THE 1960S In the Sixties Sindy got her first kitchen scenesetters. She simply got a sink unit in a cheery sunflower yellow and cornflower blue colourway. It went perfectly with her blue and cream folding table and chairs set - which today is a highly sought-after piece!

Sindy got the must-have modern fitted kitchen in the mid-1970s with her new yellow Eastham E-Line; based on the Thomas Eastham & Son Ltd. designs originally launched in Blackpool, England. Incorporating materials like laminated plastic (Formica) and polystyrene linings meant these new sleek fitted designs were afforable and easier to clean.

Harvest gold is a shade of orange and yellow. It was a very popular colour for kitchen and other appliances during the 1970s, along with brown, burnt orange, and avocado green.

Shiny copper accents, accessories and pendants give some added warmth.

Let it shine by pairing with neutral tones such as French Grey or Bone China Blue.

The kitchen collection in America featured a Refrigerator. Licensed by Marx, in 1978 they launched a huge double-doored cooler in a paler hue to the Eastham Line. It had white interior fittings, shelves and deep drawers.

THE 1979 SINDY BROCHURE

CLEAN CORNERS

The Eastham ‘E-LIne’ kitchen first launched in 1976 and consisted of a Hob Unit, Sink Unit, Wall Oven, Floor Cupboard and a single Wall Cupboard.

The Magic Cooker, launched in 1980, came with orange cookware.

The clean lines of the Easthan ‘E-Line’ means it fits corners perfectly.

KITCHEN MAGIC! The new Action Kitchen Unit (1982) was a stylish mix of marigold yellow and brown and, as well as lots of cupboard space, it had many battery-operated extras. This was clearly made possible after the introduction of the Sindy Magic Cooker from 1980, which had all the aspects of a real cooker for total realism in the kitchen.

The Action Kitchen unit has 4 light-up hob rings and a light-up oven which housed a black internal shelf.

The sink had a tap that circulated water in the sink, and next to that an operating food mixer/blender.

The light-up oven can sense what’s cooking and make the right noises at the right time - just like magic! It also has a timed buzzer for perfectly cooked rotisserie chicken.

Has everything except the heat!

Put the kettle on the hob and it will build up to a whistle, or hear the hiss as your sausages sizzle in the pan. (Battery operated).

The new decade brought the ‘cherry-wood’ effect sink unit, cooker unit and matching refrigerator, which offered high-value play potential, and gave Sindy an instant fitted kitchen with real working extras. Today these are possibly some of the most beloved pieces in the Sindy home.

The battery-operated Cooker Unit was released in 1983.

The splashbacks were printed with yellow tiles, a window, and modern accessories.

The marketing said ‘Sindy’s new kitchen has real style action and play value.’

Sindy could be the queen of the kitchen in the 80s with these modern units.

The pink Sindy kitchens of the late eighties were really a trend in doll’s furniture at the time. Although, Barbiecore saw a resurgence in pink interiors in 2023 onwards.

A colourful, coordinated kitchen showed off Sindy’s impeccable taste.

The 1993 versions came with a freezer compartment and a bar for hanging those utensils.

The ‘Light and Sound Kitchen’ had microwave, cooker and TV sounds, and a ringing phone.

The 1989 kitchencome-cafe was the perfect place to entertain, eat, sit and hang out.

KITCHEN CHAT Beth Rockmore, 58 lives in Covington, Georgia USA with her husband and two sphynx cats.

She has two grown-up children and a grandson.

I’ve been an artist since I was five years old. My first masterpiece was applied to my mother’s newlypainted white hallway. I used all the colors in my crayon box to scribble a mural! She was not pleased, but I knew right then that I was blessed with a talent and that I would be an artist when I grew up! I have been creating art ever since, from paintings to tattoos, but my favorite art is miniatures!

I was always fascinated with Barbie type dolls, and as a child I would make rooms and furniture for them out of cardboard boxes. My mom taught me how to sew at a young age; we started with tiny pillows and bedding for Barbie, then onto clothes. I started my miniatures business about seven years ago, when my mom decided to buy a doll’s house kit. We couldn't find a pre-made kitchen that she liked for it - so I made her a custom one. I had so much fun making things for her doll house that I just kept on making.

I upped the scale to 1:6 because it fit my dolls, and because this size furniture and rooms can be harder to find.

For my shop I design and hand make everything, and my husband cuts out all of the wood and even helps assemble. My children also help me come up with innovative new ways to create things. I’ve a successful Etsy store. I have been very blessed.

SINDY STYLE I love to use Sindy kitchens in my dioramas because there are several styles, and they are the most realistic looking. They also have working doors on them and that is important.

PREP

DECORATE

I start by washing the kitchens and giving them a good scrub and/or soak. Once dry, I spray paint them with a good primer - I like Rust-Oleum. I leave them to dry for several days before I spray any colour on.

I like to use fabric as my wallpaper, as it’s much easier to work with and you have a broader choice of styles and colour. I use craft glue and simply spread a thin layer on each wall and then lay the fabric on it.

TIP: Use painters’ tape to mask off the counter tops and any parts that you don't want to paint.

TIP: To decorate the doors and countertops I like to use peel and stick vinyl to cover them.

BUILD

DESIGN

The diorama boxes that I use are custom built 1:6 scale, made by my husband.

I often paint the floors in a checkerboard pattern, or I will use peel and stick contact paper.

TIP: You can also use a heavy cardboard box with a side removed.

TIP: If using the peel and stick you will want to apply it to poster board first, then glue the poster board to the diorama floor if using a wood box.

THE 1960S Sindy became a bathing beauty in 1968 with her very first bath. In modern pastel shades of powder blue and bubblegum pink, this all-in-one suite was just what our girl needed.

In the mid century pink and/or blue bathrooms were extremely popular, especially in America. In the 1950s their First Lady Mamie Eisenhower was very fond of the colour pink. So much so that her private quarters were decorated in the soft shade that was dubbed ‘Mamie pink’.

A black and white tiled floor is stunning against the powdery pastel hues.

Sindy’s bath came with a variety of accessories, a monogrammed towel and a robe.

A battery-operated pump circulated water out through the detachable spray.

This modernised bath shape was launched with a brown bath mat, towel and flannel.

The bathroom of the seventies was warm and cosy with earthy tones, and mixed with textures like wood and stone. Colours included harvest gold, avocado green, and burnt orange.

This double page advertisement for the luxury bathroom suite showed fans the complete set of colour co-ordinated pieces. They also offered a bathroom gift set which included a bath, basin, toliet and towelling accessories.

The brown towelling accessories matched the brown accents perfectly, as did Sindy’s ‘Pyjama Party’ outfit.

If you had the Sindy house there was never quite enough room for the whole bathroom suite!

The pedestal sink unit was launched in 1978 and was ideal for Sindy’s small bathroom.

The matching bath tray or caddy on this bath style holds all those beauty essentials.

SINK STYLE

The late 1970s bathroom trends included dusty and muted pastels. Just like this teal toned set launched in 1978 by Marx, who sold Sindy in the USA under the Pedigree licence.

The teal was teamed with sunny yellow accessories.

The same shower design was offered the teal was really offset with the white accents.

Pedestal sinks never go out of fashion and continued to be the shape of choice for Sindy in the UK and USA.

THE EARLY 1980S A new decade and a fresh new bathroom. Out with the earthy tones and in came the sky blues. These softer shades offered a relaxing environment in the decade of excess.

As we mentioned, pastels were huge, as was tropical and tiki style decor. Sunken baths, stairs leading up to the bath, oversized mirrors, and built-in cabinets.

The bathroom plant of choice was the fern, giving that tropics feel (and the fact they love moist air).

The sink style remained the same, but the colour was bang up-to-date.

SHE SELLS SEASHELLS

UNDER THE SEA

Shell-shaped pedestal sinks, or sunken shellshaped basins were hot in the 80s. As was oversized shell ornaments, shaped dishes to hold soaps, or bowls filled with smaller seashells.

The more feminine shell-shaped sink with a larger reflective mirror came in 1985.

CLAM SHELL Also in 1985 Sindy got a matching walk-in shell bottom shower with full-length clear doors.

THE LATE 1980S Later in the decade bathroom trends leaned towards being a more feminine space (maybe we were spending more time on our hair and make-up?). Softer colours, floral papered walls, shell-shaped basins, wicker laundry baskets and, the ultimate in luxury, a corner bath.

LAVENDER HAZE

1987 UPDATE

The feminine touch continued with a rainbow of dusty lilac shades. Call it lavender, periwinkle or wisteria, no doubt this warmer shade updated Sindy’s bathroom in 1987. A versatile shade that works with turquoise, burgundy, pinks, and even olive green.

This lilac bath with shell soap holder is quite hard to find - but worth the hunt.

Once again the design stayed the same, but the pastel colours got a modern re-fresh.

THE 1990S Less of an interiors trend and more the start of the Barbie effect, as scenesetters launched by Hasbro got a bubblegum update and came in a variety of bright pink shades.

The interior hangover from the 80s - pastel pink, peach and blue bathrooms stayed until we could afford to whitewash.

This 1994 bathing unit was ideal for modern spaces like Sindy’s new ‘Star Home’.

The pink shell vanity unit suited Sindy - and her tiny bathroom space.
