Introducing Maryknoll School: A Legacy of Vision & Values
Embarking on a journey more than nine and a half decades ago, the origins of Maryknoll School trace back to the vision of a young priest and the dedication of six Maryknoll Sisters. In 1927, this vision came to life as Maryknoll School was blessed and welcomed a modest student body of 170 eager learners. Nestled within a one-story building on Dole Street, the foundation was laid for what would become a remarkable educational institution.
Today, Maryknoll School stands as Hawai‘i’s largest co-educational pre–K through grade 12 Catholic school. We are committed to nurturing the complete development of each child, fostering a warm and inclusive community that thrives on innovation. Our holistic approach to education ensures that students emerge as well-rounded individuals who excel academically, athletically, artistically, linguistically, and in their commitment to social responsibility.
At Maryknoll, we instill in our students the skills and values necessary to become responsible global citizens, encapsulated by our school motto, “Noblesse Oblige,” to whom much is given, much is expected. Beyond academics, we focus on cultivating individuals of unwavering moral integrity and personal responsibility. Our students are encouraged to embrace principles of justice, respect, and equality, irrespective of their religious, social, or cultural backgrounds.
Guided by the enduring spirit and tradition of Noblesse Oblige, Maryknoll remains steadfastly dedicated to shaping 21st-century learners, leaders, and global citizens of impeccable character.

2024 Noblesse Oblige Scholarship Recipient

CONGRATULATIONS XANDER GABRIEL TORRES ’25
A previous Noblesse Oblige Scholar, Maryknoll School proudly recognizes senior Xander Gabriel Torres ’25 as the recipient of the 2024 Noblesse Oblige Endowed Scholarship in recognition of his academic excellence, but more importantly, his service to others.
Xander has attended Maryknoll School since 9th grade. Although it was not his first choice, Maryknoll has grown on him significantly, earning him the nickname "Mr. Maryknoll." Rooted in Catholic faith and inspired to follow Jesus by word and example, Xander is a beacon of inspiration for others. His dedication is characterized by both dependability and genuine enthusiasm.
He is actively involved in numerous clubs, including Campus Ministry, Music Ministry, Hawaiian Club, Spartan Spirit Club, and the Maryknoll Student Senate. Currently serving as Student Body President, Xander lives the spirit of Noblesse Oblige through his various roles—whether performing hula at Maryknoll events, working as an after-school care aide, or planning student activities with the Senate.
Xander plans to continue his education next year and is interested in pursuing nursing, teaching, or kinesiology to become an athletic trainer. His true passion lies in his genuine care for others. As the Hawaiian saying goes, Ku‘ia kahele aka na‘au ha‘aha‘a a humble walks carefully so as not to hurt others. Indeed, Xander exemplifies what it means to be a Maryknoll Spartan.

Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Award

HONORING A LIFETIME OF SERVICE TO MARYKNOLL SCHOOL WITH LUCILE MISTYSYN
Mrs. Lucile Smith ’37 Mistysyn is not just a name associated with Maryknoll School; she is a living testament to its values of service, dedication, and community. From her early days as a student to her enduring commitment as an alumna, Lucile’s journey intertwined deeply with the fabric of Maryknoll’s history.
Graduating in 1937 as part of the institution’s third graduating class, she carried with her a profound attachment to Maryknoll that would shape her life’s trajectory. Her post-graduation years were marked by a relentless spirit of service. Lucile actively engaged with Maryknoll’s Girl Scout troop, volunteering at lū'au and booths, embodying the school’s ethos of community engagement. Lucile married her husband, Michael, on January 22, 1944, and set the stage for a family life characterized by love, devotion, and an utnwavering commitment to their children’s education. As a mother, Lucile prioritized her children’s education, enrolling them in Maryknoll and actively supporting the school community. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom, as she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and played a pivotal role in reorganizing the alumni association.
Throughout the years, Lucile’s dedication remained steadfast. From volunteering at the front office to establishing the Lucile Mistysyn Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2020, her contributions to Maryknoll of have left an indelible mark on the institution and countless lives.
As Maryknoll continues to thrive and evolve, Lucile Mistysyn stands as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the power of dedication, generosity and love for one’s alma mater. We are honored to present the inaugural Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Award to Lucile for her years of commitment and service to Maryknoll. Henceforth, this prestigious accolade will bear her name, recognized as the Lucile Mistysyn Lifetime Achievement Award.
2023 Noblesse Oblige Award Honoree

MOST REVEREND CLARENCE “LARRY” SILVA BISHOP OF HONOLULU
With Hawaiian family roots in Hawai‘i that extend back to the monarchy of King Kalākaua, Bishop Clarence "Larry" Silva was the Vicar General of the Diocese of Oakland when Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to be the fifth Bishop of Honolulu, since the establishment of the diocese in 1941 and the eleventh since missionaries brought the faith here in 1827.
Ordained a bishop and installed as Bishop of Honolulu on July 21, 2005, at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawai‘i Catholics welcomed a man known to be a great priest, an experienced pastor, and a man of integrity. A parish priest for most of his ordained years, Bishop Silva came to inherit 66 island parishes, 28 mission churches and over 200,000 faithful.
Bishop Silva has engaged Hawai‘i’s Catholics on a journey to accomplish a mission, a mission to give "Witness to Jesus." Not just an episcopal motto, "Witness to Jesus" has become the Road Map by which the diocese operates and fuels our infrastructure. He chose this motto, he said, because he is "convinced that our faith and our Church will be renewed to the extent that all our programs, structures and institutions can be more focused on the fact that Jesus Christ is not just a figure of past history, but is alive and active among us now. I want to be his witness and encourage others to witness to Him as well."
