75th Anniversary Celebration Begins with Founders Day Mass

The annual Founders Week celebration marked the official beginning of the yearlong celebration of Maryknoll Schoolís 75th anniversary.

The weekís activities included Mass for grades 5 through 7 at Sacred Heart Church, and Mass at St. Augustine Church for grades 8 through 12, which was followed by a luncheon at Seafood Village for alumni and special guests of Maryknoll School. On campus, the students were served ice cream ñ a contemporary tradition that has become a part of campus celebrations, as ice cream was a favorite treat of the Maryknoll Sisters.

Founders Week is celebrated each year to commemorate the February 14, 1920 date when Mary Joseph ìMollieî Rogers and the Teresians received canonical recognition as The Foreign Mission Sisters of St. Dominic ñ later changed to the Maryknoll Sisters of St. Dominic.

The homily by Fr. Gary Secor í69 challenged students (ìthe shootsî) to honor and learn from alumni (ìthe rootsî) so that someday they can themselves give back (ìbear fruitî) to Maryknoll and the greater community.

Agnes Sills Cordeiro í37 and Lucile Smith Mistysyn í37 were among the special guests at the luncheon during Founders Week. Aspecial 75th anniversary banner was created to hang in Sacred Heart Church during the middle schoolís Founders Week Mass.

Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo presided over Mass for the high school students and eighth graders. Sixth grader Kaila Au receives communion during Founders Week Mass at Sacred Heart Church.

Sr. Dolores Rosso and Br. Venard Ruane enjoy a delicious lunch at Seafood Village after attending Founders Week Mass at St. Augustine Church.
