October 2025 marks the fiftieth issue of Mam’selle. Yes, that’s right, 5-0 Sindy magazines created especially for you! Little did I know when I soft launched the first September issue in August 2021 that I would still be here sharing the Sindy love. Of course, it's all been with the help of your amazing images, ideas, stories and enthusiasm - so, here’s to the next 50!

Over the next 35 pages I will share with you the massive highs, a few lows and a little insider information on how each cover and issue came together.

THE LAUNCH ISSUE A NEW SINDY MAGAZINE I had started planning and working on Mam’selle months before the launch. I knew I wanted the first issue to be the September issue. In publishing, this is a key issue that marks a fresh start, sets the tone for the season, and is like a ‘new year’ for magazine readers. It is also, more importantly, Sindy’s birthday month. I set the publishing date for the 6 th of each month (Sindy’s date of birth), to help keep me on track and stick to a deadline.

And so the September issue of Mam’selle was born on 6 th August 2021 and launched on Issuu for the first time.

STORY I had already decided on the logo font and colour, and I had just taken some pictures of my new Gauntlet. This made the first cover relatively easy, as I liked the fact the image showed her out and about, had some eye contact to draw in readers, and it just felt welcoming and friendly everything we know Sindy to be! This Sindy is known as Penelope, and she also became the official ‘Editor’ of Mam’selle.

AND A FACE TO FIT! Mam’selle was - and will always be - for the Sindy community. It has never been about me, so I wanted the ‘Editor’ to be one of my dolls. I had just taken some images of Penelope as a ‘magazine editor’ for a Sindy careers series I was sharing on Instagram, so it felt right to make her ‘the face and voice’ of Mam’selle.

WHY MAM’SELLE? Coming up with a magazine name isn’t easy. You need something memorable - and ideally one that connects with your target audience.

You want them to instantly know what the magazine is going to be about. Mam’selle was an early contender for me (over using Sindy or something with ‘doll’ in the title, which was suggested to me).

Primarily, for me it sounded like the stylish vintage women’s magazines I read when I was at fashion college in the 1990s; like the classic Mademoiselle (a fashion magazine launched in the 1930s, that folded in 2001) and Mirabella (a magazine created and named after Grace Mirabella, a former Vogue editor, in 1989 and lasting until 2000). Obviously, there was also its stylish link to the Sindy fashion collection from the 1960s.

THE NEXT FEW MONTHS FINDING OUR FEET The next issue seemed to come around fast. Once again I relied on some images of my Gauntlets I had recently taken. Margot made the October issue cover. For the next issue I really wanted to use a fellow collector’s image. I really loved this shot and felt it would be very strong changed into a black and white image for this bigger (44 page) issue.

THE FIRST CHRISTMAS & A DOUBLE ISSUE The December issue was a real turning point for me. I felt I had found my stride with how I wanted the magazines to look and feel. The first Christmas themed Mam’selle included some pages that I felt were current, relevant and useful (like doll inspired gifts for us), and included some interesting features like the interview with Sarah @polly.dollydaydreams on her limited fashion collection with artist Sarah Graham. I also included a behind-the-scenes at Dollycon (an annual doll conference) and Sindy dressed up as iconic pop stars. Mam’selle was starting to feel like a project with purpose: a way to connect the doll community with what was going on, what other collectors were doing, and somewhere to showcase our shared passion.

THE NEW YEAR & THE START OF PRINT The January issue is a tricky one - you want to herald the new year, but being published in December you still want a slightly festive feel. As soon as I saw this image I knew it was the one: the tartan, the green ribbon… and who can resist a redhead Sindy? For the following month I wanted to try a more themed issue - and romance was in the air. I used my sad face, Nancy, for the cover, as I had just photographed her in a snowy scene I had set up in the lounge.

But, you collectors had other ideas... you wanted a printed version and you weren’t afraid to say it! After looking into it, I took the plunge, and took advice from my boss at the time about pricing and selling. She assured me that speciality magazines were a unique thing and not to under value the time and energy it would take for me to produce and mail out.’

CONTRIBUTORS The next few issues went by in a bit of a blur, as I had so many ideas I wanted to share. Thankfully so (so) many of you trusted me to use your images in these features, with me often using them in other ways (like as movie posters, or as a vintage style photo story, that reminded me of the old Sindy annuals and my fave teenage magazine Jackie.) I also started to offer a Mam’selle 6-month subscription to help spread the cost of printing and make the monthy admin a little easier.

A SUPPLEMENT ‘I decided early on that I wanted Mam’selle to include little parts of Sindy history. I wasn’t setting out to rewrite a detailed history. You can find that in various doll books and on various websites. It felt like I had achieved this when I reached out to Ron van Blokland (and his mother Corry van Blokland Mobach) to talk to them about the Sio caravan, that Corry and her late husband Rokus had designed. I had such an amazing email conversation with Ron, and they were both thrilled I wanted to share it. This felt like a really special moment for Mam’selle and me. I was joining up the Sindy dots.’

THE ADDED EXTRAS I started to plan and map out issues far in advance. I needn’t have worried about running out of ideas they just kept coming. It was getting to the point where things I wanted to do were going to take up too many pages. So, like the supplements I loved that often came with Vogue or Red magazine, Mam’selle launched its first special supplement. As I had just made over my newly acquired wooden caravan, I was in a little Sindy caravan bubble!

GAINING CONFIDENCE Themed issues were something I wanted to explore, and they also helped me contain and condense ideas into a workable amount. At this point I was up at all hours (with a part time job, a family and home schooling during Covid), scribbling ideas down, searching for images and trying to design readable pages. I am not a trained graphic designer - so my designs are not perfect, but I enjoy doing them and Canva (which I use to design the magazine) is amazing for templates.

Cover image: @sindyandme The August issue was the first time I had included more than one doll on the cover. I love this image by Julie @sindyandme - it just felt so carefree and fun, and with lots of lovely space for the title and cover-lines!

FIRST BIRTHDAY MAM’SELLE IS ONE! The first birthday issue was looming and I had an idea for the cover, and I tried so hard to capture this. Looking back, it isn’t perfect. There are things I would change, but I still love it. The colour, the composition and the dress - I love this Hasbro dress! It was a small milestone, but it was my milestone and I wanted to mark it with a birthday themed issue. I couldn’t believe I had made it a whole year! And I was still feeling as enthusiastic as day one.

Never has Mam’selle felt like work, (well apart from the pack, wrap and post day!).

‘After successfully having an online launch party (this is where we share photographs using the same #), and our first Christmas soiree, I went on to host our first birthday party. It’s such an honour when others take the time to join in, dress up their dolls and tag you in their images. Subscribers also received a small slice of birthday cake, a glass of bubbles and a birthday card, so everyone could join in the celebrations.’

AUTUMN/WINTER 2022 BRANCHING OUT The next few covers I had already planned and prepared. I knew Gayle had to feature some time and Basia captured her so perfectly here for the October issue. The November issue was truly inspired by this image. Once again, Gabriel had allowed me to use his images and this cover is everything! Hell, I even sent a copy to the current editor at Vogue house!

They may never have seen it, but I wanted to share this passion project that was making me (and you all, it seemed) very happy.

FESTIVE ISSUES & A COVER COMPETITION I had been working so hard on the last few issues that I felt like I just needed some help. I reached out to the community with a cover competition for the December issue. And basically you wonderful people stepped up and the Mam’selle community grew.

The first issue of 2023 was a shot I had taken a while back remember that snowy scene I mentioned I had set up in my lounge? Daphne stepped up and popped on a ski outfit during my lockdown snow shoot.

I often spot a cover image long before I need it. I prepare them in advance, and they usually influence the theme, tone and mood of that issue. Like this image of the new collector’s dolls by Rebecca. It helped cement the ‘friendship’ themed features I was already planning. And this image by the late Nicola was initially just going to be a cover page for a Mother’s Day feature inside the magazine. But I changed my mind and it’s still one of my favourite covers ever. I also wanted to try some different styles, and this one of the back of Sindy’s head by Jane just summed up Easter, spring and the new season. A magazine without a ‘face’ image is a risk - but this was all just a bit of fun, right?

‘I hadn’t intended to do another supplement so soon, but a competition in the Vintage Sindy Facebook group led to this. In hindsight, it was a lot of work and took me months to complete. It wasn’t something I wanted to repeat any time soon!’

May had become wedding season for Mam’selle, so I followed last year’s cover with another bridal special. I had also discovered collector Sky on Flickr and am forever grateful as she continues to share her amazing images with me.

One of my early Sindy friends, Marguerite, is always sharing images of her Sindy taken on her work trips - this Paris one was a winner for me. This capture shaped the career issue too. It was always thrilling for me to use my Sindy friend’s images as covers and I made it a mission to do this often.

FUN IN THE SUN! RETURN TO PLAYTIME One thing I was using as a resource for ideas was the original Sindy annuals. I had already started to share photo stories, so I thought, why not some puzzles? I loved the puzzle pages in Jackie, Bunty and The Beano as a child.

Because I didn’t have enough to do (!), I decided to create a puzzle special! Sometimes an idea takes over me and I can’t help myself. The August issue was a shot I had taken casually on holiday, not expecting to use it as a cover.

Sindy’s big birthday was looming.

I had already planned the content for the magazine to mark her 60 th year, including a feature to celebrate fellow collectors also born in 1963. I had already asked another very early Sindy friend, Matthew @dollsabouttown, if he could do me a cover. I knew immediately that Matthew would produce the perfect cover - and I was right! This issue sold out and it was this cover image that did it.

It was also a bumper 60 pages natch!

The winter season issues came together easily, as I had already designed and pre-written some features and had a few covers waiting in the wings. I love the autumnal colours of these images and I adore Kat’s photographs.

This side profile one stuck with me for a long time - I just knew I had to use it at some point.

‘I said I didn’t want to do another supplement so soon after the last one, but here we are! This supplement really only happened because, once I understood what Martina from The Little Sindy Museum was up to, I realised that a few pages in an issue wasn’t going to do it justice. Also, I wanted to mark and celebrate the passion she was putting into her #saveasindy project. Martina helped me so much with this - images, captions, words, proofreading - I was actually getting really excited to share it with everyone.’

WINTER STYLE & KEEPING IT SIMPLE Here we are again with the festive and new year issues and I really was starting to feel like I had exhausted my options. But, yet again, my lovely Sindy friends stepped in and shared with me some amazing images. They put the finishing touches to issues that I’ll often be working on during the busy festive period in my real-life career, to get them published in time on 6th November and 6th December.

‘In all honesty, I was stuck for a Christmas cover - and Matthew saved the day with this shot he had taken a while back. It was also cute to see the little gem brooch on Sindy - as this was a gift when you took out the new subscription a few months earlier.’

ANIMAL MAGIC

& A MASSIVE TASK AHEAD Instagram has brought many wonderful Sindy friends into my life, and none more so than Sue @sewist53. I was well aware she was due a cover too! This image was it.

It led to a family themed issue - which was a great way for me to share all the amazing images I was saving from Instagram of family and baby set-ups, and all those pet images we seem to love.

‘I had really wanted to feature a Smirky on the cover, as - love her or hate her - this image is so cute! In fact, this cover actually made me go on to purchase a couple!’

I remember around this time my work and family life was especially busy. A new Sindy friend, Karen, and I had previously agreed with The Chippenham Museum in Wiltshire and Pedigree to curate an exhibition to celebrate Sindy’s 60th birthday. The bi-annual Sindy Set Meets I was organising was getting bigger and, on top of that, I had some ongoing health issues and some changes in my professional life. The magazines were getting bigger and bigger ideas kept coming as your images were inspiring new features and topics. I was feeling overwhelmed and in need of a break.

I was tired of the admin around printing/sending the issues each month.

But, alas, I couldn’t stop! The themes kept coming and my passion was ignited (the exhibition, the meet-ups, your kind messages). I couldn’t give it all up - so I leaned on you all once again for covers, features and images.

SPOTLIGHT ON PAUL Confession: I don’t have a Paul doll or any male doll for that matter. They don’t interest me. I have always preferred thinking of Sindy as a girlie-girl, like a character from Sex and the City or my vintage fave The Golden Girls. Despite this, I felt like Paul deserved some love - so I turned the spotlight on him and his fashions.

I was beyond thrilled when Ernesto, an amazing USA based photographer, allowed me to use his beautifully styled images. They really lifted this issue to another level.

OUT OF THIS WORLD I hadn’t planned to do three themed issues almost back-to-back. But, when my good Sindy pal Cathy from @jollydollyshop suggested a Space feature, I did a search for images on Instagram, and knew we were onto something bigger than ‘a special feature’. Also, the anniversary of the moon landing was looming, so the stars had aligned! Cathy helped so much with this issue - she produced a whole set-up, enlisted her friend’s DIY help, and generally kept me afloat during this busy time.

A COMP OR TWO SAVES THE DAY I was already a massive fan of Antonia's Sindy clothing and accessories - and I think she has had more adverts in Mam’selle than any other maker. Her images of her Spanish Gauntlets and her Kid Kreations dolls are always a joy, and the Spanish sunshine helps! Antonia had never had a cover - so I was thrilled to share this one (I had been saving it for a while).

A NEW SINDY ARRIVES As I had mentioned life was, well... life! I was working ahead as much as I could, but all your support is really what kept Mam’selle going. A few competitions helped to engage readers, and the cover comp for the September issue saved the day when I had nothing planned for the birthday issue. My dear friend Kevin had not had a cover by this point, but he won me over with this stunning image of the new anniversary doll. It was the perfect issue to showcase her especially as we had waited a whole year for her arrival!

TAKE A BREAK ‘Once again I turned to Sky @sindytude for a cover. This simple image of Weekender Sindy was just what I was looking for after a few themed issues.’

I was planning the winter issues in the summer and, as I had mentioned, I was getting overwhelmed by this hobby that had become so much more. So, I decided I needed to take a proper break. The only thing I was willing to do while I decided if I was going to carry on publishing - was pause printing for a few months to catch up with myself. The next three issues were published online only. I wasn’t sure how long it would be before printing resumed. I just knew something had to give.

THE 4OTH ISSUE & IT’S BUMPER PACKED Some issues write themselves and this is one of them. I had planned this cover as soon as I saw this image by Kevin @sharingsindy. Like I said previously, I wanted him to have his first cover - however, he actually ended up winning the September cover competition before this came out, so got two within a few months. The Taylor Swift feature at 31 pages was a real labour of love, and I dedicated it to my tween daughter. We had been to the Eras Tour and the lovely Clare @action_mans_nan had made me the folklore cardigan - and one comp and numerous entries later I created a feature that brought me nothing but happiness. I am a ‘Swiftie’ and Sindy wasn’t afraid to share it for me!

A NEW CHAPTER RETURN TO PRINT It seemed I couldn't hold off any longer - you were all missing the printed copies. 2025 saw their glossy return. One collector, Sue @sewist53 so wanted the issues back that she sent me an early morning email with so many ideas for a food special that she basically filled a whole issue. For the first time ever I ‘recruited’ a co-editor and Sue was amazing. She styled the cover, and oversaw every page.

‘Like I have said before, the January issue can be tricky, as it crosses over with the festive season.

The previous month’s issue was so ‘Christmas’ I was actually thrilled to find an image by the lovely Helen that was cosy, yet so modern. I adore the colours on that handmade knitted set too.’

KEEP GOING WITH SINDY FRIENDS I was continuing to make it my mission to use as many Sindy friends’ images for covers as possible. I wanted to show them that I appreciated their support.

Many featured this year have shared images, written features, sent me Sindy treats, and generally been the best dolly friends ever.

SPRING FORWARD ‘I had this image saved for a while. The whole capture is breathtaking - the composition, the light, the daisy. I knew it would be a lovely spring cover. It was on the April and May template for a while - but finally got its moment in June.’

Then I discovered it was the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth - and suddenly the pages just came together and made a wonderful 18-page special feature with fashion, travel, books, and even a competition fit for a lady!

Sometimes issues come together a little too easy. I put that down to all your wonderful images, set-ups, dioramas and energy.

Honestly, your images inspire me day and night when I am scrolling to come up with fun features, fresh ways to share Sindy’s history, and plan out those seasonal issues. I knew these two images would suit the ‘high summer’ issues, so they sat on the cover page templates ready to go.

‘I’ve admired Alex’s images for a long time, so wanted to make one of them a cover at some point. This image was one of two that I loved (same doll and set-up, the other just standing).

But this one won, as that pose, that reflection... gorgeous! Anyway, I used the other image inside, so I really didn’t have to agonise over the decision too much.’

4TH BIRTHDAY ISSUE AND 49 ISSUES DOWN This issue, for some reason, felt big and like it would never get done. I’m not sure if it’s because it’s the Mam’selle birthday issue (where I also include a massive round-up of all your images from the last 12 months of your dolls reading a mini issue), or because the planning falls just as the school holidays are beginning. Life is also busy - but I always try to make time for Mam’selle. I do hope you all realise I appreciate every purchase, read, share and mention this mag means so much to me.

THE 50TH ISSUE OCTOBER 2025 To be honest, I wasn’t sure what to use as a cover image for the 50th issue.

Sometimes I have a clear vision and other times I wait to see what images grab me from your feeds.

Kathleen was a new Sindy friend (and actually we realised I had purchased one of my dolls from her on eBay). So, it felt like a special moment to give her first cover. I feel like this ‘circle of Sindys’ represents our favourite doll perfectly.

‘I actually can’t believe I am at fifty issues! It's not a massive milestone - but it is to me. The planning, designing and printing of this mini glossy you are holding has come to mean so much to me. In my head I had planned to get to 50, or maybe 60, issues and then stop! So, we’ll have to see what happens...’

SINDY SPECIALS NO PLACE LIKE HOME! I said before that I didn’t want to just churn out the history of Sindy there are plenty of books and websites for that. I wanted to showcase her legacy in a fun and more editorial way. When I dreamt up this Houses issue, I envisioned each of the pages to read like houses for sale or rent flyers with each licensee becoming the ‘estate agents’. It took me a while, but I’m really proud of this debut standalone issue.

‘Planning and production on this issue took some time, as I had to go through all my archives to work out exactly how many homes Sindy has had. It was pure luck that the last Sindy house by Kid Kreations launched a month or so before I had planned to print, so I could include it. I would have been a little sad to have missed it out.’

DANBURY MINT

SINDY JOURNAL

If you have a Danbury Mint Sindy, you know how special she is. I wanted to do her justice with a special feature, especially when I realised she was turning 18. I researched and managed to get in touch with one of the designers, Anne Zielinski-Old. Anne kindly met me in London for lunch and told me her story. She gave me access to her unseen files, illustrations and the original ideas.

I was blown away - and I knew you all would be too. This issue was a subscription only issue - it was my gift to those who had supported me along the way.

Like I didn’t have enough going on, another idea came to me - as they do when you are really busy!

It started because I was writing Sindy ideas, lists and notes on various jotters, on my phone and in the back of my diary. So I thought I needed a journal to keep all my musings together. Thus, the Sindy Journal was born! It included pages for writing thoughts, scrapbook style pages for sticking in images, places to keep track of your spending, wish-lists and Sindy friends’ details, and even a few colouring pages. They sold out instantly. Now do I re-print?

25 KITCHENS & BATHROOMS A little like the houses special, a feature on Sindy’s many kitchens and bathrooms was going to need some space. In tandem with working on the regular Mam’selle issues, I once again set about doing another special! I tried to make it easy for myself by setting it out in decades, and wanted it to feel like a catalogue/brochure, as though Sindy was buying a new bathroom suite or redoing her kitchen. I was thrilled when Beth @the_atomic_doll agreed to do an interview and allow me to use her images. I love this cover so much.

IN MEMORY OF THE QUEEN OF HEARTS This issue came about after I saw some posts on Matthew’s @dollsabouttown feed. As a fashion designer, he knows his stuff. I was captivated by his posts sharing images and his knowledge of the late Diana, Princess of Wales’ fashion looks. And then suggesting how she may have influenced the Pedigree designers of Sindy’s 1980's wardrobe. I shared this idea with the one person I knew who would understand my brief - to shoot Sindy as Diana in said fashions.

Sky @sindytude absolutely nailed the brief, and I’m eternally grateful for the hard work and enthusiasm she put into this project. I think Diana would have been amused by this, don’t you?

MAM’SELLE 50 ISSUES

BIG 6-0 THE SOUVENIR SPECIAL With permission and support from Pedigree, I started working on a bumper special issue to mark Sindy’s 60 th anniversary, to publish at the same time in September 2023. As the special issue grew, I realised I needed some more time to finish. I then decided that launching to coincide with the Sindy Exhibition (I was helping to curate) in March 2024 may be better timing. Alas, it wasn’t to be. As I mentioned before, life got crazy and I got behind, and I really did want it to include images and a feature on the new anniversary doll. As we know, she was delayed, so I took a breather and decided I would finish the issue when she could be added.

Sindy at Sixty was a massive 136 pages. I included (hopefully) all the names of collectors, brands and services that helped me bring this project to life. My 7-year-old self (this is my prime Sindyobsession age) still can’t believe I am doing all this Sindy stuff - it continues to blow my mind!

Thank you for indulging me as I looked back over the last 50 issues.

I say issue, as it was always meant to be a printed ‘special’. It was actually a fellow Sindy collector who suggested I make it a hardback issue, and more of a keepsake. I took a risk and paid more than I could really afford to make it special - printing a glossy hardback, adding a ribbon marker, wrapping with tissue and branded stickers, and also including a thank you card to potential buyers. To my absolute amazement it sold out almost instantly, so I did another small print run to meet demand. It was a labour of love - and I thank you all for supporting my crazy ideas!

DollyBeats Read the story of how Sindy met the iconic 1960's band, the Dollybeats, and how they came to write a song just for her.

Two years ago, Cliff Warwick was a 2nd year student at a Liverpool art school.

At the end of term Cliff was in charge of the big students’ ball. Because all the good groups were unattainable, Cliff was stuck for music.

Cliff and his mates decided they would do a few numbers themselves.

They clicked and that was the beginning of the Dollybeats!

They were such a success at the students’ ball, that someone asked them to play one night at a fabulous all-night coffee bar in Liverpool.

A talent scout from London just happened to be there the night Cliff and the Dollybeats played there. He was so impressed with their sound, he signed them up - there and then - to do a tour with one of the big groups.

It was during this tour that Sindy first heard about Cliff Warwick and the Dollybeats.

Meet the

DollyBeats Cliff Warwick: Leader and Vocalist When not touring, Cliff spends his time composing numbers for the group or catching up with foreign films he might have missed. He likes travel, good food and well dressed girls. Cliff’s ambition: to do an American tour and become a film director.

Terry Coombes: Lead Guitar

Paul May: Bass Guitar

Terry designs and supervises the outfits for the group. In his spare time he’s a serious painter and has had several one-man exhibitions.

Some day Terry would like to become an architect.

A vital member of the group, Paul writes the lyrics for all the Dollybeats numbers. He’s a keen fan of modern jazz and has a large record collection. Paul is a good cook and wants to own a restaurant some day.

LIVE IN CONCERT

R. B. Graham: Drums ‘R.B.’ (as he likes to be called) is the only non-Liverpool member of the Dollybeats. He hails from Westonsuper-Mare. When not beating his drums, ‘R.B.’ is studying to be an actor and hopes to star in a West End play some day.
