STARS SHINEFOR SCHOLARSHIP
Stars Shine for Scholarship
The 5th Annual Monsignor Charles A. Kekumano Scholarship Dinner was held on March 17, 2002 in the Coral Ballroom of the Hilton Hawaiian Village.
This event served as the official kickoff of Maryknoll Schoolís yearlong 75th anniversary celebration. Alumni turned out in record numbers, filling many of the tables at the dinner. Several Maryknoll Sisters who had taught at the school were in attendance and recognized during the program.
Tim Dolan ’03 was awarded the 2002 Kekumano Scholarship, which is given to a student who demonstrates excellence inside and outside the classroom, and exemplifies the school motto, Noblesse Oblige, ìto whom much is given, much is expected.î
Marlene Sai charmed the audience with her rendition of ìMaile Swing,î and also performed ìMoku O Keawe,î which was ìthe last song that was taught to her (Nina) by her mama.î
Nina Keali’iwahamana Rodrigues Rapozo ’54 was given the Noblesse Oblige Award for Service, for her generosity in sharing her vocal talent with the community. That she is much loved by those who know her was evident by the amazing line-up of entertainers who volunteered to perform.
The evening also included a silent auction that raised $19,700, exceeding last yearís record-breaking amount. Overall, the dinner raised $67,000 for the Kekumano Scholarship Fund.

Ninaís brother Boyce Rodrigues told the story of Nina being sent, as an infant, to live with her paternal grandmother because her siblings had the measles. Those siblings were being hanaiíd by their Hawaiian grandmother, so Nina was hanaiíd by their Portuguese grandmother, whose parish was Maryknoll. ìSo if it wasnít for the measles and my Portuguese grandmother,î Boyce said, ìNina probably would have gone to Roosevelt with Lani and me, or Kamehameha Schools with my brother John!î Boyce performed for Nina two songs that their father used to sing for them. Bev Noa graced the stage in a performance of ìLovely Hula Hands.î Areal trouper, she performed flawlessly while sporting a cast on her fractured foot. Introduced by Cha Thompson as ìthe Tita from Molokai,î Melveen Leed began by announcing, ìSince Iím standing by the piano, I have to look the part. Iím going to have to take my shawl off. To all the Sisters out there, I know you can never dress like this, so Iíll do it for you, okay? Thatís why I never became a nun ñ because I love my gowns!î She went on to dazzle the crowd with a soulful performance of ìPoor Butterfly,î and impersonations of jazz greats Della Reese and Nancy Wilson. She ended with an impersonation of Al Jolson singing, ìI Wanna Go Back to My Little Grass Shack.î
Les Ceballos (pictured) and Aaron Sala performed ìYou Must Have Been a Beautiful Babyî and ìWith ASong In My Heart.î

ATale of Two Sonnys: Dinner guests included kumu hula Sonny Ching (left) and Aloha Airlines chairman Sonny Ching.
Following the traditional adornment of the Monsignorís photo with lei, Melisa Orozco í02 sang ìThe Queenís Prayer.î Auntie Genoa Keawe, determined to perform for Nina despite having undergone surgery, wowed the crowd with her incredible talent and vocal endurance. Bill Kaiwa, ìThe Boy from Laupahoehoe,î was a regular on the ìHawaii Callsî radio program, and has sung with Nina many times over the years. As a special treat, he perfomed a song that he had sung for Ninaís mother, Victoria Iíi Rodrigues ñ a noted composer, musician and performer of Hawaiian music.

The show closed with songs by Nina, and with everyone singing ìHawaii Aloha,î including (Lto R) Mahi Beamer, who served as the pianist for all the eveningís performers; entertainment chair and program emcee Cha Thompson; vocalist Aaron Sala; honoree Nina Rapozo; program emcee Joe Recca; and Kekumano Steering Committee member and dinner emcee Eileen Lota.
The Kekumano Choir greeted guests with song: (front, Lto R): Emiko Ono í08, Mariliz LaPorte í08, Chelsea Cabral í08, Erin Lau í08, Jolene Young í08, Katharine Barnett í08; (back, Lto R): Peter Nozaki í08, Jason Leong-Yep í07, Jocelyn Miyazu í08, Casey Watson í08, Jessica Chang í08, Rebecca Charltoní07.

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION REPORT
A Message from Paul...
Dear Friends,
Congratulations! Alumni lead the way!
At the halfway point of the Annual Investment in Maryknoll (AIM) program, we have exceeded 7% participation. This is more than the participation at the same time last year and we are well on the way to reaching our goal of 16.8%.
I thank you for your support of the AIM program and ask that you encourage your friends to do the same. As I mentioned previously, the annual contributions are important to the schoolís operating budget, but most important is our participation, which influences contributions from corporations, foundations, and trusts. I canít think of a better way to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Maryknoll School and contribute to its future success.
Planning for the 3rd Annual Alumni Week under the leadership of Marleen Silva í78 is proceeding exceedingly well. Alumni Week features three events with the Bowlarama, 11th Annual Golf Tournament and the Alumni Class Dinner.
Speaking of the class dinner ñ what a DEAL! This yearís Alumni Week Class Dinner is a special event oriented to Class Reunions! All planning and coordination is handled by the Alumni Week Planning Committee and Development Office. The only requirement is that each reunion class inform Lori Kern Carlos í87 of the numbers attending. The committee will handle all coordination with the Japanese Cultural Center, dinner arrangements, program, class photos, and entertainment. See you at the 3rd Annual Alumni Week events.
Again, I am thankful for your continued participation in the Alumni Association, enthusiastic support of Maryknoll School, and your support of the Annual Giving Program.
Aloha,
Paul Y. Chinen ’57
Alumni Association President
