Keeping your healthy routine during the holiday season can be tricky. However, with a little planning, you can navigate your way through the flood of Christmas party invites with these 5 easy tips.

Sticking to a balanced plate ratio is my number one tip for people trying to navigate the holiday season whilst remaining healthy. Whether it be Christmas breakfast, lunch or dinner, try to fill half your plate with vegetables (think beautiful fresh Christmas salads), onequarter of your plate protein (i.e. seafood/ turkey/ham) and the remaining quarter carbohydrates (preferably wholegrains, i.e. mixed grain salad/roasted sweet potatoes).

It might be tempting to “save up” your calories for an extra cocktail or dessert that night, but if arriving at a party ravenous, you are more likely to eat more than you intended. Combine hunger with a few cocktails, a couple of appetisers here and there, a full plate of dinner, plus seconds and dessert; the Christmas kilos will quickly add up. Eating a nutritious breakfast and lunch and having a high protein snack like Greek yoghurt beforehand means that you will feel satisfied and in control when you arrive, leading to healthier food choices.

Building on the above, Christmas isn’t a time to stop meal planning or having healthy snacks on hand. Leading into the festive season, make sure your present self is kind to your future self and is prepared with some healthy freezer meals and snacks. This takes away any excuses for when you’re tired, stressed or too busy to think about food, and you can whip up a healthy meal or snack in no time!

This time of the year involves a lot of catching up with loved ones and socialising with colleagues. Think outside the box and instead of catching up for a glass of wine or dinner, go for a walk or do a HIIT class together instead. Christmas morning is also a great opportunity to introduce some movement before Christmas lunch. A family walk, game of beach cricket or testing out the new push bikes are all great ideas.

4. Drink in moderation It’s true; you can enjoy a few drinks this festive season without undoing all your hard work throughout the year. However, you need to think ahead as alcohol isn’t your best friend when it comes to weight.

Not only is alcohol high in calories, but the body can’t store it. This means that the body prioritizes metabolising alcohol while storing all other macro-nutrients (i.e. fat and carbohydrates). If you are having a few drinks, opt for something light like a spritzer made with wine and soda water or a vodka soda. Always hydrate between drinks, and you’ll avoid the dreaded hangover the next day.

Lastly Most importantly, Christmas is a time for family and friends, so instead of focusing on eating and drinking or your weight, focus on those around you. It’s been a tough year Canberra, so enjoy hugging loved ones again.

Method Step 1 Preheat the oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Wash the pumpkin, carefully cut in half lengthways, then remove the seeds (see Tip). Place on a baking tray and roast for 1 hour and 10 minutes, or until starting to soften. Leave it to cool slightly. Tip: Roast the pumpkin seeds, then shell before adding to salads or soups.

Step 2 Meanwhile, peel and finely chop the onions with the dried apricots, pick and roughly chop the sage leaves.

Place a medium frying pan over a medium heat with 2 tsp of olive oil. Add the onions and sage and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until softened. Drain the lentils and add to the pan with the chopped apricots.

Step 3 Remove the pumpkin flesh, leaving a 1cm border. Roughly chop the flesh and add to the frying pan, mix well and season to taste. Pile the mixture into the pumpkin shells, topping with crumbled blue cheese and crushed hazelnuts.

6. Add in the smaller flowers, staggering them at different heights in the centre of the vase/ foliage.

7. Add a bow to your vase for that extra touch. If you have any spare baubles or pinecones, attach them to some of the foliage stems with twine or ribbon.

4. Add in your tallest foliage stems, then add in the shorter stems around the outside edges of your vase.

Don’t be afraid to mix it up.

Dressing The Table

Table styling can be a little overwhelming and the question is often asked ‘where do I start?’

My advice is to start by building a base for your Xmas tablescapes. Pieces like timeless dinner sets, cutlery, table linen and glassware. Keep your base neutral, this way you can easily change it up every year by adding in a different feature colour/s. I like to break my table concepts down into two parts: Creating The Scene Start with a feature piece/s. I call this the anchor. It’s often the element that creates your colour theme and pulls the table together. Think a floral arrangement running down the centre of the table with a cluster of candles or perhaps some potted colour or foliage in ceramic pots.

Always remember to keep centrepieces low so they don’t inhibit your guests from talking to each other.

Alternatively, use the end of the table to create a feature piece so it allows room down the centre of the table for food and drinks. A cluster of potted pine trees 18

Tablecloths are beautiful for a formal style table or perhaps a set of placemats for a more relaxed feel. Once you have your tablecloth or placemats in place, move onto your place settings using your dinnerware and glassware. To add interest to your table, don’t be afraid to mix it up.

For example, use matching dinner plates and side plates but add a different bowl.

There are no rules! As a space saver, I like to create a stack - dinner plate, napkin, side plate and then the bowl. Instead of traditional Bon Bon’s, use some ribbon and tie your cutlery together with a little gift like a brooch or earrings. I love this idea as you can tailor the gifts to your guests.

Here you can also place name cards on the table if you are going for a more formal style.

dressed with Xmas ornaments really sets the festive mood. Wrap the pots in brown paper and finish them with a ribbon and Xmas ornament. Plants create a beautiful, textural feature and they can then be planted out into your garden after Xmas so there is no waste! If you have space above your table to hang some festive bunting or a beautiful festive wreath, this will add another layer to your table design so it doesn’t all sit low. Just remember to hang it before you move onto dressing the table so you aren’t trying to balance across a table that is all set and decorated!

Once your tableware is set and your cutlery is in place, it’s time to add your glassware. I generally work off a 3 glass per person rule - 2 wine glasses and a water tumbler. Mix up the water tumblers and use ceramic cups instead to add more texture to the table.

Finally, at each end of the table, add a cluster of small ceramic jugs for sauces and gravy, condiments and salt and pepper so your guests don’t have to be reaching across each other. Place large, flat style ceramic bowls and serving plates through the centre of the table ready for your meat, salads and veggies.

And there you have it! A beautiful festive table that you can change up and build on year after year.

These might be weekly or monthly milestones that support you to work towards your main goal, and help you to adapt your behaviour slowly.

Setting yourself a goal for the new year can be a motivating way to kick a bad habit goodbye, or welcome a new positive change into your life. Most people often have the best of intentions when it comes to making a change, such as “I want to get fitter this year” or “I want to eat better”.

These are both great goals to start a healthier lifestyle in the new year, and while they are usually filled with good intentions, sometimes people start their new routine a little too zealously. And often, this is where most of us go wrong.

But there are a few ways to give yourself a better chance of sticking to your goal in the new year and beyond.

Slow and steady Staying committed to your goal, especially at the start of the year in the peak of summer can be really tough. Often, we hit the ground running on January 1, only to revert back to our previous behaviour by the end of the month. This is not something to feel down or deflated by; you should feel proud of yourself for at least giving it a go.

Each time you complete a mini goal, celebrate your achievement and how far you’ve come. One of the most important things to remember is to not beat yourself up if you go off track. We can all experience those tough days or weeks, but don’t let the challenges derail your journey.

Start by making

small changes

When working towards a lifestyle change, such as improving your fitness, it takes practice, perseverance and sometimes a few bumps in the road before you get to where you’re heading. It also helps if you take it slow and steady, rather than overhauling your entire lifestyle in one go.

One step at a time When it comes to making a positive and permanent change in your life, start by making small changes. If your goal is to improve your fitness, make a plan to hit the gym a few times, and perhaps a walk or Pilates on alternating days.

To get started, perhaps select some fun classes like Zumba or spend time with a PT to develop a fitness routine. It’s important that you do exercises that you enjoy, and that you don’t push yourself beyond your limits. Sweating it out at the gym every day can be too much pressure on your body and mind, especially if you’re new to the scene. If you push yourself too hard too quickly, this can also lead to burn out.
