Jane Austen was an English novelist who is known for her six classic novels set in the Regency era. Her stories centred on romance, family, status, and the expectations society placed on women in the 18th century. Her sharp wit, social commentary, and ironic tone made fun of the English middle and upper classes’ behaviour and etiquette, in a time when a woman's future was dependent on marrying a wealthy or powerful man.

During her active years it was rare for women to be published authors, so her four novels (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, and Emma) were published anonymously - it simply stated written by 'A Lady.' Northanger Abbey and Persuasion were both published posthumously in 1817 by her siblings, Cassandra and Henry .

FASHION & STYLE The Regency aesthetic is associated with the empire and babydoll silhouette. That being long dresses with a fitted bodice (with low, square necklines), high waistlines (with light and free-flowing fabric), and cap sleeves (preferably short and puffy, or long and slim). Adorned with pearl and feather accessories, opera gloves, and elaborate headgear. Women always wore a chemise both day and night.

INTERIORS & COLOURS Regency style furniture included dark, heavy wood like mahogany, extensive brass inlays, gilded metal accents, pawshaped feet on table and chair legs, and carved rosettes (stylised flower designs) and laurel wreaths. Colour palettes included the light peach-blossom, pea green, yellow-pink, celestial blue, and the classic blue verditer.

write it in a missive A prolific letter writer, it is believed that Jane Austen wrote up to 3,000 letters in her lifetime. She corresponded with her friends, family and siblings mainly her beloved sister Cassandra, with whom she was very close.

Today it’s understood only 160 of these letters survived, and they provide a unique insight into her daily life and personality. History says Cassandra burned almost all of Jane's ‘gossipy’ letters after her death in 1817 to protect Jane's reputation and legacy!

BODY OF LETTER Start with a clear purpose statement, quickly grabbing the recipient's attention. Then present your information logically, using concise paragraphs and clear language. Then summarise the key points and express your desired action, if applicable.

Becoming Jane: a literary icon As a family the Austens were highly literate and creative, delighting in games, acting and writing. It's understood that growing up in this atmosphere is what encouraged a young Jane Austen to begin writing. She wrote a series of stories, sketches and fragments to entertain her family and friends between the ages of 11 and 17.

Jane's formal education was scanty. She attended the Abbey House School in Reading from 1785-6, where she was taught writing, spelling, French, history, geography, needlework, drawing, music and dancing. After this, her education was undertaken privately at home, but she was given unrestricted access to her father’s extensive library; its books instilled Jane’s lifelong love of reading.

When Jane was 25, her father retired and moved with his wife and two daughters to Bath. This was a dramatic change for Jane after spending the majority of her life in rural Hampshire. Once a stylish spa town, by the time Jane moved there in 1801, it was past its fashionable best. However, she still attended balls and concerts, and visited the Pump Room and the Theatre Royal.

For five years Jane Austen called the city of Bath her home and grew so fond of the ancient city that it found its way into two of her published works. 'Persuasion' and 'Northanger Abbey' are both partly set in Bath, and the passion she had for the city is reflected in these novels.

THE SPA CITY OF BATH Bath is a city in Somerset, England, known for and named after its Roman-built baths.

Bath is in the valley of the River Avon.

The city of Bath was founded in the 1st century AD by the Romans and gets its name from the Roman baths they built, using the natural hot springs as a thermal spa. The original name of the city was "Aquae Sulis," which means ‘The waters of Sulis’ in Latin.

In the 17th century, claims were made for the curative properties of water from the springs, and Bath became popular as a spa town in the Georgian era.

Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century and became a religious centre, and was rebuilt in the 12th and 16th centuries. Georgian architecture, crafted from Bath stone, includes the Royal Crescent, Circus, Pump Room, and the Assembly Rooms, where Beau Nash presided over the city's social life from 1704 until his death in 1762.

Jane, her mother, and sister took lodgings at 25 Gay Street in 1805 after her father died. This townhouse is now a dental surgery and a few doors down from the Jane Austen Centre.

NOTABLE STREETS Jane moved house a few times while in Bath, each becoming progressively cheaper and less desirable than the last, as their circumstances changed.

The Paragon: Jane first stayed at No. 1 with her aunt and uncle, the Leigh-Perrots.

Queen Square: In 1799 she stayed at No 13 with her mother and brother Edward, whilst they looked for a family residence.

Sydney Place: No.4 was home from 1801 -1805.

Green Park Buildings East: Jane lived at No.3, where her father died in January 1805.

Gay Street: After her father's death, the family moved to 25 Gay Street for a short time.

Trim Street: This was their 4th address in Bath; the house is no longer there today.

SOCIETY PAPERS ‘Promenading’ was a very fashionable thing to do during the Regency era, as it was a good way to be seen by other members of high society.

be more Jane PLACES TO PROMENADE THE ROYAL CRESCENT A row of 30 terraced townhouses laid out in a sweeping crescent, built between 1767 and 1774. This is where Jane would often walk on Sundays after church.

NO.1 ROYAL CRESCENT An immersive museum which allows you to see life as it was lived in Georgian Bath during the late 1700s.

THE CIRCUS

A historic ring of large townhouses forming a circle with three entrances.

The Circus is divided into three segments of equal length, with a lawn in the centre.

GRAVEL WALK Promenade down Gravel Walk (the Lover's Lane of Austen's day) and take the wide gravel-covered walkway that links the Royal Crescent and the Circus with Queen Square. It was used as a filming location for the Netflix adaptation of Persuasion (2022).

SYDNEY GARDENS Austen was fond of this popular Georgian park and open space. Stroll over Pulteney Bridge and down to the end of Great Pulteney Street. Anne Elliott and her friends from Persuasion would stroll through these gardens.

places to visit THE HOLBURNE MUSEUM (LEFT) The Grade I listed building’s grand façade and gardens provide an inkling of its grandeur and history.

Originally designed and constructed as a hotel, it is now home to a collection of fine and decorative art, including Renaissance treasures to masterpieces by Gainsborough. In Jane’s era it was a restaurant and prominent meeting place.

During the Regency era, tea drinking was very popular and Jane would have taken tea in the Assembly Rooms. A young Austen also wrote of enjoying a Bath bun (a semi-sweet bread), and nowhere is more known for these than Sally Lunn's.

One of the oldest houses in Bath (c.1482), the top floor is also known as the Jane Austen room.

Take your seat under the chandelier and, whilst listening to music by the Pump Room Trio, you can sample the spa water and enjoy a traditional brunch or afternoon tea.

THE BATH DISTILLERY GIN BAR With over 200 gins, they serve ‘Gin Austen’ inspired by the author’s novels.

Cocktails includes the ‘Lizzie B’, ‘The Darcy’ and ‘Wickham Mule”.

Opened in 1771, fashionable and ‘polite’ Georgian society (and Jane herself) would flock to this hub for many an evening ball, where young ladies would hope to meet an eligible man. They are mentioned in two of Jane Austen’s novels, including Persuasion. The Assembly Rooms were once home to the Bath Fashion Museum, which is now at the Old Post Office.

ALEXANDRA PARK Alexandra Park, or Beechen Cliff as it was known, opened in 1902 and is mentioned in Northanger Abbey.

Austen described this as one of her favourite viewpoints in letters to her family, and it’s easy to see why - its sweeping panoramas of the city skyline are worth the 15 minute climb (hike!).

grand pump room STEP BACK IN TIME

The historic Georgian building Grand Pump Room, or more informally The Pump Room, has been at the social heart of Bath for more than two centuries. It was built from 1789 to 1799, and is located next to the main street entrance to the historic Roman Baths, where visitors were able to drink Bath's legendary healing waters from a marble vase for medicinal purposes. It became a Grade I listed building in 1950 and boasts amongst its previous patrons Jane Austen and Charles Dickens.

The Pump Room was a meeting place for new arrivals and fashionable people to be seen. Many of Jane’s characters came to Bath to take the waters. It was used as a setting in her novels Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. "Every creature in Bath [...] was to be seen in the room at different periods of the fashionable hours".

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR PLASTIC FURNITURE >>

Wooden Wonder Michelle from Pennsylvania, USA shares with Mam’selle how she upcycled a standard plastic patio set from Dollar Tree (a discount store in America), into a classy outdoor teak garden set that looks a million dollars!

you will need

Mam’selle thinks this technique would also work on the classic Sindy garden furniture sets.

1. Give the furniture a light sanding , wipe over and paint, then paint colour of your choice,. I used matte black house paint because I found that the spray paint chipped off.

2. For the table top: Trace the table top onto a piece of thick card, cut it out and then glue on the craft or lollypop sticks using Modpodge or similar glue. Trim to fit card.

3. Once the sticks were dry, I used a coffee stain to cover the craft/lollypop sticks. I used a ratio of 3 teaspoons of coffee to 1 teaspoon of boiling hot water.

4. Allow to dry and add an additional stain, dependant on the finish you want.

5. For the chairs: I cut the craft/lollypop sticks to fit each slat on the chair seat, back and arms rests. I stained them first and allowed them to dry before glueing each slat.
