I imagine this report finds everyone with a great start to the New Year. I look forward to meeting up with everyone to hear about their new calves hitting the ground or will be soon.
It looks like in the long range forecast that it is supposed to warm up some. I’m sure everyone is like me and want it to warm up some and have no wind at all. All we can do though is hope. The cattle market has been strong into the New Year, all we can do is wish they will stay strong right through the entire year.
I’m sure some breeders are busy trying to get bulls ready for bull sale season while trying to calve at the same time. Hopefully there are plenty of guys looking for bulls and females this spring, to replenish the cattle that were sold in the drought years to increase the cattle numbers in Manitoba again.
Good luck to everyone with their calving and get plenty of rest whenever you can. We will see everyone down the road at sales coming up this spring and at all the shows that are planned throughout the year. I expect we will have green pastures again this spring and good luck to everyone with any seeding you got planned as well.
Hey Everyone! In December we had a meeting, and had six of our juniors attend, we discussed fundraising ideas and Bonanza 2024. We are planning on having another meeting towards the end of March-beginning of April. Hope everyone has good luck with their calving this year, and all the calves stay happy and healthy!
Thanks to everyone that attended the MHA AGM and to Michael Latimer for coming to our AGM. We did have a CHA director meeting since, some of the highlights are:
Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) conference will be coming to Calgary in July of 2023. This conference includes several in-depth seminars of the latest technology and advancement in the beef industry. There are also tours after the conference which would be very interesting to go on.
We had a presentation from the CBBC/CBIN representative on the update of their work on the new EPD system that we may be switching to. Their work is very interesting and a lot of it is producer input.
A part of the Strategic Marketing Plan was to improve the carcass quality of the Hereford Breed. Last year all breeders should have received a report called “The Carcass Merit Decision Tool”. The report listed all the bulls that you currently use. We ask that you look through this report and look at your sire’s carcass EPDs and try to improve your bull battery carcass numbers by 10%. So with that in mind, bull sale season is on, so be sure to check carcass numbers on your possible future herd sire.
Your new CHA president was elected, so with that congratulations to Chad Nicholas of Saskatchewan on becoming the new CHA president. Also congratulations to Janice Tapp of BC on becoming the new Vice President.
After nine years of being your CHA director, I retired and your new director is Janelle Gulka of Twin View Polled Herefords. I wish her all the best and I am sure she will be a great addition to the CHA board, and representative for the MHA. Congratulations Janelle and thank you. With that being said thank you to everyone who helped me during my term.
Good luck calving everyone. Hope to see everyone down the road.

The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Doug Troop on his 50 Year Pin. Born on January 1, 1955 in Portage La Prairie, MB, Doug Troop was raised and worked on the family farm with his father Orval until 1984 when he established his own operation in Brandon under the tattoo PNG, later changing it to DTHF in the 80’s.
He bought his first purebred Hereford when he was just 14 years old from Robert Kerr in Portage and has built his numbers up since then, calving out 180 cows in 2022.
His education began in a one room country school, Burnside Elementary School, through Grade 5. He attended high school at Portage Collegiate. He married Jayne in 1981 and the couple raised two children, Kaitlin and Adam. Kaitlin and Adam were both involved in the local 4-H beef club and Kaitlin participated in Bonanza at Virden.
In the early years working with Orval, he showed a bull at the Denver Stock Show. Since then, Doug has shown cattle at Brandon Ag Ex and Agribition as well as at summer fairs, field days, the Lundar Bull Sale, Brandon Bull Sale and the Cream of the Crop Bull Sale. He started a bull sale in Neepawa specializing in Hereford bulls and replacement Hereford and Black Baldie females. He has also hosted an annual production sale selling bred heifers off the farm the past few years. Doug has sold cattle to Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Russia, Kazakhstan, New Mexico and North Dakota. This past fall Doug had his complete herd dispersal.
A life member of the Canadian Hereford Association, Doug has had Reserve Senior Champion Bull and Reserve Junior Champion Bull at Agribition. He also raised the sire of a two-time Agribition Champion Bull, DTHF TANK 64T. He was named Premier Breeder at the Manitoba Livestock Expo in 2011 and has raised the Champion Bred Heifer, Champion Heifer Calf and Champion Bull Calf at Manitoba Field Days.
He has also been called on to judge the Southeast Saskatchewan Field Day, summer fairs and Brandon’s Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Steer Show and he has put on clinics for judging and showmanship for a variety of 4-H clubs.
Elected to the Manitoba Hereford Association Board of Directors in 1984, he has spent 25 years on the board including a three-year stint as president. He initiated the first President’s Cup (Manitoba Hereford Association’s golf tournament). Doug has served on three Bonanza planning committees and hosted MHA Field Days and tours. He was the breed rep and barn boss for AgEx and was also a Hereford breed rep for the Douglas Test Station. Doug was also a founding member of the Good as Gold Sale which is now one of Canada’s longest running consignment sales, having just hosted its 29th sale in 2022. He spent four years selecting cattle for the Good as Gold Sale and managed the sale for two years.
Many international guests have toured the farm including breeders from Australia, North Dakota, Kansas, England, Germany and most Canadian provinces. Congratulations Doug!
The MHA is pleased to award the 2023 Stewardship award to Michelle Rimke. Michelle’s family has been involved in raising Herefords since the 1950s. Michelle and Albert began their involvement with Herefords in 1990.
Michelle was a CJHA delegate while she was a Junior, and was the chair of the CJHA calendar, which she did for a few years. She was a Manitoba Hereford Queen in 1985. In 1988 Michelle was the co-chairperson as a Junior for Bonanza that year. She was on the Bonanza committee in 1999. Michelle became co-chairperson of Bonanza in 2006, 2013, and what was supposed to be Bonanza 2020. She will be on the Bonanza committee for 2024.
Michelle has worked quietly behind the scenes to support the MHA in other areas and has proven a valuable resource. She has prepared forms for various Feild Days and MOE Shows at different venues and recorded and submitted results. She has shown her artistic side with the painting of the Commercial Breeders sign, Michele has often responded to questions at AGMs, by quietly providing the sought after
information. In the past, she also prepared the AGM booklets. She has kept and still keeps, the MHA family informed on various individual members over the years.
The highlights of her involvement over the years were her, and Albert’s trips to Denmark and New Zealand to represent and promote Canadian Herefords internationally. We look forward to Michelle’s continued involvement and thank her for her past involvement.
The CHA is please to present Phil & Vivian Jones with their 25 Year Membership Pin.
The first purebred Hereford of Phil & Vivian’s was purchased at the Good as Gold Sale in December of 1996. The cow was from the herd of Don Sullivan and Doug Troop. The was followed by the purchase of a purebred bull at the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair in March of 1997 from Roseland Polled Herefords.
Phil expanded the herd from various sales around the province and Saskatchewan. The herd was capped at around 40 head. Twelve years ago, the herd was dispersed with the majority going to Lock Spur Livestock, as no one in the family wished to carry on the farm.
Phil & Vivian continue to be involved with the MHA in various ways. They look after the Hereford booth and attend various events such as Ag Days, Cattle Sales and Ag Ex. Congratulations Phil & Vivian!
to Twin View Polled Herefords for the donation heifer at the Good as Gold Sale in November! The winning ticket went to Dan Gullett and he graciously donated the heifer back with half the proceeds going to STARS and half going to the MHA. The heifer was purchased by Albert, Jay and Levi Rimke. Thank you to Twin View, Dan, the Rimke’s and everyone that bought a ticket to support the MHA.
If you’re interested in looking after the MHA Social Media, let Bobbi Rankin know - rankinbb@goinet.com.
Phil & Vivian Jones will continue to attend Ag Days with the MHA Booth. We are now looking for an interested person to take the booth to other venues around the province. If you are interested, please contact Andrew Kopeechuk for more info at rskfarms@ hotmail.com.

Jack was born on July 31st, 1934 to Gertrude and Watson Cochrane in Russell, and passed away peacefully in Grunthal, MB on June 22nd, 2022. He was predeceased by his mom in 1950, dad in 1994, his brother Harry in 2000 and Virginia in 2015, as well as, many Aunt’s, Uncle’s and cousins. He will be missed dearly by his loving wife of 58 years, Roberta, son Roger and daughter Susan (Earl) Haut and many others.
Jack loved farming, that was his passion and he enjoyed every aspect of it. He knew he wanted to farm at a young age and that is what he did. They farmed grain and had Polled Herefords from 1919-2007, then Red Angus from 1985-2007. They sold cattle to most Canadian provinces, 6 US states and exported to Japan and the Czech Republic. In 2007, they sold the farm and retired to Russell.
He also loved his family and friends; what a group they were, there were many weekends and road trips spent/ taken together. Mainly always with a cattle show/sale attached to the trip! He loved to travel, but being a cattle/grain farmer never left much time for that! Jack loved to curl and spent a lot of time at Silverton Curling Rink, in the last few decades he loved watching bonspiels on TV. Jack also loved history, reading and writing in his diary. We hope Jack is resting easy, he will be missed beyond measure!
Wendell passed away at Carman Hospital with family by his side on December 18, 2022, following a lengthy battle with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents Will and Hilda, and leaves to mourn his children, siblings, and a long list of nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.
Wendall was raised on a farm near Barnsley alongside his brothers, Terry and Gord, and sister Tracy. Wendell attended the former Tracy School until grade four, and then Elm Creek School up to grade ten. After this, he dropped out to pursue his life-long passion of farming and raising cattle.
When he was about 25 years old, Wendell left home and moved to a farm at Ridgeville, where he continued to grow his herd of registered horned Hereford cattle – a lifelong endeavour. He was also a skilled horseman, and during this period of his life entered team roping events across southern Manitoba. He would continue to raise and train horses throughout his entire life.
Wendell moved back home briefly before settling down on a farmyard in between St. Claude and Haywood, which was little more than a field of grass when he arrived in the mid ‘80s. He had officially established Bar None Cattle in 1973, but also raised horses, dogs, and pigs at different times along the way.
Wendell met Loriane Dheilly in 1992, and the two got married the following year. The couple had two children together: Will (Billy) was born in 1994, and Sierra arrived in 1996. Wendell’s children were his pride and joy, and of all his endeavours, fatherhood was most important to him.
Through the cattle business, and a network of coffee shops, Wendell made friends far and wide. His work and life were inseparable, and he continued to raise cattle until illness forced him into an ‘early’ retirement at age 70. Wendall will be missed by many!
