A Journey of Dedication

Carol Chong, the daughter of Filipino immigrants, grew up with a strong emphasis on the importance of education. Her father, a laborer with only a second-grade education, and her mother, a high school graduate who built a long career as a housekeeper in a Waikīkī hotel, were determined to provide a solid educational foundation for Chong and her sisters to ensure they did not face the same hardships.

Chong’s academic journey began at St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Kalihi, followed by Sacred Hearts Academy for high school. These institutions not only provided her with a robust academic education but also deepened her Catholic faith. Chong became an active member of the church, serving as a lector and participating in Campus Ministry.

HHSAA Division II Girls Basketball Champions

INTERVIEW WITH COACH THOMAS "CHICO" FURTADO: A SEASON OF SUCCESS AND UNITY

After a 46-year hiatus, the Maryknoll Spartans are champions once again. On February 8th, the Spartans clinched their first state title since 1978 by defeating Hanalani 46-33 in the Heide & Cook Division II Girls Basketball Championships held at Neal S. Blaisdell Arena.

This victory marked the Spartans' 15th consecutive win, culminating in an impressive 24-3 season record. The triumph also secured Maryknoll’s third overall state crown, solidifying their place in the history books.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: Coach Furtado, this season has been remarkable for your team. What do you believe was the key to your success?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado:

One of the keys to our success was recognizing that our team makeup was different this year compared to years past. Our coaching staff was able to create a team style that fit our player personnel perfectly. Our “run and gun” style, shooting a lot of 3’s, and getting everyone a lot of playing time kept the team focused and energized. It was definitely fun to watch.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: How did team camaraderie and unity play a role in this season's performance?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: Team camaraderie and unity were mainly due to the leadership provided by our veteran players. Isabella Arrisgado '24, Janelle Yap '24, Madison Faith Guillermo '24, and Hailey Marie Perez

'25 have been in the program for a while, and they took the team under their wing and kept everyone engaged. It’s easier to coach when your best players lead.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: Your team had an impressive pre-season schedule. How did that prepare you for the regular season?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: Traditionally, we always play a very competitive pre-season schedule, which prepares us for our regular season. Our December trip to Las Vegas also brought our team together. The girls gained a lot of confidence playing against mainland competition, which carried us through our undefeated season.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: You mentioned that this team was different from past teams. Can you elaborate on that?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: This team was different from past teams mainly because of our style of play. Never before have we depended on the perimeter 3-point shot as our main mode of scoring. We averaged 10 made 3’s per game, which was tops for the entire state. Utilizing our quickness defensively was also key.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: What was your main strategy going into this season?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: The main strategy was convincing the girls that any open shot is a good shot, especially at the 3-point line. I would get upset if someone passed up an open 3. The implementation

of the 35-second shot clock was also beneficial to our style of play. The girls bought into this quickly and enjoyed playing this way.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: Looking back, what were some standout moments for you this season?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: I was really impressed with the way we played against KS-Hawai‘i in the state semi-finals. That was a quality win against a very good team. They had two of the top scorers in the state, and we held them well below their average. And, obviously, winning the state championship was great. Just watching our girls celebrate all their hard work and effort was very gratifying.

Q: Chasen St. Onge: Lastly, what principles do you emphasize with your team to ensure such success?

A: Thomas "Chico" Furtado: I place a lot of emphasis on taking care of each other. Staying together, playing for each other, and team unity are huge with me. Sacrificing individual glory for team success is super important. Only then can we truly become champions. I believe this team accomplished that.

Congratulations to the 2023-2024 Maryknoll Spartans championship team and to Coach Thomas “Chico” Furtado who was inducted into Chaminade University Athletics Hall of Fame on February 24, 2024.

The Legacy of a Champion

AN INTERVIEW WITH A THREE-TIME STATE SOCCER CHAMPION

As the sun sets on her high school career, Rissalyn Hara ’24 looks back on a journey filled with hard work, determination, and unparalleled success. Recently graduated, she stands as a testament to what can be achieved through dedication and a love for the game of soccer. As a two-year captain of the PAC-5 team, she led her teammates to three consecutive state championships, an accomplishment that still feels surreal. In this exclusive interview, she shares her early days, influences, team dynamics, and what it truly means to be a champion.

Early Days and the Love for Soccer

Can you tell us a bit about your early days and how you got into soccer?

“I’ve played soccer since I was 5 years old. My parents always knew they wanted me to be active

and spend my energy somewhere productive. They put me in activities such as tumbling and ballet, but I was not too fond of it, so they put me in soccer and that’s what I’ve done ever since.”

From the moment she first kicked a ball, it was clear that soccer was more than just a pastime. It became a passion that would define her formative years and set the stage for her future successes.

Influences and Role Models

Who were your biggest influences or role models in soccer?

“My biggest influencer in soccer has always been my dad. He is someone who will help you get to your goals if you want to achieve them. He practiced with me outside of normal practices a lot when I was a kid and I credit him for the skills and mentality

I have developed. When I wasn’t at practice, he was always my coach. His drive and commitment to me and making me a better player have truly gotten me to where I am today.”

Her father’s dedication and support played a crucial role in shaping her into the player and leader she is today. His constant encouragement and rigorous practice sessions instilled in her a relentless drive and a winning mentality.

Influences and Role Models

How would you describe the current team dynamic?

“PAC-5 is different, and that’s something every school in the league knows. Our team dynamic is different than a lot of school soccer teams. Normally, you would be playing with your classmates, people you see every day. Those bonds and the chemistry

have already developed from being school friends. But for PAC-5, it is a challenge because everyone comes from different small private schools across the island. It takes a little while to feel things out, but we always come together.”

Despite the unique challenge of blending players from various schools, the PAC-5 team consistently overcame obstacles to build a cohesive and formidable unit. This ability to unify and work as a team was a key factor in their remarkable success.

Can you walk us through your role and responsibilities on the field?

“I’ve been a captain of this team for two years now. I’ve learned a lot about leadership through my role. On the field, my role is to not only lead by example and play to the best of my abilities but also uplift my teammates whenever they need it and give my team the motivation to continue playing their hardest.”

Rissalyn’s leadership extended beyond just her exceptional skills; it was about being the motivational backbone of the team, always ready to lift spirits and drive her teammates to push their limits.

Handling Pressure and Staying

Focused

How do you handle pressure and

maintain focus during crucial games?

“Sometimes the pressure of crucial games can get to you. But what I do, especially if I make a mistake, is tell myself something my dad always tells me. He tells me to have short-term memory and to shake off mistakes as soon as I make them. If you dwell on what you have done wrong, the mistakes pile up until it turns into a bad game.”

Her father’s advice of maintaining a short-term memory for mistakes proved invaluable. This mental fortitude allowed her to stay focused and perform under pressure, a crucial trait for any athlete striving for excellence.

How do you stay motivated and passionate about soccer?

“Playing soccer for over half my life can make it feel more like a job sometimes than a hobby. But I’ve managed to maintain my love for it through my relationships with my teammates, moments of adrenaline in games, and the excitement of getting better with each training.”

The bonds formed withteammates, the thrill of the game, and the continuous drive for improvement kept her passion for soccer alive, ensuring she never lost sight of why she loved the sport.

The Triumph of a 3-peat Championship

How did it feel being part of a 3-peat championship team?

“Being a part of PAC-5 has been a surreal experience. Many people cannot even call themselves a onetime state champion, but I have the honor of being a three-time state champion. Honestly, I don’t think those words have registered in my brain yet. I’ve loved every moment of being a part of this team. I have a legacy here now, and I was part of something special. Through the tough losses and exciting wins, every single minute of these past few seasons has been unforgettable. These memories are ones that I will keep in my heart forever.”

Winning three consecutive state championships is a feat few can claim. For Rissalyn, it’s not just about the titles; it’s about the journey, the camaraderie, and the legacy she leaves behind. As she steps into the next chapter of her life at Pacific University in Oregon, the lessons learned and the memories made on the soccer field will undoubtedly continue to inspire and drive her forward.

From Maryknoll to the Majors

JACOB REMILY MAKES HISTORY AS MARYKNOLL'S 1ST MLB DRAFT PICK

WRITTEN BY BLAINE GIER '88

Jacob Remily '24, a 6-foot-6 right handed pitcher from Maryknoll, made baseball history on July 16, 2024. At just 18, he was chosen by the Cleveland Guardians as the 475th pick in the 2024 MLB Draft, fulfilling a dream he first glimpsed at age five. He’s just the second Spartans player to be drafted alltime following Jordan Kurokawa, who was picked in the 28th round of the 2016 draft after playing at Hawai‘i-Hilo.

Growing up in Hawai‘i, Remily’s journey has been marked by dedication and perseverance. Despite never being the standout player, his relentless hard work paid off. After impressive performances in pre-draft workouts and the Draft League, he caught the Guardians' eye, making him the second-ever Maryknoll graduate to be drafted straight out of high school.

"I had my computer ready and phone charged," Remily said, recalling the suspenseful wait. "Hearing my name was surreal. I owe a lot to the Maryknoll program. I went in as a freshman who didn’t play intermediate baseball and coach Alaka‘i (Aglipay) took me in and took me under his wing and showed me the ropes. Everyone in that program is super supportive and want the best for you and hopefully it inspires other people to go and try their luck with Maryknoll and see what they can help you with.” Remily’s achievement highlights not only his personal triumph but also the strength of the Maryknoll program that nurtured him.

Empowering Tomorrow’s Leaders

In the vibrant mosaic of Hawai‘i's communities, the Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders (CTL) Fellows Program stands out as a beacon of empowerment and inspiration for the state’s future leaders. This yearlong advanced leadership initiative is designed to cultivate a new generation of state-level leaders who are both world-class and deeply rooted in local traditions and values. Each year, 20 exceptional high school seniors from both public and private schools are selected to represent the diversity of Hawai‘i's communities in this transformative program.

Kainalu “Kai” Barsana-Szewczyk a recent graduate of Maryknoll and the class of 2024 is, a distinguished graduate of the Center for Tomorrow’s Leaders, 2024 Fellows cohort. At 17, Kai's journey reflected a blend of rich cultural experiences and a profound commitment to service and leadership.

Born and partially raised in Hawai‘i, Kai moved to Singapore at the age of eight, spending six formative years abroad before returning home. This international experience broadened his horizons and instilled in him a unique perspective on leadership and community service. Kai's participation in four different sports and his regular involvement in community service events underscore his dedication to personal growth and his passion for giving back to the ‘Āina.

"I decided to join the Fellows program not only to grow as a leader but as a person as a whole," Kai shares. "This year, outside of the obvious goal

of becoming a better leader, I also seek to improve my social skills with new people and understand the differing perspectives of our society."

The CTL Fellows Program is structured around a rigorous leadership curriculum based on "The Leadership Challenge." Fellows engage in discussions on topics ranging from ethics to the local economy and participate in round table discussions with over 20 of Hawai‘i's foremost corporate, civic, and community leaders. This direct engagement with current leaders helps Fellows envision Hawai‘i's future and the type of leadership required to achieve it.

A cornerstone of the CTL Fellows Program is the hands-on community leadership project. Fellows work in teams to design and implement projects addressing some of Hawai‘i's most pressing issues. From improving police-community relations and promoting clean energy to enhancing economic resilience and combating kupuna (elder) loneliness, these projects have a tangible impact on the community. Each Fellow takes a lead role, applying the leadership lessons learned throughout the program.

Kai's project reflects his deep commitment to sustainability and self-reliance for Hawai‘i. "I truly hope for Hawai‘i to achieve a level of self-sustainability," he says. "Our state relies too heavily on the assistance of foreign powers, whether it be the tourists fueling our economy or the imported foods we buy without an alternate option."

The expectations for CTL Fellows are high. They must commit to making the program their priority extracurricular activity, attend biweekly sessions, engage in extensive project development, and adhere to rigorous standards of communication and conduct. Despite these demands, Kai has thrived, demonstrating a blend of character, critical thinking, leadership competence, and a passion for making a positive impact.

Reflecting on his journey, Kai acknowledges the influence of his mother. "Although it may sound cliché, I am heavily inspired by my mom. She exemplifies hard work against all odds, whether it be her gender, race, or position. She has always found ways to succeed not only for herself but for her family as well."

Upon graduation, Kai joined the Vanguard, CTL's premier alumni network of over 2,000 young leaders from across the state. This network provides ongoing opportunities for leadership development through special projects in civics, career, and community engagement.

Kai Barsana-Szewczyk's participation in the CTLFellows Program exemplifies the transformative power of this initiative. As he and his fellow cohort members prepare to take on the challenges of tomorrow, they carry forward the legacy of leadership, community service, and a deeprootedcommitment to the future of Hawai‘i.

On your mark, get set, Spartan Run is back!

The fifth annual Spartan Run was a thrilling spectacle that lit up our entire campus with its energy! This year, we embraced a whole new approach, uniting Spartans of all ages from our youngest pre-kindergarteners to our mighty senior class. Teaming up with the talented minds at Taj Clubhouse, owned by Maryknoll alumnae sisters, Theresa Wong ’68 and Jacqueline Chang ’71, we curated an unforgettable theme and design for this year’s event.

The Great Lawn buzzed with anticipation as students packed the balconies and lined the running course, ready to rally behind their peers. Following the PK-8th graders run, the high school levels took the stage, plunging headfirst into the first ever Spartan Run Challenge. From heart-pounding races to spirited lawn games, the atmosphere was electric. And who could forget the grand finale – a pulse-pounding, Mario Kart-inspired tricycle race that whipped around the Great Lawn, leaving laughter and excitement in its wake!

This year’s Spartan Run may have looked different, but its impact was monumental, bringing us closer as a community and leaving unforgettable memories for all who participated. Here’s to many more years of camaraderie, spirit, and unstoppable Spartan Pride!

Congratulations to our top fundraisers, Tia Hernandez ’27, Violet Jane Inayoshi ’36, Logan Lau ’35, and Alika Olds ’36. Our Spartan students displayed remarkable dedication, raising over $66,000!

Derrick Bulatao: From DJ to Mentor

THE EVOLUTION OF A CREATIVE VISIONARY

In the vibrant landscape of Hawai‘i’s entertainment scene, few names resonate as profoundly as Derrick Bulatao, better known to many as DJ Kutmaster Spaz. Hailing from Kane’ohe, his journey from a local DJ sensation to a multifaceted media producer and educator exemplifies resilience, creativity, and a commitment to excellence.

During the 90s, DJ Kutmaster Spaz carved his niche as a nationally recognized re-mixer and DJ. His exceptional mixing skills and innate showmanship propelled him onto the stages of some of the world's biggest venues. From touring with renowned

artists to gracing covers of esteemed magazines, his influence extended far beyond Hawai‘i’s shores.

One of his groundbreaking achievements was being honored as "Mixer of the Week" by Hitmakers magazine, a testament to his dedication in promoting new urban and dance music to Hawai‘i. But beneath the glamour of his DJ persona lies a story of overcoming adversity. Bulatao’s latest venture, his inspirational book titled “SPED to SUCCESS,” sheds light on his experiences of bullying and how those challenges fueled his journey to success.

BY

Today, Bulatao’s legacy extends beyond the turntables. In his fourth year as a Creative Media teacher at Maryknoll School, he assumed the role of department chair, spearheading the establishment of a Creative Media Pathway for high school students. His vision goes beyond traditional teaching methods, encompassing a holistic approach that fosters personal growth and character development.

In a candid conversation, Mr. Bulatao shares insights into his teaching philosophy, the unique aspects of his curriculum, and his plans for shaping the future of Maryknoll’s Creative Media Program.

Q: How do your classes/teaching reflect Maryknoll’s mission of being student-focused?

A: In my classes, I prioritize more than just delivering creative media content; I aim to instill in my student’s valuable life skills and habits for success. Whether it's cultivating character, fostering a champion mindset, or encouraging dedication to give their all, I emphasize the importance of holistic growth. By incorporating practical life lessons into every aspect of the curriculum, I create an environment where students feel seen, heard, and supported. Understanding that emotional well-being is crucial to academic success, I take the time to check in with my students, ensuring they feel safe and valued before delving into the day's lessons. This commitment to social and emotional learning sets my approach apart and aligns seamlessly with Maryknoll's mission of putting students first.

Q: Why is your curriculum different from other schools or programs?

A: What sets my curriculum apart is its foundation in my extensive industry experience and continuous adaptation to evolving trends. With over three decades in various media sectors, I've crafted a curriculum exclusively tailored to Maryknoll School, ensuring students receive cutting edge knowledge and skills. Beyond technical expertise, I prioritize individualized learning, catering to diverse learning styles and addressing each student's strengths and weaknesses. By staying abreast of industry shifts and regularly updating the curriculum, I empower students to thrive in an everchanging media landscape.

Q: How do you measure your success with your students?

A: My approach to measuring success extends beyond traditional assessments to encompass tangible growth and development. Through creative media assessments and collaborative projects, I gauge students' understanding and contribution, ensuring accountability and equitable participation. Moreover, the noticeable improvements in students' confidence and skills, such as in public speaking or

sound design, serve as compelling indicators of progress. By nurturing their talents and fostering a supportive learning environment, I witness firsthand the transformative impact on students' abilities and self-assurance.

Q: What makes your learning environment unique from others?

A: Central to my learning environment is the emphasis on creating a safe and inclusive space where students feel valued and respected. Through proactive conflict resolution and the implementation of clear classroom rules, I foster a sense of mutual respect and responsibility among students. Additionally, initiatives like the "Weather Check" system enable students to express their emotions openly, promoting self-awareness and empathy. By prioritizing social and emotional well-being alongside academic growth, I cultivate a learning environment that nurtures the whole student.

Q: How do you plan to build the Creative Media program?

A: Drawing upon my background in business marketing and management, I approach the expansion of the Creative Media program with a strategic vision and unwavering commitment. By fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, and student-centeredness among faculty, I aim to ensure alignment with Maryknoll's mission and goals. Through cohesive teamwork and a relentless dedication to student success, I envision a program that empowers students to amplify their voices and share their stories. With a focus on diversity, creativity, and excellence, I am determined to elevate Maryknoll as a premier destination for creative media education.

In Derrick Bulatao, Maryknoll School has found not just a teacher, but a mentor and visionary. His transformative approach to education reflects his unwavering commitment to empowering the next generation of creative leaders. As he continues to inspire and uplift, his impact resonates far beyond the confines of the classroom, shaping the future of Hawai‘i’s creative landscape.

Unveiling of Bachelot Hall

For nearly a century, this venerable structure has witnessed the ebb and flow of generations, serving as a nexus for artistic expression and cultural exchange. For the last 18 months Bachelot Hall has seen a transformatve journey through a $6M renovation project. On August 23, 2024, Bachelot Hall re-opened to the Sacred Heart Parish and Maryknoll School after 5 years of vacancy.

Constructed in 1923 to support the flourishing parish of Sacred Heart Church, Bachelot Hall pays homage to Father Alexis Bachelot, a pioneering figure in Hawai‘i's Catholic history. Born in France, Father Bachelot embarked on a journey of faith that led him to establish the first permanent Catholic mission in

Hawai‘i. Enduring the challenges of a new land and cultural unfamiliarity, he laid the groundwork for a thriving Catholic community, symbolized by the modest beginnings of Bachelot Hall.

Over the years, Bachelot Hall evolved from its initial function as a school annex to become a cherished space for artistic endeavors and communal gatherings. The original Maryknoll Sisters, imbued with dedication and resilience, made the hall their home as they nurtured the minds of young learners. From humble beginnings to a distinguished institution, Maryknoll School flourished under the watchful gaze of Bachelot Hall, embodying the spirit of innovation and excellence.

In 2001, Bachelot Hall received well-deserved recognition as it was added to the National Register of

Historic Places. Its architectural significance, characterized by Gothic Revival style, reflects a harmonious blend of tradition and modernity. As one of the few examples of Gothic Revival architecture in Hawaiian parishes, Bachelot Hall stands as a testament to ingenuity and craftsmanship, inspiring generations of students to explore their creative potential.

As Maryknoll School and Sacred Heart Church embarked on a joint journey of renovating Bachelot Hall, a new chapter in its storied history unfolds to the Parish and students. In the 2024-25 school year, Bachelot Hall will be a Performing Arts Center and Parish Hall serving as a catalyst for artistic expression, fostering collaboration and innovation across grade levels. Through comprehensive planning and community engagement,

the transformed Bachelot Hall emerges as a dynamic space for cultural enrichment and spiritual nourishment.

Rooted in faith and guided by a legacy of excellence, Bachelot Hall remains a beacon of hope and possibility. As students step into its hallowed halls, they embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth, where the arts serve as a pathway to enlightenment and fulfillment.

In celebrating the past and embracing the future, Bachelot Hall stands as a testament to the enduring power of creativity and community. As Maryknoll School looks ahead to celebrating our 100th anniversary in 1927, Bachelot Hall remains a steadfast symbol of inspiration and aspiration, igniting the flames of curiosity and imagination in all who enter its doors.

We express our heartfelt gratitude to all those who have generously supported the Bachelot Hall Capital Campaign. Your contributions have made a significant impact on our endeavor, and we are deeply appreciative of your support.

Hui Hawai‘i Takes Education into the Lo‘i

CULTIVATING SERVICE THROUGH TRADITION

Maryknoll dives into the many ideologies and practices of Hawaiian culture. The ethos of ‘A‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia—No task is too big when done together—thrives in every corner of their educational philosophy. Hui Hawai‘i along with Hawaiian Language and history, rooted in the spirit of community and service, has redefined how learning and giving back intersect.

In a remarkable initiative, Hui Hawai‘i has extended its educational reach into the lo‘i—a traditional taro patch— and brought the classroom into the field. This hands-on approach embodies the values instilled at Maryknoll, where students learn not only academic subjects but also the importance of service.

WRITTEN BY CHASEN ST. ONGE '09

By integrating real-world tasks like cultivating taro with their studies, students understand the significance of kuleana, or responsibility. The spirit of Noblesse Oblige, the idea that those with power have a duty to act with kindness and generosity, aligns seamlessly with Hawaiian values.

Our Maryknoll Hui Hawai‘i’s unique program exemplifies how education can foster a deep connection with both cultural heritage and community stewardship. By working together in the lo‘i at Papahana Kuaola, students learn the true meaning of responsibility and the profound impact of collaborative effort.

Middle-Level Day of Service

EMBRACING NOBLESSE OBLIGE

The Middle-Level Day of Service, held on Friday, February 23, 2024, was a resounding success, showcasing the Maryknoll student community's dedication to living out the school motto, "Noblesse Oblige: to whom much is given, much is expected." This event reaffirmed Maryknoll's commitment to providing students with opportunities to serve others and make a meaningful impact on the community.

Students engaged in Mālama Pono at five diverse sites across the area:

• Keawawa Wetlands in Hawai‘i Kai: Students worked as a united front to clear debris, pull weeds, and remove invasive plants, all in an effort to preserve the wetlands' natural habitat.

'08

• Catholic Charities of Hawai‘i in Mānoa: With care and creativity, students painted rocks with inspiring scripture and messages, decorating a new resting area for families in need at the Honolulu campus.

• Mānoa Heritage Center in Mānoa: Students tended to native and Polynesian-transported plants in a botanical garden, working with care and precision to maintain the garden's beauty.

• The University of Hawai‘i Ka Papa Lo'i 'O Kanewai in Mānoa: Students cleared the 'auwai (irrigation ditches) to the lo'i, fertilized the lo'i patch by pressing leaves into the base, and Mālama (cared for) the kalo with fresh mounts of rich soil.

• Maryknoll Grade School Campus and Sacred Heart Church: Students worked in small groups to beautify the church and school campus by picking up trash and performing other essential maintenance tasks.

The middle-level faculty at Maryknoll firmly believes that teaching children to serve others fosters connection and interdependence. This practice develops a sense of belonging and compassion that extends beyond physical labor to matters of the heart.

Reflecting on the day's achievements, it is clear that the spirit of service and community engagement is alive and thriving among Maryknoll students. Through their actions, they embodied the true essence of Noblesse Oblige, making a lasting impact on their surroundings and carrying forward the legacy of service and generosity.

Blast from the Past

MEMORIES OF EVELYN GIDDINGS AND STEVE MURIN

Jean Charlot traversed continents, imprinting his "Folk Art" onto the walls of churches, universities, and public edifices worldwide, from Mexico to the U.S. to Fiji. His lineage, a blend of French and Mexican heritage, intricately weaves through his creations. Raised in France, he found allure in the rustic charm of rural communities, while the ancient artifacts of pre-Hispanic Mexico ignited his artistic fervor.

Delving into Mayan and Aztec cultures, Charlot, both philosopher and artist, imbued his works with the primal essence of these civilizations. Upon arriving in Hawai‘i, he was

WRITTEN BY KATERI INGLIS (OCTOBER 2000)

captivated by the indigenous culture, akin to his earlier fascination with the folk traditions of rural France and Mexico's native peoples.

Charlot's ties to the Catholic Church ran deep, mirrored in the permanence of his art akin to "Buon Fresco." His faith extended beyond his craft, delving into the historical tapestry of Catholicism, particularly its artistic manifestations across Europe and Mexico.

Introduced to the University of Hawai‘i by Ben Norris in 1948, Charlot soon found himself ingrained in the institution's artistic fabric.

His relocation to Honolulu in 1949 saw him seamlessly integrating into the community, with Sacred Heart Church becoming a spiritual anchor for his family.

He and his family were living in faculty housing on campus, and Sacred Heart Church was a short walk away. Sacred Heart Church became the Charlot family’s parish and Charlot’s children attended Maryknoll elementary school.

He visited churches of various denominations and met William Young, a businessman active in the Catholic schools, particularly

Maryknoll. Charlot and Young became regular and frequent participants in the Maryknoll fund-raising efforts. Very soon Jean Charlot saw that the school needed the same creative attention he was offering to St. Francis Hospital.

Bill Young never took any credit for Charlot’s art contributions to Maryknoll. He was pleased, however, that it was through his friendship that Charlot began supporting Maryknoll Grade School with his art. Charlot's philanthropic spirit found expression through his art, notably at Maryknoll Grade School. His contributions, from ceramic tiles depicting Sacred Heart to frescoes illustrating Mexican folklore and biblical scenes, stand as testaments to his devotion.

In 1978, Charlot, with the help of his son Martin, created a second fresco for Maryknoll Grade School on the niche behind the drinking fountain. The most eye catching of Charlot’s contributions to Maryknoll is his sculpture Mary, Our Mother, an 18’ tall ceramic construction. Mary is seated on a simple kitchen chair holding her baby upright on her lap. The artist purposefully chose primary colors for his creation. This was a daunting undertaking, especially considering Charlot’s poor health.

nature of the material. Clay is almost a living element. Clay shrinks, clay dries, clay shatters, clay cannot be easily moved! Clay had to be rolled out, shaped, and assembled. The pieces had to be made to fit with allowances made for shrinkage in the drying period and even more in the firing process. Forms were made to drape great slabs of clay for Mary’s dress and robes. Charlot carved Mary’s face and hands and the face of the baby Jesus. The baby’s body wrapped in swaddling clothes was represented by a hand-thrown pot.

Evelyn Giddings was his devoted colleague and implementer. The difficulty in the plan was that Mary was to be a massive figure, seated on a chair, which was high up on a platform. Mary was not to be a figure painted on flat tiles. She was to be a sculpture.

Under the direction of Charlot, Giddings, a talented artist in her own right, and Isami Enomoto, an accomplished ceramist, began work on the project. One difficulty was the

At the same time, the chair designed by Charlot was to be faced with ceramic tiles, each a foot square. The tiles were made by Howard Ching and then fired by Steve Murin, “The Mad Potter of Palolo”, at his Salvation Army Kiln. The final tiles were then glazed and refired in the Raku style by Ching. Giddings, working with an experienced contractor who trusted her judgement, assembled the majestic Mary. The dedication of Mary was a moving and emotional affair. However, Jean Charlot was not there. He had died on March 20, 1979.

Though Charlot's physical presence has departed, his artistic legacy endures through lithographs adorning school walls and the timeless beauty of his creations. For the Maryknoll community, past, present, and future, Jean Charlot's masterpieces serve as poignant reminders of his boundless love, dedication, and artistic brilliance, perpetually inspiring faith, childhood wonder, and cultural reverence.

The Peter C.K. Fong Grade School Playground

OPEN FOR PRE-K TO 2ND GRADE

In the realm of education, the design and implementation of school playgrounds holds a profound significance. These spaces serve as more than just areas for children to play during breaks; they are environments meticulously crafted to foster holistic development, intertwining elements of play, physical activity, and learning. The completion of the Peter C.K. Fong grade school playground in February 2024 stands as a testament to the essential role of project goals in creating spaces where free and structured play converge to maximize learning, enjoyment, and well-being.

At the heart of this playground's design philosophy are three core objectives: the integration of free and structured play, the promotion of physical activity in a fun and engaging context, and the delivery of significant health and developmental benefits to students.

In today's digital age, combating sedentary lifestyles among children is paramount. The playground serves as a dynamic platform for promoting physical activity, transforming

exercise into an enjoyable endeavor. The inclusion of features like the Hanging Pod Link, Inverted Loop Ladder, and Double Swerve Slide entices children to engage in movement, agility, and coordination challenges. By embedding physical activity within the fabric of play, the playground instills lifelong habits of health and wellness in students.

The realization of the Peter C.K. Fong grade school playground would not have been possible without the steadfast support of the Maurice & Joanna Sullivan Family Foundation, alumni, and parents. Their dedication to education and child development has enabled the creation of a transformative space where children can thrive physically, intellectually, and emotionally.

The Peter C.K. Fong grade school playground exemplifies the transformative power of aligning project goals with the principles of holistic education. By prioritizing the fusion of free and structured play, promoting physical activity, and

conferring substantial health and developmental benefits, this playground transcends its role as a mere recreational space, becoming a cornerstone of student well-being and academic achievement. As educators and community stakeholders continue to invest in the design of school playgrounds, let us remain steadfast in our commitment to creating environments that nurture the whole child, fostering a generation of resilient, empowered, and healthy individuals.

Remembering Peter Fong

A LIFE OF SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP

In the quiet moments of reflection, we remember the life and legacy of Maryknoll School, Chairman, Peter Chew Kwong Fong, a man whose journey embodied the principles of service, leadership, and unwavering dedication. Born on October 28, 1955, as the second of seven children to Arthur Sung Kong Fong and Victoria Kam Yuk Chun, Peter's life was a testament to the profound impact one individual can have on their community and beyond. His passing on January 1, 2024, at the age of 68, marked the end of a remarkable chapter in Hawai‘i’s history.

Peter's academic prowess was evident from the outset. A distinguished graduate of the University of Hawai‘i, he earned his Bachelor of Business Administration with Honors, leaving an indelible mark as the Graduation Marshall and garnering recognition as the Outstanding Senior in Management. His academic journey continued at Boston College Law School, where he served as a member of the editorial staff of the Boston College International & Comparative Law

Review. His stellar achievements were underscored by accolades such as the Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award and features in Who's Who in America, the World, and American Law.

Throughout his illustrious career, Peter held various significant positions, each marked by his unwavering commitment to justice and community service. One of his most cherished roles was alongside his father, forming and running the law firm of Fong & Fong for over 35 years. His contributions extended beyond the legal realm, serving as President/CEO and Director of Chun Kim Chow, Ltd., and as a Honolulu District/Family Court per diem judge for over three decades. His dedication to education and community service culminated in his role as Chairman of the Board at Maryknoll School, where he was honored with the 2023 Noblesse Oblige Award.

Peter's commitment to service knew no bounds. From his roles as President and Chairman of the Board at Palolo Chinese Home to his involvement with numerous

committees and organizations, Peter's impact reverberated throughout the community. A devout Catholic, he cherished his audience with Pope Benedict at the Vatican, a testament to his unwavering faith and commitment to his beliefs.

As we bid farewell to Peter Fong, we remember a man who epitomized the values of compassion, integrity, and selflessness. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those he touched, from his family and friends to the countless lives he influenced through his tireless advocacy and dedication to service. Though his laughter may have ceased, and his presence may be missed, his spirit continues to inspire us to strive for a better tomorrow.

In the words of those who knew him best, Peter Fong was more than an exceptional son, brother, uncle, and community member—he was a beacon of hope, a champion of justice, and a true servant-leader. As we honor his memory, let us carry forward his legacy of service and compassion, ensuring that his impact endures for generations to come.

Denby Kei Fukuda Rall: Living the Maryknoll Legacy

DR. DENBY K. F. RALL, AU.D. '99 EMBARKS ON LEADERSHIP AS MARYKNOLL ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT

Denby Kei Fukuda Rall, a distinguished member of Maryknoll's Class of 1999, has woven her life's journey with the enduring principles instilled by her alma mater. Her Maryknoll story began in 1985, a bright-eyed pre-kindergartener following in the footsteps of her mother, Donna Omura Fukuda, herself a proud graduate of Maryknoll in 1970. Surrounded by a family deeply rooted in the Spartan tradition, Denby and her sister Dana Fukuda Rauckhorst embraced every facet of Maryknoll life—academics, athletics, and the profound sense of community that defines the school.

From early on, Denby's spirit and drive shone brightly. In fourth grade, she proudly joined the Junior Spartan Pep Squad, infusing the campus with infectious energy. Her athletic interest led her to pursue in both volleyball and basketball, where she played with unwavering dedication and leadership. Denby's crowning achievement came in 1998 when she helped Maryknoll's basketball team to its first division one State Championship Tournament in over a decade, leaving an indelible mark on Spartan sports history.

Beyond athletics, Denby's leadership extended into student government, where she served as Student Body Vice President in her

senior year. Known for her welcoming demeanor and commitment to her peers, Denby was a central figure in the close-knit Class of 1999, earning accolades such as the Maryknoll Cup and recognition as a Female Spartan Athlete.

Denby's journey continued beyond Maryknoll's halls as she pursued higher education and professional excellence. She studied Speech Pathology and Audiology, earning her Bachelor of Science from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa in 2004 and completing her Doctorate of Audiology (AuD) at Central Michigan University in 2008. Her career path led her to Tripler Army Medical Center, where she serves as Chief of Audiology, dedicating herself to "serve those who serve."

Embracing the legacy of Noblesse Oblige, Denby and her husband, Hendrik "Henni" Rall, have chosen to pass on the values of Maryknoll to their three sons—Donn, Dax, and Drake Rall—who are currently following in their mother's footsteps at Maryknoll. This third generation of Omura descendants reaffirms the deep-rooted trust and loyalty that families like the Fukudas and Ralls have placed in Maryknoll over the years.

Denby's commitment to her alma mater extends into leadership roles within the Maryknoll community. She served on the Maryknoll Board of Directors from 2019 to 2023 and currently leads as President of the Maryknoll Alumni Association. In her role, Denby fosters alumni connections, advocates for accountability, social justice, and inclusivity, and strengthens bonds between current students and alumni.

As Maryknoll approaches its Centennial anniversary, Denby K.F. Rall stands as a testament to the enduring values and spirit of Maryknoll School—an institution that continues to shape generations of leaders who embody the ideals of Noblesse Oblige.

Denby wishes to welcome alumni, future alumni, along with their friends and families back home to Maryknoll.

This profile celebrates Denby Kei Fukuda Rall's lifelong connection to Maryknoll and highlights her contributions as a leader and role model within the Spartan community.

DEAREST ALUMNAE OF 1937 TO OUR FUTURE GRADUATING CLASS OF 2037

Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn

A LIFETIME OF DEDICATION TO MARYKNOLL

WRITTEN BY OUIDA “YVONNE” MORRIS ‘63

Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn, born on February 9, 1920, is not just a name associated with Maryknoll School; she is a living testament to its values of service, dedication, and community. From her early days as a student to her enduring commitment as an alumna, Lucile's journey intertwined deeply with the fabric of Maryknoll's history.

Lucile's connection with Maryknoll began in the 8th grade in 1932, a mere five years after the school's establishment. Graduating in 1937 as part of the institution's third graduating class, she carried with her a profound attachment to Maryknoll that would shape her life's trajectory.

Her post-graduation years were marked by a relentless spirit

of service. Lucile engaged actively with Maryknoll’s Girl Scout troop, volunteering at lū‘au and booths, embodying the school's ethos of community engagement. Furthering her education, she graduated from Sullivan's Commercial School in 1939, equipped with skills that would serve her well in her future endeavors.

Lucile's journey took her beyond the shores of Hawai‘i, where she embarked on her first mainland trip, caring for two young children aboard the Lurline. Her professional path led her from the basement to the office at Liberty House, showcasing her dedication and diligence.

It was at a Sodality Dance, a USO event for Holy Name members from

Fort Shafter, where Lucile met her husband (Michael), marking the beginning of a new chapter. Their marriage on January 22, 1944, at Sacred Heart Church, set the stage for a family life characterized by love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to their children's education. Michael passed away in 1991.

As a mother, Lucile prioritized her children's education, enrolling them in Maryknoll and actively supporting the school community. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom, as she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and played a pivotal role in reorganizing the alumni association.

Throughout the years, Lucile's dedication remained steadfast. From volunteering at the front office to establishing the Lucile Mistysyn Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2020, her contributions to Maryknoll have left an indelible mark on the institution and countless lives.

Her involvement in the Noblesse Oblige Society underscores her commitment to ensuring Maryknoll's legacy endures for future generations. Lucile's story epitomizes the essence of Maryknoll's mission, embodying the values of service, community, and lifelong learning.

As Maryknoll continues to thrive and evolve, Lucile Mistysyn stands as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the power of dedication, generosity, and love for one's alma mater.

On October 19, 2024, Lucile will be honored with the inaugural Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Award. Henceforth, this prestigious accolade will bear her name, recognized as the Lucile Mistysyn Lifetime Achievement Award.

A Century Apart, Forever Connected: Honoring our alumna from 1937, Lucile Mistysyn, connecting with the Olds ‘Ohana and Tai Olds, class of 2037.

ALUMNI HIGHLIGHT Mailani Maikainai ‘98

'98 RAUCKHORST AND CHASEN ST. ONGE '09

In the tapestry of Maryknoll School's alumni, Mailani Maikainai, Class of 1998, emerges as a vibrant thread intricately woven with her deeprooted love for Hawaiian culture and unwavering faith. Her journey, which she affectionately calls her second home, began years ago and continues to resonate profoundly within the Maryknoll community.

Recently honored as the keynote speaker for the Class of 2024, Mailani's connection to Maryknoll runs deep. Her niece, Hayley Smith '24, graduating this year, continues a cherished family legacy that includes Mailani's mother, Sylvia Makainai ‘76, and her sister, SyRina Smith ‘99. Mailani's impact extends beyond familial ties; her accolades as a Nā Hōkū Hanohano awardwinning vocalist and her role in the popular group Keahiwai underscore her success in perpetuating Hawaiian music and culture. She shared her

favorite ‘Olele No’eau during her speech, "Mai maka‘u i ka hana, maka‘u i ka moloā—Do not fear work, fear laziness," a motto that was her senior quote and continues to inspire others to be stewards of their world. Her time at Maryknoll was marked by active involvement in Glee Club, Ecology, Senate, Hula, and athletics, where her classmates recall her infectious laughter and athletic prowess. Beyond these activities, Mailani's passion for music led her to compose the heartfelt song "Pu‘u Melia," weaving Mo‘olelo (stories) into its creation to honor the humbleness of giving back. During her address, Mailani eloquently linked Maryknoll's motto, Noblesse Oblige, to Hawaiian values of Kuleana (responsibility), emphasizing the legacy of the Maryknoll Sisters and the sacrifices of her parents to provide a Catholic education. She spoke fondly of the faculty and staff who shaped her

life, underscoring the school's impact in fostering her strong faith and family values. As part of the graduation festivities, Mailani observed the Class of 2024 singing "Pu‘u Melia," affectionately calling them "Keiki Ali‘i," a term that reflects their noble potential. She encouraged them to cherish their time together, imparting a poignant quote that resonated with all in attendance: "You are each a budding flower in the lei of Maryknoll." Mailani's journey exemplifies the transformative power of a Maryknoll education, embodying the spirit of Noblesse Oblige and inspiring future generations to make a positive difference in the world. Her enduring love for God and family serves as a testament to the school's mission, reminding us all of the call to serve and lead with compassion. Through her music and storytelling, Mailani has left an indelible mark on Maryknoll, her legacy echoing through its halls through Mele (music) and perpetuating the school's cherished traditions. Mailani's story serves as a testament to the interconnectedness of the Maryknoll family, each a vital part of a larger legacy rooted in faith, service, and community. Mailani's story launches our Alumni section, uniting us all through our commitment to Noblesse Oblige. Like a lei, the legacy of our school family binds us together, nurturing and cultivating our role as agents of change in the world. Mahalo, Mailani, for reminding us of the profound privilege and responsibility inherent in the Maryknoll journey. Noblesse Oblige indeed: to whom much is given, much is expected.

Honoring My Father Gordon Chun

Gordon Chun, our proud Spartan of Class of 1942, still treasures receiving his “Knoller” in the mail. Of all the mail that he receives, keeping anything from Maryknoll within reach is a priority for him! I believe it is a warm comfort for him. Being one of our eldest alumni, Gordon celebrated his 100th birthday this year!

My mother Mildred Tam Chun, who has since passed, also graduated from Maryknoll, Class of 1943. Both of my parents totally embraced the gift of their fine education at Maryknoll.

When asked what his favorite memories of Maryknoll were, Gordon replied, “We had a co-ed school back then! We were taught by all nuns. I liked the Maryknoll nuns very much. Maryknoll was and is a very good school!” Both my parents developed lifelong friendships with mentors like Brother Venard and many Sisters & Priests. They were both baptized Catholic at Sacred Heart Church.

After my parents graduated from Maryknoll, Gordon worked at Pearl Harbor as an apprentice during World War II. Mildred worked at the

Immigration Center, until they got married. My father worked very hard in those days as an accountant, realtor, and insurance salesman, so that their four children could attend Catholic schools. My sister and I both attended Maryknoll from kindergarten through grade 12 and graduated from Maryknoll; Carolyn Chun '76 Murata and myself, Yvonne Chun '70 Izumi. My older brothers, Stephen and Vernon Chun also had their roots at Maryknoll from kindergarten through 8th grade and then went on to St. Louis where they graduated.

CLASS OF 1942
WRITTEN BY YVONNE CHUN '70 IZUMI

Gordon and Millie were very dedicated volunteers. Gordon remembers helping out at the carnival back in the day. I remember riding the giant ferris wheel with my dad at Maryknoll, right there in the grade school playground while my mom helped the parish ladies whip up ‘ono malasadas in Bachelot Hall!

My father Gordon is very appreciative of Maryknoll and how the alumni are always included in events. When he was able, I would attend the Maryknoll lū‘au with him and have the joy of meeting some of his classmates from 1942! It was a blessing for him to attend the Baccalaureate Mass and luncheon for his Class’ 70th Year Jubilarian Celebration.

Thank you to Maryknoll School and Sacred Heart Church for being an important part of our family’s life!

Happy 100th Birthday Gordon Chun!!!

We Love You And God Bless You Always!

Alumni Week ‘24

ALUMNI LU ‘ AU

The Maryknoll alumni lū‘au is a cherished tradition that celebrates our graduates in 5- and 10-year increments. This year, we proudly honored the jubilarian class of 1974 as they marked their incredible 50th reunion milestone. The event was particularly memorable, with a dedicated focus on every detail, from the centerpiece and stage to our vibrant lei bar.

We welcomed over 350 attendees, a testament to the enduring spirit of our alumni community. The highlight of the evening included performances by Mailani Makainai ’98 and the delightful Nina Keali'iawahamana Rapozo '54 sharing the stage. The Omura ‘ohana led the organization with precision, coordinating numerous alumni businesses to participate.

The festivities were enriched by culinary delights, expertly prepared by Wil Cordes ’88 of Forty Niner Restaurant, complemented by treats from Sung Chong Company, artfully presented within the pū‘olo centerpiece.

This year's lū‘au was a resounding success, blending nostalgia with new memories, and reaffirming the bond that defines our Maryknoll ‘ohana.

2024 ALUMNI VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT

This year marked our inaugural annual volleyball tournament, bringing together 30 alumni for a lively competition featuring four teams. MEMORIAL BOWL-A-RAMA TOURNAMENT

We packed Aiea Bowl with 10 lanes and teams of 4-6 players! This year's champions are none other than Michael Kaufmann ’99 and our three-time defending female champion, Maddi Agustin ’23. It was a spirited and competitive event, filled with families and alumni networking and enjoying each other's company. We eagerly anticipate our next tournament this winter, continuing the tradition that Mr. Kaufmann himself envisioned, a gathering for family and friends.

ALUMNI + FRIENDS PAU HANA

Maryknoll alumni and their families gathered for Spartan fellowship at Growler Hawai‘i, a local 'ohana-owned business in Kapahulu, just a short distance from Waikīkī Beach. Known for its exceptional array of craft and macro beers, spirits, cocktails, and delicious cuisine, Growler Hawai‘i has been a gracious host to our Maryknoll community. We appreciate their ongoing support and eagerly anticipate future gatherings for more pau hana sessions!

Class Notes

My name is Robert Sanchez. I attended Maryknoll High School from 1981 - 1985. It was the best time in my life. I graduated with my class in 1985.

I was born on a military base in 1967, as my father was active duty military in the Vietnam War in 1967. He met my mother, a 1964 Maryknoll High School graduate, as his shipmate was related to her cousin.

After 1968, my father was placed on Active Reserve Military status and we moved from California to Honolulu, Hawai‘i where my mom was originally from. My father applied for the Honolulu Police Department and became a police officer. We moved to Wai‘anae in 1969 and lived there most of my high school years.

My mother, Georgette Chong Tim '64 Sanchez, moved our family to Wai‘anae where her father lived. Wai‘anae is pretty far from Maryknoll and I used to catch the bus initially until I learned to drive.

I was at St. Joseph's High School when I applied to Maryknoll High School, Damien and St. Louis High School. In private school, you have to attend the summer session prior to the freshman year and I was at St. Louis High School for a whole day before I moved to Damien. I was at Damien High School the entire summer session but moved to Maryknoll High School for my freshman year.

As I did not attend the Maryknoll grade school or summer session, I was kind of out of place. The first person I met was Mily Loo '85 in Rogers Hall. She is one of my best friends until today and one of 3 Maryknoll godparents to my children. I went to Winterball freshman year with Rhonda Phillips '85. Best times of my life going to Maryknoll. I graduated in 1985 with my class and attended everything if offered, proms, etc.

Throughout my high school years I lived off and on in Wai‘anae but spent most of my time split between Keith Gomes '85 house and Clinton Mau '85's apartment. Wai‘anae is very far, my friends, so as I went to high school, I worked all kinds of jobs and instead of trying to drive home. I slept under the bridge by another Maryknoll High School classmate, Norman Abe '85's house. Keith Gomes' mom Renee Gomes, Norman Abe's mom, or Clinton Mau's mom fed me and kept me alive most times.

I graduated high school and went to all the grad parties celebrating my classmates' accomplishments, but also feeling that support and kinship slipping away as one by one my friends continued their journeys in college and universities on the mainland.

REFLECTIONS FROM AN ALUMNUS: VOICES OF OUR LEGACY

From Waianae to Somewhere in the World. Robert Sanchez '85

My friends who graduated from Maryknoll went with me to Leeward Community College were Norman Abe, Norman Koenig '85, and Renee Chinen '85. We went to college and would hang out at The Circle. It was there that I saw the Space Shuttle explode.

Norman Abe and I moved to University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa and we both graduated with our Bachelor's Degrees. My friend Renee Chinen got married and Norman Koenig left to the mainland to continue his journey. Richard Jang '85 joined the Honolulu Police Department.

In 1997, I was working as a probation officer for the State of Hawai‘i and I reconnected with Stacey Luke '85 and Mily Loo. In 2013, Stacey Luke, Mily Loo and Keith Gomes were at my babies' baptism. In 2022, I retired from the State of Hawai‘i after 27 years and six months of service and moved overseas in a world wide capacity.

I wanted to say to my classmates, "I love you". Thank you for being there for me whether you knew it or not. What I wanted to say to the current students at Maryknoll, "Enjoy everything high school has to offer. Life is hard but your classmates will be a shoulder of support when they don't even know it. After you graduate you may miss your friends and all the experiences you shared, don't worry, Maryknoll is a family and with all families they will be there for you whenever you need."

How do I know this?

I am currently not in Hawai‘i. I'm not even in the United States of America. I am somewhere in the world.

But my Maryknoll friends are family and are always on my mind. When I get to Hawai‘i I am eating lunch Doug Shultz '85 at his house in Hawai‘i Kai or at Keith Gomes' mom's party with his family or eating dinner with Mily Loo or Stacey Luke at their house. I feel just like I am where I belong. I love them all with all my heart.

I am grateful to Maryknoll High School for taking me from Wai‘anae to my current position in this wide open world. Be well and happy, my Maryknoll family.

I love you all.

Sincerely,

MOST REVEREND CLARENCE “LARRY” SILVA, BISHOP OF HONOLULU

With Hawaiian family roots in Hawai‘i that extend back to the monarchy of King Kalākaua, Bishop Clarence "Larry" Silva was the Vicar General of the Diocese of Oakland when Pope Benedict XVI appointed him to be the fifth Bishop of Honolulu, since the establishment of the diocese in 1941 and the eleventh since missionaries brought the faith here in 1827.

Ordained a bishop and installed as Bishop of Honolulu on July 21, 2005, at the Neal Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawai‘i Catholics welcomed a man known to be a great priest, an experienced pastor, and a man of integrity. A parish priest for most of his ordained years, Bishop Silva came to inherit 66 island parishes, 28 mission churches and over 200,000 faithful.

Bishop Silva has engaged Hawai‘i's Catholics on a journey to accomplish a mission, a mission to give "Witness to Jesus." Not just an episcopal motto, "Witness to Jesus" has become the Road Map by which the diocese operates and fuels our infrastructure. He chose this motto, he said, because he is "convinced that our faith and our Church will be renewed to the extent that all our programs, structures and institutions can be more focused on the fact that Jesus Christ is not just a figure of past history, but is alive and active among us now. I want to be his witness and encourage others to witness to Him as well."

2024 Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Honoree

MRS. LUCILE SMITH '37 MISTYSYN

Mrs. Lucile Smith '37 Mistysyn is not just a name associated with Maryknoll School; she is a living testament to its values of service, dedication, and community. From her early days as a student to her enduring commitment as an alumna, Lucile’s journey intertwined deeply with the fabric of Maryknoll’s history.

Graduating in 1937 as part of the institution’s third graduating class, she carried with her a profound attachment to Maryknoll that would shape her life’s trajectory. Her post-graduation years were marked by a relentless spirit of service. Lucile actively engaged with Maryknoll’s Girl Scout troop, volunteering at lū‘au and booths, embodying the school’s ethos of community engagement. Lucile married her husband, Michael, on January 22, 1944, and set the stage for a family life characterized by love, devotion, and an unwavering commitment to their children’s education. As a mother, Lucile prioritized her children’s education, enrolling them in Maryknoll and actively supporting the school community. Her involvement extended beyond the classroom, as she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and played a pivotal role in reorganizing the alumni association.

Throughout the years, Lucile’s dedication remained steadfast. From volunteering at the front office to establishing the Lucile Mistysyn Endowed Scholarship Fund in 2020, her contributions to Maryknoll of have left an indelible mark on the institution and countless lives.

As Maryknoll continues to thrive and evolve, Lucile Mistysyn stands as a beacon of inspiration, reminding us all of the power of dedication, generosity and love for one’s alma mater. We are honored to present the inaugural Maryknoll School Lifetime Achievement Award to Lucile for her years of commitment and service to Maryknoll.

CLASS OF 2024

Congratulations to Maryknoll’s Class of 2024! The graduation festivities began on the morning of June 6, 2024, with the annual Baccalaureate Mass, where family and friends gathered to bless the graduating class. Families of students in the Maroon & Gold Society received a special gift in recognition of their children’s attendance at Maryknoll from Kindergarten through 12th grade, marking 13 years of dedication to the school.

That evening, the celebration continued with Class Night, a beloved tradition honoring seniors and their accomplishments. Held at the historic Hawaii Theater, the event featured a gorgeous ambience as Maryknoll faculty and staff presented class awards and oversaw the memorable candlelight ceremony. During this ceremony, graduates passed the Maryknoll “torch” to the incoming senior class, symbolizing the continuation of the school’s legacy.

The following day, on June 7, 2024, seniors gathered at Neal S. Blaisdell Concert Hall for Maryknoll’s 90th Annual Commencement. After the ceremony, the newest alumni were adorned with lei and embraced by their families and friends, celebrating their achievements and the end of their high school journey. The festivities concluded with Project Graduation, giving the Class of 2024 one final night to celebrate together as Spartans.
