Howie Powers FriendsChair of Foundation Academies

It is an honor to present the Friends of Foundation Academies 2021-2022 Annual Report, which celebrates our shared impact.

FA remains the highest-performing school in Trenton, NJ and in the top 8% of all NJ public schools. FA serves nearly 10% of Trenton’s student population. FA is ready to serve more students and families. We are committed to our city and believe that every child, not just the 500 children on our waiting lists, deserves a K-12 education that equips and empowers them to lead purpose-filled lives.

▪ Began an exciting next chapter by welcoming incoming CEO, Sheria McRae, and a newly-formed Executive Team

The Friends of FA are celebrating its 12th year of supporting the work of FA and YOU helped make the 2021-2022 school year the best yet.

At FA, we see our children and their value, and we foster an environment that equips and empowers them with the tools and confidence to succeed. As you will read in the following pages, this past year, we:

▪ Awarded our second class of Round Table scholarships to four remarkable students

Thank you for your ongoing belief in the power of your impact and the potential of our Instudents.community,

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

4 THE FRIENDS OF FOUNDATION ACADEMIES

Karen Andrade-Mims

The Friends of FA Board works with the Chief Executive Officer, Foundation Academies Leadership, students, alumni, and the Foundation Academies Board of Trustees (FABOT) to understand the school’s strategic vision and most pressing needs and then accepts and approves charitable donations for impactful grants to the school community.

Streicher*

The Friends of Foundation Academies (Friends of FA), a separate 501c3 nonprofit organization, was founded in 2010 to encourage community support of Foundation Academies, a public K-12 charter school in Trenton, NJ.

The Friends of Foundation Academies supports, enhances, and promotes the work of FA by raising funds and delivering services, programs, and partnerships that equitably serve the best interests of our school community. As a public charter school, FA receives approximately 75 percent of the per-student dollar allocation that the district schools receive. Donations to the Friends help to bridge that gap by enriching our student experiences, developing and retaining faculty, and responding to the needs of our school

2021-22 BOARD

The Friends of FA Leadership Council involves the broader community in the critical work of our schools. The council is comprised of professionals across sectors, ages, and perspectives. This group meets throughout the year to discuss and support our city, our advancement initiatives, and our innovative work in K-12 public education.

Your support helps us to enrich student experiences, keep alumni successfully on their postsecondary paths, build and equip classrooms, and recruit and support our incredible faculty.

FINANCIAL HEALTH

The Friends of Foundation Academies is proud to report another year of strong support from our amazing donors. The Friends and our schools raised $468,328 in gifts and grants from individuals, corporations, and foundations.

Under NJ law, charter schools may not build facilities with public funds. To expand and improve our high school facilities, the Friends of Foundation Academies purchased the neighboring vacant Holy Cross rectory site and spent the better part of the 2018-19 school year constructing a new 10,217 square foot addition in the city’s south ward. The existing school building received a complete HVAC, electrical, and interior upgrade. The Friends of FA proudly owns the high school campus and leases it back to the school.

My journey has reflected the growth of FA itself – and I am so excited about moving our schools and our community forward. Together with my new Executive Team, school leaders, faculty, staff – and supporters like you! – we are making a promise to each of our families and Atscholars.Foundation

ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS

Graig Weiss, our CEO and FAmily member of 13 years, served our school community with integrity, humility, and unwavering focus on our children. Our Boards, Leadership Council, and entire school community express our deepest appreciation and celebration of Graig’s lasting contributions. It is much in thanks to Mr. Weiss that we are so well-positioned for a bright future at FA.

We are proud to be the largest and highest-ranking K-12 free public charter school in Trenton, New Jersey. Founded in 2007 as a middle school, Foundation Academies began under the vision of a world where every child, irrespective of race, gender, academic ability, or socioeconomic background, has access to a high-quality public education — and we continue to work relentlessly to live up to this promise. We now serve more than 1,000 students K-12, operating with four schools on two campuses, and all FA students are admitted by lottery at random. Our consistently high ranking among all public schools in New Jersey and eight consecutive years of 100% college acceptance demonstrates that with the support of dedicated teachers and staff, every student can succeed in a great public school.

THANK YOU, MR. WEISS!

FA COLLEGIATE CLASS OF 2022

COLLEGE BOUND:

On June 8, 2022, the annual Senior Signing Day celebrated our graduating seniors who made the commitment to attend a college, university, community college, a training program, or the military after graduation. Gathering in person with faculty, students, families and friends after two years of pandemic restrictions made this event extra-special. Fourteen local businesses and individual donors sponsored this special FAmily gathering. A special shout-out to CBIZ Borden Perlman for serving as our lead sponsor.

“Reflecting on my high school years, I realized that Foundation helped me grow in many ways. I am graduating with a better version of myself… My identity is what I make of the journey. I am proud to say I am a woman who uses her experiences in order to grow.”

The Foundation Academy Collegiate Class of 2022 consists of 70 talented students. Every one of our graduating seniors was accepted into a college or university, including New Jersey Institute of Technology, Howard University, The Juilliard School, Harvard University, The College of New Jersey, and Mercer County Community College, among others. Future plans include careers in engineering, business, computer science, nursing, auto mechanics, and psychology.

■ Music is a vital part of FA’s curriculum, with music club in primary school and string study introduced in upper grades. Because of donor support, all FA students learned to play a string instrument of their choosing, from the violin and viola to upright bass and cello. In addition to building musical skills, our scholars learn motivation, responsibility, teamwork and perseverance.

■ Thanks to generous grants from Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Investors Bank, and the Roma Bank Community Foundation, every scholar across grades K-8 participated in weekly co-curricular clubs during the school day. Local community partners led clubs, including Amerikick Princeton, Hey Black Dad, Be Drumm Music, and Agape Healing & Yoga Wellness Center.

■ Arts education is proven to boost student self-confidence, enhance interpersonal skills, improve cognition, and increase standardized test scores. A generous grant from the Arts & Letters Foundation launched a pilot visual arts program with Village Arts, Inc. at Foundation Academy Primary School. Thanks to their support, all students in grades K-2 experienced diverse and engaging art lessons as part of our school design.

STUDENT ENRICHMENT

HERE ARE A FEW OF THE OPPORTUNITIES MADE POSSIBLE WITH THE SUPPORT OF OUR DONORS:

■ We continued to expose our Intermediate and Middle School scholars to STEM programming through support from Janssen Pharmaceuticals and Bristol Myers Squibb Foundation. Sessions were facilitated by community partners like Mad Science New Jersey and Likeable STEM.

“We are able to actualize our FA Enrichment mission which is to create intentional learning experiences and opportunities that will empower our scholars to cultivate their passions and equip them to lead purpose-driven lives.”

■ Support from donors helped FA Collegiate UNITY Club bridge the language and culture gap between teachers and parents. UNITY members assisted with calls home to families, helped teachers during parent conferences, interpreted at FA family events, and found ways to celebrate Latino culture.

CORIN RUSHING-FRANCIS, FA DIRECTOR OF ENRICHMENT

Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context. The Friends of FA works with leaders, teachers, and students to define and make possible enrichment activities to help our scholars actualize their own power and potential.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2021-22 FRIENDS OF FOUNDATION ACADEMIES KNIGHT FUND

■ Public school teaching applications have been slipping for at least a decade in NJ. The coronavirus pandemic has exacerbated the downward trend, resulting in administrators everywhere scrambling to cover vacant positions. Support from the Friends of FA helped us bolster recruiting strategies targeting qualified candidates through investments in promotion and marketing.

■ Ongoing staff appreciation is pivotal to teacher morale and retention. Donor support helped to make teacher and staff appreciation initiatives available in all schools. This included teacher appreciation days, staff recognition events, surprise care packages and more.

For the fifth consecutive year, FA marked the 100th day of the school year with a special celebration. Though it was a chilly day (10 ºF), male leaders from our community representing nonprofits, businesses, government agencies, the police and fire departments, fraternities, and our Board of Directors, came out to lend their support.

Foundation Academies is part of the fabric of a vibrant community. We actively prepare our students to be engaged citizens and civic leaders, and enthusiastic volunteers from our community play a vital role in that effort. Whether speaking on a panel, interviewing our scholarship recipients, or reading to a child we are grateful for these steadfast champions who are making a difference in our scholars’ lives.
