made a similar trip one year ago.

The contingent from Honolulu included Agnes Sills Cordeiro ’37, Dulinda Gomes Ernesto ’37, Lucile Smith Mistysyn ’37, Virgie Gonsalves ’38, Nancy Hada Nakamura ’40, Ruth Yamamoto Saito ’46, Viola Pavao Quinn ’49, Viki Quinn Ventura ’79 (and her daughter Dana) and Christine Ribble. Mercedes Wong Manalili ’58 and her husband Donald joined the group from their home in Hilo, HI. Traveling from various parts of the mainland were Elizabeth Haggood Helfrich ’39 (Salinas, CA), Joan Brenchley Campbell ’40 (Baltimore, MD), Napua Prado Demers ’58 (Sun Valley, CA), and Mary Finnegan Ehring ’58 (Altadena, CA). Another group traveled by train back to the city, where they went to the top of the Empire State Building, shopped for souvenirs, visited the famous Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum, and got caught in a dramatic rainstorm on the way back to Grand Central Station.

On the last day, New York-based alumni Alice Bugman ’95, Sharon Goo ’84, and Brian Mistysyn ’95 joined the group at the Mother House for lunch and a tour. Later that evening, LeAnne Mistysyn ’97 arrived with fiancé Adam to spirit away grandma Lucile for dinner.

Despite a very early morning departure from the Mother House to the aiport in White Plains, the group remained in high spirits. Most of the alumnae went on to spend a few days in Las Vegas before returning home to Honolulu.

It’s Electric!

by Lance Suzuki After months of planning, sweat, and tears, a dedicated group of Maryknoll High School students entered Hawaiian Electric Company’s 7th Annual Electron Marathon on March 23, 2002. Students were required to design and build the body and engine of an electric vehicle, with the only requirements being the laws of physics, two batteries as a power source, and their imaginations. They sacrificed their weekends and – especially as race day drew near – their hours after school to complete the car, test its components, and troubleshoot the inevitable problems that emerged.

Dominic Wong ’62 volunteered to guide the students through this process and tirelessly aided students in their efforts. He not only provided invaluable advice in vehicle design but also made efforts to teach engineering and scientific principles.

The competition took place over two days, as vehicles were judged for their construction, safety, documentation, and oral presentations. Of the 27 schools entered, Maryknoll placed 8th in oral presentation, 4th in construction and safety, and 16th overall.

Mr. Wong has vowed that the learning experience for next year’s students will be much richer and will build on this year’s success.
