Wow, was I glad to see an end to 2021 and to welcome in a new year.
I would like to take the time to congratulate everyone on all their accomplishments in 2021. It was another one for the record books and all breeders should be proud of their success!
Calving season is well underway for some or just getting started for others. This is my favourite time of the year!
I would like to thank everyone that contributes to the MHA Hereford Connection Newsletter. Your feedback and advertisements are greatly appreciated. I enjoy working on the newsletter and it is a privilege to have so many supporting me!
I would like to wish everyone all the best in 2022 and here’s to hoping that it is better than the last!
Thanks, Sam 204-851-3189 -- samantha.rimke@gmail.com

It has been a fantastic start to the year of 2022 seeing all this snow. It’s nice knowing we are going to have some moisture to start spring off with. It will help get water sources replenished and get some grass growing in pastures.
I hope this write up finds everyone having a successful calving season so far that have started. And you were able to get calves into a warm place through those extremely cold days in January. Good luck to those that plan to start later when it is hopefully warmer out. The cattle market is getting stronger again which is great to see. It looks like Covid restrictions are starting to let up just in time for bull sale season which will be a nice change. Surely things are looking up for summer shows and fall shows for this coming year.
I would like to thank Kaitlyn Richaud for her many years on the MHA board of directors.
Good luck to everyone with the rest of their calving and have a great start to your spring with greener pastures.
It’s been a cold couple of months and I hope everyone is staying warm. In October we had the Brandon Ag Ex and we had a pretty good turn out with lots of good cattle. We had a great turn out of Junior Hereford members, with many first time junior exhibitors. Everyone did well and Khloe Stocki won Champion Hereford Heifer at the junior show, with Rory Manns winning Reserve Hereford Heifer. Watch for more information about the upcoming Bonanza in Lindsey, Ontario this year which will take place July 26th - 30th, 2022. I wish everyone the best of luck with their calving seasons and upcoming bull sales this spring.
40 km winds, -40C starting to calve, seems normal for this year, but what is normal? Sure nice to have the moisture regardless if we have to move the same snow almost daily.
The show season this past year was better than expected. Bonanza was unbelievable, the MHA field day was very well attended, Ag Ex had more people watching than the past several years. Agribition showcased many outstanding cattle. Although cattle numbers were down, at many events the enthusiasm of the Hereford breed was overwhelming.
The CHA board of directors have been working for what seems years on the new strategic marketing plan. Thanks to a lot of breeders, purebred and commercial, we hopefully have developed a plan that we feel will bring the breed forward. Hopefully everyone has seen the new brand – Better your Beef. The plan has several parts to it that include, the youth, maternal traits, carcass data collection, to name a few. The website is also new. It is designed to be more user friendly, with several more features. The association has also developed several new ads that members can use along with logos and the new brand.
Many breeders will receive a Breed Strategy Summary Report that can be used to help with your breeding decisions. If anyone has a question once receiving their report give any director a call.
Good luck to everyone involved in bull sales this spring. Hopefully demand will be great. Many of you will have started or finished calving by the time this report gets to you, so good luck calving and congratulations on your new calf crop. Bye for now. Albert
Alex Rankin bought his first Hereford bull in 1917 according to the Turtle Mountain Municipality History Book 1882 -1982.
In Volume 12 of the Canadian Hereford Herd Book it shows that A&J Rankin (Alex & Jack) of Killarney registered a 1919 calf, bred by James I. Moffatt Sr. of Carroll, but calved the property of A. & J. Rankin (-39880- Perfect Gomez A.J.R. 1, Right Ear Born May 28,1919, bred by James I. Moffatt, Carroll, Man; calved the property of A. & J. Rankin, Killarney, Man.; sire Excel Gomez -23770-, dam, Erma -21433-, by Perfect Fairfax -12737).
The first registered calf of Rankin breeding was Blanche Fairfax -41200-, calved August 22nd, 1920. She was by Beau Major 2nd -26341-, bred by J.A. Chapman of Hayfield, Man. And out of Erma -21433-, bred by James I. Moffatt Sr. of Carroll.
A.& J. carried on a partnership until 1947 when three herds came into being, namely, A.J Rankin & Sons, J.C. Rankin & Sons, and D.M. Rankin. All were at Killarney. These herds continued into the 1960s and all had been successful at the Provincial Shows and Sales, and also made creditable showing at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. In 1966 D.M. Rankin had a complete dispersal, the following year saw the dispersal of A.J Rankin & Sons. In 1978 Alex was named to the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll. Alex and his brothers Jack and Dave were honoured in June 1980 at the Rankin Brothers Mark of Excellence Show at the Provincial Exhibition in Brandon for their contributions to the Hereford Breed.
George Rankin son of Alex Rankin started his herd in 1967, purchasing cattle from his father’s Dispersal. This herd became Cal Lea Herefords, the prefix was RGN. In 1970 George, Norma and family returned from Kansas having worked for Alfalfa Lawn Farms. They purchased property in the Hilton district and raised and showed Hereford cattle. George and Norma were named to the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll in 1995. George
and Norma were strong supporters of many young people and the Hereford cattle, George served on the Manitoba Hereford Association Board and was the president for a time. George and Norma’s children Blair, and Shelly (Nichol) also continued the family tradition of raising and showing registered Herefords, Shelly no longer is registering cattle. Blair registered his first animal in 1973. He has continued on and his cattle are under the UCR Prefix. In the 70’s he purchased his maternal Grandfather’s land as well as some of the land own by a Great Uncle on his Mother’s side, this was the beginning of Chokecherry Lane Herefords. Blair’s herd is both Polled and Horned, and can be traced through one of his foundation dams to his Grandfather Alex’s herd. AJR Miss Domino 13V COO941976. Cattle under the UCR Prefix have been on the THE program since its conception, as were George and Norma’s. He has also served on the Board of the Manitoba Hereford Association. Blair raises cattle that will work for the commercial breeders believing that every herd of cattle needs Herefords in their genetics.
Each generation of the Rankins have used herd sires natural and later A.I. from foundation herds across North America to enhance their breeding programs.
Through the generations Rankin cattle have been shown and sold throughout North America. Cattle from both Cal Lea and Chokecherry Lane were exported to Russia and Kazakhstan first through a company from Quebec and later through Xports International.
George and Norma’s 4 granddaughters, Michele, Angie, Abby, and Dana were very active in the MJHA and the CJHA taking part in many Junior shows and Bonanzas, during this time Grandpa and Grandma encouraged and shared their knowledge with the girls. You only had to look around the ring and Grandpa and Grandma could be found watching the girls. Through their involvement in the CJHA, the girls were able to make use of the Semen Donation Program to expand the genetics of their cattle.
Herefords will always be the backbone of the farm and we are proud of our past and working for
the future. Through the generations, the Rankin family have helped and supported the Hereford events in Manitoba, from Manitoba Royal Winter Fair and Bull Sale, Ag. Ex., and the Bonanzas held here, and the Good as Gold Sales through exhibiting cattle or volunteering, there has been and continues to be a Rankin involved even in a very small way, it is who we are.
Blair, as did the generations before him feel it is an honour to be part of the Hereford Fraternity. He says he will keep raising Herefords as long as he can, why retire there is no fun in that!
Stephanie grew up on a mixed farm in the Erickson area. In 1984 Stephanie and Ray purchased their present location. The journey into the Hereford business was started in 1993 when they purchased cattle from Elizabeth Acres, the Campbells of Cypress River, and Happy Hollow Herefords, the Gibb Brothers.
Over the years Stephanie has supported her family in whatever they chose to be involved in. Took care of the paperwork for the farm and is a major part of the success of their operation, doing any job that is needed to be done.
In 2007 Stephanie took on the job of secretary of the MHA, and what a job she did. In January of 2013, she chose to step down as she felt it was time for someone else. During her tenure she kept amazing records, every detail taken care of. She also kept everything organized for the Manitoba Hereford Shows. In 2012, she and the family hosted the MHA Field Day, following the World Hereford Tour, as well as other events over time.
Through the years Stephanie has also worked off the farm, still keeping up with all she does on farm, it was always great to catch up with her at Walmart and have a visit and talk about the cattle. Stephanie always has a smile and a hello for everyone she meets, she has a fountain of information she is willing share, and is always busy taking care of the people she loves and their cattle.
The MHA are pleased to present Stephanie with the 2021 Stewardship Award in recognition for all she has done and continues to do for the Hereford Breed.
June 1, 2022
Inviting all Graduating Juniors to apply for a scholarship to further their education in any field, the Junior needs to send a brief write-up talking about Hereford/ Hereford influence cattle, show a letter of acceptance into a course, and give one breeder reference. Deadline June 1, 2022.
Holly and Kevin Hyndman, Rock’n “h” Herefords, Hamiota, are this year’s recipients of the Manitoba Hereford Association Stewardship Award and are a great asset to the MHA.
Holly has been on the board a number of years, starting around 2010. Both Holly and Kevin have worked tirelessly for the Junior organization, Bonanza committees as well as 4-H and the MHA. If they see something that needs to be done, or are asked to do something it is taken care of, quietly and efficiently. They are a great team.
Holly looks after the prizes for the MOE show at Ag Ex, in fact at times she has designed and made them herself, it is always fun to see what she is going to come up with! When Holly is busy with Hereford Association things Kevin is likely behind the scenes looking after the other stuff. Holly is the Treasurer for the MHA, and organizes the Fundraising.
Thank You Holly and Kevin for doing what you’re doing and continue to do for the Association.
Today’s progressive beef producers know the value of Hereford genetics in their breeding program. For maximum hybrid vigour, superior maternal ability, time-tested longevity, and easy to manage characteristics, Hereford’s unique value is critical for long term success. It’s time to better your beef, and better your business, with the tried and true benefit of Hereford.
