So much changes in such a short time!?

One day a paddock grazing dairy cows - next a major residential development block for approximately 63 houses.

As Maleny residents would know from the continuous “thumping” of the rock breakers it would be well known that the last couple of months have seen the development of The Enclave Estate on what was previously Hopper’s Dairy Farm off Tallowood Street, Maleny.

This development is just one of a number that have been approved and are due to commence in the very near future.

Will these new developments ruin Maleny’s unique quaint slice of paradise and village friendly spirit that residents presently enjoy. Please

businesses suffer because of Telstra!

One doesn’t have to travel too far from Australia’s capitol cities to find Telstra phone blackspot or poorly working Telstra infrastructure.

For some time now Maleny businesses have been suffering because of poor service from Telstra. Not only have phones been not working, or working very poorly, of more concern has been the non-operation of EFTPOS services.

Maleny for a number of years has suffered from poor Telstra service. The 2023 Maleny Wood Expo in May and the Maleny Show on June 2nd and 3rd saw the phone network fail. Maleny businesses and stallholders lost tens of thousands of dollars during those events.

Federal Member for Fisher, Mr Andrew Wallace MP , who attended the Maleny Show said that he had had a lot of concerned residents come to him complaining about the poor Telstra service and delays plaguing the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

Mr Wallace said that a project is underway to expand the 4G and 5G at the Maleny base station… these upgrades will commence on June 13th and may take up to two weeks to complete. He continued, “New coverage is also coming in the next few months for Beerwah and Booloumba under the Mobile Black Spot Program.”

More than 6,000 locations around Australia have been nominated by members of the public, local councils, community representatives and businesses as having appalling mobile phone reception. Of those locations Queensland has at least 2984 black-spot complaints. Most of those blackspot have been known to Telstra for over a decade with little to no rectification in sight.

Around 1940 home furniture had a distinct style that was popular at the time. This telephone was one of the modern items being slowly introduced into the lounge room.

Since 2018, the Federal Government’s Mobile Black Spot Program has invested $174m towards 250 base stations across Queensland. In the 2022 - 2023 Federal Government “Better Connectivity Plan” $656 million was provided to telecoms with a further $488 million provided to NBN Co to improve mobile and broadband connectivity and resilience in rural and regional Australia. This is part of $2.2 billion dollars to be spent over 5 years.

In spite of all these promises phone reception, both mobile, fixed line and broadband continues to hamper regional and rural communities and their businesses. Whilst no-one should be held back or left behind by lack of access to high-speed broadband that is not the case in not so remote Queensland.

Maleny Skate Park Upgrade

The Maleny skate park halfpipe will be replaced

with a brand new eight-metre-wide half pipe that will be constructed and completed just in time for the summer school holidays. Due to age and safety concerns, the extremely popular existing metal half pipe, adjacent to the main concrete skate park within the Maleny Showgrounds, will be demolished this month.

The new eight-metre-wide half pipe will feature four-to-five-foot transitions and a high performance Skatelite wear surface.

Tenders for this project have now closed, and work is expected to commence in the coming months.

We have worked closely with the Maleny community on this project. These free recreational facilities for youth, families and the young-at-heart are so important to support physical and mental health. The main concrete skate park within the showgrounds remains open for action.

Rural Property Grants

Grants for rural property owners - open now! Rural landowners within Division 5 can apply for financial help to complete on-ground environment projects on their private property, with Sunshine Coast Council’s Landholder Environment Grants now open.

Grants of up to $15,000 are available for projects like bush regeneration; reducing sediment loss on farms; control of environmental weeds; modifying non-boundary fencing to make it wildlife friendly; revegetation of degraded areas; and to establish vegetation corridors and buffer zones.

Please read the Landholder Environment Grant Guidelines at:

https://www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/grants to submit your expression of interest before 14 August 2023.

The Maleny Cultural & Historical Society, The Maleny and District Men’s Shed, Knitfest and the Maleny Music and Performing Arts Incorporated have all received grants in the latest Sunshine Coast major grants round.

Following representations I made to Telstra last month regarding mobile reception in Maleny, I have been provided with information about upcoming upgrades in your area.

A project is underway to expand the 4G and 5G at the Maleny base station. These upgrades will commence 13 June 23 and may take up to two weeks to complete. Electricity Prices continue to rise

Regional Queenslanders are set to cop the highest power price increase in the country, with average bills expected to rocket up 28 per cent.

On average South East Queensland residents are facing an increase of approximately 21.5 per cent or on average about $349 dollars a year more.

The Queensland Government is continuing to subsidise regional electricity prices, which is expected to cost about $635.2 million in 2022–23.

Increased prices are being blamed on higher gas and coal prices faced by thermal generators, mostly due to the war in Ukraine.

BEWARE - Another Scam

Another scam has come to the notice of the National Australia Bank whereby criminals are tricking users into downloading an app from a web site that looks like an NAB website thus causing people to lose control of their phones, computers and tablets.

A NAB spokesperson said that the bank was aware of a number of fake websites connected to the bank which have been created by cyber criminals.

NAB will never ask customers to download programs directly from our site. Anyone compromised should contact NAB by phone on 13 22 65.

Dr Jon Outridge left his Doctors Surgery in Maleny yo join the RFDS as a Flying Doctor.

The largest loss of life in a rail accident on the Queensland railway network with 16 fatalities occurred at approximately 9:48 am on 5 May 1947 on the Brisbane to Dayborough Rail line approximately 15 km (9.3 mi) northwest of Brisbane. This train disaster is still the most deadly in Queensland Rails history. The accident occurred when a crowded picnic train derailed on a sharp left-hand curve between Ferny Grove and Camp Mountain stations. Sixteen people including both the driver and fireman of the train were killed and a further 38 were injured.

On that fateful day special train, service number E91, consisting of a 4-8-0 C17-class steam locomotive, No. 824, and six wooden suburban passenger carriages, Evans Cars numbered 740, 739, 742, 741, 743 and 744 left Roma Street railway station at 8.50a.m.

This was just one of a number of specially chartered trains to travel on that line on the day, conveying groups to numerous picnic locations in the scenic country area north-west of Brisbane This particular train was chartered by the social and recreation club for employees of the Department of Trade and Customs, who were travelling to a picnic venue at Closeburn to celebrate the Labour Day public holiday. This was really a big event in those times compared to today and because not many families

had their own cars and it was not uncommon for large groups to hire a train to certain locations.

The speed limit on the Dayboro line at the time was km/h on straight sections of track, and 32 km/h through curve. Travelling down the grade the train suddenly quickly picked up

Carriages started to rock severely causing luggage to fall from overhead racks and women and children began to scream.

Then the locomotive left the rails on a left-hand curve. The locomotive tipped onto its right side and ploughed into an embankment, the coal tender upended, and water tank set free. The first carriage struck the water tank squarely, with the three leading passenger carriages telescoped into the wreckage. All of the front carriage and the two

leading compartments of the second were Injune.

At the subsequent inquest it was found the train's driver had been rostered on a line he had never driven before. The train was exceeding the speed limit by 24 kilometres per hour as it came around the bend at Camp Mountain.

The inquest also found that the fireman who was supposed to be supervising the new driver wasn't paying close enough attention, the brakes weren't sufficiently applied as they went down. The train just got too fast and out of control and jumped the lines. The inquiry headed by Judge, Sir Alan Mansfield shared blame directed to both the fireman and guard.

Much of this information is available from handtyped transcripts of witness statements from the

Steam locomotive, No. 824 E91, a 4-8-0 C17class steam locomotive now on permanent display at Injure SW Qld The above memorial is situated at McLean Road South, Camp Mountain, 4520 and marks the site of the Camp Mountain Rail Crash.

An Old Codger’s Thoughts & Opinions

When we were younger and the society moved at a lot slower pace we all knew what our gender was by the type of tackle that we had below the belt.

Today things have changed markedly. Australia has even legalised same sex marriage - and there is nothing wrong with that. After all as an individual you cannot always control who you “fall in love with”.

It might be considered normal for a child of 3 or 4 years of age to alternate between identifying themselves as “boy” or “girl and that continues to change on a regular basis, however it could be up to the age of 16 to 18 for a child to sufficient mental capacity to give informed consent to start making a move towards changing gender. This should only be considered with open consultation with parents and family medical advisors.

Today more kids are questioning their gender due to it being popular socially, or even more so in the news and social media.

It has been reported that Queensland Education school guidance officers are advising students as young as 12 on how to go about changing their names, pronouns, and gender – without including parents. It was also reported that in one known case it is claimed that a guidance officer encouraged a child to lie to their parents and the school would support a potential case for the child to cut ties with their parents.

One mother even claimed that her daughter was groomed into believing that her home was not safe if her parents did not affirm her new identity. Who makes these decisions?

She continued to say that the school was going to put a new gender identity in place without telling the family initially, just a flick of the switch. There was no communication and no support plan.

Guidance officers can use their professional judgment to determine if a student has sufficient maturity and understanding to be considered a mature minor and therefore consent to beginning changing gender services without parental permission.

Transgender kids, especially children and adolescents, have a much higher risk for and rate of self-harm and of suicidal thoughts or suicidal attempts, and of depression and anxiety, mostly caused by the often incorrect thought of being unaccepted.

Do we know just how widespread this practice is in our schools?

Is it morally and criminally a correct and are Queensland teachers are deceiving students parents?

It is important that we know about the Department of Education position around the expectation placed on teachers caught between the student’s wishes and a parent’s right to know about major information about the subject student.

“Yes, Patrick, sure is true,” responded the lawyer.

“And now someone is suin’ dem fast food restaurants for makin’ dem fat an’ cloggin’ their arteries with all dem der burgers an’ fries, is that true?”

“Sure is, Patrick.”

“And that a lady sued McDonald’s for millions when she burned her tongue with that hot coffee that she ordered?”

“That’s right,” said the lawyer.” But why are you asking?”

Selling or buying a property!

What is a Guarantee?

With Trove Easton of Easton Lawyers, Maleny

In commercial or personal matters, if the lender thinks a borrower might not be able to repay a loan, they may ask the lender to provide a guarantee to increase the likelihood of the loan being repaid.

There are two types of guarantees

✦ a first-party guarantee where the loan is guaranteed by security in the form of an asset; or

✦ a third-party guarantee where someone else guarantees the loan. You should always obtain legal advice before entering into a guarantee as lender, borrower, or guarantor.

For the guarantor it is essential to understand, that should the borrower fail to repay the loan for any reason, it is the guarantor that must repay the loan in full. So guarantors should give the same

care and consideration, as if taking out a loan personally.

On-grid and off-grid energy storage systems

Battery choice should take into consideration safety, overall cost of ownership and environmental safety. Common types of batteries used to store solar energy include lithium-ion, flow, lead acid, and nickel cadmium.

Lithium-ion batteries have a long lifecycle, are low maintenance and popular for residential battery energy storage systems. Flow batteries are an emerging battery technology using a water-based solution of zinc bromide. They operate well in hot climates (but not cold) and are more suited to large-scale systems. They’re relatively expensive to buy and maintain but are easy to recycle.

Lead acid batteries have been around a long time so are cheap, reliable and have established systems for disposal and recycling. However, they have a shorter lifespan and are higher maintenance. They’re more temperature-sensitive and have a slower charge cycle.

Nickel cadmium batteries are more expensive compared with lead acid batteries and contain highly toxic chemical

components. They are difficult to maintain but have a long service life.

LFP and NMC lithium-ion batteries: what’s the difference?

Lithium-ion batteries are commonly used for residential or business battery energy storage systems, however it’s important to know that not all lithium-ion batteries are alike in chemistry. Two major types on the market are lithium ferro phosphate (LFP) and nickel manganese cobalt (NMC).

NMC batteries are a newer technology and can be charged at a higher, faster rat; however, this does generate more heat. The chemistry of this battery and its lower flashpoint means there is a higher risk of catching fire due to thermal runaway (an uncontrollable increase in temperature). Nickel and cobalt are rare and expensive, and mining and disposal of these elements is environmentally problematic.

LFP batteries use lithium iron phosphate chemistry and are the safest option. They are more stable chemically and thermally, so they are at a very low risk of catching fire. The use of iron, which is a more plentiful element, means LFP batteries are both are cheaper and less toxic than their counterparts.

LFP batteries have both a lower energy density and lower operating voltage NMC batteries. However, they have an excellent life cycle – approximately four times that of NMC batteries – and are suitable for a wide variety of climates.

Travelling Jackaroo “Getting to the Top”

“Back on the road” ….. continuing on with my mission!

More donations for the R.F.D.S

We are back into the Queensland Show Circuit and once again I am travelling as part of the Show Circuit collecting donations from the small country towns. They’re always friendly.

Back in my happy place in Slims Cab, in the last 3hrs I’ve had

Bit of a long shot here but do any of you guys know anyone high up in the NHVR or QLD transport I could speak to?

I’ve got an idea that needs to be approved and have been trying to go about it the traditional way but haven’t had much luck through phone calls, hoping that through the power of social media someone knows someone who can sign off on what I’d like to do after this trip which I’m hoping will raise a lot more money for my charities.

Saw this in Clermont. It is the level of Boganism that many aspire too, jet ski and project car in the front yard with a wheel-less commodore out front being used to hold the basketball hoop down

Moffitt & Son Garage, Maleny.

Maleny District locals would well remember “Moffies Garage” at the top of Maple Street. Maleny. The garage was operated by George Moffitt. George was born in Conondale and subsequently completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic, Apart from being a motor repair service the business operated a towing and crane business.

Today the building still exists and is a coffee shop. Just another distant memory of Maleny and Maleny’s residents.
