WELCOME

D E A R FAM ILY, It is an honor to present the Friends of Foundation Academies 2020-21 Annual Report, which celebrates and commemorates our shared impact from July 2020 to June 2021. This year, we were tested in multiple ways: mentally, physically, emotionally, and technologically. Instead of using the word “unprecedented,” we believe a better adjective for our past year at Foundation Academies might be “undaunted.” A global pandemic couldn’t stop our students, staff, and volunteers from innovatively and creatively developing strategies to achieve excellent teaching and learning. Our donors stepped up, too.

With your generosity, our school community not only survived but thrived in the following areas of need: ■ S TUDENT ENRICHMENT With our scholars learning from home for the majority of the school year, donations to the Friends of FA were crucial to providing class enrichment and support, at-home technology and supplies, as well as external opportunities for learning, expression, and connection. ■ A LUMNI SUPPORT Our alumni support initiatives achieved tremendous growth in 2021. The Knight Fund not only continues to provide small alumni persistence grants for books and college-related supplies, but we also prioritized high-impact financial awards to graduating seniors and launched the Round Table Scholarship program to support FA alumni cohorts through college and on to successful careers. ■ R ESPONSIBLE GROWTH In 2021, with the generous support from gifts to the Friends of FA, we were able to better attract and onboard great teachers, train and develop our faculty, and foster a shared sense of community, even while physically apart. The Friends of FA prepared and equipped staff to return to full-time in-person instruction in April feeling more determined, connected, and resilient than ever. During a year that exposed deep inequities and dire needs across so many communities, we are honored to have your investment in our mission. Thank you for your partnership and support. In community,

Howie Powers Chair, Friends of Foundation Academies

ABOUT THE

FRIENDS

The Friends of Foundation Academies (Friends of FA), a separate 501c3 nonprofit organization, was founded in 2010 to encourage community support of Foundation Academies, a public K-12 charter school in Trenton, NJ. From the first meeting I attended of the Leadership Council at FA three years ago, I knew the school was doing amazing work with the children of Trenton. As a member of the Friends of Foundation Academies Board, I had the privilege this past year of interviewing several candidates for the Round Table Scholarship. Each and every one of these young men and women, in their own unique ways, embodied the mission of the school. It was a truly remarkable experience that completely reinforced and validated my reasons for supporting the school.” – BETSY RENDALL

The mission of Foundation Academies is to ensure that all of our students secure the academic knowledge and skills to prepare them for the nation’s finest colleges, and to instill in them the core values of caring, respect, responsibility, and honesty. A B OU T FO U N DATIO N ACA D EM IES We are proud to be the largest and highest-ranking K-12 free public charter school in Trenton, New Jersey. Founded in 2007 as a middle school, Foundation Academies began under the vision of a world where every child, irrespective of race, gender, academic ability, or socioeconomic background, has access to a high-quality public education — and we continue to work relentlessly to live up to this promise. We now serve more than 1,000 students K-12, operating with four schools on two campuses, and all FA students are admitted by lottery at random. Our consistently high ranking among all public schools in New Jersey and eight consecutive years of 100% college acceptance demonstrate that with the support of dedicated teachers and staff, every student can succeed in a great public school.

RESPONDING TO A HISTORICALLY

CHALLENGING YEAR

In response to challenges in nearly every arena of schooling, we came together to learn, heal, and support each other. The Friends of FA helped provide opportunities for relief, growth, education, and inspiration. This year, and every year, we put FAmily First. 2 02 0 -2 0 2 1 H I G H L IG H TS ■ T he Friends Emergency Fund provided emergency assistance and supplies directly to 160 households hardest hit by COVID-19. ■ O ver 60 FA Collegiate students took action and volunteered their time in the Trenton community as part of our Civic Service Learning project. In all, they dedicated 758 approved service hours, which translated to an economic impact of $23,808. Many tackled issues that directly impacted their community, such as mental health. In recognition of their efforts, students in the group M.I.N.D. (“Mental Illness Needs to be Destigmatized”) were awarded the Service-Learning Excellence Award from the National Youth Leadership Council. ■ T hanks to generous support from a Princeton Area Community Foundation COVID-19 Relief and Recovery Grant, the Friends of FA supported a Family Wellness Workshop series. This included family-oriented mental wellness webinars (hosted by Parenting Pathfinders and Mending Hearts), Family Arts & Crafts Nights (with Village Arts), Family Yoga Night (with Agape Healing and Yoga Wellness Center), and Family Cooking Night (with Chef Aaron Black). ■ W e celebrated LatinX Heritage Month with a special online event featuring student and staff performances, cultural presentations, and a salsa lesson, too! ■ F or Black History Month we celebrated the strength, resilience, beauty, and courage of our Black community with activities and presentations by students in all our schools. Primary school scholars shared their favorite African Kings & Queens, read poetry, and lifted their voices in song. NJ Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman read the book “Superheroes are Everywhere,” by Vice President Kamala Harris, and the Friends of FA provided each FA Primary school student with their own copy of the book. We marked the 100th day of school with virtual visits from Trenton Mayor Reed Gusciora, Leslie Summiel (Trenton NAACP), and Edward Bullock (Trenton Literacy Movement).

MEET THE

CLASS OF 2021

Despite a global pandemic and online instruction throughout most of their senior year, Foundation Academy Collegiate’s (FAC) graduating seniors have once again achieved 100 percent college acceptance! The vast majority of graduates have selected majors that ultimately have the purpose of helping others, which is a value that FA proudly instills in its students beginning in kindergarten. Members of the Class of 2021 will be pursuing careers in education, psychology, criminal justice, business, biology, biochemistry, marketing and communications, journalism, health and exercise sciences, and more. With the help of the Friends of FA, every single graduate enrolled in post-secondary studies received a $250 micro-grant for books and supplies.

C OL L EG E B O UND : FA C O L L EG IATE CLASS OF 2021 In 2020-2021, local and national colleges and universities demonstrated their belief in the future potential of our 71 graduating seniors by awarding them over $17.1 million in academic scholarships and grants. Despite the year’s challenges, they received $4 million more in awards than any class before them. Students from the Class of 2021 will attend more than 25 different postsecondary institutions, including trade schools and the military. ▪ Bloomfield College ▪ Drew University ▪ East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania ▪ Fairleigh Dickinson University-Florham Campus ▪ Kean University ▪ La Salle University ▪ Mercer County Community College ▪ Montclair State University

Foundation Academies is a bright spot in our city. They set the example of being a changemaker for thousands of young men and women. They did that for me, too. I was able to see that I had to do something special with my opportunities and could give back to my community as well. Through my studies and experiences at vaccination clinics, I’ve been taking care of fellow Trentonians, trying to give back to the city that raised me and made me who I am.”

RESPONSIBLE

GROWTH In 2021, with support from gifts to the Friends of FA, we were able to better attract and onboard great teachers, train and develop our faculty, and most importantly, foster a shared sense of community, even while physically apart. We engaged with speakers who are experts in the fields of urban education, college persistence, and trauma-informed practices. Our entire staff and Board also gathered together virtually for multiple anti-racism trainings and discussions.

BECAUSE OF YOU R SU PPORT…

Foundation Academies, as a public charter school, is unable to use any public funds to feed our employees at holiday events, orientations, during Teacher Appreciation Week, or during our daylong all-staff training. Your contributions help to bridge this gap. This work is hard. These small opportunities for learning, appreciation, and celebration go a long way for our school culture and community.” – SHERIA MCRAE

CHIEF ACADEMIC OFFICER FOUNDATION ACADEMIES

A C O N V E R SATIO N WITH A L IV IN G LEGEND: D R . J O H N C A RLOS On June 2, in the midst of one of the busiest months of the year, our entire school community paused to come together and refocus, reenergize, and be inspired by living legend, Dr. John Carlos. The Friends of FA invited the Olympian, author and educator to virtually “visit” our school community to share his wisdom and experience, as well as answer questions from FA scholars and teachers. Dr. Carlos was introduced by his daughter, Ms. Kimme Carlos, an esteemed leader in her own right and now Foundation Academies Board of Trustees President. He told our students, “I’m a man that has a vision as to how this world can be, and I’ve gathered myself through all the ordeals that I had to make me a well-rounded person and still fight for justice.” His story of activism, determination, and unyielding belief in possibility was a moving and gratifying reminder of why we do what we do.

Starting a new job as Instructional Dean in a new school while never actually leaving my home, presented a number of challenges! I am grateful for the support of my colleagues and supervisors. The professional development I’ve received at FA is unlike what I’ve experienced anywhere else. We all really show up ready to have the difficult conversations, to learn new techniques, and to help each other improve and grow so that we can best serve our children. Next, I will be taking on the role of Interim Principal at FA.”

VOLUNTEERS

A year of strife did not stop our volunteers from stepping up, despite not being able to do so in-person. Our supporters enthusiastically responded to our needs and met a myriad of new challenges by virtually guest judging student projects, speaking on panels, interviewing our scholarship recipients, serving on our Leadership Council, or simply reading to a child. We are most thankful for these steadfast champions of our school community who are making a real difference in the lives of our students. ■ M ore than 60 volunteers dedicated their mornings throughout the year to read their favorite children’s books virtually to our first, second, and third graders in support of Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R.), a national initiative to encourage young readers to build skills and develop a love of reading. ■ P .O.D.E.R., a club for the LatinX community at Foundation Academy Collegiate, participated in a Pitch-a-Thon with volunteers to practice advocating for themselves and building self-confidence in a safe space by sharing their personal strengths and providing/receiving feedback with individuals outside of our school community. ■ M ore than 50 volunteers from Glenmede-Princeton exchanged 185 letters virtually with 76 third grade students for our firstever 3rd Grade Pen Pal program at Foundation Academy Intermediate. Glenmede volunteers helped enrich our students’ learning experience while getting to know the school community that they have so generously supported. ■ A panel of local leaders with backgrounds in business, non-profits, social services, and education advised students in Foundation Academy Collegiate’s Civic Service Learning program. They also provided financial support for our scholars to implement their projects and make a direct impact on our community in Trenton.

Thank you for coming and reading to our class I loved the book and I hope you get to come back and read another amazing book I hope you have a good rest of your day stay safe you are an amazing reader and I love reading to it is my favorite subject so I was really excited when I heard a guest reader was coming.
