From the Editor
We are already into fall and before we know it we will be celebrating Christmas! I can’t believe we have made it this far.
2021 has been just as crazy as 2020, however, we have been able to get out a little bit more to see fellow breeders and producers this year. I would personally like to congratulate the juniors that participated in Bonanza 2021 and those who attended the MHA Field Day.
The summer has flown by! The pastures are getting slim and it’s almost time to bring the herd home for the winter. I wish everyone a safe harvest, happy weaning and the best of luck this sale season!
Thanks, Sam

MHA Report - Jay Rimke
As I write this, I hope everyone is healthy and in good spirits after this dry summer. I hope everyone has found enough pasture to get through the summer and rounded up enough feed for the winter.
Congratulations to all the MJHA juniors who went out to Bonanza this summer in Camrose, Alberta. I’m sure the kids had a great time after a really quiet summer with no shows to go to.
Thank you to Keith & Cheryl Troop & family for hosting a great MHA Field Day. There was a total of 85 head of Hereford cattle on display that day. Congratulations to KTCT Polled Herefords on having Champion Female and to RSK Farms on having Champion Bull.
Hope to see everyone down the road at the fall sales and shows. Please join us on December 12, 2021 at the Victoria Inn, Brandon, MB for the MHA Annual Meeting. Good luck to everyone with their sales as well.
MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns
A lot of juniors have started back at school and university this fall after a re-introduction of some shows back into everyone’s summer routines.
After a stressful decision making process, Bonanza was moved to Camrose, Alberta and the MJHA is very thankful that the AJHA was able to host on such short notice. Despite the challenges of the pandemic, Bonanza 2021 had a really good turn out with some amazing cattle and super friendly people. Bonanza was super organized and we would like to thank all the sponsors and volunteers for being able to make it happen. Manitoba came back with Reserve Champion Bred and Owned Senior and Yearling Bulls exhibited by Teegan and Orianna Hyndman and Reserve Champion Commercial Heifer and Female exhibited by Levi Rimke. Bonanza once again ended with a delicious meal and celebration of many memories made.
Looking forward, I hope that you’ve looked into entering some animals into the Brandon Ag Ex that is running this year. You can find more information on the provincial exhibition website.
CHA Report - Albert Rimke
Hi everyone, another amazing few months it has been. It has been both very rewarding and frustration all in one. It was very disappointing when we had to cancel Bonanza in Manitoba. Thankfully restrictions eased in Alberta and it was very rewarding to be a part of it. I would like to thank all the Manitoba volunteers that were ready to put it on in Manitoba.
The CHA board has been very engaged in the strategic marketing plan having 2-3 meetings monthly. Watch for exciting details coming out soon. Thank you to everyone that participated in the CHA AGM. If you were unable to take part a recording is available for your viewing. If you have any questions give myself or the office a call. Watch for the MB AGM coming in December. Hope to see many of you there!
Hopefully we’ll see many of you in person at the fall shows and sales, as it’s been a long time in the waiting. Good luck to everyone at the shows and with your sales and/or purchases. Bye for now. See you soon!
Calendar of Events

Weaning Weights
It’s soon time to submit “weaning weights” for spring-born calves. “Weaning” weights do not have to be taken “the day they’re weaned”. They can be weighed earlier and turned back out with their dams.
The weaning weight is also often referred to as the 205-day weight. The age range for taking these weaning or 205-day weights are between 110-300 days of age. Therefore, when choosing the date to take weights, consider the birthdate of the first and last calves. There is a weaning & yearling date calculator available on the CHA website under the Performance tab!
Management Groups are used to ensure animals managed the same are grouped and calculated together, and animals which have not had the same opportunity to perform are grouped separately. Remember, if a calf has been sick, fed differently, orphaned, or grafted, etc, it shouldn’t be compared to the main group of calves and should be given a different management group number.
Spot Test
Spot tests are random DNA/SNP tests done simply to maintain the purity of the Hereford herd book. The Canadian Hereford Association registry system is programed to pick every 1000th female and every 500th bull registered. This is a process done by the computer, not the staff at the Canadian Hereford Association office.
If one of your animals is picked for a spot test, don’t panic. It is not a reflection of you or your breeding program, it’s simply a random selection. The CHA pays the testing fees.
You will receive a letter from the Canadian Hereford Association with explanation of how to proceed, and a DNA application for the selected animal will be included, as well as a DNA application for the dam if she does not have a DNA profile with us already.
A hair sample for the selected animal must be sent to the lab with the DNA application (if you receive a DNA application for the dam, a sample must be sent for her as well). The CHA requires a copy of your breeding records and calving records for the years the spot test animal was conceived and born. Copies of your original records are preferred, but if you only keep electronic records, the full electronic file must be sent, with headers and dates included, and not just the screenshots pertaining to those animals.
It is extremely important to remember that all breeding and calving records must be kept indefinitely, and that the CHA has the authority to request these records at any time.
October calves are turning 1 year - register them now for $35 April born calves are turning 6 months in October - register soon for $25
2021 CHA Honour Roll Recipient - Doug Troop
The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Doug Troop on his induction into the Canadian Hereford Association’s Honour Roll.
Born on January 1, 1955 in Portage La Prairie, MB, Doug Troop was raised and worked on the family farm with his father Orval until 1984 when he established his own operation in Brandon.
He bought his first purebred Hereford when he was just 14 years old from Robert Kerr in Portage and has built his numbers up since then, calving out 180 cows in 2021.
His education began in a one room country school, Burnside Elementary School, through Grade 5. He attended high school at Portage Collegiate. He married Jayne in 1981 and the couple raised two children, Kaitlin and Adam. They are expecting their first grandchild in July 2021. Kaitlin and Adam were both involved in the local 4-H beef club and Kaitlin participated in Bonanza at Virden.
In the early years working with Orval, he showed a bull at the Denver Stock Show. Since then, Doug has shown cattle at Brandon AgEx and Agribition as well as at summer fairs, field days, the Lundar Bull Sale, Brandon bull sale and the Cream of the Crop Bull Sale. He started, and now co-hosts, a bull sale in Neepawa specializing in Hereford bulls and replacement Hereford and Black Baldie females. He has also hosted an annual production sale selling bred heifers off the farm the past three years. Doug has sold cattle to Quebec, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Russia, Kazakhstan, New Mexico and North Dakota.
A life member of the Canadian Hereford Association, Doug has had Reserve Senior Champion Bull and Reserve Junior Champion Bull at Agribition. He also raised the sire of a two-time Agribition Champion Bull, DTHF TANK 64T. He was named Premier Breeder at the Manitoba Livestock Expo in 2011 and has raised the Champion Bred Heifer, Champion Heifer Calf and Champion Bull Calf at Manitoba Field Days.
Doug holds the record for the high selling bull calf at the Good as Gold Sale. He has also been called on to judge the Southeast Saskatchewan Field Day, summer fairs and Brandon’s Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Steer Show and he has put on clinics for judging and showmanship for a variety of 4-H clubs.
Elected to the Manitoba Hereford Association Board of Directors in 1984, he has spent 25 years on the board including a three year stint as president. He initiated the first President’s Cup (Manitoba Hereford Association’s golf tournament). Doug has served on three Bonanza planning committees and hosted MHA Field Days and tours. He was the breed rep and barn boss for AgEx and was also a Hereford breed rep for the Douglas Test Station. Doug was also a founding member of the Good as Gold Sale which is now one of Canada’s longest running consignment sales, having just hosted its 27th sale in 2020. He spent four years selecting cattle for the Good as Gold Sale and managed the sale for two years.
Many international guests have toured the farm including breeders from Australia, North Dakota, Kansas, England, Germany and most Canadian provinces. Congratulations Doug!

Bonanza 2021
Camrose, AB - July 28 - 31, 2021
Originally the Manitoba Junior Hereford Association had planned to host Bonanza in Brandon, MB. Unfortunately, due to provincial health regulations, the CJHA and Bonanza Committee had to make the tough decision move the location of Bonanza 2021. The AJHA took on the role of hosting Bonanza 2021 with just 6 weeks to plan! Congratulations to the AJHA for hosting such an amazing event in Camrose, AB.
There were approximately 90 juniors with 140 head of cattle in Camrose for Hereford Week in Canada. Levi Rimke, Orianna Hyndman, Teegan Hyndman and Kennedy Manns represented Manitoba with 11 head of cattle. Although Alayna and Lucas Bieganski were unable to be at Bonanza in person, they were still able to submit some art and literature and came out with many top placings! Team Manitoba came home with many wins while in Camrose as well! Congratulations to Orianna Hyndman with the Overall Bob Gordon Aggregate Award, Champion Senior Aggregate, Reserve Champion Yearling Bred & Owned Bull and multiple top placings in the art and literature divisions. Congratulations to Levi
Rimke with Champion Senior Showman, Reserve Champion Senior Grooming, Reserve Champion Commercial Yearling Heifer and Reserve Champion Commercial Female. And last, but not least, congratulations to Teegan Hyndman with Champion Intermediate Aggregate, Reserve Champion Senior Bred and Owned Bull and multiple top placings in the art and literature divisions. Congratulations to Levi & Orianna on such a successful last year as juniors. We thank you for your dedication to the junior program.
For those who were unable to attend Bonanza in Camrose, the CJHA also hosted a virtual show! The virtual show took place on DLMS online and juniors were able to submit entries of cattle that were not at the show in Camrose. Lucas Bieganski, Emma Falconor and Levi Rimke were all Virtual Bonanza participants. Congrats to Emma with Grand Champion Female, Lucas with Grand Champion Steer, Lucas with Champion Heifer Lottery Female and Levi with Reserve Champion Heifer Lottery Female.
Bonanza 2021 was a huge success! Congratulations to all junior participants!

It is with heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of Brynlee, peacefully in her sleep on September 2, 2021. She is survived by her parents, Myles and Stephanie, and little sister Taryn. Grandparents, Grant and Shelley Cheadle, and Donna Jones Turner. Great grandparents, Keith and Barb Olson, Ron and Pat Roche, and Beulah Jones (Clayton). As well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She was predeceased by her grandfather, Bryan Jones.
Brynlee was born in Winnipeg on September 13, 2021, and was later blessed with little sister Taryn, who was so eager to be a big helper. Brynlee’s zest for life was endless. She loved days on the farm, which included days spent in the tractor, feeding the cows, ranger rides, jumping on the trampoline, and the wind blowing in her hair. Aside from the farm, Brynlee enjoyed camping and fishing at various locations around the province, and trips to McDonalds for french fries. Brynlee will be deeply missed, along with her beautiful smile.
