As Cranaleith completes its 19th year as a spiritual center, the Board pauses to acknowledge in gratitude, the guidance that has brought us thus far. As stewards of this ministry, we have embraced Cranaleith’s mission to be a sanctuary of Mercy to all, and most especially to those on the margins.

This publication looks back and highlights some of our accomplishments in fiscal year 2016-2017, tells stories of our impact and acknowledges those who helped to advance our mission.

As we look ahead, we are excited to be on the threshold of the next phase of our growth. After engaging in an extensive search, it is our pleasure to introduce Charlene Flaherty as the new Executive Director of Cranaleith Spiritual Center.

Charlene is passionate about our mission, deeply formed with the charism of mercy, and gifted in managing others. Equally important is her experience in leading organizations, building cohesive teams, and creating a sustainable future. Her experiences connect well with Cranaleith’s mission, “to seek to invite those at the center of need and those at the center of influence to reflection, reverent dialogue and meaningful partnerships.”

Our Mission Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Cranaleith offers a contemplative space for all those seeking wholeness and transformation for themselves and society. We are committed to making Cranaleith accessible to all, especially to persons who are poor and those who work in solidarity with them. We seek to invite those at the center of need and those at the center of influence to reflection, reverent dialogue and meaningful partnerships.

Our Services

Since our founding in 1998, Cranaleith Spiritual Center has served more than 50,000 individuals through our retreats, programs, and spirit-rekindling environment of safety, respect and trust. Gaelic for “sanctuary of trees,” Cranaleith fosters reflection, discernment and, ultimately, transformation for those who come here. to immerse themselves in environmental concerns. Creative and hands-on programs, such as gardening, farm practices and cooking, are employed to raise awareness about care for the earth and each other. Our Garden Wisdom program provides eco-therapy to clients from local nonprofits.

Spiritual Programs & Retreats Day and overnight programs for those discovering, probing or nurturing their spirituality.

Work & Spirit Series For business leaders to delve deeper into the challenges they face, rekindle their compassion, and renew the creative spirit they bring to their work.

Veterans Programs For returning vets and those that work with them to address the spiritual dimension of healing from the soul-wounds of war.

Eco-Spirituality Drawing on our 10-acre property, we offer a range of programs that engage and inspire participants

Spiritual Direction Formation A multi-year training program for those who wish to nurture and support others in deepening their spirituality and relationship with God. Spiritual direction and psychotherapy are offered by appointment.

Conference Center Meeting Space For organizations seeking a place to focus on mission, strategic planning or to replenish vital energy. Groups benefit from our Mercy hospitality and atmosphere of warmth and inclusion.

More than 89 groups were provided affordable meeting since our founding space and/or customized retreats for the renewal of staff in 1998 working in non-profit and faith-based organizations who serve the neediest among us. This year, 57 percent of these groups were underwritten in whole or part.

A Message From Our New Executive Director As I enter into my first month as Executive Director, I am grateful to have this moment to reflect on the beauty of Cranaleith and the rekindling of spirit, hope and connection that occurs here every day. During my very first visit to Cranaleith, I knew it was unique.

Where else can you practice eco-spirituality through beekeeping, seasonal cooking classes and reflective retreats? We’re about both place and purpose and our wonderful staff and volunteers provide what I recognize as “radical hospitality” to both poor and privileged guests. We have much to offer and I am so blessed! I look forward to meeting you during your next visit to our “Sanctuary of Trees” as our honored guest.

Stories of Transformation Transformation is woven into the fabric of Cranaleith’s story and is made possible by the support of those who believe our mission and its lasting impact on individuals and society.

Aronda Smith-Benson is a member of Cranaleith’s board and a decorated Army veteran. She was introduced to Cranaleith by way of our Coming Home, Becoming Whole retreats for women vets.

“Safety, reverence and gentle guidance welcome those who come to Cranaleith’s retreat days for women vets,” says Aronda. Women can tell their stories from an honest place, and be invited to find hope, resilience and courage within themselves. I see enormous possibilities for Cranaleith to connect to service-providers, and offer something essential to heal the wounds so many carry.”

Aronda is the Founder and Executive Director of the Women Veterans Command Center where she advocates for the empowerment of women vets. She was recently named Veteran of Influence by the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Luke Hillier is the Philadelphia City Director of Mission Year, a national organization that seeks to develop leaders who will transform the church, the city and the world. After a day-long planning retreat, he told us, “Your grounds were beautiful, food terrific, and the meeting room was perfect. But even more than any of that was the truly moving hospitality and kindness from literally every staff member we crossed paths with during our visit.

To receive that, not as high-paying executives, but as a group visiting with a tremendously moderate budget, and to know that all others in our situation are received the same...that’s really special. The commitment you all have to staying true to your mission with integrity and honor means a lot.”

Since 2010, Cranaleith has partnered with CATCH (Citizens Acting Together Can Help, Inc.) to provide Philadelphians, suffering from poverty and severe behavioral health issues, an opportunity to experience an alternative to their daily routine. “Cranaleith offers an environment of natural beauty that is conducive to healing, dignity and respect,” says John Bumbaca, former Mental Health Director, CATCH. “The workshops and activities are highly valued by our clients. By every measure, this joint-venture has proven extremely important to the quality of life of those involved.”

The Interfaith Center of Greater Philadelphia hosted leaders from seminaries and religious training centers to dialogue about interfaith education as a means to better prepare students for vocations in religious leadership.
