EDITORIALE di Marco Miglio

Osmosi creative nel segno del genius loci

D

al paesaggio naturale della California alle vette dolomitiche, dal Central Park di New York ai templi greci di Selinunte, il viaggio alla ricerca dello stile in questo numero di Villegiardini tocca una tipologia di contesti varia e articolata. I diversi progetti architettonici e di garden design sul numero di marzo sono profondamente influenzati dal loro ambiente, che contribuisce alla definizione della personalità estetica e dello stile di vita per il quale sono stati pensati. Un’osmosi creativa che rende particolarmente interessante il racconto del progetto e che consente di apprrezzare diverse declinazioni dei linguaggi contemporanei in diversi ambiti: urbani e paesaggistici, classici e contemporanei. Il filo conduttore è stata la maestria dei diversi autori di ville, attici e giardini, che hanno saputo cogliere echi, vibrazioni e suggestioni offerte dal contesto per dare forma a soluzioni architettoniche e di design innovative ma in piena continuità con lo spirito del luogo. ● Creative osmosis in the sign of the genius loci. From the natural landscape of California to the peaks of the Dolomites, from New York’s Central Park to the Greek temples of Selinunte, the journey in search of style in this issue of Villegiardini touches on a diverse and articulate typology of contexts. The various architectural and garden design projects in the March issue are profoundly influenced by the environment, which contibutes to defining the aesthetic personality and lifestyle for which they were conceived. A creative osmosis that makes the project narrative particularly interesting and allows to aprreciate different declinations of contemporary languages in different contexts: urban and landscape, classical and contemporary. The common thread was the mastery of the different authors of villas, penthouses and gardens, who were able to capture echoes, vibrations and suggestions offered by the context to shape innovative architectural and design solutions but in full continuity with the soul of the place. ■

Stile e comfort in acqua e a bordo vasca Lo studio aolo Frello & Partners ha firmato il progetto di una piscina ricca di raffinate soluzioni progettuali e di una ‘spiaggetta’ con pezzi di design d’autore in stretta relazione con l’acqua

“L

a richiesta da parte della committenza era piuttosto articolata”, spiega l’architetto Paolo Frello. “Il desiderio era infatti quello di trasformare un’area squadrata e limitata nel giardino di una villa nel milanese in una piscina dal disegno non convenzionale che potesse servire oltre che per i canonici utilizzi, anche a fare giocare un piccolo cagnolino che non sa nuotare”. A partrtire da questi presupposti, il progetto si è incentrato sulla definizione di diverse modalità di fruizione.

Su un lato della piscina, lunga circa 15 metri, è stata ricavata una corsia a profondità continua pensata per il nuoto, mentre la parte restante è tutta dedicata al relax. Sono stati così realizzati una scalinata sott’acqua che porta gradualmente la vasca a una profondità di 180 cm e dei basamenti per il posizionamento di materassi a sfioro rivestiti con tessuti impermeabili personalizzati con un motivo decorativo di Paolo Frello con colori estivi e disegni geometrici ispirati agli anni 70. A completare questa ‘spiaggetta’, le poltrone outdoor LC3 di Cassina su disegno Le Corbusier e la pavimentazione in lastre di pietra quarzite. La parte tecnica della piscina è stata curata da Piscine Castiglioni. l T.M.

Style and comfort in and around the water. Studio Paolo Frello & Partners has designed a swimming pool full of refined design solutions and a ‘little beach’ with signature design pieces in continuous relationship with the water. “The request from the client was quite articulate,” explains architect Paolo Frello.

“In fact, the desire was to transform a square and limited area in the garden of a villa in the Milan area into a swimming pool with an unconventional design that could serve not only for the canonical uses, but also to let a small dog who cannot swim play.” Starting with these premises, the project focused on defining different ways of use. On one side of the pool, which is about 15 meters long, there is a continuous depth lane designed for sports swimming, while the remaining part is entirely dedicated to relaxation. Thus, an underwater staircase was created that gradually takes the pool to a depth of 180 cm and bases for the placement of overflow mattresses covered with waterproof fabrics customized with a decorative pattern by Paolo Frello with summer colors and geometric designs inspired by the 1970s. Completing this “little beach” are Cassina’s LC3 outdoor chairs designed by Le Corbusier and quartzite stone slab flooring. The technical part of the pool was made by Piscine Castiglioni. ■

ealizzata durante il Festival des Architectures Vives 2023, in un cortile del 700 a Montpellier, Francia, questa monumentale opera, alta nove metri è un omaggio ai libri e alla scrittura come mezzo di trasmissione delle emozioni nel tempo. In un’epoca in cui la comunicazione è virtuale e sempre più veloce, i libri offrono il tempo di fermarsi e sognare ad occhi aperti. L’installazione ha la forma di una spirale composta da un migliaio di pagine sciolte che fuoriescono da un libro antico e maestoso e si dirigono, simbolicamente, verso il cielo. ● T. M. Living architecture. The “Livrons-nous” installation by architects Camille Maire, Viviane Le Deunff and Charlotte Jeanjean won Prix du Public in Montpellier. Created during the Festival des Architectures Vives 2023 in an 18th-century courtyard in Montpellier, France, this monumental, nine-meter-high artwork is a tribute to books and writing as a means of transmitting emotions over time. In an age when communication is virtual and ever faster, books offer time to stop and daydream. The installation is in the form of a spiral composed of a thousand loose pages that emerge from an ancient and majestic book and head, symbolically, toward the sky. ■

I pavimenti alternano parquet Legno+Color Small Nat in rovere e Cementoresina KK 91, mentre le pareti sono state rivestite con resina Wallpaper Living nella gamma cromatica Modern Yellow, caratterizzata da una componente polverosa che smorza le tinte giallo intenso, facendole sfociare in raffinati tortora, fango e caffè tostato. Warm minimalism. An eclectic selection of vintage and contemporary design pieces juxtaposed with architectural details and refined materials defines the atmospheres of a Scandinavian-style apartment.

The warm and natural atmospheres that distinguish this abode were achieved thanks to a color palette created by combining products Color Collection by Kerakoll. The floors alternate Legno+Color Small Nat parquet in oak and Cementoresina KK 91, while the walls were covered with Wallpaper Living resin in the Modern Yellow color range, characterized by a dusty component that softens the deep yellow hues, blurring them into refined taupe, mud and roasted coffee. Creating a soft contrast is the olive green chosen for the bedroom furniture elements, balancing between cold and warm colors. ■

Enzo Mari, le infinite isole (del sapere)

E

nzo Mari, nato a Novara nel 1932, è stato uno dei più grandi designer italiani del 900. Il suo lavoro è l’esito di una rigorosa presa di posizione a livello ideologico e politico, d'ispirazione egalitaria, e le sue opere non sono solo ‘idee' ma ‘conoscenza’ collettiva.

Progettista, critico e teorico, è stato uno tra i più interessanti protagonisti del mondo dell’arte e della cultura italiana e internazionale. Mari ha donato l’intera collezione delle sue opere alla città di Milano, a condizione che per quarant’anni nessuno potesse avere accesso al suo Archivio. Solo una nuova generazione, “non degradata come quella odierna”, avrebbe potuto farne un uso consapevole per riprendere così in mano “il significato profondo delle cose”.

Affinché, per un’ultima volta, fosse possibile aver accesso al suo Archivio prima di questa lunga sospensione dal ricordo, nel 2020-2021 la Triennale di Milano, il direttore Stefano Boeri e il curatore Hans Ulrich Obrist, gli hanno dedicato una grande retrospettiva: 60 anni di attività progettuale, dall’arte al design, dall’architettura alla filosofia, dalla didattica alla grafica. His work is the outcome of a rigorous stance on an ideological and political level, of egalitarian inspiration, and his works are not just 'ideas' but collective 'knowledge'. A designer, critic and theorist, he was one of the most interesting protagonists of the Italian and international art and culture scene.

Mari donated the entire collection of his works to the city of Milan on the condition that for forty years no one could have access to his Archive. Only a new

Lo studio londinese Banda, guidato da Edo Mapelli Mozzi, ha firmato il progetto di interior design di un lussuoso attico al 76° e 77° piano di un grattacielo di New York con vista mozzafiato su Central Park

L

a vista è di quelle che non si dimenticano e la collocazione è tra le più ambite al mondo. La duplex penthouse si trova infatti in un grattacielo residenziale a New York sul lato nord della 57a strada, vicino alla Sixth Avenue.

Completato nel 2021, 111 West 57th Street di JDS Development Group, noto anche come Steinway Tower, è un edificio con una duplice articolazione, che comprende una modernissima torre di 84 piani per un’altezza complessiva di 435 metri (design SHoP Architects), perfettamente integrata con lo Steinway Hall, uno storico edificio di 16 piani progettato da Warren e Wetmore a metà degli anni 20. Un edificio tra i più iconici di Manhattan che ha ospitato per quasi un secolo lo showroom di Steinway & Sons, celeberrimo produttore dei pianoforti più amati dai concertisti di tutto il mondo.

L’intervento di interior design, firmato dallo studio londinese Banda Design & Development Studio, è partito proprio da questa contaminazione tra un prestigioso passato e una innovativa modernità per dare forma a una dimora esclusiva, nella quale il lusso non è ostentazione ma ricerca di un racconto unico e convolgente all’insegna dell’eccellenza nel design. “La nostra visione era quella di creare un progetto di interni pertinente al luogo, che completasse il dinamico teatro visivo esterno e l’architettura dell’edificio. Sapevo che avremmo potuto aggiungere profondità, personalità e un forte senso di abitabilità scegliendo opere d’arte e arredi contemporanei, di antiquariato, vintage e di alta manifattura provenienti da tutto il mondo”. Lo studio ha così concepito ambientazioni che offrono accostamenti dinamici accanto a una narrazione coerente, fondendo senza soluzione di continuità tradizione e modernità, natura e città, sottigliezza ed enfasi. “Il mio obiettivo è stato quello di creare un ecosistema di design che riflettesse la storia dell’edificio e la sua miscela di stili architettonici”, afferma Mapelli Mozzi. “Un tour de force internazionale e interdisciplinare per creare un interno con pezzi altamente curati e mirati provenienti da generi, epoche e luoghi diversi.” Per raggiungerlo si è rivelata fondamentale la collaborazione con Invisible Collection per la scelta di arredi e complementi d’autore e la galleria Nous Art, con sede a Nelle pagine di apertura, la zona living con due divani Saint Honoré di Pierre Augustin Rose rivestiti con tessuto Vladamiro di Dedar nel tono Corda tra i quali è stato posizionato il tavolo basso Cuprite d’Eau Coffee Table di Pierre Bonnefille. Sul parquet, tappeto Paysage no.

Parigi, che ha fornito le molte opere d’arte allestite nello spazio. Per quanto riguarda il layout e la distribuzione, il disegno è chiaro e razionale. L’ascensore conduce direttamente a una galleria privata al 76° piano, con un’ampia scala disegnata da William Sofield, pluripremiato architetto d’interni. Da questa si accede all’abitazione, organizzata su due livelli. Al primo, sul lato nord, un grande open space si affaccia direttamente su Central Park mentre a sud la cucina, la sala da pranzo e lo studio si aprono su una terrazza affacciata sull’iconico skyline urbano di New York, con vista da fiume a fiume e dal quale in lontananza si scorge la Statua della Libertà. La cucina personalizzata, dai volumi geometrici, è stata realizzata su misura con finiture spazzolate a mano e piano di lavoro e alzatina in quarzite bianco cristallo.

Nell’open space, le morbide curve del 280 Sofa di Pierre Augustin Rose fanno da contrappunto visivo alle precise linee geometriche dell’edificio entrando armoniosamente in dialogo con il tavolo-scultura Cuprite d’Eau Coffee di Pierre Bonnefille. Entrambi provenienti da Invisible Collection, sono stati adagiati sulle trame raffinate del tappeto Paysage, disegnato dall’artista Francois Mascarello e annodati a mano in Nepal. Uno spazio studiato per favorire la convivialità, con le sue finestre a tutta altezza, nel quale spiccano anche il tavolino da caffè The Craft, che fonde la raffinatezza di una laccatura pregiata con gli accenti brutalisti del legno sgrossato per creare un equilibrio perfetto e, sul lato opposto una zona dining informale che ruota attorno allo Swan Dining Table di Francesco Balzano, un pezzo di art design in edizione limitata prodotto dall’Atelier Saint-Jaques. “Ci è piaciuto molto lavorare a stretto contatto con Banda e con i nostri designer di punta per creare pezzi su misura come questo” sottolinea Lily Froehlicher, cofondatrice di Invisible Collection. “Sono opere che testimoniano le vette che si possono raggiungere quando si mettono insieme i migliori autori. È affascinante che una delle proprietà più eccezionali di New York sia stata progettata e decorata da due società europee con sede a Londra.

Questo ci ha fatto riflettere, poiché la nostra ragion d’essere è quella di presentare il savoir-faire e la creatività francese a livello internazionale, seguendo le orme di Jean-Michel Frank che, quasi 34

cento anni fa, guidò un team di artisti e artigiani per ristrutturare l’appartamento di Rockefeller”. Lo spazio ospita opere d’arte dello scultore cinese Wang Kepingopere, di Wolfgang Tillmans, Andy Warhol e Per Kirkeby, scelte in collaborazione con Nous Art. Al piano superiore, la master bedroom è affacciata su Central Park, polmone verde della metropoli della East Coast, progettato da Frederick Law Olmsted e Calvert Vaux a metà 800. Qui elementi moderni come la testiera custom rivestita con tessuto Lelievre sono stati messi in dialogo con icone del design del 900, come la Sedia Alta di Oscar Niemeyer, maestro del Modernismo brasiliano, e pezzi da conversazione come la vasca free-standing in nichel lucido realizzata a mano da William Holland e dotata di rubinetterie esclusive in bronzo progettate dallo Studio Sofield e fuse a mano da P.E. Guerin. Sul pavimento, il tappeto in seta Nazar Rug 5 in blu brillante e turchese con ‘occhi’ neri, dà un tocco di colore, morbidezza, consistenza e giocosità. “Questo è uno dei miei pezzi preferiti”, spiega Mapelli Mozzi. “La sua realizzazione coinvolge circa 50 esperti artigiani nepalesi. È questa combinazione di lavoro di squadra e talento che lo rende davvero eccezionale”.

La suite dispone inoltre di studio, cabina armadio e di una zona spogliatoio, nonché di due confortevoli bagni rivestiti in onice bianco. Le pareti della suite principale sono rivestite con un intonaco pigmentato che aggiunge calore e una matericità terrosa al vetro e all’acciaio.

In tutti questi ambienti il design e l’arte sono stati orchestrati con precisione per creare un interno elegante e sofisticato, nel quale dominano linee morbide, tonalità rilassanti che richiamano la natura e tessuti con trame materiche. Scelte che hanno consentito ai progettisti di creare atmosfere al tempo stesso sofisticate e confortevoli per una dimora da vivere e scoprire gradualmente in ogni suo dettaglio di stile.

“Con questo intervento”, conclude Mapelli Mozzi”, “abbiamo voluto esplorare il concetto di opulenza contemporanea con un’idea di lusso sobrio e discreto. Si tratta di conoscere il vero valore di qualcosa, come la sua storia, l’essenza che esprime. Qui, all’interno di questa moderna struttura all’avanguardia che si trova in uno degli edifici più antichi e riconoscibili di New York, l’importanza della provenienza, rilevanza e autenticità si sono rivelati fondamentali.” ●

One step away from the sky. London firm Banda, led by Edo Mapelli Mozzi, has designed the interiors for a luxury penthouse on the 76th and 77th floors of a New York skyscraper with breathtaking views of Central Park.

The view is unforgettable, and its location is among the most coveted in the world. The duplex penthouse is indeed located in a residential skyscraper in New York on the north side of 57th Street, near Sixth Avenue. Completed in 2021, 111 West 57th Street by JDS Development Group, also known as Steinway Tower, is a building with a dual structure, comprising a modern 84-story tower with a total height of 435 meters (designed by SHoP Architects), perfectly integrated with Steinway Hall, a historic 16-story building designed by Warren and Wetmore in the mid-1920s. This building, one of the most iconic in Manhattan, hosted the showroom of Steinway & Sons, the renowned manufacturer of pianos most beloved by concert performers worldwide, for nearly a century. The interiors, crafted by the London-based Banda Design & Development Studio, started from this blend of prestigious past and innovative modernity to shape an exclusive residence, where luxury is not ostentation but the pursuit of a unique and compelling narrative under the banner of excellence in design. “Our vision was to create an interior design scheme that was relevant to the location, that complemented the dynamic visual theatre outside and the architecture of the building. I knew we could add depth, personality and a strong sense of home by incorporating antiques, vintage items and artisanal pieces sourced from all over the world.” The studio thus conceived settings that offer dynamic juxtapositions alongside a coherent narrative, seamlessly blending tradition and modernity, nature and city, subtlety and emphasis. “I wanted to create a design ecosystem that would reflect the building’s story and its blend of architectural styles,” says Mapelli Mozzi.

“The aim was to orchestrate a cross disciplinary, international tour de force to create an interior made up of highly curated and purposeful pieces from different genres, eras and locations.” Achieving this was crucially supported by the collaboration with Invisible Collection for the selection of designer furnishings and complements and the Nous Art gallery, based in Paris, which provided the many artworks installed in the space. Regarding the layout and distribution, the design is clear and rational. The elevator leads directly to a private gallery on the 76th floor with a wide staircase designed by William Sofield, a multi-award-winning interior architect. From here, you enter the dwelling, organized on two levels. On the first, on the north side, a large open space faces directly onto Central Park, while to the south, the kitchen, dining room, and study open onto a terrace overlooking New York’s iconic urban skyline, with views from river to river and from which the Statue of Liberty can be seen in the distance. The custom kitchen, with geometric volumes, was made to measure with hand-brushed finishes and a worktop and backsplash in white crystal quartzite.

In the open space, the soft curves of the 280 Sofa by Pierre Augustin Rose visually counterbalance the precise geometric lines of the building, harmoniously conversing with the sculpture-table Cuprite d’Eau Coffee by Pierre Bonnefille.

Both coming from Invisible Collection, they were laid on the refined textures of the Paysage rug, designed by the artist Francois Mascarello and hand-knotted in Nepal. A space designed to foster conviviality, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, also features The Craft Coffee Table, which blends the refinement of a fine lacquer with the brutalist accents of rough wood to create a perfect balance, and on the opposite side, an informal dining area revolving around the Swan Dining Table by Francesco Balzano, a limited edition art design piece produced by Atelier Saint-Jaques. “We loved working hand in hand with Banda, and with our star designers to craft bespoke pieces like this,” emphasizes Lily Froehlicher, co-founder of Invisible Collection. “They are a testament to 37

the heights one can reach (no pun intended!) when you put together the best.

It is quite fascinating that one of the most exceptional properties in New York is being designed and decorated by two London-based, European companies.

This speaks to us at Invisible Collection, as our raison d’être is to showcase French savoir- faire and creativity internationally, following in the footsteps of Jean-Michel Frank who, almost one hundred years ago, led a team of artists and artisans to refurbish Rockefeller’s apartment…” The space hosts artworks

by Chinese sculptor Wang Keping, Wolfgang Tillmans, Andy Warhol, and Per Kirkeby, selected in collaboration with Nous Art. On the upper floor, the master bedroom overlooks Central Park, the green lung of the East Coast metropolis, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in the mid-1800s. Here, modern elements like the custom headboard upholstered with Lelievre fabric have been dialogued with 20th-century design icons like the Alta Chair by Oscar Niemeyer, master of Brazilian Modernism, and conversation pieces like the free-standing bathtub in polished nickel handcrafted by William Holland equipped with exclusive bronze fittings designed by Studio Sofield and hand-cast by P.E. Guerin. On the floor, the silk Nazar Rug 5 in bright blue and turquoise with black ‘eyes’ adds a touch of color, softness, texture, and playfulness. “This is one of my favorite pieces,” explains Mapelli Mozzi. “Its creation involves about 50 expert Nepalese craftspeople. A combination of teamwork and talent that really makes it sing.” The suite also features a study, walk-in closet, and a dressing area, as well as two comfortable bathrooms clad in white onyx. The walls of the main suite are covered with pigmented plaster that adds warmth and an earthy materiality to the glass and steel. In all these spaces, design and art have been orchestrated with precision to create an elegant and sophisticated interior, where soft lines, calming tones that recall nature, and textured fabrics dominate. These choices allowed the designers to create atmospheres that are sophisticated and comfortable at the same time for a residence to live in and gradually discover in every detail of style.

“We were able to really explore the concept of contemporary opulence with this expansive duplex space”, concludes Mapelli Mozzi. “Luxury here is subtle and understated. It’s about knowing the true value of something, such as its back story - the power within it. a ragione fondamentale di ogni forma è la sua stessa aderenza alla vita. È una regola elementare dalle ricchissime e varie conseguenze”.

La frase dell’architetto Luigi Caccia Dominioni, citata dagli architetti Fabio Costanzo e Maria Rosaria Piazza dello Studio 4e per spiegare il progetto della Selinus House, svela la natura di un intervento che sembra nascere dal movimento e dal ‘sentire’ di corpo e anima dei suoi abitanti, ma anche di una vita non necessariamente umana: il paesaggio con la sua vegetazione, le luci e ombre, la terra, il mare. Quel concetto che Caccia Dominioni utilizzava per descrivere la sua architettura degli interni, qui si può estendere a una visione del progetto unitaria, che abbraccia interno ed esterno senza soluzione di continuità. “Selinus House è nata dalla volontà di una famiglia molto unita, che dà valore alla convivialità, e dal suo amore per la bellezza e la cultura del territorio” raccontano gli architetti.

La dimora di 300 mq, sviluppata su due piani, sorge sul promontorio di Selinunte, in Sicilia. Domina, a perdita d’occhio, la vista della vallata del fiume Belice che sfocia lungo la costa sud del mare Mediterraneo: la suggestiva campagna siciliana coltivata a vigneti e uliveti che degrada dolcemente dal verde della macchia mediterranea fino alla lunga distesa di sabbia dorata della baia sottostante. “Il progetto di ristrutturazione e riqualificazione si è rivelato da subito molto complesso, per la delicatezza del contesto naturale, unico e di grande valore. Questo ci ha entusiasmati e motivati nel cercare soluzioni architettoniche che fossero rispettose dell’ambiente e poco impattanti. Architettura e paesaggio sono stati attentamente confrontati e bilanciati, per cercare l’equilibrio e trarre ispirazione da questo dialogo continuo”. L’architettura si apre così al panorama, diventando essa stessa paesaggio architettonico. L’accesso alla villa avviene tramite un percorso nel verde che si snoda lungo tutto il suo perimetro e , alternando luci e ombre, segue linee morbide e ondulate in contrapposizione ai volumi stereometrici dell’architettura, in modo da integrarla armoniosamente con il paesaggio e aprire viste prospettiche attentamente studiate. La creazione di colline erbose con bordure fiorite movimentano il giardino sviluppato su più livelli, collegati tramite una scala e un viale in dolce pendenza con carattere polifunzionale. “La scelta di piante resistenti al vento marino e alla salsedine sono frutto di un attento studio ambientale e di valorizzazione dei punti di sosta e di vista strategici, da cui si può apprezzare la vegetazione spontanea e la tela cromatica tipica del paesaggio mediterraneo”. La piscina, dalla forma curvilinea, rivestita con un mix di mosaico dai colori marini, produce un effetto di superficie infinito, fondendosi con la vista del mare. I gradini in pietra accentuano questo collegamento, prolungando prospetticamente il profilo della battigia e richiamando le piccole dune modellate dal vento. L’intervento di landscape design, diventa così il trat-d’union che collega l’ambiente con l’intimità degli interni. Questi, caratterizzati dalla ricerca di un’atmosfera di estrema chiarezza e luminosità, definiscono spazi dove potere apprezzare al meglio la bellezza del contesto. “I volumi interni generano connessioni, interagendo attivamente con tutti i suoi fruitori. Il progetto di un mobile, o di una scala, diventano allora un’occasione per risolvere un vuoto spaziale e dare unicità e carattere a un ambiente”. Al piano terra un articolato open space, con outdoor pensato come sua naturale estensione, è suddiviso in una successione 47

di ambienti che includono soggiorno, pranzo e una cucina a vista. “Il progetto della zona giorno è stato realizzato attraverso una soluzione di arredo unica ed esclusiva che comprende più funzioni (zona tv,camino e mobile contenitore funzionale alla zona pranzo) e crea un sistema fluido e articolato”. Due scale che collegano il piano terra al primo sono trattate in maniera distinta, in funzione delle diverse esigenze.

Al piano superiore si trovano le camere da letto dal carattere più intimo e accogliente, dotate di ampi terrazzi. Eleganti dettagli definiscono gli interni: dagli arredi custom made, ai materiali nobili utilizzati come legni, marmi, pietre, metalli e vetro nei colori naturali, alle resine, fino agli accessori dal design ricercato. “I colori scelti per le finiture interne ed esterne richiamano gli elementi della natura circostante, dando vita a una raffinata palette cromatica che ricorda la spuma del mare, il litorale sabbioso, i canneti palustri lungo il fiume, la vegetazione e le varie tonalità del mare”. l

“The- fundamental reason for any form is its very adherence to life. It is an elementary rule with very rich and varied consequences”. The sentence by architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni, quoted by architects Fabio Costanzo and Maria Rosaria Piazza of Studio 4e to explain the Selinus House project, reveals the nature of an intervention that seems to be born from the movement and ‘ feeling’ of body and soul of its inhabitants, but also of a life that is not necessarily human: the landscape with its vegetation, lights and shadows, land, and sea. That concept that Caccia Dominioni used to describe his interior architecture can be extended here to a unified design vision that embraces interior and exterior seamlessly. “Selinus House was 50

commissioned by a close-knit family, that values conviviality, and by its love for the beauty and culture of the area”, the architects recount. The 300-square-meter, two-story dwelling stands on the promontory of Selinunte, Sicily. It dominates, as far as the eye can see, the view of the valley of the Belice River that flows along the southern coast of the Mediterranean Sea: the picturesque Sicilian countryside planted with vineyards and olive groves that gently slopes from the green Mediterranean scrub to the long stretch of golden sand of the bay below. “The renovation and redevelopment project immediately proved to be very complex, due to the delicacy of the unique and valuable natural setting. This inspired and motivated us to seek architectural solutions that were environmentally friendly and low impact.

Architecture and landscape were carefully compared and balanced, to seek harmony and draw inspiration from this ongoing dialogue”. The architecture thus opens up to the landscape, becoming an architectural landscape itself. Access to the villa is via a pathway through the greenery that winds along its entire perimeter and, alternating light and shadow, follows soft, undulating lines as opposed to the stereometric volumes of the architecture, so as to integrate it harmoniously with the landscape and open up carefully designed perspective views.

The creation of grassy hills with flowering borders enliven the garden developed on several levels, connected by a staircase and a gently sloping walkway with a multifunctional character. “The choice of plants resistant to sea wind and saltiness are the result of a careful environmental study and enhancement of strategic resting and viewpoints, from which one can appreciate the spontaneous vegetation and the chromatic canvas typical of the Mediterranean landscape”. The curved swimming pool, clad with a mix of mosaic in marine colors, produces an infinite surface effect, blending with the sea view. Stone steps accentuate this connection, prospectively extending the shoreline profile and recalling the small dunes shaped by the wind. The landscape design intervention, thus becomes the link that connects the environment with the intimacy of the interiors. The latter, characterized by the search for an atmosphere of extreme clarity and brightness, define spaces where one can best appreciate the beauty of the context. “Interior volumes generate connections, actively interacting with all its users. The design of a piece of furniture, or a staircase, then becomes an opportunity to resolve a spatial void and give uniqueness and character to an environment.”

On the ground floor, an articulated open space, with outdoor designed as its natural extension, is divided into a succession of rooms that include living, dining and an open kitchen. “The design of the living area was realized through a unique and exclusive furniture solution that includes multiple functions (TV area, fireplace and storage unit functional to the dining area) and creates a fluid and articulated system”. Two staircases connecting the ground floor to the first floor are treated separately according to different needs. “In the TV area the staircase emerges and becomes an element of exposed furniture that gives more brightness to the living area, while in the dining area it becomes a functional element linked to the kitchen environment”. On the upper floor are the bedrooms with a more intimate and cozy character, equipped with large terraces”. Elegant details define the interiors: from the custom-made furniture, to the noble materials used such as woods, marble, stone, metals and glass in natural colors, to resins, to the accessories with sophisticated design. “The colours chosen for the interior and exterior finishes evoke the elements of the surrounding nature, resulting in a refined color palette reminiscent of sea foam, sandy shoreline, marshy reeds along the river, vegetation and the various shades of the sea”. ■

l centro della Conca d’Ampezzo, una splendida valle immersa tra maestose montagne entrate a far parte del patrimonio naturale dell’umanità UNESCO, sorge il Dolomiti Lodge Alverà, di proprietà dello chef Claudio Alverà e dei suoi fratelli.

Protagonista dell’hôtellerie a Cortina D’Ampezzo, è un resort unico, sia per il suo ristorante dove il calore della tradizione alpina si unisce all’eleganza della modernità, sia per i servizi di eccellenza. Tra materiali naturali, boiserie dalle linee essenziali e un interior design ricercato, il Dolomiti Lodge è una struttura di piccole dimensioni focalizzata su un servizio tailor-made per il cliente, con un’attenzione particolare all’ambiente e alle nuove tecnologie. “In passato sono stati costruiti principalmente grandi alberghi, con ottimi servizi ma spesso impersonali”, racconta Claudio Alverà. “In seguito a un cambiamento di mentalità, oggi la realtà turistica è diversa. Sulla scia di questa tendenza, è nato Chalet Serge, un nuovo spazio privato per l’hospitality che coniuga arredo, architettura e arte. La sua particolarità è l’idea di far sentire il cliente come a casa, offrendo al tempo stesso un’esperienza autentica. Costruito con tronchi di alberi di cirmolo abbattuti dalle copiose nevicate invernali, Chalet Serge è un’isola di relax per coloro che vogliono concedersi una pausa rigenerante. “Cortina sta cambiando. L’attribuzione delle Olimpiadi Invernali 2026 ha attivato energie nuove. Con Chalet Serge stiamo lavorando sul concetto dell’albergo-casa, o della casa-albergo, qualcosa che qui finora non si era ancora sperimentato”.

Lo Chalet accoglie l’ospite in un ambiente a vocazione domestica, che non rinuncia ai servizi dell’hôtellerie contemporanea: suite spaziose, camere per gli ospiti, una grande zona giorno, cucina a vista sulla sala da pranzo, e area wellness. Grandi vetrate e accoglienti spazi esterni permettono di ammirare le famose montagne Tofane e godere appieno dell’incredibile paesaggio circostante. Cucina, sala da pranzo e soggiorno si affacciano su un grande open space. La cucina in acciaio, pensata come palcoscenico per lo show cooking, è dipinta di azzurro, un colore tradizionale delle stuben ladine e tirolesi che si diffuse negli anni 20 del 900 dopo l’influenza spagnola per trasmettere una percezione di pulito e di freschezza. Al centro della sala da pranzo un grande tavolo quadrato può accogliere fino a quattordici ospiti. Nel living, una scala in ferro battuto conduce a un soppalco nel sottotetto destinato a mini-cinema. “Per il design di interni abbiamo scelto arredi che sono autentiche sculture del ‘fare artigiano’, corpi solidi come le nostre Dolomiti. Meravigliano e caratterizzano lo spazio e riescono a restituire immediatamente un’idea di comfort. Abbiamo lavorato inoltre con artigiani locali, anche importanti, che hanno dato una connotazione più tradizionale e una nuova vita alle ‘reliquie’ trovate e raccolte sul territorio, come vecchi tronchi diventati opere scultoree”.

La SPA privata dotata di vasca idromassaggio, doccia scozzese, bagno turco e sauna in rovere si caratterizza per la scelta di una boiserie ‘organica’ in cui sono stati volutamente lasciati i disegni delle muffe formatesi sui tronchi di cirmolo caduti a terra prima della loro raccolta.

the individual customer, familiar, but at the same time of excellence.” In the wake of this trend, Chalet Serge was born, a new private hospitality space that combines furnishings, architecture and art. Its special feature is the idea of making the customer feel at home while offering an authentic experience.

Built with trunks of stone pine trees felled by copious winter snowfalls, Chalet Serge is an island of relaxation for those who want to take a rejuvenating break. “Cortina is changing. The attribution of the 2026 Winter Olympics has activated new energies. With Chalet Serge we are working on the concept of the hotel-home, or house-hotel, something that has not been experienced here so far.” The Chalet welcomes guests in a home-like setting that does not give up the services of the contemporary hôtellerie: spacious suites, guest rooms, a large living area, open kitchen to the dining room, and wellness area. Large windows and cozy outdoor spaces allow guests to admire the famous Tofane Mountains and fully enjoy the amazing surrounding landscape. The kitchen, dining room and living room overlook a large open space. The steel kitchen, designed as a stage for show cooking, is painted blue, a traditional color of Ladin and Tyrolean stuben that spread in the 1920s after Spanish influence to convey a perception of cleanliness and freshness. In the center of the dining room, a large square table can seat up to fourteen guests. In the living room, a wrought-iron staircase leads to a loft in the attic intended as a mini-cinema.

“For the interior design we chose furnishings that are authentic sculptures of ‘craftsmanship,’ bodies as solid as our Dolomites. They marvel and characterize the space and manage to immediately restore an idea of comfort. We also worked with local artisans, including important ones, who gave a more traditional connotation and a new life to ‘relics’ found and collected in the area, such as old logs that have become sculptural works.” The private spa equipped with a whirlpool bath, Scottish shower, Turkish bath and oak sauna is characterized by the choice of ‘organic’ woodwork in which the patterns of mold formed on the pine logs that fell to the ground before they were harvested were deliberately left behind. The rooms are embellished with ad hoc carved wooden walls and artworks by artists such as Julio Larraz, Mario Arlati and Igor Mitoraj, an initiative made possible through collaboration with some of Cortina’s most prestigious galleries. The Chalet Serge of the Dolomiti Lodge Alverà develops a hospitality project in which tradition and innovation come together: architecture and furnishings are designed and chosen to cross the boundaries of conventions by nurturing that necessary process of transformation in the area in anticipation of the next Olympic event. All this in the setting of the undisputed pearl of the Dolomites. ■

IA Photo Fair è la più consolidata fiera italiana dedicata alla fotografia. Nata nel 2011 da un’idea di Fabio Castelli, MIA si pone l’obiettivo di supportare il collezionismo nell’acquisire sempre maggiore coscienza e competenza sul ruolo della fotografia nell’arte contemporanea. “MIA è sempre di più una fiera dove arte e consapevolezza sono attivatori sia di mercato che di valori”, spiega Francesca Malgara, direttore artistico. Oggi controllata da Fiere di Parma, realtà leader del panorama fieristico italiano, MIA è in programma da giovedì 11 a domenica 14 aprile, nella sede di Allianz MiCo, grande centro congressi in via Gattamelata 13 a Milano, nel nuovo quartiere Citylife. Il filo conduttore dell’evento di quest’anno sarà Changing, il tema del cambiamento nella nostra contemporaneità: dalle emergenze climatiche causate dal riscaldamento globale, ai diritti civili, alle sfide poste dalla trasformazione economica, tecnologica e sociale. La convergenza di fotografia e collezionismo, sarà protagonista della mostra La forma delle relazioni, a cura di Rica Cerbarano. La mostra presenterà oltre 50 opere, provenienti da importanti collezioni private italiane, attraverso un percorso espositivo che illustra come l’immagine fotografica sia l’esito di relazioni, legami, connessioni. MIA Photo Fair is the most established Italian fair dedicated to photography. Launched in 2011 from an idea by Fabio Castelli, MIA aims to support collectors in becoming increasingly aware of and knowledgeable about the role of photography in contemporary art. “MIA is increasingly a fair where art and awareness are activators of both market and values,” explains Francesca Malgara, artistic director. Now controlled by Fiere di Parma, a leading entity in the Italian exhibition scene, MIA is scheduled from Thursday, April 11 to Sunday, April 14, at the Allianz MiCo venue, a large convention center at 13 Via Gattamelata in Milan’s new Citylife district. The common thread of this year’s event will be Changing, the theme of change in our contemporary times: from climate emergencies caused by global warming, to civil rights, to the challenges posed by economic, technological and social transformation. The convergence of photography and collecting, will be featured in the exhibition The Shape of Relationships, curated by Rica Cerbarano. The exhibition will present more than 50 works, from important Italian private collections, through an exhibition itinerary that illustrates how the photographic image is the outcome of relationships, ties, connections.

Ryan Gutierrez è l’autrice di un giardino raffinato che celebra la bellezza della natura e offre un rifugio dalla frenesia della vita quotidiana

U

n giardino dall’estetica rilassata e sobriamente cool, che emana una tranquillità sofisticata e asseconda il tempo della natura in una spirale di esperienze che appaga e avvolge completamente i proprietari. È questo il frutto dell’operato di Ryan Gutierrez, socia fondatrice di GS Landscape Architecture Studio a Los Angeles, chiamata a dare forma e senso agli spazi esterni della nuova casa di una nota interior designer in un quartiere residenziale della città. Si trattava di un rettangolo pianeggiante di circa mezzo ettaro su cui esistevano alcune magnifiche Quercus lobata, autoctone, qualche olivo e alcune conifere, in prevalenza cedri, piantati dai precedenti proprietari, e che sono stati lasciati per ancorare il giardino al tempo e al luogo. Era fondamentale, racconta Gutierrez, “far emergere l’essenza dello spazio” per poter creare un giardino che suscitasse “il desiderio di trascorrere del tempo all’aperto e dove gli spazi esterni fossero tanto confortevoli e accoglienti quanto quelli interni. Volevamo creare profondità nello spazio e stanze distinte per invogliare a esplorare”. Un’affermazione che riflette la filosofia di design dello studio, espressa con coerenza in ogni progetto, pur nelle diversità, e che si fonda sulla considerazione attenta del luogo e delle peculiarità ambientali circostanti. Questo approccio si traduce anche in una ricercata selezione di materiali e piante, rispettosa della natura e dell’ambiente, confermando l’impegno per un’estetica che si armonizza con il contesto e in grado di donare una sensazione di equilibrio e bellezza.

Ryan Gutierrez ha modulato un giardino che riprende lo stile vagamente bohémien della casa, una proprietà degli anni 50 del secolo scorso ampliata e rimodernata, caratterizzata da rivestimenti in pietra naturale e listoni verticali color nero, grandi finestre modulari, alcune a tutta altezza, del medesimo colore, un tetto in metallo ondulato color bronzo scuro e porte del garage in legno di recupero. Ha usato un tratto leggero e informale ma con accenti di struttura e ha giocato con le texture, usando una palette cromatica elegante e fresca con bianchi, verdi, spesso in tonalità glauche, lilla e viola, con qualche tocco di rosa, più o meno intenso, che fa capolino qua e là in stagioni diverse. Il giardino ha una progressione dinamica e il suo disegno si fa più complesso passando dall’area anteriore a quella posteriore, dove era necessaria una suddivisione chiara e al contempo fluida degli spazi per avere luoghi conviviali contrapposti ad altri più intimi. Il tutto è raccordato tramite percorsi sinuosi fiancheggiati da bordure e aiuole in cui le piante delineano, ritmano e animano lo spazio, invitando a scoprirlo gradualmente.

Nel giardino di anteriore, esposto a sud e dominato da grandi alberature che proiettano un’ombra leggera, necessaria per durante i caldi mesi estivi in un luogo in cui la bella stagione sembra non avere mai fine, il disegno è infatti più semplice sul piano progettuale con grandi bordure geometriche nelle aree immediatamente prospicienti la grande casa. C’è tuttavia più struttura, data bossi e Olea europaea ‘Little Ollie’ (una cultivar di olivo bassa e compatta) tenuti a sfera, Agave ‘Blue Glow’, Rosmarinus officinalis (ora Salvia rosmarinus) e Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’, con alberi di olivo policormici disposti simmetricamente ai lati della porta di ingresso, tutti utili per ancorare una composizione di graminacee, quali Muhlenbergia rigens, Festuca mairei e Carex divulsa, con qualche ciuffo di Salvia leucantha ‘Santa Barbara’ e Crassula multicava, dai fiori primaverili bianco rosati a forma di stella che sembrano danzare leggeri sui loro steli sottili sopra le foglie. In questa zona il suono riveste un ruolo da non sottovalutare; il ghiaino che ricopre tutte le aree non occupate da piantagioni emette un piacevole scricchiolio quando calpestato, in una fontana in pietra l’acqua zampilla e rinfresca lo spirito, mentre la brezza produce un fruscio leggero quando sfiora foglie e ligule. L’ampio utilizzo del colore verde infonde una sensazione di distensione e di calma a chi entra.

che si affacciano sia sul fronte sia sul retro. Questa disposizione consente di contemplare simultaneamente entrambi gli scenari, che per questo motivo risultano coerenti, almeno nelle parti più prossime, pur con alcune modifiche dovute alla diversa esposizione: il giardino posteriore è infatti molto più assolato. Le bordure in prossimità della casa, vicine a terrazze arredate con tavolo e sedie o poltrone da relax, hanno sempre un sottofondo verde ma sono soffuse di toni lilla e viola, con un tocco di bianco a illuminare. Agave ‘Blue Glow’, A. ‘Blue Flame’, Olea europaea ‘Little Ollie’, Rosmarinus officinalis ed Euphorbia characias ssp. wulfenii si rincorrono tra Lavandula x intermedia ‘Provence’, L. x heterophylla e Nepeta x faassenii ‘Walker’s Low’ che fanno bella mostra di sé nei pressi di un olivo e di una vasca d’acqua. Poco più oltre sono lavande e rosmarino ad alternarsi a Gaura (ora Oenothera) lindheimeri ‘Geyser White’, Grevillea ‘Moonlight’, Romneya coulteri, Erigeron karvinskianus, Lavandula stoechas ‘Otto Quast’, Salvia clevelandii ‘Allen Chickering’, Leymus condensatus ‘Canyon Prince’, Festuca mairei e Lomandra longifolia ‘Breeze’, sempre nei pressi di un olivo e con qualche agave qua e là.

Il cuore del giardino posteriore è destinato al relax e all’intrattenimento: qui trovano posto una grande piscina con vasca idromassaggio inserita, una terrazza solarium, una pergola in legno di recupero con la zona pranzo e cucina all’aperto, in perfetto stile americano, e un camino esterno rivestito nella medesima pietra usata per la casa. Quest’ultimo spazio accogliente è ideale per sostare con gli amici quando le serate si fanno più fresche. Naturalmente, essendo la dimora di una interior designer, nulla è lasciato al caso e gli arredi sono stati progettati con cura per integrarsi con l’estetica della casa e del giardino. indispensabile per contrastare le varie altezze delle piante disposte intorno, soprattutto le grandi querce e gli olivi messi a dimora in punti strategici, e per godersi il piacere di camminare a piedi nudi o giocare. L’accesso avviene tramite camminamenti in ghiaino che iniziano dai lati perimetrali della proprietà e si snodano, fiancheggiati da aiuole e bordure informali, verso altre aree seguendo un design sinuoso, come contrappunto alla geometria della casa, della piscina e delle aree pavimentate. Le piante hanno altezze variabili per garantire privacy e dinamismo all’insieme, il cui planting design, sapientemente orchestrato, delinea composizioni con texture, forme e portamenti differenti, mantenendosi fedele alla palette cromatica delle bordure prossime alla casa, in un armonioso gioco di richiami. La Gutierrez ha creato una comunità vegetale basata anche sulle esigenze colturali delle piante, molte autoctone e altre provenienti da zone che sperimentano un clima simile a quello della California meridionale, scelte in base alla loro idoneità al clima e alle caratteristiche del sito e al modo in cui una pianta lavora con le altre piante del giardino. Se lungo i confini si intravvedono siepi di Ficus microcarpa e qualche Prunus ilicifolia per allontanare sguardi indiscreti, poco più avanti è un tripudio di Echium candicans, Vitex agnus-castus, Rhamnus californica e Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’ che fanno da sfondo a Festuca mairei, Carex divulsa, Muhlenbergia rigens, qualche Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’, Erigeron karvinskianus, Gaura lindheimeri ‘Geyser White’ e G. l.

‘Whirling Butterflies’. Queste piante sono usate anche nelle aiuole con aggiunte di Pennisetum spathiolatum, Sesleria autumnalis, Muhlenbergia capillaris, Artemisia californica, con Agave weberi e Romneya coulteri usate come accento. Nelle aiuole spiccano gli olivi che alzano il punto di osservazione e rendono alcuni angoli più discreti, in particolare uno con un focolare e sedie Acapulco, dove rilassarsi in tranquillità.

of the work of Ryan Gutierrez, co-founder of GS Landscape Architecture Studio in Los Angeles, called upon to shape and give meaning to the outdoor spaces of a well-known interior designer’s new home in a residential neighborhood of the city. It was a flat rectangular plot of about an acre with some magnificent native Quercus lobata, olive trees, and some conifers, mostly cedars, planted by the previous owners, left to anchor the garden to its time and place. According to Gutierrez, it was crucial to “bring out the essence of the space” to create a garden that would evoke “the desire to spend time outside, where the outdoor spaces are as comfortable and inviting as the indoors ones. We wanted to create some depth in the space , as well as distinct distinct garden rooms to draw one out into the garden.” This statement reflects the studio’s design philosophy, consistently expressed in every project, despite its diversity, and based on careful consideration of the site and surrounding environmental characteristics. This approach translates into a refined selection of materials and plants, respectful of nature and the environment, confirming a commitment to an aesthetic that harmonises with the context, providing a sense of balance and beauty. Ryan Gutierrez has created a garden that echoes the vaguely bohemian style of the 1950s house, expanded and modernised, featuring natural stone cladding, vertical black slats, large modular windows, some full-height, in the same color, a dark bronze corrugated metal roof, and reclaimed wood garage doors. She employed a light and informal touch, yet with structural accents, playing with textures and using an elegant and fresh colour palette of whites, greens, often in glaucous tones, lilacs, and purples, with occasional touches of pink, more or less intense, peeking out here and there in different seasons.

from the front to the back area, where a clear yet fluid subdivision of spaces was needed to create convivial areas as well as more intimate ones. All is interconnected through winding paths flanked by beds and borders in which the plants delineate, create rhythm, and animate the space, inviting gradual exploration.

In the front garden, facing south and dominated by large trees casting a light shadow, essential during the hot summer months in a place where the fine season seems to never end, the design is in fact simpler on a conceptual level with large geometric borders in the areas immediately facing the wide house. However, there is more structure, given by boxwoods and Olea europaea ‘Little Ollie’ (a low and compact olive cultivar) globes, Agave ‘Blue Glow’, Rosmarinus officinalis (now Salvia rosmarinus), and Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’, with multi-stemmed olive trees symmetrically arranged on either side of the entrance door, all anchoring a composition of grasses such as Muhlenbergia rigens, Festuca mairei, and Carex divulsa, with tufts of Salvia leucantha ‘Santa Barbara’, and Crassula multicava, with its pinkish-white star-shaped spring flowers that seem to dance lightly on their slender stems above the leaves. Sound plays a role not to be underestimated in this area; the gravel covering all the areas not occupied by plantings emits a pleasant crunch when trodden upon, in a stone fountain water gushes out and refreshes the spirit, while the breeze produces a gentle rustle as it brushes leaves and ligules. The extensive use of green colour instills a sense of relaxation and calm for those who enter.

The dwelling, positioned almost as a divider between the two sections of the garden, actually acts as a bridge thanks to the windows of the rooms overlooking both the front and back. This arrangement allows for simultaneously contemplating both scenarios, which, for this reason, appear coherent, at least in the parts closest to the house, albeit with some modifications due to different exposures: the back garden is much sunnier. The borders near the house and close to terraces, furnished with tables and chairs or relaxing armchairs, still have a green background but are suffused with lilac and purple tones, with a touch of white to illuminate. The heart of the back garden is dedicated to relaxation and entertainment: here, there is a large pool with an built in spa, a sun terrace, a reclaimed wood pergola housing an alfresco dining and kitchen area, in perfect American style, and an outdoor fireplace clad in the same stone as the house. The latter cozy space is ideal for lounging with friends when the evenings get cooler. Of course, being the home of an interior designer, nothing is left to chance, and the furnishings have been carefully designed to integrate with the aesthetics of the house and garden. The area is surrounded by a wide lawn, essential to counteract the varying heights of the plants arranged around, especially the large oaks and olives, strategically placed, and to enjoy walking barefoot or playing. Access is via gravel pathways that start from the boundary sides of the property and wind, flanked by informal beds and borders, towards other areas following a sinuous design as a counterpoint to the geometry of the house, pool, and paved areas. The plants have varying heights to ensure privacy and dynamism to the whole, whose skilfully orchestrated planting design outlines compositions with different textures, shapes and habits, staying true to the colour palette of the borders close to the house, in a harmonious interplay of references. Gutierrez has cultivated a plant community based on the specific needs of the plants, encompassing both native species and those originating from regions experiencing a climate akin to Southern California, chosen on the basis of their suitability to the climate, site characteristics, and the way a plant works with the other ones within the garden.

If along the boundaries glimpses of hedges, composed of Ficus microcarpa and some Prunus ilicifolia, to discreetly deter prying eyes can be caught, just a bit further, there is a profusion of Echium candicans, Vitex agnus-castus, 82

Rhamnus californica, and Westringia ‘Wynyabbie Gem’ serving as a backdrop to Festuca mairei, Carex divulsa, Muhlenbergia rigens, a few Miscanthus sinensis ‘Adagio’, Erigeron karvinskianus, Gaura lindheimeri ‘Geyser White’, and G. l. ‘Whirling Butterflies’. These plants are also incorporated into beds with additions such as Pennisetum spathiolatum, Sesleria autumnalis, Muhlenbergia capillaris, and Artemisia californica, complemented by accents of Agave weberi and Romneya coulteri. Olive trees stand out in the beds, elevating the viewpoint and providing discreet corners, especially one with Acapulco chairs and a firepit creating a tranquil space for relaxation.

Ryan Gutierrez has created a refined garden, designed for both entertaining and being entertained, where the mind can rest and the soul renew, expressing a vision of Eden with emotionally captivating visual beauty. ■

Armonia e bellezza senza tempo

L

a simmetria nel contesto della progettazione del giardino è un principio estetico fondamentale e particolarmente utile per creare un equilibrio visivo attraverso l’armonia delle forme e delle strutture. Questo concetto trae ispirazione dai principi classici dell’arte e dell’architettura e dona al giardino un senso di ordine e bellezza. Non a caso, infatti, Policleto, scultore greco vissuto nel V secolo a. C., definì la simmetria come la giusta proporzione che genera armonia. È, dunque, un elemento che sin dall’antichità è stato esplorato con minuzia per definire nel corso degli anni i principi di bellezza universale. Un esempio significativo è rappresentato dalla classica struttura del giardino all’italiana, il cui stile, caratterizzato da forme geometriche e da ripetizioni simmetriche, ha influenzato l’intera storia dell’arte dei giardini.

Quando affronto il progetto di un giardino parto spesso dallo studio delle simmetrie, indispensabili non solo per delineare i percorsi, le composizioni all’interno delle aiuole, la disposizione di alberi, vasi ed elementi d’arredo, ma anche per suggerire e valorizzare viste che diversamente rischierebbero di passare inosservate.

simmetriche, addolcite da eleganti bordure di graminacee e perenni. La ricerca di un equilibrio con il contesto è, come sempre, fondamentale: spesso sento la necessità di attenuare e rendere più fluide le linee troppo nette e di smorzare la geometria. La simmetria, quando integrata con attenzione e con la scelta oculata di piante adeguate, contribuisce a creare un giardino ordinato, elegante ed equilibrato, che contemporaneamente trasmette una piacevole sensazione di tranquillità.

In spazi lunghi e stretti, la simmetria dona un tocco affascinante e sofisticato, basti pensare alle lunghe bordure speculari con arbusti, erbacee perenni e graminacee che si replicano in maniera ordinata creando percorsi molto suggestivi. In questi casi addolcisco la rigidità delle linee attraverso i fogliami e le loro tessiture, dedico particolare attenzione all’introduzione di elementi verticali che rompano gli schemi orizzontali troppo formali. L’obiettivo è coniugare la simmetria formale con la vitalità e la dinamicità degli elementi verticali, creando un giardino che non solo risplende per la sua bellezza geometrica, ma che invita anche a esplorare e ad apprezzare la varietà e l’equilibrio nella sua struttura.

Piante come Allium, Agapanthus, Digitalis, Delphinium, Penstemon, Verbena bonariensis, Filipendula venusta ‘Rubra’, Macleaya cordata insieme ad alcune graminacee, quali Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’, Panicum virgatum, Andropogon gerardii e Stipa gigantea si rivelano perfette per creare movimento e armonizzare prospettive che altrimenti risulterebbero piatte e meno coinvolgenti. Nei punti chiave di transizione, invece, mi piace utilizzare sfere formali di bosso o di tasso, utili come punto focale, e che si rivelano perfette, soprattutto quando

Questa proporzione esatta, riscontrabile in natura e sin dai tempi dell’antica Grecia nella progettazione e nelle arti, conferisce un’armonia profonda alla percezione delle forme nel nostro cervello. È un aspetto affascinante, la cui perfezione sembrerebbe attestare il misterioso legame tra l’uomo e Dio, o più semplicemente tra universo e natura. ● Harmony and timeless beauty. Symmetry, within the context of garden design, represents a fundamental aesthetic principle, particularly valuable for achieving visual balance through the harmony of forms and structures. This concept draws inspiration from classical principles of art and architecture, lending the garden a sense of order and beauty. Notably, the ancient Greek sculptor Polyclitus, who lived in the 5th century BC, defined symmetry as the right proportion that generates harmony. It is, therefore, an element meticulously explored since antiquity to define over the years the principles of universal beauty.

A significant example is the classical structure of the Italian garden, characterized by geometric forms and symmetric repetitions, influencing the entire history of garden art. When undertaking a garden project, I often begin with the study of symmetries, essential not only for outlining paths, compositions within flowerbeds, the arrangement of trees, pots, and furnishings but also for suggesting and enhancing views that might otherwise go unnoticed. When space allows, I enjoy conceiving avenues with symmetric perspectives, softened by elegant borders of grasses and perennials. Striving for balance within the context 86

is, as always, crucial; I often feel the need to soften and make the lines less sharp, to dampen the geometry. Symmetry, when integrated with care and the judicious choice of suitable plants, contributes to creating an organized, elegant, and balanced garden that simultaneously imparts a pleasant sense of tranquility. In long and narrow spaces, symmetry adds a fascinating and sophisticated touch, such as the long mirrored borders with shrubs, herbaceous perennials, and grasses orderly replicating to create very suggestive paths. In these cases, I soften the rigidity of the lines through foliage and its textures, paying particular attention to the introduction of vertical elements that break the overly formal horizontal patterns. The aim is to combine formal symmetry with the vitality and dynamism of vertical elements, creating a garden that not only shines for its geometric beauty but also invites exploration and appreciation of variety and balance in its structure. Plants like Allium, Agapanthus, Digitalis, Delphinium, Penstemon, Verbena bonariensis, Filipendula venusta ‘Rubra,’ Macleaya cordata, along with some grasses such as Calamagrostis x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster,’ Panicum virgatum, Andropogon gerardii, and Stipa gigantea, prove perfect for creating movement and harmonizing perspectives that would otherwise appear flat and less engaging. In key transition points, I like to use formal spheres of boxwood or yew as focal points, especially effective when creating a clear contrast with the freer forms of what is around. Finally, when refining the details of proportions and symmetries, I always apply the principle of the golden ratio.

This exact proportion, found in nature and since ancient Greece in design and the arts, bestows a profound harmony to the perception of forms in our minds. It is a fascinating aspect whose perfection seems to affirm the mysterious connection between man and God, or more simply between the universe and nature. ■

Un’affascinante collezione di rose antiche e moderne impreziosisce un parco eclettico di circa tre ettari, che ospita anche importanti cimeli della storia dell’aeronautica

A

un passo dal Parco Regionale dei colli Euganei, a Due Carrare, il Castello di San Pelagio è costruito intorno a una torre di avvistamento fatta erigere dai Carraresi, signori illuminati di Padova e dei territori circostanti tra il 300 e 400, per proteggere i loro possedimenti dagli Scaligeri. La torre, coronata da una merlatura ghibellina a coda di rondine con una lanterna sulla sommità, faceva parte di un sistema difensivo che ne comprendeva altre quattro, ora distrutte, collegate tramite vie sotterranee. Una volta esaurita la funzione difensiva, con la sconfitta dei Carraresi a opera dei Veneziani e la conseguente loro damnatio memoriae, nel tempo due ali simmetriche furono aggiunte e al loro termine altrettanti edifici ortogonali che trasformarono il complesso in una vera e propria residenza nobiliare, tuttora abitata dai conti Zaborra, la cui famiglia è proprietaria dell’insediamento dal 700. Il Castello fu usato come quartiere generale dell’esercito durante i due conflitti mondiali e anche come campo volo durante il primo: da qui, il 9 agosto 1918 decollarono Gabriele D’Annunzio e la squadriglia ‘Serenissima’ per il celebre volo su Vienna. Dopo i necessari restauri conseguenti al degrado dovuto agli avvenimenti di quell’epoca, il complesso è tornato a risplendere e ospita un Museo del Volo.

Nella parte posteriore del Castello, tra il corpo di fabbrica principale con la torre e gli edifici posti ai lati, si sviluppa un parco suggestivo di Nelle pagine precedenti, una vista del giardino di rappresentanza con la vasca delle ninfee e da sinistra, la Catalpa bignonioides, macchie di rose, Yucca gloriosa e Magnolia grandiflora ‘Galissonnière’; nel prato un North American T-6 Texan, velivolo da addestramento avanzato degli anni 30. circa tre ettari, articolato in una serie di giardini che confluiscono uno dentro l’altro, cui si aggiunge uno segreto e appartato. Il più noto è il giardino di rappresentanza, o delle rose, con la classica spartimentazione in quattro aiuole con al centro una vasca rettangolare, nella quale in estate le ninfee aprono le loro corolle e brillano al sole. Intorno alla vasca, profumate Rosa rugosa su tre lati e deliziose Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Hana Kisoi’ dalle grandi corolle rosa perlato sul quarto delimitano le aiuole. Una bella collezione di rose, passione della proprietaria, antiche e moderne, scelte per il profumo, la grazia dei fiori, il portamento e le foglie, elemento spesso trascurato ma di non secondaria importanza, è ospitata all’interno di aiuole, sui muri del castello e su quelli di cinta. Grazie a una selezione accurata, da primavera all’autunno non c’è momento privo di fioriture.

Una Clematis armandii si arrampica su una Catalpa bignonioides di inizio 900, precedendone, in aprile, coi suoi fiori candidi e profumatissimi, la fioritura, sotto lo sguardo vigile di un grande cipresso. Questi alberi sono bilanciati otticamente nell’aiuola opposta da grandi Magnolia grandiflora ‘Galissonnière’ il cui profumo dei fiori permea l’aria a inizio estate. Un cancello immette nell’ombroso viale di carpini, con esemplari a maturità o senescenti, dagli affascinanti

fusti contorti, accanto a piante più giovani. Il viale culmina con la montagnola della Ghiacciaia ma prima, lungo un lato, grandi Rosa banksiae precedono una grande peschiera di forma irregolare con una penisola, che di recente è stata impreziosita da un romantico pergolato e da quattro berceau rivestiti di glicini in colori digradanti. Sui lati della peschiera, rose si arrampicano su apposite strutture che si sostituiscono ai muri, mentre al suo interno Nuphar lutea, come piccole perle gialle, vivacizzano le acque. Sull’altro lato della carpinata si trovano due labirinti in x Cupressocyparis leylandii collegati da un ponticello. Il primo, correlato al tema del volo, a Icaro e al mito del Minotauro, è un dedalo con pareti alte quasi tre metri con vicoli ciechi; il secondo, più piccolo e recente, ha un percorso unico che conduce a un centro disseminato di specchi ed è dedicato a Gabriele D’Annunzio e al titolo del suo romanzo Forse che sì forse che no, ispirato a un motto che si trova in un labirinto dipinto su un soffitto del Palazzo Ducale di Mantova. Oltre l’edificio ortogonale di destra, guardando il Castello, si trova il giardino segreto, quasi un’oasi privata; è un arboreto in cui spiccano una delle prime Lagerstroemia indica giunte in Italia a fine 700, un antico Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Pendulum’ che ombreggia una vasca ovale anticamente 93

riempita con le acque termali della zona, vari tigli e quattro aiuole con arbusti, rose ed erbe aromatiche. Sulle mura, rose, uno dei fili conduttori del giardino insieme al volo, glicini, gelsomini e clematidi. C’è anche un vecchio bosso, senescente e malandato, che non viene stressato da cure eccessive né abbattuto: a San Pelagio la proprietaria ha scelto di non sostituirsi alla natura, ma di rispettarla e di godere della bellezza che le regala. l Il Castello di San Pelagio fa parte del Network Grandi Giardini Italiani.

From the daring flight to the roses. An enchanting collection of ancient and modern roses, carefully chosen by the owner for their fragrance, the grace of their flowers, and their growth habit, enhances an eclectic park of about three hectares, which also houses significant relics from the history of aviation.

Just a stone’s throw from the Regional Park of the Euganean Hills, in Due Carrare, the Castle of San Pelagio is built around a watchtower erected by the Carraresi, enlightened lords of Padua and the surrounding territories between the 14th and 15th centuries, to protect their possessions from the Scaligeri. The tower, Ghibelline swallow-tailed battlements with a lantern on the top, was part of a defensive system that included four other ones, now destroyed, connected by underground passages. Once the defensive function was exhausted, with the defeat of the Carraresi by the Venetians and their subsequent damnatio memoriae, two symmetrical wings were added over time, each ending in orthogonal buildings, transforming the complex into a true noble residence. It is still inhabited by the Zaborra counts, whose family has owned the settlement since the 18th century. The Castle served as the army headquarters o during both World Wars and as an airstrip during the First World War; it was from here that Gabriele D’Annunzio and the ‘Serenissima’ squadron took off for the famous flight over Vienna on 9 August 1918. After the necessary restorations following the degradation caused by those events, the complex has returned to its former glory and now houses a Flight Museum. After much-needed restoration following the deterioration caused by the events of that time, the complex is now resplendent again and houses a Museo del Volo.

In the rear of the Castle, between the main building with the tower and the buildings on the sides, unfolds an enchanting park of approximately three hectares, articulated into a series of gardens that flow one into another, with the addition of a secluded and secret one. The most renowned is the representative garden, or rose garden, featuring the classic division into four flower beds with a rectangular basin at the center, where in summer water lilies unfold their petals, shining in the sunlight. Around the basin, fragrant Rosa rugosa on three sides and delightful Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Hana Kisoi’ with large pearly pink corollas on the fourth, delineate the flower beds.

A beautiful collection of roses, a passion of the owner, both ancient and modern, selected for their fragrance, the grace of their flowers, habit, and leaves – an element often overlooked but of non-secondary importance – is housed within flower beds, on the castle and boundary walls. Thanks to a meticulous selection, from spring to autumn, there is no moment devoid of blossoms. A Clematis armandii climbs a Catalpa bignonioides from the early 1900s, preceding its bloom in April with its candid and highly fragrant flowers, under the watchful eye of a large cypress. These trees are optically balanced in the opposite flower bed by large Magnolia grandiflora ‘Galissonnière,’ whose scent of flowers permeates the air in early summer. A gate 94

opens into the shaded avenue of hornbeams, featuring mature or senescent specimens with fascinating twisted trunks, alongside younger plants. The avenue culminates with the mound of the Icehouse, but before reaching it, along one side, large Rosa banksiae precede a large irregularly shaped fishpond with a peninsula. Recently adorned with a romantic pergola and four berceaus covered in wisteria with graduating colors, the pond enhances its charm. Along the sides of the pond, roses climb on specially designed structures, replacing the surrounding walls. Inside the pond, Nuphar lutea, like small yellow pearls, enliven the waters. On the other side of the hornbeam avenue, two labyrinths in x Cupressocyparis leylandii are connected by a footbridge. The first one, related to the theme of flight, Icarus, and the myth of the Minotaur, is a maze with walls almost three meters high featuring dead ends; the second one, smaller and more recent, has a unique path leading to a scattered center of mirrors and is dedicated to Gabriele D’Annunzio and the title of his novel ‘Forse che sì forse che no’ (Perhaps yes, perhaps no), inspired by a motto found in a labyrinth painted on a ceiling of the Ducal Palace of Mantua. Beyond the right-angled building, facing the Castle, lies the secret garden, almost a private oasis; it is an arboretum showcasing one of the first Lagerstroemia indica tbrought to Italy in the late 18th century, an ancient Styphnolobium japonicum ‘Pendulum’ shading an oval basin once filled with thermal waters from the area, various linden trees, and four beds with shrubs, roses, and aromatic herbs. On the walls, roses, one of the garden’s guiding elements along with flight, wisterias, jasmine, and clematis. There is also an old boxwood, senescent and somewhat worn, not stressed by excessive care or felled: at San Pelagio, the owner has chosen not to replace nature but to respect it and enjoy the beauty it gives her. ■ The Castle of San Pelagio is part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani Network.

el panorama vegetale poche piante possono vantare una ricchezza di pregi comparabile a quella dei viburni. Sono arbusti poliedrici, versatili e straordinariamente adattabili e rappresentano un’espressione della ciclicità stagionale. Le loro spettacolari fioriture, tipicamente primaverili ma talvolta anche fino tardo-invernali e spesso con fragranze avvolgenti, sono generose e a volte si ripetono in periodi successivi. Le specie caducifoglia, con le loro textures coinvolgenti e le cangianti sfumature autunnali, catturano lo sguardo grazie alle vivide tonalità di rosso e arancione e persino brunastre, divenendo punti focale che arricchiscono il giardino anche nei mesi autunnali. Mantengono un'elevata attrattiva visiva pure in inverno, grazie alla presenza di bacche vibranti che spaziano dal rosso vermiglio lucente al nero-blu, particolarmente evidenti su rami spogli.

La varietà nelle forme e dimensioni delle diverse specie consente, inoltre, una vasta libertà compositiva.

Non mancano infatti, in questo genere, arbusti maestosi come i Viburnum plicatum, in numerose cultivar, dal portamento allargato e rami che si estendono morbidamente a palchi, su cui, in maggio, fra un fogliame di un fresco verde chiaro, campeggiano magnifiche infiorescenze generalmente piatte, di color bianco puro o avorio o ancora sfumate di rosa, che sembrano un merletto o, più raramente, tondeggianti; la stessa specie contempla anche cultivar a portamento più eretto e piramidale. Dimensioni alquanto contenute in altezza e portamento compatto e tondeggiante si trovano invece nel sempreverde V. davidii, dalle sue splendide foglie verde scuro e lucido, attraversate da nervature simmetriche che donano eleganza, accompagnandosi a magnifiche bacche nero-blu. Non manca gentilezza, invero, nel portamento di alcuni V. opulus, i cui rami s'incurvano sotto il peso della ricca fioritura di delicati globi bianchi e V. carlesii, di altezza più ridotta, dalla forma tondeggiante e allargata che, a inizio primavera, si riempie di bottoni fiorali color rosa molto intenso, che si schiudono in fiori bianchi e profumati.

Non si possono non citare il magnifico V. bodnantense ‘Dawn’ dalla aggraziata fioritura invernale rosa su rami spogli, abbondante e intensamente profumata nè V. farreri che fiorisce, anche lui profumando, da novembre e continua fino a marzo. Merita una menzione speciale V. sargentii ‘Onondaga’, le cui particolari foglie soffuse di marrone e rosse in autunno e le infiorescenze piatte, con grandi fiori sterili disposti all’esterno e fiorellini fertili all’interno che si aprono da bottoni fiorali rosso bordeaux mantenendo una tonalità rosata, lo rendono uno spettacolo indimenticabile.

Viburnums, beautiful and versatile. In the plant kingdom,

few species can boast a richness of virtues comparable to the ones of viburnums. They are versatile, varied shrubs, extraordinarily adaptable, and a true expression of seasonal cycles. Their spectacular blooms, typically in spring but sometimes extending into late winter, often with enveloping fragrances, are generous and occasionally repeat in subsequent periods. Deciduous species, with their enthralling textures and changing autumnal hues, capture attention with vivid shades of red, orange, and even brown, becoming focal points that enrich the garden even during autumn. They maintain high visual appeal even in winter, thanks to vibrant berries ranging from bright vermilion to black-blue, particularly noticeable on bare branches. The variety in forms and sizes of different species also allows for considerable compositional freedom.

Indeed, in this genus, majestic shrubs like Viburnum plicatum are not lacking. Available in numerous cultivars, they boast a spreading habit with branches that gently arch, adorned in May with magnificent, flat inflorescences in pure white, ivory, or occasionally tinged with pink, resembling lace or, more rarely, taking on round shapes. The same species also offers cultivars with a more upright and pyramidal habit. Dimensions quite contained in height and a compact, rounded habit are instead found in the evergreen V. davidii, with its splendid dark green and glossy leaves, crossed by symmetric veins that provide elegance, accompanied by magnificent black-blue berries. Indeed, there is a graceful charm in the habit of some V. opulus, whose branches bend under the weight of delicate white globular blooms, and in V. carlesii, shorter in height, with rounded, spreading form. In early spring, it fills with intensely pink floral buds that unfold into white and fragrant flowers.

Noteworthy is the magnificent Viburnum bodnantense 'Dawn', with its graceful winter flowering in pink on bare branches, which is both abundant and intensely fragrant. Equally deserving of mention is V. farreri, which blooms, perfuming the air, from November and continues until March. A special mention goes to V. sargentii 'Onondaga,' whose distinctive leaves suffused with brown and becoming red in autumn, flat inflorescences featuring large sterile flowers on the outside and fertile florets on the inside, opening from dark red buds while maintaining a pinkish hue, make it an unforgettable spectacle. The viburnum genus truly offers a wealth of species, hybrids, and cultivars. For this reason, Villegiardini asked Vittorio Consonni, a partner at Vivai Nord and considered the Italian expert on viburnums, to recommend a selection of the most beautiful and reliable ones. ■

Strelitzia dal fascino vintage Con i loro fiori spettacolari le Strelitzia regalano al giardino un tocco tropicale che sfida le mode

H

o sempre avuto una passione per il vintage; scarpe, vestiti, mobili, portano con loro il fascino delle forme e dei materiali che durano nel tempo. Quando ho iniziato a lavorare con le piante, mi sono resa conto che la stessa cosa vale anche per alcune di loro. Ricordo bene le serre di Strelitzia reginae, piene di fiori arancio luminoso durante l’inverno e di foglie verde-argento dritte come spade durante l’estate. Un’immagine fissa negli anni, fino a quando non è arrivata la moda delle piante tropicali e le serre si sono svuotate per andare a popolare locali famosi, lussuosi giardini con piscina e alberghi cinque stelle. Conosciuta come uccello del paradiso, S. reginae sfoggia fiori spettacolari che ricordano il becco di un volatile tropicale.

Chiusi inizialmente in una spata coriacea perfettamente orizzontale, si svelano e si innalzano con tre sepali di un vivace giallo-arancio e 106

altrettanti petali di un blu intenso, creando un contrasto sorprendente che li rende unici nel mondo vegetale. Nel linguaggio dei fiori, Strelitzia simboleggia il successo e la magnificenza, rendendola la scelta ideale per celebrare traguardi importanti.

Apprezzata per il tocco tropicale che riesce a dare in qualsiasi giardino, è anche una pianta robusta, resistente e versatile, adatta a climi secchi o coltivabile in vaso in ambienti più freschi e interni.

Per crescere rigogliosa richiede un terreno ricco di sostanza organica, ben drenato e una posizione soleggiata, con un’irrigazione costante durante la fase di crescita. È originaria dell’Africa meridionale e appartiene alla famiglia delle Strelitziaceae. In condizioni ottimali, questa pianta può raggiungere altezze di due metri e grazie alle sue robuste radici tende a colonizzare il terreno, diventando un fitto cespuglio. Strelitzia nicolai, invece, con i suoi falsi tronchi generati dalla base delle foglie, simili a quelle del banano, negli anni può arrivare anche a dieci metri, diventando maestosa, una vera scultura vegetale, ingentilita dai petali bianchi dei fiori che sembrano uccelli pronti al volo.

Meno conosciuta è Strelitzia juncea, un’erbacea perenna rizomatosa che ha un aspetto spiccatamente diverso dalle altre. Si distingue per i suoi piccioli fogliari simili a giunchi, privi di lamina, che occasionalmente possono presentare all’apice una piccola fogliolina, mentre le sue infiorescenze sono simili a quelle di S. reginae, ma trovandosi su piccioli più bassi crea un particolare effetto ornamentale ‘vedo-non-vedo’. Anche lei può raggiungere l’altezza di circa due metri. ●

Strelitzia: Vintage Charm. With their spectacular flowers, Strelitzia add a tropical touch that defies trends. I’ve always had a passion for vintage; shoes, clothes, furniture—they carry the charm of enduring shapes and materials. When I began working with plants, I realised the same holds true for some of them. I vividly recall the green-silver leaves and bright orange flowers of Strelitzia reginae in the greenhouses during winter and summer. An enduring image until the tropical plant trend emptied the greenhouses, migrating to famous venues, luxurious poolside gardens, and five-star hotels. I vividly remember the Strelitzia reginae greenhouses, full of bright orange flowers during the winter and silver-green leaves as straight as swords during the summer. An enduring image over the years, until the tropical plant fad arrived and greenhouses emptied to populate famous venues, luxurious poolside gardens, and five-star hotels.

Known as the bird of paradise, S. reginae showcases dramatic flowers resembling the beak of a tropical bird. Initially enclosed in a perfectly horizontal leathery spathe, they unfold, revealing three vivid orange-yellow sepals and an equal number of intense blue petals, creating a striking contrast that makes them unique in the plant world. In the language of flowers, Strelitzia symbolizes success and magnificence,

3 making it the ideal choice for celebrating significant milestones. Appreciated for the tropical touch it adds to any garden, it is also a hardy, resilient, and versatile plant suitable for dry climates or potted cultivation in cooler environments and indoors. To thrive, it requires organic-rich, well-drained soil and a sunny location, with regular watering during the growth phase. Native to Southern Africa, it belongs to the Strelitziaceae family. Under optimal conditions, this plant can reach heights of two meters and, thanks to its sturdy roots, tends to colonize the soil, becoming a dense bush.

Strelitzia nicolai, on the other hand, with its false trunks generated from the base of the leaves, resembling banana ones, can, over the years, lead to heights of up to ten metres, becoming majestic, a true vegetal sculpture, softened by the white petals of its flowers that look like birds ready for flight. Less known is Strelitzia juncea, a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial with a distinctly different appearance. It is characterized by its leaf petioles resembling rushes, devoid of leaf lamina, which occasionally may have a small leaflet at the apex, while its inflorescences are similar to those of S. reginae. However, being on lower petioles, it creates a unique ‘peek-a-boo’ ornamental effect. It can too reach a height of about two meters. ■

Nuova vita nel giardino Con VerdeMura ogni anno si apre la stagione delle grandi mostre di giardinaggio e vita all’aria aperta

a venerdì 5 a domenica 7 aprile sulle Mura Storiche di Lucca, sui bastioni San Regolo e La Libertà, Lucca Crea organizza un evento che raccoglie poco meno di 200 espositori fra vivaisti e artigiani di qualità, e che può vantare anche espositori stranieri.

La pianta simbolo di questa edizione di VerdeMura, la sedicesima, è il tulipano. Ci saranno allestimenti, incontri e una mostra di tulipani in vaso, per conoscerli meglio ed apprezzarne tutta la bellezza, dalle specie botaniche alle cultivar più recenti, passando per quelle che hanno fatto la storia di questo fiore noto a tutti, anche per la follia che accompagnò il fenomeno della tulipomania. A proporre i tulipani in vaso è Christian Shejbal di Floriana Bulbose che festeggia nel 2024 i venticinque anni di attività come vivaista. La scelta dei bulbi avverrà all’insegna dello slogan Nuova Vita Nel Giardino perché il risveglio primaverile di queste piante, dopo mesi di stasi, ogni anno 110

rappresenta un miracolo capace di continuare a sorprendere. Nei sotterranei dell’Orto Botanico la mostra del fiore reciso Camellia 24 per la prima volta quest’anno prevede una partecipazione allargata che coinvolgerà dodici espositori fra istituzioni, vivai, associazioni e giardini di ville storiche private. Non solo una mostra per appassionati ed esperti ma anche per il grande pubblico che potrà votare il fiore più bello presentato in mostra. Due volumi di caratura internazionale, inoltre, saranno presentati al pubblico. Il primo è Modern Medicine From Plants di Henry Oakeley, membro del Royal College of Physicians di Londra, del cui giardino di piante medicinali. Si tratta di un testo unico nel suo genere, che descrive in dettaglio le piante impiegate per la produzione di moderni medicinali soggetti a prescrizione, il loro meccanismo d’azione e il campo d’efficacia. Il secondo è Splendid Sasanquas, an international ornament, presentato dal professor Gianmario Motta, Presidente della International Camellia Society. Opera di più autori e pubblicato in occasione del 60° anniversario dell’International Camellia Society, il testo vuole ridare a questa specie l’importanza e l’attenzione che merita. craftsmanship, and can also boast foreign exhibitors. The symbolic plant of this edition of VerdeMura, the sixteenth, is the tulip. Installations, meetings, and an exhibition of potted tulips allow attendees to get to know them better and appreciate their beauty, from botanical species to the latest cultivars, including those that have made the history of this flower known to all, also for the madness that accompanied the tulipomania phenomenon. To provide the potted tulips is Christian Shejbal of Floriana Bulbose, celebrating his twenty-five years as a nurseryman in 2024. The choice of bulbs will follow the slogan 'New Life in the Garden' because the spring awakening of these plants, after months of dormancy, represents a miracle capable of continuing to surprise every year. In the underground chambers of the Botanical Garden, the 'Camellia 24' cut flower exhibition anticipates broad participation this year, involving twelve exhibitors, including institutions, nurseries, associations, and gardens of private historic villas. Not only an exhibition for enthusiasts and experts but also for the general public, which can vote for the most beautiful flower presented at the show. Two internationally acclaimed volumes will also be presented to the public. The first one is 'Modern Medicine From Plants' by Henry Oakeley, a member of the Royal College of Physicians in London, whose medicinal plant garden is the subject of the book. It is a unique text that provides detailed descriptions of plants used in the production of modern prescription medicines, their mechanisms of action, and their field of efficacy. The second volume is 'Splendid Sasanquas, an International Ornament,'presented by Professor Gianmario Motta, President of the International Camellia Society. Authored by multiple contributors and published on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the International Camellia Society, the text aims to restore the importance and attention that this species deserves. During the event, the admission ticket to VerdeMura allows visitors to explore the Botanical Garden of Lucca, a place of peace and wonder, a kind of world tour through the rare trees present. ■ 111

L’emozione del legno nel rispetto dell’ambiente La valorizzazione della bellezza naturale e la sostenibilità si incontrano nei listoni Cadorin con contrassegno Natur, ricavati da tronchi che non hanno subito eliminazioni inutili o scarti elevati

atur è il contrassegno che certifica i listoni a tre strati in legno massiccio che presentano il massimo livello di ecosostenibililità e salvaguardia dell’aspetto naturale del legno. “Il principio alla base della certificazione” spiega Rita Cadorin, CEO, “è quello di una drastica riduzione degli scarti di produzione. Generalmente, nel processo di selezione delle tavole, buona parte del tronco, dal 40 al 50 per cento, non viene utilizzato in quanto ritenuto inidoneo. Questo perché nell’ottica della ricerca della massima purezza della texture, elementi naturali come nodi, venature, fiammature e fibrature vengono ritenuti ‘imperfezioni’, a meno che non rispettino precise caratteristiche di omogeneità e uniformità delle tonalità”. Un approccio ‘glamour’ che, se da un lato è causa di un grande spreco, dall’altro determina un livello di uniformità e standardizzazione che esclude dalla selezione proprio quelle parti del tronco che costituiscono il fascino unico e inimitabile del legno: “i nodi, che sono la memoria di un germoglio; le fibrature, accentuale o scure; o ancora i toni di pasta e gli aspetti lignei più marcati che sono il risultato dell’assorbimento dei sali minerali ricevuti dalla pianta nella crescita oppure dalla linfa che l’ha percorsa, a seconda che abbia avuto acqua di cui nutrirsi o invece abbia conosciuto periodi di siccità. La bellezza del legno non sta solo nella regolarità delle venature, ma anche nel fascino della storia che racconta”. I listoni Natur lasciano così esprimere la materia ed esaltano l’intima natura della materia lignea, valorizzando ogni singolo dettaglio del tessuto legnoso che, invece di essere scartato, diviene un esclusivo elemento di pregio e distintività di questa proposta.

Il progetto Natur si pone in piena continuità con a filosofia dell’azienda che da quasi 100 anni trasforma il legno con arte, dedizione e maestria in piena sintonia con l’ambiente. “Come famiglia e come azienda siamo nati green”, aggiunge Rita Cadorin. “Mio padre mi ha sempre insegnato che nessun pezzo di legno si deve buttare. and enhance the intimate nature of the wood material, enhancing each and every detail of the woody fabric that, instead of being discarded, becomes an exclusive element of value and distinctiveness of this proposal. The Natur project stands in full continuity with a philosophy of the company, which for nearly 100 years has been transforming wood with art, dedication and craftsmanship in full harmony with the environment. “As a family and as a company we were born green,” adds Rita Cadorin. “My father always taught me that no piece of wood should be thrown away. That is why, since 1984, we have used all production waste, such as shavings, to fuel the thermal energy production plant.” In addition, much of the raw material processed by Cadorin comes from FSC® or PEFC

TM chains of custody, while the finishes used are from oils, natural waxes or VOC-control varnishes. All plank structures are formaldehyde-free (E1CARB) and, since 2011, a photovoltaic system, installed on the roof of the factory, generates clean electricity, saving the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
