MHA Report - Steven Manns

Hello everyone,

Hopefully summer has treated you all reasonably well, it would be nice if the rain started falling in the dry areas. It’s been a fairly busy summer for the MHA. Starting off with the AGM that occurred in June, a big thank you to Sadie McCauley and family for hosting the annual meeting and preparing a delicious meal. The meeting was well attended, it was a busy time of year, however it would be nice to see more member representation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Kenny Gulka for his years of service on the board and welcome Philip Allen to the board.

Bonanza this year was held in Olds, Alberta. Nine juniors represented Manitoba well. Fun was had by all, thank you to the Alberta Junior Association and the Bonanza planning committee for hosting a great

event. Thank you Travis McCauley for transporting the kids cattle and tack safely to Alberta and back home.

This years field day was held at Roselawn Polled Hereford’s, in Killarney. Just under 100 of Manitoba’s finest Hereford cattle were on display. It was a great day, the rain delay’s were perfect for visiting between all the producers, and a few stories were told. We would like to congratulate Lakeside Hereford’s again, for being awarded Commercial Breeder of the year. Thank you to the Mitchell Family for hosting a great event.

Now as we move into the fall season, we look forward to the fall sale run, and show season. Hopefully we will see you down the road at one of the events.

Till next time,

MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns

Greetings from Manitoba! It has been quite a busy year for the MJHA, in the beginning of January, our adult Advisor, Steven Manns, and one of our Manitoba delegates, Kennedy Manns, attended the CJHA meetings held in Calgary. Then in July we had some really good representation in Olds, Alberta for Bonanza 2025 with 9 juniors attending and all of them doing well with their cattle! We are looking forward to seeing everyone who attends the Brandon Ag Ex in October this year! Wishing everyone good luck with their upcoming female sales!

Snapshots from Bonanza 2025 in Olds, AB...

CHA Report - Janelle Gulka

It’s been a tough fall for many of us. The dry summer followed by too much rain has made harvest a real challenge. It hasn’t been the ideal year, but as everyone in agriculture knows, we deal with the cards we’re given and keep moving forward.

This past July, Bonanza was held in Olds, AB, and it was a week to remember. Manitoba Juniors once again showed their talent, enthusiasm, and commitment to the breed, proudly representing our province with class, determination, and pride. Their efforts, both in and out of the ring, highlight the strength of our junior program and the bright future of Herefords in Manitoba.

Alongside Bonanza, the Canadian Hereford Association (CHA) hosted its Annual General Meeting. It was well attended and gave members a chance to connect directly with the CHA Executive Director and board of directors. Several key initiatives were discussed, all aimed at strengthening the future of Herefords across the country.

A major highlight was the Heifer Select Program — a joint effort with the Canadian Angus and Canadian Charolais Associations. The program gives commercial producers access to more genetic services and data analytics, helping them use genomic testing to make smarter breeding and management decisions. For Hereford breeders, the goal is clear: to ensure the commercial sector continues to see the value of Hereford genetics. Early feedback has been very positive, and momentum is building.

Genetics were also in focus with news of a new partnership between the CHA and Neogen. Since August, the 100K genomic test now includes delayed blindness and horned/polled status at a reduced cost. The Mandibulofacial Dysostosis (MD) test remains a separate option. Members can contact the CHA office for more details.

Another exciting announcement was the launch of the Canadian Hereford Foundation. At Agribition’s Red Coat Reception, a National Select Sale will take place featuring something for everyone — from sporting events and travel packages to Hereford genetics. Proceeds will support youth development and education programs, with an online catalogue available closer to the date.

Looking ahead, all eyes are on the World Hereford Conference in October in Kansas City, Missouri. Manitoba is proud to have Levi Rimke representing our province in the youth competition. Levi, along with his Canadian teammates, has been preparing tirelessly, and we know they’ll make us proud on the international stage.

Here at home, Manitoba breeders are gearing up for a busy fall sale season. Whether through managed sales or private treaty offerings, there will be plenty of high-quality cattle on offer. It’s a great time to be involved in Herefords — whether you’re looking to add to your herd or showcase your own genetics.

And don’t forget to circle December on your calendar for the MHA’s Good As Gold Sale in Brandon. Always a highlight of the season, it’s a great chance to connect with breeders, buyers, and Hereford supporters.

I look forward to seeing many of you this fall — at sales, events, and out in the pasture.

CHA Honour Roll - Blair & Bobbi Rankin

The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Blair and Bobbi Rankin on their induction into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll.

Blair Rankin’s connection to Hereford cattle began at birth. As a third-generation breeder, he registered his first animal in 1973 under the UCR tattoo letters, launching what became known as Chokecherry Lane Herefords. Since the beginning of the Total Herd Enrollment (THE) program, Blair has remained an active participant, reflecting his long-term commitment to performance-based herd management.

Bobbi joined the Hereford community with just as much passion. In 1980—the year she was named Manitoba Hereford Queen—she purchased her first Hereford animal, setting the tone for a lifelong devotion to breed promotion and youth engagement. Together, Blair and Bobbi married in 1981 and built a program rooted in performance, sound structure, and honesty.

The Rankins have shown cattle at nearly every major event in Canada, from the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair and Canadian Western Agribition to Yorkton Harvest Showdown and numerous M.O.E. shows. Blair was among the last to ride the livestock train east to Toronto in the 1970s, a testament to his longstanding dedication to national level showing.

Their cattle have been marketed throughout Canada and internationally, with animals exported to Russia and Kazakhstan. Sales such as the Manitoba Good as Gold, Lundar Bull Sale, and the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair Bull Sale reflect the consistent quality of their genetics. Their Verified Beef Plus certification speaks to their values in food safety, sustainability, and accountability.

In 2021, the Rankin family received the Canadian Hereford Association’s 100-Year Pin. In 2023, Blair was awarded his 50-Year CHA Membership Pin—clear markers of their remarkable legacy.

Blair and Bobbi are the kind of people who never hesitate to help—whether they’re asked or not. Blair served on the Manitoba Hereford Association (MHA) board, while Bobbi served several terms and contributed as secretary. They have volunteered at every Bonanza hosted in Manitoba, supported Manitoba Ag-Ex, and opened their farm for Hereford Field Days, offering hospitality, education, and encouragement to all who attended. They also generously donated a heifer to support MHA fundraising efforts.

Bobbi’s commitment to the junior program goes back to its earliest days. She attended the first junior field day at the Gordon farm in Souris, Manitoba, participating in the first Bonanza in Red Deer, and served on the organizing committee for the inaugural Bonanza in Brandon, Manitoba. Her behind-the-scenes efforts helped lay the groundwork for the strong junior programming we have today.

As longtime leaders of the Belmont-Hilton Combined 4-H Club, Blair and Bobbi were involved in far more than beef projects. Bobbi contributed to home economics, while both helped with woodworking. They opened their farm for multi-year district 4-H field days that offered hands-on learning in showmanship, grooming, and livestock judging. These events didn’t just teach skills – they inspired confidence, curiosity, and connection to agriculture. Their continued support for youth programs, even as their own involvement had changed, shows how deeply they cared about the next generation. Their mentorship has quietly shaped many young leaders in agriculture today.

Blair and Bobbi’s impact extends well beyond the cattle word. Blair has served on the Pelican Lake Agriculture Society for over 40 years, including many years as president and director of the cattle show. Bobbi has also been a strong supporter of the Society since 1980, helping with organization, promotion, and fundraising. Blair also serves on the Hilton Cemetery board, while Bobbi has been involved with St. Paul’s Anglican Church, helped found the Kris Kringle Christmas Market in Wawanesa, and volunteered as a Brownies leader and at the Glenboro Fair horse show. She ran her own hair salon in Wawanesa for many years and was recognized in 2019 with the Best Farm Home Grounds award from the Manitoba Good Roads Association.

Together, they are known throughout the area for their incredible hospitality – often preparing roast beef for local weddings, reunions, and charity events. Their kindness, dependability, and willingness to help out have made them beloved members of their community.

Blair and Bobbi’s true impact lies in their selfless contributions to the lives of others. They have made countless sacrifices, often putting others before themselves, whether it’s in their roles as mentors, event volunteers, or community organizers. The Rankins’ unwavering dedication is grounded in a humble and genuine desire to support the success and wellbeing of others – whether they’re fellow farmers, youth in agriculture, or neighbors in need. They have a unique ability to make people feel seen and valued, always offering a helping hand without expecting anything in return. Their quiet leadership and willingness to give their time, energy, and resources have created ripples of positivity that extend well beyond the Hereford community, leaving a lasting and meaningful legacy in every aspect of their lives.

Next Gen Breeder Award - Jay Rimke

The Canadian Hereford Association developed the Next Gen Breeder Award to recognize young producers excelling in the beef industry and demonstrating a passion for the Hereford breed. When Jay Rimke’s fellow breeders think of him, these are the qualities that come to mind.

Growing up near Oak Lake, Manitoba, Jay has been a member of the Canadian Hereford Association for much longer than most breeders his age – that’s because his parents purchased him a membership when he was just one year old. It’s not often that a 26-year-old breeder receives their 25 Year Membership Service Pin, but Jay can claim that achievement.

When Jay was just two years old, the first Hereford female was registered in his name. With that cow still back in Jay’s pedigrees, it’s safe to say he never looked back after getting into the Hereford breed.

Jay joined 4-H as a Pee Wee member. He was involved in the 4-H program for 18 years, and credits it for much of his personal development. “4-H helped me grow into the young man I am today,” says Jay. “It taught me to be a leader, be involved in my community, and always be willing to lend a helping hand when I can.”

The generosity that Jay developed as a 4-H member was evident when he donated the entire proceeds from one of his 4-H steers to STARS Air Ambulance as thanks for the life-saving care they provided to him after a medical emergency in 2012. To this day, Jay can be found giving back to the 4-H program as an Assistant Leader of the Oak Lake 4-H Beef Club, regularly volunteering at local events and acting as a judge. At Hereford events in Manitoba, Jay can be found helping out behind the scenes, always demonstrating quiet leadership and kindness without expecting anything in return.

In his years as a junior member, Jay was also very active in the Canadian Junior Hereford Association. He served as a Manitoba Delegate on the National Council for three years and attended 13 Bonanzas. Jay exhibited many cattle in the Bred & Owned and Semen Donation classes, taking home several champions in these classes over the years.

Of all the CJHA programs he took part in, Jay remembers the Semen Donation project the most. “The Semen Donation project had a big impact,” he says. “It got me some new genetics into my herd from the get-go that I probably never would have had the chance to use from the start.”

Though you’d never hear Jay brag about his achievements, he received many accolades over his junior career. For his early commitment to the breed, Jay was awarded the CJHA Future of the Breed Scholarship in 2011 and was inducted into the CJHA Honour Roll in 2014. In 2013, he balanced being a Co-Chair of Bonanza in Brandon with participating in the event, earning himself the Major Jay Fox Ambassador Award and Senior Grand Aggregate. Jay is also a twotime recipient of the Triara Ambassador Award.

In 2015, Jay completed his Diploma in Agricultural Management at Olds College. Since graduating, he has returned home to the farm where he now runs the operation with his grandfather, father, and brother. Together, as AM Ranching, they run about 400 Hereford, Angus, and commercial cows, including around 25 of Jay’s own.

Jay is a practical cattleman, striving to develop functional cattle for commercial customers. “We try and develop long-lasting, good-footed bulls and females,” he says. “We want ones that are functional but powerful as well.” The quality of Jay’s cattle has been recognized internationally, with sales in Kazakhstan and Russia.

Each year, the Rimkes consign to the Prime Plus Bull Sale and Good as Gold sale. They sell their commercial females off the farm, seeing strong demand for the baldy cross. While Jay grew up in the Hereford breed, it’s no coincidence that he uses Hereford genetics. “We use Herefords because they’re good quality females,” says Jay. “They’re functional, docile, easy-doing cattle.”

With Jay’s clear passion for the Hereford breed, it’s no surprise that he plans to take over the farm with his brother Levi. “There will always be Hereford involvement in it,” says Jay. In the future, he hopes that the Hereford breed will continue to push for improvement in carcass traits to maintain the strong demand for Hereford influence in commercial cow herds.

Off the farm, Jay enjoys curling. He competed on the Olds College team and received the Honourable Team Member award in 2012 and OCRB Bronco Achievement Award in 2014. He now curls in the Virden Men’s League.

While Jay says he was surprised to receive the call that he had received the Next Gen Breeder Award, his fellow breeders deeply appreciate how deserving of a recipient he is. “What sets Jay apart is not just his impressive list of achievements but his exemplary character,” says CHA Director Janelle Gulka. “He is a humble, dependable individual who is always ready to lend a hand – whether mentoring younger cattlemen, organizing community events, or assisting his peers. Jay’s integrity, perseverance, and work ethic have earned him the respect of his colleagues and the admiration of his community.”

MHA 2025 Stewardship Award - Ron Batho

The MHA is pleased to award the 2025 Stewardship award to Ron Batho. Ron in his younger days did a lot of showing, always exhibiting Herefords. Some of his proud moments include: Ron exhibited the Reserve Supreme Champion Bull of All Breeds (1955) and the Champion Pen of Five Steers (1956) at Manitoba Winter Fair and the Junior Champion and Grand Champion female at the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba (1955). He also exhibited at the Toronto Royal in the early 50s.

Ron was very involved with Douglas Bull Test Stations in the 1960’s. When Douglas Bull Test Station opened its doors in 1964, Ron had bulls entered. He has been the only breeder to have bulls enrolled each year for 50 consecutive years.

In addition to excelling close to home, Ron has been recognized provincially, nationally and internationally as a premier cattleman. His cattle have sold across Canada, the US, Japan and Czechoslovakia. Collectively, Batho Farms was awarded the Premiere Purebred Beef Producer honour in 1984 by the Manitoba Minister of Agriculture, named to the Seed stock Producer Honor Roll of Excellence by the Beef Improvement Federation in 1985 and won a Manitoba Conservation Farm Family award in 1996. Individually, Ron was awarded a Certificate of Merit from the Manitoba Ag Grads Association for achieving outstanding accomplishments in the Manitoba agriculture industry. As well in 2019 Ron and Kathy and Families were present the BMO Farm Family award at the Manitoba Winter Fair.

Ron has also passed on his love of Agriculture, Herefords and cattle in general to his grandchildren; all of them are involved in Agriculture either on mixed, grain or cattle farms at Oak Lake, Birtle and Dauphin. In addition to farming, all members of the Batho, Rimke, and Stykalo families have a deep-rooted sense of community. They have been involved with various organizations including several 4-H clubs, Manitoba and Canadian Hereford Associations, Manitoba Sheep Association, the Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba, Manitoba Youth Beef Roundup, Dauphin Ag Society,Dau phin Curling Club, Oak Lake Agricultural Society, Oak Lake Curling Club, Oak Lake Rodeo Association, Oak Lake United Church, student associations at University of Manitoba, Assiniboine Community College, Univer-

sity of Saskatchewan, and Olds College, and many other organizations.

Ron has for many years been the voice/MC at the Royal Winter Fair cattle shows, Hereford show and junior shows at Ag Ex, along with the Oak Lake 4-H Beef Club shows and Oak Lake fair. This is something Ron enjoyed for many years to be part of these shows and to volunteer his time.

Besides the farm, the test station and the grandchildren, Ron’s volunteer work, both in the agriculture field and out, is extensive. Ron has served on the Manitoba Hereford Association as secretary for many years, and Oak Lake Ag Society boards. He is a member of the Oak Lake United Church, and has participated in the Oak Lake Curling Club, Oak Lake Rodeo Association and was Chairperson for the Oak Lake Homecoming in 2000. Ron and Kathy have hosted tours on the farm for the University of Manitoba Aggies, the CHA Annual Meeting attendees, a Grasslands Grazing Tour, and local elementary school classes. Their commitment to both children & agriculture was evident during the BSE crisis in 2003-2004 when Batho Farms donated a free lunch of a cheeseburger and milk to all students and staff at Oak Lake Community School to promote both Canadian beef and the importance of nutritious eating. Ron and Kathy also donated a heifer to the MHA GAGS for their annual fundraiser, plus one year won the donation heifer and donated her back with the funds going to the Manitoba Junior Hereford Association.

It is with great pleasure that the Manitoba Hereford Association presents the Stewardship Award for 2025 to Ron Batho.

World Hereford Conference Young Breeders Competition

Each country at the World Hereford Conference can have a team of four young breeders to take part in the Young Breeder’s Competition hosted at Kansas State University, Manhattan, Kan. Contestants will take part in a variety of skillbased events centered around the United States agriculture industry. To conclude the competition, youth will participate in a fitting and showmanship competition at the American Royal on Oct. 25, 2025. The winners will be crowned at the closing reception. Contestants must be between 18 to 26 years of age as of October 19, 2025. All teams must have 4 competitors.

Congratulations to Levi Rimke on being selected to Represent Team Canada at the World Hereford Conference in Kansas in the Young Breeders Competition.

Levi Rimke, Oak Lake, Manitoba, was raised on a purebred Hereford operation, where he remains actively involved in the growth of the herd’s AI and ET programs. Growing up, he was an active 4-H member and held leadership roles with both the Manitoba Junior Hereford Association and the CJHA, serving as a past president. Levi graduated from Olds College with a diploma in agricultural management and later from the World Wide College of Auctioneering in Des Moines, Iowa. Levi is excited to represent Team Canada at the World Hereford Conference Young Breeders Competition and looks forward to connecting with fellow cattle enthusiasts from around the world.

2025 Commercial Breeder - Lakeside Herefords

Lakeside Herefords got its beginning in 1971 with a purebred horned female from Dwight Cook at Steep Rock and later on from Oli Olson Peonan Ranch. Along with the help of my parents the herd slowly developed. In 1981 Sherry and I were married and continued on and used polled bulls on our horned cows. During the years we consigned bulls to Lundar Bull Sale and also Ashern Bull Sale. In 1991 I took an off farm job at Graymont Western where I worked for the next 30 years. At that time we had to step away from the cattle for a number of years. In 2014 we decided to get back into the Herefords and females were sourced from Crawford Brothers of Ar-

gyle, Stoneham Farms of Ashern and the odd one here and there. In 2019 I retired from Graymont and have more time to spend with our Herefords. Our children Dustin and Amy Lee are both married and live in Edmonton and Kamloops. Bulls were purchased from Bob Truthwaite of Hodson , Crawford Brothers Argyle, Ayrey Herefords of Evesham and most recently Little Poplar Grove Herefords of Forestburg Alberta. Cowherd is predominantly commercial. Steer calves are sold in the fall at Ashern Auction Mart and heifer calves are sold privately for breeding. We’re not sure how long we will continue in the business but Herefords will definitely remain at Lakeside Herefords till such time that we decide to move on.

Congratulations to Lakeside Herefords on the 2025 MHA Commercial Breeder of the Year Award!

Hereford Farewell

Mary (Dyke) Mitchell VanDaele

It is with much sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Dyck Mitchell VanDaele on Monday, April 14, 2025 at the age of 94 years. Mary was born two miles south of Lowe Farm, Manitoba on September 18, 1930 to John Neufeld Dyck and Helena Blatz. Mary was the sixth child born after five brothers, followed by one more sibling, Helen.

Mom grew up on the farm doing whatever needed to be done. She frequently reminded us that she had been driving and hauling grain since she was eleven years old! Mom went to school in Lowe Farm and after completing grade 11 in 1948, left school and was hired at the Co-op storeHer parents had made the move to Rivers, selling the land at Lowe Farm and purchasing a house and eleven quarters near Rivers. After two long surgeries to remove a non-functioning kidney, and eleven weeks in Brandon hospital recovering, Mom returned to her parents’ home and began work at Gilchrist Drug Store in Rivers.

In 1954, Mom met our Dad, Morley Mitchell at the Ag School in Brandon. After a short courtship, they fell in love and were married October 27, 1954. For Mary, life began on the Mitchell home farm with her social life forever intertwined in the cattle business. Mom was kept very busy in those early years when the Mitchells all farmed together, feeding the Mitchell men all summer, milking cows, gathering eggs, raising chickens and having children. Wally was born in 1955, Barb in 1958, Don in 1961 and David in 1971.

Sadly, our Dad passed away in January 1978 at the age of 47. Mom remained on the farm and life stayed very busy as she and the boys continued on with the grain and Hereford cattle farm. Two years later, Mom met and married Dusty VanDaele and moved to Medora to continue her life in the cattle and farming business. Dusty passed away in 2008. When her memory began to fail, Mom moved to Victoria Landing in Brandon, and eventually returned to reside in personal care in Killarney. Mom’s pride and joy were her children and her grandchildren. She was so proud of us all and loved to tell people! Even though her memory failed, her face always lit up with a smile when one of her children came to visit.

Mom is survived by her 4 children, Wally (Jackie), Barb, Don (Penny) and David, her grandchildren Michelle, Kailey, Brady, Lindsay and Ryan, and their families, her sister Helen, sister-in-law Lena and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husbands Morley and Maurice (Dusty), her son-in-law Marlin, step children Ilene and Floyd, step granddaughter Jackie, parents John and Helen, and her brothers Andy, Jake, John and Elmer. Rest in peace, Mom. You will be missed.

Ingredients:

Smoked Sirloin Roast

• 1 3-4 lb whole sirloin roast

• 2 tbsp olive oil

• 1 tbsp kosher salt

• 1 tbsp freshly ground black pepper

Directions:

• 1 tbsp smoked paprika

• 1 tsp garlic powder

• 1 tsp onion powder

• ½ tsp dried thyme

• ½ tsp cayenne pepper (optional for heat)

1. Pat roast dry with paper towels. Rub olive oil evenly over the entire surface. Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl; then coat the roast evenly. Let the roast sit at room temperature for 30-45 minutes to absorb flavors.

2. Preheat smoker to a steady 225°F. Add wood chips to the smoker box or charcoal for steady smoke. Place the roast directly on the smoker grate. Insert a meat thermometer into the thickest part of the roast.

3. Smoke until the internal temperature reaches 130-135°F (54-57°C) for medium-rare, about 2.5 to 3 hours. Remove the roast from the smoker and tent loosely with aluminum foil. Let it rest for 15-20 minutes; temperature will rise slightly during this time.

Ground Beef Gnocchi

Ingredients:

• 1 pound lean ground beef

• 1/2 medium onion chopped

• 3 cloves garlic minced

• 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning

• 1 14 oz can diced tomatoes with juices

Directions:

• 1/3 cup chicken or beef broth

• 3/4 cup heavy/whipping cream

• 1 pound uncooked potato gnocchi

• 1/2 cup freshly grated parmesan cheese

• Salt & pepper to taste

1. Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet over medium-high heat for 7-10 minutes. If there’s lots of excess fat, spoon most of it out. Stir in the garlic and Italian seasoning.

2. Add the diced tomatoes, chicken broth, cream, and gnocchi to the pan, and give it a good stir. Once the sauce starts to bubble again, cover the pan and reduce the heat to medium. Cook for 5 minutes.

3. Uncover the pan, stir it, and let it cook for another few minutes, or until the gnocchi has cooked through and is nice and soft and the sauce has thickened to your liking.

4. Stir in parmesan cheese and salt & pepper as needed. Serve immediately.
