From the Editor
I am not sure where the year has gone... it feels like just yesterday I was writing my intro for the spring newsletter. A lot has happened since the spring!
Some of you might notice that the return address name for the newsletter is now Samantha Koroscil. I got married this summer and am pleased to welcome my husband, Trey, to the hereford family!
I would like to thank everyone that has helped put this issue together and for everyone that advertised. It was a busy summer and will be a busy fall! I wish you all the best with the upcoming sale and show season!
Thanks, Sam

MHA Report - Jay Rimke
I expect everyone had a successful summer with greener pastures and were able to gather up plenty of feed for the upcoming winter. Now as long as freeze up can hold off so we don’t have to start feeding too soon.
It was a busy summer between trying to get cattle out to pasture and trying to bale as much hay as you could. This summer’s MOE show took place in Lundar, entries were lower then anticipated. Here’s to hoping next year won’t be so busy for everyone and more can attend. There was a great turnout at the Manitoba Hereford Field Day this year that was held by RSK Farms in Brandon. There was over 100 head of cattle and over 80 people who attended. It was a toasty one out but with the great hospitality and great set of cattle everyone was able to bare through it.
I would like to welcome our new Executive Director Michael Latimer to the Canadian Hereford Association. I’m positive Michael will do an excellent job.
Ag Ex is being held in Brandon October 26-29. With the Hereford show being held on Oct. 28. I’m looking forward to seeing a great set of cattle at Ag Ex again. The Good as Gold Sale is being held on November 19 in Brandon at the Keystone Center. Our AGM is being held on December 11, 2022 at Joe Beeverz in Brandon at 2 pm. See everyone there.
I wish everyone a great fall ahead with fall shows, sales and harvest. That will hopefully lead into a desirable winter.
MJHA Report - Kennedy Manns
Welcome to the fall season! In July we had Bonanza that took place in Lindsay, Ontario. We had a pretty good turn out with lots of good cattle. We had three junior members attend; Teegan Hyndman, Kennedy Manns, and Bobbi Jo Foster. We also had our field day on August 20th and everyone did super well, with Lucas Bieganski as Champion Junior Judge, Emma Falconer as Champion Senior Judge and Kennedy Manns winning Reserve Championship Senior Judge along with Champion Senior Heifer. Watch for more information about the upcoming Ag Ex in Brandon. I wish everyone the best of luck with their upcoming female sales this fall and a good harvest!
CHA Report - Albert Rimke
Hello Everyone; as many of you are aware our Executive Director, Stephen Scott, left us the first week of June to take on a position with the Alberta Egg Producers. Almost immediately, a hiring committee was formed, which I was a part of. A lot of calls, a bunch of applicants, two sets of interviews and 3 months later the committee hired Michael Latimer. I would personally like to thank Stephen for all he did for the CHA during the last 8 years.
Many of you might know Michael from the Hereford circle. His parents Gary and Jacci and Uncle Bryan ran Remitall Cattle Co. for many years until their dispersal. Michael has a very stacked resume, working with the Canadian Beef Breeds Council and the Canadian Angus Association. He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our Association along with numerous Industry contacts. I’m glad to say after our first board meeting, Michael seems to have settled into the job very nicely.
Also, some of you might be aware that Gina also moved to the Alberta Beef Producers shortly after Bonanza and the AGM. We have not hired for this position as of yet, as we felt the new Executive Director should be a part of it. Also if you have ever phoned the CHA, you were greeted by a lovely voice. Janice Barton will retire the end of September. Janice has been there for many years - as long as I can remember. With that being said, it was decided to not go to an automated phone system, you will always be greeted by a staff member on the phone. Through all this the office ran very smoothly with very little hiccups. Thank you to the ladies in the office.
With that being said, hopefully we can get down to business and keep our great breed moving forward.
This is my 9th year as the Manitoba CHA director. It has been a great time representing Manitoba on the National level. Hopefully I filled your expectations. The first 3 years was spent getting to know a lot of the finer details. After that I chaired the show committee then the HBI committee. Being chair of the HBI is a real learning curve as details of the EPDs and Indexes
are discussed in depth. Being on this committee I went to 3 BIF (Beef Improvement Federation) Conferences. One in Athens, Georgia, one in Loveland, Colorado and one in Brookings, South Dakota. These conferences are very informative and I would encourage everyone to go. There will be one in Alberta in the coming years. Then I became vice president of the CHA, where you automatically sit on the pedigree committee which is very interesting! You realize that you are not the only one that screws up! Then as president I went to Denmark to their 50th anniversary, which was a great time! We met many great breeders and believe me, they know how to celebrate, the tours were prenominal and hospitality top notch! After that I went to New Zealand to the World Hereford Conference the end of February 2020, as everyone knows all hell broke loose, and the world shut down.
Things have changed within the breed association, all to the better, even the testing of new abnormalities.
Of course this all takes up time that I very much enjoyed. So in the last nine years my family has been busy holding down the fort. Not saying they weren’t busy also. Samantha and Levi both presidents of the CJHA and now Jay is president of the MHA. So needless to say there is one very important person that held us all together and kept us going. Thank you Michelle, without her, none of us would be where we are. So with that being said, thank you to my family and a huge thank you to the MHA members for supporting me these last nine years. I will be retiring as CHA director this year. So if you are interested in being the new CHA director, please join us for the MHA AGM in December. If you have any questions, give me a call.
Have a great fall!
Thank you everyone.
AlbertBetter calves start with better mothers.
In today’s beef market, smart producers take every advantage. Like the advantages that come with better-performing mothers. Hereford brings high fertility, ease of calving, and excellent milking and mothering traits to today’s best-performing herds. It’s time to better your beef, and better your business, with the timeless benefits of Hereford.

CHA New Executive Director - Micheal Latimer
The Canadian Hereford Association is pleased to announce that Michael Latimer will be the association’s new Executive Director effective September 1, 2022. “I am thrilled to make this announcement,” said CHA President Nels Nixdorff. “We are confident that under Michael’s direction the Hereford breed’s unique value to the beef business will remain strong.”
Michael previously served as Executive Director for the Canadian Beef Breeds Council where he managed the sector’s international market development program and scientific based technology transfer projects. While with CBBC he collaborated with the national beef organizations to establish the National Beef Strategic Plan and the Canadian Beef Industry Conference.
He also served as General Manager for the Canadian Angus Association where he oversaw the growth of the Canadian Angus Foundation and several collaborative marketing initiatives. He currently serves as Vice-President of Canadian Western Agribition and
Thank You Stephen Scott
The Manitoba Hereford Association would like to thank Stephen Scott for his many years of dedication to the Hereford Association as Executive Director. We hope to see you down the road!
has been involved in the Beef Supreme, International, and Commercial Cattle committees.
The Latimer family have a long history in the Hereford and Angus breeds. Michael and his family currently reside in Olds, Alberta.
“I am excited for the opportunity to return to my Hereford roots and build on the foundation laid by the organization’s leadership,” said Michael Latimer.
Retiring MJHA Adult Advisors - Albert & Michelle Rimke
The MJHA would like to send a special thank you to Albert & Michelle Rimke on being the Manitoba Junior Hereford Adult Advisor for the last 20+ years. Albert retired from the role this spring and we are humbled by the dedication him and Michelle gave to the juniors. The CJHA asked Albert these questions on his eperience as an adult advisor:
How long you were Adult Advisor for MB?
I have been an adult advisor for approximately 20+ years. Although I was on the forefront of Adult Advisor for Manitoba, I had an assistant behind the scenes which deserves credit as well, Michelle. We work as a team!
What roles did you have as a CJHA member?
I was very limited as to what I could do as a CJHA member primarily because of distance to travel to activities. I did attend Bonanza in Manitoba in 1980, but also participated in semen donation projects, and did go as a CJHA council rep in 1986 to Sherbrooke, Quebec. Michelle was more involved with CJHA national council and was head of the Calendar project for several years. She was also one of the co-chairs of Bonanza in 1988 in Brandon, MB. Michelle attended many Bonanzas when she was on the CJHA national council. I was barn boss in 1988 and 1994 in Manitoba. Michelle and I were part of organizing committee in 1999. We were also co-chairperson of Bonanza in 2006 and 2013, as well as 2020/2021 that did not happen in Manitoba due to covid. We will be a part of the organizing committee for 2024.
What is your fondest memory of being an Adult Advisor?
There are a few! Being able to attend 17 Bonanzas with our kids across Canada and watching all the juniors participate and watching them grow. Just being a part of the networking that is available to all the juniors is amazing. We enjoyed working with the national council and offering new programs and updating current programs. We are also very thankful for being the first couple/family to be recognized by the CJHA board as Friends of Bonanza 2014.
Any advice for current juniors?
Meet as many people as you can, we have meet so many people and many are now parents of current juniors. We have friends all across Canada! Participate in as many of the junior programs as you can, the CJHA offers these programs and works hard to make them available to all juniors at all levels. Get involved. One word of advice, parents, stay back, juniors can do it just give them the chance, this is how our kids learned. Juniors, thank your parents/grandparents for taking the time, effort and cost to take you to junior functions. For our family it was a family holiday that all of us could do together. Cherish your memories you make!
The MJHA would like to welcome Steven Manns as the new MJHA Adult Advisor! We look forward to the years ahead!
CHA Honour Roll Recipient - Don & Diane Guilford
The Canadian Hereford Association congratulates Don and Diane Guilford on their induction into the Canadian Hereford Association Honour Roll.
In 1965, Don Guilford became the third generation of his family to raise Herefords. He purchased his first heifer at the PJ MacDonald sale following in the footsteps of his father Frank and grandfather John who bought his first purebreds from W. Coldron of Glenora in 1924.
Don and wife Diane were married in 1971 and returned to the farm at Clearwater, MB to farm with Frank and his brother Dave. When Frank and wife Kae chose to retire in 1985 Dave and Don split the cowherd and in 1986 Don and Diane established Guilford Hereford Ranch using the prefix GHR. At the peak of their ranching careers, Don and Diane bred 380 cows and heifers. They dispersed their purebred polled Hereford and Black Angus cows in 2016. Currently they calve about 125 polled Hereford cows and have 46 purebred Black Angus cows leased to Old Shore Cattle Co. at Langruth, MB. They also custom graze 120 cow/calf pairs every summer.
Don and Diane’s show career has been limited, but when they were able to show they were always pleased with the results. One highlight of the showring was Premier Breeder and Premier Exhibitor at the 2005 Ag-Ex in Brandon. They have also shown at Canadian Western Agribition. The couple was also honoured with the Premier Purebred Breeder Award from Manitoba Agriculture in 1987 and in 1989 were awarded the Canadian Outstanding Young Farmers Award. More recently they were selected by the Manitoba Cattle Producers for their Environmental Stewardship Award.
Don was a director of the Manitoba Hereford Association for many years and served a term as president. He was the MHA representative on the Manitoba Beef Cattle Performance Bull Test Station at Douglas, MB. The station tested 600 yearling bulls and sold 300 of them by auction. Don volunteered as a pen rider at the station for 10 to 12 years.
Diane has played an integral role in the day-today operation of the ranch. From accounting to caring for livestock to raising three daughters and keeping
meals on the table. She is known for being a great hostess welcoming many guests to the ranch. Diane was a 4-H leader for over 10 years.
Don has had many reasons to be grateful for all the contributions she has made over the years. Her knowledge and abilities allowed Don to take part in seminars and to assume responsibilities on many boards and associations. He served as a Canadian Hereford Association director from 1997 to 1999 and chaired the Hereford Breed Improvement Committee. Don also served eight years as a director on the Manitoba Beef Producers Association including four years as president. He was the Manitoba representative on the National Advisory Board of Beef Cattle for 14 years, and spent 12 as Chair of the Pembina Valley School Board.
Guilford Hereford Ranch have marketed cattle to the USA, China, Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan. Don has managed quarantines for cattle sent to Russia, Ukraine and Kazakhstan for Xports International.
During their 40 plus years in the beef industry Don has taken many beef and grazing courses and seminars throughout western Canada and the northwest USA. Don has completed three holistic management courses and Diane has completed one. This interest has led to the couple hosting numerous pasture tours focused on pasture management and their unique breeding program. Don was also contracted by Manitoba Agriculture to mentor producers with respect to pasture management strategies and development of breeding programs. Don is the vice-chairman of Holistic Management Canada and was a director for the Manitoba Beef and Forage Initiatives from 2017 to 2020.
2022 MHA Scholarship Recipient - Alexa Guilford
Alexa Guilford is part of a multi generational Hereford family from Clearwater, MB. She has taken part in her local 4-H club for seven years, showing Hereford steers during this time. Alexa also took part in Bonanza in 2013. In 2016 Alexa bought her first bred Hereford heifer and continues to grow her purebred herd.
Alexa is also an accomplished sportswoman. She graduated from the Pilot Mound Collegiate and has been accepted to the University of Minnesota Crookston, where she will join the faculty of Animal Science with her focus being pre-vet. Alexa plans on working towards a degree in Veterinary Medicine with plans to return to Manitoba to work as a veterinarian.
Congratulations Alexa and Good Luck in your future endeavors!
2022 MHA Scholarship Recipient - Joseph Price
Joseph Price is from Elm Creek, MB. Joseph also comes from an extensive Hereford back round, with both sides of his family raising Hereford cattle for many years as well as his immediate family. He has been involved with the 4-H club in Elm Creek and shown at local shows with his family.
In his spare time, Joseph for the past 3 years has been working at a local dairy operation. He has taken part in hockey, volleyball, basketball, and soccer. Joseph graduated from Elm Creek Collegiate with Honours and has been accepted to the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where he will be entering the 2 year Mechatronics and Robotics Diploma Program.
Congratulations Joseph and Good Luck in your future endeavors!
Bonanza 2022
Lindsay, ON - July 26-30, 2022
Bonanza 2022 was held in Lindsay, ON the week of July 26 to 30, 2022. There were around 120 juniors and 200 head of cattle! The week went by quickly but everyone had a great time connecting with new and old friends! Bonanza 2022 was a huge success, congratulations to all juniors on their achievements!
Manitoba was represented by Bobbi-Jo Foster, Kennedy Manns and Teegan Hyndman with a total of 7 head. Congratulations to Teegan Hyndman with her Champion Bred and Owned Cow Calf Pair. These Manitoba juniors worked hard, mentored the younger junior members and had a great week out east!
Bonanza takes a lot of hours and dedication to host such a high caliber event. The MJHA would like to thank the Bonanza 2022 organizing committee and all the dedicated sponsors for their contribution to this amazing event. Special thank you to Copper Creek Ranch for their continuous support to Bonanza over the last 10+ years.
Bonanza 2023 is being held in Brudenell, PEI the week of July 25-29, 2023. We encourage all MB juniors to head out to PEI for a great week-long event!

Hereford Farewells
Elizabeth (Betty) Larsen (nee Bosomworth)
With sadness we announce the loss of our mother, granny and great granny on April 7, 2022 at the age of 89. Elizabeth was born one of eight children on April 1, 1933, on the family farm near Carstairs, AB. She married Svend Larsen on November 20, 1957 and they lived near Carstairs until they moved to Cochrane in 1965. In 1980 they moved from Cochrane to Innisfail, AB, where they continued to farm with dairy and beef cattle. In the fall of 2001 they moved to Russell, MB, near Silver Beach.
Her father’s Ayrshire herd name Glen Nethy, the third oldest registered Ayrshire herd in Canada, was transferred to them as they started to raise purebred Ayrshires at Cochrane and the dairy herd continued until the dispersal in 1990. The Ayrshire breeding stock were exhibited across Canada and at Madison, Wisconsin, with many sales of breeding stock and semen. Numerous high production awards where achieved and Canadian records were set with the herd. The many awards from exhibitions and stock sales were a highlight of her life.
Elizabeth served on the Alberta Ayrshire Club for many years and served on the Canadian Ayrshire Association as a delegate. Her involvement with the Ayrshire breed gave her a great deal of pride and enjoyment. Breeding the Ayrshires was dear to her heart and the dispersal was a very sad day. Even in her last days she would look for the Ayrshire cows at Laurie’s farm and watch them from the house.
The purebred Herefords were started in 1987, although they had raised commercial Herefords since 1957. She continued to manage all the registrations and records for the Herefords until her health diminished in 2018. Raising purebred breeding stock of the highest quality was always paramount. She enjoyed attending the sales, local shows and field days. The purebred Hereford herd acquired the herd name Glennethy and continues on with son Allen.
Elizabeth was able to live on her own in her own house and Allen has always remained on the farm and was there to care for her. She moved in with Laurie at Grandview in November 2021 for her final months of care.
Peter F. Wiens, age 89, of Grunthal, MB, passed away at his home on Wednesday, April 20, 2022. Peter was predeceased by his wife Anne, and their infant son Stanley. He was married to Anne for 67 years, and together they had four children. In the early years, he worked as a pulp cutter in a sawmill. He was employed for a time at Manitoba Sugar as well as in road construction. While in Prince George, he worked as a heavy equipment operator.
Peter came back to Steinbach where he enrolled at Steinbach Bible College and graduated in 1962. Later he went to minister with the Shantymen Organization. He was with this mission for 18 years. From there, he joined the Union Gospel Crusaders and ministered with them for another 20 years. He did many devotional services and mission work. During this time Peter also worked hard at his plumbing business, Wiens Backhoe Service and built his Hereford operation registered under Wiens Herefords. He enjoyed renovating residential properties, farming the land, traveling, fishing and camping.
