Class of 1945
Anna Boner Chenault celebrated her 75th birthday in January 2002 with ìgood food, great music and wonderful friendsî at a luau held at the Lionís Club Pavilion in Ewa Beach. Six of her classmates attended, which, Anna says, ìmade it a most wonderful celebration!î

Mahalo to Sandy Asejo Campos for putting together a class table at the Kekumano Dinner, which included Carol Kwak Wong, Derrick Wong, Danny Tom, Stella Wong, Gabrielle Makuakane, Edward Ho and Marylene ChunÖWe were glad to hear from their classmate Jeff Strauser who lives in Terrebonne, OR with his wife of almost 27 years, Sandy. Jeff works for Deschutes County Mental Health. He still enjoys performing music, which he does almost every weekend. Jeff and Sandy have two daughters and one grandson.
Class of 1970
Russell Dung has been named Hawaii Pacific Universityís new head basketball coach, stepping out of the shadow and into the shoes left vacant by Tony Sellitto, Maryknollís former athletic director, who retired recently from HPU. We look forward to great things ñ after all, Russell coached Maryknollís girls varsity basketball team to the state championship title in 1977 and 1978. Congratulations, Coach Russell!
Class of 1975
Kudos to Nonie Toledo, vice president and general manager of Sprint Hawaii, who was welcomed into the 2002 Alumni Hall of Honor by the University of Hawaii-Manoa College of Business Administration and School of Travel Industry Management. Of the 49 members who have been inducted into the Hall of Honor in the last ten years, only 10 women (including Nonie) have achieved this recognition.
Class of 1979
Angela Wong, MD and her husband Greg Witmer announced the birth of their son, Harrison James, on December 2, 2001. Angela writes, ìMy husband (Greg Witmer) and I live in Phoenix, AZ. I am in private practice as a pediatrician and doing well. We also have an older son, William, age 4.î

Class of 1980
Dr. Sheri Chinen Biesen married Dr. John Evangelos Gizis in Las Vegas, NVon September 8, 2001. Because of the events of 9/11, the wedding reception and honeymoon were delayed. The brideís parents, Teddy and Nanci Chinen, welcomed the newlyweds home with a reception and honeymoon in December/January. Sheri is an assistant professor of Radio, Television and Film at Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ; her husband is an assistant professor of Astronomy and Physics at the University of Delaware.

Class of 1983
Next time this year, the Class of 1983 will gather for its 20th reunion. Class members are asked to do one of three things: volunteer to help with planning, fill out and return the questionnaire you received in the mail, or block off July 2003 on your calendar. Class agent Monica Domaloan Ng Pack, who is coordinating the reunion planning, also writes, ìThanks to Lori Tseu Rodriguez for holding a get-together for Kevin Sullivan, whoís back from teaching English in Japan. Jill Matsuda Matro, Lorraine Samson Kojima, Darrin Chun, Sue Lee, Sharon Hiu Ong, and Micheline Soong arrived with kids in tow. Also, I ran into Michael Siracusa, now president of Distributors Unlimited, Inc., at Longs Drugs in Hawaii Kai, where he was checking on the electronic merchandise that his own company supplies for their shelves. Glenn Nishimura and wife Michelle welcomed the arrival of their second son, Ricky Kazunari Nishimura, who was born on manager in charge of all the sports groups (ILH, OIA and collegiate), plus schools, bands and kamaaina groups. She has been with the hotel for three years and says, ìNeed a room? Call me.î She and her husband Lance, whoís with HPD, have two girls, Tyanna Marie (4) and Taylor Christine (16 months). Cheryl Ann has also been with American Airlines for 16 years, where she works part-time in reservations/sales. And if that isnít enough, she still sells homes as a part-time realtor at Royal Hawaiian Land Co., Ltd. She writes, ìLife is busy working so many jobs but family is my #1 priority andÖlife is good! Quality time is the answer. Thank you for all the good things happening at Maryknoll School.î

Joanna Filbert Vazquez and son Matthew were also there, making their annual visit from Colorado, where Joanna is in culinary school...Not to be outdone in the travel department, Camille Domaloan Michel attended a conference in St. Louis, MO in April and had brunch with Kim Laboy Catolos and her son Quinn. Then it was off to New York for the alumni trip to the Maryknoll Mother House. On a layover at Chicago OíHare, Camille ran into Mara Ishida Saito, who was on Kim Laboy Catolos í84 her way back to and son Quinn. Hawaii after a buying trip ñ two mommies on the mainland missing their three kids at home! In New York, Sharon Goo took the train from the city to the Maryknoll Mother House to have lunch with the alumni group visiting from Hawaii. (Camille and Kristi later shared their trip experiences and were surprised to discover each had met up with classmates in New York. The flurry of emails that followed resulted in Sharon and Cecelia reuniting for the first time in 18 years. Coincidence? from the University of Hawaii-Manoa. During his program, he and MBAclassmate Francis Duhaylongsod, a heart surgeon, entered the annual business plan competition with a plan for Dr. Duhaylongsodís company, Surgical Devices of Hawaii, Inc., which makes a catheter designed to prevent stroke during heart surgery. They won second place, including a $15,000 prize, and the award for best techonology teamÖWendy Bartolome Mason works with the state of Hawaiiís Department of Public Safety as a registered professional nurse at Halawa Correctional Facility. She married police officer Joshua Mason in May 2001, and they welcomed their daughter, Savannah-Marie Mason, on May 15, 2002. Congratulations!

Class of 1995
Wesley Lum emailed, ìAfter graduating from UH with a degree in Food Science in December 2000, Iíve been living in San Jose, CAworking for IBM doing computer stuff. I miss Hawaii a lot! And where the heck is the rest of the class of í95? I mean, geez, I know of at least three í95ers that are getting married!î He wouldnít divulge names, but one-third of the mystery was solved ten days later when Valentino Valdez emailed to say he was marrying Katrina Souza (a í95 graduate of Kamehameha) on June 29! Valentino has been working in the creative department at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for about a year now, and gave us these updates: ìCori Nasu (í96) is also working at the Honolulu StarBulletin, in the accounting department. Tyrone Cheung is working at Canopus (California) as a database administrator. James Lee is working at Infospace (Seattle) as a manager in software development.î He also included Wesley Lum in his update. Glad to see you guys in í95 looking out for each otherÖ
Class of 1996
Monica Lum graduated in May from the University of Redlands (CA) with an M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction/Elementary Education. She will continue to live and work in the Redlands area. Proud father Robert Lum announced the good news and thanked Maryknoll School for all it has done for Monica. Congratulations to the entire Lum family!
Class of 1997
LeAnne Mistysyn is working on her masters in international business on a full assistantship at Fairfield University in Connecticut. She was recently engaged to Adam MacAllister. They will marry next summer at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, where Adam is a cadet. Classmates Tiffany Young and Lori Moskal will be bridesmaids.
Class of 1998
Congratulations to Kristopher Kern who recently graduated from the University of San Francisco with a B.A. in politics. He has been awarded a Herman S. Doi Memorial Fellowship in association with his admission to the Public Administration Masterís Degree Program at the University of HawaiiÖGlenn Dela Cruz, a student at USC, got his 15 minutes of fame as NSYNC member Joey Fatone on the MTV show, ìBecoming,î in which fans are made over into their favorite stars and remake a music video. Glennís classmate Lynie Liezl Pascua emails, ìHe was kidnapped in the morning by an MTVstaff and met up with other people, flown in from all over the country, who also idolize NSYNC. The five men were treated like rock stars. Not only did they get to learn the intricate dance routine, but they were given makeovers, taken on lavish shopping sprees, and given luxurious gifts such as cell phones with unlimited minutes, phone cards, karaoke boxes, PlayStation 2, $500 sunglasses and other pricey memorabilia.î Liezl added, ìIím sure that no one from our class would be surprised that this is all happening to him!î The show aired on May 11.
Class of 1999
Niles Bartolome is working for the state of Hawaiiís Department of Health in management information systems as a data processing user support technician. He became an uncle in May (see Wendy Bartolome Mason í94).
Class of 2000
Kainani Collins completed her sophomore year at the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she is majoring in criminal justice. She is on the Deanís Honor List and this past spring was inducted as a lifetime member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholarship, and was presented an achievement award from UNLVís Golden Key International Honor Society. Her plan for Fall 2002 includes traveling to San Sebastian, Spain as an exchange student at the University of the Basque Country. Muy excellente!

In Fall 2001, Russell Sypowicz earned a 4.0 GPAand a place on the Presidentís List at Gonzaga University. Weíre proud of you, Russell!

In Memoriam
Irene Kalanikauleleiwi Hoke Spencer Howell gave 44 years of loving service to Maryknoll as school secretary, principalís secretary, and college guidance secretary. She passed away at the age of 82 on March 6, 2002 while her children and grandchildren recited the 23rd psalm (ìThe Lord is my shepherdî) nearby. Among her survivors are daughter Faye Spencer Kim ’63 and grandson Matt Kim ’84.
The family has started a fund to establish a scholarship in Ireneís name, and welcomes donations. Checks can be made payable to ìMaryknoll Schoolî and sent to the Office of Development at 1526 Alexander Street, Honolulu, HI 96822.
Mercedes Wong Manalili í58 and Sr. Virginia Therese Johnson
Fr. Joseph Matheis, former pastor of Sacred Heart Church, passed away this year on Easter Sunday at the age of 74. Fr. Matheis was ordained a Maryknoll priest in 1956. Among the parishes he served were St. Benedict (ìthe Painted Churchî) in Honaunau on the Big Island, and St. John the Baptist in Honolulu. He was also assigned to build a church near the developing resort area of South Kohala on the Big Island. According to the Honolulu Advertiser, ìWhile the church was under construction, tourists joined local residents at Sunday Mass under a coconut grove. Matheis has a hand in the construction of the church and he became known as the ëbuilder priest.íî
Fr. Matheis began serving as the pastor of Sacred Heart Church during the 1972-73 school year. In 1981, he left to enter a treatment center for alcoholic priests on the East Coast. Six months later, he returned to Hawaii to help others fight substance abuse, earning his certification as a counselor. His counseling office and residence for nearly seven years was a 37foot motor home that he bought and parked on the grounds of St. Pius X Church in Manoa.
Fr. Matheis retired in 1993 and spent his remaining years in the residential care facility in Maryknoll, NY.
Grade school vice principal Carole Ota said, ìSome of us will have fond memories of him zooming around Makiki in his silver Honda coupe with personalized ëFA JOílicense plates, and his traditional ëMoí bettah we whack íemíafter saying grace.î
After Fr. Matheisípassing, students and faculty at the grade school remembered him with a special prayer at their morning assembly.
